In the past two decades the global metalliferous mineral industry has trended away from pyrometallurgical (pyromet) and towards hydrometallurgical (hydromet) technologies including biometallurgical (biomet) processes. Pyromet, biomet and hydromet technologies have all developed considerably over this period. New projects have been biased or directed by legislation towards supposedly cleaner and greener hydromet and biomet technologies. The environmental cost and energy cost of pyromet production processes for copper and cobalt are compared with comparable hydromet processes using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The æreal costÆ of the global warming obsession and negative public perception of pyrometallurgy include greater carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption per unit, associated with current hydromet technologies. Specific examples for copper and cobalt produced via the different routes are provided. The poor science involved with the global warming hypothesis is discussed. The use of LCA with sensitivity analysis as a decision making tool for mineral processing projects and technology developers is discussed.

A computer simulation is being developed for in-situ leaching of unbroken, Zn-Pb-Ag sulphide ore. Ferric chloride is the selected reagent. Experimental work showed that a diffusion control model of the kinetic aspects was better than a surface chemical reaction control model. Entrapped reactive grains were accessible to reagent in the samples tested. Precipitated sulphur did not seriously hinder the reaction.

Over a four year period from 1984 to 1987, a broad range of ground conditions were experienced in recovering old workings at the Walhalla mine in central-eastern Victoria. Access to the ore zone was gained via old workings and new development. The work included: Recovery of vertical and inclined shafts. Recovery of collapsed winzes. Recovery of level drives and crosscuts. Spiling through broken ground and old mullock. Pre-grouting of caved zones. New development using small-scale rail equipment and "bobcat" Loaders.

Zhangmatun Iron Mine is situated in the suburbs of Jinan city, Shandong, China. Because of surface environmental constraints, no suitable site can be selected to dispose of mill waste. The full mill tailings must be disposed of underground. This paper deals with the work conducted at Zhangmatun mine to develop a total tailings backfill system, taking advantage of a doubleshaft blade mixer and an activating agitator to prepare backfill. Cement and ground slag are added to tailings for strength development. Two stopes have been filled and the pillars have been effectively mined out during the field trial. The application of innovative total tailings backfill technology is a new concept at the mine. Detailed planning has achieved a close integration of mining, milling and backfilling. Full mill tailings, with or without rock, are disposed of underground in a continuous process to fill, totally and systematically, the cavities formed by mining. Utilisation of cemented tailings backfill solves not only the problem of disposal of mill waste, but also the resource problem of providing backfill materials to the mine. The strategy also maximises ore recovery for the mine.

With the advent of increased environmental regulation and high penalties for non-compliance in many countries, there has grown a need for all industries to assess their risk with respect to environmental compliance and consequently develop management systems which ensure environmental compliance and sound environmental practice. The need to better assess and manage environmental risk has developed rapidly as legal and financial penalties have increased for inappropriate management of the environment. The mechanism that industry has developed to manage risk is through the use of environmental management systems. These environmental management systems are generally based on the principles of total quality management. For example the British Standard BS7750 (Specification for Environmental Management System) shares common management system principles with ISO 9000 quality management systems. The same trends of increased environmental regulation and higher penalties for environmental impairment are now evident in Australia where environmental management systems are now being introduced. With increased penalties for environmental impairment and greater responsibility of managers and directors, environmental management systems are likely to become even more common in Australia. This paper describes some of the influences directing environmental management within the Australian industrial and mining environment, describes the elements of an environmental management system and relates these to the mining industry.

The Olympic Dam mineral discovery by Western Mining Corporation (WMC) in South Australia has been shown to contain one of the world's largest known deposits of copper and uranium; gold and silver are also present. Development of the deposit jointly by WMC and the BP Group is awaiting commitment, with planning based on initial production of gold in 1987 and copper and uranium in 1988.

In 2003, NEWMONT MINING CORPORATION, the worldÆs largest gold producer, set out to prove that High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology is sufficiently robust and reliable to be considered for the treatment of hard rock gold ores. In collaboration with POLYSIUS, a significant trial was conducted and 127 600 tonnes processed, successfully proving the HPGR capabilities on the Lone Tree Mine, Nevada ore û one of the most competent and abrasive ores in the industry. Fletcher Challenge Limited through its subsidiary Grampian Mining Co Ltd has carried out an ore evaluation of one of New Zealand's largest known deposits of ilmenite located at Barrytown on the west coast of the -South Island, New Zealand.The ilmenite is located in a beach sand environment which has previously been mined for gold. Two analytical techniques were developed to quantify the resource. Considerable difficulty was experienced in this phase of the evaluation due to the presence of major inclusions within the ilmenite grains. Wet and dry concentration circuits, utilizing spiral, wet magnet, high tension and plate electrostatic separators have been G47designed to produce ilmenite from the ore. Studies to utilize the titanium content of the Barrytown ilmenite have been made. Recent work has been directed towards a titanium dioxide pigment process.

A selection of Australian washed coal samples was examined to determine the effect of sample hydrophobicity (rank) and particle size on froth stability in the flotation process. The results indicate distinct rank-based variations in froth volume and stability for flotation tests conducted without the use of collector, over a series of particle size distributions.High-rank coals showed a greater tendency to generate stable, high-volume froths than coals of lower rank. Implications for circuit design and operation are outlined.

The rate of development achieved using this technology is improved by modifications to this technology using additional equipment such as surge cars or decreasing roof bolting time.Development rates achieved with this technology compare with developing technologies such as high capacity continuous miners, continuous transportation and simultaneous cutting and bolting systems such as the Kemcol Beaver. This paper describes a steam outburst in a metal mine which occurred in December 1992 in Japan, resulting in two fatalities. The outburst occurred just after blasting in a heading face 600 m below surface (SL-50 m), 1664 m from a mouth of the mine. The scale of the outburst was large and the fragments of the outburst spread up to 34 m from the face, the total volume of the outburst was estimated to be 206 m3. The outburst materials were mostly clay originated from the typical surrounding rock of sulfide ore and basalt. The shape of the larger outburst fragments were slabs with a thickness of 10 to 20 cm. The victims were found in a main ventilation air shaft, 175 m and 380 m from the face, respectively. The mine mainly produces copper, lead and zinc. The face was ventilated by a 560 mm diameter duct with a fan and the strata temperature of the rock was estimated to be in the range of 120 to 140¦C. There is a famous hot spring near the mine. A thorough investigation into the unprecedented accident was made including an on-site inspection and investigation of rock characteristics in laboratories.
