AngloGold Ashanti has been proactive in the field of energy management for many years. AngloGold Ashanti is a signatory to South Africa?s National Energy Accord of 2005 calling for a15% reduction in energy consumption by 2015 for the mining sector. This target also supported our internal targets that were already set. AngloGold Ashanti?s seven South African mines consume on average 440 MW. Due to the dynamics of gold mines, and the large numbers of relatively small energy efficiency initiatives and awareness campaigns made measurement and verification of energy efficiency very difficult at a macro level since some initiatives could get lost in the fluctuating load profile. This paper will discuss the methodology and process followed to quantify the impacts of the combined energy efficiency initiatives at macro level. It will quantify the energy efficiency impacts in megawatt-hours (MWh), financial, and equivalent carbon emissions (CO2e) reduction with reference to our baseline year, 2004, for the Vaal River and West Wits mine clusters.

In extracting base metals from ore bodies, sulphide as well as oxide, the main environmental concern is sulphur, whether in the form of sulphurous gases or sulphate in liquid form. Generally sulphur is in over supply in developed countries mainly because of strict legislation to capture it. In developing countries on the other hand there is usually a shortage of sulphur because of less strict environmental legislation. Africa falls in this second category and the African continent imports substantial amounts of sulphur despite the fact that large quantities of sulphur is emitted by smelters, thermal power stations, coal mines, fertilizer manufacturers and others. Other than making acid from gaseous emissions, existing methods to capture sulphur from gaseous and liquid effluents are uneconomical and it ends up in the environment either as ammonium sulphate (from gaseous effluents) or as gypsum (from liquid effluents). The CSIR?s Environmentek and Pyroserv has developed a process whereby gaseous sulphur emissions and sulphates in liquid effluents can be economically captured and converted into elemental sulphur and metal carbonates. The elemental sulphur is of high purity as it is precipitated from a gas stream and is readily marketable. The metal carbonates (barium or calcium) can be recycled back to the process or marketed. The only harmful byproduct of the process is carbon dioxide. Should natural gas or methane be available the carbon dioxide could be reduced by about one third. Should solar, wind or hydro energy be available to generate hydrogen the carbon dioxide emissions would be zero. Employing this technology could make Africa independent of sulphur imports and furthermore reduce the impact of acid rain and seepage of sulfate from gypsum and other waste dumps into the environment.

Copper smelter dust (CSD) is a byproduct of copper smelting and is composed of considerable amounts of copper values and also contaminants (like silica and mullite). Silica in CSD forms Siloxane, a low density material, which is difficult to separate from the aqueous phase during solvent extraction. The need therefore arises to reduce/remove the aluminosilicates for better grade and recovery of copper in subsequent processes. This paper reports the use of two types of centrifugal gravity concentrators, namely Knelson (KGC) and Falcon (FGC), for upgrade of copper in CSD. The aim was achieved by an initial characterisation (Particle Size Distribution (PSD) and mineralogical analysis), together with Density Separation (DS) experimentation, premised on a hypothetical density difference between copper oxide and silicon/aluminum oxide. Wet screening results showed that 88.52 % of CSD particles were in -53 μm fraction. Further PSD study using laser diffraction showed the -53 μm fraction to be composed mainly of 26 μm, 22 μm and 18.5 μm fractions. Mineralogical analysis showed copper to occur mainly as oxides (24.34 wt%), but also as sulphides (7.95 wt%), and a substantial amount of aluminosilicates (42.97 wt%) were identified. Density of CSD was determined as 2.83 g/cm3. Copper content (18.02 wt%) in CSD was upgraded to 35.94 wt% in concentrate using KGC. In conclusion, the results showed good convergence between hypothesis and experiment. Additionally, it was also concluded that KGC performed better than FGC for copper upgrade in CSD. The utilization of biomass as a solid fuel for co-firing has received great attention from boiler manufacturers as a clean coal technology (CCT) option. This research aimed to produce biocoal pellets, as a clean energy fuel, using hydrochar from trees planted to rehabilitate acid mine drainage (AMD) water and fine coal discards. The hydrochar was synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization of Searsia lancea harvested from AMD-contaminated land at a temperature of 280°C and a residence time of 90 minutes. It was blended with discard coal (–1 mm) at ratios of 25% and 50% hydrochar to produce different forms of solid pelletized biocoal (BC). The physicochemical and mechanical properties of each of the biocoal pellet blends were determined. The 100% hydrochar had the highest calorific value of 29.99 MJ/kg, while the raw discard coal had a calorific value of 16.73 MJ/kg. The ash content decreased from 42% in the discard coal to 25% in the blend of 50% coal and 50% hydrochar biocoal pellets. Biocoal pellets comprising 25% hydrochar and 75% discard coal (BC25 HC/75 COAL) displayed the best mechanical properties (compressive strength 3.06 MPa) of all the fuels, but the physicochemical properties were inferior to the BC50 HC/50 COAL pellets. This research has demonstrated that hydrochar synthesized from a tree species planted for hydraulic control of AMD has the capability to act as a binder for improving the mechanical properties and energy characteristics of fine discard coal.

The concentration of cassiterite at Iscor's Uis Mine is described, and information is given on aspects of the concentration of iron ore at Thabazimbi and Sishen Mines. At Uis, a very Iow-grade tin ore is concentrated by three-stage jigging, spiral concentration, and tabling to give a high-grade concentrate with a recovery of 80 per cent of the tin. A Iow-grade tantalite-columbite concentrate is also produced. The possibility of recovering mica, the use of sluice boxes instead of spirals, and the recovery of cassiterite from minus 45 µm material are being investigated. At the two iron-ore mines, heavy-medium separation is applied to size fractions larger than 0,5 mm. The types of ferrosilicon and the circuits used for the recovery of ferrosilicon from the various dilute-medium circuits are described. The spiral-concentration plant being installed at Thabazimbi for the treatment of the minus 0,5 mm portion of the ore is described.

Careful monitoring of the position of the cave front is essential for well-managed block cave mining. Seismic monitoring systems yield 3-D information about the location of fracturing ahead of the cave. However, because the a seismic gap between cave surface and seismogenic zone is of unknown extent, the cluster of micro-seismicity can only yield an upper bound for the cave height. The large velocity contrast between the fractured rock in the aseismic gap and the broken loose material within the cave can be used by an inversion procedure to find a few simple geometric parameters (such as height of the top of the cave) if a simple 3-D shape?for example a paraboloid?is assumed for the cave. Ray-tracing must be used as the large velocity contrasts cause seismic waves to bend around the cave, but the inversion takes the form of a minimization problem in only a few dimensions and so the computational time is feasible. This technique has been successfully tested on realistic synthetic data.

Methods of research and control of the intensity of gas inflow to undersoil layers, after the mines were abandoned are presented in the paper. Gas migration causes them to penetrate to lower storeys of buildings and earthen structures being a menace to people's health and life. The results of measurements of gas concentration in undersoil layers, gas emission to atmosphere and their accumulation in buildings on the territory of closed down mines are presented.

High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are employed in cement plants worldwide. Although the technology has been mastered in the majority of applications, design-, scale-up- and operationalchallenges still exist today. In addition to modelling throughput, energy requirement and comminution success, the prediction and avoidance of malfunctions is of great importance in current research. The performance of the mill is highly influenced by the roll speed and the fineness of the feed material. Another parameter influencing the composition of mill feed is the circulating load, which is determined by the grinding circuit configuration, the target fineness and the separation efficiency of the classifier. In order to meet this circumstance and simultaneously maintain a reasonable level of material input and testing effort, a complete grinding circuit on a small technical scale was set up in the research centre of Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions AG. The present study varied the roll speed (0.5-2 m/s) and the proportion of fines in the feed (0-75 %) in order to investigate the influence of both parameters on the finish grinding of a Portland cement with a target fineness of 4000 cm²/g according to Blain. The experimental results are compared with model concepts and critically examined with regard to their transferability to industrial plants. Keywords: Cement grinding, grinding circuit, HPGR

Professor R.P. King holds a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, which he obtained at the University of Manchester in 1963. After that he lectured in the Departments of Chemical Engineering at the Universities of the Witwatersrand and Natal. From 1968 to 1973, he was Leader of the Chemical Engineering Research Group of the National Institute for Metallurgy at the latter University. Mr C.E. Fivaz, Pr. Eng., is Chief Consulting Metallurgist of Rand Mines (Mining & Services) Limited, and is responsible for the metallurgical activities of the Gold and Uranium Division and the Coal and Base Minerals Division of the Group.

"The effect of particle size on the flotation kinetics of a low-rank coal was compared using air bubbles and oily bubbles. Five kinetic models were applied to the data from the tests to derive the relationships between the flotation rate constant, the ultimate recovery, and the particle size fraction. The results show that oily bubble flotation (OBF) resulted in a lower ash content and higher combustible recovery than air bubble flotation (ABF), especially for the -125 ??m size fraction. It was found that the flotation of a low-rank coal in individual size fractions using air bubbles and oily bubbles can be best described by a first-order model with rectangular distribution of tendency to float and the classical first-order model respectively. OBF yielded higher ultimate combustible and ultimate ash recoveries. The flotation rate constants for OBF were higher in all the models except for the fully mixed reactor model. The ultimate recovery values and modified rate constants first increased and then decreased as the size fraction decreased. The trend of the flotation rate constants as a function of the size fraction was similar in all the models except for the fully mixed reactor model. IntroductionFroth flotation is a physical-chemical separation method that is widely used in coal beneficiation for the separation of fine coal particles from associated minerals in water slurries. Since the cumulative recovery of a component in the concentrate is proportional to flotation time, the flotation process can be considered as a time-rate recovery process (Emad, Mohammad, and Bahram, 2010). Therefore, the general mathematical flotation models that incorporate both a recovery and a rate function can describe flotation time recovery profiles.The kinetics of coal flotation, as a measure of coal recovery as a function of time, have been studied in detail by many researchers. Different kinetic models have been proposed and published in the literature. The order and the rate constant are strongly dependent on the flotation conditions, such as the particle size and size distribution, the bubble concentration, the reagent concentrations, and the operating parameters (Zhang et al., 2013). The particle size has been reported to affect the flotation kinetics to a great extent (Yoon, Luttrell, and Asmatulu, 2002; Ntengwe and Witika, 2011). Numerous researchers have studied the aspects of flotation kinetics while paying special attention to particle size (Meftuni and Ibrahim, 1997; Rubinstein and Samygin, 1998; Graeme, 2012). However, the effect of particle size on the flotation kinetics of a low-rank coal has been relatively little discussed."

The minerals sector continues to draw attention from policy makers who would want to see both old and new mineral projects add value to the minerals in the host country. The current technological development in the leaching of manganese oxide ores to produce a high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate, a compound that is used in the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles or long-life storage cells for the renewable energy market, has led to junior mining companies spearheading this technology in new projects across the globe. In this paper, we researched the high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate project pipeline and used projected production volumes and C1 cash costs to construct the industry supply curve for six projects, including the K.Hill project owned by Giyani Metals Corporation near Kanye, in the southern part of Botswana. The aim was to determine the ideal conditions that would provide a comparative advantage for further local value addition to high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate and to the end user product. The results showed that while the estimated C1 cash costs would place the K.Hill project as the second highest cost producer from among five projects, it would nonetheless have healthy profit margins due to the high projected price of high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate. The study recommended policy options, which, if implemented, could further encourage the exploitation and value addition of battery metals in Botswana.

"The ventilation system of the Pyhasalmi Mine is described. The mine is located in an area where the annual atmospheric temperature may vary from +30°C to -30°C. Natural ventilation causes serious difficulties because the underground mine is connected by drifts and finger raises to the bottom of the 120 m-deep open pit.The natural ventilation tends to make the ventilation net unstable. The paper describes how the instability characteristics of the ventilation net can be studied and how they have been taken into account when automating the control of the ventilation. In addition, the software, hardware and costs of the system are described. The system consists of 12 automated ventilation doors, two mine fans, 8 elements for sensing the air flow and temperatures, a control panel and a process computer."

Chemical assays collected from blast holes have the potential to greatly improve the local accuracy of grade models. Assays must be assigned to the correct domain or they will introduce errors. Boundary surfaces created from the widely spaced exploration holes (~50m) do not provide sufficient resolution to correctly delineate domain boundaries between closely spaced (3-5m) blast holes. This paper demonstrates a probabilistic method for classifying production blast holes near domain boundaries. Gaussian processes models are applied to identify the assays and assay ratios most suited to distinguishing particular domains. These models are combined with the exploration based surfaces to classify the blast holes that can be confidently assigned to a particular domain. A reiterative method is used, where information from the blast holes closest to the exploration holes is used to label blast holes further away. This is tested on two domain boundaries in a banded iron formation-hosted iron ore mine.

Zincor operates four Lurgi fluidized-bed roasters at its roast-leach-electrowin refinery in Springs, South Africa. In 2006, Zincor?s four roasters had reached ages ranging between 26 and 38 years, while the expected life of this type of roaster is generally 20 to 25 years. Roaster 3 was the first to be rebuilt in 2006 because its condition had deteriorated the most. Roaster 4 is being rebuilt in 2007 and the last two roasters will be rebuilt over the next few years as necessary. The main damage to Roaster 3 was caused by buckling of the roaster steel shell. This caused the freeboard and dome areas to shift, resulting in cracks in the dome brick lining and crumbling of the bricks lining the freeboard. The steel shell buckled owing to the combined effects of excessively high operating temperatures and corrosion. These were caused by the following two main factors: ?Thicker external insulation was installed during a previous maintenance shut, which resulted in an increased steel shell temperature and exacerbated the normal metal fatigue ?SO2/SO3 containing gas that had permeated the brick lining passed through its dew point during frequent planned and unplanned shuts over the life of the roaster. This caused acid formation between the refractory brick lining and steel shell, resulting in corrosion of the shell. The initial plan was to replace only the damaged areas of Roaster 3, but when it was dismantled more damage was found, and the roaster was rebuilding from the tuyeres upwards. During there building the opportunity was taken to modify the design of some of the brickwork to extend its life and make future repairs easier. This paper discusses the mode of failure of Roaster 3 and the lessons learnt during its dismantling and rebuilding.

Some observations on 'ancient' mining at Phalaborwa C. E. MORE. B.A. (Pretoria) (Visitor) A brief account is given of historical references to the Phalaborwa area, the first being to the mountain of copper and iron sought by Francois de Cuiper in 1725. These are followed by a description of several finds in the area, which are related to finds described in the literature and to Bantu tradition on the subject. Phalaborwa is one of the earliest known mining sites in the Republic of South Africa, Loolekop having been a mining centre, as shown by carbon-14 dating, since 770 A.D.

Residual collectors and their byproducts (e.g., CS2) in flotation effluents can cause water contamination and even result in serious health hazards to humans and animals, Therefore, residual flotation reagents should be removed properly before discharge or recirculation into flotation circuits. In this work, four thiol collectors (potassium ethyl xanthate (EX), sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (SN- 9), O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200), dianilino dithiophoshoric acid (DDA)) were chosen as model pollutants. The collector removal, mineralisation and byproduct formation were compared by sole O3 and O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation rate constants of thiol collectors by O3/UV185+254nm were 2~6 times higher than those by sole O3. The mineralisation of collectors was also remarkably enhanced by O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation efficiency by O3/UV185+254nm had the order: EX>SN-9>>Z- 200>DDA. The Z-200 and DDA were refractory flotation reagents. The degradation of thiol collectors caused the reduction of solution pH and the increase of ORP and conductivity. However, the O3/UV185+254nm achieved more evident changes of these parameters than sole O3. During the degradation of thiol collectors, less than 4% of total sulfur in collectors was emitted into air as CS2 and H2S. Compared to sole O3, the O3/UV185+254nm had additionally included UV185+254nm photolysis and O3/UV254nm, resulting in higher efficiency in removing collectors. The O3/UV185+254nm was an effective process in treating mineral flotation wastewaters containing organic reagents. An improved methodology is presented for assessing the economic feasibility and effectiveness of recycling MgO-C and Al2O3-MgO-C refractory bricks, which are widely used in the steelmaking industry. Since approximately 28 Mt of refractory bricks are discarded each year, it is logical to recycle them. When furnaces and ladles are relined, the spent refractory bricks become mixed up, and need to be sorted before recycling. This study examined the use of a hand-held X-ray fluorescence analyser (HH-XRF) to distinguish between spent oxide-based and oxide-carbon-based refractory materials, with special emphasis on spent MgO-C (MC) and Al2O3-MgO-C (AMC) bricks. HH-XRF analysis was conducted on 18 oxide-carbon refractory bricks as well as on MgO-chromite and bauxite-based refractories. X-ray diffraction, reflected light optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy were used to characterize the MgO-C and Al2O3-MgO-C bricks to confirm the accuracy of the HH-XRF analyses. This study also underlined the importance of calibrating the HH-XRF analyser for the refractory bricks to be sorted. The HH-XRF was successful in distinguishing between the different oxide-carbon-based refractory bricks both before and after cleaning. This result is important as it proves that HH-XRF provides a method whereby spent MC and AMC bricks can be sorted quickly and reliably.

Because of its superior properties, stainless steel has been widely used for many applications. Nonmetallic inclusions can influence the quality of stainless steel products. A set of samples was used to track the response of inclusion composition during processing of a heat of titanium-bearing 18% chromium steel, from deoxidation after decarburization, to the solidified slab. The oxide inclusions responded as expected to additions of deoxidizers and calcium treatment, changing from silica to alumina and spinels, and then to calcium aluminates. The samples confirmed that titanium nitride can nucleate on liquid calcium aluminate during steel solidification.
