Lime is one of the most extensively used chemicals in industry. Other than sulfuric acid, it is used in greater quantities than any other man-made industrial chemical. In 1974 there were 20,368,000 tons of lime used in the United States, which amounts to approximately 190 pounds for each man, woman and child in our nation. Lime also is perhaps the most diversely used of any industrial chemical. It is used in such areas as pharmaceutical, chemical, steel making, glass making, production of copper and aluminum, sugar refining, agriculture, construction, ecological endeavors, potable water treatment and sanitation. Figure I lists the major uses of lime for 1974, which is the latest year for which this data is available. The impact of the use of lime for ecological reasons did not show up to any appreciable extent in 1974, but we expect this to be a significant factor within the next few years. Fortunately, in the United States and also in most of the world, there are many deposits of high quality limestone available for the production of hood quality lime. For this discussion, we will assure that a limestone of a suitable quality and size consist will be available in a storage bin or stockpile near the kiln. Quality requirements for the lime product will be covered. We also will give a brief description of the three most popular types of lime calcining systems, how they function, and expected lime product quality from each of these. Commercial fuels and major accessory equipment will be discussed briefly.

The California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) is the nation's first legislation establishing a statewide mineral resource policy governing mining activities that recognizes regional needs and retains local autonomy. The Southern California Rock Products Association supported this proposed legislation. It was through our efforts that SMARA was passed in 1975. The local planning and zoning processes, which are so critical to the mining industry, have been significantly improved with implementation of SMARA. Recognition of the importance of the mining industry is now being developed by the State Mining and Geology Board and the California Division of Mines and Geology (CDMG).

Open cast surface mining requires blast hole drilling with many interesting facets in order to achieve mine planning forecasts. Interestingly, no single method or combination of theoretical hypothesis of mining economics is right for all conditions. On occasion mine planners introduce a project with little or no regard to drilling and blasting. Generally, drilling and blasting costs are a significant percentage of total mine overhead. One such drilling and blasting method which can be utilized to reduce overall mine expenditure is inclined or angle hole drilling. One must bear in mind, that angle hole drilling per-se mill not reduce costs, unless a set of required circumstances is met. An attempt will be made to detail when conditions of the mine design criteria dictate the use of angle drilling.

The pit slope angle dictates the economics as much as the depth of the pit. Steeper slope provides more ore reserves, at the same time, the steeper slope presents higher probability of instability and associated maintenance problems. While large open pit mines mostly belonged to nonferrous metals in the past, other mines are becoming deeper as the mine economics permits deeper mine operations, Such minerals include coal, uranium, phosphate, and others. There are some basic differences between an open pit slope and slopes that are encountered in usual civil engineering work such as dam embankments and highway cuts (Figure 1). The stability of the civil engineering slope changes continuously with time due to ground-water movements, weathering, etc. But the stability of the open pit slope (Figure 2) changes more drastically day-to-day or even hour-to-hour, These changes occur because not only is the slope geometry being continuously changed by the mining operation, but also different geology and geologic structures are being exposed on the slope. Even when a particular slope area is not presently being mined, excavation in adjacent areas can affect the general condition of that slope area. A pit will experience some slope failures during its life.

Theoretically, controlling redox potential to a relatively low value and inhibiting jarosite formation on the chalcopyrite surface would be an effective strategy to accelerate the bioleaching of chalcopyrite. In this work, using limonite as seed crystals, the effects of the goethite precipitation process on the bioleaching of chalcopyrite were studied for the first time. The bioleaching results showed that the addition of limonite controlled the redox potential in an appropriate range and promoted chalcopyrite dissolution through the removal of ferric (Fe3+) ions. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope analyses indicate that limonite significantly induced the goethite precipitation process and inhibited the production of jarosite. We conclude that promoting the goethite precipitation process with limonite is an effective strategy in accelerating the bioleaching process of chalcopyrite.

Little did I know, in 1977, that when the A. P. Green Refractories Raw Material Manager showed me 5-6 burlap bags with samples of calcined high alumina bauxite in their testing lab that this was the start of China moving to be the number one user and producer of calcined refractory bauxite. According to Ted Dickson in his August 2008 Industrial Minerals article China produced about 4 million tons of calcined bauxite in 2007 using 2 million tons themselves. They imposed an export limitation of 970,000 tons in 2007 and 940,000 tons in 2008. A 10% growth will take up the difference between exports and production in 4 years. Two of these years are gone. It will take only 4 more years to eliminate the export quota in home use. Then they will be importing unless they increase production. Guyana was exporting over a half million tons in 1975 and sold less than 70,000 tons in 2002. Basai Metals Group bought Guyana?s deposits and is rose to 250,000 tons in 2007 and expects to produce 280,000 tons in 2008. PRICES According to the USGS Prices dropped from $172/per ton for Guyana calcines in 1980 just after the start of Chinese production to $122 in 1985. Guyana prices averaged around $120/ton from 1985 to 2005. China?s price dropped as low as $45/ton in 1995 undercutting Guyana and making it virtually impossible for anyone to get into the market. The price suddenly escalated to $550/ton FOB China in the summer of 2008 when China actually cut its exports in half. The price dropped in the fall as orders dropped. This is a four to five fold price increase. Is this a shortage of bauxite or a monopoly? Australia dropped out of the market in 2008 and Surinam, controlled by Alcoa, is not participating right now. Will these two come back in to make up the difference? Will the price hold up so they can make a profit? [ ] The low prices have undoubtedly affected the prices of the 60 and 79% alumina bauxite which can hold down the quantity of 80% plus calcined refractory needed in the world market. China is starting to upgrade lower quality bauxite up to 90% alumina. With high prices kaolin alteration to high alumina comes into play. The calcined bauxite is also used for proponents, Brown fused alumina, and abrasive grades which compete with Refractories. These and the tightness of supplies needed for metallurgical will hold prices up. TONNAGE China is the number one supplier and consumer of high alumina calcined bauxite in the world. Basai Metals Group Guyana (BMGG) is owned and controlled by Basai Minerals Group of China. This appears to be the second largest supplier. Australia has dropped production and Brazil is just starting to expand. It appears China is going to replace some of exports caused by the Export License 940,000 ton maximum in 2008 by raising Guyana?s (BMGG) production of calcined refractory grade bauxite. Companies exceeded restriction in 2007. Fines have been imposed for 2008. In August 2008 they appear on line to meet the 2008 quota. After August prices have dropped off as orders dropped due to the recession. Guyana was the largest producer in 1975 with 769,000 tons which decreased to less than 79,000 tons in 2002. The U. S. is a small part of the world production. I have used the United States charts to represent world imports because I have little data on what other countries import and pay FOB for their bauxite. China started exporting calcined 80% plus refractory bauxite to the United States in 1979 with 24,000 tons. By 1985 they were the number one importer with 169,000 tons. Guyana who had been number one in shipments to the United States gradually decreased to 36,000 tons in 2006. Guyana has been purchased by China BMGG and will increase there production to over 200,000 tons in 2009. Australia shut down production in 2008 and Surinam has elected to not send any Calcined bauxite to the United States. Slurry walls, also known as diaphragm walls, are commonly used as temporary and/ or permanent support of excavation for construction of shafts in soft ground. Through case history, this paper demonstrates economical benefits of disregarding long-term structural contribution of the slurry walls particularly in severe environmental condition. In addition, for temporary slurry wall shaft systems, possibility of using steel fiber, synthetic fiber or additives in lieu of temperature/shrinkage reinforcement is discussed with detailed analysis. Finally, the paper will be concluded by introducing unreinforced slurry wall shaft system using newly developed/patented concrete additive.

According to the "Survey of Energy Resources 1980" (1)*, which was prepared by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Raw Materials in Hannover (FRG)for the World Energy Conference 1980 in Munich, the world coal deposits are assessed at 775 billion tce proven reserves 448 billion tce of them recoverable and 6 161 billion tce additional resources. If one ignores growth rates, the current world coal output of 2,8 billion tpy gives our recoverable reserves a static life expectancy of 175 years. With an average increase in world output of 3,2 % like between 1973 and 1980 this range would be further shortened to an alarming degree. Furthermore, the criteria used to distinguish between workable and unworkable resources give rise to the suspicion that deposit characteristics are not always taken into account to a sufficient degree. For example, little attention is paid to major ?Bonitaet" - factors such as dip and seam thickness. There have been wide-ranging scientific discussions on the lower limit for workable coal resources, but no such limits have been set at the other end of the scale. Otherwise it is well known that performance and costs are badly affected den in level and moderately inclined seams the seam thickness is more than 4 to 5 m, because special mining methods have to be used beyond this limit. These are associated with significantly higher costs than with the winning of seams of ?normal? thickness.

In June 2022, Louisville MSD completed a 6.5 km (4-mile), 6.1 m (20-foot) finisheddiameter CSO conveyance and storage tunnel system located along the Ohio River in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. During construction, the Ohio River Tunnel alignment was expanded 2.4 km (1.5 miles) into areas where natural gas was detected. Without delaying construction, the project team developed and implemented a natural gas risk mitigation strategy to safely excavate the tunnel via TBM and install concrete lining. The risk mitigation strategy included the installation of gas-vent borings, increased tunnel ventilation, retrofitting tunneling equipment for “gassy” operations, and modifying the project specific HASP.

This paper describes a case history of geochemical prospecting. An area of known mineralization was available for an orientation survey which led to the selection of elements and criteria for a reconnaissance survey in the area offsetting the known mineralization. Certain anomalies were found which were then made subject of confirmation sampling and of rock geochemical investigations. Inasmuch as the geochemical prospecting technique specifically led to a detailed area which now serves as a target for drilling and other exploration efforts, the geochemical prospecting part of the program is considered successfully concluded and, therefore, reported on here. Whether the target area will turn out to host the deposit or not is, of course, of utmost importance to the Company, but is of less importance to this paper. We will describe the concepts, the planning, the execution, the analysis and the interpretation of this typical geochemical prospecting case. A number of people on the staff of International Oil & Gas, Inc. have participated in this prospect, as have students from Southeast Missouri State University and their professor, Gary M. Lowell. In addition, the Missouri Geological Survey has been most helpful with records and letters on the century-old prospecting and mining in the general area. Many valuable discussions have also been held with geologists from the industry who, from time to time, have visited the area, examined the property and reviewed the status of the project. The support and interest from all these parties has made it possible to pursue and expand this exploration concept from one of being just "more of the same kind" to the most chal-1enging and exciting with which this author has ever been involved, namely the prospect for tin porphyry deposits in the mid-continent United States.

The Natural Gas Act, of 1938, which put interstate pipelines under the jurisdiction of the Federal Power Commission, did not place a protective competitive shield around such companies - nor does any provision of the act guarantee them a profit. Natural-gas pipelines are competitive with each other and also with the coal and oil industries. Gas distributing companies must compete not only with the coal and oil industries, but also with the electric industry. Natural gas has captured markets from oil, which had taken them from coal. Oil men contend that gas prices have: been, held to an artifically low level by regulation. The electric industry is moving into the space-heating market, which pleases the coal people because the coal industry's largest customer since losing the railroads to dieselization has been the electric companies. The coal industry is attempting to monopolize the industrial and electric generating market through government intervention, and this is being done under the guise of concern for the national welfare through advocation of a "National Fuels Policy purporting to, further the cause of fuel conservation. Such a policy is contrary to American principles and would result in the individual's loss of freedom of choice and ultimately, in less reserves of preferred fuels because of diminished exploration efforts.

A linear integer programming (MIP) model to solve the long-and short-term production-scheduling problem for sublevel caving operations is presented. The MIP model is designed as a multi-time-period problem to provide monthly schedules that meet production, blending and sequencing requirements. One of the most important issues during the development of the MIP model was the requirement of sequencing between blocks. In this mathematical model, unique constraints that ensure sequencing of the production from sublevels are developed. A suggested method of handling a large number of variables is also given. The MIP scheduling model was implemented on a data set obtained from the Kiruna Iron Ore Mine located in northern Sweden. The initial MIP model implementation was successful and provided a solution that optimized resource recovery while meeting monthly and yearly production constraints. The scheduling results obtained based on the Kiruna Mine are further presented and discussed.

The 5180 m EPBM drive on the Lower Olentangy Tunnel (LOT) is predominantly within glacial overburden. To connect LOT with the existing OARS deep tunnel in limestone bedrock, the upper 15 m inside diameter Vine Street retrieval shaft telescopes down to 6.7 m in diameter and extends into the karstic Columbus Limestone to a depth of 51 m, where a 104 m SEM tunnel will connect to OARS shaft 6. Pre-excavation grouting was reuired prior to lower shaft excavation to reduce potentially high groundwater inows. This paper discusses the secant pile installation, grouting program, shaft excavation, and hydrogeologic observations.

Propelled by the invention of the transistor at Bell Laboratories, germanium's unique properties have advanced our electronic world by many years. Germanium has found major uses in infrared optics, fiber optics and a revised vigor as a catalyst for PET plastic production. Other advanced applications are in various stages of development. The solid state electronics industry has been the driving force behind the accelerating demand for gallium since the late sixties. Past developments of substrates for light emitting diodes, lasers and magnetic bubble memories are paling in view of the current excitement over the use of semi-insulating gallium arsenide for high performance integrated circuits. This application requires gallium metal and gallium compounds of extraordinary purity.

This paper is a review of research and development on geothermal energy extraction in Japan especially on hydraulic fracturing. First recent geothermal developments in Japan are outlined in Part I. An increase in the production rate of geothermal wells may be highly dependent on the geothermal well stimulation technology based on hydraulic fracturing. The hydraulic fracturing technique must be developed also for geothermal energy to be extracted from hot, dry rock masses. In Part II, the research on hydraulic fracturing and field application are reviewed.

The discovery of the gold deposits of the Jerritt Canyon district and the construction of the E. R. Bell Mine is one of the significant mining developments in the United States during the past ten years. This mine will exploit one of the larger deposits of disseminated gold presently known, with proven, recoverable reserves in excess of 67.6 million grams of gold. Interest generated by the success of this project has contributed greatly to the tremendous resurgence in exploration for disseminated gold deposits in Nevada and throughout the west. The Jerritt Canyon project, including the Bell Mine, is a 70/30 joint venture between Freeport Gold Company and FMC Gold Incorporated, both of which are wholly owned affiliates of the respective parent companies, Freeport-McMoRan, Inc. and FMC Incorporated. Under the terms of the joint venture agreement, Freeport Exploration Company, another Freeport-McMoRan affiliate, manages the exploration and pre-mine development. Drilling, design, construction and management of the Bell Mine are provided by Freeport Gold Company.

The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc., an 81% owned subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in early 1988. Production at the open pit Grasberg deposit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold orebody is contained with a young igneous complex of dioritic composition which intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork.

Today many small diameter tunnels are being constructed in Metropolitan areas and towns as transmission holes for utilities such as water, electricity, natural gas and sewage, to name a few. These tunnels function as utilities beneath the streets, highways, railways, and other structures where open-cut techniques are impractical for any one of a number of reasons. Many such bores range in diameter from 15 to 72 inches and in lengths from 100 to 500 feet. Auger drills with auger type heads have long been used to bore these "road crossings" as they are usually termed; however, many such crossings must be bored in rock with rock-boring heads. Rock with a compressive strength of 15,000 p.s.i. and higher seems to present the greatest challenge for the contractor. These rocks include most igneous and metamorphic rocks and some sedimentary rocks. In general, this grasps most granites, basalts, gneisses, slates, schists, quartzites, limestones, and cherts. In the past ten years boring machines have been developed and used to excavate road crossings through hard rock. Many crossings have been successfully excavated using these machines, and the degree of success has increased substantially in the last few years. A variety of machines have been built and manufactured to bore most rock in a range of diameters up to 72 inches. The machines vary in capabilities, size ranges, and designs but all perform the same basic task and function of boring horizontally. Incidently, here the term horizontal implies horizontal or within five degrees of horizontal. In an ever increasing ?carbon? society; management and growth will be measured by one?s carbon footprint (or output). Industries, especially mining, are under an ever increasing scrutiny of carbon, water and environmental mandates. These mandates are measured by the emissions caused by the combustion of fossil fuels. The fundamental building-block for any business, strategic or management decision must be based on an understanding of one?s ?footprint?. The scrutiny is most stringent for the commodities producers, power producers & fuel suppliers in the energy market. An overview of currently acceptable standards, application of those standards and nuances experienced in collecting the data necessary to analyze and complete a company?s carbon footprint will be presented. A lack of regulation, the fear and expectation of new and ever constraining rules, regulation and a change in the federal administration is a recipe for uncertainty in the marketplace.
