The worldwide budget for non fuel mineral exploration was expected to increase by 27 percent in 2003 from the 2002 budget, according to the Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The increase comes after five years of declining spending for mineral exploration. For the first time in several years, all regional exploration budget estimates for 2003 as defined by MEG would increase from similar 2002 estimates. However, MEG included 193 more companies in its 2003 survey than in 2002. As with previous MEG survey reports, estimates reflect anticipated expenditures rather than actual dollars spent. Caution, therefore, must be taken when comparing 2002 and2003 estimates or evaluating the magnitude of regional changes from year to year. Sample variations and currency exchange rates may influence year-to-year variations of MEG data. Even so, it is likely that the general climate of improved metal prices in 2003 encouraged companies that had previously left the mineral exploration sector or reduced their exploration activity to once again focus on minerals exploration or increase exploration activity and budgets.

The effect of molecular weight, charge and the presence of the cations Ca2+, Mg2+and K+ on the adsorption of carboxymethyl cellulose on pure talc obtained from Balmat, New York have been investigated. Higher adsorption densities were obtained in the presence ofCa2+ and Mg2+ ions than with K+ ions and higher ionic strength solutions resulted in higher adsorption densities. Changing the molecular weight did not influence the adsorption however increasing the charge (DS) of the polymers resulted in lower adsorption densities.

Management for mine construction and development differs from that needed for routine mine production and maintenance. An integrated approach to managing mine development projects must consider contract documents; management organization of a project; the project manager's role and the field supervisor's responsibility; and the use of scientific techniques for planning, scheduling, executing, and controlling projects. Professional project management encompasses the following: • Preparing contract documents that establish technical and financial schedules, and detail the responsibility for the physical work commitment. • Developing a project's organizational structure, to clearly define the roles of the project manager and the field supervisors. • Establishing project management and field supervisor relationships, to avoid ambiguity in assigning responsibility and to ensure desired project progress. • Using management science techniques, particularly networking techniques such as the critical path method for planning scheduling, executing, and controlling projects. Project Versus Production Management Project management differs from routine production management in the following ways: • Uniqueness: A project is unique. Production operations tend to be repetitive. The magnitude of one-time capital expenditures for many facets of mine development warrant special skills and attention. These professional project development skills must already be available by prior experience in the management team. • Personnel: In projects, personnel are usually assigned on a specialty basis and frequently change with the project activity. On the other hand, production personnel work together, more or less permanently. • Management Structure: In a project there may be several staff-line relationships that are not clearly defined and change with changing project activities. In a production situation, the lines of communication and authority are usually well defined. • Time Frame: A difference between project and routine production management is that project activities have comparatively less well defined durations and often tend to be relatively short-term. Production usually has both long-term and short-term plans and well defined long-term and shor-term goals. In project management, formal, critical, short-term reviews are frequently required. In production management, five year plans can be formally adjusted quarterly and annually. Short-term weekly or daily reviews can be informal. • Response to Delays: Delays in a development project may occur without anyone being immediately aware of their existence or suspecting the magnitude of consequence. In contrast, any delays in the production process can be easily identified from prior results comparison. Additionally, the response is quick, usually in a set routine. This can be traced back to the management structure and personnel. • Control Techniques: Measurements of project progress for control are not easily made due to the variety of activities that are carried on at the same time by different work groups. The yard-sticks of performance measurement for individual activities, let alone for the total project, are not easily established. However, due to the difficulty in detecting project delays, a workable control system is vitally important to a project manager. To apply a scientific project control technique such as "management by exception" requires specific planning and monitoring from the project manager for each activity in the project. Production and productivity are quick and effective yard-sticks of measuring performance in a routine operation. Control techniques required in production management usually revolve around these measures. Construction Contracts The construction contract is an important document that establishes contract scope, technical and financial details of the work, and achievement deadlines. It may also serve as the contract document to pay for work done and to verify field progress with planned progress. In practice, it is a good idea to develop a job-specific contract. This whole area is replete with legal precedence and procedures, and it is not the intent here to deal with the intricacies of establishing a contract document. But it is necessary to have an understanding of major contract types. Construction contracts are extremely important legal documents. They may vary in work specifications and enforcement of the provisions. Due to their nature, they must be composed with legal help and will take some time to compile. Even with all the precautions and provisions, it is not uncommon to find owner and contractor disagreeing. Therefore, it is important to include a way to resolve any difference quickly and to incorporate aspects of the contract as part of an overall management control tool for efficient project management.

To investigate the differences in the radial drag pick cutting performance in dry and saturated sandstone, a suite of linear rock cutting test was performed using linear rock cutting machine (LRCM). Experimental results of 50 data passes, incorporating 350 data cuts were used to compute cutting, normal and side forces required for determination of other performance related parameters. Although the forces required to cut the dry and saturated rock were in congruence for most of the spacing and depths of cut combinations; but the overall averaged cutting and normal forces for saturated rock cutting were found to be 9.9% and 9.4% respectively higher than the dry rock cutting. The increase in the overall averaged forces was attributed to strength variability of one of the saturated block affecting the overall forces. The side forces experienced a negligible drop in saturated rock cutting. An increase of 28% and 9% in the actual and nominal specific energy values respectively was also recorded when cutting saturated rock as compared to the dry rock cutting. The increase in saturated rock specific energy is attributed to production of large amount of fines and few large sized chips directly contributing towards increase in specific energy. The optimum s/d ratio for dry rock tests was found to lie between 6 and 8 whereas for saturated rock cuts this value lied between 5 and 9.

The ability of computers to create synthetic representations of the real world in virtual reality offers a number of opportunities to enhance training methods used in the mining industry. Unfortunately, the training effectiveness of virtual reality systems currently used in the mining industry has received only limited testing. Miner Simulation (MinerSIM), an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts in a virtual mine environment is in its evaluation process at the University of Missouri-Rolla Experimental Mine. This paper discusses evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system, which consists of experimental and control groups with control students learning via traditional lecture and text formats. Preliminary results from usability tests of the first part of MinerSim, which is an online tutorial on underground rock bolting, are presented.

INTRODUCTION The principal means for transporting men, supplies, and mined material in an underground or surface mine are rail systems, conveyor belt systems, or a combination of the two. Typically, large underground mines use rail haulage from the mining sections to the hoist, with conveyor belts being used within the sections. Small mines use conveyor belts in the mains and sub- mains as well as in the panels. The size and layout of surface mines also contribute to variations in the way these haulage systems are applied. The following sections address the typical problems confronting mining engineers in designing these haul- age systems. For rail, these include rail selection and turnout design, locomotive tractive-effort calculation, and motor sizing. Belt haulage calculations include belt width and speed specifications, tension and take- up requirements, idler spacings, and motor sizing. TRACK LAYOUTS Introduction The adequacy of mine track layouts is dependent upon such factors as rail weight (Table l), suitable ties, a well-drained roadbed, and properly designed curves, grades, and track alignment. As long as the installation conforms to the manufacturer's recommendations, good service can be expected from the rail system. Typically, mining-engineering calculations for rack layouts have dealt almost exclusively with the design of turnouts. As such, the following section provides the necessary information for computing the theoretically correct dimensions of turnouts. Turnout Design Fig. 1 shows a typical turnout with an identification of the component parts. Fig. 2 identifies the variables that are used to determine the turnout dimensions. The global bentonite industry is a dynamic market balancing a range of end uses with an ever growing number of bentonite producers. In addition, markets in developed countries are elevating the level of detail and transparency for materials reporting in programs, such as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restrictions of Chemicals (REACH) program in the European Union. Bentonite is impacted by programs of this nature. The majority of the bentonite products sold around the world are sodium bentonites. These sodium bentonites consist either of natural sodium bentonites, or naturally occurring bentonite dominated by divalent interlayer cations (Ca+2 andMg+2) subsequently exchanged with sodium cation. The latter variety is often called “sodium-activated“, or “soda-ash treated” bentonite. Once exchanged with sodium, these bentonites are often difficult to distinguish from natural sodium bentonites using common commercial testing protocols. Due to their similar colloidal and bulk chemical properties; the lack of test procedures designed specifically to identify this product feature; and the failure to completely or effectively explain their differences, sodium-activated bentonite is often considered to be identical to natural sodium bentonite in the industry. This article defines both general types of sodium bentonite and presents a technique that could serve the industry as a tool to confirm the variety of sodium bentonite in question. Specifically, geochemical properties such as carbon (C13/C12) and oxygen (O18/O16) isotopic ratios can distinguish activated, even slightly activated bentonites, from bentonites not introduced to additional sodium during manufacture.

"Native antimony metal is rare and antimony generally occurs together with gold, lead, copper and silver. There are more than 100 antimony minerals, although the sulfide mineral stibnite is the main economic mineral.Antimony enters the supply chain either as a result of mining (primary production) or recycling (secondary production). China has by far the largest antimony resources and is, as a result, the world’s center for antimony mine production. While China remains the leading primary producer, accounting for 69 percent (80.5 kt or 88,700 st) of the global 117.5 kt (129,000 st) in 2017, market consolidation and regulatory inspections across China leading to closures of facilities have caused a significant decrease in Chinese output from 115.8 kt (127,600 st) in 2015 (81 percent of global production).Tajikistan and Russia are the next largest producers of antimony after China, both ramping up production in recent years. Russia could significantly increase its supply of antimony if Polyus moves ahead with supplying 10-12 kt/a (11,000–13,200 stpy) of contained antimony from gold tailings. Australia and Bolivia are also significant mine producers outside China. The value of the different ores varies based on the metal content of the concentrates, with the most valuable gold-bearing ores sourced from Australia’s Costerfield Mine and the least valuable mercury-bearing ores sourced from the Anzob Mine in Tajikistan. On average, Bolivian and Russian ores trade at an intermediate value between those from Costerfield and Anzob. Nearly all of the rest-of-world production is exported to China, where the ores and concentrates are processed into antimony ingots and oxides.Antimony ingot production is not as widespread as is the case with antimony mine production, owing to the high levels of pollution that are associated with antimony smelting. It is for this reason that smelting has been largely confined to China and other Asian countries ,such as Vietnam and Myanmar, where environmental legislation has historically been less stringent. Tajikistan has become a growing producer of antimony ingot since 2014, coming from the commissioned metallurgical plant at the Anzob Mine.Antimony oxide production is undertaken on four continents with China being the biggest producer. There is also a considerable amount of oxide production in Europe (mainly Belgium and France), which relies on imported antimony metal feedstock, mostly from China.A new antimony project under construction by Strategic and Precious Metals Processing (SPMP) in Oman made progress in 2016 and 2017, and after producing first metal in April 2016 in test facilities, was set to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2018. Commissioning had been moved back to June 2018, with a potential ramp-up to 2-3 kt/a (2,200 to 3,300 stpy) of antimony metal by the end of 2018. SPMP is also reviewing producing antimony oxide as part of its flow sheet."

Estimated natural zeolite production worldwide during 2004 remained at about 3.6 Mt (4 million st), about the same as in 2003. China continues to be the largest producer of natural zeolites followed by Cuba, Germany, Japan and South Korea. This may be changing, however. Since 1988, zeolite production from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines and Thailand has increased rapidly. Most of the production is consumed in aqua culture. Global demand for seafood has exceeded the ability of the oceans to supply it without over fishing. Zeolite minerals remove ammonia compounds from the ponds in which fish and shrimp are grown. It is estimated that, in Thailand and Indonesia more than 55,000 farms produce260 kt (286,500 st) of shrimp. Therefore, as shrimp production increases, so does zeolite consumption.

Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite's physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter's production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia's producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin's 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide's unit value is much higher, kaolin's estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute's guidelines. From these definitions, associated kaolin grades used in particular grades of paper are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on how qualities desired in certain papers are achieved through the use of specialized kaolin grades. The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) is improving the sewer system in the Natomas area of Sacramento, CA. The Upper Northwest Interceptor (UNWI) system is an ongoing series of tunnel pipeline projects that will provide sewer conveyance for all residents of northeast Sacramento County to the New Natomas Pumping Station, located North of downtown Sacramento, also in the city of Sacramento limits. The New Natomas Pumping Station then carries wastewater flowsto the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Elk Grove via the existing Lower Northwest Interceptor. The Joint Venture of Traylor Brothers, inc. and J.F. Shea (TSJV) were awarded the UNWI 1&2 project in late September, 2007. The planned 5.8 km (3.65 mile) construction route for UNWI 1&2 begins at the New Natomas Pump Station and runs north along the East Drainage Canal to the begin-ning of UNWI 3&4 at Bridgecross Drive. UNWI 1&2 includes approximately 5.8 km (19,240 feet) of 3.65 m (144 inch) inside diameter pipe using Earth Pressure Balance Tunneling Methods. The project also includes 16.76 m (55 feet) of 3.04 m (120-inch) diameter interceptor pipeline, twenty three access manholes spaced approximately 305 m (1,000 feet) apart along the alignment, a 2.13 m (84-inch) by 3.65 m (144-inch) transition structure, a 3.65 m (144-inch) by 3.04 m (120-inch) transition structure, and the connection of three existing sanitary sewer lines to the interceptor.

The mining industry is beginning to implement lithiumion batteries (LIBs) to power mine utility vehicles (MUVs) and rubber-tired mantrips (RTMs). However, the ability of LIBs to withstand the harsh conditions for these applications has not been rigorously evaluated. Concerns with the use of LIBs in the mining environment will be discussed including the effects of mechanical shock and vibration, temperature extremes, and moisture exposure. This paper will discuss adverse effects of the mining environment on LIBs and provide an overview of scientific gaps associated with the environmental susceptibility of LIBs used on MUVs and RTMs.

By oxidizing the pyrite matrix through biological leaching of precious metals ores or concentrates, better than 90% recovery of gold and silver is achieved. The paper develops three precipitation processes that eliminates arsenic and all other toxic elements in the resulting liquor after the biological reactors. In addition, the precipitates are highly crystalline and resist resolubilization. The latter must be tested for at least six months by EPA test procedures. The three systems are temperature (must be at least 120°C or higher) lime or limestone. A continuous pilot plant was employed for all three systems and complete recommendations are given to optimize Fe/As molar ratio, reaction kinetics (detention time) pH, temperature, wt % feed solids as well as resultant reagent consumption based upon continuous operation.

Novel dewatering aids were tested on various coal samples from the U.S. and Canada in laboratory and pilot-scale filtration experiments. The reagents substantially improved the dewatering kinetics and reduced the cake moistures. The cake moistures were typically reduced from 20-30% by weight to 8-14% range in vacuum filtration. When the reagents were used in conjunction with a pressure filter, higher degrees of moisture reductions were achieved. In the present work, the novel dewatering aids were tested using different types of pilot-scale vacuum filters. The results were consistent with those obtained in laboratory experiments.

Asbestos, an extremely useful natural resource, has been studied extensively mineralogically and for industrial application. Its extraction from ores has been greatly improved with respect to safety in the work place. In spite of that, there is a decisive effort in many countries to ban its use on the grounds that it is a toxic substance. This action resulting in drastic decrease in production and the possibility of destroying the industry. The chelation of asbestos with organic dyes seems to be a promising way to abate its toxicity. Dyeing can be done when the fibers are slurred in water at ambient conditions in the same way as textile fibers.

INTRODUCTION The slurry shield method was developed in Japan in 1963 and its experimental tunnelling work was performed in 1965. Although the history of this method is short compared with the conventional shield method in Japan, many companies such as Tekken Construction, Okumura Gumi, Nishimatsu Kensetsu, etc. are engaged at present in developing their own unique system of the slurry shield method. The ground of Japan is generally pervaded with ground water and a large number of districts are covered with soft ground, which is composed of fine sand, silt and clay, etc. Therefore, the conventional shield method has always used compressed air with various kinds of auxiliary methods. However, with this method there have been experienced numerous troubles such as ground settlements, lowering of ground water, oxygen shortage within the tunnel, and so forth. The slurry shield method has been developed with the above background. In recent years remarkable progress has been made from the engineering viewpoint in applying this method to driving various kinds of tunnels such as road tunnels, subways, water supply and sewer tunnels, and other tunnels. Subsidence from underground coal mining alters surface water discharge and availability. The magnitude and areal extent of these impacts are dependent on many factors, including the amount of subsidence, topography, geology, climate, surface water - ground water interactions, and fractures in the overburden. These alterations may have positive and/or negative impacts. One of the most significant surface water impacts occurred in July 1957 near West Pittston, Pennsylvania. Subsidence in the Knox Mine under the Coxton Yards of the Lehigh Valley Railroad allowed pan of the discharge in the Susquehanna River to flow into the mine and create a crater 200 feet in diameter and 300 feet deep. Fourteen railroad gondola cars fell into the hole which was eventually filled with rock, sand, and gravel. Other surface water impacts from subsidence may include the loss of water to the ground water system, the gaining of water from the ground water system, the creation of flooded subsidence troughs, the increasing of impoundment storage capacity, the relocation of water sources (springs), and the alteration of surface drainage patterns.

On Nov 1, 2007 House Resolution 2262 ? The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007 ? was passed by the U.S. House by a vote of 244-166. HR-2262, among other things, would impose a 4-per-cent royalty on existing mines with commercial production and an 8-percent gross royalty on all new claims. Not surprisingly, this possible new law was one of the hottest topics of discussion at the Northwest Mining Association?s conference that this year returned to Spokane, WA for its 113th annual meeting on Dec. 3-7. More than 1,800 delegates attended the conference that was held under the banner theme of ?Mining ?. For today and tomorrow.? Northwest Mining Association executive director Laura Skaer was one of many speakers during the three-day conference to respond to the threat to the industry posed by HR-2262 with a presentation titled ?Potential changes to the 1872 Mining Law.? In the presentation that she first unveiled at the Alaska Miners Association?s convention and trade show on Nov. 8, Skaer laid out a comprehensive list of problems with HR-2262. In addition to the association?s obvious concerns about the proposed royalty, Skaer noted that the bill includes a mine veto provision that would allow the Secretary of the Interior the authority to deny an operations permit to a project if the secretary determines that the operation would cause undue degradation to public lands and resources. Potential massive withdrawals from mineral entry are also included in HR-2262. Among the lands that could be off limits to miners under HR-2262 are wilderness study areas, areas of environmental concern and 23.6 hm2 (58.5 million acres) identified as Roadless Rule. States, political subdivisions and Indian Tribes would also have more authority to withdraw lands, she said. To combat the proposed changes, Skaer made 10 trips to Washington D.C. on behalf of NWMA members in 2007. In her presentation at the annual meeting, she also objected to provisions that include no life-of-mine permits and uncertain permit renewals and new and duplicative environmental standards that she said are vague, ambiguous and inconsistent with current federal and state environmental laws. Debra W. Struhsacker, an environmental permitting and government relations consultant, also spoke on the issue of HR-2262 with a presentation titled ?The House mining law bill ? Rip van Winkle is back ? and he?s meaner than ever.?

No major changes took place in the salt industry during 2004. No new uses of salt appeared and only localized supply disruptions occurred. Many salt producers reported slightly increased salt sales and profits for the year. In the United States, about half of the salt supply is produced as brine, by solution mining, and is used by the chemicals industry. One-third of U.S. salt is produced as rock salt by 14 underground mines. The remaining two production techniques, each with less than 10 percent of the total tonnage, are vacuum-pan-evaporation for refined, food-grade salt, and solar pond crystallized salt.

Surface properties of minerals could be modified selectively and very specifically by adsorption -desorption (dissolution) processes. This requires a monitoring and control of the outermost surface layer at a molecular and atomic level. The nature and structure of self-assembled submonolayers and monolayers at the interface of minerals were studied by infrared reflection spectroscopy. The external reflection spectra of the adsorbed monolayers on any type of minerals: transparent, opaque or non-transparent, recorded at different angles of incidence and for two polarizations are an excellent source of information about the nature and surface distribution of the adsorbed species. The developed method allows to obtain detailed information at a molecular level about the adsorbed surface species. By combination of the simulated and experimental data, the qualitative description of the adsorbed species as well as quantitative evaluation of orientation and the thickness of the adsorption layers were obtained. This fundamental knowledge allows to determine the mechanisms of surface phenomena which govern selective separations. Examples of different surfactant - mineral systems and industrial applications will be discussed.
