"A South American nickel mine has been producing a nickel concentrate that also contains copper and iron (15 percent nickel, 5 percent copper, 28 percent iron) for the end use of stainless steel production. A critical specification for the quality of the steel is the iron to magnesium oxide ratio (Fe:MgO), with a ratio of below 3.5:1 having a substantial impact on the nickel value. This nickel concentrate producer historically mined the sulfur-rich mineral pyroxenite but had been forced to move to a magnesium oxide/silicate (MgO/SiO4)-rich mineral harzburgite, resulting in nickel recovery being reduced to around 50 percent to maintain the required Fe:MgO ratio. In this study, ore mineralogy, water chemistry and the chemistries associated with the flotation process were evaluated in an effort to increase nickel recovery while maintaining the Fe:MgO ratio according to specification. New chemistry was introduced with the specific goal of complexing with the MgO and retarding its interaction with the bubble flow in the flotation process.IntroductionGlobal nickel production in 2011 totalled to 1,770,000 tons, according to the Raw Materials Group (2013). From 1950 to 2005 there was an aggregate 4.4 percent increase in nickel production, with a market-value high of $1,000/ton nickel reached in 1998 (Mudd, 2010). Approximately 65 percent of nickel production is consumed by the stainless steel industry, with 12 percent of the remainder used in super alloys or nonferrous alloys. Nickel imparts corrosion resistance, temperature resistance and other benefits to its alloys (Table 1) (Oberg, 1996; Cáceres, 2003). The dominant types of nickel-bearing ores are classified as either laterites (limonite: nickel-iron oxide; and garnierite: nickel hydrosilicate) or magmatic sulfide deposits (pentlandite: iron-nickel sulfide) (U.S. Geological Survey, 2013a, 2013b). In 2012, about 40 percent of the nickel ore mined was sulfidic-type ores and about 60 percent was laterite. The processing of laterite ore is expected to continue to increase as the availability of sulfidic ores continues to decline."

In longwall mining, ventilation is considered one of the more effective means for controlling gases and dust. In order to study longwall ventilation in a controlled environment, researchers built a unique physical model called the Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) in a laboratory at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) campus. LIAM is a 1:30 scale physical model geometrically designed to simulate a single longwall panel with a three-entry headgate and tailgate configuration, along with three back bleeder entries. It consists of a twopart heterogeneous gob that simulates a less compacted unconsolidated zone and more compacted consolidated zone. It has a footprint of 8.94 m (29 ft.) by 4.88 m (16 ft.), with a simulated face length of 220 m (720 ft.) in full scale. LIAM is built with critical details of the face, gob, and mining machinery. It is instrumented with pressure gauges, flow anemometers, temperature probes, a fan, and a data acquisition system. Scaling relationships are derived on the basis of Reynolds and Richardson numbers to preserve the physical and dynamic similitude. This paper discusses the findings from a study conducted in the LIAM to investigate the gob-face interaction, airflow patterns within the gob, and airflow dynamics on the face for varying roof caving characteristics. Results are discussed to show the impact of caving behind the shields on longwall ventilation.

The dissolution of metals from various metal-mine tailings has been studied through a series of submerged tailings batch tests at U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratories. Tailings selected for this study included both reactive (as determined by column leaching studies) and benign tailings. Metal mobilization in aerated (97 pct saturated with oxygen) samples appeared to be consistently greater than metal dissolution from stagnant (79 pct or 70 pct saturated with oxygen) waters. In the early weeks of the study, sulfate concentrations increased with solid-liquid contact time, while calcium dissolution remained nearly constant. Metal concentrations varied in relation to solid-liquid contact time and aeration. Leachate pH appeared to be nearly independent of solid-liquid contact time for basic tailings. Reactive tailings having both a submerged and a surface component demonstrated increased metal mobility.

Coal is our most abundant, low cost energy resource. Expansion of its use is being challenged due to "SO2 emission" regulation with even more restrictive legislation pending. High quality coal reserves are becoming more limited due to greater use in recent years. Aids to allow more use of coal in today's environment include beneficiation of coal before combustion and scrubbing the emissions from coal during combustion. Dow's efforts to help meet these challenges by beneficiating coal include true heavy media gravity separations with chlorinated solvents and liquid/liquid partitioning processes and "Dow Solvent Recovery Technology" to recover the solvent from product (or floats) and rejects (sinks), The objectives of the efforts to clean coal are to reduce sulfur and ash. In this paper, the solvents will be described; a general flow diagram presented; some of the results on upgrading various coals will be described, and projected costs of full-scale plants using chlorinated solvents will be compared to conventional cleaning plants.

Hypochlorite leaching system is a strong oxidizing solution for metal sulfides, which are naturally associated with gold extraction. This study evaluated the hypochlorite leaching of refractory gold ore by using the response surface method–central composite design (RSM-CCD) as a statistical approach in determining the optimum condition of gold extraction from refractory gold ore. The studied parameters for the gold recovery were pH (4 to 6), concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 (0.5 to 1.5 M) and NaCl (2.5 to 3.5 M) in the solution. It was found that the maximum gold extraction of 82.46% (13.85 g/t) was achieved at a pH of 4.0 with NaCl and Ca(OCl)2 concentrations of 2.93 M and 1.08 M, respectively. The statistical analysis also revealed that the amount of gold recovery in chloride solution was significantly depended on pH as the main factor, followed by concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl.

Rubidium and cesium were discovered by Bunsen and Kirchhoff about 100 years ago. These two elements are by no means as abundant as sodium or potassium. Their occurrence in minerals is widespread, but usually as minor constituents. There is no known specific ore containing rubidium, but rubidium is found replacing the. other alkali metals in .some minerals.. Perhaps the highest concentration of rubidium found in one mineral is in lepidolite, KLi(OH,F)2A12Si3010, which contains from 0 to 3.5%*Rb20. 0n the average, lepidolite contains about 0.5% Rb20. Other sources of rubidium are carnallite, KMgCl3?6H20; pollucite, H20.2Cs20.2AI203.9SiO2; rhodizite, R20.2A1203-3B203; biotite, H2K(Mg,Fe)3A1(Si04)3; sea water, rivers, marine and fresh water organisms, soils, and plants. Cesium, even though it is the least abundant. of the stable alkalies, has a specific ore. Pollucites a hydrous cesium aluminum silicate, may con¬tain as high as 42.5% Cs20, although again, the average Cs20 content is about 25% among the handful of known deposits. Other cesium-containing minerals are lepidolite and carnallite. Rubidium and cesium are very much like potassium in chemical properties, consequently, they are hard to separate. Because of the difficulty in obtaining pure cesium and rubidium compounds coupled with the scarcity-of supply, prices were high and the two elements enjoyed little industrial use. What is meant by "Minimizing Risk"? This paper explores some of the factors encountered in plant design which can affect the success of a mineral processing plant in terms of its planned output, quality of product and recovery. Any deficiency in either one of these objectives means lost revenue at the start of a project and reduced present value for the mine life. Time is money. Related factors such as project conception, feasibility studies, capital cost and operating cost estimation and mining studies have been covered in a recent paper (1) from which material for this paper has been drawn. What follows is a discussion of the principal factors which can influence the success of a project with particular emphasis placed on processing concepts.

The conventional role of exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Nine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described. In summary, the role of the geological, the engineering and the mining department is presented in relation to the contribution each has to make in the evaluation and exploitation of ore from one of the world's classic Archean gold deposits.

Characterizing exploration prospect potential has aspects that differ from those encountered during ore reserve estimation. One problem is determination of the ore reserve potential prior to acquisition of significant volumes of hard data. The evaluation is subjective and data are usually sparse and of uncertain quality. However, estimations of the ore reserve potential are commonly demanded by management before project funding will be approved. The estimations from several prospects, along with the uncertainties inherent to the estimation, are then used to compare and contrast the potential of several prospects, often with widely varying geologic models.

Mine ventilation surveys were conducted by Technical Support engineers during June 1987 and September 1989 at the Dutch Creek Hine. The mine is located near Redstone, Colorado and is operated by Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. Following completion of the initial survey, several recommended improvements were incorporated into the ventilation system by mine personnel. The second survey permitted documentation of the effects of those changes on the ventilation system performance. This paper describes the processes involved in the implementation of the recommended changes. The substantial improvements in system efficiency and reduced operating costs are also described.

The U.S. Geological Survey, in support of underground testing of nuclear explosives, has developed a technique (Dudley, 1910) to predict the inflow of ground water to large underground chambers that are cylindrical in shape. By treating the chamber as a large-diameter well pumped at constant drawdown, the nonsteady discharge can be computed by the method of Hantush (1961) for analyzing flowing wells under leaky artesian conditions. In mining applications, whether for mineral recovery or for nuclear testing, the most serious departure from the conditions of Hantush's model results from the gradual enlargement of the opening under drained conditions. Inherent in the analytical technique is that the "well" is fully completed at the time that dewatering begins. Because safety is the prime concern, however, initial pumping systems or personnel evacuation procedures must be designed to handle the greatest conceivable inflow. DEFINITIONS Because somewhat different meanings are attached to similar words in different technical fields, the U.S. Geological Survey definitions (Lohman, 1970) of several hydrologic terms used in this report are given below. An aquifer is a formation, group of formations, or part of a formation that contains sufficient saturated permeable material to yield significant quantities of water to wells, and springs. A confining bed is a body of material lying stratigraphically adjacent to one or more aquifers and having a hydraulic conductivity distinctly lower than that of the aquifer. "Testing was conducted to evaluate the effects of hydroacoustic cavitation (HAC) treatment on two bituminous coal slurries and the subsequent separation of each slurry in a classifying hydrocyclone. HAC treatment was performed using a pilot-scale circuit fabricated by Furness-Newburge Inc. The circuit was designed to induce cavitation by means of flow through an ultrasonic resonator chamber or enhanced cavitation by initial flow through a cavitation chamber followed by flow through the ultrasonic chamber. The test materials were nominal -1,500-micron and -150-micron Illinois-basin bituminous coal slurries, which were obtained from an operating coal preparation facility. After 5 sec of HAC treatment, the median size of the -1,500-micron material was reduced, with ash values for certain size fractions decreasing more than 5 percent compared with untreated samples. Extending treatment time led to greater degradation of the +1,180-micron material and an increase in the -25-micron material, with ash reductions occurring for material in the -850+150-micron size range. Size degradation was less for the -150-micron material. Subsequent separation of the treated slurries was carried out in a hydrocyclone with diameter of 102 mm. HAC treatment led to a decrease in the ash value and an increase in the heating value of the underflow stream compared with the feed material. For example, the ash value was reduced by about 16 percent for the -1,500-micron material and 25 percent for the -150-micron material with heating value increases of 7 and 33 percent, respectively, after HAC treatment. Overall, HAC treatment appeared to have a slight effect on the size selectivity curves.IntroductionUltrasound in the range of 20 to 1,000 kHz, referred to as power ultrasound, consists of high energy waves that can create zones of compression and expansion when used to irradiate liquids (Frederick, 1965; Leighton, 1994; Mason and Lorimer, 1988). This action generates varying pressure regions leading to cavitation or the formation, growth and near-immediate collapse of microscopic voids or bubbles (Frederick 1965; Leighton 1994; Mason and Lorimer 1988). Collapse occurs when the bubble reaches critical size and cannot absorb additional sound field energy, and the critical size is governed by the ultrasound frequency (Shchukin et al., 2011)."

Since the Hardy Cross numerical algorithm was applied to the solution of mine ventilation networks, there have been numerous developments in ventilation network analysis procedures. The Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method, and the second-order approximation method are three of the additional approaches that have been applied. The efficiency of a ventilation network analysis procedure depends not only on the method of solving the system of equations derived from ventilation networks, but also on the method of deriving the equations through selection of the meshes. This paper investigates the impacts of three mesh selection methods on the efficiencies of four ventilation network procedures. The minimum-resistance spanning tree method is the most popular procedure for selecting meshes. The shortest-path method was suggested by Epp and Fowler (1970) for improvement of the Newton-Raphson method. The minimum-resistance-path method is suggested here as the third method of selecting meshes. The effects of these three methods on the Hardy Cross method, the Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method, and the second-order approximation method are analyzed in this paper. These network analysis methods have been summarized in the paper by Kim and Mutmansky (1991).

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is doing research on methods to obtain premining information on problems such as detection of old mine workings, abandoned oil wells, channel sands, faults, and other geologic features that are undesirable from a production or safety aspect. Techniques being developed to acquire the necessary information include seismic and electromagnetic. The seismic methods include high-resolution seismic and acoustic methods applied from the surface and inseam channel waves applied under- ground. The electromagnetic, or radar, methods are applied from the surface, from boreholes, and from the working face underground. All of these methods are useful under certain site-specific conditions, but none of these methods is universally applicable for all mining conditions.

Micro-computers have made it practical to install a high-speed acquisition system to collect data from a longwall face in near real-time. By simultaneous data analyses using neural networks and fuzzy sets, information regarding longwall mining performance and underground behavior can be provided and forecasting longwall instability and detecting geological anomalies is feasible. This paper presents details of the application of neural networks and fuzzy sets in developing on-line evaluation of longwall roof behavior. Techniques for interpreting longwall shield pressures and characterizing roof conditions are discussed.

The adhesion of Leptospirillum ferrooxidans bacterial cells onto the sulfide minerals pyrite and chalcopyrite was evaluated using two different physical-chemical approaches; thermodynamic and extended DLVO theory. For the parameters incorporated into calculations, the zeta potentials and contact angles of powdered solids and bacterial cells were acquired experimentally. The Hamaker constants essential for Lifshitz-van der Waals inter-action calculations were calculated following two different methods: macroscopic and microscopic. Adsorption tests were carried out at physiologic conditions to estimate the amount of cells adsorbed onto a mineral surface and the extent of alteration of that mineral surface in biobeneficiation. The free energy of adhesion was found to be negative for both minerals, indicating that the adhesion is energetically favored and preferred. The interaction energy diagrams of the total interacting force was also negative for the cases where the particles were charged oppositely; in the remaining cases, the total force was attractive after overcoming an energetic barrier caused by the repulsive electrostatic forces. Under the conditions of the adsorption test, the experimental results are in agreement with the theoretical; this suggests that the physical-chemical forces are crucial for bacterial adhesion.

In Novemeber of last year I visited a mica mine in Hunan Province, China. For nine months , we had been trying to sell Chinese mica to a customer in Belgium. Talking to the customer was like negotitating with a stone wall. The buyer refused to communicate any -thing other than his steadfast refusal to consider Chinese mica. He would not advise us what he wanted, what specifications or grades. He would give no indication if our price at market, or reasonable, or totally out to lunch. He would not even accept samples. It took no genius to guess that the mica buyer had at some time in the past bought a shipment of Chinese mica and had received a disaster. I invited the mica mine in Hunan in order to see for myself what could be done - without massive investment in equipment and instruments - to upgrade the quality of the mica for export. We had seen this type of customer reaction before. One disgruntled customer who had pur¬chased pigment grade barites direct from China ranted and raved about unreliable and inconsistent quality. It did no good to explain to him that China is a big country, with hundreds of mines scattered throughout many areas, each producing a different product. Our further explanation that Chinese export organizations also varied in degree and efficiency of customer service fell on deaf ears. Samples had no effect on his perception. Eventually we showed him photoraphs of two mountains of pigment grade barites. One lot was our sales of pigment barites to a major European minerals processor. Our Chinese barites stood proudly white and beautiful next to a hill of other material which now appeared at best mediocre and dull by comparison, and which the buyer had decided to reject after he received our Chinese barites. Finally the customer was sufficiently impressed to look seriously at our guaranteed specification and the outturn analysis performed by our other customer.

The western industrial world has to rely more and more on complex polymetallic sulphide ores as sources for base metals. These ores are composed of fine grained sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and marcasite. The liberation sizes of the individual minerals can range between 30 um and 5 um. Therefore, applying conventional techniques to recover these finely disseminated minerals usually results in unsatisfactory metallurgical performances with high losses of the valuable mineral to the slime , fraction of the tailing. New concepts for treating these polymetallic complex ores are discussed in this paper. Beneficiation techniques utilizing new reagents and a new approach to pulp preparation are described. Some of these techniques were applied to ores from existing concentrators as well as to new ores. The results of these studies are discussed in the following sections.
