The use of monitors to assess equipment performance is carried out on a routine basis in many industries. The benefits gained through process control in knowing exactly how the equipment is working far outweigh the initial capital costs of the monitor. In the mining industry several dragline monitors have been developed and installed on equipment through out the world, but to date none has been fully accepted by the industry. This paper describes the use of a sophisticated monitoring system which incorporates an onboard processor to assess both dragline and blast performance. The use of a radio telemetry link for data transfer has removed the need for manual data collection and transfer, leading to a more efficient and powerful system. Significant effort has been put into the development and verification of a dig index to allow blast performance to be objectively assessed.

Air decking applications are examined using numerical modelling and the AutodynTM code. The mechanism of damage is illustrated and discussed. Air decking is shown to provide advantages over stemming when powder factor is maintained. The current effort does not support reduction of the explosives column in favour of air decking. In a similar fashion, bottom hole air decking increases fracturing in the area of the air deck, compared to when the same volume is occupied by inert materials; however air decking does not appear to reduce the requirement for subdrilling. The apparent discrepancy between the numerical results and some field observations reported in the literature is discussed.

The importance of controlling density of commercial explosives, and the various means to achieve it are described. m e field conditions responsible for density changes during blasting and their effect on blast results are examined. Understanding of the behaviour of density control ingredients such as gas bubbles, glass and plastic microballoons under pressure, is considered essential to predicting explosives performance. Both static and dynamic pressure effects have been studied for typical donor-receptor cartridge configurations. The amplitude and temporal characteristics of dynamic pressures inside receptor explosives have been studied by means of the underwater test, and guidelines developed to limit density changes due to external pressures.

In contrast to global trends, African, especially South African, surface mining operations have shown a significant rate of adoption of Electronic Detonators (ED’s) over the last few years. Proven benefits of converting to ED’s from pyrotechnic initiation systems have aided this market conversion. These benefits are experienced throughout the mining operation. Benchmarking exercises, prior to the introduction of ED’s, form part of the conversion process and allow for quantifying improvements. Extensive work has been done on quantifying the benefits of converting to ED’s and have shown that results can be reproducible. Improvements have been experienced in many applications and include environmental impact control, improved mining efficiencies, increased cast benefit and improved size distribution. These step changes in blasting results, in conjunction with the adoption of ED technology have aided the rapid conversion of the African surface market.

The use of an ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosive in the Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing has led to a renewed interest in using additives during the manufacturing process of ammonium nitrate to render it non-detonable. Suggested additives include calcium carbonate, which is already used in some European countries, and mono-ammonium phosphate (MAP) or di-ammonium phosphate (DAP), which are the primary desensitizing agents claimed in US patent 3,366,468, Method for desensitizing fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate and the product obtained, issued Jan. 30, 1968 (Porter, 1965).

Explosives are used in the entertainment industry in a wide variety of applications. Live performances such as automobile races, air shows and the like have incorporated the use of explosives into their programs. Even art work has been created employing explosive materials and techniques. The primary entertainment use of explosives, however, remains in motion pictures, television, theater and related fields where it comes under the auspices of special effects. Much of it falls roughly into the category of demolition, though the object being demolished may range from a cigarette in a person's mouth or clothing worn by actors to large objects such as automobiles, aircraft, or boats. This paper will attempt to provide an overview of the materials and methods by which these special effects are created as well as highlight the unique problems encountered in this field and their often equally unique solutions.

A joint research programme conducted by BHP Central Research Laboratories and Du Pont Wesfarmers Pty Ltd examined the effect of the size of cast primers on the run up and steady state detonation velocities of ammonium nitrate based explosives as a function of blasthole diameter. Both continuous and point to point velocity of detonation measurement techniques were used. The field trials examined a number of the Du Pont HDP series of primers in conjunction with ANFO, emulsion and watergel explosives. Results indicate that the run up velocity of 187mm diameter ANFO charges is negligible using cast primers as small as 1509. However, emulsion and watergel explosives did exhibit run up in both 187 and 311mm diameter blastholes, independent of the size of primer. This could last from 7 to 10 blasthole diameters.

The Brisbane City Council has implemented a program of continual improvement at its Mount Coot-tha Quarry in the heart of Brisbane, Australia. The program has been underway for the past 6 years, and has resulted in very significant improvements in terms of both the cost effectiveness of its operation, and in terms of its environmental impact on nearby residents. The work has included a focus, amongst other things, on blasting efficiency, and has challenged conventional thinking in terms of the size of blasts fired, the frequency of firing, the diameter of blastholes, and the use of bulk emulsion or slurry explosives.

Pre-splitting has become widely adopted for the formation and protection of final surface rock excavation profiles in both large scale civil construction and highway rock cuts. Jointing has been shown to affect the success of pre-splitting and the smoothness of the resulting profile, however, only closed joints have been investigated. Frequently jointing that is closed at depth is open at and near the surface due to weathering, reduced stresses and ground water percolation. In many instances, problems are associated with surface rock layers whereas at depth these problems are either reduced or do not exist.

Numerical modelling was used to examine damage in wall control operations. Decoupled charges appear to create larger damage zones than fully coupled low density charges with similar charge distributions: Air was shown to be a very efficient coupling medium, while water coupling resulted in significant damage. However, Mach stems are formed when air is used as a decoupling medium, leading to compression of the charge ahead of the detonation wave. Air decked charges generate two damage zones, one close to the charge and another close to the air-deck/stemming interface, where pressure pulses are reflected. The extent of the latter depends on the length of the air-deck.

Many controversies and differences of opinion exist in blasting technology. The primer location in small diameter dynamite columns is an example of one of these controversial areas. It is generally agreed that in rotation firing of small diameter blastholes, primer placement near the bottom of the borehole is beneficial since it reduces the likelihood of cutoffs. The controversy results in the actual location of the primer in the bottom of the blasthole. Some references indicate that the primer cartridge should be the first cartridge in the bottom of the hole, with the cap pointed toward the collar of the hole. Others indicate that performance is improved with no sacrifice in safety by placing a tamped cartridge first in the hole, and the second cartridge being the primer. The following investigation provides some factual data for consideration.

With the continuing rise in the cost of petroleum products and the focus on the increasing use of renewable resources, a readily available, economical replacement for fuel oil in ANFO is the logical next step, and has finally come to realization. This “green” fuel is plentiful, derived from renewable resources, more cost effective and reduces CO emissions. It also increases product density and bulk strength performance. As this unique fuel replaces some of the mass of ammonium nitrate prill, increased savings will be realized proportionally with the increasing cost of ammonium nitrate. Minimal changes are necessary, as this renewable fuel is designed for use and handling with current, commonly used ANFO blending and loading equipment. This proven technology is now in use by commercial operations in the Southwest, providing significant economic benefit with reduced cost per hundred weight of ANFO consumed.

Emulsion manufactures often spot buy the diesel fuel used in their fuel phases from various sources. Because their diesel source changes, there can be large fuel variation which may affect the quality of the resulting emulsions. This paper shows that the diesel fuel used in manufacturing emulsion explosives has a significant impact on emulsion stability and that the fuel additives dosed into the diesel fuel as it is made also have an impact on the emulsion characteristics and stability. We found that fuels with higher distillation ranges improve emulsion stability. We also found that while none of the diesel fuel additives affected the initial formation of the emulsion, some fuel additives did affect the characteristics and stability of the emulsions as measured by emulsion viscosity, droplet size, high and low shear testing, bin storage testing and freeze thaw cycling.

The explosives community has seen tremendous technological advances during the past several decades. When this industry was in it's infancy and even past, Powder Monkey's defied the odds by relying on daring and cunning to unleash the power contained in nitroglycerin and black powder. Unlike the manufactured improvements, there has been little in professional evolution amongst the blasting fraternity unless provoked (for the most part) by the government. It is the intent of this author to advance the cause of an industry wide training and certification program, uniform in nature and broad-based enough to be voluntary, giving states whose outstanding programs are already in place, the opportunity to provide input. In creating this type of atmosphere, grandfathering, reciprocity and accessibility would be paramount. With ISEE taking a firm leadership role during the inception and NICET's involvement in the administration, the idea postulated here is intended to spark interest and debate, bringing the inception of such a program to the forefront.

AEL’s Electronic Delay Detonators are in routine use and growing in both volume and breadth of application in Africa. This trend will continue and grow internationally owing to increasing pressure on rockbreaking operations to conform to sustainable development principles. A fundamental breakthrough has been achieved, bringing production blasting into line with technologies, which leverage performance through tight monitoring and control. When moving from pyrotechnic systems, benefits are normally realized without having to adopt different timing patterns, but significant additional benefits are realisable by using the flexibility and precision of the electronic units to enter windows of timing previously closed. The higher price and increased care needed are a worthwhile investment, enabling operations to cross the chasm to stronger revenues, but the system must be robust and suited to the application and personnel. Economic models are vital for keeping track of the potential and achieved benefits of these systems. Some resistance can be expected from those who stand to lose income as a result of the improved efficiencies.

Based on the rock blasting engineering, The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) network has been implemented for the concept and method of rock blastability classification. The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is a neural network algorithm which is especially suitable for the analysis and visualization of high-dimensional data. It maps nonlinear statistical relationships between high-dimensional input data into simple geometric relationships, usually on a two-dimensional grid. The mapping roughly preserves the most important topological and metric relationships of the original data elements and, thus, inherently clusters the data. SOM allows easy data fusion enabling visualization and analysis of large databases of rock blasting engineering. As a case study, the classification technique based on SOM has been used to classify the rock mass blastability rank. It can be founded from this paper that the SOM networks can be developed well based on a comprehensive data set of rock blasting engineering.

Over 4 billion pounds of commercial explosives are used by the U.S. mining industry every year with an excellent and improving safety record. However, accidents involving explosives are seldom minor. They produce a disproportionate amount of fatalities compared to other mining activities, as reflected in the relatively high severity rates. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has been analyzing blasting accident data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine the most frequent causes of mine blasting accidents, examining trends in these accidents, and identifying areas of needed research. This paper is an update of three previous blasting accident studies conducted on 4-year intervals by the USBM and published in 1983, 1987, and 1991, and is based on a total of 869 blasting accidents.

At Bayswater Colliery various methods of controlling highwall stabii were investigated. The use of presplitting was trialled and its effectiveness measured. The presplit hole spacing and explosive charge were based on those succes& lly used in other coal mines in the Hunter Valley. The major presplit design parameter to be determined was the stand-off distance between the presplit line and the back row of the production blast. This could not be transfmed directly from other sites due to the difference between the Bayswater’s production blast geometry and geology to that of other sites. Using highwall face surveys and Orica’s SUR..YPlus@ software, the average back-break behind normal production blasts was determined. This was then used to select the stand-off distance between the back row production blastholes to the presplit line. While presplit designs are normally based on powder factor (kg/m2), the use of energy factor (MJ/m2) was also investigated as a possible design criteria.

The recording of information is critical to the blasting process, whether it be for planning purposes, statutory requirements or environmental compliance. The review and analysis of past data can play a key part in a blast.s design. Statutory records must be held to preserve operational licenses and well-maintained monitoring records are a vital defence for today.s litigious society. However a single blasting event can be responsible for generating vast amounts of data. This information maybe collected pre or post-blast and in their individual ways may have a requirement to be logged, processed, analysed, reviewed and reported before eventually being archived.

Blasters are well aware of the problems and expense faced when trying to load in wet bore holes; problems of poor coupling and poor density, as well as the expense of higher priced cartridge product. In answer to these problems, I developed a system for dewatering using nozzles with lay -flat plastic liners which I have used successfully over the last few years. I found the system not only gave me better shots than I could have expected in the circumstances, but also dramatically decreased costs. The system has been adopted by two large roading contractors and a quarry operation in Eastern Canada.
