This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) computational techniques allow treatment of gases, liquids and solids in the same simulation. ALE methods include the ability to treat shock waves in gases, liquids and solids and the interaction of shock waves with each other and with media from one of the other categories. ALE codes can also treat explosive detonation and the expansion of the explosive gases and their interaction with air and solids. ALEGRA is a 3-D ALE code that has been developed at Sandia National Laboratories over the past few years. ALEGRA has been applied to a 2-D simulation of presplitting using decoupled explosives in rock blasting with very interesting results. The detonation of the explosive at the bottom of the hole sends a shock wave up the borehole driven by the explosive gas expanding into air. The explosive gas compresses the air against the stemming column where it rebounds and recompresses at the bottom of the borehole. This type of ringing takes several cycles to damp out. The explosively induced expansion of the borehole is also treated by ALEGRA as well as the shock wave imparted to the rock. The presentation of this paper will include several computer animations to aid in understanding this complex phenomenon.

Due to increasing concerns of global rare earth element shortfalls in the near future, possible alternative sources of rare earth elements have recently become of economic interest. One such alternative is decanting acid mine water originating primarily from abandoned old mines in the Witwatersrand region of the Republic of South Africa. In this study, a novel way of rare earth element removal from the acid mine drainage was employed, making use of bentonite clay, which has very good adsorbent properties, as a rare earth element carrier material. The process can be economically viable only, if the elements can be selectively removed from the bentonite clay carrier material so as to yield reusable clay. Acid leaching was proposed to liberate the adsorbed rare earth elements from the bentonite clay. Accordingly, acid leaching experiments were performed to study the desorption of three commonly-found rare earth elements, namely neodymium, samarium, and dysprosium, from bentonite clay in the presence of sulphuric and hydrochloric acid. It was established that the three rare earth element species could be selectively removed as a group from iron, magnesium, and manganese metals through the careful manipulation of the pH. An investigation into the kinetic aspects of the rare earth element desorption process from the bentonite clay was also undertaken. The applicability of various kinetic models such as zero-order, pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order, elovich, parabolic diffusion, and power function were tested to describe the time-dependent desorption of rare earth elements from bentonite clay. It was determined that the pseudo second-order kinetic model represented the dissolution processes for neodymium, samarium, and dysprosium from bentonite clay the most accurately.

Extraction of isolated blocks of ground with elevated levels of stress and/or seismicity is a common occurrence in South African gold mines. Isolated blocks of ground that are divorced from the main orebody and are bound by complex, dip and strike parallel, non-persistent geological structures dominate the Klerksdorp gold fields. No quantifiable methods exist to assess the risk associated with mining these and other classes of remnants. A case history, from a gold mine that planned to extract three remnant blocks hosted in a large complex fault system, is used to illustrate the decision making process based on a combination of underground observations, numerical and seismic techniques. Simple risk estimation matrices were developed and used to estimate remnant-mining risk and finally to quantify the decision on which of the three remnant blocks could be extracted at the lowest possible geo-mechanical risk. Il est courant dans les mines aurifères sud-africaines d’extraire des blocs de terrain isolés qui possèdent des niveaux élevés de contraintes et/ou sismicité. Les régions aurifères de Klerksdorp sont dominées par des blocs de terrain isolés qui sont séparés du gisement principal et qui sont retenus par des structures géologiques non continues, à parallèle de pendage et direction, et complexes. Il n’existe pas de méthodes quantifiables pour évaluer le risque associé à l’extraction de ce genre et autres genres de résidus. Une observation de cas, celle d’une mine d’or qui avait l’intention d’extraire trois blocs de résidus qui se trouvaient dans un grand système complexe de faille, est utilisée pour illustrer le processus décisionnel basé sur une combinaison d’observations souterraines, et de techniques numériques et sismiques. Des matrices simples d’estimation de risque furent développées et utilisées pour estimer le risque lié à l’extraction des résidus et finalement pour quantifier la décision sur lequel des trois blocs de résidus pouvait être exploité au moindre risque géo-mécanique. Die Extraktion isolierter Gesteinsblöcke mit erhöhtem Spannugsniveau oder Seismizität ist in südafrikanischen Goldminen üblich. Isolierte Gesteinsblöcke, die von der Haupterzader getrennt und durch komplexe, parallele abfallende und horizontale nicht persistent geologische Strukturen gebunden sind, beherrschen das Klerksdorp Goldfeld. Es gibt keine quantifizierbare Methoden die das Risiko welches mit dem Abbau dieser und anderer Klassen verbunden ist beschreiben. Eine Fallstudie einer Goldmine, welche die Extraktion von drei in einem großem komplexen Verwerfungssystem eingelagerten Einschlußblöcken plante, wird verwendet um den Entscheidungsprozeß zu illustrieren, der auf einer Kombination von Untertag Beobachtungen und numerischen und seismischen Techniken basiert. Einfache Gefahreinschätzungsmatrizen wurden entwickelt und angewendet um das Abbaurestrisiko abzuschätzen und letztendlich die Entscheidung zu quantifizieren, welcher der drei Einschlußblöcke unter dem niedrigst möglichen geo-mechanischen Risiko extrahiert werden konnte .

This paper gives an overview of the difficulties associated with determining the strength of hard-rock pillars. Although a number of pillar design tools are available, pillar collapses still occur. Recent examples of large-scale pillar collapses in South Africa suggest that these were caused by weak partings that traversed the pillars. Currently two different methods are used to determine the strength of pillars, namely, empirical equations derived from back analyses of failed and stable cases, and numerical modelling tools using appropriate failure criteria. The paper illustrates that both techniques have their limitations and additional work is required to obtain a better understanding of pillar strength. Empirical methods based on observations of pillar behaviour in a given geotechnical setting are popular and easy to use, but care should be exercised that the results are not inappropriately extrapolated beyond the environment in which they are established. An example is the Hedley and Grant formula (derived for the Canadian uranium mines), which has been used for many years in the South African platinum and chrome mines (albeit with some adaptation of the K-value). Very few collapses have been reported in South Africa for layouts designed using this formula, suggesting that in some cases it might yield estimates of pillar strength that are too conservative. As an alternative, some engineers strongly advocate the use of numerical techniques to determine pillar strength. A close examination unfortunately reveals that these techniques also rely on many assumptions. An area where numerical modelling is invaluable, however, is in determining pillar stresses accurately and for studying specific pillar failure mechanisms, such as the influence of weak partings on pillar strength. In conclusion, it appears that neither empirical techniques nor numerical modelling can be used solely to provide a solid basis for conducting pillar design. It is therefore recommended that both these techniques should be utilized to obtain the best possible insight into a given design problem. Owing to the uncertainties regarding pillar strength and loading stiffness, monitoring in trial mining sections and in established mining areas is also an essential tool to test the stability of pillar layouts in particular geotechnical areas.

The embrittlement of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by hydrogen dosing at elevated temperature has been investigated. Metal coupons were subjected to isothermal treatments in a partial hydrogen atmosphere in the temperature range from 650ºC?950ºC and the degree of embrittlement after treatment was determined by drop-weight impact testing. Embrittlement was found to be inversely related to reaction temperature as a result of the combined effects of greater hydrogen absorption and titanium hydride precipitation at the lower isothermal temperatures. The world mineral industry has over the years experienced growth in the production of nickel (Ni) due to its use not only in the catalytic industry but mainly also to its demand in the stainless steel production industry. Hence there is a need to produce more pure and marketable grades of Ni through the use of efficient purification routes such as solvent extraction. The V10-LIX®84-IC system resulted in nickel (Ni) extraction isotherm shifting to lower pH levels. The pH window of opportunity for the extraction of Ni subsequently increased in solution containing magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) even though the system also resulted in slight shifts to less positive pH values for Mg and Ca curves. Results showed a synergistic effect of LIX®84-IC when added to V10 for all elements, Ni, Mg and Ca. The pH50 values for elements Ni, Mg and Ca in the V10-LIX®84-IC system were 2.95, 8.10 and 7.70 respectively. Comparing results obtained when using V10 alone produced ?pH50 for Ni, Mg and Ca being 3.35, 0.15 and 0.70 respectively, which was a confirmation of the synergistic shifts for all the elements. The ?pH50 (Mg-Ni)value was 1.95 with no synergism and 5.15 with synergism and that for ?pH50 (Ca-Ni)was 2.10 with no synergism and 4.75 with synergism. This showed that the Ni-Mg separation factor was relatively larger than the Ni-Ca. Improved loading and stripping kinetics were also observed. Caving of the second lift of the E26 orebody at Northparkes Mines was monitored with a comprehensive package of instrumentation, including an ISS seismic monitoring system. Seismicity was collected by an array of 19 triaxial accelerometers and 9 uniaxial geophones, giving a high quality seismic data set. The seismic response to block caving at Northparkes has been divided into two papers. The first paper focuses on the seismicity during undercutting. The second paper deals primarily with the seismicity during cave propagation during initial cave production. In this paper, traditional seismic monitoring concepts are applied to seismicity during cave mining. More than 40 000 seismic events were recorded during cave undercutting between February and January 2004. Events up to local magnitude +1.3 were recorded near the mine during undercutting, with event rates of up to 500 per day. Analysis of frequency-magnitude distributions, S-wave to P-wave energy, and temporal variations in event magnitude all gave insight into the seismicity recorded. In addition, a new technique, called apparent stress time history, was shown to be sensitive to stress change from undercut blasting, and useful to identify significant periods during cave development. A significant difference was identified between the cave back location and the halo of seismic events above the cave. Throughout the undercutting, the a seismic zone of loosening was typically 50 to 70 metres in vertical thickness. Based on the seismicity, a stress driven rock mass failure model is proposed. Early in the undercutting, seismicity and movements in the seismogenic zone were directly triggered by stress change from undercutting. Towards the end of undercutting, seismicity was virtually uncorrelated with undercut blasting, and likely due to the onset of cave initiation.

A wide range of minerals is found within the Republic of South Africa, many of which are exploited to a greater extent than in similar deposits found elsewhere. It is often asked whether this is atributed to the high grade of the ores encountered in this country, or whether such factors as fiscal and Infrastructural incentives create an economic climate that has en bled the mining industry to successfully extract and market minerals at a profit. This paper views South Africa's mineral resources in a regional and global context In an attempt to place the country's geological wealth in perspective. It represents the author's own Views, and not necessarily those of the Department of Mine al and Energy Affairs.

Failed attempts at amalgamation of a gold/osmiridium concentrate, recovered behind pebble mill liners during re-lining, led to the discovery that the gold particles were coated and that nitric acid only could remove the coatings. Following this treatment amalgamation was rapid and resulted in a complete recovery of the gold that otherwise would have been lost in plant residues. Investigations into the nature and formation of the coatings led to the realization that the coatings were impregnations of harder elements, associated with the gold during grinding and driven into the softer gold surface by high pressure, impact and attrition. It was further realized that this phenomenon could be part of gold ore milling, world-wide. With these thoughts in mind the question is asked whether concentration down to micron sizes prior to cyanidation, should not play a greater role in gold recovery.

Energy consumption, being a large proportion of the input of the ferroalloy production process, can be measured in terms of the efficiency with which the energy is utilized and the effectiveness with which it is used. The efficiency of the usage of energy revolves around the specific consumption of the energy for the production of the alloy, which encompasses the thermodynamic aspects of the process and is more of a metallurgical function that will not be addressed further in this paper. The effectiveness with which the energy is utilized is determined by the optimisation of the electricity supply from the utility (in this case Eskom). The South African electricity supply industry is on the brink of considerable restructuring, implying changes in ownership, structure and regulation. In other countries, however, restructuring has often seen higher prices. Owing to the diversity of growth prospects in South African markets, Eskom is turning to new market management and generation strategies. In future, Eskom will develop pricing strategies to increase demand from attractive customer segments such as paper & pulp, iron & steel, aluminium, and other metallurgical industries. There will be a broader spectrum of product offerings, including dynamic pricing options and demand-side management incentives. In a future electricity market that will become more dynamic and demanding, it will become increasingly important for electricity consumers to optimise their electricity supply. There are many facets in optimising the electricity supply, which include optimal utilisation of the tariff, integrating energy cost management into the production planning process, implementation of demand-side management actions, modelling, scenario planning (.what-ifs?.), optimisation, maintenance scheduling coordinated with the tariff periods, etc. This paper gives consideration to the status of the development of technology at the manganese alloy works of Samancor at Meyerton, South Africa in order to increase the effectiveness with which energy is utilized.

Many factors affect the overall performance of a gravity circuit beyond that of the primary gravity recovery device. It is critical to examine the gravity circuit in its entirety in order to determine the dominant operating variables that affect overall performance. Knelson has developed a mathematical model which has been used to assist in the design of gravity circuits, and in particular, in making accurate predictions of plant scale gravity recovery. More recently, inclusion of recovery by particle size class and additional data from various mine sites and research studies has made the model more robust. The model is now able to predict GRG (gravity-recoverable-gold) recoveries using various devices such as centrifugal concentrators, shaking tables, jigs and flash-flotation within the grinding circuit. The benefits derived by these recent advancements in modeling capability are two-fold; the first is as a tool to assist in circuit design and correct equipment selection and the second is as an analytical tool to help to evaluate and enhance the performance of existing gravity circuits.

Anglo Platinum?s Waterval smelting complex based in South Africa operates the Anglo Converting Process (ACP) that produces SO2 offgas. This SO2 offgas is treated in a double-contact, double-absorption acid plant allowing for conversion efficiencies higher than 99.90 %. The catalytic converter used in the acid plant to convert the SO2 to SO3 is a 4-bed reactor loaded with a combination of cesium-promoted and conventional vanadium pentoxide catalysts. In June 2008 there was a shutdown, in which one of the main activities was to screen the catalyst. Before this shutdown, the operator would control the converter pass temperatures manually, via the SCADA, especially during plant start-ups after which some of the automatic temperature controllers were used. After the shutdown, the control philosophy was revisited and all temperature controllers were put on auto mode during plant start up. Furthermore the set points of the pass inlet temperatures were reduced to maximize conversion in the first two passes. The result has been a reduction of SO2 emissions, from a daily average of 50 ? 70 ppm to as low as 20 ppm for similar sulphur dioxide and oxygen concentrations. Further work has been done to maintain high bed temperatures in the third and fourth passes at low SO2 strengths by splitting the gas stream between pass 1 and 2 thus increasing the SO2 content in the gas to pass 2. This increases the temperature of the gas exiting the second pass, which results in higher temperatures in passes 3 and 4. Comparison of the converter performance prior to and after the changes is made. The benefits of partially bypassing the first pass to increase the SO2 content in the gas to the second pass are shown. Conclusions and scope for further work have been drawn from the comparisons.

Estimation techniques such as polygonal, triangular prism, trapezoid, isopach maps, and inverse distance methods are often used in ore or industrial minerals deposit evaluation. These techniques do not express the variability of the deposit and do not allow a determination of the reliability of the estimates. However, geostatistical methods can express a measure of the error associated with the estimates, by finding weighting coefficients for a given mining block, and can also help with data configuration that minimizes the error. This work addresses an application study on the quality and reserve characteristics of the cement raw materials of the Adana Cement Factory in Adana, Turkey, based on the spatial distribution and variability of the chemical components (Si02, CaO, A1203, Fe203). The study has been carried out using a geostatistical procedure that is useful for site assessment, characterization, and monitoring situations where data are collected spatially. Directional and omnidirectional experimental variograms of the cement raw material variables showed that neither strong geometric nor severe zonal anisotropy exists in the data. The most evident spatial dependence structure expressing the continuity for omnidirectional experimental variograms were characterized by exponential and spherical variogram models. These models have been used in cross¬-validation analysis, which proved that these models, their parameters, and kriging parameters are applicable for the study area. Quality contour maps of the deposits at given levels underground were estimated using a kriging interpolation technique. Anomalies such as bullseyes and drift were not observed in the maps that were generated. Kriged maps showed the spatial distribution of quality continuity and variability of the deposits. Grade-tonnage curves and total tonnage estimates in the particular grade were determined using ordinary kriging in order to improve the mining operation and planning. Consequently, local uncertainty and the probability of extreme values occurring are tools of prime importance for the mine planning, the optimum mix of raw materials coming from different quarry stopes.

Amandelbult Mine is currently undertaking a trial to mechanise the mining of the UG2 reef through the introduction of room and pillar mining. As part of the trial, a system of managing the control of the hanging wall has been introduced, based on systems and technology that are proving successful in the nearby coal mining industry. The principal features are the use of a high bond strength, stiff bolting system which can be easily installed to a high standard, and a range of in situ tests and measurements to optimise the level of support installed to control the movement of the hanging wall. The rock bolt system and the measurements and tests described are new to the platinum mining industry. The paper describes these systems and their adaptation and application to hard rock mining. La Mine d’Amandelbult est actuellement dans des essais en vue de mécaniser l’extraction dans la veine UG2 grâce à l’introduction d’une exploitation par chambres et piliers. Dans le cadre de ces essais, un système de gestion de la paroi suspendue a été introduit, base sur des systèmes et une technologie qui prouvent donner de bons résultats dans l’industrie voisine d’extraction de la houille. Les caractéristiques principales sont l’utilisation d’un système de verrouillage raide et à forte adhérence qui peut être installé à un haut niveau de qualité et une gamme d’essais et de mesures in situ pour optimiser le niveau de soutien installé pour contrôler le mouvement de la paroi suspendue. Le système de verrouillage de la roche ainsi que les mesures et les essais décrits sont une nouveauté dans l’industrie minière du platine. La communication décrit ces systèmes ainsi que leur adaptation et leur application à l’exploitation minière en roche dure. Amandelbult Mine unternimmt gegenwärtig einen Test um den Abbau des UG2 Riffs durchEinführung des Kammerpfeilbau zu mechanisieren. Als Teil dieses Tests wurde ein System zur Kontrolle der Stollenfirstes eingeführt, welches auf jenen Systemen und Technologien basiert, diesich im nahe gelegenen Kohlebergbau als erfolgreich erwiesen. Die prinzipiellen Charakteristikasind der Gebrauch von einem steifen Bolzensytem mit hohem Verbundwiderstand die leicht zueinem hohen Standard gebracht werden können, und eine Reihe von in-situ Tests und Messungenum das Niveau der installierten Unterstützung zu optimieren, und um die Bewegung desStollenfirstes zu kontrollieren. Das Gesteinsbolzensystem, die Messungen und die Tests, diebeschrieben werden, sind neu in der Platinbergbauindustrie. Keywords: Anglo American, Anglo Platinum Ltd, Waterval, Mortimer, Polokwane, ACP, pyrometallurgy, platinum, PGMs Anglo Platinum Ltd is the largest primary platinum producer in the world and operates three smelters in South Africa: Waterval, Mortimer and Polokwane. The operational details of the smelters are covered in previous reviews, thus only unit operations that have been upgraded are discussed. The most significant of the upgrades include the installation of a second ACP converter at Waterval Smelter in 2006 and the anticipated upgrade of Mortimer Smelter to 38MW in 2011. Several advances have been made in the smelting operations to improve the furnace stability and longevity. Control of the chromium input to each of the smelters has substantially allowed continued operations at levels below the spinel saturation point in slag, which results in lowered matte and slag temperatures. Mogalakwena concentrate, arising from the Platreef ore, is used to dilute high chromium-containing concentrates. In addition, furnace controls have improved in terms of crucible temperature and condition monitoring, improved feeding control, management of alarms and trips and having the quality of instrumentation and operational rigour required to support this. Advances have been made on the ACP converter in terms of good converter matte quality, and increased intensity and efficiency of operation. Combined with improvements to both the conventional and tower sulfuric acid plants, the emissions from Waterval Smelter have been reduced substantially since the introduction of the ACP. This is in spite of increasing metal throughput. The Anglo Platinum Ltd smelting operations have made significant progress since 2006 and further advances are envisaged to further improve on safety, reduce costs, increase efficiencies and throughput, while reducing emissions.

Carbothermic process of Ferro Silicon production is primarily a slag-less process. However, slag formation is observed in the regular operation as experienced by almost all the Ferro Silicon Producers in different pro-portions. The problem of slagging in the furnaces may be due to: a)Variation in the input burden charge material quality b)Fluctuations in the Carbon balance and/or c)Fluctuations in the Electrode penetrations The problem will be more severe in nature with the increase of the size of the furnace. The operation performance of the furnace gets badly affected if the slag formed in the furnace is not removed from the bath in time and to the maximum extent possible. It is, therefore, very essential to know the characteristics of the slag formed in the Ferro Silicon Furnaces, besides eliminating the very cause of formation itself; and to find the routes of draining of the same from the furnace bath effectively. This paper envisages the effects of using the LIME STONE in the Ferro Silicon Burden in stabilizing the 48MVA Furnace for improved performance and better consistency. Quality fluctuations in the available Raw Materials are compared with that of the requirements for the Ferro Silicon production. The furnace operational data is compared for 12 months period each for the period corresponding to the before and after usage of lime stone in the burden and found encouraging results in the performance. Implications of use of Lime Stone in the burden on the quality of the output alloy are also studied.

A blast was engineered close to a tunnel in a deep-level mine with the purpose of studying the wave interaction with the tunnel. Numerical modelling of seismic wave propagation was used in both the forward planning and the back-analysis of this experiment. This paper presents the forward analysis. A likely model for a propagating blast was investigated and developed. This model predicts the influence of the velocity of detonation of the blast and the rise-time of the blast on the radiation pattern, and hence on the expected positions of maximum velocity at the tunnel surface. An attempt was made to quantify the parameters of the blast model, using waveform data from two other blast experiments. The blast model caused particle velocities which were an order of magnitude lower than these measured velocities. Large values for blast pressure were required to match the amplitudes of the recorded velocities. An alternative ?effective? source with a similar mechanism but increased diameter was proposed to account for the higher velocities. It was established that distant velocities scale with the square of the borehole diameter. A calibration blast at the experimental site was also modelled. Agreement in the waveforms was not sufficient for conclusive statements to be made about the validity of the source model. However, the modelled waveforms show an encouraging correspondence with some measured waveforms. This gave confidence that the model could be used to examine wave propagation around the tunnel, and allowed a scaled source to be developed for forward analysis of the main experiment.

This paper reviews how uncertainty has been dealt with over the past 40 years using the decision making cycle as a frame of reference. The review of the phases of this cycle, as applied to rockmechanics and rock engineering, namely characterization, performance analysis, updating and decision making shows that in each, progress has been made over the past 40 years, although most of the basic concepts existed already in the 1960’s. Characterization is the area in which the greatest scientific steps were taken, this phase and performance analysis also gained from the tremendously expanded computational capabilities which allow one to use both more complex and more practically oriented models. The greatest practical advance is without using any doubt in risk based decision making although its acceptance shows interesting differences between different professions. Dans l’article suivant on utilise le cycle de décision pour illustrer le développement du traitement des incertitudes en mécanique des roches et en construction en roche dans les quarante années passées. La revue des phases du cycle de décision montre qu’on a fait du progrès dans chaque phase du cycle de décision, c’est à dire dans la caractérisation, dans l’analyse et la prédiction du comportement, dans l’actualisation et dans l’acte de décision, même si les concepts fondamentaux existaient déjà dans les années 1960. Les plus grands avancements scientifiques se trouvent dans le domaine de la caractérisation tandis que l’analyse prédictive profitait du développement de l’informatique qui a mené à des modèles plus complexes mais aussi plus pratiques. Ce procédé est devenu assez commun même s’il y a encore des différences d’acceptation entre différentes professions. Im vorliegenden Artikel wird der Entscheidungszyklus gebraucht, um darzustellen wie sich derUmgang mit Unsicherheiten im Felsbau während der letzen 40 Jahre entwickelt hat. DerÜberblick über die Phasen des Entscheidungsprozesses zeigt, dass bei der Anwendung in derFelsmechanik und im Felsbau, in allen Phasen d.h. bei der Charakterisierung, bei der analytischenVorhersage, beim Aktualisieren und bei der Entscheidungsfindung Fortschritte gemacht wurden,obwohl die grundlegenden Konzepte bereits in den 1960er Jahren existierten. Im Gebiet derCharakterisierung gab es wohl die grössten wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen, während dieanalytische Vorhersage vor allem von den Fortschritten der Informatik profitierte, welchekomplexere wie auch praktischere Modelle möglich machte. Der grösste Fortschritt ist ganz sicherin der Entscheidungsfindung zu beobachten, wo Risikobetrachtungen gang und gäbe sind, obwohlhier noch einige Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenen Berufsgattungen zu finden sind.

The 2101 lean duplex stainless steel has wide potential application in storage, heat exchangers, and in the oil and gas industries. This work investigates the electrochemical behaviour of 2101 duplex stainless steel with an addition of 0.15 wt% ruthenium, using potentiodynamic techniques in 1M H2SO4 at 25º, 40º, 60º, and 80ºC. The microstructures of samples were characterized using optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the ruthenium addition moved the corrosion potential of alloy 2101 to a more positive potential. All samples containing ruthenium displayed longer passive regions at 25°C and 80°C compared to those without ruthenium. Alloys without ruthenium had higher critical current density (icrit) values when compared to the alloys with ruthenium. Ruthenium additions decreased the passive current densities and inhibited anodic dissolution. At room temperature the corrosion rate of alloys with ruthenium was lower than these without ruthenium.

As part of safety and stability studies at three underground mines in the United States, researchers installed earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges in cemented rockfill to measure stress and strain changes as mining progressed and the rockfill was loaded. Data from these instruments were used to calculate the in situ modulus of the rockfill for two of the mines. A three-dimensional numerical model of a cemented rockfill cap was validated with data from extensometers anchored in the mine roof and sill; this model was then used to estimate deformation modulus at the third mine because the earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges recorded negligible changes. Rockfill binder used at these mines ranged from 4 to 8 per cent of the dry components by weight, the water-to-cement ratio was from 0.42 to1.0, and the largest aggregate size in the three mixes ranged from 5 to12 cm (2 to 4.7 in). The range of the calculated in situ deformation modulus values was large, but as expected, it was bracketed by modulus values for cemented tailings and roller-compacted concrete with similar cement contents and water-to-cement ratios. Dans le cadre d’études sur la sécurité et la stabilité de trois mines souterraines situées aux États-Unis, les chercheurs ont installé des palpeurs de pression des terres et des extensomètres d’encastrement dans les remblais cimentés afin de mesurer les variations relatives à l’effort et à la déformation des terrains durant l’exploitation minière et le chargement du remblai. Les données recueillies à l’aide de ces instruments ont servi au calcul du module in situ du remblai dans deux de ces mines. Le modèle numérique tridimensionnel de la semelle d’un remblai cimenté a été validé à partir des données recueillies par les extensomètres ancrés dans la voûte et dans la semelle de ces mines; ce modèle a ensuite été utilisé pour estimer le module de déformation à la troisième mine, étant donné que les palpeurs de pression des terres et les tensiomètres enfouis avaient relevés des variations négligeables. Das in diesen Gruben verwendete Steinschüttungsbindemittel variierte zwischen vier und acht Prozent an Trockenkomponenten nach Gewicht, der Wasser-Zementfaktor betrug zwischen 0,42 und 1,0 und die größte Zuschlagstoff-größe in den drei Mischungen schwankte zwischen fünf und zwölf Zentimetern. Die Reichweite der berechneten Werte des In-Situ-Deformationsmoduls fiel etwas breit aus, aber es fand erwartungsgemäß eine Klammerung der Modulwerte zwischen den Zemen-trückständen und dem durch Walzen verdichteten Beton mit ähnlichem Zementanteil und Wasser-Zementfaktor statt.
