Automated temporary roof support (ATRS) systems have been incorporated into roof bolters since the 1970?s. During roof bolting, many injuries have occurred from large pieces of draw rock falling inby the ATRS beam and tipping back into the operator?s area. Other injuries have occurred due to smaller, sharp rocks falling onto the operator?s hand and arm during initiation of roof bolt drilling. These injuries are attributed to weak immediate roof, sometimes called roof skin failure. Even though ATRS systems support the roof and provide a measure of protection against roof skin failure, additional hazards sometimes do exist immediately inby and outby the supported roof. Design innovations such as the ATRS mounted rocker pad deflector systems have been designed to improve the roof bolter operator safety. This paper will inform the reader of the hazards, machine evolution through different design solutions, and the current state of the art in preventing roof skin failure injuries when roof bolting.

"The paper describes in general the objectives, goals as well as theoretical background of "METSI"-project proposal submitted to German BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research). The METSI project is a starting point for technology and know-how transfer of German water management and water treatment technologies to South African Mining industry. "METSI" is Setswana, one of the eleven official languages in South Africa, and means "water". It stands also for "Management System for the Implementation of Environmentally Sound Water Supply Technologies in South African Mining Areas with Involvement of all Relevant Stakeholders". The project focuses on development, design and implementation of mathematical models that consolidate and evaluate existing data and generate substantiated projections of "water" amount and quality. METSI covers a wide range of scientific, technical, social as well as economic questions related to "water in mining"."

Evidence of hydrothermal activity on two Mid-Atlantic Ridge oceanic core complexes (OCCs), at 13º30’N (the Semyenov 1 through 5 fields) and 13º20’N (the Irinovskoe field) (Fig. 1) were studied using CTD casts, dredges, TV-grabs and SP surveys during previous research cruises to these sites (Cherkashev et al., 2013, McLeod et al., 2009). In late 2013, the Semyenov and Irinovskoe fields were revisited, this time with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) during the ODEMAR (Oceanic Detachments at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) cruise on the French research vessel "Pourqoui Pas ?". Here we present the first visual surveys and direct sampling of these vent sites. High-resolution (~2 m) bathymetry of the 13º30’N and 13º20’N OCCs and their associated vent fields was collected during 4 and 5 AUV dives, respectively, using the GEOMAR AUV "ABYSS" (Fig. 1). These surveys were flown between 70 m and 100 m above the seafloor, typically at a constant height to reduce vehicle movement. The AUV was equipped with Eh, turbidity, and temperature sensors in order to detect active hydrothermal venting. Over twenty ROV dives with the ROV "VICTOR 6000" allowed for the visual exploration of the OCCs and collection of 59 hydrothermal rock samples from the vent fields. As a result of these exploration activities, the first robust estimates of the size of the deposits, and the geologic controls on sulfide accumulation at these sites can be determined.

Lineament analysis, a remote sensing application for geological structures, has been criticized for reliance on subjective interpretations. The Mine Safety & Health Administration’s Roof Control Division performs lineament analyses with a technique that removes much subjectivity. Study areas are viewed on satellite images with software that allows examination under artificial sun azimuths and elevations. Extraneous lineaments are removed through successive steps of superposition, resulting in selection of the most robust linear features. Field investigations revealed a strong coincidence of joint and fault zones that were parallel with projected lineaments. The Roof Control Division’s successful identification of lineaments associated with roof falls and highwall failures has prompted some mine managers to incorporate lineament analysis as a mine-planning tool. The identification of potentially hazardous ground conditions will allow mine operators to obviate safety concerns that might otherwise adversely affect miner health and safety.

Fan applications in the mining industry have changed during the last 70 years. In 1922, J.R. Robinson authored a technical volume entitled Practical Mine Ventilation. At that time, atmospheric control had only recently shifted from natural to mechanical. The large, mechanical draft fans that were used then were centrifugal. The fans ran at low speeds, about300 rpm. Most were steam-engine driven. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, mines became larger, increasing the pressure and volume requirements of the fan equipment. Axial fans were designed to run at much higher speeds (710 to 880 rpm) and were driven by electric motors. They were also smaller and less expensive to install than the cumbersome centrifugal units. However, changes in mining have resulted in progressively higher static-pressure requirements. So centrifugal fans are once again proving to be a good choice.

Through a unique partnership between the Colorado Mine Safety and Training Program (CMSTP), the Colorado Rock Products Association (CRPA) and the Higher Education and Advanced Technology (HEAT) Center, a video packed, dazzling CD-ROM training program was developed for new miners entering the aggregate industry. Why this product was developed, and why the aggregate industry, will be discussed along with the challenges faced throughout the project. Cooperation from every one involved including MSHA made this the product of which all other training materials in the mining industry will be measured against in the 21st Century. This product's versatility and wide application makes it a tool that is as critical to a mine's success as any earth moving machine. Developed with both state and federal grant moneys allows this product to be affordable to small operators and independent contractors. The quality of this two CD-ROM set rivals any commercially made CD-ROM training.

Viscosities of industrial lead slags with various compositions were measured as a function of temperature using a Brookfield viscometer. Based on the experimental data from this study and other investigations reported in the literature, an expression has been developed to correlate the viscosities of lead silicate slags as functions of composition and temperature. The effect of each individual slag component on the variation of the slag viscosity is identified. The composition dependency of viscosity of lead silicate slags is discussed. The calculated results using this viscosity expression are in good agreement with the measured data.

Performing risk analyses on tunnel projects has become common place and on many projects it is required from an owner or regulatory perspective. After the project is planned, designed and constructed, the data concerning identified risks, assumptions, costs, probabilities and mitigations is generally long forgotten and buried in some file somewhere. A study was performed comparing predicted risks versus actual events on several recently constructed tunnel projects. Probabilities and costs for selectively common risks on tunnel projects have been studied and re-evaluated. Conclusions are presented that can guide future projects and the veracity of the tunnel risk analyses performed.

INTRODUCTION The level of analysis for the selection of extraction practices and equipment for surface mining differs significantly from that found in underground mining. In underground mines, manufacturers establish the operating ranges of the equipment, such as continuous miners, loaders, and boring machines, based upon required clearances. Even in conventional mining, the drilling and blasting operation is usually based upon experience. The selection of extraction methods and equipment for surface mining is more complex. Since the equipment is not as confined as in deep mining, and the topography tends to be highly variable over the limits of the mining property, primary extraction equipment must be sized according to reach and capacity. Further, due to the depositional characteristics of the over- burden, drilling and blasting patterns must be well- designed to provide proper fragmentation. The following sections provide a general outline for the selection of surface excavation practices and equipment. The topics covered include drilling and blasting and the selection of both primary extraction equipment (draglines and stripping shovels) and secondary extraction equipment (bulldozers, scrapers, and front-end loaders). EXCAVATION FUNDAMENTALS Before discussing surface excavation, a few concepts need to be defined. A bank cubic yard of material is equal to one cubic yard as it lies in its natural or undisturbed state. A loose cubic yard is that portion of a bank yard that after being disturbed has expanded to measure one cubic yard. Swell is the volume increase of a material when it is removed from the natural state. Finally, load factor is the percentage decrease in the density of a material from its natural state to a loose state. Table 1 summarizes these concepts for various materials. When the amount of overburden to be removed to meet a predetermined production rate is established, a suitable bucket size for the primary stripping equipment must be calculated. The following equation can be used: NBSIZE = TBC/[(OF) (BF)] (1) where NBSIZE is the actual bucket capacity after considering the swell percentage, the bucket fill factor, and the operating efficiency; TBC is the theoretical bucket capacity (TBC = COB/NTCPM); OF is the operating efficiency; BF is the bucket fill factor; COB is the cubic yards of overburden to be removed; NTCPM is the number of theoretical cycles per month [NTCPM = (SMH) (3600)/(CT)]; SMH is the scheduled monthly hours; and CT is the cycle time in seconds. FRAGMENTATION PROCEDURES Drilling Where the strength of overburden material is such that blasting is required prior to excavation, drilling is conducted before using explosives. Two methods of drilling are found in mining-percussion and rotary. Penetration of overburden by percussion drilling is carried out by successive impacts of the bit into the rock. Emphasis in this section will be placed on rotary drilling, because for surface mining it is the most versatile form of overburden penetration. Rotary drilling is conducted by rotating a rigid string of tubular rods to which a rock-cutting bit is attached. The drilling energy is supplied by rotation as well as thrust and the cutting action consists of abrasion, scraping, spalling, or chipping. The size range for rotary-drilled blastholes is from 4 in. to 15 in., with 9 in. and 12 in. being common sizes. There are two types of bits used for rotary drilling-drag and rolling cutter. Drag bits are applicable in soft to medium-soft shales or their equivalents. Since their effectiveness is dependent upon a successful scraping action, drilling thrust is lower for drag bits than for rolling cutter bits; the opposite is true for torque requirements. The bits are usually fitted with replace- able tungsten-carbide cutters. Rolling cutter bits, though available in a two-cone configuration, are usually of the three-cone style (Table 2). The rolling cones have either large steel teeth for drilling through soft formations or small tungsten-car- bide inserts for drilling through hard formations. Table 3 relates bit size and weight to the strength of the rock. The major advantage of rotary drilling is its rapid drilling rate. This is due to the fact that, unlike percussion drilling, rock penetration is uniform with depth. The presentation named 'Dewatering of fines by Rotary Vacuum Disc Filters' has an opening why the filtration process is important to the Iron Ore Industry. It goes on to describe the various types of dewatering machines which have been used in this industry in the last 30-40 years, and where the vacuum disc filters now dominates. It presents also the most important design changes which have been made during this period to enhance performance. Further are discussed the principles of filtration and the factors and parameters which influence performance and operating costs. As a closing is presented today's ideas and thoughts about what can be foreseen of design modifications and improvements in disc filter design in the coming ten years.

To mitigate and control the combined sewer over-flows from 17 outfalls in Detroit, MI, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights, MI and eight outfalls in Redford Township MI, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km (7-mile) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. A small portion of combined sanitary and storm sewers serve the majority of the Rouge Valley water-shed. This includes Detroit, MI and most of the western suburbs. The Northwest Interceptor (NWI), that extends between Eight Mile Road and Ford Road and roughly parallel to the Rouge River, intercepts sanitary sewage and some wet weather flows from trunk sewers in the tributary areas for transport to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for treatment. During extreme storm events, when the capacity of the NWI is exceeded, the excess combined sewer and overflow (CSO) over-flows into the Rouge River through 17 outfalls to local rivers. The purpose of the Upper Rouge Tunnel system (URT) is to capture and significantly reduce the uncontrolled CSO from these 17 outfalls in Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township. The Jollyville Transmission Main will be a 10.5-km- (6.5-mile)-long, 213-cm (84-in.) diameter rock tunnel. The tunnel will pass beneath the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, which was established to protect two endangered bird species, six endangered cave invertebrates and a threatened salamander. To address the sensitive habitat that the transmission main is to pass through, the city of Austin developed an environmental commissioning (EC) process that brought together environmental engineers and scientists, the city?s project management team and the designer team to work collaboratively to meet the city?s goals of producing a cost-effective design while also protecting the environment. This paper describes the environmental commissioning process and the benefits it brought to the project and environment through some unique environmental mitigation measures to protect this sensitive area.

Development of the Batu Hijau Project was successfully completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the final handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The development project had started more than three years earlier, in August 1996, when the Owner, PT. Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an EPC contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for design and construction of the project including: copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site, and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and procurement of mine equipment with its own forces. Bringing the Batu Hijau copper deposit into production was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Development of Batu Hijau was a complex project involving the work of tens of thousands of people in all parts of the world to complete engineering, manufacture and deliver equipment, supply materials, and build the plant. The ore deposit is located on the tropical island of Sumbawa in a remote and undeveloped section of Indonesia. The location and environment presented challenges for all phases and aspects of the project. To meet the challenges, the project team combined good planning and teamwork to best utilize the resources available. This approach assured continuity of personnel through construction to operations and minimized cost, resulting in completion of the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

Dense medium cyclones are the preferred means for cleaning 1/2 in. x 14Mesh to 28Mesh (12.7 mm x 1.0 mm to 0.6 mm) raw coal and are becoming a common choice for cleaning raw coal from a nominal top size of 2-1/2 in. to 3 in. (63.5 mm to 76.2mm) down to 14 Mesh to 28Mesh (1.0 mm to 0.6 mm). During the last ten years, dense medium cyclone circuitry design has undergone changes which have combined to improve process efficiency. This paper describes these improvements and compares present day design with the design used prior to the mid 1980's. Improvements in the following areas are described: Raw coal desliming, cyclone configuration, drain and rinse applications, dilute medium circuitry, and instrumentation and control.

In bump-prone coal mines, roof and rib support is subject to dynamic as well as static loading. Although less frequently encountered, the dynamic loading component can result in violent coal expulsions into openings seriously threatening the safety of workers. Dynamic support systems that have been increasingly implemented in many deep hard rock mines for dynamic failure containment have not yet found their adaptation to deep coal mines at desired levels. This paper examines the potential use of some of these dynamic support systems in deep coal mining, particularly in the western United States. Fundamental principles of dynamic loading are reviewed in the context of their application to dynamic failure mechanisms in coal mines. Potential benefits and applicability of the suitable hard rock dynamic support systems are discussed in relation to coal bump mitigation. The resulting insight provides a starting point for development of dynamic support elements for bump prone conditions in deep coal mines.

Secondly, the supply and demand of non-ferrous metals in Japan. Thirdly, I would like to spare some minutes on the overview of overseas development by Japanese mining companies. Finally, since some people may not be sure what the Metal Mining Agency is or what this Agency, I would like to briefly introduce the Metal Mining Agency of Japan.

The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.4-km- (6.5- mile-) long, 14.4-m (47.5-ft) bored tunnel that will run under the city of Niagara Falls from the Upper Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck power station. The completed project will enhance the capacity of the Sir Adam Beck power station by adding 500 m3 /sec (17,657 cu ft/sec) of water through the tunnel. The project uses the world?s largest hard-rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) at 14.4 m (47.5 ft) in diameter to excavate the tunnel. Features of the project include the use of a high performance (HP) main beam TBM, state-of-the-art ground support and tunnel logistics systems. A continuous conveyor is used for muck transport from the TBM to the disposal area In June 2004, the Ontario government announced that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) had been given approval to proceed with the third tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls ? the first two tunnels were constructed in the 1950s using drill-and-blast techniques. The third tunnel, appropriately named the Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP), consists of a 10.4-km- (6.5-mile-) long TBM-bored, concrete-lined tunnel with a finished diameter of 12.5 m (41.1 ft). In August 2005, OPG the selected of Strabag of Austria, one of the largest construction companies in Europe, as the contractor to build the NTP at a price of C$600 million. In September 2005, Strabag selected The Robbins Co. of Solon, OH to design, manufacture and deliver a new 14.4- m- (47.5-ft-) diameter high performance, state-of-the-art main beam hard rock TBM to be used in the excavation of the tunnel. To meet the aggressive construction schedule as requested by OPG/Strabag, the TBM needed to be sup-plied as ready-to-bore within a 12-month period after the contract was awarded to Robbins.

Remote methane detection State and federal regulations require frequent measurements to verify that safe methane levels are maintained in underground coal mines. Ventilation control is the primary means of maintaining safe methane levels. In the immediate face area, where the highest methane levels occur, methane measurements are required every 20 minutes during active mining. To perform these measurements, temporary roof supports must be erected. This allows a miner to reach the face. There a hand-held methanometer is used to make the measurements. This procedure is time consuming and potentially hazardous. To facilitate the measuring process and reduce the miner's exposure to roof falls, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype optical device. It can measure methane remotely from distances up to 12 m (40 ft). The device uses two infrared signals, reflected from the coal face, rib, or roof. One signal is absorbed by the methane, the other is not. The ratio of the two signals determines the average methane concentration in the face area. The prototype detector has also been successfully tested at the Lake Lynn, PA Laboratory. Instantaneous responses were obtained for methane in the ventilation airflow and for methane layered near the roof. Conventional methanometers required from five to 25 seconds to respond to the methane in the ventilation airflow. They did not respond to methane in the roof layer. Ignition suppression system The incidence has increased of fractional spark ignition at the mine face. One reason is the advent of mechanical mining. Another is the more difficult ventilation conditions associated with deeper and more extensive underground workings. To cope with the problem of frictional ignition, the Bureau of Mines initiated research to develop a system that would provide rapid detection of incipient methane-air ignition. Then, rapid dispersion of a quenching agent would ensure that the methane flame was extinguished while it was still relatively small. This concept was successfully demonstrated by suppressing explosions in the Bureau's Bruceton, PA experimental mine. But the bulkiness of the early storage-dispersal system proved impractical to retrofit onto face equipment. In a cooperative effort by the Bureau and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a more compact system has been developed and is being tested. Borehole mining (BHM) is a remotely operated method of extracting rock material through boreholes by high-pressure water jets. Figure 1 illustrates a BHM tool and fluids circulation. The tool consists of at least two pipes, one for pumping down high-pressure water, the second for delivering slurry to the surface. This article reviews the BHM process. It discusses current and new applications for borehole mining and help the readers determine if BHM is applicable in their situations. Previous articles in ME about BHM explained either a particular project (ME, April 2001, pp. 33-36) or a newest patent in this area (ME, March 1991, pp. 313-318). However, neither one provided an overview on the modern BHM technology.
