The application of modifying factors to the Merensky Reef and UG2 Chromitite Layer has a number of challenging aspects as the deposits are tabular and consist of a number of separate geological entities that are grade bearing. The important aspects of the conversion include mineral holdings, dilution with grade bearing material, mining and geological losses, marginal cut offs and recoveries especially where open pit or weathered material is being considered. It is considered inappropriate to add material for dilution at zero grade as the associated material generally comes with an associated low grade. The Merensky Reef Is typically a pegmatoidal feldspathic pyroxenite with bounding chromitite layers. The Merensky Reef is senso stricto too narrow to be considered as a mineable entity and therefore any reserve must include material at low or marginal grades. This is further complicated as the typical mine cut or approach varies across a mine of project. This variation must be included in the mineral reserve conversion. The UG2 Chromitite Layer is typically lithologically bounded i.e. chromitite hosted. However, this adds interesting aspects particularly where leaders are intersected in the hangingwall. These can contribute to unstable hangingwall. It may be considered appropriate to include these in the mineral reserve. One of the overarching principles is that the reserve can be demonstrates to be feasible i.e. can be mined at a profit. Here aspects of a feasibility including infrastructure (power, water etc) needs to be properly considered. The paper will attempt to describe these and other relevant issues and highlight examples from experience together with proposed solutions.

Rock fall accidents continue to be the main cause of fatal and serious injuries in the mining industry. Although there has been an improvement in the FOG (falls of ground) related fatal and serious injuries over the past few years, the rate is still too high. New technology has made it possible to reduce this rate significantly. FOG accidents imply failure of the support system or the design of the support system in use. In this paper we deal with the latest technology available to assist the mines to reduce the rates of FOG related injuries and fatalities.

Introduction In South African metalliferous mines, stoping operations are largely confined to narrow, tabular orebodies making mechanization extremely difficult. Limited flexibility in terms of stope width has necessitated drilling by means of hand held, pneumatic rock drills at most of our operations. As the largest producer of platinum in the world, we drill in excess of forty million stope blast holes per annum. Cleaning of the broken ore is also done by conventional means—utilizing scrapers and scraper winches. Conventional methods such as these carry high costs in terms of risk exposure as well as labour intensity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a long hole stoping system suitable for the narrow platinum reefs. The new system had to be substantially safer and more cost effective than conventional mining. We selected a site that was conducive to mechanized mining and set out the parameters that we considered would meet our requirements. We then conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the conceptualized long hole stoping system in terms of specific goals. An analysis of the proposed system identified the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). One of the most critical goals was to be able to create a man-freestope. This would mitigate the safety risk associated with normal stoping operations, as well as the inefficiency cost previously referred to. Other challenges included setting targets for long hole accuracy, stoping width reduction and specific blasting system performance for long hole stoping. We also modelled a critical span that we considered to be inherently safe and to ensure hangingwall stability, throw-blastcleaning and overall system productivity. Anglo Platinum Research and Development and Sandvik Tamrock entered into an agreement for the supply of a specialized long hole-drilling machine. The system was implemented and tested by the mine with the support of the other participants. The results achieved met our expectations. It was demonstrated that with this method of mining it is possible to have a man-free/support-free stope face and to achieve a reduction in shaft head cost per ton whilst reducing dilution. Mine personnel and Tamrock carried out a full risk assessment on the drill rig before transporting underground. A further risk assessment was carried out when the machine was in position underground. Using complex thermal analysis methods, flotation concentrates were classified depending on what the organic and nonorganic carbon form is. The possibility of ultrafine particles of valuable components (noble metals and diamonds) extraction using physical actions of different genesis in the processing of ‘unconventional’ mineral raw materials is considered in the paper. Electromagnetic treatment is one of new technologies in the field of mineral processing. The features of the electromagnetic effect on substances include uniform heating throughout of the volume, high speed and low inertia of heating, as well as the possibility of selective heating. A selection of studies including gravity, flotation and extraction methods of enrichment using energy effects, as well as thermal analysis was conducted to establish the availability and possibility of extracting valuable components. Due to microwave and high-temperature exposure, minerals and gas-liquid inclusions are decremented, and crystal-chemical water is released, resulting in additional defects. As a result, self-cleaning of sulphide minerals from atoms of scattered gold occurs by distilling it into peripheral parts of grains and intergranular space, where ultradispersed individuals are formed. In this paper we develop a physics-based model for lining erosion in steel ladles. The model predicts the temperature evolution in the liquid slag, steel, refractory bricks, and outer steel shell of the ladle. The flow of slag and steel is due to forced convection induced by inert gas injection, vacuum treatment (extreme bubble expansion), natural convection, and waves caused by the gas stirring. The lining erosion takes place by dissolution of refractory elements into the steel or slag. The mass and heat transfer coefficients inside the ladle during gas stirring are modelled based on wall functions which take the distribution of wall shear velocities as a critical input. The wall shear velocities are obtained from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for a sample of scenarios, spanning out the operational space, and a model is developed using curve fitting. The model is capable of reproducing both thermal and erosion evolution well. Deviations between model predictions and industrial data are discussed. The model is fast and has been tested successfully in a ‘semi-online’ application. The model source code is available to the public at [https://github.com/SINTEF/refractorywear].

Waste dumps are widely used to discharge stripped mine wastes in open pit mining methods. As mining progresses, the height of the waste dumps will increase gradually, which may induce sliding failure once the height exceeds a critical value. Therefore, estimation of the maximum dumping height is crucial to the life-cycle use of a waste dump. However, published information about the maximum height of mine waste dumps are extremely rare. In this study, the maximum dumping height is estimated based on the strength-reduction technique by numerical simulations. The influences of dump geometry and properties on the maximum height are investigated. The results show that the maximum dump height decreases as the dump slope inclination angle α or the unit weight of dump materials γ increases, but decreases when the shear parameters of dump materials (cohesion c and internal friction angle ϕ) increase. The maximum height starts to increase with the ground inclination β when shear failure occurs at the interface between the dump and the base. Furthermore the effects of the dump width B, Young’s modulus E, and Poisson’s ratio μ of dump materials on the maximum height are almost insignificant. Good agreement was found between numerical results available in the literature and those obtained in this study.

Rock Engineers are required to design safe cost effective support systems and stoping layouts for their respective mines. As each stope has its own unique environment, continual re evaluation is required in all stopes to maximize extraction and achieve value from the support standard. Several longwall faces in India have collapsed due to adverse geological conditions and/or inadequate capacity of powered supports. Thus it is imperative to access the capacity of a powered support and its interaction at longwall faces of varying geomining conditions in advance with lots of confidence. To achieve this, an index has been developed to ascertain the front leg pressure (FLP) of chock-shield support and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) at longwall faces. The index called ?Longwall Face Stability Index? (LFSI) has been developed using statistics and Finite Element Modelling (FEM). The front leg pressure (FLP) and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) predicted from the LFSI are validated with the field monitored data from two longwall panels. In this study, an attempt is also made to incorporate various geomining conditions into the finite element models typical of longwall mining practice. The index has taken into account the wide variations of geomining parameters like thickness, young?s modulus and friction angle of main roof (small, large), coal type (soft, hard), powered support capacity, and depth of coal seam. Thus, LFSI can be thought of as an index representing combined effect of roof type, geomining conditions and powered support capacity.

Water plays a significant role in minerals processing; this is especially true in coal preparation where water-based beneficiation is widely accepted and consistently delivering sharp separation efficiencies and high product yields. Although wet processing is favoured, the substantial process water requirement may prove this impractical and unsustainable in some parts of the world. Many coal-rich regions (including South Africa) have experienced severe water shortages. Coupled with the effects of drought, some countries experience freezing winters from which problems related to frozen process water and machinery may arise. Hence coal preparation practices will soon have to adapt, irrespective of the technical and economic feasibility offered by the currently employed water-based methods. As a result, extensive research into the development of dry methods for effectively beneficiating coal has progressed. This review paper intends to provide a collection of the relevant information pertaining to dry coal processing globally, and aid in understanding the applicability, performance, success or failure thereof. The methods available for dry materials preparation, with special regard to those applicable for coal beneficiation, are detailed in terms of principle, applicability, limitations and performance. Dry coal beneficiation has potential to aid the current wet-based methods with some considerations to possible limitations set forth by coal geology, application, product specification, particle size distribution, moisture, efficiency, capacity and cost. These methods may be established in future, especially in the arctic, arid and under-developed regions through new plant installations, expansions and small mines processing. Insurers are hesitant to provide coverage for Open cast Pit side wall collapse, and even the consequent damage to plant and equipment in the pit as well as the resulting interference with the mining operations. After a general introduction to relevant principles of insurance, this paper addresses some of the major reasons for that reluctance based upon the authors? extensive claims experience, examines what limited coverage can still be obtained and looks to the future possibilities. Confidentiality of sources and examples referred to in this presentation is a natural imperative so that a bibliography is not provided but reference is made to relevant sample insurance policy wordings.

The conventional visualisation method of remote equipment is through the installation of one or more cameras on the machine, and sending a live feed to the operator’s flat display. However, the performance of the teleoperation can be enhanced using better visualisation through virtual reality (VR). This paper presents the process of the design and manufacturing of a robotic platform that will be used in the next phase of the project for a VR-assisted teleoperated excavator. The robot consists of a loading boom and arm arrangement installed on the undercarriage of a CAT300-9D. All hydraulic cylinders are replaced with electric actuators, and crawling motors are substituted by electric motors. The pieces of the boom and the arm, as well as the bucket were designed in Autodesk Inventor, and manufactured from aluminium sheets using a desktop and CNC machine. Parts are joined by pins and welding as needed. An Arduino-based control system is developed for the robot, and motor controllers are used to convert the power commands from the microcontroller to the high-amperage actuators. The control system is capable of communicating with a wireless Play Station controller to operate remotely. The manufactured robotic excavator is planned to be utilised in multiple autonomy research projects.

The Unki Platinum Mines concentrator, employing an MF2 circuit configuration which includes fully-autogenous primary milling of run-of-mine (ROM) ore, was commissioned in November 2010. The project was Anglo American Platinum?s first PGM concentrator in Zimbabwe and would form a significant contribution to the group?s platinum production. The project financials demonstrated that the project was operating-cost sensitive. After reviewing the metallurgical testwork, mineralogical examinations, and the history of similar operations, it became apparent that the Unki ore characteristics rendered it amenable to autogenous milling. The primary ball mill, structurally designed for 30 per cent steel load, could be operated at the required initial phase throughput with fully-autogenous primary milling, realizing savings in both power requirements and grinding media consumption. The original mill sizing had been done with fully-autogenous milling in mind, but allowing for flexibility and mitigation in case of varied mining fragmentation. Since attaining steady state, target grinds have been achieved. This paper looks at the Unki ore characterization programme, design considerations, and the operational and control philosophy for a successful comminution circuit, and discusses the design to produce a flexible, low opex, mitigated comminution and overall MF2 flowsheet that is easily expanded in line with the potential for optimum exploitation of the orebody.
