The earliest caveman, very much a minority group, in the face of great adversity and person- al peril, had to take his livelihood by stealth or force of arms - aided by some degree of reas- on and ingenuity. He was pretty much a law unto himself. As time went on, his type became more numerous; and, after bumping heads with the- tough bloke who lived in the cave across the valley, he decided that perhaps he ought to try to get along with him. Perhaps he could trade some over-ripe emu meat for that `roo skin that he had tried to take. Then too, next time he wants a woman, he had better use a lighter club and just stun her a little - that last one was pretty badly bashed. Perhaps he should keep her around the cave and train her to keep the fire going, gather some roots, and skin the game. Those joeys of hers are kind of cute too. Of course they eat, and it would necessitate bringing in more food. So man gained increasing responsib- ilities to his family and neighbours. He domesticated animals, learned that he could cultivate certain plants that were palat- able and would supplement the meat diet, and found that he could modify earth materials to make tools - he became a grazier, a farmer, a miner and a manufacturer. He ceased to be nom- adic and community life came into being. This complicated life and made more rules essential.

Suppliers of products and services have a pivotal role in sustainable development in the mining and minerals industry. Reputable suppliers know their products and services, and the industry, and have unique knowledge of these in relation to their customerÆs needs. Petroleum hydrocarbon suppliers, in particular, impact upon a mineÆs sustainability because of the extensive reach of petroleum hydrocarbons into the mining and minerals life-cycle. The petroleum hydrocarbon life-cycle is a useful framework to enable engagement between supplier and customer on the issue of sustainability. The life-cycle starts with supply of fuels, lubricants and services at the mine, through to plant operation and maintenance, transport of mined products, ship loading, and finally through to mineral processing and other downstream value-adding. There are barriers to leveraging supplierÆs capabilities which have to be overcome before the industry will gain the potential benefits from such supplier engagement.

In general, modern mining companies all over the world have to face the same economic circumstances as any other part of the industry: considering the tough competition, production and haulage costs must be reduced permanently whereas productivity has to increase substantially in order to remain price-competitive. However, the imposed pressure also offers the chance for consideration of alternative mining concepts, the application of which can result in substantial cost savings and improvements in the quality of the mined material. As one of these alternative mining concepts, surface mining technology offers substantial improvements in productivity. It also influences aspects of haulage, such as safety and speed, in a positive way. The capability of selective mining ties in nicely with the production of small-sized crushed material, the granulometry of which allows the elimination of the primary crusher. Mine operators profit from reduced costs for the maintenance of their haulage vehicles due to reduced wear, a decreased likelihood of accidents and higher average transport speeds. Surface Miners can also be used to cut haul roads into virgin rocks and leave a clean and level surface behind, improving the quality of these created roads. Thus, it is even possible to use ordinary road trucks for transport in mines. The current paper outlines in detail the effects of the surface mining technology on mining and haulage aspects and reports on applications where substantial cost savings could be achieved due to the application of what is also referred to as æsimple mining processÆ.

Methane and fire hazards have a vital effect on work safety and continuity of mining plant operation. In the 1990s, the SMP hazards monitoring and ventilation control systems, based on continuous measurement of air parameters, were put into operation at nearly 30 Polish mines. These systems provide continuous measurement of methane concentration within the range of zero to 100 per cent with automatic switching off of electrical energy immediately after detection of potentially explosive conditions. Early detection of coal spontaneous combustion and open fires is made by continuous measurements of CO, CO2, smoke and O2 content in mine air as well as temperature changes in air and rock mass. The essence of the system is intrinsic safety of all underground instrumentation and uninterrupted central power supply from the surface. All abnormal and critical states are signalled to the mine control room. These trigger alarm and emergency procedures. The computer based ventilation monitoring and control system also performs the function of an expert system for fire detection and underground fire fighting. The mine control operator (dispatcher) makes use of stored data in computer escape route schemes and procedures for the safe withdrawal of miners from hazardous areas. The operator can put in motion intrinsically safe alarm signalling units and banners with programmed messages indicating escape routes.

The processes that take place during the development of a heating are difficult to visualise. Bulk coal self-heating tests at The University of Queensland (UQ) using a two-metre column are providing graphic evidence of the stages that occur during a heating. Data obtained from these tests, both temperature and corresponding off-gas evolution can be transformed into what is effectively a video-replay of the heating event. This is achieved by loading both sets of data into a newly developed animation package called Hotspot. The resulting animation is ideal for spontaneous combustion training purposes as the viewer can readily identify the different hot spot stages and corresponding off-gas signatures. Colour coding of the coal temperature, as the hot spot forms, highlights its location in the coal pile and shows its ability to migrate upwind. An added benefit of the package is that once a mine has been tested in the UQ two-metre column, there is a permanent record of that particular coals performance for mine personnel to view.

In the recent years several new blasting technologies have come into use in surface mines. Electronic initiation, low-density emulsion explosives and modelling software are in regular use throughout the world. In Australia, these new technologies have achieved significant application, largely in open cut coal mines where more than 20 per cent of blasting is now conducted with electronic initiation systems. These new techniques have contributed to the vast improvement in blasting outcomes evidenced by increased recovery of saleable product and faster excavation rates. In large surface mines, OricaÆs unique combination of electronic initiation systems, bulk emulsion explosives and modelling software can be harnessed to target critical value outcomes. This includes targeting better fragmentation, increased ore uncovery rates and better wall stability û all adding to improved mining operation profitability. Orica Mining Services have combined these technologies into a set of offerings called Blast Based Services (BBSÖ). The paper describes applications of these new technologies and possible benefits in large surface mines.

In order to understand the effect of oxygen injection into the molten metal on the valuable metals (VM) recovery and interfacial phenomena, several high-temperature experiments were conducted using a high-frequency induction furnace with a quartz tube as the reaction chamber at 1673 K. Copper-based waste printed circuit board (PCB) that contains some impurities was selected as the end-of-life resource. CaO-SiO2 based pre-fused slag and oxygen gas were used in present works. The composition change and microstructure of the samples were analysed. As oxygen was injected into the system, impurities were rapidly removed. After the removal of impurities, continuously injected oxygen lowered interfacial tension between liquid slag and liquid metal. Lowered interfacial tension induced Cu loss into the slag.

In recent years in New Zealand there have been a number of tunnelling and deep directionally drilled pipelines projects that have required access shafts. Often these shafts are in urban environmentswhere vibration and high noise levels are not tolerable. There are a number of methodologies that can be adopted dependent upon the shaft plan area, depth and geology.This paper will describe some different methodologies that can be adopted that use piling methods such as large diameter piles, and secant piles. The paper will use case studies to highlight:· construction methodology,· specific methodology issues and constraints,· lessons learnt, and· recommended specifications.The development of piling technologies in New Zealand has enabled the development of cost effective solutions for the construction of deep shafts in sensitive urban environments.

This presentation discusses a water filtration technology termed Fabric Media that is somewhat novel to the Australian market place and reports several recent mining industry installations. Like many novel household cleaning products, the Fabric Media technology applies the science of active washable micro fibres as the means of capturing contaminant solid particles. The simple Fabric Media water filtration product offers several attractive attributes when compared to the more traditional media bed filtration processes such as sand filters, and barrier filters such as micro membranes. A micro fibre based filtration media enables both superior adsorption for the contaminant and wash ability. Stronger adsorption capture enables a much higher flux and greater solids loading density for the filtration task, meaning that lower cost and smaller footprint equipment is available. For Fabric Media water filters, a textile weave is selected that minimises the flow backpressure for a given particle size separation. Thus for an equivalent filtration performance this provides a much lower operating energy requirement, generally between 50 and 80 per cent less than for a sand filter. A Fabric Media is not abrasive to itself or to the filter tank. The filtration performance remains constant and predictable. The equipment life is much longer and the asset value of the new filtration equipment should maintain throughout the project life. Fibres are extremely mechanically robust and chemically inert. Fabric Media survives repetitive exposure to a rapid mechanical washing event providing high wash efficiency with minimum equipment off-line time for the backwash. Dislodging captured contaminants by a high-speed mechanical agitation enables a minimum off-line time during backwash events. The vigorous backwash destroys adhering flocculant and eliminates the formation of mud balls, which can permanently foul sand filters. The mechanical agitation wash of the Fabric Media water filter ensures complete removal of grease and biofilm, which can adhere and block a membrane surface. In comparison to sand filters and micro filtration membranes, the Fabric Media product is applicable to a significantly wider range of solids concentrations without permanent damage. The technology is very forgiving to excursion in plant control and is therefore considered a very operator-friendly concept.

As valuable minerals are more disseminated, there is a need for low-grade ores to be finely ground to liberate these valuable minerals. However, this has a negative impact on ultrafine mineral recovery as conventional separations processes such as gravity separation are no longer effective. Instead, fine particles can be recovered by froth flotation. Various novel reagents have been introduced along with development in flotation cell designs such as Jameson cell and column cells to improve performance and recovery of ultrafine valuables. This study, on the other hand, aims to recover the fines using a combination of commercially available reagents to selectively flocculate the valuables, so they are large enough to be recovered via conventional froth flotation cells. This technique if successful can be implemented in many existing industries that continue to use mechanical flotation cells that require particle sizes to be 50–150 μm for effective recovery (Ralston, 1992; Batterham and Moodie, 2005). Selective flocculation is not widely implemented in industries mainly due to the inability to float the aggregates ones they are formed and gangue entrapment within the aggregates which consequently affects the grade of concentrate recovered (Forbes, 2011). The major goal is to aggregate the minerals and float the aggregates unlike the more common industrial technique such as reverse flotation of hematite, where the aggregates itself is not recovered via flotation.

Geophysics is playing an increasingly important role in the exploration industry. In the soft rock scene the application of seismic techniques is basically mandatory prior to any drilling program. Simply, this is because, in a majority of situations, the seismic method is ideally suited to mapping accurately relatively flat lying strata and displaying structures that may host oil or gas. It is worth stressing that seismic methods do not delineate oil or gas but they map well in two or three dimensions. In the base metal arena, geophysical methods used are generally focussed on direct detection methods with the mapping application not often used except in potential fields (magnetics and gravity). The success rate in the last decade has not been good but this does not only apply to the application of geophysics; it really applies across the board of exploration techniques. Both geological and geochemical exploration have not had a success rate commensurate with the funds injected. Basically in the last ten years we have failed as explorers! As explorers we have been negligent in mapping. As geoscientists we have let the basic mapping and observation skills diminish û the old adage æboots on the groundÆ is still applicable but are we doing enough of it? The answer is clearly no. As explorers the huge burden of bureaucracy, eg Government Acts û local, state and federal, safety compliance, environmental compliance, etc has reduced the ægeologicalÆ time dramatically. This has culminated in an over-reliance on quick fix solutions, eg spot the bump geophysics or geochemistry. This obviously simplistic scenario is arguable but there is no doubt in the geoscientific areas we have failed in the last decade to provide adequate geoscientific maps to assist in exploration. This failure could partially be responsible for the current demise of the industry resulting in a reduction in exploration dollars and, hence, people. This trend is seen acutely in the geophysical area where the head count in comparison with the geological fraternity is low. Other trends during this downturn are inevitable as explorers maximise the use of the dollar in exploration and diminish spending on advances in geophysics. Improvements are being seen however in geophysical equipment, although it is considered that the main improvement will be in the interpretation of data. Specifically, the trend will be towards integrating geophysical data into geological, geochemical and spatial data sets producing quality interpretation and providing low risk drill targets. Examples of the current trends in hardware and future directions are discussed below. In interpretive schemes there are very few examples of integrated interpretation but the possible trends will be discussed with limited examples.

Geostatistical simulation has been widely used in mineral resource classification of metalliferous deposits based on international standards such as JORC code which is one of the most extensively used around the world for reporting the mineral resources and ore reserves alongside with objectives of the companies (Sadeghi, Madani and Carranza, 2015). However, the modeling process becomes challenging whenever the relationship between the variables of interest is complicated and cumbersome to model. This characteristic sometimes manifests itself in complex spatial and global cross-correlation measures, deeply depending on the formation and genesis of the deposit. The objective then is to generate the models that not only reproduces these significant characteristics, but also, it leads to a better understanding of a mineral resource estimation and successive decision-makings. In this respect, there are different approaches taking into account the spatial correlation structures, for which can be classified as independent simulation, co-simulation, and factor-based methodologies. In this paper, three techniques: Turning Bands Independent Simulation (TBSIM), Turning Bands Co-Simulation (TBCOSIM) and Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform (PPMT); from those aforementioned approaches are selected to model two cross-correlated variables (Iron and Aluminum Oxide) belonging to an Iron ore deposit located in Brazil, in order to examine which methodology better reproduces the corresponding complexity in terms of local correlation measure. Rock masses when subjected to uniaxial or triaxial cyclic loading (eg in hydraulic running tunnels, during retrieval and injection of oil and gas from storage underground caverns and haulage roads), the material has a tendency to fail in fatigue. In order to design safe and reliable underground structures, the determination of brittleness under such loading conditions becomes a pre-requisite. Brittleness influences strongly the failure process and makes the rock mass behaviour complex under different tunnelling and mining activities. Brittleness Index is a term to quantify the brittleness feature of a specimen. In the present study, an attempt has been made to quantify the brittleness of jointed specimens using different brittleness criteria. The joints of the model jointed specimens were oriented at an angle of θ=15° normal to the loading direction, each having three different JRC’s=2–4, 12–14 and 14–16. The specimens were tested under triaxial conditions in incremental complete cyclic test scheme performed at displacement-controlled mode. Different brittleness criteria were used ie stress-strain dependent brittleness index, Young Modulus approach and energy-balance based mechanism. It was observed that energy-balance based mechanism which consider the post failure behaviour is more descriptive to reflect the whole variation of brittleness from sheer brittleness to ductility.

Williams wrote that he considered his major contributions at BHAS were:the development of large scale sintering machines;the double tuyere-row blast furnace; continuous lead refining.Despite his well deserved reputation as a scientist, based on his advancement of the metallurgical chemistry underlying lead refining processes, Williams reveals that he considered commercial implementation as the ultimate measure of technological success. The Readymix Group have a Quarry Improvement Program - 'Building in Quality (BIQ) which has many parallels to the ICI Explosives' total quality management - 'Quality Improvement Program' (QIP). Both companies have for some time recognised that the 'do it right first time' principle means less wasted effort and materials, that efficiency breeds profitability and so actively promote the quality culture. To install the principles and generate the culture requires considerable commitment and effort from the top down and invariably spreads to the suppliers and sub-contractors. Understanding the component processes involved with the quarry operation, analysis of those processes and gaining a breakdown of the cost of non conformance then allows the astute quarry operator to make the necessary changes to improve the process to realise profits. This paper outlines the steps in such a process and the profitable outcomes of the commitment to continuous improvement at the Nickol Bay Quarry.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Traditional models employed to genetically link associated chromite and platinum-group elements have favoured crustal contamination as the primary process for inducing sulfide and oxide saturation. The association of chromite ores with crustal contamination is well established in the literature. However, in the 1970s (cf Irvine, 1973, 1975), Irvine demonstrated that crustal contamination was in fact problematic as a tool for inducing chromite precipitation in mafic to ultramafic magmas. His results are re-examined here, along with some attempts to reconcile them with the effects of adding Fe to the models. It is concluded that crustal contamination is indeed problematic based on phase relationships alone. However, the role of fluids as a compensating agent is evaluated, which may explain why crustal contamination may indeed facilitate oxide and sulfide precipitation.CITATION:Prevec, S A, 2015. During the last 20 years, manufacturers of Australian iron have given increasing attention to development of external markets for processed blast furnace slag. Slag has been in widespread use overseas and data on the performance of Australian slag in concrete lave shown it is suitable for that use. Chemical and physical properties of typical Australian slag products including air cooled, granulated and pelletised slag are discussed and compared with local natural aggregates. Special attention is given to pumping achieve- ments with slag concretes and the observed durability of concrete after many years service. More'recent applications for granulated slag as a sand replacement are discussed. It is concluded that'whilst more wide- spread use of slag is possible, the cost of marketing and transporting slag are likely to restrict opportunities unless for local usage.

THE Taranaki oil-field is situated on the western side of the North Island of New Zealand, at about its widest part, and may be said to be the most compact and fertile part of the Dominion, for, with the exception of the. upper half of Mount Egmont and of the ranges adjoining, which absorb 36,000 acres, the whole of the area, miuus what is taken up by the rivers land streams-is suitable for settlement, and certainly two-thirds is good land. The gross area oE the district is 2,417,299 acres.The principle rivers are the Wanganui, Mokau, Waitara, Patea, and Waiwakaiho. Mount Egmont, which is 8260 ft. high, used to be called Taranaki, and from it the district takes its name (the Maori meaning of which is "sloping peak ").
