This report presents the results of evaluating a longwall mining system specifically designed to extract a very deep web (60 inches or deeper) from a longwall panel. The report includes a productivity and cost analysis comparing the new mining sys-tem with a high capacity conventional longwall operation taking a 30-inch wide web. The analysis shows the new system will increase annual production 44 percent and decrease cost per ton off the face 21 percent. The report also includes conceptual drawings and specifications for a high capacity four-drum shearer and a unique shield type of roof support specifically designed for very wide web operation. The advantages and problems associated with wide web mining are discussed in general and as they relate specifically to the equipment selected for the new mining system. The study concludes by recommending that surface coal loading tests be conducted as the follow-on work.

Aminopolyacetic acid chelating agents were added to separatory-funnel-scale solvent-extraction systems to determine the effect on separating rare-earth elements. Average values for separation factors between adjacent elements obtained with Primene JM-T2 increase 36 percent when EDTA is added to the aqueous phase. Adding HEDTA or DCTA also improves separation factors for certain rare-earth elements. Percentage of extraction and the separation factors exhibit marked sensitivity to concentrations of amine, chelating agent, and hydrogen ion. The chelating agents improved separation in Primene JM-T, BHDA, and Primene 81-R extraction systems.

This paper, one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining at various mica mines in the United States, describes the methods now in use in the principal mica mines of the Southern Appalachian States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

Coal occurs at many scattered localities in Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon, but in most of the known occurrences thick coal beds are of small extent and the coal generally contains a high percentage of impurities. The coal beds occur at many different horizons in strata of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. Bituminous coal has been found in several areas, the most extensive of which is the Eden Ridge field of Oregon. Lignite also occurs in many places, but the only extensive deposit is in the Goose Creek field of Idaho, Nevada, and "Utah. The coal reserves of the region are largely of subbituminous rank; most of the subbituminous coal is in the Black Mesa field of northeastern Arizona and the Coos Bay field of Oregon. The Black Mesa field contains more than 80 percent of the coal reserves of all ranks but is remote from both transportation facilities and centers of consumption. Substantial reserves ill the Coos Bay field are favorably situated with respect to transportation and markets. ARIZONA Subbituminous coal occurs in the Black Mesa, Pinedale, and Gallup coal fields in Apache, Navajo, and Coconino Counties, Ariz. (fig. 1). Bituminous coal occurs in the Deer Creek field in Pinal and Graham Counties and in a small area in Apache County at the north-east corner of the State. All the coal beds are in strata of Cretaceous age. The coal in the Gallup field and at the northeast corner of the State lies in the Western edge of the San Juan structural basin. "Vest and south of this basin the coal-bearing strata have been removed by erosion except in high mesas.

Since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, the need for improved duet control methods has become imperative. It has been proposed that one promising dust control technique would be the application of water through the cutter drum. In November of 1972, the Jeffrey Mining Machinery Co., who had been pursuing the development of wet drum miners since 1969, completed the manufacture of a 120M HELIMINER which had sprays in front of the cutting bits on a fixed width drum. On June 27, 1973 Jeffrey and the Bureau of Mines signed the contract numbered B0232060 for the purpose of evaluating "the effectiveness of respirable dust control on a Jeffrey 120M HELIMINER by use of water piped through the head." This evaluation, as described by the contract, was to be accomplished by the collection and analysis of dust samples at various locations of an operating mine production section.

The Lake Shore property, located in the early 1880's, contains copper-bearing deposits that have been developed by surface excavations, underground workings, and churn-drill holes. Operation of the property ended in 1929 with a total recorded production of 280,000 pounds of copper. The property is near the foot of the Slate Mountains, which are made up mainly of probably the Pinal formation of pre-Cambrian age. In the mine area there are a few outcrops of granite, which is exposed over a large area east of the property. Other outcropping rocks on the property are limestone, quartzite, and diabase. The limestone and quartzite probably are the Mescal and Troy formations of pre-Cambrian and Cambrian age, respectively. The predominant copper mineral is chrysocolla, a hydrous silicate that occurs mainly as fracture filling in bedded schist. It is also, the principal copper mineral in the shear zone at the schist-granite contact and in limestone southeast of the main workings. Investigation of the Lake Shore property by the Bureau of Mines included both topographic and geologic mapping, exploratory drilling, and metallurgical test work. One diamond-drill, hole and five churn-drill holes were completed for a total of 2,872.5 feet. Drilling started January 19 and was completed May 13, 1949.

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducts a comprehensive test program on clay and shale at the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Center. All samples are subjected to standard preliminary ceramic tests, which include firing formed briquets at temperatures ranging from 1,000° to 1,250° C to identify firing range and colors, and quick-firing to determine bloating characteristics. Materials that shop potential as structural products are further tested after either extrusion or dry-pressing. If the quick-fire test is positive, bulk samples can be fired in a rotary kiln to evaluate their potential as light- weight aggregate A number of miscellaneous tests also can be conducted if requested. These tests determine properties such as refractoriness (pyrometric cone equivalency), oil-bleaching characteristics, oil absorbency, viscosity for drilling-mud applications, sand-bonding properties for foundry usage, and pelletizing characteristics.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heat¬ing value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions./ issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made.Analyses of the delivered coal and ""tipple"" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. Moreover, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.The Government purchased approximately 5-1/2 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1951. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 10,700 samples. These are published for the use of Government officials and the public. A series of publications s been completed on coal analyses by States, or, where production is small in any State, by groups of adjacent States. In addition to analytical data showing composition and quality of coals of the States, the publications contain brief descriptions of the geological structure of the coal basins, typical mining conditions in the various districts, the principal economic data of the industry, and the relationship of mine or channel samples to delivered and tipple samples. A lignite from west-central North Dakota (Mercer County) was dried by the Bureau of Mines by the Fleissner process at saturated steam pressures to 1,500 pounds per square inch absolute (p.s.i.a.). Normally, the process is operated at pressures of 200 to 370 p.s.i.a. At the highest pressure the temperature of the saturated stearn is 596° F. The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the influence of very high stearn pressure and temperature on moisture removal, steam consumption, and physical and chemical characteristics of the dried lignite. Two drying cycles were used: A normal cycle, corresponding to previously established standard time requirements, and an accelerated cycle, wherein time requirements were determined by boiler capacity and handling speed. Blank tests to determine stearn requirements for heating the empty autoclave were performed for each cycle and each test condition. Moisture removal, final moisture content, net steam consumption, and size stability of the dried lignite were determined.

"This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations ni the Unietd States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperating agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CRF) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC)3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.4/The present report presents analytical data for 1,381 samples, representing the products of approximately 75 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were secured during July and the first half of August, 1945. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples – regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 733 samples, 229 items, and 57 brands; premium-price, 504 samples, 197 items, and 56 brands; third-grade, 84 samples, 28 items and 12 brands. THE BUREAU OF MINES was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve mineral resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to "disseminate information concerning these subjects 'in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.'" In accordance with that directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau sources. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes Bureau reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1960 to December 31, 1964. It, supplements the 50-year list of Bureau publications issued from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960,2 and the 50-year list of articles by Bureau authors published outside the Bureau from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960.3 It supersedes the annual lists of Bureau publications and articles from January 1 to December 31, 1960,4 from January 1 to December 31, 1961,5 from January 1 to December 31, 1962,6 and from January 1 to December 31, 1963.7 The leading general and technical libraries of the United States maintain files of the Bureau's publications. This paper has been abstracted from a forthcoming Bureau of Mines bulletin on the concentration of copper ores in North America. GENERAL DEVELOPMENTS IN CONCENTRATING COPPER ORES FROM 1912 TO 1932 During the east 20 years the milling of copper ores as practiced in the larger concentrators has chanced to such an extent that comparatively few of the machines in use at the beginning of this period remain in service today. Concentrating Practice in 1912. In 1912 the usual equipment for concentrating copper ores comprised jigs for the coarser sizes, tables and sand vanners for the intermediate sizes, and vanners for the finer crushed and ground material. Rolls operated in series under graded crushing conditions, were in common use for the liberation of the copper minerals; grinding by Chilean or Muntington mills ordinarily was confined to the coarser tailings of jigs and tables.

Low- temperature heat capacities of strontium chloride (7° - 300° K) and strontium fluoride ( 11 ° - 300 ° K) were measured with an adiabatic calorimeter . Smooth values of heat capacity , entropy , enthalpy function , and free - energy function were calculated from the heat - capacity data . The smooth values are reported at 10 ° K intervals and at 273.15 ° and 298.15 ° K.

In a few instances the results of research that would not otherwise be available in the immediate future are presented.
