The smaller mining company with full ownership of, or participation in, a mining project is generally unable to obtain funding as easily as the major mining house. While the equity market remains the main funding source for small projects, debt fund- ing options are becoming more available. Many international banks possess in-house mine fin- ancing expertise which can assist the smaller company in financing its share of project development. A clear understanding is necessary of both the benefits and limitations of bank funding, to ensure that all potential sources of funds are properly considered and integ- rated into the financial plans of the smaller mining companies.

Subsidence data resulting from longwall mining in the northern part of the Newcastle Coalfield of New South Wales has been reviewed. Themain factors influencing subsidence variability in this area (apart from width/height ratio) are strong bridging strata, the effects of the first major goaf fall, mining direction and depth of cover. In 1987 the NSW Department of Mineral Resources produced a guide to subsidence prediction for the Newcastle Coalfield which is still widely used. The current study shows this guide to be no longer appropriate for this area. An alternative prediction curve, incorporating more recent data, is suggested.

Papua New Guinea is geologically prospective for large, medium and small mineral discoveries. All profitable developments to date have been very large mines but for every large mine there should be many small mines which could be developed under appropriate circumstances.The Papua New Guinea Government should, with appropriate changes to fiscal, legislative and policy regimes, create a favourable exploration envir-onment to encourage a major increase in exploration by small exploration companies and subsequent discoveries and mine development.

The fundamental natural ingredient of any mining development is an ore reserve. The classical definition of an ore reserve has both technical and commercial components, each involving elements of risk. By definition the desposit must contain mineral values which are "extractable at a profit". Metallurgy supplies a vital link between these two basic requirements of a successful mining project; the metallurgical input establishes the process by which the contained minerals may be recovered and converted into marketable product(s).

The perennial challenge facing mining and minerals operators is to improve productivity, usually by a combination of cost reduction and performance improvement. In a typical production situation involving mining and processing activities, the standard approach has long been to seek improvements in each activity, effectively in isolation from each other. However, the realisation is growing that there is considerable potential to achieve really substantial productivity gains by much improved integration of mining and processing with the key being to consider what is best in the total sense. A pilot plant evaluation of the Savmin process, for the purification of mine water was commissioned by Anglogold and conducted at the Stilfontein Gold Mine, Margaret Shaft at Stilfontein in the North West province of South Africa. Economies in cemented fill demand the utilisation of the full potential of the portland cement component of the mix. If declined tailings are used, it is desirable to establish the optimum particle size distribution. Pozzolic materials and slags are. very useful additions to increase the amount of cementitious material through reaction with calcium hydroxide produced by hydration of the cement. It is also essential to check out the presence of substances which may seriously affect the setting and hardening of the cement or the durability of the cement bond. The importance of quality control in the preparation of cemented fill cannot be over Emphasised.

This paper describes the new legislative regime that will apply to the regulation of the minerals industry in New Zealand.The reform of New Zealand's minerals legislation was initiated in January 1988 when the Minister for the Environment, Rt Hon Geoffrey Palmer, announced the Government's intention to review all the major laws governing New Zealand's resources. The Resource Management Bill is scheduled for introduction to the House in December 1989 and its date of enactment is scheduled for June 1990.

The Plant Control and Data Logging System for the Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC) is part of a control and communications network designed to provide a high level of surveillance of open cut plant and facilitate the efficient co- ordination of operations and plant maintenance. The computer system selected utilises a central dual mini-computer and multiple microcomputer data transmission network ,linked to the plant controllers using distributed, microcomputer based remote data collectors or outstations. That gold will dissolve in sodium hyposlphite solutions is known from the lixiviation of silver and gold ores.The gold will dissolve only in small quantities. According to Stetefeldt, if gold leaf is treated for a time with sodium hyposlllphite solutions of varying strengths solution takes place in every instance, the deviation in quantity being very slight.In order to form hyposulphite double-salts, the gold must become oxidised, the oxygen being derived from the air absorbed by the solution. Consequently, it is the quantity of free oxygen in the solution by, which the reaction is determined, as for one equivalent of gold dissolved one equivalent of caustic soda is set free.

The mineralogy of ten trihydrate bauxites and their leached residues from bomb digestion tests at 140, 180 and 2400C was investigated and the resultsòcorrelated with analytical data. It is shown that increased recovery of alumina at high temperatures is due to. the dehydroxylation of goethiteòrather than the presence of alumina monohydrates. The effects of aluminous goethite -on the interpretation of "available alumina". results-and normative analysis are discussed and it is concluded that,'cautionòmust be exercised in interpreting the results of bomb digestion tests in terms of alumina hvdrates.

Haematite Recovery from a Tailings Stream Laboratory and pilot scale testing were carried out in 1999 on a tailing sample from a North American iron ore plant using gravity, magnetic and flotation techniques. The ore contained 16 per cent iron mainly in the fine (-38 ¦m) size fraction. Two methods of evaluating the separation efficiency were used; Selectivity Index and Z factor analysis. Tabling and magnetic separation produced poor results, with flotation testing showing some promise, generating concentrates assaying more than 40 per cent Fe. High grade concentrates containing more than 67 per cent Fe were generated using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig, and it was recommended that this technique be pursued at a larger scale to verify the results obtained.

This paper looks at the problems associated with surface settlements and other subsidence effects from the underground extraction of coal in relation to consent applications under the Resource Management Act. The main features of subsidence are examined with respect to identifying the adverse effects as defined under the RMA. Particular attention is paid to sites where little or no data is available as in the case of greenfield sites or at mines where new or different mining methods are being introduced. In these situations it is not possible to make accurate predictions of settlements or strains and therefore other factors need to be considered. The long term effects which might occur post mining are examined in relation to mitigation and management options.

PT Allied Indo Coal is the owner of the Parambahan Open Cut Coal Mine in the Ombilin Basin in West Sumatera with an annual production of in excess of 0.5 million tonnes/year of saleable coal.The parent company Allied Queensland Coal was one of the first foreign companies granted a contract of work. by the Indonesian Government. PT Allied Indo Coal is therefore a contractor to the Indonesian Government and pays a 20 per cent royalty of all coal mined.

The complicated mining-geological conditions in the Kuzbass have led to some difficult mining situations in the past. Now, with historical data, supplemented by geomechanical information and measurements, together with an appropriate kinematic theory, a more reliable basis exists for prediction and control of the geomechanical state during extraction, with caving and with backfilling. Continued progress and improving reliability comes from data banks and computations, and now prediction of geomechanical situations is upgraded by more routing measurements and monitoring. Not only in the Kuzbass, but throughout the USSR, 14 dedicated groups are ready to solve various specific problems of prediction an control of geomechanic situations with assured increase in the quality of mining.
