Dumper operators are frequently exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) in surface mines. Surface mining activities involve the amalgamation of comparatively high intensity of vibration and extended exposure durations. Efficient risk reduction mandates knowing of important phases of a task that poses a threat to health of dumper operators. So far in India very limited studies have been reported on WBV exposure with regard to surface mines. This paper evaluates WBV of dumper operators based on ISO 2631-1:1997 Standards and European Union (EU) Directive 2002 for different phases of job cycle. Six dumpers were considered for this study and the vibration measurements were made for all the four phases of the job cycle by placing the triaxial accelerometer on the operator’s seat-surface and at the seat-back, independently. The findings of the study revealed that the haulage task (loaded travel and empty travel) remains the chief contributor to vibration exposure according to seat-surface and seat-back measurements. Maximum frequency weighted root mean square (RMS) of 1.12 m/s2 and 1.09 m/s2 were reported for empty travel task for seat-surface and seat-back measurements, respectively. For seat-surface measurements based on RMS, Z axis remains as the dominant axis of vibration for all the dumpers during haulage task, whereas for seat-back measurements, the dominant axis varies between X and Y. Exposure action value (EAV) based on RMS has exceeded the threshold value of 0.5 m/s2 for all the dumpers during loaded travel and empty travel for seat-surface as well as for seat-back measurements.

In 1965 Hoogovens was looking for additional capacity for burden preparation in the order of 2,5 to 3 million metric tons per annum of some kind of optimal blast furnace ore feed. In principle four solutions offered them-selves for further investigation: 1. purchase of screened ore and/or run of mine ores with the provision of a corresponding ore screening capacity on the blast furnace site; 2. manufacture of sinter; 3. purchase of pellets; 4. manufacture of pellets. After studying the technological, technical, economical and commercial factors Hoogovens decided for the last mentioned possibility. Before taking this decision not only a great number of different mixtures of iron ore were tested, but during a long period in one of the big blast furnaces a number of tests were also executed with purchased pellets from South and North America. It was found, that using 50% acid pellets with 40% basic sinter a coke rate saving of 25 kg per ton hot metal (50 lbs/net THM) and a production gain of 15% could be obtained as compared with a full sinter practice. With some pellets it became clear, that due to properties, commonly referred to as swelling, we got very poor furnace performances; so in studying the production of pellets, pellet quality should be regarded as the most important aspect of the problem.

Typically, rougher molybdenite flotation and recovery from bulk copper/ molybdenum concentrates involves the use of alkalisulfides, Nokes reagents, cyanides, oxidants, and/or thermal treatment for the depression of copper sulfide minerals. The bulk copper/molybdenum feed generally varies from 0.2% Mo to 1.0% Mo, and with traditional reagents the single-stage rougher flotation recovery of molybdenite varies between 40 and 90% at a concentrate grade of 5 to 10% Mo. With ozone conditioning for copper depression, however, improved separations appear to be possible, as demonstrated by tests with Cu/Me concentrates from both the Phelps Dodge Morenci Operations and the Kennecott Copperton Operations. Single-stage rougher flotation after ozone conditioning can provide a molybdenum concentrate at a recovery of more than 90% and a rougher concentrate grade higher than 20% Mo in some cases. Subsequent cleaner flotation with additional ozone conditioning results in relatively copper-free molybdenum concentrates containing as much as 52% Mo. Preliminary analysis indicates that, with a multistage ozone conditioning/flotation strategy, the process is technically and economically viable and should be suitable for industrial application.

The paper describes the unique operating features of the Lebanon Concentrator Plant wherein both magnetic concentration and froth flotation are used. Chalcopyrite is selectively floated by the use of dual collectors, Aerofloats and secondary butyl xanthate. Both potassium ethyl xanthate and sodium isopropyl xanthate (dual collectors) are dissolved and emulsified with pine oil for the flotation of the pyrite. Sketches describing the plant operations are presented and plant operating metallurgical results obtained are also given. The optimum production of minerals by the froth flotation process is normally achieved [ ] smooth operating conditions, The process, because of its many variables, becomes an art as well as a science. Therefore, any phase of the operation which will aid the operator in his control of the numerous variables will help produce a smoother operating plant, One of the most important variables which the operator deals with is the addition of reagents, These are usually costly items and should be used discretely with minimum amount of waste, The danger is that ,this emphasis may reduce the reagent amount to a point below that required, or, on the other hand an excessive amount is added, Both conditions usually yield poor results. The drea of the metallurgist is to provide the operator with the tools enabling him to produce a good mineralized froth at all times. Normally the operator has no control concerning the type of reagents which he must use. This has usually been worked out for him in the laboratory and by plant-scale tests. He does have limited authority to control the amounts of the reagents at his disposal. This, I believe, is as it should be. However, the operator should be provided with the best combination of reagents for his particular job. The providing of this combination of reagents for his particular job, The providing of this combination is often difficult, yet it is very important in order to yield good results, With this in mind, the dual collector idea was introduced for the selective flotation of chalcopyrite, and also later for the flotation of pyrite at the Concentrator Plant of the Bethlehem Cornwall Corporation in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Supplying several types of collectors has given the operator an additional effective tool, even though great variations are encountered in ore tonnage treated and in ore composition, This paper deals with the use of the dual collectors and with the addition of the reagents in the form of a pine oil emulsion, or more accurately, a pine oil suspension. It is hoped that other operators may find the ideas helpful. There does not seem, to me, to be definite scientific fact which would substantiate the necessity for the use of dual collectors. However, in actual operations, the metallurgical results at Lebanon became more uniform with the use of dual collectors, I look upon it as an "insurance policy" which greatly aids the operator during those periods when he is having trouble, One theory has been advanced, i.e. one collector has a greater tendency to float the coarser minerals, whereas the other one may float the finer ones. Consequently, a combination of the two collectors will result in optimum recoveries, There has been some evidence that this is true, but it is not conclusive, on the other hand, the use of a xanthate-pine oil suspension (or emulsion) should speed up the surface reaction of the collector with the sulfide minerals, result¬ing in more uniform flotation, This has definitely happened in our particular case. A more interesting unexplainable observation has also occurred; i.e., the xanthate solution does not appear to lose its strength as rapidly when it is in the form of an emulsion (or suspension), This was first observed when a 50 gallon drum of a 20% ethyl xanthate solution was taken to Wilmington, Delaware, for a laboratory test, using a homogenizer to produce the xanthate-pine oil emulsion. Upon arrival, the drum of xanthate had developed a considerable internal pressure, The relief of this pressure was accompanied by a strong odor, When the emulsion was returned to Lebanon for the plant test orders were issued to release the pressure prior to emptying the emulsion. Nopressure had developed within the drum and there was no unusual odor present, Since this time it has been observed that xanthate pine oil suspensions have greatly decreased the possible decomposition of the xanthate solutions. In fact, suspensions have been exposed for more than a month without apparently effecting their reactions in the flotation plant. On the other hand, we found that the regularly mixed concentrated xanthate solutions, after standing for several days, did not give the same results as the freshly made ones. This effect was greatly reduced by the use of xanthate pine oil suspension (or emulsion)

Dust generation and its dispersion in a longwall mine pose significant health and safety issues. The concern is prominent at both the working face, where coal excavation exposes workers to high dust concentrations, and also in the return, where float dust accumulates. To address this issue, researchers at theUniversity of Kentucky designed and fabricated a flooded-bed dust scrubber integrated into a full-scale physical model of a longwall shearer. This mock-up was installed in the longwall test gallery at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). A full-factorial experiment was designed to measure the effectiveness of the scrubber on dust capture. Test results indicated dust reduction of up to 57% in the return airways. This paper presents the development of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and its validation by comparing the simulation results against the experimental results. The CFD simulations show good agreement with experimental results with differences between + 6.9 and − 9.7%. The validated CFD model was used further to predict the scrubber performance under additional operating conditions, resulting in a dust reduction of up to 66.5%. With this level of success, the scrubber concept can be a game changer for the mining industry, and it can be utilized to improve health and safety in longwall mines.

"There are few people more qualified to speak of the tumultuous times in the global mining industry during the past four years than Newmont Mining Corp. president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg.Goldberg stepped into his current position in 2012, just before MINExpo 2012. Gold prices had hit record highs not long before that ($54.15/g or $1,856.40/oz on Sept. 8, 2011), expansions were happening around the world and the gold mining sector was still living in the glow of one of its longest upswings in history.That all changed between April 8 and April 15, 2013 when the price of gold dropped by nearly $200/oz ($46.27/g or $1,586.20/oz on April 8 to $40.45/g or $1,386.80/oz on April 15), putting an end to the decade-long mining boom and forcing mining companies like Newmont to re-evaluateeverything.Three years later, with the gold sector recovering, Newmont Mining is not only surviving but is thriving with a pair of mines coming online, Long Canyon in Nevada and Merian in Suriname. On Oct. 1, the Merian Mine went into production on time and more than $150 million under the initial development capital budget.Goldberg, who was one of the featured speakers at the opening session of MINExpo International 2016 on Sept. 26, also spoke with Mining Engineering about the previous four years and the future of the industry.“Mining goes through cycles all the time and gold is no different,” Goldberg told Mining Engineering when asked about surviving the downturn since 2012. “I thought it was important that we take a good methodical and steady approach across the business to determine what was the right thing to do and to set the business up to improve performance. Anyone can cut costs for the short term, but we set out to do it in a sustainable and reliable way. We created a program we call Full Potential to look for sustainable ways to reduce costs and improve productivity. That program has taken more than a billion dollars out of our costs since we implemented it 2013 and that shows up in our results. Our all in sustaining costs are down 28 percent and our productivity is up 39 percent.”During the downturn, Newmont restructured its business model, sold off some assets and created a leaner, more nimble operation. It has paid off with the addition of two new mines and the acquisition of another, the Cripple Creek & Victor Mine in Cripple Creek, CO.“The gold industry had not seen a downturn in 12 years. We had half a generation that had not experienced a downturn, so helping them through that in an organized way and keeping a view toward the long term throughout the downturn was important. We were one of the few companies that continued to invest in assets,” he said."

The study explored a new combination amine collector (XK-28) that can obtain better flotation index and defoaming rate for magnetic iron ore. A pure quartz mineral test indicates that dodecylamine, XK-I, or XK-II has good collection effect on quartz and their best flotation pH is in the range of 6–7. The experimental results of a combination collector (XK-I:XK-II = 2:8.) show that the separation effect for quartz and magnetite is better than that of a single collector. The single factor for actual mineral test shows that when the combined reagent is used as the collector, the best conditions are pH = 7, 90 g/t dosage, and XK-I:XK-II = 2:8, which is consistant with the pure mineral test. The difference for dodecylamine as a collector is that the optimal dodecylamine dosage is 60 g/t. Under the best conditions of actual ore test, dodecylamine and XK-28 are respectively used as the collector to compare the flotation indexes. Study results indicate the magnetite grade using XK-28 as the collector is higher by 3.02% than that of using dodecylamine, recovery is increased by 1.92% over that of using dodecylamine. Based on the measurement results of zeta potential, uses of XK-28 can slightly increase the zeta potential difference of quartz and magnetite to enhance the flotation effect. The mechanism of action between the XK-28 collector and the actual ore from the Gongchangling plant is physical adsorption, and this adsorption also has hydrogen bond formation. Contact angle results shows that XK-28 improves the hydrophobicity of quartz better than dodecylamine. Compared with dodecylamine, XK-28 is more sparsely arranged on the surface of the foam. The foam produced by the XK-28 collector has better air permeability and it is more likely to merge and disappear with bubbles.

Proper use of natural resources is multiple use. Underground space resulting from mineral extraction offers opportunities for deep geologic waste disposal (DGWD) which can solve many environmental problems. U.S. government projects plan to use specially mined excavations to dispose of radiotoxic and mixed waste. DGWD takes careful planning, technology transfer, and true partnership between waste generators and mine/repository operators. Using the experience, accumulated by domestic projects in preparation, and by foreign repositories in operation, U.S. mines can claim their rightful share of the growing market for DGWD.

In our work as health physicists*, we do a lot of public speaking and interaction with the public on issues related to development of uranium mining and milling (?uranium recovery?) in the US. Understandingly, the public has important concerns about this. Accordingly, this paper is presented in a ?question and answer? format in which we have tried to capture what are some of the most common concerns we hear from citizens and address them. We have attempted to do so based on the best scientific information we have, representing information well documented in peer-reviewed scientific literature and consensus positions from both national and international scientific standard setting bodies and related committees. Reserves of potash are more than adequate to meet future world demand for this primary fertilizer nutrient. The bulk of both reserves and current production is located in only a few countries. Recent attention has focused on potential development of smaller reserves to supply local markets in developing areas of the world. However, most new capacity in the next decade will be built in countries with large current production and reserves. The paper reviews current and future projects that will add to the world supply of potash.

Pyrite cinder is generated by roasting pyrite for sulfur dioxide production. It contains up to 62% iron, but also may contain other hazardous or toxic materials such as Zn, Pb, As, T1, Cd, Cu, Sn and S. Furthermore, the physical characteristics are not properly suited for conventional sintering. As a result pyrite cinder is considered to be unsuitable for iron and steelmaking or for outside storage because of its potential for causing environmental problems. In recent years industrialized nations have put increasing pressure on the manufacturers to either use such waste products or properly dispose of them. In this study, solutions to both the iron recovery and disposal problem were attempted by pelletizing the pyrite fines with internal carbon. The pellets, after hydrothermal hardening, were reduced and melted in a furnace for hot metal production. Hot metal of usuable quality was produced and the hazardous materials were either collected with the fumes or in the slag.

The mineralogy and textures of cyclone dust, sludge, and occasional build-ups in the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) direct iron making pilot plant at Universal, Pennsylvania have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy, and phase compositions have been determined by SEM-EDS. The cyclone dust consists of particles of carbon, metallic iron, sulfur-bearing iron, and wustite. Measurements of particles in the sludge indicate that 69% are less than 2.5 µm across, 21 % are 2.5-5 µm, and 10% are larger than 5 µm. Mineralogically the sludge particles are mainly carbon and metallic iron, with minor wustite and sulfur-bearing iron. Build-ups that sporadically develop in the furnace consist of olivine, hercynite spinel, metallic iron, wustite, pyrrhotite, pseudobrookite, akermanite-ferroakermanite and gehlenite. The microtextures shown by the build-ups indicate that much of that material has precipitated at the build-up loci. This study has been supported by AISI and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Rouez is a recent discovery of a major low-grade sulfide body (± 100 m, 0,6 % Cu, 0.3 % Pb, 1 ,5 % Zn, 21 g/t Ag, 1.5 g/t Au) in a populated farming area of Brittany, France, some 30 kilometres northwest of Le Mans. The discovery is the result of an airborne electro- magnetic (INPUT) survey. It is the first time that the INPUT method has been used in France. The survey Gas successful in spite of the numerous interferences normally found in populated areas. The lack of a good drainage system would not allow the discovery of Rouez using stream sediment geochemistry alone. Ground geophysical surveys confirmed the airborne work and gave sufficient information to make the first hole a discovery hole. The deposit is Proterozoic in age and sediment-hosted. The metamorphism is low grade.

The knowledge of aggregate size under various chemical and hydrodynamic conditions is very important for selective agglomeration, flotation and water clarification processes. Traditionally, aggregate size measurements are conducted using an ex-situ technique or in a diluted suspension. In either case, the measurement occurs in an environment that does not resemble the actual conditions under which the aggregates are formed. In this study, an on-line scanning laser microscope has been used to study the coagula size of micronized coal suspensions as a function of pH, solids concentration and agitation intensity. A maximum aggregate size of 310 µ m was obtained under relatively quiescent conditions and at pH values near the iso-electric point (iep) of the coal. The aggregate size results compare well with the coagulation efficiency measurements obtained under the same pH conditions.

In the earliest days of mining coal the obvious method was by bord and pillar working. Longwall in Britain developed from this as an expedient to overcome bottlenecks arising from ? 1) increasing depth of seams causing roof control difficulties; and 2) ventilation problems. This system became almost universal particularly in the thicker seams, where faces of up to one mile in length were not uncommon. Coal getting in these faces was usually by pick and shovel, filled into small waggons of up to 15 cwts capacity. These waggons ran on rails laid alongside the coal face and were often taken away from the face to the main haulage roads by horses. The roof was supported by rigid props and the wastes were normally controlled by strip packing. This system of mining was very flexible and worked well down to sections of about 3'6"

Although there has been an increased interest in the electrokinetic properties of coal (1) research on the subject is still in an early stage of development (2,3,4,5,6,7) To the author's knowledge, no electrokinetic studies have been made on coal lithotypes - particularly anthracite lithotypes. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the double layer properties displayed at the anthracite/water interface (whole coal and lithotypes) as determined by streaming potential methods, It is hoped that this investigation and related future investigations will provide correlations from which the surface properties of any coal can be predicted and then related to surface dependent processes such as froth flotation and flocculation. Another aspect of this research, undertaken to determine the physical and chemical parameters necessary for anthracite lithotype differentiation, was previously published (8). The number of parameters involved, lithologic, organic and inorganic, and the wide divergence of these parameters within an individual coal limits the practical utilization of the results, however, the results are of value and of interest in guiding theoretical developments. Keeping the limitations in mind, the results are analyzed in terms of their application to froth flotation processes and are used to indicate the feasibility of making a lithotype separation by flotation.

Large is the applicable adjective here. The largest hydraulic shovel in the world, the largest copper mine in the world, the largest copper producing company in the world. The O&K RH 300 hydraulic excavator has been put into service to move overburden and mine ore at the Chuquicamata open pit mine of the Chilean state copper mining company, Corporation Nacional de Corbre de Chile (Codelco). A large shovel: Equipped with a 26-m3 (34-yd') rock shovel, the RH 300 is able to fill a 170-t (187-st) truck in three passes with cycle times of 30 seconds. A large mine: At present, the Chuquicamata pit is 4 km (2.5 miles) long, 2 km (1.2 miles) wide, and 520 m (1700 ft) deep from rim to bottom bench. The current 450 kt/d (496,000 stpd) of material mined will increase to 600 kt/d (661,000 stpd) when the expanded production rate is reached in 1989. (Chuqui Expansion details, p. 20). A large mining company: Codelco's total output from its two open pit and three underground copper mines is more than 1.1 Mt/a (1.2 million stpy) of copper. This makes Codelco by far the largest copper producer in the world. It accounts for about 15% of the Western World's copper requirements. Chuquicamata is located in the hot and arid Atacama desert of northern Chile. The mine is located 240 km (150 miles) northeast of the port city of Antofagasta. Mine elevation is 2700 m (8850 ft). Chuquicamata's known reserves of oxide and sulfide ores amount to more than 450 Mt (496 million st) of contained copper. There are also reserves of more then 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of contained molybdenum. Originally, Chuquicamata was a rail pit. The shovels loaded rail cars hauled by locis on tracks along the benches. During the 1970s, the rail transport was replaced by truck haulage. Crushing and conveying rock waste in the pit is the latest step in the continuing evolution of more productive and economical methods of materials movement. In 1990, the in-pit crushing plant will be in operation. The waste will be mainly transported out of the pit on belt conveyors rather than trucks. The system will incorporate a 9.6-kt/h (10,600-stph) semi-portable crushing station, a 14-km (8.7-mile) conveyor using 1.8 m (6 ft) wide heavy duty belts, and a tripper-spreader to stack the waste dumps. Since Chuqui went into production in 1915, more than 2.5 Gt (2.8 billion st) of material has been excavated. This includes nearly 1.7 Gt (1.9 billion st) of ore from which some 16.4 Mt (18 million st) of copper has been recovered. The Chuquicamata porphyry type ore body is an altered and fractured intrusive granodiorite or quartz-monzonite porphyry that carries the mineralization. The action of ground water on primary sulfide minerals in geo¬logic time has created oxide ores and a zone of secondary enrich¬ment. The oxides occur above the sulfide zone and are also mixed with the upper parts of the latter. At Chuquicamata, the current grade of 1.5% copper is expected to decline to about 1% by 1995. "Justified is a show on FX that takes place in Kentucky coal country. The two main characters, a cop named Raylan and a criminal named Boyd, are adversarial to the very end, yet they manage to maintain a seemingly inexplicable bond of friendship through it all. The final episode ends (spoiler alert) with Boyd asking Raylan why that is. He responds, “If I allow myself to be sentimental, there is one thing I wander back to” Boyd responds, “We dug coal together.” Fade to black.What creates these types of bonds between friends and co-workers in mining? I don’t know about you, but many of my best friends I met in mining. Certainly the people I respect the most in this world are a part of our industry. Good, honest, honorable men and women. And I am not just talking about the leaders of our industry. I am talking about great miners who taught me how to do the right thing and also be productive.I have had the pleasure to work for some great people and the misfortune of working for some of the loudest screamers. What I consider the worst butt-chewing in my life may surprise you. I once worked for a man I respected, because he showed me respect. He went on a business trip and left some instructions. For some reason, I was able to justify to myself that they applied to everybody but me, and I disobeyed them. When he returned he called me into his office and said to me: “Tim, you pissed me off when you did that.” He said it quietly and with no anger. I had lost his respect. This devastated me more than any screaming shift boss ever could have. I learned a lot about values from that conversation.Most of us will spend more time at work than we will with our families over a lifetime. It is natural that tight bonds be created at work. What I believe makes mining special is that these bonds are so strong. They are strengthened by the incredibly hard work our miners do. They work at all hours, on holidays and in all sorts of extreme weather conditions. The physical demands of the job are sometimes exhausting. Our bonds are further reinforced because the work is dangerous. Not only does management watch out for the wellbeing of their people, but each and every one of us looks out for one another. The bonds are made tight because our people are so passionate about what they do, no matter the department or profession. Finally, they are strong because of the thousands in the industry that keep doing the right thing, every day. We make great friends in this industry because of the strength of character of our people. That is why Boyd and Raylan respected one another so much."

Chemical and mineralogical characterization of Malaysian monazite, a phosphate mineral, bearing rare earth elements separated from the tin tailings originated from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, was performed in this paper. The study aims to collect detailed information on the chemical composition, crystal phases, and microstructure of the mineral monazite concentrate that would aid to optimize the subsequent hydrometallurgical processes for high-efficient separation of thorium and other associated rare earth elements. A systematic characterization study of the concentrate was conducted using techniques such as optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These techniques analyzed the morphological details on the surface, elemental analysis, and mineral association assessment and identified the surface functionalization groups. The bulk composition and the mineral phases in which the elements are present were studied by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies respectively. The XRF analysis confirmed the presence of Ce, La, Nd, Pr, and Y (rare earth oxides: REO’s ~ 60 wt.%) while thorium dioxide (ThO2) accounted for 7 wt.% of the total composition. Traces of Ca, K, Al, Fe, Ti, and Mn were also confirmed by SEM elemental mapping. The XRD results confirmed that the concentrate was primarily composed of monazite (Ce, La, Nd, Th (PO4)) along with minor impurity phases of quartz. Automated mineralogical analysis was used as a confirmatory tool to corroborate the preliminary evidences. Based on the particle size distribution analysis supported by SEM, the majority of monazite grains were found to be present in the size range of 170–210 μm. Strong bands of PO4 and SiO4 were observed in the IR spectra corresponding to the phospho-silicate matrix of the REE mineral.

The electric arc furnace has characteristics which make it attractive for a number of metallurgical applications. Some of these characteristics are: high thermal efficiency, the possibility of attaining very high temperatures, low off-gas volume compared to fuel-fired furnaces, no impurities are introduced by the heat source, and impurities in only minor amounts are introduced by the electrodes. It also has disadvantages, the chief ones being the relatively high cost of electrical energy compared to fossil-fuel energy and the fact that, when oxide ores are smelted using carbon as reductant, the off-gases emitted are rich in carbon monoxide. As in many other pyrometallurgical processes, fumes and dust are emitted from melting or smelting operations. In many installations, some or all of the off-gases are flared, thereby wasting their energy and contributing to atmospheric pollution. During the last eight years, a shaft-electric furnace has been under development at the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada. This project was initiated to try to overcome, or at least minimize, the disadvantages of the electric furnace. Experience on other projects, prior to the beginning of this program, had indicated that preparation of the charge materials, for example by sizing raw ore, sintering concentrates and crushing and sizing the sinter, or agglomerating concentrates into uniform-sized pellets, could make a substantial contribution towards achieving success in arc-furnace smelting projects; This entire
