The objective of this study is to assess the impact of different reagents, such as limestone, lime, magnesium oxide, and sodium hydroxide, in experiments carried out in the single purification step and in two consecutive purification steps by raising the pH of a rare earth sulfuric liquor with the aim to remove or reduce the impurity concentrations in the rare earth sulfuric liquor. The choice for the best purification condition was made based on the minimum loss of rare earth elements (REEs), reagent consumption, and residue generation. The exploratory experiments show that it takes place in the two consecutive purification steps, the first one consists in dosing the limestone pulp until it reaches a pH of 3.5 followed by an addition of a lime pulp reaching a pH of 5.0. Under this condition, the results were a total removal of Fe3+, PO4 3− , and Th4+ ions and a reduction of 99%, 87%, and 37% w/w in the Al3+, UO2 2+, and SO4 2− concentrations, respectively, in the purified rare earth liquor. Furthermore, the lowest REE losses (8.3% w/w) and reagent consumption (4.3 kg/m3 ) and also a low residue generation (7.5 kg/m3 ) were observed in this condition. Despite reaching similar results regarding impurity removal, the experiments done with the addition of limestone, lime, magnesium oxide pulps, and sodium hydroxide solution in the single purification step, where the pH was raised to 5.0, presented higher REE losses (64.9%, 42.5%, 44.8%, and 60.9% w/w, respectively) and a higher residue generation (43.2, 25.1, 11.1, and 13.6 kg/m3 , respectively). This occurred due to the co-precipitation of salts containing rare earth elements in their composition. The experiments conducted with limestone, lime, and MgO resulted in a higher consumption of reagents, while the same result was observed when NaOH was used (4.3 kg/m3 ). In the experiments carried out with the addition of magnesium oxide and sodium hydroxide, the respective purified rare earth liquors presented a high concentration of magnesium, sulfate, or sodium, which could impact the quality of the marketable rare earth salts, whereas the salts obtained under the best condition observed in this study seem to be amenable for use as raw material in an attempt to obtain rare earth products with an acceptable chemical quality.

The design of an aquifer depressurization system is discussed. The system uses a number of wells surrounding a mine shaft to reduce the aquifer pressure in the vicinity of the shaft. The effect of various parameters such as number of wells, wellbore diameter, time and well location is discussed. It is concluded that, with a properly designed depressurization system, the aquifer pressure and the water inflow rate to the shaft may be reduced to less than 15X of their potential values in the absence of wells

Significant quantities of nuclear wastes were first generated in 1944 as a byproduct of the national defense program. To establish the current inventories and future projections of nuclear waste products is not a simple task. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory recently issued a report which now constitutes the official basis for nuclear waste inventories and projections. Radioactive wastes originate from five major sources (U .S. Department of Energy, 1980b) : (1) From the commercial nuclear fuel cycle related to the production of electricity , (2) From defense related activities, (3) From institutions such as hospitals, universities, and research foundations, (4) From industrial uses of radioisotopes, and (5) From mining and milling of uranium ores.

The abstract highlights the challenges in concentrating complex and non-sulfide lead-zinc ores and emphasizes the importance of froth flotation for their beneficiation. The study focuses on using process mineralogy to understand the flotation behavior of these ores from the Görgü region. The ore samples were characterized using various techniques, revealing oxidation and carbonation of primary minerals. The flotation results were interpreted in light of the mineralogical data, explaining the poor outcomes due to the complex nature of the ore, poor liberation, and lack of hydrophobicity.

The ability of wireless systems—e.g., voice communication, proximity detection, tele-remote operation, telemetry, etc.—to function satisfactorily (coexist) in the presence of other wireless systems is critical to the safety and health of mine workers. The failure of wireless systems to coexist could result in the delay, corruption, or outright loss, of critical data, voice, or video information. However, no mining-sector-specific regulations, standards, or guidelines exist to ensure the safe coexistence of wireless systems. This paper introduces the concept of wireless coexistence, implications in the mining industry, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) research approach to develop guidelines and recommendations to ensure safe wireless coexistence.

"A long-term mine production schedule optimization based on stochastic integer programming is presented that manages the risk due to geological variability and uncertainty while jointly considering mine profitability, truck fleet requirements and waste management. The evolution of the pit is controlled so that space within the mined-out pit is continuously provided to allow for tailings and waste rock to be replaced, thus minimizing the project’s environmental footprint. The method is applied at a taconite iron ore deposit and has a project net present value that is 16.9 percent higher than that of a conventional schedule and has a higher chance of meeting production forecasts. The stochastic schedule reduces equipment requirements by delaying waste mining and by mining selectively in order to meet plant ore feed requirements without stockpiling material, resulting in 23.7 and 26.2 percent lower mining capital and operating costs, respectively. IntroductionThe LabMag iron ore deposit is part of the Millennium Iron Range, a 210-km (130-mile) belt of taconite in northern Quebec and Labrador, Canada. LabMag has significant economic potential. It contains more than 3.3 Gt (3.6 billion st) of proven reserves at an average total iron content of 29.8 percent and is very low in impurities. However, on a project basis of 23 Mt/a (25 million stpy) of product, the required capital expenditure is estimated at more than $5 billion (SNC-Lavalin, 2014), which necessitates careful evaluation of all sources of risk. Resource estimation is one of the main sources of risk in a mining project as knowledge of the orebody is primarily based on drilling, which is often sparse because it is expensive. If the expected ore tonnages and qualities are not obtained when mining, the project cash flows are directly affected. The expected quantities and qualities of ore and waste are defined by the mine production schedule, which specifies the sequence of extraction and is dependent on the resource estimation. The goal of mine production scheduling is thus to maximize the expected profit, while also meeting all production targets and constraints, by creating an extraction schedule that is robust in the face of geological risk and has the highest chance possible of actually being realized."

This study reports preliminary feasibility investigations for utilization of the selective carbothermic reduction and smelting (SCRS) processing scheme to beneficiate low-grade iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) mineral deposits from MN, USA. The study includes laboratory-scale demonstrations using an induction furnace and production of various products by manipulation of operational parameters. The products include alternative iron (Alt Fe), high carbon ferromanganese (HC FeMn), alternative silicomanganese (Alt SiMn), and upgraded manganese concentrate (Mn conc). All of these products have commercial value and can be used in various applications as raw materials.

Predictions of delayed environmental impacts from mining—degradation that won’t begin for hundreds of years, but will then continue for thousands—present new permitting challenges. Examples include evaporative concentration in pit lakes, which can eventually cause metals concentrations to exceed human and wildlife toxicity standards, and delayed degradation of groundwater by slow moisture percolation through acid-generating tailings and waste rock. Given the time-value of money, the present worth of such delayed impacts is insignificant, yet they are unacceptable undercurrent laws and cultural values. Long-term financial set-asides offer a possible solution, first funding infrequent, long-term monitoring, followed by more expensive mitigation when the set-aside has matured.

In 1971, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc~ established a program to provide the coal industry with the necessary information and technical capability to investigate and evaluate potential problems concerning trace elements in coal and coal-related materials. The initial efforts at BCR in developing or adapting analytical procedures for the precise determination of trace elements in the parts per million to parts per billion range were detailed in a report titled "The Development of Analytical Methods for Determining Trace Elements in Coal and Coal-related Products." A subsequent reports contained descriptions of reliable analytical methods refined by BCR for determining mercury in coal and coal ash and also in coal mine water. his paper reports initial progress in applying recently-acquired trace-element analytical capabilities to solving potential coal industry problems. In this case, the effect of a coal-cleaning process on the distribution and removal of potentially harmful trace elements in coal was evaluated. Coal cleaning offers the possibility of controlling potentially harmful emissions resulting from combustion of large tonnages of coal by removing the pollutants prior to combustion.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered critical minerals for industrial and defense sectors. REEs are not as rare as the word “rare” portrays; yet, the exploitable and/or profitable deposits of REEs may be found only in certain geographical areas. The political and social conditions characterizing these areas may not always be in favor of mining operations. These conditions are imposing the need for extra consideration on the geopolitical constraints prior to any decision-making and before any mining project begins. This study assesses the risk related to mining projects for areas that feature REE deposits based on a geopolitical viewpoint. Probable ranking differences between the current assessment and a 2015 assessment are discussed. The comparative indicators used and the appraisal procedure applied in this comparison are based on a number of different geopolitical indicators. Several ranking changes occurred between 2015 and 2019.

Separation of dolomite from phosphate is the most challenging problem in phosphate mineral processing. Over 50% of the future phosphate reserves in Florida contains too much dolomite to process using the current industry practice. The FIPR Institute has collaborated with worldwide experts in the field to address this issue. As a result, the industry is now offered with three feasible options. Optional 1 involves crushing and grinding of high-dolomite phosphate pebbles followed by dolomite flotation at slightly acidic pH using a new collector that does not require phosphoric acid as a phosphate depressant, achieving a final concentrate analyzing less than 0.9% MgO at about 87% P2O5 recovery. Option 2 offers three methods for reducing MgO content in the concentrate from the Crago process, including adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation step, dolomite flotation of the cleaner concentrate, and scrubbing the cleaner concentrate in quartz sand. These methods could reduce MgO content in the final concentrate by 20-40%. Option 3 is a gravity separation technique using an innovative separation jig, and may well be the ultimate solution to the problem. INTRODUCTION Magnitude of the Dolomite Problem With the depletion of the higher grade, easy-to-process Bone Valley deposits, the central Florida phosphate industry has moved into the lower grade, more contaminated ore bodies from the Southern Extension. The phosphate deposits in the Southern Extension may be divided into two zones: an upper zone and a lower zone. The upper zone is readily processable using the current technology, but the lower zone is highly contaminated by dolomite. Geological and mineralogical statistics (Hassan and Bogan, 1994) show (Table 1) that more than 50% of the phosphate resource would be wasted if the lower zone is bypassed in mining, and about 13% of the resource would be wasted if the dolomitic pebbles in the lower zone were discarded.

The potential use of prereduced pellets in the burden of the blast furnace continues to be a topic of interest. Several excellent papers have been written describing the theoretical and experimental rewards. (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) Significant increases in iron output and substantial savings in coke consumption are major advantages over conventional iron oxide pellets. The savings are especially important in areas where good coking coal is at a premium. Lower handling and transportation costs may also be factors favoring prereduction. When considering the overall cost of making and smelting prereduced materials the optimum metallization level becomes significant. An analysis by Agarwal and Pratt of the thermodynamic aspects of blast furnace operation with all prereduced pellets shows that the criteria controlling coke consumption depends upon the degree of reduction and upon the percentage of oxygen (present as FeO) removed by solution loss.(8) The authors state that although the chances of obtaining large fuel savings are greatly improved when metallization is high, reduction to the highest degree, which is costly, may not result in the lowest energy requirement per ton of hot metal; thus, over reduction could possibly result in wasted energy in the blast furnace.

The profitability of coal mining operations is highly dependent on the performance of the coal blending and processing facilities. Many companies have recognized this fact and have instituted optimization programs that require large amounts of coal characterization data, extensive operational information and complex costing models. Unfortunately, this brute force approach to optimization is often overwhelming in terms of time and cost and is generally too inaccurate to be of value in day-to-day field operations. A simpler and more practical approach involves the use of ?micro-price? optimization throughout the coal supply chain. This fundamental concept assigns unit values to each type product (particle or groups of particles) passing through the production units. True optimization occurs whenever all particles with positive worth are recovered and passed to market, while all particles with negative worth are rejected. This paper describes the fundamental workings of the micro-price concept as applied to coal blending and processing operations. Several examples are also included to demonstrate the economic gains that can be realized via the application of this concept.

The wear resistance of an alloy in heavy mill liner sections may be quite different from that of the same alloy in small balls and other light sections. This fact was established by means of a well standardized laboratory test that was validated for ball mill service. The salient properties of mill liner alloys, including austenitic manganese steels, medium alloy hardenable steels, and abrasion resistance cast irons are described, critically compared, and quantitatively ranked in terms of mill liner service. Where they are tough enough the high-chromium and other martensitic cast irons (e.g. Ni-Hard) promise maximum economy, but their section sensitivity is a limitation. To overcome this an extensive research program studied over a hundred experimental alloys, ranking them for heavy section abrasion resistance by means of the laboratory test. Computer analysis of the results provided a parabolic formula in terms of composition, the apexes of the parabolas providing optimum wear resistance. From the extensive family of parabolas one apex was selected for intensive study in experimental liners, pilot plant production, development of quality controls, and finally full scale production. This is a 19% chromium iron critically alloyed with nickel and molybdenum and hardened by heat treatment. It has excellent resistance to various types of abrasion, but its chief advantage is in heavy mill liner sections, where it has about 25% better abrasion resistance than the best of the quality controlled chilled Ni-Hards. It is also tougher. After production problems were solved, a number of ball and rod mill tests were arranged on a guaranteed performance basis. Two of these, representing about 138,000 pounds of mill liner castings, have recently confirmed in service the superiority that was predicted by the laboratory tests.

Central Mexico's mining districts, opened centuries ago during the Spanish conquest, still form the backbone of metal mining in the country today. Beginning at Chihuahua City, the Second Mexican Mining Rail Excursion traveled southeast from camp to camp through this major mining area to Taxco. Improved exploration, exploitation, and beneficiation methods have permitted continuous mining of many old deposits, and led to the discovery of new ones. Minerals not sought by early miners-lead, zinc, copper, and fluorite-now contribute substantially to mining activity in central Mexico. Of Mexico's five physiographic provinces, the rail excursion passed through two: the Mesa Central, and the Sierra Madre Occidental. The Mesa Central province is a wide tableland with basin and range topography, containing important base metal deposits. Mining in this region is primarily of limestone replacement ore bodies. Massive deposits form horizontal mantos or vertical chimneys. In northern Zacatecas, the Santa Eulalia and Naica mines demonstrated this character. The Sierra Madre Occidental lies west of Mesa Central in northern states, then widens to almost the entire width of the country from outside Mexico City to the southern border. The area consists of volcanic beds, several kilometers thick. These intermediate volcanics are primarily andesitic, of Tertiary age. Resting on older strata of adjoining physiographic divisions, the volcanic beds are overlain by a thick series of acidic flows and tuffs. Economic mineralization in the Sierra Madre Occidental is vein-type, primarily gold and silver. Mines at Fresnillo, Guanajuato, Pachuca, and Taxco contribute to the claim that this region is the center for precious metals in Mexico. A third type of mineralization, contact metamorphic deposits, is commercial at Santa Eulalia. First Stop, Santa Eulalia Mine tours began with the Santa Eulalia unit, located 25 km east of Chihuahua City. Mining in the region dates back to the early 1700s. The oxidation zone was worked until 1790, but mining declined until Asarco arrived in the early 1900s, building a selective flotation plant for treating primary sulfides. Asarco still owns 34% of Industrial Minera Mexico, S.A. (IMMSA), operator of the Santa Eulalia mine. Santa Eulalia currently has a milling capacity of 850 t/d. The San Antonio and Buena Tierra mines provide feedstock. Head grades at San Antonio, the mine participants toured, average 80-120 g/t of silver, 1.5-4.5% lead, 4-16% zinc, and 0.1-2.5% copper. Tin and vanadium were also recovered between 1930 and 1940. Estimated proven and probable reserves total about 7.6 Mt, although 1.8 Mt of reserves are located in areas of high water pressure and volume, which makes extraction difficult. Water is a significant production problem at the San Antonio mine. In one area, an AX drill hole encountered 2.6 m3/min (700 gal/min) at a pressure of 2.5 kPa. In 1852, six barrels of iron ore were loaded aboard the steamer Baltimore at Marquette, MI, after a trip by mule wagon from the nearby Cleveland Iron Mining Co. Shipped to Sault Ste. Marie, they were portaged around rapids and reloaded onto another ship for the final journey to the steel mills of Cleveland. In 1855, the same company-the predecessor of Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.-chartered the brigantine Columbia to carry the first iron-ore cargo through the newly opened Soo locks. In 1981, about 2,190 iron-ore shipments in the form of taconite pellets were transported by water from US Great Lakes-ports. The total volume during the 284-day shipping season was 63 Mt (62 million It). Counting Canadian ship¬ments, almost 76 Mt (75 million It) of iron ore were moved on the lakes last year. The five Great Lakes-Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario-contain 20% of the world's fresh water. The area surrounding the lakes has 26% of the nation's populations, 47% of its steel production, and over 80% of the raw materials required to make steel. That figure includes 71% of the country's iron ore and 40% of its limestone. Only the availability of low-cost water transportation of raw materials has kept the heartland steel producers competitive. Iron ore shipped on the lakes originates in the Lake Superior district's Mesabi and Marquette iron ranges. Major mines and their principal partners are Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.'s Empire, Republic, and Tilden; Armco and Republic's Reserve Mining Co.; Oglebay Norton Co.'s Eveleth; Hanna Mining Co.'s National and Butler; Inland Steel Co.'s Minorca; Pickands Mather & Co.'s Erie and Hibbing, the latter operated in conjunction with Bethlehem Steel Corp.; and US Steel Corp.'s Minntac. Pelletized ore products at these facilities is shipped through seven principal ports on the upper lakes: Duluth, Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Taconite Harbor, MN; Superior, WI, and Marquette, MI, on Lake Superior; and Escanaba, MI, on Lake Michigan. In 1981, tonnage volumes ranged from 13.3 Mt (13.1 million It) shipped from Duluth, to Marquette's total of 5.4 Mt (5.3 million It). The ore docks, with two exceptions, are operated by railroads, most of which are owned by mining companies. Table 1 illustrates US iron-ore shipments in 1981. In the lower lakes, ore is discharged at dock facilities close to the great steel-producing centers of Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo. Between the mines and mills, lakes and connecting waterways form one of the country's most effective transportation systems. Each year, vessels on the Great Lakes transport about 181 Mt (200 million st) of bulk industrial and agricultural materials-a greater quantity at a lower cost than can be achieved by any other transportation mode. We have all heard a great deal about how various projects were financed or certain companies were successful in obtaining a bank loan. There are many more projects and companies who fail to get the money they need. At least a portion of these failures, and a large percentage of the frustrations connected with even the successful financings, are a result of not understanding the process of obtaining money. Recent years have seen a proliferation of sources available to finance minerals operations, but let me assure you that these represent only a minor portion of the minerals financing market. The fundamental source of borrowed money to almost all minerals related companies remains the banks. Therefore, understanding the "Loan Approval Process" can easily mean the difference between getting the money or not. In the following pages I hope to provide some insight into what I define as the loan approval process. Having pre-offered my definition, I intend to delineate the various stages of the process and the planning and information I believe should be contained in each. My ultimate goal is to help you think like a banker and, in so doing, stay on top of the process so that you can successfully obtain the funding necessary for your projects.

Spatial variance of rock properties is an important characteristic of rock which addresses the heterogeneity of mechanical and physical properties and their effect on underground mining. Assessing spatial variance can be useful for both locating potential difficult grounds and performing reliability analysis in the mining support system. This study shows a microscale numerical model for rock material based on continuum mechanics. To consider the spatial correlation factor of mechanical properties in realistic rock mass, this study introduces a spatial correlation concept into the traditional type III extreme value distribution model. Based on the improved microscale random model, we conducted a series of numerical uniaxial compressive tests and one longwall mine model to investigate the progressive failure of rock. The results show that spatial correlation factor can significantly affect the load-deformation curves and fracture patterns. The spatial variance model was applied to a longwall mine that included several cutting sequences to observe the influence of the spatial variance on roof behavior. The cohesion and friction random fields induced failure that propagated randomly through the immediate roof in different entries. The results showed that the spatial variance provides an accurate prediction of erratic roof falls in coal mines.

No commodity agreements now exist for sulfur and a lack of reference to sulfur commodity agreements exists in the literature. Law (1975) made a passing reference to sulfur as one of a group of commodities where "there have been additional control efforts of various types." Clearly, sulfur was a candidate, at least conceptually in the past, for some form of commodity agreement and the following discussion centers on the world sulfur market of the early 1980's in this context. GENERAL THEORY OF COMMODITY AGREEMENTS The upsurge in demands for commodity agreements seen in the last decade or so stems largely from agitation by the less developed countries (LDC) for better economic treatment by more developed countries (MDC). Several economic factors, real or imagined, adversely affect the LDC's as follows (MacAvoy, 1977): 1) variable demand in MDC's causes wide fluctuations in commodity prices which hurt the economies of commodity producers, who are often LDC's although consumer economies may also benefit from more predictable prices; 2) a general decline of commodity prices relative to the price of manufactured goods which hurts commodity producers in their balance of trade while their stocks and overcapacity rise; 3) instability of LDC economies enhanced by the above factors lowers internal stability, inhibits foreign investment, and retards economic growth; and 4) a lack of self respect when dealing with developed countries o, following the OPEC lead, LDC producers want the stature related to cartel market power.

In 1958, the coal industry, through Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and the electric utility industry, through the Edison Electric Institute and the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies, initiated a joint program to study coal pyrite and its removal as a means of lowering the sulfur content of steam coals. It was assumed that significant amounts of pyrite often remained in washed steam coal not because available systems for coal cleaning were inadequate, but because the pyrite was small and widely disseminated, During the first two years, samples of coal were examined petrographically to determine the size, association, and mode of occurrence of the pyrite in the raw coal and in the products of laboratory separation, Samples of coal were also pulverized in different equipment to determine how effectively pyrite was released by pulverization and if the mode of pulverization affected the liberation of pyrite. From these studies, the following tentative conclusions were made (1 ): 1. Much of the coal pyrite is within a 250-70 micron size range, and therefore is too small to be removed by conventional coal cleaning, but relatively large when compared to the size of coal as pulverized for combustion in large boilers. 2. The degree of pyrite liberation is mainly determined by the size of the product and not by the type of crusher. 3. For improved pyrite removal, the coal should be cleaned during or after pulverization at the power station.
