"Modern underground mining is becoming more complex and geotechnically challenging. The engineer uses numerical, analytical, and data-driven methods (empirical and/or experimental) or their combination to overcome these challenges. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. Nevertheless, given the amount of innovation and experience involved in developing each of these techniques, it will be prudent to use all their benefits rather than favoring one technique over the other. Pillars are the most important support element in an underground mine. A holistic geo-mechanical solution needs to be determined to design mine pillars using a proper sequence and exact mix of the three methods. A combination of these methods, in sync, can encompass the several advantages of the three methods while eliminating their disadvantages. This paper presents a conceptual three-tier solution to the pillar design problem, to improve its design pedigree, using a proper combination of numerical, analytical, and data-driven methods. At the focus of this proposed method lies the Ground Reaction Curve (GRC) concept.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the stability analysis of underground excavations is a challenging problem, its understanding has improved tremendously over recent years through the use of improved tools and techniques. The trial and error method was replaced with more scientific methods like the empirical and analytical methods that are still in use today. Empirical methods were developed based on large data sets obtained from experiments and observations (e.g., coal pillar strength equations). Analytical methods were developed based on mechanical understanding of stability (e.g., safety factor for vertical pillar loading, Convergence Confinement Method). Improvement in computing power and numerical techniques led to the development of several numerical methods (e.g., finite difference, finite element) suitable for geo-mechanical analysis.Each of these methods have certain advantages and limitations. Nevertheless, the user is often puzzled over the proper method selection and over the proper sequence of using them. This exercise becomes more challenging when different methods are combined, where, for example, one has to estimate the pillar strength based on empirical equations (e.g., Mark-Bieniawski coal pillar strength equation), determine the factor of safety based on an analytical approach (e.g., tributary area load divided by pillar strength), and analyze pillar-strata interactions using numerical analysis (see Esterhuizen, Mark, and Murphy, 2010b).Challenges increase when current pillar design methods are designed as passive structures to balance the fixed dead weight of the overburden. This classic suspension design approach does not recognize the self-stabilizing capacity of the overburden (Frith and Reed, 2018). A practical solution to address these issues is the use of numerical analysis. However, one should always keep in mind that the numerical modelling approach may have certain practical limitations."

Underground construction often requires working within a very congested urban environment, including excavating shafts adjacent to highly sensitive and multistoried structures, sometimes even within such structures. Shafts adjacent to heavily loaded column footings are often required due to space constraints. Invariably, footing surcharges must be considered during the design of shaft rock reinforcement. Rockwedge stability evaluation reveals that column surcharges can greatly impact the ability to meet the desired factor of safety. Design methodologies and examples to deal with these special circumstances are presented.

Additional field evaluations of a modified continuous miner using a new spray system and modified scrubbers have been conducted by the authors. In this demonstration, a comprehensive package for dust control on a continuous miner which included previously developed modifications to the scrubber, scrubber intakes and the innovative chassis spray system was demonstrated. Side-by-side comparisons of the modified miner and regular miner indicated that the miner operator with the modified miner was exposed to 62% less respirable dust. Ram car operators with the modified miner had 38% less respirable dust exposure and the return air on the modified miner had 19% less respirable dust. The mining conditions during side-by-side testing were very comparable. These results support the findings of the modified spray system studies conducted earlier at different mines in Illinois on four occasions and the modified scrubber system field evaluation studies.

Limestone-based material shows great promise for removal of arsenic from water. In laboratory tests, it has removed more than 95% or arsenic and more than 99% of cadmium and lead. In addition, the waste material appears to be suitable for recycling or disposal in an ordinary landfill. However, the efficiency of limestone for arsenic removal could be improved. Recent research has shown that iron treatment of limestone can enhance its arsenic-removal efficiency greatly, increasing its attractiveness as an alternative to other methods.

INTRODUCTION The City of Phoenix, Arizona is located in the Phoenix Basin watershed which is prone to flash flooding several times each year. The runoff from these storms moves from the mountains in the north to the Salt River in the south. An extension of Interstate Highway 10 (1-10) will pass through the city east to west to form an Inner Loop through the downtown business district. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The I-10 Inner Loop extension will be a depressed roadway which would intercept the surface drainage of the Phoenix Basin and separate the watershed into two regions. To prevent flooding of the depressed roadway, runoff storm water collected from the northern half of the drainage area will be conveyed beneath the roadway to its natural outlet at the Salt River. A conveyance system composed of pressure tunnels beneath the city, shown in Figure 1, was proposed to achieve this goal . Table A presents the prominent features of each of the tunnels. This paper will describe geologic and engineering parameters specific to Phoenix which were used in the design of a series of tunnels to convey storm water from the I-10 Inner Loop to the Salt River. The design of tunnel initial and final support is described along with support and construction methods used by the Contractor.

The abandoned Belle Eldridge Mine near Deadwood, South Dakota, is on land controlled by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. The mine produced primarily lead and zinc during the first half of the twentieth century. The BLM has expressed concern about acidic drainage as well as elevated arsenic levels in tailings and waste rock at the site. The mine site was evaluated for remediation in 1998 and 1999. Recent reclamation and remediation work included substantial regrading of waste rock, removal of material where metal loading were of concern, and re-routing of drainage from an adit. Trenching at the site shoed a greater volume than originally calculated during site characterization. Material was removed to a repository that was constructed at a nearby drainage divide. Because of physical hazards, the BLM has decided to remove some historic structures. However, a search of mine records and an inventory of archival materials were complete to preserve the history of the site.

The Wachovia Headquarters and Arts and Cultural Campus project in Charlotte, NC includes a 1.5 million square foot, 48-story office tower, two museums, an Afro-American cultural center and a 1,200 seat theater for the performing arts. Public access to the Cultural Campus is through two pedestrian tunnels constructed under city streets connecting to parking garages. The 5.7 m wide by 4.7 m high mined tunnels were procured through a design-build contract. The tunnels were designed as initial/final shotcrete linings with a sprayed water barrier sandwiched between layers of shotcrete. In addition, the mix design was supplemented with a cementitious admixture to develop internal water resistant properties in the shotcrete.

Slurry diaphragm walls are commonly used as both temporary excavation support walls, and permanent structural walls, for circular shafts and long rectangular structures (such as underground subway stations); however, they are not commonly used for more compact rectangular or square shafts. In these instances, a second wall is typically cast inside the slurry walls to form the permanent structure. This paper discusses the approach used on the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in California to analyze these compact rectangular types of structures for static and seismic loading, and to determine whether or not slurry walls can be confidently used as both the temporary and permanent walls for two tunnel ventilation shafts.

INTRODUCTION The design/build (D/B) philosophy of contract delivery is neither new nor unusual when it comes to at-grade, elevated or high-rise structures. But when it comes to constructing underground facilities, there were no examples to be followed in early 90sin the continental United States or its territories. When DMJM+HARRIS was selected as general architectural and engineering consultant for the Tren Urbano (TU) project in Puerto Rico, one of the requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for funding commitment was to use TU as a demonstration project utilizing design/build contract delivery method. Now fifteen years later, New York City Transit (NYCT) has instituted a similar requirement for their first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) contract for the Second Avenue Subway. As with most construction mega-projects, lots of things have happened and there were several lessons learned from the TU experience that are now being applied to Second Avenue. Both of these projects require building tunnels and underground transit facilities in heavily traveled corridors of an urban city, in the vicinity of active business and commercial enterprises. To enhance the challenge, there are noise and vibration sensitive and historic urban receptors either over or along both the transit corridors. Column free Tren Urbano station caverns over18 m (60 ft.) wide were built in soft ground conditions within 3.6 m (12 ft.) of the surface under an aging heavy utility corridor, while NYCT tunnels with station structures stretching the limits of rock caverns to 34.8 m (100 ft.), were planned in rocky geology with the presence of shear and fault zones and some mixed face conditions. BACKGROUND During the early period of design/build experimentation, the speed with which the contract procurement packages could be put together enabled the owners to take advantage of the major efforts underway to rebuild the infrastructure that was suffering from post-World War II neglect. Use of design/build for new starts was unheard of and most of the projects were smaller in nature in order to allow the methodology to be tested. After forty years of exploration and development, the heavy mineral sand deposits of the Murray Basin are on the eve of substantial exploitation by Iluka Resources Limited, Southern Titanium NL and RZM/Cable/Bemax, whom plan to initiate mining and processing operations in 2005. A trial mining and processing operation was undertaken on the Wemen North strandline deposit in 2001-2003 by Murray Basin Titanium, a joint venture of Sons of Gwalia and RZM/Cable, which brought to light a number of mining and processing problems which have since been the subject of extensive studies and process development work. The mineralogy of these weathered strandline deposits is complex by industry standards due to the variety of the heavy minerals present, coatings on the mineral grains and the extensive weathering and alteration which has taken place during the past 50 million years. This paper provides an overview of the complex mineralogy that, in turn, dictates the processes that can be used to recover the valuable heavy minerals. The Murray Basin encompasses some 300,000 km2 and has been a depositional basin, often land locked, since the start of the Cenezoic Era. The economic heavy minerals include ilmenite, altered ilmenite, leucoxene of highly variable composition, rutile, and zircon. There are also other heavy minerals present such as cassiterite, chromite, and monazite in quantities that pose both problems and opportunities. The clay content and overburden thickness also play a major role in the selection of the deposits to be mined. Project Services Consultants (PSC) has undertaken the preparation of this paper as part of its ongoing participation in the mineral sands industry and in particular the project development activities in the Murray Basin region currently being undertaken by Iluka Resources. Caterpillar said it will produce a Cat line of ac electric drive mining trucks. The world’s largest manufacturer of mining and construction equipment said the addition of an AC electric drive truck line will provide its customers with products to fit key applications. “We are very proud of the strong leadership position that Caterpillar has attained with its mechanical drive trucks, and we will continue to invest in strengthening that position,” said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar’s Global Mining Division and Caterpillar Inc. vice president. “We also recognize that there are unique applications that would make the addition of ac electric drive an important and attractive complement to our current truck line.” This is the largest investment Caterpillar has made in mining trucks in its history.

On Dec. 20, 2013, an 8-m (26.2-ft) diameter Robbins hybrid single shield/earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (EPB TBM) was launched to bore the Grosvenor decline tunnel for Australia?s Anglo American coal mine. The machine was built using onsite first time assembly (OFTA) in order to fit within a tight project schedule. Assembly at the remote jobsite near Moranbah, Australia took about four-and-a-half months, and then the machine was walked down into a launch tunnel. Two decline tunnels, at grades of 1:6 and 1:8, will be used for mine access to new coal seams. The hybrid machine is tackling mixed ground conditions ranging from sand and clay to varying types of sedimentary hard rock up to 120 MPa UCS, as well as coal seams. Methane gas is expected to be present throughout the tunnel, so the machine has been designed as explosion-proof-compliant to ERZ-1. ?Grosvenor is the first underground coal mine in Queensland to use a TBM for drift construction,? said Glenn Tonkin, Grosvenor project director. ?We are proud to be pioneering this technology.? Only about 300 m (984 ft) of ground in each decline tunnel is expected to require EPB mode, while the rest of the tunnel will be bored in hard rock mode. Thus, the design was optimized toward hard rock excavation.

Graphite is elemental carbon that crystallizes in the hexagonal system as six-sided platelets. It occurs naturally and is mined. And it can be made artificially from petroleum coke in the form of shapes (electrodes) and powders. The market for most kinds of graphite in most end-uses was good in 2004. The 2005 graphite market looks positive. The major graphite prices, as given in Industrial Minerals, remained unchanged throughout the year. The preliminary 2004 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) prices for natural graphite showed almost no change for crystalline flake. They were $600/t ($544/st) in 2004 and$622/t ($564/st) in 2003. Mexican amorphous graphite was almost unchanged at $150/t ($136/st) in 2004 from$152/t ($138/st) in 2003.

Constructing tunnels in congested urban areas requires tunnels to be placed closer together and with less cover than was previously necessary. Contract CQ031 of New York?s East Side Access project will construct four six-meter diameter bored tunnels in a three-up one-down ?T? configuration, with less than three meters of soil between the tunnels. Mixed-face rock and glacial till conditions with a high ground water table will be encountered under active railroad yards. The tunnels will also pass beneath the busiest railroad interlocking in North America with cover as shallow as three meters. This paper discusses the challenges of designing segmentally lined tunnels for these conditions.

Worldwide production of natural zeolites during 2001 was estimated to be about 3.5 Mt (3.85million st). Construction and agriculture continued to be the major consumers. Estimated production in North America during 2001, including the United States, Canada and Mexico, was about 40 kt (44,000 st). In the United States and Canada, the zeolitic tuffs are ground, extruded or modified for use as adsorbents, desiccants, ion-exchange media and carriers. In Mexico and the rest of the world, the zeolitic tuffs are cut into dimension stone that is used in construction. Zeolitic tuffs are usually composed of the minerals clinoptilolite, mordenite or both. They occur in a variety of colors and are easy to cut and shape. And they have low thermal conductivity. This construction application is classified with dimension stone rather than with chemical and agricultural uses.

Flooding of open pits now receives considerable attention from the mining industry as an option that may minimize environmental impacts, particularly when anoxia in pit lake deep waters can effectively eliminate oxidation of pit-wall sulphides. A state-of-the-art, coupled physical-geochemical pit lake model is used to verify that a cost-effective, environmentally responsible closure strategy for the open pit at the Kori Kollo gold mine, southeast of La Paz, Bolivia is to adopt a controlled, two-stage infilling of the open pit upon cessation of operations. By filling the pit initially with highly saline waters from evaporation/infiltration basins and naturally saline deep groundwater, followed by capping with fresh river water, a very stable and strongly stratified pit lake will be developed. In addition, the stratification will result in the isolation of metal-rich saline bottom waters from surface waters of good quality. Results of this model provide defensible predictions of the physical stability and evolution of water quality in the Kori Kollo pit lake over time. The model results indicate that anoxic conditions will develop below the fresh-saline water boundary within 1 to 2 years, followed by the rapid onset of sulphate reducing conditions in the bottom waters. Hydrogen sulphide produced by sulphate reduction will readily react with dissolved metals to form highly insoluble metal sulphides. The process results in the gradual removal of metals from the water column and the concomitant improvement of water quality over time. A notable benefit of this strategy is that it can be fully integrated with other mine site closure options as well as future environmental management strategies. The proposed plan allows for: 1) safe storage of saline evaporation basin waters; 2) the potential for passive treatment in anoxic bottom waters of ARD seepages from other mine site operations should they arise; and 3) a repository for future reactive wastes that could be effectively isolated in a physically and chemically stable environment.

Of the halogens, the gold iodide complexes are the most stable in aqueous solutions. A series of experiments were performed to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of the leaching reaction between gold and iodide. Using a rotation disk technique, the effects of rotation speed, iodide and iodine concentration, temperature, pH and in the presence of different electrolytes were measured. Oxygen and hydrogen peroxide were also examined as oxidants in the iodide system. The first order reaction rate was found with respect to 13 and half order reaction rate with respect to 1-. The comparison of gold leaching between iodide and cyanide is also presented, in which a rate constant of about 2.6x10-9 mol/cm2? sec for 10-2 M I- and 5x10-3 M I2 was obtained. This value is close to that -for typical cyanidation. Cyclic voltammetry experiments were also performed to examine the electrochemical nature of the reaction which will be presented in part II of this study.

Caterpillar’s 797 327-t (360-st) mining truck is currently being tested at the company’s proving facilities. Mine evaluations began in the second quarter. The unit will be commerically available in North America in 2000 and worldwide in 2001. The new model is the largest of Caterpillar’s off high-way truck line. In addition, the company has replaced its 966F series II and 970 F wheel loaders with the966G and 972G models. 797 mining haul truck Caterpillar developed the 797 mining haul truck in response to mining companies seeking to reduce cost per ton in large-scale operations. The 797 is sized to work with loading shovels used in large mining operations. And Caterpillar will match the body design to the material being hauled, to optimize pay-loads.

Talc is used to remove stickies from pulp during paper recycling processes. It is well known that the interaction is controlled by the surface chemistry at the talc/water, sticky/water and talc/sticky interfaces. If the interfacial tensions are known, one can calculate the free energies of interaction and hence predict whether the stickies can be removed by talc. In the present work, the surface tensions of several different talc samples were determined using the acid/base theory. The information was then used to determine appropriate interfacial tensions, which in turn were used to determine the free energy of interaction between talc and stickies. It was found that the calculated free energies are much more negative than those between the stickies and other minerals such as calcium carbonate, bentonite clay and kaolin clays.

Indigenous people are nearly always affected when projects enter their territory. Crop and other asset compensation can help or undermine a project’s progress depending on the approach. When compensation is handled poorly, a technically viable project can get indefinitely entangled by local unrest. Stake holders associated with compensation issues include; the state, the indigenous people, non-governmental organizations, and the developer. Appreciation for the unique perspective of indigenous peoples and the influences affecting them can avert problems and prevent delays. A review of the compensation issues encountered in Ghana during its recent gold boom can assist in avoiding problems associated with handling poor and uneducated people.
