Geothermal plants are competitive with conventional units. A geothermal plant can produce electric energy for 6.70 mills per kwhr, compared with 6.96 mills for coal, 6.74 mills for oil, and 7.04 mills for gas. These costs include fixed and variable charges. Potential for geothermal power exists in the Western United States, Alaska, and possibly Hawaii. Assuming that the current downward trend in cost per kilowatt of coal will cease and that the relative cost of gas and oil, already trending upward, may rise considerably more, geothermal energy will be utilized where available, in producing electric energy. It will be used in California first because it is directly competitive with gas-and oil-fired installations there. A long-term appraisal is difficult because little is known about the sources of geothermal power and the electric generating capacity which the steam fields will support. However, a market for geothermal steam-generated electricity exists within the Western States.

The fluorite, deposit discussed herein occurs on a property known as the Snowball and comprises five contiguous mining claims in Maricopa County, Ariz. Attention of the Bureau was first directed to this property early in 1944 through .a request by D. B. Powell, original locator; to investigate his property as a possible source of fluorite and one that might 'Warrant exploration by the Bureau. The property was examined by two Bureau engineers, Thomas C. Denton and Geo. W. Huseman. It was decided to investigate the occurrence further by trenching, sampling, and diamond drilling. Work began on May 15, 194. Preparatory work, trenching and surface sampling, was supervised by Geo. W. Huseman. Drilling was in charge of R. M. Grantham. The project was completed August 8, 1944.

This publication has been prepared to supply manufacturers and industrial users a listing of mobile diesel-powered equipment and subassemblies approved and certified by the Bureau of Mines for use in noncoal mines. Testing of diesel-powered equipment is one phase of the Bureau's program of health and safety that concerns approval of electrical and diesel equipment designed to prevent explosions, fires, shocks, or toxic hazards in underground mines, when such equipment is used and maintained properly. Manufacturers submit machinery and component parts to the Bureau for study of their design, safety features, and use. Equipment must pass exacting tests and must meet strict requirements established through research and experience and listed in the Bureau's permissible schedules before the Bureau approves it as permissible for safe use in mines.

This pamphlet and the enclosed video describe a safe, effective and economical method for removing dust from work clothes. Background Information Dusty work clothes can increase a worker’s exposure to respirable dust. Respirable dust is usually considered to be particles having an aerodynamic diameter of 10 microns or less and able to enter and deposit in the gas-exchange region of the human lung. A former U.S. Bureau of Mines report documented a 10-fold increase in worker dust exposure on a number of separate occasions from dusty work clothes.* It was found that once clothes become contaminated, they are a continual dust source until cleaned. The only MSHA approved method to clean work clothes requires a HEPA-filter vacuuming system which is very time consuming and difficult to perform effectively. Therefore, most workers use a single air hose (not MSHA approved) which can elevate dust levels for the worker, co-workers, and the work environment. A substantial amount of engineering technology has been developed that, when applied, can significantly lower respirable dust exposures of workers at mineral processing plants. But even with these improvements, some workers continue to exceed their permissible exposure limit. Elevated exposures increase the potential for developing debilitating or fatal lung diseases. ?e clothes cleaning method described within is an example of a continuing effort to reduce the potential for developing these lung diseases. This paper describes the mining methods and operating costs for 1938 at the South Burns shaft, situated in the Cripple Creek district, Colorado. The shaft is operated by Golden Conqueror Mines, Inc., through which portions of the properties of the Acacia Cold Mining Co., The Free Coinage Gold Mining Co., and The United Gold Mines Co. are worked under lease. During 1938, 30,773.61 dry tons of ore averaging $9.59 in gold per ton was mined. Of this, 10,138.439 tons averaging $10.65 per ton was produced on company account, and 20,635.171 tons averaging $9.05 per ton was produced by "split-check" lessees.

This paper discusses prospecting for lode gold and lists the principal lags and. regulations pertaining to locating; lode claims on public lands. It is a preprint of a part of a bulletin being prepared by the United States Bureau o Mines entitled "Equipping, Developing and Operating Small Gold Mines". The increased interest in gold mining manifested during the past few years (1932-1935) bas stimulated prospecting. Many adventurers have taken to the field to search for now gold deposits. A. large percentage of them have had no previous experience in prospecting for lode gold; this paper has been written with the tope that it might assist these newcomers.

The paramount importance of water to life of all forms on the earth is too well known to require elaboration in this brief paper. It has repeatedly been termed the most valuable of all our mineral resources. Its importance is justifiably recognized in the extensive areas covering the earth which receive sufficient rainfall to sustain a relatively luxuriant vegetation; but in those areas where rainfall is insufficient to support anything but a relatively meager plant growth, the location of a water supply and its development become of even more vital interest to those attempting to obtain a living from the soil. Geological investigations concerning the water supply of the United States have been most extensive, important work having been accomplished by Federal, State, and local governments and by private enterprise. A casual examination of the titles of the 739 Water-Supply Papers published by the United States Geological Survey3/ alone testifies 'to the vital nature of our water resources and the extensive work that has been done on them.

"Abstract — The use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines is controversial because the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH ) regards ""wholediesel exhaust"" as ""a potential occupational carcinogen."" Threshold limit values (TLVs ) are recommended for the gaseous pollutants CO, CO2, NO, NO2, SO2 and some hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, however, no TLV recommended for diesel exhaust aerosols (DEA) nor is there a standard method for sample these aerosols.The University of Minnesota and the USBM have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) that utilizes size selective, partial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were conducted in underground coal mines that used diesel equipment. The objective of this report is to present these data and to assess the impact of diesel face haulage equipment on mine a quality.Air quality data were collected in four underground coal mines. The mines used continuous miners and diesel haulage equipment. Daily samples were collected at the section intake, haulage way and on haulage vehicles. Both full- and partial-shift samples were collected using a variety of aerosol instruments. These included the PDEAS and the micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) that sample the mine aerosol diesel exhaust fraction. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust CO,CO2, NO, NC, and SO2. These measurements were made by either collecting bag samples for subsequent gas analysis or by Palmes dosimeters.Concentrations of CO, CO2, NO, NO2 and SO2 were well below regulated levels. The mine average DEA concentration determined by the PDEAS in the haulageway for the three mines surveyed was 0.79 mg/m4, with a standard deviation of 0.19 mg/m3 DEA contributed 65% of the respirable aerosol, at this location. These results were the same as the mean DEA concentrations calculated from size distribution measurements obtained using the MOUDI. This was 0.78 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 022 mg/m3."

The land-pebble district of Florida, which in 1928 supplied 96.7 per cent of the phosphate production of that State and 82 per cent of the domestic requirements of the United States, is centered in Polk and Hillsboro Counties about 30 miles east of Tampa The deposits are unconsolidated sediments occurring as beds of phosphate matrix overlain by a mantle of barren sands and clays. The matrix consists of a mixture of Sand (quartz grains), clay, and phosphate rock in which the coarsest sand is much finer than the coarsest phosphate; that is, the sand is segregated in the fine material. Before the introduction of classifiers the concentration consisted of log washing, and screening at about 20-mesh, which was usually the finest size that could be taken to maintain commercial grade, 66 per cent B. P. L. (bone phosphate of limey or more. When classifiers were introduced some of the fines that had escaped at the head of the washery and some of the minus 20-mesh material isolated during the rushing and formerly lost supplied the feed.

Seven degasification wells have been completed in the Pittsburgh coalbed at the new Emerald mine near Waynesburg, Pa. Funding was provided by the Bureau of Mines to perform stimulation treatments on five of the wells, to show that this is a feasible and economical means of degasifying part of a coalbed. The seven wells ranged in depth from 590 to 910 feet. Stimulation treatments used 25,260 to 42,660 gallons of foam and 7,400 to 12,800 pounds of 20/40-mesh prop sand. Pumping rates were 10.8 to 11.6 bbl/min and treating pressures were from 1,050 to 1,600 psig. On the day following stimulation, gas production ranged from a few hundred cubic feet per day to more than 100,000 cu ft/day.

"The need for spodumene as a source of lithia for war purposes led to the exploitation of the Edison pegmatite deposit 1-1/2 miles southeast of Keystone, S. Dak. The operation was conducted during 1943 and 1944 by the Lor Mining Co., Rapid City, S. Dak. Spodumene concentrates in the ratio of 15:1 were recovered by hand picking from a sorting belt. This method was expensive and wasteful of spodumene, owing to the small size of the crystals.Data4/ obtained by the Bureau of Mines indicates that blunging with hydroflouric acid or sodium hydroxide is a prerequisite to selective flotation. Results of tests by Denver Equipment Co., Denver, Colo., indicate that economic recoveries can be obtained in an alkaline circuit after desliming.At the request of the Lor Mining Co., K. L. Erickson, metallurgical engineer, was permitted to work in the pegmatite research laboratory to verify previous investigations and to determine problems that might be involved in commercial milling. The ensuing investigation indicated that electrolytes in the mill water produced a profound inhibiting action on the flotation of Edison spodumone.An investigation of mill water from various sources showed that some waters are suitable for the process and others are not. Subsequent testing showed that all of the available waters are suitable after treatment. The flotation of the Edison spodumene in an alkaline circuit after desliming and using oleic acid as collector is efficient and economical when the water does not contain impurities.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B.Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches arc under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.As the work was of a practical nature, samples from possible mill-water sources in the southern Black Hills were obtained, and commercial softening and demineralizing methods were investigated. Data on various waters tested are given in table 1."

A new prototype ionization-attachment fire detector was developed by the Bureau of Mines for detecting combustion-generated submicrometer particulates. It is much more sensitive than the conventional ionization smoke detector, and it has the following added features: 1. A primary charging current of unipolar air ions is generated by a gold-coated, radioactive center electrode of a cylindrical diode. 2. Submicrometer particulates are flowed axially through the unipolar cloud where they acquire charge. The charged particles impinge upon a third electrode, located downstream, resulting in a current which is directly proportional to the particulate concentration. 3. Additional electrodes analyze the particulates in terms of their mobility and thus determine their size distribution. 4. A filter and cyclone assembly protect the ionization chamber against ambient dust. An analysis of conventional ionization smoke detector performance is also presented in terms of source strength, chamber geometry, and applied potential.

This report contains Bureau of Mines routine crude-oil analyses of 20 samples from5 areas on the arctic slope of Alaska. Two samples were condensates from the South Barrow gasfield, Barrow Lakes area. The remaining 18 samples were crude oils from the following areas: Barrow Lakes, 1 seepage sample; Umiat, 10 well samples; Cape Simpson, 1 seepage sample and 3 well samples; Fish Creek, 2 well samples; and Wolf Creek, I well sample. Table 1 summarizes information on the origin of the crude-oil samples, and table 2 summarizes characteristics of the samples. Item numbers in both tables correspond to item numbers of the analyses at the end of this report, and the samples are referred to by these numbers throughout the text.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. This report describes the results of Bureau of Mines laboratory and preliminary field tests on a rock bolt of helical shape. The flexible construction allows the bolt to maintain a more stable load level than is possible with a straight bolt. Bolt load changes resulting from anchor slippage, blasting shock, or changes in mine geometry with mining advance are minimized. Preliminary field tests were performed at the Kaiser Steel York Canyon mine where the load changes of straight and helical bolts were measured using a vibrating-wire load gage. The field tests were performed to establish the viability of the concept of a helical bolt. The practical usefulness in terms of performance and economics remains to be shown. The change in bolt load for the flexible bolts was one-third that for the straight bolts. There were no malfunctions of the gage, and the bolts maintained a more uniform load than the straight bolts used as controls.

"INTRODUCTION Toxic gases in the products from the detonation of explosives are one of the hazards in blasting underground. Investigations by the Bureau of Mines 4/5/ have shown that the oxygen balance of the explosive is an important factor in the control of toxic gases. This balance is considered in determining the composition of modern metal-mining explosives for blasting underground, and application of the concept has reduced the volume of toxic gases generated.The chemical nature of the material being blasted also influences the composition of the toxic gases produced. Under some conditions of blasting in massive pryrite, unsafe concentrations of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide have been found.Experiments with the O-J apparatus 8/ have shown that there is an increase in the volume of carbon monoxide in the gaseous products when permissible explosives are detonated in contact with coal dust. Thus, reactive materials of a reducing nature adjacent to explosives loaded in drill holes may decrease the effective oxygen balance of the explosive and cause the volume of toxic gases to increase.Several blasting accessories of reducing nature have been introduced recently for use in coal or metal mines or tunnels. In practice these are loaded adjacent to the explosive where conditions favor reaction with the products of detonation. The effects of this loading on the gaseous products obtained from the shot are indicated in this report. Broad consideration was not given the efficiency, usefulness, or over-all safety of these devices, but the practical significance of the hazard resulting from increased volume of carbon monoxide is discussed."

This publication by the Federal Bureau of Mines contains the free-swelling indexes for 2,812 samples of coal received from January 26, 1948, to July 15, 1957, and the Hardgrove grindability indexes for 2,339 samples of coal received from June 23, 1947, to July 15, 1957. These data consist of the origin of the sample, bed name, and analysis. Summaries show the high, low, and average values for each bed. The free-swelling index is a relative measure of the caking properties of a coal when burned on a grate, and the Hardgrove grindability index is used to estimate the relative ease of grinding coals. Development and standardization of these test procedures were at a much later date than those for the more familiar tests, such as proximate and ultimate analyses and calorific value determinations. The newer tests are valuable in supplying supplemental information, particularly for assisting in evaluating coals used in certain types of combustion processes.4/ Data from such tests are important to designers of burning equipment, operating engineers, and purchasing agents. Data from these newer tests are scarce and scattered through a number of publications. Special projects were started to determine the free-swelling and grindability indexes, in addition to the regular analyses on the tipple samples collected by Bureau engineers. Since the start of these special projects, all the coal fields of commercial importance have been adequately covered in the sampling program.

The coking time has considerable influence on the throughput of a coke oven, and for this reason a large number of papers dealing with the relationship between coking time and the different operating variables have been published. Although all factors known to influence the coking time have been studied, agreement has not been reached on several questions.2/3 Therefore, it appears worthwhile to evaluate any data that become available during investigations of the carbonizing properties of various coals and coal blends. Because it is expected that reports covering several different phases of this problem will be forthcoming as additional data-become available, the following study of the relationship between coking time and bulk density represents a report of progress on the overall investigation of factors influencing the coking time in slot-type ovens. The practice of including coarse coal in the blend going to the ovens to obtain increased bulk densities is well known. Similar increases have been realized by adding small quantities of oil to the coal mix. Although it would appear that such procedures provide inexpensive methods for increasing the capacity of existing coke-oven installations, Ramsburg and McGurl4/ point out that this increase is possible only if the additional coal can be carbonized in the same coking time as regularly employed without using abnormally high flue temperatures. This statement is in substantial-agreement with the position of Auvil and others5/ and implies that any change in bulk density may be accompanied by a corresponding change in coking time. On the other hand, a recent review of proposed methods for calculating the time required for carbonization6/ includes a number of equations that completely ignore the effects of variations in bulk density.

Alluvial cassiterite concentrations are widespread in river gravel and high level terraces within the Ray River watershed. The area lies in unglaciated terrain of Alaska's northern interior. Cassiterite originates from several calc-alkaline plutons of the Ruby batholith. Extensional stresses resulted in graben-like Tertiary basins that were flooded by a 200 ft thick section of mid-to late- Tertiary basalt flows. Basalt blocked local drainages, and 50- to 100-ft of terrace gravel was eventually deposited on top of the flows. Further downwarping and eventual fluvial downcutting of the flows resulted in cycles of accelerated sediment transport, deposition, and reconcentration. Repeated erosional cycles concentrated heavy minerals and resulted in development of tin placers. Preliminary resource estimates of contained tin in Recent alluvium range from 62 to as much as 172 million lbs-Sn in 300 million yd3. Grade of about 90% of the gravels is estimated to range between 0.2- to 0.5- lbs-Sn/yd3. Associated gold and rare earth elements (REE) in monazite and xenotime may be recoverable. Most of the tin is considered a subeconomic inferred resource, though, at least some of the gravels contain 2-to 6-lbs-sn/yd3. Estimates are projected on the basis of surface sampling and several auger drill holes and are provided for the purpose of land-use management planning.
