Workers exposed to vibrating hand tools are at risk of developing symptoms such as cold-induced vasospasms, loss of tactile sensitivity, and loss of grip strength in the fingers and hands. These symptoms are known collectively as vibration white finger (VWF) or hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Symptoms of VWF or HAVS are in part due to repeated and prolonged peripheral vasoconstriction[1, 2]. The reduction in blood flow that occurs with vasoconstriction can result in oxygen deprivation (hypoxia) in soft tissues, such as nerves and muscle, and lead to functional and structural changes in these tissues. The present study examined muscle tissue to determine if vibration-induced changes in transcript levels and protein concentrations result in enhanced vasoconstriction and hypoxia. Manual dexterity was also assessed intermittently to determine if vibration-induced changes in cellular factors are accompanied by performance deficits. Methods An animal model was developed to study the biological and functional changes that occur in response to repeated segmental vibration exposures. In this model, the right paw of intact rats was exposed to a platform vibrated at a frequency 250 Hz and amplitude of 49 m/s2 to simulate the vibration characteristics of hand-held grinders. Three groups of 8 rats each were studied: a vibration-exposed group, an exposure-control group, and a cage-control group. Exposure sessions, with or without vibration, were conducted 4 hr/day, 5 days/week for 5 weeks. Manual dexterity was assessed intermittently during the 5-week exposure period with the Montoya stair-case test[3], which quantifies the rat’s ability to reach for, grasp, and retrieve small food pellets placed below the rat on different levels or steps. Following the 5-week exposure period, the flexor muscles of the right forelimb were collected for analysis of gene expression, protein concentrations, and immunohistochemistry. Results Vibration-exposure resulted in an approximate 2-fold increase in the expression of a2C and a1D receptor transcripts in flexor muscles (Figure 1). These receptors mediate norepinephrine-induced vasoconstriction in smaller arteries. Vibration-exposure also resulted in an approximate 2-fold increase in hypoxia-induced factor-1a (HIF-1a), a transcription factor that is expressed in response to tissue hypoxia. Western analyses demonstrated that restraint caused a decrease in a1-receptor protein concentrations in the flexor, but vibration-exposure prevented the restraint-induced reduction (Figure 2). Immunohistochemistry performed on flexor muscles (not shown) demonstrated that a1 receptors are primarily located in arteries; maintained levels of these receptors could contribute to prolonged vasoconstriction following repeated vibration exposure. The staircase test showed some performance improvement, or a training effect, in manual dexterity for the control groups but not the vibration-exposed group (Figure 3).

The year 1986 was not a good year for the world's mineral industry from several viewpoints. Levels of production, both of crude minerals and processed forms, registered declines in the cases of a greater number of commodities than the number that recorded increases. The overall value of world crude mineral production was estimated to have increased, but only very slightly in terms of constant dollars to nearly $997 billion. Although there were modest increases in the consumption of all major fuels and most major metals, the latter at least apparently resulted more from drawdowns of inventories than from increased production (fuel consumption increases did come from higher output levels), and consumption of most major fertilizer and chemical commodities (nitrogen, phosphate, and sulfur) were at lower levels than those in 1985. Prices for a number of mineral commodities declined, headed by the very substantial drop in world crude petroleum prices, but also including downturns for a number of metals and industrial minerals as well. There was insufficient information to reliably fix the level of the dollar value of world trade in minerals, for while output was up in the case of some large-volume materials such as iron ore, coal, and crude and refined petroleum, suggesting that the volume of trade in physical units may have increased, declining prices may well have offset quantitative gains.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the application of a spark-source mass spectrograph equipped with a spinning-electrode system for the study of various high-molecular-weight materials derived from coal. Conclusions from the investigation of anthracene, phenanthrene, chrysene, coronene, truxene, a coal-tar pitch (800 to 850 C softening point), and anthracene-chrysene synthetic mixtures follow: 1. Simplified mass spectra of anthracene, phenanthrene, chrysene, coronene, and truxene, from which the molecular weights were easily determined, were obtained by the spinning-electrode system. 2. Eight structural types having molecular weights from 178 to 252 corresponding to compounds previously observed in an electron impact mass spectrum of a coal-tar pitch sample were affirmed by this technique. 3. Mass spectra obtained from synthetic mixtures of anthracene and chrysene demonstrated that the technique is applicable for semiquantitative analysis.

[Approximately 7-1/2 million tons of subbituminous coals are mined annually in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, of which 50 percent probably reaches domestic consumers. The moisture of these subbituminous coals is high, averaging about 25 percent when they are mined. The coals are non-caking end stack to a variable degree when exposed to normal atmospheric conditions. They are good domestic fuels, are considered to be smokeless in most furnaces, and have been used for many years in hand-fired domestic furnaces in which the practice is to employ large lutes for efficient combustion.]

The State Division of Geology Arkansas Resources and Development Commission, and the Arkansas-Oklahoma Coal, Operators Association requested assistance from the Bureau of Mines in a study of coal-mining methods and practices in .Arkansas coal mines with the objective of reducing production costs. On October 7, 1946, a joint meeting was held by representatives of the Arkansas Resources and Development Commission, approximately 30 coal-mine Operators of the Arkansas -Oklahoma Coal Operaters Association, and representatives of the Bureau of Mines. The many problems confronting the coal industry in Arkansas, including mechanical mining in thin beds, costs, labor, and working time were discussed. Following this Meeting, a joint letter from Harold B. Foxhall, State geologist, and -P. R. Stewart, commissioner, Arkansas-Oklahoma Coal Operators Association, was addressed to Dr. R. R. Sayers; former ,Director of the Bureau of Mines, requesting that mining conditions in Arkansas be studied.

The original work statement of this contract was entitles: 'A Accident Analysis Model for Use in Underground Coal Mines.' The contract was scheduled for a duration of 26 months and was to be in three phases: Phase I - Model Development, Phase II - Application of the Model, and Phase III - Installation, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Model. Alter three months in Phase I, it became apparent that much of the needed data for the model was nut available and could not be made available within the original study schedule. Proceeding as plumed would have resulted in a model of limited utility. Personnel from Theodore Barry and Associates and the Bureau discussed the problem in detail and mutually decided to utilize the majority of remaining funds to assist the Bureau in solving these data problems and develop a stronger ongoing capability for safety analysis within the Bureau. Both tie contractor and the bureau officials involved believed that this decision greatly enhanced the Bureau's ability to develop future accident prediction models, whose rigor would greatly exceed what was currently possible.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines used the East Fork Pine Creek watershed to conduct a pilot study for an inactive and abandoned mine lands inventory, during which techniques and methodologies would be developed for subsequent inventories. A total of 177 waste dump samples, 191 mill tailings samples, and 36 stream sediment samples were collected. Water samples were collected from 18 sample sites during five sampling events. Waste dump, tailings, and stream sediment samples were analyzed for antimony, arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, mercury, and zinc. Results indicate a multidisciplinary approach is necessary: disciplines should include geology, geostatistis, geochemistry, geophysics, biology, hydrology, and remote sensing; small prospects do not generally contribute to watershed contamination, major mine and mill sites may contribute metal enriched sediment of metal enriched water; speciation studies and bioavailability studies are important.

Gas-liquid chromatography has been applied to separating basic nitrogen compounds, such as pyridines and amines. Close-boiling compounds have been separated by exploiting structural and polarity differences, using selective liquid substrates dispersed on specially prepared solid supports. Development of these special supports was necessary in order to obtain symmetric peaks for basic nitrogen compounds; solution of this problem was important in applying gas-liquid chromatography to the analysis of basic nitrogen compounds found in shale oil. Attempts to analyze shale-oil tar bases by conventional gas-liquid chromatographic techniques, using Chromosorb4/ or Celite 545 as the support for a nonpolar liquid substrate, resulted in asymmetric peaks. These asymmetries were caused by adsorption of sample vapors on the solid support. Symmetric peaks were obtained when strongly polar liquid substrates were used on either Chromosorb or Celite. However, a solid support giving symmetric peaks only with strong polar substrates restricts the choice of substrate, and frequently, desired separations cannot be achieved.

The record of fatalities from mine explosions in the United States during the fiscal years 1934 to 1937 wars the best in the history of the mining industry; that for the fiscal year 1939, however, is not so favorable, since nearly as many men (170) were killed by explosions in 1938 as were killed during all of the previous 4 years (182). In spite of the large increase in fatalities from explosions during 1938, the average for the past 5 year period (70.4) is less than one-half the average (13) of the preceding 5 year period. The reasons for the large increase in the number of explosion fatalities during the 7 past year as compared with the previous 4 year are not entirely clear; it is: evident, however, that in some instances there has been laxity in the enforcement of State minim laws, and also that come of our coal-mining people, including workers and operating officials, have failed to carry out tine known precautionary measures to prevent explosions.

This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Joy Mfg. Co. loader. These instructions are based upon two actual install .at ions: one made in a mine on loader, model 14BU10-11AH, and one in the factory on model 14BU10- 11AH. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other loaders with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other loaders and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

Knowledge of risks from exposure to hand-arm vibrations is usually presented by clinicians and researchers from a medical and engineering point of view. There is a strong need to develop innovative health promotion programs for exposed workers. Risk perceptions by vibration exposed workers and HAVS (hand-arm vibration syndrome) affected workers are less well known. In 1983, Brubaker demonstrated that 75% of studied fellers thought that whitening of the fingers was part of the job and/or an unrelated nuisance, while only 25% believed it was a disease. 1Grounds also showed that even though there were a very high number of forestry workers with white fingers, none considered quitting because of their condition. 2 It seems that many workers hesitate to declare the illness or believe they are less affected than they really are, perhaps from fear of losing their jobs and livelihood. 3 Risk awareness, on the part of exposed workers and their employers, as well as knowledge and acceptance of available preventive solutions are necessary steps before installing adequate preventive measures, whether organizational, behavioral or environmental. Workers need to understand fully the hazards and risks in order to be able to make informed decisions under uncertain conditions.4 Prerequisites include the following: workers knowledge about the risk, their attitude towards it, which in turn, can be influenced by values, needs and interests. Also, knowledge and attitudes towards safety behaviour, organizational or environmental barriers must be taken into account. Our research focuses on these key elements, which help bridge the gap between health promotion research and practice. Methods A descriptive exploratory study is in progress with workers exposed to hand-arm vibrations. It uses qualitative methods that include focus group discussions with workers exposed to hand-arm vibrations, as well as individual interviews with other key informants (employers, health care professionals). An open-ended questionnaire was developed to collect qualitative data on perceived risks and solutions to prevent or reduce HAVS. Based on an integrated theoretical framework related to known determinants of behavior change, the analysis will focus on the following5: 1) knowledge of health effects, safety, well-being and/or quality of life 2) related beliefs about individual susceptibility and severity of consequences 3) attitude and values related to hand-arm vibration exposure 4) knowledge and attitudes towards exposure reduction, as well as perceptions of barriers and facilitating factors for these measures, in the workplace environment or otherwise.

Load-haul dump vehicles (LHDs) are used to move waste rock and ore in underground mining operations. The LHD is designed for bi-directional operation and the driver sits sideways to the direction of travel. LHD operators have higher reports of low back pain and neck discomfort than other mobile equipment operators who do not sit sideways in the vehicle, but are exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV)1. Exposure to WBV is linked with reports of lower-back pain, neck problems and spinal degeneration2,3. Static sitting postures, sitting with the neck and back twisted, and sitting with the back in an unsupported posture are also linked with an increased risk of developing back pain4. The objective of this study was to determine typical vibration exposure levels and driving postures for LHD operators. Methods Whole-body vibration exposure was measured at the seat-pan, in accordance with the ISO 2631-1 standard5, on seven LHD vehicles with a 10 yard bucket haulage capacity. Vibration data were recorded with a Biometrics™ DataLog II (P3X8) and stored on a 128 Mb Simpletech™ multimedia card. Comparisons were made to the ISO 2631-1 Health Guidance Caution Zone (HGCZ) in order to determine potential injury risk. Operator posture was monitored with three digital video cameras which were secured inside each operator’s cab to the top left corner, top right corner and back right corner. Reflective tape was placed on each driver’s shoulders, head, and back in several locations and in several locations on the vehicle seat in order to aid in posture coding. Posture coding was performed with 3DMatch v4.50 multiple video view analysis feature. Vibration measurement and posture recording occurred simultaneously for 60 minutes while the LHD operator performed typical duties. Results and Discussion Results indicate LHD operators may be exposed to whole-body vibration levels putting them at risk for injury (Table 1). According to ISO 2631-1 the frequency weighted acceleration values corresponding to the lower and upper limits of the HGCZ (for an 8 hr exposure duration) are 0.45 and 0.90 m/s2 respectively5. Six of the seven vehicles showed exposure levels within the HGCZ defined for 8 hours. Preliminary video analysis indicated LHD operators were exposed to potentially harmful levels of WBV while adopting asymmetric postures (Table 2). For example, one LHD operator (Figure 1) worked with his neck twisted greater than 40 degrees for 93 % of a 60 minute work cycle. According to the Swedish National Work Injury Criteria, neck rotation should be less than 15 degrees if the motion is required for greater than 80% of the work time6. In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil, this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states. Information given on each heavy-oil deposit includes the following items: Field and formation, location, average or range of depth, average API gravity of oil, aver- age thickness of formation, areal extent of field, total productive wells drilled in field, discovery date of field, field status in 1963, cumulative production to Jan. 1, 1964, and all known types of secondary-recovery operations initiated (active and terminated) in the reservoirs. The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map, and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text. As of Jan. 1, 1964, 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place. It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history, such as the one in Missouri, were included, the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels. To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil, industry is developing technology in several types of thermal-recovery methods. Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study fur thermal-recovery techniques are: Lithology, depth, viscosity of reservoir fluids, gravity of oil, reservoir thickness, oil in place, and permeability and porosity.

The program, aimed at reducing noise in mines, is functionally divided into three major areas: Instrumentation, personal protection, and noise abatement. This proceedings contains the opening remarks to the seminar and seven technical presentations based on various aspects of noise abatement and control.

Characteristics of metal/non metal mines were evaluated to determine the suitability of applying the U.S. Bureau of Mines electromagnetic location system to the problem of locating trapped mines in metal/non metal mines. Statistical distributions of mine depths and overburden conductivities show that the existing USBM EM system is inadequate for most metal/non metal mines. Alternate approaches to trapped miner location in deep mines were identified and subsequent field tests were conducted at six (6) mines to evaluate their feasibility. The approach considered to be the most promising is one which utilizes the existing manpack transmitting system, modified slightly for a dual frequency output, in conjunction with a sophisticated signal processing receiver on the surface. The main advantage of staying with a "through the earth" approach is that the underground equipment can be kept simple, easily maintained, light-weight and inexpensive.
