Surface Plasmon Resonance spectroscopy (SPR), combined with cyclovoltammetry, has been successfully used to study the interactions between ethyl xanthate, heptyl xanthate, dithiophosphate and propyl trithiocarbonate flotation collectors and a gold surface. Large, easily measurable responses have been obtained in the potential areas where the thiol collectors are known to interact with gold. The four collector types lead to differing SPR maximum values, with longer alkyl chains resulting in higher SPR responses, and the trithiocarbonate leading to the highest response values. The SPR responses differ considerably from the current density response at very anodic and cathodic potentials. There are indications that thiols might still be adsorbed at potentials as low as -300 mV (vs SHE). The South African mining industry is at present planning to extract orebodies at depths of up to 4 km. To do this cost effectively and, at the same time, ensure safe working conditions for mining, the personnel will require both the development of new strategies and the implementation of current rock-engineering technological developments on a wide scale. This paper covers most of the technological developments likely to be required for mining at very high stresses, but it is clear that improved regional support systems will need to be developed to ensure defective stability of the rockmass during mining operations. Similarly, it is clear that improved strategies for mining in large-scale geologically disturbed areas, where slip on faults or dykes can result in wide-spread rockburst damage, will have to be addressed

The kinetics of adsorption of gold di-cyanide onto activated carbon has been investigated extensively over the past two decades. These studies have demonstrated that both film and intra-particle mass transfer affect the kinetics. The dominant mechanism of intra-particle mass transfer has not yet been identified. In the work described, surface diffusion and pore diffusion are considered as possible rate-determining mechanisms of intra-particle mass transfer. Mathematical models are described that incorporate film mass transfer and the respective intra-particle mass transfer mechanism with equilibrium described by a Freundlich isotherm. Rate constants of film mass transfer and pore or surface diffusivities were estimated by the fitting of the respective models to experimental carbon adsorption data. The estimated pore diffusivities, after they had been corrected for the porosity and tortuosity of the carbon, were found in most instances to be higher than the molecular diffusivity of dilute gold di-cyanide in aqueous solution. This situation is not physically viable. The surface diffusion mechanism acting in parallel with the pore-diffusion mechanism is thus responsible for the intra-particle transportation of most of the gold.

An electrochemical technique based on the solid oxide galvanic cel Mo / Mo + MoO2/ ZrO2-MgO / Fe + (FexO)slag + Ag / Fe was used in a determination of FexO activities in liquid slag systems. The emf measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and microprobe analysis of the cross-sections of the electrolyte tubes used in direct contact with the slag melts indicated that slag attack did not affect the open-circuit emf values during normal cell operation, The reliability of the cell was confirmed by the good agreement between the standard free energy of formation of liquid Fep obtained in the present study and those reported in the literature, The FexO activities were determined in FexO -CaO and FexO-SiO2 slags at 1673 K, and are in good agreement with those measured by the conventional gas-equilibrium technique. The experimental technique was successfully extended to the measurement of Fe2O activities in the complex slags that are used for the external desilliconization of the hot metal product of the blast furnace.

The maximum oxygen intakes of samples of about 30 Bantu, weighing less than 50 kg from different tribal groups (Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho and Shangaan) were measured on a treadmill. The mean maximum oxygen intake of the 164 men was 2,12 litresjmin and only 18 men (11 per cent of the sample) had maximum oxygen intakes of 2,5 litres/min or above (the minimum requirement for such tasks as shovelling rocks and tramming it). The samples of the different tribes differ in age, but when the age effect is taken into account then there were no significant differences between tribes in maximum oxygen intakes. An incidental finding was that both age and body weight correlated significantly with the maximum oxygen intakes of these underweight subjects. Not one of the subjects who weighed less than 45 kg or who was older than 40 years had maximum oxygen intakes high enough to permit their being able to do strenuous work underground. It is clear therefore that Bantu who weigh less than 45 kg or are older than 40 years should not be employed on such strenuous tasks as shovelling rock and tramming it.

The improved design of support systems and stoping strategies when changes in depth, stratigraphy, or mine layouts are considered must rely on the designer's fundamental understanding of the deformation mechanisms adjacent to underground openings so that he can extrapolate and predict expected mining conditions. This paper presents a numerical approach to the modeling of the growth and interaction of mining-induced fractures near the edges of deep tabular excavations in brittle rock. Fractures are represented by displacement-discontinuity elements that are allowed to propagate according to prescribed growth rules. This procedure is justified by the reproduction of several features observed in laboratory simulations of fracturing around openings in blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression. An attempt is then made to explain some of the attributes of the fracture zone surrounding tabular stopes. Particular questions of interest are the sequence in which fractures form and are mobilized in front of the mining face, the effect of parting planes parallel to the plane of the excavation, and the distribution of stress parallel to the hangingwall and footwall.

Suggested thermal stress limits for safe physiological strain in underground environments by J. M. STEW ART M.Sc. (Eng) (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) and C. H. WYNDHAM M.B., D.Sc. (Land) (Fellow) A comparison of safe temperature limits, based on Mitchell and Whillier's equations for specific cooling power (SCP), with similar limits determined experimentally shows the SCP-based limits to be unnecessarily conservative. It is argued that, while a small part of this conservatism may be attributed to an erroneous extrapolation of the heat transfer dependence on wind speed, the major part is probably due to the use of too Iowa limiting mean skin temperature in the calculation of SCP. A combination of Mitche/l's basic data with results available in the literature permits the derivation of modified heat transfer equations based on data that fully cover the range of wind speeds of interest. These equations, using a mean skin temperature of 36°C as the basis for the calculation of safe temperature limits, are then shown to agree favourably with those determined empirically. Furthermore, values of SCP based on these equations are shown to correlate reasonably well with wet kata readings, giving positive support to the wet kata thermometer as a heat stress meter.

(Visitor) Picklers and galvanizers in and around Johannesburg are encountering an ever-increasing problem in disposing of spent liquors from their hydrochloric acid pickling baths. Particularly troublesome is the zinc-contaminated liquor that is produced as a result of the clean-up of rejects from the galvanizing operation. Because of the volatility of zinc chloride. this liquor presents difficulties when processed in a conventional pyrohydrolysis acid-recovery unit. The paper describes the Metsep Process. developed by the National Institute for Metallurgy and Woodall-Duckham S.A. (Pty) Ltd. which involves the use of continuous ion exchange for the separation of the zinc from the pickle liquor. and the use of liquid-liquid extraction for the conversion of zinc chloride eluate to salable zinc sulphate. A description of laboratory and pilot-plant tests is given. and the approach used in the design of a full-scale continuous- ionexchange plant is outlined.

First of al, it should be emphasized that the object of the paper is not to address the validity of ERR as a tool for the assessment of seismic events or rockbursts, but to determine an in situ modulus for the rockmass with the aid of backfil measurements. In the fourteen years that Rössing Uranium Limited has been in production, the metallurgical operations and controls on the leaching plant have evolved through four basic stages. Initially, the emphasis was placed on the achievement of consistent plant operation by overcoming severe startup difficulties. The second stage involved the attainment of the design operating targets, and also the commissioning of the ferric-leaching reactors in order to achieve a ferric ion concentration of more than 3,0 g/l. Improvements in control then became the priority, with the emphasis on consistently achieving the target concentrations of ferric ions, total iron, and terminal acidity. The latest phase has concentrated on the optimization of costs by means of adjustments to the historically established operating parameters in order to achieve large savings on consumables while maintaining the leaching efficiencies. Apart from the obvious incentive of reducing costs in an inflationary economy and a depressed uranium market, impetus for this work was given by a change in the type of ore from the open pit, which has the effect of reducing the extraction efficiency while increasing the consumption of consumable materials. These problems and their solutions are discussed in detail, and the importance to cost-effective optimization of an accurate, up-to-date cost-reporting structure is stressed.

The mechanization of haulage drilling in the gold mines of Anglo American Corporation by J. w. WILSON, Ph. D., C.Eng., M.AIME, F.!.Min.E., F.I.M.M. (Fellow), and J. G. TAYLOR, A.C.S.M., C.Eng., M.!.M.M. (Visitor) Some one-thousand kilometres of tunnels are mined annually in the gold mines of South Africa. Until two years ago, mechanized drilling on South African gold mines was not an economic proposition because of the availability of inexpensive labour and the fact that mechanized equipment developed for other mining markets could not perform satisfactorily in the tough, abrasive quartzites of theWitwatersrand System. A project team from the Technical Development Services Organisation of the Anglo American Corporation, in collaboration with various manufac turers of drill rigs and drill steel, has been concerned with the development of suitable equipment for mechanized main-haulage drilling. After two-and-a-half years of extensive testing and development of drifters, drill steels, and bits, many of the problems encountered have been sotved, and gradually jumbos mounting pneumatically and hydraulically powered drifters are being phased into production on various gold mines of the Group. A description of the development work is given, and actual operating results are recorded, together with details of the drilling and blasting techniques used.

This paper reviews the major deposits of lower-grade chromite in the world, and a wide variety of methods used for the recovery of chromium from them. Gangue materials in more coarsely sized ores can be separated by gravity means, whereas flotation techniques are required for finer-grained materials. However, unless there is considerable Iron In the ores, physical means cannot increase the Cr/Fe ratios. Chemical techniques such as hydrometallurgical methods, chlorination, roasting and leaching, and smelting are required for this purpose. A greater understanding of the physical properties of chromites and the chemical reactions that take place in the recovery operations is required before. the recoveries from lower-grade chromites can be maximized. More efficient recovery operations can be realized If It can be shown definitively that the reduction of chromites occurs via either a gas-solld or solid-solid mechanism, for example. The effects of specific impurities on the chromite reduction reactions need to be better understood, as do reagent and pH control in the flotation of chromite.

The effects of the mining of deep-level tabular reefs are usually evaluated by use of continuum, elastic mining simulation analyses. This paper gives the results obtained from a series of analyses in which stopes of limited span are considered to be excavated in a non-linearly non-elastic, jointed and fractured rockmass. In particular, the theoretical influence of soft backfill in these conditions is evaluated. It is shown that the stress distribution and behaviour of the rockmass, alternately taken as an intact-elastic and as a fractured non-elastic medium, are completely different. The relevance of the energy-release rate commonly calculated in mining-simulation analyses, and the efficacy of its correlation with seismicity and the associated rockbursts, are reviewed. In deep-level mining operations, it is not practically feasible to obviate releases of seismic energy. The fact of their occurrence should therefore be accepted and, rather than considering the reduction of energy release as the primary objective, efforts should be concentrated on minimizing the effects of such release. Analytical results are given to demonstrate that this approach is not only correct, but also the only feasible solution to the rockburst-seismicity problem in deep mines.

The techniques used in this study of the non-oxidative dissolution rates of high- and Iow-grade nickel mattes in hydrochloric acid involved leaching and the use of a rotating ring-disc electrode. It was found that the rate of metal dissolution depends on the potential at which the matte dissolves, a maximum rate of dissolution being observed at -0,2 V to 0,3 V (relative to a saturated calomel electrode). The results are comparable with those obtained in work on the dissolution of synthetic nickel and iron sulphides. The adverse effect of excess sulphur on the rate of nonoxidative dissolution is explained in terms of the mixed potential of the reaction. The leaching studies showed the feasibility of processing a high-grade nickel matte by non-oxidative dissolution, and indicate that maximum rates can be obtained in the presence of fairly Iow concentrations of oxidant. A relative selective dissolution of iron can be obtained from the Iow-grade matte under reducing conditions, thus resulting in a significant upgrading of this material. An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction - primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

The flotation behaviour of phoscorite from the Phosphate Development Corporation was measured in a pilot plant, the flotation cells in the plant being varied in configuration so as to operate with or without circulating loads. The ore was floated in a batch cell so that the parameters for a kinetic model could be estimated, and these parameters were then used in a flotation-plant simulator, which is based on the kinetic model, in the prediction of the performance of a pilot flotation plant operating on phoscorite. The simulator predictions compare well with the measured performance of the ore in the pilot plant, but the comparison shows that the kinetic model is not completely adequate for the prediction of performance in continuous flotation plants. The model is weakest in its ability to model the behaviour of the froth phase. The flotation behaviour of the ore could be adequately described when it was assumed that the apatite and gangue each consist of floatable and unfloatable components. The effect of particle size on the specific flotation-rate constant of apatite was found to have a maximum at 85 µm and to fall to zero at 400 µm that for the gangue had a maximum at 50 µm and was zero at 350 µm.

Caving is the lowest cost underground mining method provided that the draw point spacing, draw point size, and ore-handling facilities are designed to suit the caved material, and that the draw point horizon can be maintained for the life of the draw. In the near future, several open-pit mines that produce more than 50 kt per day will have to examine the feasibility of converting to low-cost, large-scale underground operations. Several other large scale, low-grade underground operations will experience major changes in their mining environments as large dropdowns are implemented These changes demand a more realistic approach to mine planning than in the past, where existing operations have been projected to increased depths with little consideration of the change in mining environment that will occur. As economics force the consideration of underground mining of large, competent ore bodies by low-cost methods, the role of cave mining will have to be defined In the past, caving was generally considered for rockmasses that cave and fragment readily. The ability to define cavability and fragmentation, the availability of large, robust load-haul-dump units, a better understanding of draw-control requirements, improved drilling equipment for secondary blasting, and reliable cost data have shown that competent orebodies with coarse fragmentation can be exploited by cave mining at a much lower cost than by drill-and blast methods.

The effect of microstructure on the deformation and fracture properties of 3CR12 steel was investigated at different strain rates in the temperature range -196 to 200°C. The yield stress of the as-received steel, showing a banded dual-phase microstructure, was much lower than that of the flake-like dual-phase microstructure produced by heat treatment. The heat treatment also resulted in an increase in the volume fraction of martensite. The fracture toughness of the as-received 3CR12, on the other hand, was significantly higher than that of the heat-treated material. These changes in both yield stress and fracture toughness were attributed to the effect of microstructural parameters on the constraints imposed on the deformation and subsequent failure of the ferritic phase in the as received and heat-treated steels. The exceptionally low resistance to crack extension in a plane parallel to the roiling plane of the as-received material was ascribed to the delamination process, which is typical for controlled-rolled steels. The yield stress and fracture toughness were found to depend on temperature and strain rate. The appearances of the fracture surfaces were found to be consistent with the mechanical properties.

Project evaluation is completed through individual studies covering technical and financial aspects of the mine to market. These studies are completed at various levels of detail depending on where the project evaluation is in the project's life cycle. The competency of the studies varies in relation to the quality of data, level of the skills employed, control, management and reporting structure. The focus of this paper is managing elements of the study, looking at the cost of opportunity to influence the project, against the value added. Selection of the study manager and study teams is central to getting an integrated project evaluation addressing the correct issues completed on time. Retention of key personnel can reduce rework which, in turn, can reduce time and cost impacts. It is important to have a work breakdown structure at the outset so that the study teams have a common numbering and naming system that will integrate areas, equipment, budgets estimates and accounts. Having set up the evaluation groups and provided training in the study procedures, understanding the scope and schedule are vital elements in producing a project evaluation that addresses the opportunities and the risks of the final project. Arriving at an accurate capital budget requires integration of the research controlled through common systems. Project evaluation process must also address how the project is to be delivered.
