The Bureau of Mines studied the presplitting technique used for controlling overbreakage in the walls of a vertical shaft at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Littleville Dam project near Huntington, Mass. The periphery of the shaft, the dimensions of which were 16-1/2 feet wide by 21 feet long and 52 feet deep, was presplit (cracked) in the solid to a depth of 48 feet prior to full-depth sinking. Presplitting prevented overbreak in a fairly soft schist and provided sound self-supporting walls which required very little scaling.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on Fe-based alloys using Si and Al additions to reduce the Cr required for heat-resisting appli-cations. Part of this research is being done to evaluate alloys containing (8-10)Cr-(10-14)Ni-(0-8.5)Si-(0-4) Al to determine which of these alloys have austenitic structures, as well as fabrication properties and oxidation resistance sufficient to substitute for type 304 stainless steel. Based on initial results, an Fe-lOCr-11Ni-5Si alloy and an Fe-8Cr-13Ni-5Si alloy were selected for evaluation of oxidati.on, stress rupture, and tensile properties. Both alloys have oxidation resistance at 7000 and 8000 C that is better than that of type 304 stainless steel. The stress rupture strengths are less than that of type 304 stainless steel but significantly better than that of commercial heat-resisting steels with similar Cr contents. Yield strengths of the alloys were equivalent to that of type 304. Both alloys had high tensile strengths comparable to those of stainless steels that transform to martensite during straining (e.g., type 301). These alloys have weld-hot-cracking resistance comparable to that of type 304 stainless steel. This initial study shows that Si has potential as a substitute for Cr in stainless steels for heat-resisting applications.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. Mining activity began in colonial times with ironmaking operations scattered along the eastern seaboard. Iron furnaces and forges manufactured iron implements from bog iron ores using charcoal from the extensive forests as a fuel. Lead ores were mined in the Mississippi Valley and copper ores in the Lake Superior region. However, the real beginning of the American mining industry did not occur until the 19th century. The history of American mining is organized around three epochal events. The first was the discovery of gold in California in 1848, which marked the beginning of a period of apprenticeship in mining and metallurgical techniques. The second was the discovery of the fabulous Comstock Lode in western Nevada in 1859, which expanded mining throughout the Far West and led to large-scale underground mining and the development of smelting techniques for lead, silver, and copper ores. The third event was the building of a transcontinental rail-road system after the Civil War, which brought about the consolidation of the industry from a large number of independent mines, mills, and smelters into integrated operations run by large corporations. Thus developed the mining industry that today supplies the energy and critical materials for the great-est industrial complex the world has known.

Although the technique of diamond drilling was developed nearly 80 years ago, the use of this process as an aid to mining and other fields of engineering has increased greatly during the last decade , primarily as a result of the development of the cast -set bit , which now largely replaces the hand - set types , and of the use of bort instead of carbons . Since this transition to cast - set bits and bort diamond , many papers ( 1-14 ) have been written on the application of diamond drilling to various engineering problems . These papers contain , besides specification of the problems , some information on the labor and bit costs and a few data on drilling technique . These data , however , are subject to restricted interpretation owing to the large number of variables , which are not controlled in field drilling . Only one paper has come to the attention of the authors , namely , that by Sundberg and Lindqvist ( 16) , which reported a study of diamond drilling under controlled conditions . This paper was written early in the transition period, and the data and conclusions presented therein have had , without a doubt, considerable influence on the development of presentday diamond bits and In view of the fact that during the last 10 years thrilling procedure . have been new developments in diamond bits. and new applications of diamond drilling , a general program of research has been inaugurated to study the problems resulting from these changes .

More than 500 fires are now burning in abandoned coal waste banks and coal deposits in the United States. Once established, such fires can burn for decades, and extinguishing them by conventional methods such as surface sealing to exclude air, excavation to remove fuel, or flushing to cool the fire zone is usually difficult and always expensive. Burnout Control, a technique developed by the Bureau of Mines for the control of abandoned coal fires, involves the accelerated combustion of coal in place with total management of the heat and fumes produced. A burning waste bank or mine is placed under negative pressure relative to the atmosphere, and heat and combustion products are drawn from the combustion zone through an exhaust ventilation system. Heat produced appears as sensible heat in the exhaust, at temperatures as high as 1,0000 C (1,832° F), and could be recovered for the production of steam, hot water, process heat, or electricity. The Bureau's first held field demonstration of Burnout Control was at Calamity Hollow in Allegheny County, PA (near Pittsburgh). Calamity Hollow was the site of an underground mine in the 1900's and was surface mined in the 1940's. In the winter of 1961-62, a fire of undetermined origin was discovered in the exposed coal. In 1963, the Bureau constructed a trench barrier around the fire and a surface seal over the affected area. The fire was isolated but not completely extinguished. In 1979, when the Bureau began work on the Calamity Hollow Mine Fire Project to demonstrate controlled burnout, the fire was still smoldering on the hot side of the trench barrier. The project, which was begun in December 1979 and ended in July 1982, consisted of the design, construction, operation, and subsequent dismantling of a Burnout Control ventilation system. This report is the fifth in a five-part series that describes the Calamity Hollow Mine Fire Project. The first report, part 1, describes the design and construction of the field installation. Part 2 will present the results of a continuous 4-month burnout operation. (Because part 2 involves the analysis of a substantial body of data, it will not be published until after publication of parts 1, 3, 4, and 5.) Part 3 describes the instrumentation used to control and monitor the progress of the burnout operation. Parts 4 and 5 deal with the closeout phase of the field demonstration. Part 4 describes the procedure used to quench the fire, and this part (part 5) describes the final excavation and backfilling of the heated zones. The reports in this series document the Calamity Hollow controlled burnout demonstration which showed that (1) controlled in situ combustion is a feasible method for controlling underground fires in abandoned mines, (2) the resultant thermal exhaust output is sufficient for energy utilization, and (3) water injection-fume exhaustion is a potentially effective method for cooling large underground fire zones. Further investigations of both Burnout Control and the water-injection-fume exhaustion quenching procedure are planned.

The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively prospected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941. The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program. The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.

There are several well-recognized procedures for controlling exposure to hazardous atmospheres in industry. They include (a) substitution of less toxic material, (b) enclosure of processes, (c) wet methods, (d) local exhaust, (e) general ventilation, and (f) use of respiratory protective devices. In addition to their employment as a control measure in occupational exposures, respiratory protective devices also are essential in emergencies that may arise from failure or improper use of other control equipment. Respiratory protective devices usually are employed to supplement other methods of control, as temporary expedients, or when other methods are not readily applicable or practicable. It seems reasonable to assume, however, that where respirators are used consideration has been given to the factors involved and that the devices can provide satisfactory protection if used properly. Their use should not be arrived at simply by a process of elimination of other methods that are more difficult to apply.

The number of natural-gasoline plants has shown a consistent decline in recent years, but the total capacity has increased steadily. The number of completed plants, as determined by a survey as of January 1, 1932, amounted to 959. Previous surveys of January 1, 1928 and 1930 showed 1,155 and 1,035 plants, respectively. Of the total plants on January 1, 1932, 859 were operating and 100 were shut down, compared with 999 operating and 36 shut down on January 1, 1930. The material gain in the number of inoperative plants in the last two years was probably due to the severe decline in prices of 1931. The low prices of 1931, which were approximately 40 per cent below 1930, made it virtually impossible for the majority of the independent plants, or plants not owned by a large integrated company, to operate at a profit. Accordingly, the majority of the plants removed from the list in 1930 and 1931 were owned by companies which were engaged solely in the manufacture of natural gasoline. The total daily capacity of the plants on January 1, 1932, amounted to 11,387,000 gallons, an increase of 871,000 gallons, or 8 per cent, in the two years 1930 and 1931. That the total capacity of the plants has increased while the number of plants has declined is due to the fact that nearly all the plants constructed in the last five years have been large plants. During 1931 the average total daily capacity of the operating plants was approximately 10,600,000 gallons, while the average daily production amounted to 4,944,000 gallons. This indicates that the plants operated during 1931 at 47 per cent of their capacity, compared with 58 per cent in 1930 and 61 per cent in 1929. Although more plants have been dismantled in Oklahoma in recent years than in any other State, it continues to rank first in number of plants. The Bureau of Mines conducted an in-mine case study on two consecutive three-entry gate road systems designed in accordance with the stiff-yield pillar design concept. This Bureau study was conducted in order to further develop technology that will improve the health and safety aspects of longwall mining. Support loading and strata activity were monitored to determine the effects of retreat longwall mining on the gate road ground control system. Analyses of pillar stress and roof bolt loading histories revealed that headgate roof support elements ex-perienced cumulative loading throughout the life of the longwall panel. Tailgate pillar loadings had significantly different histories from the loading histories of the headgate pillars. Stress relief occurred in the tailgate pillars following the passage of the longwall face. More-over, the stiff-yield pillar design, with the abutment pillar placed adjacent to the working panel when part of the headgate system, provided effective ground control in that no major roof falls or roof problems were experienced in the headgate or tailgate systems during longwall mining.

An analysis of low-voltage shielded trailing cables is performed to develop a method for calculating the differences in operating costs between shielded and non-shielded cables. Two types of shield constructions are considered (SH-C and SH-D) for the three major underground coal mining methods. Data from laboratory and in-mine testing are presented in addition to an analysis of safety benefits. Recommendations for further investigations are proposed. Example calculations with sensitivity analyses are presented. Recommendations for further investigation include costs impact considerations.

The pegmatite investigations at the Rapid City, S. Dak., Experiment Station during; the pact 3 years have been primarily a study of recovering beryl from nonlithium-bearing pegmatite rock by continuous-testing methods. Beryl concentrates containing 25 to 88 percent beryl were produced from rock that ranged in beryl content from 0.1 to 2.5 percent. The beryl recovery ranged upward from 70 percent but averaged better than 80 percent. Although promising results have been obtained with flotation methods for upgrading these concentrates to standard specifications, additional work is needed to improve and simplify the procedure. In addition, it was demonstrated that several potentially useful coproducts could also be recovered from pegmatite rock. The principal coproducts were mica, feldspar, and quartz. A heavy-mineral product also was made from pegmatites containing tin, tantalum, and columbium. The recovery if these minerals in products meeting the specifications of the commercial users has been reserved for future study. The investigations also included studies on extraction of beryllium from both high-grade beryl and flotation concentrates of medium beryllium content. The procedure investigated consisted of sintering beryl or beryl flotation concentrates with limestone, acid curing the resulting sinter with sulfuric acid to dissolve the beryllium, and water leaching to extract the beryllium. Over 90 percent of the beryllium was extracted by this procedure. Most of the optimum conditions and quantities of reagents were determined for dissolving the beryllium. As aluminum and iron also were taken into solution by the acid, further research is needed on methods of recovering high-grade beryllium salts from the solutions containing these elements.

This study presents the economics of the hot-carbonate purification process for removing C02. It considers three variations of the process in order to meet the design specifications, which call for a feed-gas flow of 10 million standard cubic feet per hour (std.c.f.h.) with C02 inlet concentrations of 10, 20, and 30 percent and exit C02 values of 5, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.1 percent. Inlet pressure and temperature are 350 pounds per square inch [e] (p.s.i.g.) and 300° F., respectively. Estimated capital and operating costs are shown in the following to tabulations: [ ]

Lime is used extensively in the various industries. The National Lime Association in an excellent and recent bulletin lists 23 important in- dustries in which lime plays a vital role; and it thereby justifies the statement that "Lime is one of the most versatile and widely used reagents in the chemical and industrial world." There is, however, one application of this "universal" reagent which has not been mentioned. It is the use of lime in the flotation of ores. An appreciable percentage of the lime produc- tion is consumed by ore-dressing plants. The uses of lime throughout all the industries are more or less re- lated, but "lime" is a broad term; the varieties of lime are more mumerous than the limestones from which it is made, and its use involves a complicated technique. The interrelated application and growing importance of lime in flotation warrant this additional publication on the various "limes," with emphasis on those uses related to the function of lime in flotation. ཁྐྲ་ Lime in water treatment, cyaniding, and amalgamating will be men- tioned, after which its use in flotation will be taken up. This Bureau of Mines study, part of a broad program of research in air pollution related to minerals, was conducted to determine the nature and extent of the poisoning of catalysts when used to remove certain air pollutants from exhaust gases. The poisoning examined in this investigation occurs when leaded gasoline is used as a fuel for automotive engines. This research was conducted in cooperation with the Public Health Service. The smog in the Los Angeles area is attributed to the effect of radiant energy on the mixture of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides found in the atmosphere there. A large portion of the hydrocarbons is believed to originate in the exhaust gases of automobiles. To prevent the escape of these hydrocarbons into the atmosphere catalytic mufflers have been proposed. In principle, these are simple and nonmechanical, consisting of a vessel charged with a catalyst capable of destroying the exhaust hydrocarbons by catalyzing their oxidation. However, these catalysts are severely affected by the particulate matter, mainly in the form of lead sulfate (PbS04), lead oxysulfate (PbS04.Pb0), and Lead chlorobromide (Pb(Cl,Br)2), contained in the exhaust gas. Deposition of lead on the catalyst as PbS04, PbS04, PbS0, and Pb(Cl,Br)2 restricts catalytic activity. As a result,after 20,000 miles of operation the temperature necessary to achieve 50-percent conversion of isopentane in a mixture of 0.2 percent isopentane, 2 percent carbon monoxide and 4 percent oxygen, and the balance nitrogen at 10,000 hourly space velocity has risen from 400° C. to 500° C. even with a catalyst taken from the exit portion of the catalyst bed. The rest of the catalyst was more severely affected. Therefore, it would appear that operation for 20,000 miles is near the limit for a catalyst.

The galvanic corrosion properties of titanium in contact with commercially pure aluminum, copper, or type 302 stainless steel in some of the common organic acids were investigated. Acids used in these experiments were 10 percent formic, acetic, lactic, citric; 1 percent oxalic and tartaric; and 9 percent oxalic. Electrode-potential measurements and several types of galvanic couple experiments were carried out. Solutions were aerated by three methods: Flow of air, flow of helium, and natural aeration. Work was done at 35° C. with couples consisting of equal areas of the 2 metals. Titanium was resistant to corrosion in most of the organic acids studied, whether alone or in contact with a dissimilar metal. However, titanium coupled with aluminum did corrode in 1- and 9-percent oxalic acid solutions. Contact with titanium usually caused aluminum to corrode by galvanic action. Copper was subject to galvanic attack in 10-percent acetic acid with a flow of air. Contact with aluminum to some solutions in which titanium is ordinarily inert and noble with respect to aluminum caused titanium to corrode

The Bureau of Mines issued three Information Circulars on marble many years ago (5), (6), (7).2/ They have long been out of print; furthermore, conditions have changed considerably in the industry in succeeding years. A presentation of current data is therefore desirable. This report furnishes general information on marble, including its properties, distribution of domestic and foreign deposits, methods and equipment used in quarrying and milling, economic and marketing problems, and recent advances in marble technology. INTRODUCTION Most marbles are crystallized limestone. The term "marble" is derived from a Greek word meaning to sparkle or flash, because the calcite crystals in marble sparkle as they reflect light. The word "marble" is employed frequently to mean a small ball used in the game of marbles with which nearly every child is familiar. Although the little spheres were originally of marble, few of those made in recent years contain that material; nevertheless, the expression "playing marbles" has persisted.

Ignition of hybrid coal dust - methane - air mixtures by hot- turbulent - pulsedgas jets was investigated . The turbulent jets were generated by explosions in a primary chamber of stoichiometric mixtures of methane , oxygen , and nitrogen . The hot - gas ignition apparatus provided an adjunct means of testing , on a small scale , the type of ignition that exists in large - scale galleries or in coal mines . = coal particle The temperature Ignition variables were channel diameter , channel length , size , fuel concentration , and temperature of the hot - gas jet . of the hot jet was varied by changing the oxygen indices ( OI ) of the primary explosion mixtures . Coal dust having approximately 37 percent volatile matter was used . 02 O2ટ + N₂ The hybrid coal dust - methane - air mixtures required higher jet temperatures ( higher oxygen indices ) for ignition than the single fuel component methane - air mixtures . Methane in air concentrations less than the lower flammable limit of methane could be ignited in the presence of coal dust if the jet temperatures were increased . A specific explosion transmission ( ignitability ) curve existed for each coal dust concentration . The total fuel concentrations at the lower limit of each ignition curve was always close to or greater than stoichiometric , indicating that not all the coal dust was involved in the ignition .
