It is a well known fact that the best method of rock reinforcement is to avoid physical ground support. This goal can be achieved by means of: - Increasing the rock structural strength - Geological definition and forecasting. - Sequencing the excavation - Smooth blasting In many cases however, extra ground support is needed in order to maintain safe working conditions. In an open pit, the structural strength of rock cannot be increased by lowering the pit walls due to economical reasons. Economy demands steeper walls and less waste to be hauled to the dump. The geological conditions can also often be extremely poor and unpredictable. For excavation sequencing and smooth blasting there are good possi- bilities, such as cleaning of the pit walls after the main excavation, arul- ing of long small diameter straight inclined holes, use of smooth blasting techniques and lightened explosives.

Technical applications of computers within the coal industry are expanding rapidly with an increase in the number of users and user locations. Collinsville Coal Company Pty Ltd is an example of a remote and growing user company which has a Telecom link to MIM's ICL mainframe computer in Brisbane. The Planning Department is one of the technical user departments at Collinsville, with a variety of VDU, plotting and screen graphics hardware supported by the MIM Computing network. Current applications involve the storage, retrieval and manipulation of borehole information, plan and map production, volume calculations from survey data and mine ventilation modelling for underground Operations.

Within the project against pollution in the Gulf of Naples (Italy) it was envisaged to build a sewage collection tunnel whose tunnelling section is about 30 m2 and whose length is over 4 km. The formations to be bored through feature heteregeneous volcanic deposits made up of either lenses or lava, lapilli and pozzolan layers and ashstone silts. The cover ranges between 10 and 30 metres. The surface is heavily built-up requiring then an accurate monitoring and reduction of noise, vibrations and settlements. The building of the tunnel is therefore carried out by means of a boom tunnelling machine equipped with a mechanized shield. Support along the complete excavation perimeter is provided by linerplates together with an immediate cement grouting behind them. At a later stage the concrete lining will be cast in place.

The desorption of gold from activated carbon is promoted by adding organic solvents to aqueous cyanide solutions. At 65-80¦ the elution of gold is fast and is not affected by water quality. ABSTRAC'T' Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of younger Pacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

The difference between a hypothetical and a theoretical approach is considered and the advantages in using a hypothesis is discussed. Virgin horizontal stresses play an important role in stabilising strata which bridge across an excavation, and reduces the tensile stresses which develop in a beam subjected to bending. Simple formulae are deduced for the bridging of a thick massive stratum under such conditions. At shallow depths, tensile failure on the upper side of the beam is the most likely cause of fracture, but below a certain depth this gives place to compressive failure on the underside, with the possible incidence of rock bumps. The presence of strong massive beds delay the onset of subsidence and may restrict the width of the subsidence trough. If the material involved in the caving is strong, this will reduce the final subsidence, especially at shallow depths. The British regulations for the control of aquifers and their dependence on the strain developed at the seabed are discussed. As an alternative, the concept of a disturbance factor is introduced to permit the consider- ation of aquifers at depth, leading to an explanation of the make of water on the first faces to be mined in the Selby Coalfield. 'Elie paper closes with a brief consideration of the different roles played by longwall face supports in the control of readily cavable strata, and the control of strong beds which hold up in the waste.

This paper deals briefly with three of the more controversial aspects of the geology of the Mount Isa ore deposits namely the geologic structures, the method of ore deposition and the origin of the ore.In the section on geologic structures, an outline is first given of the purely tectonic deformation advocated by the early authors. The current interpretation, which differs in the proposed order of events and causal forces, is then discussed. Other concepts, which attribute all or part of the deformation to sedimentary features or preconsolidation movement, are outlined ilnd commented on.The remaining two sections deal mainly with the better known lead-zinc orebodies. In the first of these a brief description and criticism is given of the early interpretation which was based on the deposition of successive waves of mineralisation which replacedindividual beds in the shales. The current ideas, which visualise emplacement of the ore between the beds rather than replacement of them, is then discussed. The final section develops the case for a sedimentary origin of the lead-zinc ores and broadly outlines the author's ideas concerning the evolution of the Mount Isa ore deposits.INTRODUCTIONAny consideration of the geology of Mount Isa must begin with the work of Blanchard and continue with that of Hall. Individually, or as co-authors, they published various papers on the geology of Mount Isa. Of these, the best known is their "Rock Deformation and Mineralisation at Mount Isa" (1941) which gave a comprehensive account of all aspects of Mount Isa geology.It is necessary to appreciate the limits set on geological knowledge of the mine and environs in 1941 by the extent of mine development and regional geologic studies. Underground, 7 level (897 ft.) was the lowest producing level. The Rivera Crystalline Island (RCI) is an erosional window of the intracontinental Parana Basin that outcrops in the Rivera Department, north of Uruguay. RCI is made up mainly by Precambrian granites, metasediments and granite-gneisses. This island is crosscut by a dextral transcurrent shear zone system, the Rivera Shear System (RSS). The bulk strain ellipsoid was defined by previous work and has allowed the evaluation of shear dynamics. The geometry of the shear system is made up of two shear directions: E-W (P-shear), which turn right to NW-SE direction (R-shear), leading to the development of extensional bends. The shear zone system was developed in brittle-ductile to brittle regimes, under temperature conditions compatible with greenschist facies metamorphism. The shear zones are marked by an intensive fracture cleavage development. Mylonites develop only in narrow, discontinuous higher strain zones. Internally, the shear zones are dominated by intrusive rocks, mainly granites, dacites and diorites. Hydrothermal alteration has been developed in several areas.The economic significance of RCI is given by several small gold deposits, which have been exploited since 1869. One major new gold mine is under development, the San Gregorio Gold Mine. This gold deposit is locally controlled by a dilatant site where R-shear turns right to P-shear. Mine lithologies were deeply altered by hydrothermal fluids in the dilatant structure. This work presents the lineament-structural analysis carried out to identify similar structural patterns in all RCI sites favourable to host other gold deposits. The exploration program also considered remote sensing, geology, geophysical and geochemical survey.

A laminar-flow furnace was used to study the combustion of four flotation concentrates (chalcopyrite, pyrite, galena, and sphalerite) in air at temperatures up to 1400¦C. A special- Iv developed two-colour pyrometer was used to measure the temperature of individual chalco- pvrite and pyrite particles as they underwent combustion. Chalcopyrite and pyrite ignited with very high rates of reaction at air tempera- tures above 480 and 600¦C respectively, forming molten products. Galena and sphalerite required temperatures in excess of 700 and 1200¦ respect- ively to attain equivalent rates of reaction. The high rates of reaction for galena and spha- lerite were caused by vaporization. Models of the genesis of existing ore oodles and targetting of exploration for new mines are greatly enhanced by an-understanding of the plate tectonic environment existing at the time of mineral emplacement. In areas of recent or active tectonism, a study of the present-day crustal and upper mantle structure is an obvious starting point in unravelling the evolution of the accessible upper crust. Bougainville is the northern-most island in the Solomon Islands arc. A 7km deep trench almost 100km off its western coast marks the commencement of subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath the Pacific plate. As outlined by the seismicity, the subducted crustal slab under the southern half of Bougainville reaches the axis of the island at about 100km depth, from which point it dips near vertically another 300km into the upper mantle. Large surface blasts at the Bougainville Copper Mine at Panguna, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea were used to derive an unreversed upper crustal profile of the island. The crust appears to be relatively simple, being comprised of a 5km deep layer with a P-wave velocity of 4.5km/sec, overlying a l0km thick layer with a P-wave velocity of 7.2km/sec. Constraints on the 15km mantle depth were provided by the identification of both P to and S to P phase conversions of seismic waves from local shallow earthquakes at the Moho boundary. An upper mantle velocity of 7.95(¦ 0.15) km/sec was measured from travel times of selected shallow earthquakes along the strike of the island arc.

The hydraulic-stowing mining method is most effective for mining thick coal seams. It is superior to the sliced cover- caving and artificial mining method and the fully mechanized sublevel-caving mining method for the following reasons - a much higher recovery rate is achieved, there is much less surface subsidence and roof pressure, there is no hidden danger of gob fire, and much less methane emission and coal dust problems, etc.. However, its superiority is overshadowed by its backward stowing technique which makes mechanisation of mining and stowing difficult, causes bleed water interference to production and to the environment and is uneconomic because of the high cost of stowing material. These disadvantages limited its application to coal seams that are difficult and not suitable to be mined by other mining methods. The remedy is in reforming it thoroughly to permit mining of otherwise unminable seams and this paper presents the reformation.

The advancement of computer applications in the coal industry is focusing interest on the presentation of washability data by mathematical functions.The normal method of presenting washability data is in the form of five curves, usually filled by eye or by cubic spline functions. It has been shown that coal washability can be characterised by two basic relations: the instantaneous ash vs relative density relationship and the instantaneous yield vs relative density relationship. In a new approach to the mathematical modelling of the instantaneous ash vs relative density relationship, theapplication of the algorithm to a data set from a mine in central Queensland was successful.

This paper will discuss specifically the performances of vibrating screens having circular motion with inclined decks and linear motion with horizontal or near horizontal decks and both related mainly to coal, metalliferous, and other granulated solids applications where screening and efficient classification is required. Some misconceptions have been applied in the past with regard to making a screen type selection using either circular throw or linear throw and therefore this paper will endeavour to clarify these misconceptions.

There are many factors influencing the way in which a mining company disposes of tailings. Some of the more important factors include physical and chemical properties of tailings, cost, availability of dam wall construction materials, type of mining operation, topography and environmental constraints. As a result, the mining industry has seen a diverse and innovative range of disposal methods developed to satisfy the many conditions imposed at tailings disposal sites. This paper discusses a range of tailings disposal methods currently practiced in the mining industries in North America. These methods include various inpit disposal techniques, upstream, downstream and centreline dam construction and zoned earthfill or rockfill embankment construction. The thickened tailings disposal method and the disposal of fine clays are discussed. The importance of improving the depositional properties of tailings to enhance storage capacity, water reclaim, dam wall stability and final reclamation is stressed. It is important that mining companies are made aware of the full range of disposal methods and dam construction techniques available today. Such an awareness will help improve the planning, design and construction of safer and more efficient tailings disposal facilities in the future.

An extensive railway construction prog- ram in the People's Republic of China has required the excavation of many tunnels in difficult ground, particularly in mountainous regions. Conclusions drawn from case histories permit guidelines to be formulated as to the optimum location of tunnel alignments in faulted and folded terrains, and also in karst regions. Geological factors adversely affecting durability of tunnel linings can be minimised by adoption of appropriate construc- tion practices.

A multi-layer feed-forward neural network was trained (using the error back-propagation algorithm) to learn a subset of rules designed to stabilise the performances of the copper flotation section of a complex sulphide processing plant and then tested in order to evaluate its expert performances. Two types of neural networks were compared: the classical ones, fully connected between one layer and the adjacents (with different architectures), and entropy networks, partially connected and generated according to a methodology that simplifies its building up. The advantages and drawbacks of both were analysed and compared with classic (rule based) expert systems.

Low tonnage quartz vein-hosted stibnite lodes are widely distributed in rocks of the Tasman Fold Belt System in eastern Queensland, with particular concentrations in the Hodgkinson - Broken River Fold Belt and to a lesser extent in the Gympie Province of the New England Fold Belt: Higher grade deposits have been worked intermittently on a small scale since 1873, resulting in the production of about 5500 tonnes of antimony ore/concentrate with an estimated grade of about 55% Sb. Future production of antimony may be as a by-product from deposits, currently being explored/mined for gold in the Hodgkinson/Mitchell River area and the Amanda Bel goldfield. Establishment of an antimony processing plant in Queensland using the Quelar Process would provide a more reliable market for small producers and could stimulate future exploration and production.

Tuyere coke samples have been taken through the tuyere openings of B.H.P. International Blast Furnaces since 1978 with Whyalla No. 2 Blast Furnace taking samples on a regular basis since 1982. The degradation of coke during it's passage through the Blast Furnace can be measured and the relationships between these data, feed coke data and blast furnace operating data demonstrated. Tuyere coke sampling has been useful in revealing misleading external coke testing results and is still the method to monitor directly the performance of coke within the Blast Furnace.
