"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThis is one of a series of reports describing investigations within the Missouri River Basin in Montana conducted by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide basic information to agencies of the Department of Interior and others concerned with the planning of power and other water developments in the basin. This report contains only such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. Special precautions have been taken not to reveal any information or data that are considered confidential.The field investigations for this report were made during the summer of 1949. Virtually all known metallic mineral deposits in the county and same nonmetallic (industrial) mineral deposits were investigated. Most of the mines and prospects have been inactive for many years. The old underground workings generally are only partly accessible; many are entirely inaccessible. Most of the mining claims were located many years ago, and a considerable number were patented. Many claims were abandoned; others were relocated. Nimes and ownerships often have changed. Because of such conditions, much of the information on most of the mines and prospects necessarily has been obtained from available Federal and State publications, private geologists' and engineers' reports, and from owners and local residents.Metal mining in Cascade County, Mont., has been confined mainly to the silver-lead-zinc deposits in the Montana (Neihart) and Barker districts in the southeastern part of the county. The Neihart district has yielded by far the greater part of the county's metal output. The mines generally have been operated intermittently, largely because of fluctuating or low silver and base metal prices."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents a review and evaluation of existing and new backfilling materials and methods for their applicability to the problem of gate road stress reduction in deep retreat longwall coal mines. Candidate backfill materials include pulverized coal combustion fly ash, flue gas desulfurization, and fluidized bed combustion by-products from coal-fired electric power generation plants. Properties of both backfill and its component materials are presented, with particular emphasis on the unconfined compressive strength and elastic modulus of backfill mixtures. Hydraulic mix designs discussed in this report include high-water content slurry and low-water content paste fills. Three gate road stress-transfer-modification concepts are proposed to reduce abutment stresses in gate road systems. The first concept, packwalling, involves packwall construction behind the headgate shield inby the face and adjacent to the headgate pillars. The second concept, gob-filling, involves infilling a strip of gob inset from and parallel to the headgate using paste injection methods patterned after a technology recently developed in Europe. In the third concept, entry-filling, slurry fill methods are used to fill abandoned gate roads and crosscut entries inby the face.

Silica, the world's most abundant mineral compound, is composed of the two commonest elements - oxygen and silicon. In addition to being the life-giving constituent of the atmosphere and the major element in the waters of the earth, oxygen comprises almost half of all known terrestrial matter and occurs combined with most of the other ninety-odd elements in the solid crust of the earth; however, a large proportion of the oxygen is combined with silicon. Silicon is second only to oxygen in abundance in nature and constitutes more than one-fourth of all known terrestrial matter. This paper describing the mining practices at the Tintic Standard mine is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. In the preparation of this paper each subject has been presented by the engineer in charge. L. R. Dobbs wrote the part pertaining to tae technique of square-set mining, J. M. Snow the part on geology, and M. D. Paine, the part on ventilation. All of the drawings are the work of H. W. Waterfield of the engineering department. The statistics of the Tintic district ware prepared by A. G. MacKenzie. Each writer has attempted to show the difficulties that arise in operating and the practices used to overcome them.

This report describes a new method of weighing based upon observing the apparent weight of an object ill two separate pure gases. The method is presented in terms of experimental data which prove its soundness, but does not attempt to show the maximum accuracy possible with this technique. The new method incorporates the underlying principle that the apparent weight of an object is a linear function of the density of the atmosphere in which the object is weighed. The coefficients of this linear function are the true mass and volume of the object. From this functional relationship the true mass and volume of the object may be determined.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ No reports were made on motor gasolines Bold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 6/The present report presents analytical data for 1,499 samples, representing the products of approximately 105 companies. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gaso¬line are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for these analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows; Regular-price, 872 samples, 266 items, and 83 brands; -premium-price, 584 samples, 217 items, and 72 brands; third-grade, 43 samples, 32 items, and 21 brands. According to contemporary psychophysical theory, the relationship between the strength of a perceived sensation (S) and the intensity of a physical stimulus (1) is best expressed by a power relationship.(1) S=kln (1) This psychophysical principle has been applied to many practical problems, including the development of scales or guidelines for effective temperature, loudness, brightness, and ratings of perceived exertion. Based on the results of a number of experiments using a variety of scaling methods and a number of different muscle groups, the pooled estimate of the exponent for muscular effort and force is 1.7.(2) When applying this principle to work situations, it is assumed that individuals are capable and willing to consistently identify a specified level of perceived sensation (S). For manual materials handling tasks, this specified level is usually the maximum acceptable weight or maximum acceptable force. These phrases are defined by the instructions given to the test subject:(3) You are to work on an incentive basis, working as hard as you can without straining yourself or becoming unusually tired, weakened, overheated, or out of breath. If the task involves lifting, the experiment measures the maximum acceptable weight of lift. Similarly, there are maximum acceptable weights for lowering and carrying. Such tests are isoinertial in nature; however, in contrast to the tests described in Chapter 3, they are typically used to test submaximal, repetitive handling capabilities. Data are also available for pushing and pulling. These are reported as maximum acceptable forces and include data for initial as well as sustained pulling or pushing. Why Use Psychophysical Methods? Snook identified several advantages and disadvantages to using psychophysical methods for determining maximum acceptable weights.(4) The advantages include: • Realistic simulation of industrial work (face validity); • Ability to study intermittent tasks (physiological steady state not required); • Results are consistent with the industrial engineering concept of "a fair day's work for a fair day's pay"; • Results are reproducible; and • Results appear to be related to low-back pain (content validity).

The annual reports of the research and technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the occurrence, properties, mining preparation, and uses of coal, of which the present report is the seventh,4/ are intended to be brief summaries of progress. They are guides to the current work and publications of the Bureau but do not replace the more complete reports published by individuals and groups of workers on specific problems. The annual reports present the results of tests, often in advance of publication in other forms, but original contributions in research are reserved for initial publication by their authors. A survey of the accomplishments of the Bureau in research and technologic work on coal during the 5 year period 1935-40 has been made available in the form of a bibliography.5/ This supplements a similar bibliography on this subject that covers the first 25 years of the Bureau, 1910-35.6/

In the method used in the Health Branch of the Bureau of Mines for petro-graphic identification of the minerals in a rock, the sample is crushed, ground to a fine powder in a mortar, the powder is put on a slide, a drop of index oil and a cover slip are added, and the slide is ready for examination. The rock should be ground fine enough so that most of the particles consist of only one mineral, otherwise identification is difficult. Finally, the amounts of the minerals present in the sample are estimated to the nearest 5 or 10 percent. When quartz grains are mixed with some claylike minerals) of which by far the most common example is quartz and kaolinite in a shale, grinding in a mortar does not always separate the quartz from the kaolinite; instead, the quartz grains become coated with the kaolinite and are not visible, even after careful search. Talc acts Similarly, but muscovite and pyrophyllite do not. In evaluating the possible silicosis hazard of breathing dust from a shale, it is essential to be able to see and identify all of the quartz grains, as the other minerals present are relatively innocuous.

As part of a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR), with input from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphogypsum to sulfur is being investigated. The proposed process incorporates the thermal reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide (CaS) and a hydrometallurgical treatment to convert calcium sulfide to sulfur (S°). The research described herein is focused on the latter half of the process. It was demonstrated that calcium sulfide could be converted to ammonium bisulfide (NH4SH), and that ammonium bisulfide could be oxidized by air in the presence of a catalyst, to elemental sulfur, which was adsorbed on the catalyst. Two methods for recovering sulfur from the catalyst were developed: (1) thermal treatment to volatilize sulfur, and (2) leaching the sulfur from the catalyst with liquid anhydrous ammonia. Over 90 pct of the sulfur adsorbed on activated carbon (the catalyst) was recovered by both methods. Based upon the encouraging laboratory investigations, a hydrometallurgical scheme was proposed for the overall conversion of calcium sulfide to elemental sulfur.

This report reviews and analyzes, by a simple analytical and logical reasoning, the conventional methods of reserve computations of mineral deposits described in various domestic and foreign publications. It brings together, formulates, and evaluates the principles underlying interpretation of exploration data; and ties such principles to the proposed classification of methods. The material is discussed in sufficient detail to allow general application.

The Waukon iron deposit comprises about 210 acres situated 2-1/2 miles north of Waukon, in Allamakee County, northeastern Iowa. The deposits have been exploited intermittently since 1899 and have produced about 67,000 tons of concentrated iron ore. From January to May 1943, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposit to determine the extent of the ore-bearing material and its amenability to concentration, Seventy-one test pits were sunk. Those that indicated are of a grade high enough to warrant concentration tests were sampled. Average grade of ore was indicated to be 37.02 percent iron and 27.78 percent silica on a dry basis. Beneficiation tests indicated that the percentage of recovery might be relatively low.

Under a very high vacuum of 10-8 torr the transfer of terrestrial mineral beneficiation methods to the vacuum ambient of extraterrestrial locations such as the lunar surface was investigated. In the size range for the electro-static and magnetic separation of ores (minus 35 plus 150 mesh) there is no adhesion of particles produced by crushing and grinding due to the limited contact area, and for repeated contacts area size has a frequency of occurrence in accordance to the normal law. The photoelectric effect which is successful in separating a few minerals in an air ambient has a wider application in a vacuum, while the lack of air viscosity and sound transmission provides for high feed velocities and the adaptation of particle vibration to dispersion and grinding. Contact electrification is reversible upon return to atmosphere.

The effectiveness of 0.01 pct. molybdenum, as ammonium molybdate impregnated on coal, on the hydrogenation of a high-volatile bituminous C coal at 8,000 p.s.i.g. and 460° to 480° C. has been studied in a pilot plant by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Under these conditions, the Bureau obtained 98 to 99 pct. conversion5/ of coal to liquids and gases at throughputs of 29 to 101 lb. of m.a.f. coal per cubic foot of reaction space per hour. At 460° C. the indicated yield of oil ranged from 63 pct. (based on m.a.f. coal) at a throughput of 35 lb./c.f.h. (pounds per cubic foot per hour) to 68.5 pct. at a throughput of 58 lb./c.f.h., and the yield of gaseous hydro-carbons ranged from 25.5 to 19 pct. at the same throughputs. The maximum measured yield of oil boiling under 325° C. was 47 pct.

The Bureau of Mines has upgraded high-iron domestic chromite concentrates by a carbonyl process. The upgraded chromite concentrates show as much as 10 wt pct higher Cr203 content and up to a threefold in-crease in the Cr:Fe ratio, compared with the starting concentrates. The high-iron chromites were first reduced to convert the iron oxides to the metal, and then treated with CO at elevated pressures and low temperatures to convert part of the metallic iron fraction to iron pentacarbonyl. Carbonylation was accelerated by the addition of H2S in small quantities. The iron pentacarbonyl was extricated from the con-centrate in the pressure reactor during carbonylation by a CO sweep through a pressure-reducing valve and passed through a decomposer at atmospheric pressure to convert it back to iron metal and CO. CO pres-sure, temperature, promoter trends, and other factors enhancing iron pentacarbonyl formation are presented.

The prevention of fires and explosions involving the combustibles and oxidants likely to be found in flight vehicles requires a knowledge of the flammability and related characteristics of these materials. This circular is a compilation of the available charactersilics data for a series of combustibles and oxidants of current interest. Vapor pressure data are presented for fluorine, oxygen, chlorine trifluoride, nitrogen tetroxide, nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide, ethylene oxide, hydrogen, ammonia, pentaborane, unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine, monomethylhydrazine, hydrazine, and a series of hydro-carbons including decalin, tetralin, bicyclohexyl and other high-density fuels. In addition, flammability characteristics diagrams are included for each of the fuels in contact with air and, where available, other oxidants (for example, oxygen and nitrogen tetroxide). To assist in understanding these data, sections on definitions and theory and applications have been included. Each section is complete in itself and can be used separately. For example, a reader who is familiar with the general theory of combustion and detonation may find the data sections more useful than the definitions and theory and the application sections. However, since pertinent data are included in these sections, they should also prove useful to the experienced engineer interested in preventing fires and explosions.

The manufacture of lime is one of the oldest industries. Plants are distributed widely and furnish an essential raw material for numerous industries. The use of lime by the building trades, in agriculture, and in hundreds of manufacturing and chemical processes has created demands for a large production and has necessitated exhaustive research on methods of manufacture and uses. The bibliography of lime is an extensive one, but for the most part each publication has dealt with only certain operations. The purpose of this paper is to present a general picture of the industry as a whole. The abundant literature has been abstracted and quoted freely, and the National Lime Association has rendered valuable assistance in furnishing data for certain sections. Publications containing more detailed information on the various branches of the industry are referred to in the footnotes and in the bibliography.

To initiate this project a critical evaluation of the pre-sent phosphate mining industry in the Western phosphate field was conducted. Mines were visited, mine operators were interviewed and pertinent literature studied. Three phosphate mining enterprises were reviewed and mining cost estimates prepared. The report discusses the present state of phosphate processing, rock alteration and location. New ideas and concepts are proposed to improve the recovery of phosphate rock from the Phosphoria formation. The report evaluates two variations to the present phosphate open pit mining methods, which were developed to improve the economics of mining phosphate and to better accomplish necessary reclamation and accelerate the time for environmental recovery. A material handling system using conveyor haulage will eliminate the need for trucks. Terrace haulback utilizes safety benches to haul and dispose of waste in the mined out pit. Ore will be removed from the pit via an inclined, cable-supported mobile conveyor.
