"The National Uranium Tailings Program was established in 1982 to develop, in part, a mathematical predictive model which would allow the assessment of the impact of uranium mill tailings on the environment and particularly on humans. . To achieve this , various studies were undertaken to establish the role played by key constituents of the tailings. This paper summarizes the findings of a study carried out under that program, to examine the leachability of barium-radium sulphate sludges produced in the treatment of uranium mill tailings decants. The investigators performed detailed chemical an alysis of the sludge, applied geochemical computer models to investigate sludge leaching behaviour, and conducted experiments to assess the impact of bacteria on leaching. The modelling showed that the redox state o f the sludge-leachant system was the most important factor. Substantial bacterially-mediated dissolutio n of the sludge and release of radium was demonstrated experimentally under suitable reducing conditions . INTRODUCTIONIn September 1981, Phillip A. Lapp presented the final report of the National Technical Planning Group on uranium tailings research to the federal government (Lapp, 1981). Lapp' s group had performed an in-depth survey of the status of uranium tailings research in Canada and, as a result, recommended that a national program be funded in the amount of $18 .6 million. Half of this fund ing was to come from the federal government, with the two producing provinces , Ontario and Saskatchewan, providing the balance. However , the provinces declined to support the program and the federal government decided to inaugurate a reduced program with $8.5 million o f funds .In late 1982, the formation of the National Uranium Tailings Program (NUTP) was announced by the minister of state for mines. A primary objective of this program was to develop a mathematical predictive model that would permit the assessment of the impact of uranium mill tailings on the environment, a nd particularly on humans. The program was to use existing information to the greatest possible extent, and then fund research to fill in gaps or substantiate data where necessary .The NUTP was established to administer this program of contract research over a five-year sunset life. By the end of the 1986-87 fiscal year the NUTP had completed about 100 contracts. One of those projects was to study the effect of placing barium-radium sludge ba ck within the tailings matrix. "Bubble size plays a key role in flotation. In this paper, we examine the possibility of using passive acoustic sending to determine bubble size. Software was developed based on Short Time Fourier Transformation (STFT) to analyze the frequency of the acoustic signal emitted from the bubble formation event. Bubble size was determined from the Minnaert frequency. The acoustic-determined bubble size responded to reagent dosage, but was less sensitive than that given by imaging. The constraints of the current acoustic approach are discussed.INTRODUCTIONBubble size is an important factor affecting flotation performance. It determines the maximum available surface area for collecting and transporting mineral particles. Of interest for process control (Gorain, Franzidis, & Manlapig, 1995), it can be determined by several techniques, such as image analysis (Grau & Heiskanen, 2002; Hernandez-Aguilar, Gomez, & Finch, 2002); conductivity (Barigou & Greaves, 1992); drift flux analysis using gas rate and gas holdup measurements (Banisi & Finch, 1994); and optical sensors (Randall, Goodall, Fairlamb, Dold, & Connor, 1989). However, all these techniques have drawbacks.Acoustic analysis of the oscillatory behaviour of bubbles to extract bubble size is another possibility (Leighton & Walton, 1987; Pandit, Varley, Thorpe, & Davidson, 1992; Al-Masry, Ali, & Aqeel, 2005; Manasseh & Ooi, 2009; Leighton & White, 2012; Spencer et al., 2012). "The feasibility study determines the technical and economic viability of a project at the level of accuracy required by the owner to make an investment decision. The economic analysis usually includes calculation of the discounted cash flow. Key components of the cash flow include the project capital cost, the operating costs, construction schedule, production rate, product prices and financial details.This paper examines the feasibility study for a typical mining project. The paper discusses acceptable methods for the determination of the geological and mineable are reserves. The prerequisites for the development of suitable designs, and the calculation of capital and operating costs for the mine, processing plant, and infrastructure are reviewed. Important features of the cash flow analysis and its interpretation are presented.IntroductionThe commercial development of a mineral deposit invariably requires the investment of capital in preparing the deposit for production. It has always been necessary, therefore, to demonstrate to the investor of capital that production of a saleable commodity is both technically feasible and economically viable. The instrument typically used to make these determinations is the feasibility study .Traditionally, mining companies have been rather conservative in their approach to financial management. Until about thirty years ago, the capital required to develop a new mine was most frequently provided by internal corporate cash now and virtually all of the necessary technical and economic studies were performed 'in house'. Under these circumstances, there was little standardization as to what constituted an acceptable feasibility study, and even less as to what constituted an acceptable measure of economic viability."

"The Saskatchewan potash beds are overlain by a number of water-bearing formations. There are water zones in the footwall as well. These aquifers created difficulties during the construction of shafts to the potash beds at 1()(}() m depth, and they pose a continuous threat to the safe and efficient operation of potash mines in the province.The first shafts to be sunk in Saskatchewan encountered major problems during shaft sinking. Of the 17 potash shafts started in the province, five had major water inflows during shaft sinking or after production startup, and one was abandoned because of water problems. The biggest obstacle encountered during shaft sinking was a poorly consolidated sand-shale-clay-siltstone unit commonly called the Blairmore Formation, which occurs at a depth of about 500 m. The initial problems with shaft sinking were overcome in the 19605by using European methods of freezing and the installation of cast-iron tubbings or a double-steel lining through water bearing horizons.From the start of production in the early 19605, operators have been aware of the ever-present hazard of potential water inflows into mine openings from permeable units in both the hanging wall (carbonates of the Dawson Bay Formation which occur 15 m to 50 m above the mining level) and the footwall (carbonates of the Winnipegosis Formation which occur 50 m to 150m below). This awareness has been reflected in conservative over-all extraction rates and mining layouts specific to local conditions. In spite of this consciousness, a number of water problems have occurred in operating mines. These have resulted in everything from simple increases in expenditure to the shut-down of one mine in 1987.In this paper a history of water problems in the Saskatchewan potash industry is given, followed by a summary of measures that are now commonly used to avoid these problems. A description of each inflow event is given, and the attempt is made to analyze the causes of each occurrence. Based on what was learned f rom each event, suggestions are made to prevent future water inflows into potash mines."

"Malcolm Knowles, the famous adult educator once wrote: ""What a challenge we in human resources development face if we are to avoid the obsolescence of our workforce. I can foresee this challenge requiring that we reconceptualize (...) and redefine the role of HRD, away from that of managing the logistics of conducting training activities to that of managing a system of learning resources"".The context in which this was written surrounds the subject of adult education and the need for business and industry to change its approach to the treatment of adults as learners. In explaining what 'managing a system of learning resources' means, Knowles refers to line supervisors and managers as the most ubiquitous resources for day-in and day-out employee development. In many organizations training has been largely a staff rather than line responsibility. Even where trainers reported to line management, it was still seen as a staff function performed by a few specialists.This change referred to by Knowles places a much heavier responsibility on line supervisors and managers for the development of their personnel than has traditionally been the case. Managing that change - handing over the responsibility to the line organization - is the supreme challenge for the HRD function.Just why is this change necessary? Because too often, the learner does not effectively use on the job what he or she learned in the classroom. In fact, learners often discard new methods and revert to the older ways. The reason training does not stick is that the systems for training and work management are most often separate entities and while one may support the other, they need to be a single integrated system in order to ensure the transfer to the job effectiveness of training and some real value for the training dollars.Because much training can be wasted, steps have to be taken to ensure that it fulfills its intended purpose. The effective and continuing application of knowledge and skills that learners acquire can only be realized when line supervisors and managers are at the centre of the training system.This paper describes how such a systemis being developed at the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) as a functional training program is introduced. The following text provides background information on the IOC - who they are and where they are located, a definition of functional training, an evaluation of the suitability of this approach for adults in industry, a description of how the program is being implemented at IOC and some observations that have been made as this change is experienced."

Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) levels were measured in underground mines in the vicinity of diesel vehicles equipped with several types of emission control hardware. In general, the emission control devices appeared to reduce PAH levels, but the companion mutagen study suggested that the reduction might not always be beneficial. All underground PAH concentrations were below the threshold at which a significant impact on health might be expected, but recent animal exposure studies have indicated that PAHs may not be the primary hazard from chronic diesel fume exposure.

"Development of the unique Mine Games exhibition at Science World British Columbia is the largest ever collaboration of many interests to present the story of mining and the issues of mineral development delivered to the public by a science education centre.IntroductionMineral education programs have long been a major focus of the British Columbia mining community. Mine Games and its tremendous potential to enhance industries image and the public's awareness of mining is unequalled in the field of Issue Based Education Exhibits.The main goal of the exhibition is to look at the future of resource industries in a rapidly changing world of economic activities, new technologies, and growing public concern for the environment. Three challenges were the aim of the exhibition: to increase participation, to serve as a tool to increase interest in science and technology, and to draw an increasing number of school students to the interests of geology and the earth sciences. Mine Games is to serve as a meeting place for discussion of issues and where reliable information can be shared and new ideas explored.The exhibition is designed to develop new approaches to hands on learning that encourages visitors to explore and generate discussion and thinking with respect to resource development activities.The role of author, beginning in 1993, was, with senior industry leaders, to coordinate the raising of $1.3 million to complete the funding of the $1.6 million project total. The second and most interesting challenge was to work with the many minds that were collaborating to create the exhibition and to assure that the facts and science were correct. This involved the coordination of ""expert groups"" that verified the science and technology and the issues that the creative design team at Science World planned to use in development of each exhibit module."

The term ?cost? is too small when describing the destructive power of safety incidents for mining companies. Breaches in employee or environmental safety are felt way beyond the bottom-line: human life can be taken; ecosystems tarnished; the ire of peoples, media and government inflamed; significant halting of production; and high levels of legal and financial challenges. According to a recent survey of Mining executivesi, ?ensuring workforce safety? was the most important issues identified above any other, with a plurality of 31 percent, reigning above capital projects, product efficiency, and equipment reliability. We accept that safety is a most paramount issue, yet for many reasons we keep approaching the problem the same way we have in the past. We need to stop doing the same things decade over decade and try something new. New innovations are significantly changing the fundamentals of how mining companies explore, excavate, produce, refine and distribute their valuable commodities. Technologies such as visualization, analytics, location awareness, and gaming simulation are making these enterprises smarter. Now, attention turns to an area we?ve long held as integral to our business: safety. By using the same breakthrough technologies that are changing our business, we can now boldly imagine ? and credibly strive for ? a world of zero incidents.

"The Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation contains the bitumen reserves of the Syncrude Mine in northeastern Alberta. This formation comprises sediments deposited sequentially in fluvial, estuarine and marine depositional environments. The Syncrude Base Mine area consists mostly of estuarine sediments, as much of the original marine sediments have been eroded away. These estuarine deposits consist of channel-fill sediments and interchannel tidal flat sediments with the channel-fills comprising most of the orebody.Channel-fills contain, among other lithologies, interbedded sand, silt and clay rich layers that often occur as sequences of inclined beds with dips up to 25 degrees or more. A detailed knowledge of the distribution of these inclined beds, their lithological characteristics and their continuity is very important in assessing the risk of mine highwall instability . Techniques used to identify and characterize adverse structures are reviewed. INTRODUCTIONGeneralThe Syncrude Canada Ltd. oil sand mine is located within the surface mineable portion of the Athabasca Oil Sands area about 40 kilometres north of Fort McMurray in northeastern Alberta, Canada (Fig. I). The company commenced large-scale strip mining of oil sands in June 1977in the area, referred to as the Base Mine, situated in the southeast corner of the company's two lease areas (Fig. 2).The mining method (Fig. 3) utilizes large electric drag lines operating on a single bench with highwall depths up to 60 metres. Feed grade oil sand (= 6 wt.% bitumen) is mined by draglines and windrowed parallel to the highwall crest. Lower grade oil sand « 6 wt. 0J0 bitumen) occurring as waste bands is selectively mined by the draglines and cast back into the mined out pit or placed on the bench and hauled by truck. The windrowed feed is delivered to the extraction plant by a bucket wheel reclaimer and conveyor system. Stripping of Recent, Pleistocene and Cretaceous overburden units is done outside the conveyor systems by mobile equipment. The 4.5 kilometre long mine is split into four quadrants for planning and scheduling purposes, with each quadrant having an individual dragline-bucketwheel-conveyor system.Surface mining of oil sand at Syncrude requires the removal of vast quantites of material. The design of the open pit mine relies heavily on knowledge of the distribution of ore and waste materials, and on the physical characteristics of these materials.The geology of the oil sand below the dragline bench at the Syncrude Mine is complex. Geological, geotechnical and hydrogeological factors play an important role in the design and operation of the mine. This paper describes aspects of the geology that impact on the design and operation of the mine. Some of the methods and procedures adopted by Syncrude to successfully overcome difficulties that the complex geology creates are discussed."

"The Nemeiben Lake ultramafic complex, in the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield in north-central Saskatchewan, is a small I. 6-km circular plug largely composed of high-alumina pyroxene cumulates forming a series of grossly concentric layers of clinopyroxenite, websterite and wehrlite. Minor dunite and gabbro are present in the northwestern part of the pluton.Disseminated primary magmatic pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite, magnetite and chromite occur throughout the intrusion. Sulphides occur in proportions of economic interest in the northern outcrops. A secondary assemblage of fine-grained oxides, sulphides and native metals occurs in serpentinized and uralitized peridotites and pyroxenites. Primary opaque minerals are largely altered to marcasite, violarite and hematite. The ores represent a primary magmatic assemblage extensively modified by metamorphism and, to a lesser extent, by supergene alteration.The complex intruded an Early Aphebian supracrustral succession during the waning stages of the Hudsonian orogeny. The metamorphic peak during Hudsonian time reached middle to upper amphibolite facies, granitized the country rocks and contributed to the partial amphibolitization of the ultramafic pluton.The Nemeiben complex has a number of features in common with the zoned intrusions of southeastern Alaska, including: the diopsidic composition of clinopyroxene, highly magnesian olivines, ubiquitous primary magnetite, relatively high alumina content of clinopyroxenes and the unlikelihood that associated gabbroic rocks are derived from a magma common to the ultramafic rocks. However, at Nemeiben, orthopyroxene occurs as a widespread postcumulus phase and, to a lesser extent, as a cumulus mineral. This fact, together with geochemical data on whole-rock and mineral compositions, indicates a tholeiitic parentage.The nickel-copper deposits of the Nemeiben Lake ultramafic complex are not currently economic, although standard technology for recovery of sulphide minerals in the clinopyroxenite (and websterite) would probably be adequate. Most ore minerals in the altered peridotites belong to the fine-grained secondary assemblage of opaques due to the formation of retrograde hydrous silicates and are probably too fine grained for standard recovery methods."

"Solvent extraction is the one of the most common techniques for recovering metal ions from aqueous systems. However, it is not efficient in the extraction of low concentration metal ions from aqueous solutions. Predispersed solvent extraction (PDSE) is an alternative method for solvent extraction which implies colloidal liquid aphrons as extracting agents in order to reach higher interfacial area and lower reagent consumption. This work investigated important parameters in PDSE of nickel ions from dilute aqueous solutions by fractional factorial design of experiments. Four experimental parameters, the initial extractant concentration, initial surfactant concentration, equilibrium pH and phase volume ratio (organic to aqueous ratio) were investigated. The important parameters were determined as well as important interactions between these parameters. It was found that extractant concentration, phase volume ratio, and equilibrium pH are the most significant experimental parameters. However, the interaction between surfactant concentration and other parameters was determined as significant interactions.INTRODUCTIONNickel is one of the key components found in cars, mobile phones, rechargeable batteries, kitchen appliances, and steel industry (Anyadike, 2002). It is one of the most important metals produced by Canada which is in the five top nickel producers in the world. Despite a 24% decrease in the nickel prices from 2011 to 2014 the nickel global mine production increased by 36% between these years (U.S. Geological Survey, 2015; Nickel - Statista Dossier, 2015), which shows the increasing demand for nickel. This high demand leads producers to consider the production of nickel from low grade ores and other secondary sources such as process wastewaters. The removal of nickel ions from process wastewater is also important due to environmental considerations. Nickel is known to be a human carcinogen and it may cause serious lung and kidney problems, pulmonary fibrosis, gastrointestinal distress, and skin dermatitis if it exceeds the critical level (Borba et al., 2006; Fu & Wang, 2011)."

"Belts of Yellowknife Supergroup volcanic and sedimentary strata in the Slave Structural Province are separated by granitoid complexes. The strata and most intrusive rocks are 2.7 and 2.5 Ga old, but rocks around 3.1 Ga have been recognized in some of the complexes and are believed to represent a once-extensive sialic crust. Volcanics were erupted along rifts in this crust and the rifts became sites of crustal foundering and the development of troughs that filled with turbidites of volcanic and granitoid provenance. Present margins of the granitoid complexes may be close to the original margins of deposition of volcanics, with associated mineral deposits, and close to the thickest parts of basins of sedimentation.The Hackett River volcanic belt extends 100 kilometres between Mara River and Back River and is crudely S-shaped, with a northern sector surrounding a core of granitoid basement rocks, a northeasterly facin g central sector and a southerly facing southern sector. Up to 8 kilometres of andesitic volcanics with intercalated felsi c volcanic rocks are preserved within the central sector. The f elsic rocks include thick lenses of volcaniclastics with large, quartz-eye-bearing clasts, but the known metal deposits are not associated with these. Both of the deposit areas, the Hackett River area in the northern domal sector and the 'A itch ' Lake area 40 kilometres to the south in the central sector, are near the tops of relatively thin atypical volcanic sequences above suspected basement rocks. The Yava deposit near 'A itch , Lake overlies a unit of subaerially deposited, welded, andesit ic ash flows and the Hack ett River deposits overlie highly metamorphosed volcaniclastic rocks that include suspected ignimbrites.The deposits are notably argentijerous and lead-rich. They consist of stratigraphically zoned sheet-like bodies of iron sulphides, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite underlain by altered rocks containing chalcopyrite stringers. The Yava deposit was formed where hydrothermal fluids exuded through the fractured floor of a flooded caldera basin. The Hackett River deposits may have been formed in a similar setting and it is not inconceivable that all the known deposits in the belt were formed in a single large caldera basin, although there is no independent evidence for the required major fault separation between the Hackett River dome and the 'Aitch' Lake area."

"Effects of Fe, Cu and Mg minor alloying elements on creep properties of 8xxx aluminum conductor alloys were investigated by conducting compressive creep tests at 100 ºC under a constant load of 69 MPa. The microstructural evolution was studied using an optical microscope and electron backscatter diffraction technique. The creep properties were characterized by the primary creep strain in the first stage and the minimum creep rate in the second stage of creep deformation. Results showed that additions of all three minor alloying elements (Fe, Cu and Mg) demonstrated a beneficial effect on the creep resistance but individual alloying elements exhibited different impacts on creep properties. The additions of Fe and Mg showed a strong impact on both the primary creep strain and minimum creep rate, while the Cu addition displayed a favorable effect on the primary creep strain but no impact on the minimum creep rate. Microstructure observation revealed that with increasing Fe contents, the volume fraction of fine intermetallic dispersoids gradually increased while the subgrain size and misorientation angle became smaller, providing strong barriers to the dislocation and grain boundary movements. The addition of Cu moderately reduced the subgrain size and misorientation angle and in combination of solid solution strengthening it promoted the retardation of the creep deformation during the primary stage.INTRODUCTIONThe 8xxx aluminum conductor alloys offer significant advantages such as low density, high conductivity to weight ratio and low price over copper conductors and become an attractive candidate in electrical engineering and building wiring (McQueen, Chia, & Starke, 1986; Birol, 2009; Engler, Laptyeva, & Wang, 2013). The mass resistivity of aluminum conductors is one-half of copper conductors. Thus, only one-half the weight of aluminum is required for equivalent capacities. Therefore, this unique property coupled with a relatively low price of aluminum offers significant economic advantage to develop aluminum conductor alloys for electrical applications in the electrical wire industry."

"The recent opening of Muscocho's gold mine at Montauban, as weil as the discovery of several new copper-gold showings of a similar nature near the confluence of the Saguenay and St , Lawrence has revealed the existence of a new metallogenic gold province which is located within supercrustal units of Helikian age within the Grenville Province. Three metalliferous belts have been identified, each one of which is related to a series of SW-NE trending faults. The first is located in southeastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec. The second extends from the Balmat-Pierrepont mining district of New York State up to the Lac St. Jean region of Quebec, and includes the Montauban camp. The third follows the St. Lawrence river in Charlevoix County and along the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.The gold mineralization which is present in the central portion of the Grenville Province is of two types: either stratiform or vein. Deposits of the first type, of which the Muscocho is the type locality, are economically the more interesting of the two. Not only is this mineralization stratiform, but also shows a distinct affinity to AI-rich, Mg-rich or calc-silicate-rich bands. As is the case with the Bousquet and Hemlo regions of the Superior Province, they are associated with layers which are rich in sillimanite and occasionally staurolite. A second parallel between the Bousquet and Montauban deposits might be the presence of manganesian gamets, which have been recognized at the two localities. Some of the mineralization in the central Grenville Province is located within thin bands of iron formation which are rich in arsenic.The stratiform gold deposits of the central Grenville Province are of exhalative origin and are located within a volcano-sedimentary terrane. It is probable that a part of the gold present in these Helikian deposits have been derived by remobilization of Archean mineralization. The vein showings form as a consequence of the remobilization of the Helikian strata during the Grenville metamorphism,"

"The development and industrial applications of magnetic liners have been around for decades. A Swedish company SKEGA first introduced the rubber magnetic liner, and then followed by the Chinese metal magnetic liners. Traditionally, both liners were used in secondary and regrind ball mills, especially for ores containing magnetic materials. Mostly steel balls or equivalent forged balls, usually below 60 mm in diameter, were used as grinding media. With the development of mineral resources over the years, SAG mills and larger ball mills have become the dominating components for comminution circuit design globally. Due to the larger ball mills and thus larger grinding balls (up to 80 mm) especially in non-ferrous metal industry, the application of magnetic liners has been very limited. Based on the new development of materials, the HMR Group Limited has been exploring new designs of magnetic liners which led to the invention of the Nano Steel Magnetic Liner (NSML). Recently, NSML had a successful application in a 5.5m x 6.5m ball mill with 80 mm balls at the Erdenet Copper Mine in Mongolia. Although the first set of liner had a service life of 12 months, the design of the second set was modified and improved to accommodate the operating conditions, which is expected to reach least 24 months service life. The original manganese steel liner only had about 8 months liner life.1. IntroductionMineral processing is an essential operation for the development and utilization of mineral resources. The effective concentration of various useful minerals depends on sufficient liberation of the mineral particles in the ore. The feed stock of copper fire refining processes consists of two major constituents: blister copper and high-Cu secondary scrap. A large fraction of this secondary scrap, originating from urban mining, is quite high in impurities such as Fe, Ni, Pb and Sn. Problems arise in electro-refining when these elements exceed certain limits. As a consequence, transformation of the secondary copper raw materials into high grade copper has become troublesome. However, the behavior of impurities relevant to fire refining conditions, essential for anode refineries, has not been studied in detail. Furthermore, limited research has been performed on the distribution of Ni between copper metal and slag. In this study, equilibration at 1300°C of liquid Cu-1wt.% Ni alloy and CaO-CuOx- FeOy-SiO2 slag in vacuum sealed quartz ampoules was performed for 12 hours, followed by water quenching. Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis was employed to investigate the composition of the equilibrated alloy and slag. The distribution coefficients of Ni between slag and alloy were determined as a function of oxygen partial pressure and CaO concentration. INTRODUCTION Europe’s initiatives for a circular economy, pushing for resource-efficient ways for a sustainable future, puts Europe at the forefront of the globe. In Europe, 50% of the copper originates from recycling, being an excellent example of Europe’s circular economy (Juncker, 2018; Lacasse, 2018). High-grade copper recyclates are made available which regularly contain impurities like Fe, Ni, Sn and Pb. Aurubis Belgium is responsible for recycling these types of recyclates to anodes, cathodes and copper products. However, after fire refining of copper, the aforementioned impurities remain in the anode copper, leading to problems in electrorefining. During the fire refining of copper, a CaO-“Cu2O”-“Fe2O3”-SiO2 slag is used. Fundamental information of the distribution of impurities between the copper and this slag system is therefore essential to understand and improve the copper fire refining process at Aurubis Belgium.

Des quartzites très pars ont été dêcouverts au cours de la cartographie de la region du lac des Martres, étape de l'étude géologique de la region de Charlevoix. On distingue quatre groupes métasédimentaires, tons con tenant des niveaux de quartzite dans an moins deux domaines géologiques différents, c'est à l'ouest, clans le domaine gneisso-charnockitique que se situent les quartzites du groupe des Martres. Quartzite et gneiss à grenat et sillimanite, en banes épais, constituent la formation de La Galette. A Pest, dans un environnement gneisso-granitique, les deux groupes métasédimentaires de Saint-Siméon, et de La Malbaie comprennent, par contraste, des bancs pen épais et de compositions variées. Les niveaux de quartzite dépassent rarement 50 m d'épaisseur. L'autre groupe metasédimentaire, celui de Saint-Tite des Caps, recoupé de nombreuses intrusions charnockitiques et granitiques, ne possède que de minces niveaux de quartzite. La pureté et la grande épaisseur des quartzites de La Galette suppose une histoire complexe qui se termine par des depots continentaux de climat aride, par opposition aux depots marins des autres groupes. D'autre part, la presence de ces quartzites an sein de roches Presque anhy¬dres et de haute temperature que sont les charnockites leur confère des caractéristiques de fusion sans decrepitation. Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existe clans le monde, peu sont de qualité supérieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement à ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-Unis, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de l'Afrique du Sud. D'accès facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'à une trentaine de milles de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le Saint-Laurent. L'utilisation en metallurgic prévue pour le quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro¬silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium. La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriée pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. Les fines peu¬vent être utilisées pour la fabrication du verre et comme matière de charge.

"I am very pleased to be a member on this panel today because abrasion and wear in mills has been part of my life over the past forty years. My presentation will deal with the role Ni-Hard has played in combating wear and abrasion in mills. Before Ni-Hard came along, unalloyed white iron was used in ball mills and one of the most popular types of white iron liners was the pocket liner. Slide #1 illustrates the design of the pocket liner used at Dome Mines in their 5' x 22' pebble mills. The pockets filled with grinding media and it was on this that the wear took place. The concept is not unlike the new magnetic liner which utilizes the ore and grinding media to form the wearing surface. In this slide please note the tapered pocket type of cored bolt holes. If cored bolt holes do not fill with grinding media there could be excessive grooving or wear at that area. Therefore all cored bolt holes should be tapered in this manner.Before Inco patented the name Ni-Hard several foundries were making the alloy iron under different brand names such as Diamond Alloy, Mitchelloy and Specialloy. In the early days some of the Ni-Hard was poor quality. Inco provided foundries with technical knowhow and provided assistance to licence them to sell under the name of Ni-Hard. This was in the late 1920's. The material we are discussing is Ni-Hard type I with the following analysis (slide #2). It is a martensitic white iron with BHN of 550 - 600 and is a relatively easy alloy to produce in either a cupola or electric furnace. The annual average production of Ni-Hard in North America is 90,000 tons with mill liners making up 25,000 tons and grinding media 30,000 tons, according to Warren Spear of Inco."
