Entry of personnel under a vertical raise bored hole is not standard practice in Australia. Where access is required below a rise, mining operations must be confident that they understand the capacity of the ground control specified and installed. Physical modelling was conducted on Callie mine to evaluate the performance of 5 mm steel wire weldmesh secured to the base of a vertical raise bored hole of 1.4 m diameter. Joint orientation data was used with Unwedge to calculate a series of potential wedges likely to form within the rise. The mass of the most likely wedges were then replicated by collecting rocks in 5 kg increments (¦10 per cent), which were allowed to freefall onto installed mesh at the base of a 40 m vertical rise. The results indicate that two sheets of mesh can retain a freefalling rock of at least 20 kg mass although rupture of strands can result. This paper outlines the test conditions, expected results based on theoretical calculations and actual outcomes of the testing.

A typical high silica low grade magnesite from the Salem area of Southern India, was used in studies to develop a suitable flotation system involving commercially inexpensive sodium oleate as the collector together with other reagents which can give a product of the required grade with an acceptable recovery. It was found that the presence of metallic ions such as Cu+, Fe+++ or Ca++ introduced by the addition of their salts, or by their formation with the addition of hydrochloric acid to react with magnesium and calcium carbonate in the me, can act as effective depressants for silica. The addition of 'hydrochloric acid' was found to give best results.

The southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain, a geomorphological element formed since late Tertiary times, contains commercially exploitable accumulations of ilmenite, zircon, rutile and monazite associated with a series of raised shorelines. The location of the deposits is controlled by a locally outcropping Archaen granite/ granulite complex and a sea current pattern determined by local geography and a prevailing wind direction. A progression from medium to high titanium ilmenite is evident parallelled by progressive leucoxenisation as the age of the deposits increases. Variations in trace element content accompany this process. Circulating groundwater has caused vertical mineralogical variations within individual deposits and by precipitation of iron has formed layers of hardpan.The Geographe Bay deposits are of important economic significance.INTRODUCTIONObservations made during the course of a brief survey of the southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain provide an outline of the geology and mineralogy of the mineral sand deposits of the area. This preliminary study will require considerable modification in the light of more detailed work in the future.REGIONAL GEOLOGYThe Geographe Bay area is situated in the south-west corner of Western Australia between longitudes 115° O'W. and 116° O'W. and latitudes 33° 15'S. and 33° 45'S.The general geology of the area is shown in Fig. 1 where the control of the physiography exercised by the Cape Leeuwin-Cape Naturaliste basement ridge is readily apparent. Between this ridge and the Precambrian east of the Darling fault lies the southern part of the Perth basin which contains outcropping Jurassic to Recent sediments and lavas (McWhae, et al., 1958).The Leeuwin-Naturaliste ridge is the exposed portion of L Assistant Production Managcr. A commonplace, sometimes overlooked or taken for granted, article of everyday existence is the tin can. Produced from thin gauge low carbon steel, and commonly coated with a mere 60 millionths of an inch of pure tin, the product is however strong and corrosion resistant. Tin-plate serves a myriad of purposes-the most important being to meet the requirements of the canning industry. Australia's newest steel product, tin-plate, was first produced on a commercial scale during the early part of August, 1957. The commissioning of the Hot Dip Tinning Plant (Fig. 1) of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. at Port Kembla, marked the culmination of a proposal dating back to 1939, the advent of World War II having caused its deferment to the present time.Cornish tin is known to have been exported as early as 300 B.C. to Syria and tinned vessels existed even in the year A.D. 23. The tin coating of plate could be described as an ancient art, believed to have had its origin in Bohemia in the thirteenth century. During the next 450 years, the process spread through Saxony to Pontypool in Monmouthshire, but it was a further half century before any measure of success was obtained.Perhaps the two greatest milestones in tin-plate manufacture were the rolling of iron plates first carried out in 1728, thereby outmoding the hammer formed sheet, and more recently, the development of the electro-deposition process. As in other countries, gold mining inNew Zealand has been cyclic in character. Looking at these cycles may provide insights as to what may occur in the future and that is the basis for this study.   New Zealand has experienced four gold mining cycles. The first began in 1857, peaked in 1866 and terminated in 1890. This cycle was characterised by alluvial gold mining by individuals and small groups. This is referred to as the Labour Led cycle. The second cycle began in 1890 and reached its peak in 1906 and terminated in 1929. This cycle was characterised by the use of dredges in alluvial gold mining and was also the peak of hard rock mining. This cycle is referred to as the Technology Led Cycle. The third cycle peaked in 1940. This cycle was far less significant than the previous cycles, arising out of the depression when the unemployed embarked on small scale alluvial mining. This overprinted the continuing decline that occurred after 1906. This cycle is here referred to as the Depression Overprint Cycle.   The fourth cycle began in 1984 when production began to climb rapidly from a very low base. The growth in production was spurred by rising gold prices in the early 1980s resulting in relatively low grade gold-bearing alluvial ground becoming economic. But in the 1990s, production from the new hardrock mines in Coromandel and Otago has overshadowed alluvial production. This cycle is here referred to as the Price Led cycle.   What are the future prospects for gold in New Zealand? Although there are many factors involved, this will be largely determined by two factors; firstly, continued access to prospective gold-bearing properties, and secondly, the price of gold. Based on these factors, three future industry scenarios have been developed. The first of these is industry collapse, in which access to prospective property is constrained and prices mayor may not weaken. The second is industry consolidation, in which the available ground is accumulated by a small number of large companies who can use economies of scale to weather price fluctuations. The third scenario is industry growth, in which access to prospective ground is constrained in environmentally sensitive areas but is otherwise relatively unconstrained. Efficient companies are allowed to work in a policy and economic framework that allows them to make a major contribution to the economy.   While the industry cannot control these critical factors, a good knowledge of the positive role gold mining could play in the future economy may provide a framework by which the access issue, in particular, may be addressed from a balanced perspective.

A cyanidation study was conducted on a mild refractory gold ore sample from the Central zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. Gold, at a grade of 8.00 g/t, is present as native gold, electrum and aurostibite. The ore also contains 2.8 per cent pyrrhotite, together with several antimony minerals (0.8 per cent berthierite and gudmundite, 0.18 per cent native antimony and stibnite). It also exhibits weak preg-robbing properties with 0.16 per cent organic carbon. Aurostibite, a gold antimony compound, is particularly known to be insoluble in cyanide solution. The antimony dissolves in cyanide solution to form antimonates, which retards gold dissolution. Industrial practice of extracting gold from aurostibite generally consists of producing a flotation concentrate, which is leached in a pipe reactor at low alkalinity and high oxygen pressure with about 20 g/L cyanide. The proposed new approach is efficient and allows the extraction of gold directly from an ore at atmospheric pressure and a low cyanide concentration at pH 10.5. The effects of grinding, pretreatment, lead nitrate, kerosene and cyanide concentrations have been investigated. The maximum gold extraction obtained on the ore was 87.9 per cent using 800 ppm NaCN, 500 g/t lead nitrate, 30 g/t kerosene, DO 10 ppm and pH 10.5 in 168 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.3 kg/t. The additions of lead nitrate and kerosene increased gold extraction. In comparison to a P80 of 74 ¦m, a P80 of 30 ¦m significantly increased gold extraction. Gold in solid solution in gudmundite and arsenopyrite was believed to be responsible for the unleached fraction until mineralogical analysis of hydroseparation concentrates of leach residues showed that most of the unleached gold occurs as aurostibite, either as locked grains in sulfides/sulfarsenides or as grains with passivation rims of an Au-Sb-O phase. Coarse gold was also found. Gold extraction was not sensitive to cyanide concentration from 250 ppm to 1200 ppm NaCN and high pH was detrimental. Decreasing the cyanide concentration reduced the cyanide consumption to 0.85 kg/t. The removal of coarse gold using a Knelson concentrator and a Mosley table prior to leaching increased the gold extraction to 90.4 per cent (leach residue at 0.77 g/t).

 The Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers deposits are mound-style volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits in Australia. Textural, petrographic and microthennometric investigations of fluid inclusions in the Hellyer stringer system indicate that Type I, primary, liquid-vapour inclusions are 10 - 15 J.UIl in size, and yield homogenisation temperatures of 170 - 220¦C in early 2A veins, 165 - 322¦C in main-stage 2B veins and 190 - 256¦C in late-stage 2C veins. These data suggest a waxing and waning thermal history. However, the average salinity remained between 8 - 11 NaCl equiv. wt % in all Stage 2 veins. At Mt Chalmers, Type I inclusions up to 20 urn are found in quartz from the mineralised zone, and these inclusions yielded homogenisation temperatures of 160 - 268¦C and salinities of 5 - 8 NaCl equiv. wt %. Laser Raman spectroscopic (LRS) analysis indicates the presence of CO2 (<1 mole %) in the Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers VHMS systems. Semi-quantitative SEM/WDS microprobe analyses of fluid inclusion decrepitates indicate that the Hellyer and Mt Chalmers ore fluids were enriched in potassium and calcium but depleted in magnesium relative to seawater. PIXE microanalysis of fluid inclusions in quartz also indicates a significant base metal concentration in these fluids. Cation composition and higher salinities relative to seawater suggest that recycled seawater alone cannot be the sole source of the ore fluids. High base metal content and the presence of CO2 in the fluid inclusions imply that magmatic input of ore metals during seawater leaching of the footwall volcanic pile is a distinct possibility.

Except for uranium search, conventional oil well logging techniques are relatively little-used in mining exploration. The main reasons for this are cost and an apparent lack of awareness of the potential use of the methods in the search for ore. However, relatively inexpensive portable units are currently available for performing the simpler electrical and radiometric logs in diamond drill holes.The emphasis in oil exploration logging programmes is largely on the estimation of porosity. In most mineral work, however, porosity is not very significant, and factors such as mineral conductivity and radioactivity assume an important role.The Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) during a programme to explore for uranium and associated base metals in the area east of Rum Jungle, N.T., carried out electrical and radiometric logging of diamond drill holes as a routine part of their investigations. Case histories are described in which the logs were used to aid in defining stratigraphic sequences and transgressive structures in base-metal prospects. Some surface geophysicalanomalies were explained by the logging: induced polarization and electromagnetic anomalies were related to black slate; and self-potential anomalies were related to oxidation of pyrite black slate, or apparent electrokineticeffects in the black slate. The logs provided an objective appraisal of the rock units penetrated and thereby helped to differentiate lithologies.Borehole logging, including newer techniques such as downhole analysis, could be done in geological and geophysical investigations in other areas for a relatively small cost with a considerable potential gain of information.

LAKE MARGARET is situate high up on the West Coast Range of Tasmania, and lies in a roughly triangular valley formed by the ridge of Mount Sedgwick on the south, the ridge formed by Mounts Geikie and Tyndal on the west, amid a ridge connecting Mounts Geikie and Sedgwick on the east. Any description of this hydroelectric installation, however brief, naturally divides itself into the following sections:1. STORAGE BASIN, &c. 2. DAM. 3. PIPE LINES. 4. POWER STATION. 5. TRANSMISSION LINES. 6. SUBSTATION 7. VARIOUS WORKS utilizing the power.The Storage Basin used is the natural lake itself, which has a maximum length of 110 chains, a maximum width of 40 chains, and a mean arelj. of 300 acres. The water-level of the lake, which has been maintained by a natural dam, is 2143 ft. above sea-level. The approximate catchment area at present appropriated is 7 sq. miles, and the rainfall, on the average, about 144 in. per annum. It is possible to increase this catchment area by suitable races, &c. Dam.-The dam constructed is of very small dimensions, and is not a storage dam in the usual sense of the term. The natural storage ot-the lake itself was used by means of a channel cut through the natural dam and thence to the mouth of the lake, the lake level being thus temporarily lowered while the outlet pipes, screens, &c., were placed in position, and the channel was then closed again with a concrete wall in which the pipes and screens are set. Murrin Murrin Operations have not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues, many of which are the result of design decisions, have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are: the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency; the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids; the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system. In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system was improved through mechanical modification as follows:CCD1 rake mechanism was modified to allow central vertical lift of 600 mm; and CCD1 changed to forced dilution using the Outokumpu TurbodilRântechnology by replacing the E-DucânRtechnology of Eimco. The installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system changes are discussed in this paper.

Over the past three decades, mining operations have seen a significant increase in the use of contractors for mining, camp management and catering, recruitment, maintenance, power management, and commissioning. More recently contractors have been engaged for stores and logistics, OH&S, environmental, exploration, training etc. In some countries, such as South Africa, the trend is towards total outsourcing of all aspects of a mining operation which is coordinated by the owners’ management team.During the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) more Australian companies considered and/or took on this approach to recruiting for both projects and operations as mining companies were forced to rethink their corporate strategies as commodity prices plummeted to low levels, pushing operations and projects into potentially financially unviable territory.This paper discusses the labour recruitment, commissioning and operating strategy of Western Areas NL (WSA), with the assistance of Independent Metallurgical Operations Pty Ltd (IMO), as it progressed construction, commissioning and operation of the Cosmic Boy nickel concentrator at the Forrestania Nickel Project during and post GFC. The use of IMO contractors allowed Western Areas to mitigate labour cost risk during the uncertainty caused by the GFC and let their management team focus on the task of bringing a new operation into viable and profitable production.

Northern Iron Ltd (NIL) is an Australian listed company that recently brought the historic Sydvaranger open pit Magnetite Mine (the Project) in Northern Norway successfully back into production. NIL made the decision to operate the Project on an owner mining basis, due to limited large scale mining expertise amongst Norwegian mining contractors, a long mine life, a limited range in planned mining rate and to minimise costs. As a new mine operator in a country where labour practices are strictly regulated, there was the desire to reduce the risk associated employing and managing skilled personnel. This was achieved by coupling the purchase of the required mining equipment from the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) regional dealers with OEM supported Maintenance and Repair Contracts (MARC). This paper examines the process that was followed to implement an owner mining operation in a short time frame; approximately 12 months from the initial requests for quotation to actual delivery of mining equipment to site, and some of the challenges faced. By following a formal and well-tested process, not only was the implementation achieved in the set time frame, but significant value was added through the cost savings achieved in the equipment purchase price and MARC rates that were negotiated through this process.

Traditionally, capital costs of major resource development projects have been estimated as a single amount to which a percentage accuracy has been assigned based on the method of preparation of the estimate, that is, on the amount of information available to develop the estimate.However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of a probabilistic approach to capital cost estimates, and of a more rigorous calculation of estimate accuracies and of the presentation thereof. Accuracies can be expressed with more certainty as a percentage of the estimate amount where the percentage represents one standard distribution on the probability curve for the capital cost of that specific project. Thus confidence levels can be stated for various estimated amounts - for example, it can be stated that there is an 85% chance that a stated amount will not be exceeded, or a 90% certainty that a (higher) amount will not be exceeded. Moreover, the right skewness of the probability distribution curve for most projects can be readily recognised and reflected in the evaluations. This enables senior executives and board members to have a clearer understanding of investment uncertainties, and the possible magnitude of commitments.

Paradoxically, the increased emphasis on water treatment in mining has generated a new problem û hypersaline brines. Currently brines are either disposed of into ash systems, lined evaporation ponds or hazardous waste sites. Evaporative crystallisation (EC) is an alternative, but the energy requirements can be prohibitive and the salt product is still a waste that must be disposed of. Eutectic freeze crystallisation (EFC) is an alternative technology that is capable of separating aqueous solutions into pure water (as ice) and pure, solidified solutes. It is highly energy efficient and does not depend on the introduction of any solvents. In addition, the simultaneous production of pure ice and potentially saleable pure salt(s) is a major advantage. Although EFC has been shown to be effective in separating a single salt and water, it is still in the early stages of being applied to the multi-component hypersaline brines that are typical of reverse osmosis retentates generated by mining and extractive metallurgy.This paper presents an EFC brine treatment protocol developed by the Crystallisation and Precipitation Unit at the University of Cape Town. The protocol incorporates brine analysis, thermodynamic modelling to establish which salts will freeze out and at which temperatures, followed by experimental studies to determine the kinetic parameters, such as nucleation temperatures, salt yields and crystal purity.Case studies showing the application of EFC for the purification of typical brines containing high levels of sodium, chlorine, sulfate and ammonia (Brine 1) and a mixture of sodium and magnesium sulfate (Brine 2) are covered. Modelling tools were applied to describe the phase behaviour of the multi-component saline systems under different process conditions. Experimental validation was carried out using synthetic brines of different (and increasingly complex) compositions. The results showed that EFC could be used to selectively recover the sodium as a sodium sulfate salt from both different brines. The simulation tools were useful in the analysis and understanding of the process.A preliminary economic analysis showed that the operating costs for EC were approximately nine times those for EFC, but the capital costs were much less- equipment for EC cost about half that of EFC. However, it is important to note that the capital cost calculations for EC are based on a technology that is already well established and with only relatively marginal future equipment cost savings expected. In contrast, EFC is a new technology, with significant future technology improvements expected.

Your Excellency, on behalf of the Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and, indeed, on behalf of everyone present, I extend to you a welcome, and our thanks for your gracious acceptance of the invitation to be here to-day and, later on, to present Honorary Membership Certificates. I also welcome the several official representatives of our Allies, of Great Britain and our sister Dominions.To Messrs. E. C. Driffield and E. J. Rigby, two of the original Foundation Members, who are with us to-day, I extend greetings.The present occasion is opportune to express, on behalf of a representative body of professional men, deep appreciation of the sacrifice which His Majesty the King has made, and will continue to make, by appointing His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester as Governor General of Australia and, therefore, His Majesty's senior personal representative in this country.I suppose, that as the primary reason for our assembly to-day is to celebrate the Fiftieth Year of the Institute's existence, I should properly on this occasion, give an account of its history and development. However, as this subject was ably covered by Mr. L. V. Waterhouse, in his Presidential Address in 1938, I trust I may be excused for selecting some other subject. I shall, therefore, exercise my privilege as President and give you a short history of the Mining and Metallurgical Industry of this country with special reference to its effect on the development of the Commonwealth and on the national economy. I apologize in advance for any statistics which I inflict upon you; some of these will be three or four years out of date, because of censorship restrictions. I shall as far as possible refer firstly to the industry prior to and including 1893, the Institute's foundation year, and then to subsequent development.Australia, is pre-eminently a pastoral and agricultural country and it leads the world in the production of wool. Nevertheless, it has an international reputation as a producer of gold and various metals and of minetal products.The development of gold mining in the decade 1840-50 was an epoch-making event in Australia's history, because, to quote one writer's apt phrase, "it precipitated Australia into nationhood." It was certainly responsible for a rapid increase in population. Thus, during the period 1841-1861 the population of Australia increased fourfold, from 221,000 to 1,170,000.The effect of the discovery of gold in Western Australia was even more striking. In November, 1932, an investigation of silicosis was undertaken at the, McIntyre Porcupine Mine, Schumacher, Ont., atfer a discussion of the problem with Sir Frederick Banting and his, staff. As a result it was decided to carry on dusting experiments with animals at the mine in a manner that would duplicate as far as possible actual industrial conditions.At that time 50, guinea pigs were placed in the crusher nouse tunnel of the mill where a considerable quantity of fine dust, containing approximately 35 per cent., of free silica, was being constantly produced. These animals lived in this atmosphere for periods up to one year, and, while on autopsy large amounts of dust were found in the lungs, not a single case of silicosis had developed. These negative results suggested, among other things, that the mine gases might be a predisposing factor in the production of silicosis, and the results of this investigation led us to undertake the study of the hydrogen-ion concentration of the condensate of the atmosphere, both in the mine and in various sections of the mill.The C02 combining power of blood serum on a series of 400 miners was also studied at this time. While these results were inconclusive, the variation in the hydrogen-ion concentration of the condensate between the surface and underground atmospheres encouraged us to investigate the effect of neutral, weak acid and alkaline solutions on the solubility of silicious materials. Gye and Purdy were the first to point out that the chemical reaction and not the physical presence of silicious material was responsible for the production of the fibrosis in silicosis. This work was investigated by Gardner and Cummings who showed that the tissue reaction to quartz was definitely proportional to the size of the particle. They found that 1-3 micron particles of quartz produced an acute proliferative fibrotic response while the 10-12 micron particles produced only a foreign body reaction up to a period of three years. It is accepted that the dangerous silica particles retained by the lung are under 5 microns in diameter. We assumed that if the solubility of the silicious material retained in the lung could be reduced sufficiently by the addition of some non-toxic element or compound the usual fibrotic respohse would be modified. We found that the addition of certain compounds to silica would reduce its solubility in the beaker to a slight extent. But these compounds, when mixed with quartz...

Automatic control of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills has often been considered complex. Recent experiences at Century Zinc (worldÆs second largest open pit zinc mine) refute this. Together with operating knowledge and appropriate control techniques high quality control is achievable. In this application model-based, constraint, and multiple output control were employed. The control was implemented using standard blocks in the plant DCS. The resulting overall control strategy fulfils the operating objectives and controls the mill with minimal operator involvement over 95 per cent of the time. Previous campaigns using expert systems and complex DCS based control have lacked durability. Their fall into disuse is briefly discussed.

They are 1.6 km and 3.5 km in length respectively and are being constructed through a variety of ground conditions. Deeper sections of the tunnels have been driven through the Silurian mudstone which underlies Melbourne. Other shallower sections of the tunnels pass through a variety of ground conditions including silts, sands, clay and rock and have been constructed using both top-down and bottom-up cut and cover construction techniques. The Yarra River Crossing is a 140 m length of the Domain Tunnel which crosses under the Yarra River on a relatively shallow alignment. The crossing of the river using cut and cover techniques was identified in the early stages of design development as being one of the most challenging stages of the works on the Southern Link. The prevalence of varying geological conditions combined with the need for maintained traffic and stream flow conditions provided a demanding and often conflicting set of criteria for which there appeared to be no one clear solution. A team of designers, constructors, estimators and specialist contractors were involved in a concept evaluation and risk analysis study spanning a period of approximately 12 months. During this study, four concepts were considered as likely contenders. This paper provides a brief outline of the four concepts addressing their relative merits, disadvantages and risks followed by a detailed description of the adopted solution, namely top-down construction using secant pile walling (east bank) and bottom-up in situ construction (west bank).
