"Geometallurgy aims to improve mining project value by predicting the impact that ore and waste characteristics will have on mining and metallurgical processes. This requires integration of rich spatial models of orebody characteristics with validated process response models. These models have, until recently, been constrained by the spatial coverage and representativity of relevant data and the ability to validate predictions made.The revolution in the diversity and volume of data and computational power that is now becoming available for integrated geoscientific modelling of orebodies, and stochastic simulation of mining and mineral processes is accelerating. By embracing emergent integrated data analysis and simulation techniques, geoscientists and engineers can lead a transformation in the way the mining value chain, from orebody to recovery, can be conceived, evaluated, and operated by using the geometallurgical paradigm.This paper describes a methodology that is applied to an existing diamond operation. Analysis of spatial and process data is used to build an integrated geometallurgical value chain model (IGVCM). This IGVCM is used to generate geometallurgical options and evaluate their potential outcomes. The model facilitates the use of flexible, highly configurable, and potentially automated intelligent approaches to evaluate mining and mineral process configuration, and results in more robust design outcomes. The approach described here, and its successful implementation has potential to deliver step-changes in value. IntroductionGeometallurgy aims to identify treatability risks – and opportunities – that arise from the interaction of orebody characteristics with mining and treatment. Improved understanding of the rock/process relationships allows project planners and production teams to predict performance, identify potential shortfalls, and thus enable the proactive creation and evaluation of strategies to mitigate these risks. These advanced insights also create opportunities for continually improving operational performance through dynamically adapting and improving the process response to the changing properties of the ore (Figure 1)."

"Electron microbeam analysis of metallurgical samples covers a broad field and has applications in the areas of minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, physical metallurgy and corrosion.Some idea of the possibilities of microbeam techniques can be illustrated by examining the following example of a run of mine gold ore sample. Milling and bulk chemical analysis of the ore will provide major and minor element analysis as well as the gold grade. More detailed chemistlY can also reveal the presence of trace elements that may be advantageous or deleterious to downstream processing. Electron microbeam analysis can provide additional information in the form of - size, liberation, association and composition of the gold, the percentage of refractory gold, the size, liberation, association and composition of enclosing sulphide or arsenide phases and the levels and association of the trace elements that may affect processing. In most cases electron microbeam analysis compliments bulk chemistry, and does not replace it. Both techniques should be used in parallel for maximum effect.This paper touches on the origin and history of electron microbeam techniques, as well as the theory behind microbeam analysis and processing. The more common types of instruments and their applications will also be dealt with briefly - more details on, and examples of, the applications and choice of technique will be covered in the presentation.Mosely first discovered, in 1913, that the frequency of emitted X-radiation excited by an electron beam is a function of the atomic number of the analysed element. This discovery led to the development of spectrochemical analysis. The forerunners of the electron microanalysers of today, however, were only invented during the nineteen fifties. The electron microprobe was developed in parallel by Castaing and Guinier in France and by Borovski in Russia, but Castaing's design was the basis of modern microanalysers. The initial area of analysis was brought down from over 1 mm2 to less than 2 µm, as it is today. In 1956 Cosslett and Duncumb invented the scanning electron microprobe, where a beam of electrons could be scanned across an area of a sample. This, in turn, led to the development of the electron microprobe with both scanning and point analysis capabilities that we know today.Essentially, all electron microbeam instruments operate by the production of a beam of electrons from a filament in a vacuum (i.e. an electron gun). The electron beam leaves the gun and is accelerated and focused by a series of electromagnetic lenses while passing down an evacuated column. The electrons eventually strike the surface of the sample to be analysed and may travel through a thin sample (transmitted electron microscopy) or react with a thicker sample to produce several reflected kinds of radiation."

Potential errors in XRF analysis are discussed and investigated with specific reference to the analysis of ilmenite samples. A selection of ilmenite samples was chosen and prepared using two XRF preparation techniques: pressed powder pellet and unroasted fusion bead. The merits of the two methods have been discussed in this paper for ilmenite analysis by XRF. Recommendations have been made regarding the use of pressed powder pellets especially with regard to the mineralogical effects that were evidenced during this investigation. The fusion bead technique was found to be far more accurate and able to meet short turnaround requirements provided the calibration methodology used is specific to the grade of samples analyzed.

The paper explains the main effects of input leaching parameters, such as addition of a reducing agent, acidity, agitation, temperature, and leaching system potential, in relation to observed and predicted yields of sought-after cobalt. An artificial neural network coupled with graphical probability networks was developed wherein the abovementioned input parameters were used to predict the percentage of dissolved cobalt. Furthermore, similarities and differences between the Bayesian and neural network approaches in terms of their key outcomes are compared with respect to study of the dissolution of cobalt in sulfuric acid. Key results indicate that there is a need to use neural network results to predict conditions for dissolution of cobalt, while using Bayesian network to explain inferences about conditions of the input parameters, thereby achieving realistic predictions.

Methods for treating and processing refractory gold ores are well established. However, what is less well understood is how the formation of the gold-bearing deposits affects gold processing and extraction. In order to evaluate the effect of ore genesis on gold extraction a number of South African gold deposits were studied. These included complex Pilgrim’s Rest samples as well as refractory Fairview, Barbrook, and Consolidated Murchison samples. We found the refractory nature of gold ores is controlled by a limited number of well-understood mineralogical factors. Solid solution gold is linked to low temperature and pressure conditions in fine-grained sedimentary lithologies, while reactive pyrrhotite can form from hydrothermal fluids associated with mafic magmatic rocks. These formational controls can be used to identify and avoid complex deposits at a desktop study phase, or address and reduce complications further along the pipeline using early mineralogical studies.

This paper develops the themes explained at the previous SAIMM Platinum conference by Whittle and Burks1. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long- term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can potentially be increased by 5-35 per cent or more, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. The case studies presented include: ? An existing operation with multiple open pits and PGM concentrators linked to offsite downstream processing facilities, and with infrastructure constraints for which the scheduling of current operations and the potential for expansion were investigated ? An existing operation with an integrated portfolio of mines, concentrators, smelter and refinery, for which the various possible sources of ore for processing were prioritized to match the downstream process plant constraints and the product markets ? An underground operation in Zimbabwe for which the optimum mining width was calculated and expansion plans were evaluated ? An underground mine with many separate mining sections, for which a revised schedule was developed aiming to keep the shaft system and processing plant at capacity with the highest net value material available at any time throughout the life of mine. In the concluding section of the paper, a few brief notes are included suggesting how the strategic recommendations from enterprise optimization studies may be implemented by the Owner?s team.

The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect of high-temperature heat treatment on the electrical resistivity of charcoal. Samples of two different wood types (eucalyptus and black wattle) were pyrolised in a retort at a temperature of 700°C and the resulting charcoals heat-treated in an induction furnace at temperatures from 800°C to 1800°C and residence times from 60 to 120 minutes. After cooling, the resistivities of the samples were measured at room temperature using the four-point probe technique. It was found that as the heat treatment temperature increased the electrical resistivity of the charcoal decreased, approaching an asymptotic value at higher temperatures. Longer residence times decreased the resistivity, but this effect was not pronounced.

"Since 1964, Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd., has been developing and using production scheduling methods for optimizing its metallurgical operations in the short term (up to one year). Medium-range metallurgical planning has been possible only by successive evaluations of a single-year L.P. A modified version of Rosenbrock's direct search technique has now been developed to allow multi-year optimization of both mining and metallurgy for medium-range planning. The modifications to the search technique have produced a marked increase in computational efffciency for this heavily constrained problem in many variables and the system is a usable planning tool, given a reasonably powerful computer. The plans are 'optimum' in the sense that they yield the maximum present value of the operations.Each of the resulting five-yearly mine plans forms the basis for further detailed metallurgical evaluation by the established production scheduling system."

Sulfide-type tin deposits in Russia are characterised by the complex mineral composition of ores and dump products of their processing. Tin-sulfide ores contain industrial quantities of copper, lead, zinc, tungsten, silver, rare and trace elements (indium, scandium, etc.). In addition, the ores are characterised by uneven dissemination of sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, etc.) and tin minerals (cassiterite, stannine, etc.). X-ray phase and spectral analysis, scanning electronic microscopy (SEAM), laser SIM and AFM microscopy helped to identify the selective fixing of sodium dibutyl dithiocarbamate (DBDTC) on chalcopyrite and galena, as well as the tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) and IM-50 on cassiterite. For the first time, collectors and flocculants of slurry fractions of silver and tin, thermomorphic polymers TMPF were used to isolate more than 80% silver from the tin tailings of the Solnechny mine into a copper-silver rough concentrate. It has been established that preliminary ultrasonic treatment and desliming according to the 0.02 mm class removes up to 20% of sludge material, which impairs the process of gravity separation. The combined flotation-gravity scheme using new reagent compositions helped to obtain tin concentrate with a tin content of 5.42%, which meets the requirements for further metallurgical processing (at least 5%). The main mineral components of the so-called heavy sands (or black sand) are the titanium, zirconium and iron-bearing minerals, rutile, zircon and illmenite, accompanied by various minor and trace amounts of silicates or phosphates, often present together with the rare earth elements. The investigated samples originated from Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) in South Africa, which is jointly owned by BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, the largest titanium slag producer in the world. The present study focused on the characteristics of samples originating from various points in the separation plant. The heavy-mineral fractions and concentrates of a representative suite of samples were investigated using various analytical techniques to establish the differences in morphological and elemental compositions at the different points in the plant. These techniques included: reflected light microscopy, micro-raman spectrometry (MRS), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM/EDX) and structural and chemical analyser (SCA). All samples comprised a heterogeneous population of zircon and rutile grains with diverse physico-chemical properties, expressed by large differences in colour and trace element chemistry of single grains. The elemental composition proved the presence of the rare earth elements that appeared to coexist with both Ti and Zr minerals. The percentage of grains hosting inclusions, such as anatase, monazite, quartz, spessartine, augite, epidote and actinolite, varied for each sample and could be uniquely characterized by Raman investigations. A simple mineralogical regression model is described, which was devised in order to help the flotation plant cope with rapidly changing headgrades and feed mineralogy. Minerals in the feed were determined by means of quantitative X-ray diffraction and compared with plant performance parameters and flotation reagent consumption rates, using regression analysis. A mineralogical regression model for predicting recovery served to motivate flotation plant personnel and also set standards whereby flotation performance could be measured. The reagent consumption model indicated in which direction any or all of five flotation consumption rates should be altered. All practically measurable parameters, even those showing poor or no correlation, were included in the model, provision being made for the continuous update of a batch of data of 30 lines. Compared with the method of multiple linear regressions, the r2 is poorer at 0,41 (versus 0,50), but the mean standard error of estimate for both methods is identical at ± 6,6 units. The regression model is simpler than the method of multiple linear regressions, and although the accuracy of prediction is not high (41%), the mineralogical regression model proved to be successful in practice. Flotation efficiency, as measured by the mean ratio of head to tails grade, for the 9 month period after the mineralogical regression model was implemented on an hourly basis, improved from 2,8 to 3,2, which is equivalent to an improvement in average flotation recovery of 5% relative.

Chalcopyrite represents the most important copper resource and is currently mainly exploited using pyrometallurgy. Bioleaching is an environmental-friendly and economic alternative to conventional mineral processing technologies. The technical feasibility of stirred tank reactor bioleaching of copper ore concentrates using acidophilic iron-/sulfur-oxidising bacteria is proven, however, often incomplete due to inefficient chalcopyrite dissolution. A decoupling of bacterial growth from bioleaching activity in one bioreactor by adjusting appropriate temperatures for both process steps allows for almost complete chalcopyrite dissolution. Separation of copper and recovery of other metals from the PLS was possible by implementation of different biological and chemical techniques. The Ferredox process has been proposed to treat limonitic laterite ores for cobalt and nickel recovery by means of anaerobic reductive dissolution with autotrophic, acidophilic bacteria. As a modification, aerobic reductive dissolution of laterites with acidophilic bacteria has shown economic and environmental advantages over anaerobic reductive dissolution. The reductive bioleaching technology has the potential to increase metal recovery in existing mines, and transform unexploited ores and limonite stockpiles into valuable resources. "A downward trend in tyre life on haul trucks at an open pit iron ore mine prompted an investigation into the current tyre management strategy in order to improve tyre life. ‘Best practice’ was compared to the current tyre management strategy at the mine to determine aspects that could be improved. Aspects that showed significant room for improvement included employee tyre awareness, tyre pressure maintenance, and road conditions. For each of these aspects a plausible alternative was suggested.A new tyre management strategy was formulated as a step-by-step guide on how to implement the proposed changes. Each step introduces new initiatives but at the same time builds on the previous step’s success. A sensitivity analyses was performed to determine the impact of the proposed changes, with the variables being the reduction in the percentage of premature tyre failure, and the reduction of the site wear rate.The ‘most likely’ scenario showed an increase in tyre life of 41% for the Komatsu 730 trucks and 105% for the CAT 777 trucks if the entire tyre management model is implemented. This would result in a possible annual saving related to tyre usage of R9.2 million. OverviewThe study focused on the tyre life on the main haul fleet at an open pit iron ore mine. The haul fleet consisted of 17 Komatsu 730 (180 t) haul trucks and 12 CAT 777 (90 t) haul trucks.The haulage operation consists entirely of tyre-based haul trucks. Five per cent of the total mining budget is related to tyre costs. Since 2012 there has been a steady decrease in tyre life as measured in operating hours (Figure 1) due to the high percentage of tyres that fail prematurely. In 2014 a total of 41% of all tyres failed prematurely and 61% were classified as ‘worn out’."

Technology is advancing at a rate that makes it extremely difficult for the mining Industry to keep pace. Many advances occur within a given piece of technology and often this is missed by the disciplines that could have gained advantage by its implementation. Often this may have been simply an aspect of cost exceeding benefit. However, there are some technologies that potentially have such a far-reaching impact on the mining industry that the benefits simply outweigh the cost. The application of 3D laser scanning in the mining industry has the potential of taking the concept of ?Google maps?? underground. This presents an opportunity where the virtual world of underground can be traversed with relative ease and many aspects of measurements could be obtained without having to visit the working place again, potentially saving countless man-hours and still delivering precision work with significant savings in downtime, stoppages, and exposure to safety incidents. Anglo American Platinum maintains its competitive advantage though the review and application of appropriate technology. This paper describes the 3D laser scanning trial at one of Anglo American Platinum?s new shafts, and goes on to show the benefits encountered through the application and the involvement of the various MRM disciplines.

Provisions of adequate thrust Conclusions INTRODUCTION In South African gold mines some 100 million tons of rock are broken each year by drilling and blasting. Only minor improvements to this method of rockbreaking have been made since the general introduction of pneumatic rockdrills for stoping 50 years ago and, more recently, of drillsteels tipped with tungsten carbide. The combined total cost of drilling and blasting amounts to almost R0,50 per ton of rock broken, which is just short of one quarter of the direct cost of stoping or development. Rockdrilling accounts for about R0,25 of the total cost of rockbreaking, of which RO,12 represents labour costs and R0,13 the cost of drillsteels, rockdrill spares and power. Mine air compressors use over 7 X 108 kWh of electric energy a year, amounting to 7 percent of the total electric power used by the gold mining industry. The efficiency of percussive rockdrilling is, therefore, of considerable significance to mining costs. Over the past four years the Mining Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of S.A. has been engaged in experimental studies of percussive drilling. These experiments were conducted at test sites on Robinson Deep Gold Mine and Vlakfontein Gold Mine, made available by Gold Fields of South Africa, Limited. Three rockdrills, designated types A, Band C, of different manufacture, were used in the experiments which involved the measurement of the following operating characteristics: 1. Throttle air pressure 2. Applied thrust 3. Penetration rate 4. Air consumption 5. Blows per minute 6. Drill steel revolutions per minute. The results of these investigations are presented in three parts. Part I, "The theory of percussive rockdrill operation" which provides a concise, mathematical description of the performance of a percussive rockdrill in terms of its principal mechanical dimensions and operating conditions, and an analysis of the bit and gauge wear of drillsteels. Part II, "Measurements of percussive rockdrill performance" in which the experimental results are presented in terms of thrust-penetration rate curves at different throttle air pressures and throttle pressure-air consumption curves, which are shown to agree well with the predictions of theory. In addition, data relating gauge wear on the drillsteel and penetration rate to the distance drilled are discussed. Part III, "Practical implications" in which an analysis of the status of thrusting devices is made and the benefits that would derive from using uptimum thrusts are discussed.

Back-analysis of two mining-induced tremors in 2011 was used to determine a modelling criterion for the entire Klerksdorp Goldfield (i.e., Vaal Reefs region). At that time, most mining operations in the region were owned by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and shared many geotechnical similarities. By 2018 AGA had sold off all its Klerksdorp operations to different mining companies, which continued applying the 2011 modelling criterion. As mining activities became more remote, scattered, and isolated, the extraction of isolated blocks of ground and remnants became increasingly necessary. However, the inherited criterion allowed only minimal or no mining activities at these areas. Keeping in mind that safety is the overriding consideration, an innovative numerical modelling approach, which includes the application of peak particle velocity designs, was developed to provide practitioners in the Klerksdorp Goldfield with a suitable criterion to justifiably and safely mine isolated blocks of ground and remnants. This would not always be possible if a conformist approach was used.

Various models of near-surface kimberlite pipe emplacement have been proposed over the years. These include a top-down, phreatomagmatic model, a bottom-up, embryonic pipe model and three top-down explosive dyke models. AU of these models consider kimberlites as essentially the same rock type. However, different kimberlites have different pipe shapes and contain different rock types with very specific mineral assemblages and textures and therefore are likely to have been emplaced by different processes. Some authors have considered local geological differences as the principal reason for the contrasting geology but others argue that, while geological differences might contribute locally the petrographic peculiarities of particular kimberlites may be due mainly to inherent compositional differences specifically in the ratios of juvenile CO2 and H2O.
