"An acid bake-leach process has been identified and applied to an enargite concentrate containing ~67% enargite, ~27% pyrite (FeS2), ~3% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), ~6% sphalerite (ZnS) and <1% galena (PbS). Sulfuric acid baking of this concentrate resulted in the transformation of the concentrate to S8, As2O3, HFe(SO4)2•4H2O, PbSO4 and Cu0.47Fe0.53SO4•H2O, all of which (except elemental sulfur and PbSO4) dissolved during the water leaching step. More than 87% Cu and 64% As were leached when the concentrate was baked at 200°C over 7 hours with a sulfuric acid-toconcentrate weight ratio of 1.6. Less than 1% As was lost to the gas phase. Upon water leaching, copper and arsenic were released to the solution at a concentration ratio of about 3:1. While enargite is very reactive during the sulfuric acid baking reaction, other minerals present in the concentrate such as pyrite, galena and sphalerite may compete to consume sulfuric acid and be converted into their corresponding sulfates at different concentrations. The purpose of this paper is to present our examination of the effects of sulfuric acid dosage on the extractions of Cu, Fe, and As from an enargite concentrate. In this regard, the concentrate, baked concentrate, and the leach residues are characterized and a conceptual process flowsheet is described for the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of enargite concentrates.IntroductionThe occurrence of enargite (Cu3AsS4) in copper ores and concentrates and the associated high arsenic values in such resources have resulted in a considerable decrease in the demand for such concentrates because they cannot be economically processed using conventional technologies such as smelting and atmospheric leaching (Mihajlovic et al., 2011). The exploitation of such problematic deposits through competitive treatment strategies will be required in the near future in order to satisfy increasing pressure from the copper market. It is expected that the average arsenic grade of copper concentrates will increase from 0.17% in 2008 to 0.22% by 2020 (Mayhew et al., 2011).The acid bake-leach process was identified and selected for further investigation at the University of Utah as a possible process alternative for the treatment of enargite concentrates. In this case, adequate amounts of concentrated sulfuric acid are mixed with the concentrate and heated to the temperature range 150-300°C. Subsequently, the baked material is leached with water/weak acid and the acid bake-leach process has some advantages over conventional sulfuric acid leaching (Prater et al., 1970). During water leaching, metal sulfates are released in solution, after which they can be extracted through well-known hydrometallurgical techniques. While the majority of the work has been done on oxide minerals, there is a limited record of sulfuric acid baking of sulfides."

During 1960, the controversy over percentage depletion reached the level of debate between presidential candidates. Nixon took the position that he would not tamper with the status quo in this matter. Kennedy took the position that he was willing to take a fresh look at the issues involved. Kennedy&apos;s position appears to have been based upon two premises: (1) new sources of federal revenue may be needed; and (2) current depletion rates, even if sound in principle, may be too high and, therefore, inequitable. The latter premise constitutes the basis for the claims that depletion allowances are simply "loopholes" of tax avoidance. Very probably the controversy over percentage depletion will remain in the political limelight during most of the coming decade. It is quite possible that the current depletion rates, at least those for oil and gas, will be reduced during this period. The aim of this paper is to isolate the complex causes of this mounting opposition to percentage depletion.

"A carefully planned laboratory test program is the foundation for the successful development of a sulfide flotation process. In this paper, the development of a copper-molybdenum flotation process is described. However, the concepts discussed can be applied to most sulfide flotation systems and to many industrial minerals projects as well. Each step is examined, beginning with sample procurement and covering sample preparation, flotation test preparation grinding, scoping flotation tests for reagent scheme selection, rougher flotation parameter evaluation and cleaner circuit evaluation, through to locked-cycle testing and pilot plant design and operation. Ore variability and modeling to determine the response of various ore types to the optimum conditions established is also examined.IntroductionA carefully planned laboratory test program is essential for the successful development of any sulfide flotation process. These programs usually begin with a series of batch tests on several ore type composites to evaluate appropriate reagent schemes and delineate optimum rougher flotation conditions, such as primary grind size, flotation pulp density, flotation pulp pH and retention time. Cleaner parameters such as regrind size requirements, cleaner pH, pulp density and number of stages are then defined. Semicontinuous locked-cycle tests are performed using the parameters established in the batch tests to determine the effect of middling streams recirculation on flotation performance. The data generated and the experience gained in the locked-cycle tests may be used to design and operate a continuous pilot plant if relatively large amounts of concentrate are required for further process development, such as optimization of byproduct molybdenum production from bulk copper-molybdenum concentrate.A comprehensive ore variability program is undertaken to determine the response of various ore types to the optimum conditions established. These ore variability programs often test hundreds of samples in standardized batch rougher and cleaner tests to ensure that the orebody is well understood.This article describes the development of a copper-molybdenum flotation process, but the concepts discussed can be applied to most sulfide flotation systems and many industrial minerals projects. This paper will discuss the operation and maintenance of Molycorp&apos;s Quests Mine ore conveyor system. The 1.2 m wide, steel cable-reinforced conveyor belts are capable of transporting 1089 kt/h of ore over a belt line distance of 3124 m with a vertical rise of 518 m. A portion of the conveyor runs in a 2057 m long underground decline on a 10° slope. Six 448 kW motors power the main 1.2 m wide belts.

Geometallurgical assessment of orebodies in the mining industry typically relies on bench-scale or lab-based characterization techniques. In this study, we investigate drone- and tripod-based field hyperspectral imaging as a potential addition to the geometallurgy toolkit in multiple applications. This pilot study tests hyperspectral imaging for largescale mineral mapping in and around the active Lisbon Valley copper mine, including natural exposures, previously producing U-V mines, highwalls, dumps, and leaching sites. Tests include different (supervised and unsupervised) mineral data classification methods, varying mineral spectral reference libraries, comparison with ground-truth geological and spectroscopic mapping and sampling, and integration with LiDAR data. The results show that hyperspectral scans can produce spatially registered maps of the distribution of different spectrally active mineral types over dumps, highwalls, leach pads, and natural outcrops. Clays, other phyllosilicates, carbonates, and sulfates showed up particularly well. The sensor was also able to distinguish dry from lixiviant-saturated areas and map different clay types on the leach pads, and shows promise for differentiating types and health of vegetation. These results suggest that hyperspectral imaging, if coupled with robust ground-truthing, can be a useful complement to existing geometallurgical techniques in the mining industry, such as geological mapping, blast hole sampling and automated mineralogy identifications, and handheld spectrometry. In particular, hyperspectral imaging has promise for mapping the distribution of acid-consuming minerals; mapping the distribution of swelling, sliming, and heap-blinding clays; and pinpointing problem areas on heap leach pad surfaces.

Surface coal mining productivity in the U.S. and Illinois has shown a general declining trend since 1969. The U.S. Department of Energy conducted an analysis in 1980 of the causes of declining productivity in different states. This paper presents a detailed analysis of changes in overall productivity and productivity in different functions such as overburden preparation, overburden stripping, reclamation, coal handling, etc. during the period 1970-1982. Statistical analysys techniques including multiple regression were utilized in the study.

A workflow model is presented to assist in implementing a strategic information system in metallurgical plants.

Scale physical models, constructed according to the principle of similarity theory, have been widely used to simulate the mining disturbances to surrounding strata and to evaluate the effectiveness of implemented ground control techniques. This technique has also been used for studying mining-induced surface and subsurface subsidence. The movements of the observation points installed on the physical model at different mining stages are currently measured using total station which is time-consuming and inaccurate especially on small scale models. A photogrammetry-based measurement system has been developed. During a physical modeling process, photos of the model can be taken during the simulation process reducing survey time from hours to a few seconds. A program, Photogrammetry Analysis for Physical Modeling of Mine Subsidence Process (PAPMMSP), developed based on photogrammetric principle is used to quickly identify the installed observation points and accurately determine their coordinates. The measurement accuracy is well under submillimeter level—an ultra-important advantage as any measurement errors in coordinates are magnified by the model dimension scale (commonly 20 to 400). A physical modeling case of subsurface strata movements and deformations associated with longwall mining operations is presented in the paper to demonstrate the functions and capabilities of the developed photogrammetry program.

As part of the British Steel Corporation?s development plan during the 1970?s, it was decided to concentrate its bulk steelmaking processes based on the BOS at 4 major Works with access to deepwater ore terminals, for the supply of high-grade imported ores. These 4 sites were at: - 1. Rarenscraig Works in Scotland where the ore terminal would be hilt at Hunterston on the west coast some 50 miles away. Bavenscraig was already an integrated Works but suffered from having to discharge ore 27 Glasgow tenxinus on the River Clyde, which could only accommodate vessels up to 25,000 tonnes. In the future, ore was to be unloaded at Runterston and shipped by a rail-link into Ravenscraig, The new ore terminal would have the potential to unload vessels up to 300,000 tonnes. - 2. Port Talbot Works in south Vales where the existing harbour was developed to discharge large ore carriers. This again was an existing Integrated Works and the benefits of the new harbour also applied to Llanwern Works which was another integrated Works some 50 dies to the east, which would now receive ore from Port Talbot.

The pneumatic conveying of relatively large abrasive materials by dilute-phase conveying techniques has been applied in the underground mining industry for many years especially for backfilling mines and the hoisting of ore, coal, or rock out of the mines. The technique was extensively used in Europe, especially Germany and Britain for backfilling coal mines with rejects from the coal cleaning plants which not only helped to reduce environmental problems on the surface, but offered support to the overlaying strata in the deep underground mines, Similar techniques are being employed in the U.S.A. especially in uranium mines for the disposal of tailings, the main purpose being to extract a larger percentage of the ore from the pillars especially under weak roof conditions. Other than for the backfilling of abandoned mine entries, pneumatic conveying has not been applied in the mining industry in surface applications. In this paper, some consideration is given to three applications for open pit mining which may prove beneficial, namely hoisting coal up the high wall, sealing off auger holes, and stabilizing the high wall when being undercut by a longwall system.

In recent years, federal and state regulatory agencies have tightened air emission standards. Two of the acid gases, hydrochloric acid (HCI) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), are under heavy scrutiny for reduction. . Most traditional scrubbing systems, i.e. wet scrubbers and spray dryers, meet the standards but they typically are high in capital cost, have significant space requirements for equipment, and are difficult to maintain. Dry sodium injection (DSI) is a alternative technology that has been shown to be effective in HCl and SO2 removal while being the inverse to the problems listed with traditional systems. This paper covers the mechanics of dry injection scrubbing using the most effective sorbents, sodium bicarbonate and mechanically-refined trona (natural sodium sesquicarbonate). It presents DSI performance data for Chambers Medical located in Hampton, SC. This facility incinerates local medical and municipal solid waste. Chambers Medical has used mechanically-fined trona for HCl and SO2 removal since late 1991.

Since the beginnings of, the human struggle for survival and improvement, mining has been one of the basic endeavors of life. Until relatively recent times it was classed as an art. Now we are at work trying to, raise mining to the level of an engineering science where it belongs if we are to prosper. It should be self-evident that this goal can be attained only through industrial progress: based on education and research. It is true that our industry, left to itself, will develop a few new ideas and techniques through the years. However, we mining&apos; engineers are relatively few in number compared to the other disciplines, and the rate of our improvement by such "accidental" discoveries is simply tooslow to keep pace with the rest of our technical civilization. It will be evident in the remarks that follow, that the rapid development of mining education, research, and the industry are extremely interdependent, and will be largely controlled by the amount of cooperation, support, and cross-fertilization that can be developed among all three.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk, either at the commissioning of a concentrator or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-confidence flotation testing (HCFT) was developed for this purpose and is part of the list of technologies at various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of research on this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to the HCFT method and complementary connections between sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. Where raw coal from a mine is treated in dense medium separators ash in the washed product is generally very consistent, provided control of the medium suspension is maintained at a given specific gravity. When, however, the washing process is a Baum jig or other similar apparatus, making a separation at rather arbitrary gravities, the control of the product ash is less accurate, particularly in those cases where the design capacity of the washbox is exceeded by the load of high ash fines. In either of these cases an instantaneous measurement of ash while not essential would be desirable, to check the quality of the washed product and provide operator or management with instantaneous warning of changes in ash. Nearly 60% of all British coal mined goes for electricity generation, to burn at 17% ash, and since the overall average ash content of raw coal as mined is about 30% and varies within a range of 18 ? 40%, incombustible material has to be removed. The ash specification could be met either by total washing, or by washing part and blending the clean coal produced with the remaining untreated coal. Some plants use a straight tonnage split, but generally speaking in Britain it has been found more economical to screen and wash the oversize only. In either case for effective quality control in blending an instantaneous determination of the ash content of the product as it is made has been found essential, since standard ash determination by pyrolysis methods is lengthy and provides information too late to be used in the control of plants blending at the rate of 1000 ton/h.

The retained roadway subjected to dynamic loading from thick and hard roof (THF) fracturing caused severe deformations in the thick coal seam (TCS). Understanding the dynamic loading mechanism of gob-side entry retaining (GER) in TCS with THF is the first step in determining the stability of the retained roadway. Characteristics of dynamic loading mechanism of gob-side entry retaining (GER) in TCS with THF are investigated through numerical simulation and field test of 150208 haulage gate in Sucun coal mine. To improve the reliability of numerical simulation, the double-yield model is used to simulate gob and the strain-softening model is used to simulate filling body; the dynamic module in FLAC3D is used to simulate the dynamic loading due to the THF fracture, and the global model are validated. Characteristics of surrounding rock convergence, plastic zone distribution, and vertical stress in the filling body after the THF fracture are reveled with respect to width to height ratio (W/H) of the filling body and the dynamic loading strength of the THF. The rational width to height ration of the filling body constructed with high-water materials is 0.57. Field monitoring results show that the GER with THF in Sucun coal mine could adapt the dynamic loading due to the THF fracture and meet the requirement. This study is helpful to better study the stability of GER according to the breaking dynamic load of THF and provides reference and guidance for the analysis of breaking dynamic load of THF under similar geological conditions.

When coal in an oil/water slurry is ground to minus-200-mesh in a ball mill, some of the mill energy, normally wasted as heat, can be usefully recovered to help emulsify the oil. If the discharge flows onto a suitable sized trommel screen, water and ash material are rejected through the screen while coal and oil ball together to give a clean coal product. A small (6-lb/hr) continuous plant has demonstrated the feasibility and the limitations of this process for New Mexico coals.

The Conda Partnership&apos;s Dry Valley Phosphate mine is a thinly bedded, multiple seam, open pit mining operation where selective mining techniques are used to recover phosphatic shales. The mining methods used are truck/shovel and scraper/ dozer operations. The ore that is mined is shipped 32 km (20 miles) by rail to a beneficiation facility which upgrades the ore via washing and calcining. The mine and beneficiation complexes are owned by the Conda Partnership. The Conda Partnership is a joint venture between Beker Industries Corp. of Greenwich, Connecticut, and Western Co-Operative Fertilizers (U.S.) Inc. of Alberta, Canada. The Conda Partnership operates as a separate entity from the two partners.

Salt, a non-metallic mineral whose use dates back to earliest history of mankind, and whose uses cover the widest range for any mineral raw material, is generally of widespread occurrence in commercially recoverable quantities in the oceans, in certain sedimentary rocks, in certain lakes, and in certain underground waters. Passing over geological detail, it may be said that, generally, all of the salt in the world has, at least once in geological history, been in solution in the oceans. The total salt content of today&apos;s oceans, said to equal 4.5 million cubic miles of rock salt, dwarfs the tremendous volume of salt in the sedimentary rocks. In 1958, United States production of salt was about 22 million net tons and world production about 82 million. About 3 percent of United States production is table salt, with chemical, municipal, industrial and agricultural uses taking the remainder. Mississippi River. Figure 1 has been expanded sufficiently to show also those salt occurrences and producing points which might economically ship salt into these states. Although widespread in occurrence, salt deposits and possible production areas generally show very sharp local boundaries. Salt-for non-table use is susceptible to ?place value?, a common problem in low valued raw materials, where transportation costs often exceed the value of the material f.o.b. the production point. Generally only large capacity mechanized salt producing operations can compete in United States markets, as contrasted to the many small local salt evaporators in less industrialized Mexico.

The Office of Coal Research has been supporting the development of processes for producing synthetic pipeline gas from coal since 1964. .Some of this work has also been jointly supported by the American Gas Association. The work has progressed through laboratory investigation, to bench scale, to pilot plant. It was far from a crash program, generally being fund-limited.. As of one year ago, we had reached the following position: 1. The Institute of Gas Technology HYGAS. process pilot plant in Chicago, Illinois, was in the process of being finally completed. This plant is designed to produce about 1,500,000 cubic feet of pipeline-quality gas per day from 75 tons of coal. 2. The Consolidation Coal Company, CO2 Acceptor Process pilot plant in Rapid City, South Dakota, was well._ on its way to completion. This plant, designed primarily for lignite and subbituminous coals, has about one-half the design capacity of the HYGAS plant. Additionally, the initial construction did not provide for cleanup and methanation; only the preliminary synthesis gas is produced. 3. The Bituminous Coal Research, Inca, BI-GAS pilot plant was in a preliminary design stage. A site had been selected near Homer City, Pennsylvania, to build this plant, planned to consume 120 tons of coal per day. Meanwhile, as you are all well aware, a natural gas shortage was developing in this country. Much has been published about it, so I will not. bother you with further details. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) and the regulations promulgated for that "Act" have resulted in changes to surface mining operations in order to comply with the stringent federally enforced reclamation requirements for prime farmland. In many instances the operator has modified surface mining operations to meet the prime farmland requirements through changes to mining equipment operation, addition of new equipment targeted for reclamation or the use of totally different mining techniques. The major challenge to mine operators has been how to use existing mining equipment to meet the requirements of the "Act." Freeman United Coal Mining Company opened the first new large surface coal mine in Illinois following passage of the "Act." The Industry Mine, located near Macomb, Illinois started mining operations during March of 1982 and was required therefore, to meet all of the requirements of the "Act" including prime farmland restoration. At the Industry Mine a shovel and a cross-pit bucket wheel excavator (wheel) are used for overburden removal and the wheel is addition- ally utilized to assist in reclamation operations. The wheel mines the subsoil thereby elliminating scraper placement of that subsoil and the attendant compaction problems with scraper placed subsoil. The wheel is used to convey topsoil stock- piles from the highwall to the mined overburden in order to lessen scraper traffic and possible compaction on the graded overburden during top- soil removal and replacement. Close control of the operation of the wheel yields more uniform wheel spoil ridges which then require less grading prior to topsoil replacement.
