Several logging methods are presently available to the oil industry for the evaluation of formation porosity: the Sonic and Neutron logs are already widely used, the Gamma-Ganmia log is being progressively introduced. The readings of these instruments are primarily a function of the rack-porosity, hence the general term of "porosity tools". Apart from porosity, however, other variables such as type of fluid in the pores, nature of matrix and degree of shaliness have an important influence.The response of each device is a different function of such parameters: therefore, a cci bination of porosity tools can lead to information on these variables in addition to the evaluation of effective porosity.For example, the presence of gas; rather than water or oil, in a formation which is not deeply invaded, will tend to give Neutron derived porosity values which are too 'low; on the other hand, the Sonic derived porosity: value will be too high in such- a case. For the same porosity, the Sonic gives a longer transit time in sandstone than limestone, whereas in the low porosity range, the Neutron will read more counts per second in a sandstone than in a limestone of the same porosity. The presence of shale also affects the readings of the various porosity tools in different ways so that the combination of two or more methods may lead, in some cases; to an evaluation of both the-effective porosity and the shale, content.In conclusion, it may be said that the various porosity tools pre-sently available, are, to a large extent, complementary, and that in many problems the use of two porosity tools, instead of one, is very likely to bring valuable additional information.

An Investigation on the Effect of Chrysotile Particle Shape and Anisotropic Properites on the Rheology of Chrysotile Suspensions Chrysotile, a polymorph of serpentine, is a phyllosilicate mineral that occurs as a major gangue mineral in many ores (eg Mt Keith nickel sulfide ore, Western Australia). The rheological behaviour of chrysotile stems from two main factors: its distinctive morphology and its electrical surface charge. It is believed that these factors are central to the problematic rheological behaviour and low solids throughput typically experienced in the processing of such ores. In this work, a study of the effects of chrysotile surface charge properties and particle shape on the rheology of chrysotile suspensions was conducted. It was found that the rheology of suspensions of pure chrysotile is characterised by extremely high yield stress values over a broad pH range (pH 4 to 11).The disparity in the point of zero charge and range of maximum yield stress for chrysotile is consistent with the anisotropic nature of chrysotile particles. A comparison of the rheological behaviour of quartz suspensions (non-fibrous) to that of chrysotile suspensions (fibrous) provides a practical indication of the effects of the fibrous nature of chrysotile relative to non-fibrous minerals. The long, thin fibres are easily entangled to form suspensions with much higher plastic viscosities and Bingham yield stresses than non-fibrous particles. Chrysotile particle shape and surface charge are central to the rheology of chrysotile suspensions, although shape appears to play a more significant role in this regard. This fundamental study would be beneficial to the ongoing research for improved recovery in the Mt Keith nickel sulfide ore as well as other chrysotile bearing ores.

During devolatilisation, physical behaviour of coals was investigated in horizontal electrically heated furnace with an inert gas atmosphere, and gasification rates of four coal chars and coke were measured thermogravimetrically in a carbon dioxide atmosphere at temperatures in the range 1100oC - 1500oC. The volume change of chars was also measured in horizontal electrically heated furnace at various temperatures. Both reactivity and the activation energy for the gasification of coal chars were found to be strongly influenced by pore structure and the carbonisation conditions employed during preparation. CO2 reactivity of chars increases with increasing reaction temperature, and particularly increases more rapidly over 1300¦C. CO2 reactivity of coke is lower than that of non-coking coal chars in the range of 1100¦C to 1500¦C. CO2 reactivity of chars with smaller pore area and bigger pore diameter is less than that of chars with bigger pore area and smaller pore diameter. During gasification, the volume of chars did not change significantly at the lower temperatures of 1100¦C and 1200¦C, but at the high temperatures, 1300¦C to 1500¦C, the volume of chars quickly decreased due to ash softening and melting. The CO2 reactivities of the chars are controlled by the mixed control of chemical reaction and pore diffusion in the temperature range 1100¦C to 1300¦C, and by bulk diffusion in the temperature range 1400¦C to 1500¦C.

The swelling process is an impor- tant problem causing damages to the structures in or on swelling rocks, both during construction and operating life. To understand swelling problem, a number of testing methods have been developed by many researchers. In these studies, the swelling parameters, in most cases, are derived from oedometer tests. The swelling parameters determined from oedometer type tests represent one-dimensional behaviour (one-dimensional swelling law) therefore, it is quite difficult to extrapolate the oedometer type test results to the three-dimensional in-situ conditions. To overcome these problems, a three-dimensional approach is suggested for clay bearing rocks. Results of triaxial swelling tests conducted on marl from Dodurga Lignite Coal Mine are presented. Triaxial swelling characteristics of the marl are presented and design approach for tunnels is described.

The economic climate of the Canadian mining industry forced an increased interest in rapid, continuous excavation techniques for hard rock formations. The potential applications and advantages of continuous mining over the present drill- blast-muck labour intensive cyclical methods are considerable. Noranda investigated an electrical technique, Plasma Blasting showing considerable promise for mining hard rock. The background of the technology and the theory of blasting rock with electricity is described. The Plasma Blasting process is based on the fast discharge of stored electrical energy into a small amount of electrolyte, suitably located in the rock. The electrical energy converts the electrolyte into high pressure plasma, which expands very quickly, thereby, generating a shock wave. This shock wave produces a stress field inside the rock, resulting in a blast similar to that made by chemical explosives, but without the deleterious fumes. Noranda is currently blasting boulders of 4-5 tonnes and is at present constructing a mobile, autonomous secondary rock breaker for underground and open pit applications. Tests on in situ hard rock formations will lead to the development of a continuous mining machine. Production rates of 500 tonnes per man-shift could be obtained with such a machine.

Using a Jarrell-Ash "Compact" direct reading spectrometer, analyses were made of a wide variety of rocks ranging from acidic to ultrabasic types. Statistical evaluation suggests that accuracies comparable with the values obtained by the rapid chemical methods used by the United States Geological Survey will be obtained.The spectrographic method involves fusion of the rock with lithium tetraborate, strontium being incorporated in the flux as the internal standard. The resulting bead is ground with graphite and pressed into a pellet. The counts obtained on two standard pellets are used to correct for instrumental drift.Background readings are made at 4109 Å and corrections for background are made to all lines. Corrections for matrix interferences, both by chemical suppression and optical enhancement, are made. The three corrections of drift, background, and matrix are incorporated into one general expression which has been programmed on magnetic cards, each element requiring a separate card. The cards are placed individually into a desk top computer (an Olivetti Programma 101), which enables true counts to be calculated from the "readout" counts, and the element concentration is then obtained from computer-printed tables by referring to the appropriate value of true counts versus concentration. These tables were prepared by making a polynomial regression analysis of the spectrographic results from 50 standard and analysed samples, a curve of best fit being chosen for each element.The regression coefficients, usually of a fourth or fifth degree equation, together with other relevant data, were fed into a large computer, programmed to print out tables of concentration versus true counts. This technique enables the results obtained to be based on mathematically-derived values rather than on hand-drawn calibration graphs, giving greater inherent accuracy. The technique has been shown to give results of good accuracy and acceptable precision suitable for many geological and geochemical exploration programmes involving the analysis of many rock samples of different types.

In the early stages of the planning of a new exploitation, the error in ore reserve estimation is an important factor that must not be disregarded. As this error can be computed by geostatistical methods, the risk of the venture can be calculated for different recognition patterns in a certain assumption of economical conditions. A case story is described for an open pit phosphate deposit in which grade/tonnage curves and their confidence intervals are related to an economic function for three drilling patterns and decisions are taken on the basis of cost and value of supplementary information.

The future of the Tasmanian mineral industry can only be estimated from a knowledge of the past, and armed with this knowledge an orderly plan for the future can be developed. Brief mention is made of the major historical developments through to the present day, with past and future development areas clearly mapped. Areas of importance which have been discussed are divided into the mining of metals, fossil fuels and non-metals; and the process- ing and extractive industries. Discussion then follows on the current general non-insular pressures on the mining industry, the energy crisis, scrap, world shortages, new techniques, inflation, and the effects of exploration on the environment. This is then followed by a discussion of the advantages of Tasmania as a mining state and a cataloguing of the present exploration and some possible areas of future development. From this a suggested plan emerges for the future development of the Tasmanian mineral industry, to incorporate the latest technological advances and by planning to meet the challenge of survival and growth in a turbulent environment.

Despite the limited literature regarding the pressure filtration of mine tailings (compared to the large number of papers published each year on paste thickening of tailings) the number of mines dry stacking filtered tailings is approximately equal to the number of mines storing tailings in paste form. Main drivers for filtering tailings are: water recovery, future rehabilitation costs for tailings storage area and permitting requirements. In arid climates, the cost and scarcity of water justify the capital and operating costs associated with pressure filters. Further justification for filtered tailings is the potential for progressive reclamation of the dry stack, which can proceed earlier and faster than the reclamation of a tailings dam.Filtered tailings must be transported to the storage area by trucks or conveyors. For dry stacking, 70 - 80 per cent solids content (by mass) is typically acceptable, however the primary goal is to provide a filter cake that is consolidated and dry enough to prevent bridging and build-up on the materials handling equipment. It has been observed that high average solids contents (~70 per cent) can be achieved while the centre of the filter cakes is still wet and sticky, presenting challenges for the transportation of the solids. Appropriate controls must be in place to ensure consistently easy to handle solids are discharged from the filter.FLSmidth has installed two fine coal tailings dewatering systems in the United States. One of these systems incorporates a Deep Cone Thickener« upstream of the filter press to minimise the amount of water that must be filtered, while the other tailings filter press is fed by a high rate thickener. The operation and performance of these filters is discussed and compared to the lab testing used to size the full-scale equipment.CITATION:Pepper, D, 2012. Groundwater geochemistry is controlled by chemical interactions with aquifer rocks, and offers a powerful geochemical exploration technique for locating concealed mineral- isation. Techniques are applied for identifying constituents of aquifers using the compositions of their groundwaters, collected from the surface through drill holes, water bores or springs. Even slowly moving groundwaters have passed through large volumes of rocks which surround any sample site. Products from these rock-water contacts modify the groundwater. By relating water composition to the minerals from which the dissolved species may have been derived, geochemical exploration information is obtained for a significantly larger zone than is represented by drill hole rock samples. In this paper we describe some solution chemical tech- niques we are applying in mineral exploration, particularly in areas of Australia where ground- waters are highly saline and contain enhanced concentrations of trace metals. EQUILIBRIUM MODELS FOR SALINE GROUNDWATERS Central to our technique is the assumption that in low rainfall regions, aquifer rocks and contained groundwaters are in chemical equili- brium. Solubility calculations then allow us to predict upper limits to the soluble products of groundwater interaction with aquifer rocks and to identify minerals with which the groundwater is saturated. Whilst equilibrium calculations require input of concentrations of all dissolved species, they are actually based on "activity" of dissolved species rather than the analysed concentrations. Unless waters have very low ionic strengths (a measure of total dissolved solids), activity of a solute is not equal to its analytical concentration but equals concentration multiplied by an "activity coefficent". Several methods exist for calculating mineral solubilities. The ion-association model, commonly used in programs such as WATEQ (Truesdell and Jones, 1974) and later deriv- atives such as MINTEQ, assume the formation of complex ions such as MgSO4(0), CaCl+, which are described by formation constants. The Peak Gold Mines Pty Ltd (PGM) operations are located approximately 9 km south of Cobar, NSW. PGM currently mines and treats ore from three separate orebodies within 5 km of the original plant. Production from the original Peak orebody ceased in April 2002, with ore currently sourced from underground at New Occidental and Perseverance, while New Cobar supplies ore from an open cut mine. In March 2003, Wheaton Minerals Asia Pacific purchased the operation from Rio Tinto who operated the mine for around ten years. The Perseverance deposit is situated between 600 and 1000 m south of the Peak orebody. Access is via shaft from Peak to 630 m below surface and then by decline to the northern end of the deposit locally known as Zone A. Development of the resource commenced mid 2002 to set up for a long hole open stoping operation at 25 m level spacing. The first production stope was successfully brought on line December 2003. The Perseverance deposit is hosted by sediments and volcanics along the eastern margin of the Devonian Cobar basin and is one of many deposits with the Cobar Gold Field. The Cobar Gold Field has produced approximately 2.5 million ounces of gold since 1880. The Perseverance area had long been considered prospective due to the presence of old workings at the southern extensions of Peak line of lode. Significant mineralisation was first discovered at Perseverance in 1994 when PGM drilled a hole targeted 950 m below the historic workings. The target was based on an apparent plunge to the stratigraphic controls to the Peak Orebody. Subsequent exploration within and around the ægreaterÆ Perseverance area has been significantly aided through the use of downhole electro-magnetic surveys due to the close spatial association between gold and sulfide mineralisation.

Petroleum exploration in the Australian arid zone has been proceeding at an ever-increasing pace, subject to financial fluctuations, since the 1960's. The impacts of petroleum exploration in the arid zone are less than they would be for corresponding operations in. e.g. a forest area: in this context, Australia is fortunate in that its major petroleum producing (and prospective) , basins are offshore or in the arid zone. In addition. the other major sources of impact in the Austrlian arid zone, namely pastoralism, tourism, and rabbits, tend to be concentrated around areas of particular conservation significance, whereas petroleum exploration is not. Despite this, the cumulative impacts of exploration are sufficient to have caused concern to government regulatory authorities and some sectors of the general public. Exploration is now subject to a range of environmental constraints with various degrees of legal enforceability. To enable exploration to continue without public opposition, the industry, and government agencies charged with regulating or supervising it, must demonstrate that the net benefits of exploration exceed net costs, including environmental costs. One particularly simple and cost-effective technique for increasing the net benefit/cost ratio of exploration is to reduce the net environmental costs by minimising and mitigating the impacts, both primary and secondary, of seismic acqisition. This is best achieved by a combination of preventive and restorative techniques: careful line positioning and low-impact (or zero) line clearance, coupled with simple rehabilitation of bladed lines. Line clearance without bulldozer blading - e.g. by rolling or simply pegging and trafficking, perhaps with tracked rather than rubber-tyred vibroseis - is one promising approach currently coming into use. Rehabilitation by grading soil banks ("windrows") back on to bladed tracks, though not yet in widespread use, has proved very successful in the limited areas where it has been applied to date.

Magnetite deposits with distinctive ¦ actinolite ¦ apatite -bearing gangue and spatially-extensive sodic-calcic wall rock alteration occur in both Proterozoic metamorphic terrains and Mesozoic-Tertiary magmatic arcs. Examples from both settings constitute significant sources of iron ore (e.g. Kiruna, Sweden; El Romeral, Chile) and some host major Cu-Au deposits that have a local association with K-silicate alteration (e.g. Cloncurry district, NW Queensland; Copiapo district, Chile). A growing body of evidence points to a hydrothermal origin for these systems involving high temperature, low S oxidized fluids. The Cloncurry magnetite-Cu-Au deposits are products of the local structurally channelized influx of a specialized high salinity ore fluid into larger-scale alteration systems developed during pluton emplacement at greater depths than those associated with subvolcanic (porphyry) Cu-Au deposits. The geological characteristics of deposits in magmatic arcs are consistent with a similar mode of origin albeit in rather different tectonic settings.

A good blasting result is largely achieved by putting the right amount of explosive in the right place and firing it in the right sequence. The best blast design in the world will not break the rock if the planned blast layout is not achieved in the field. One of the critical inputs into a blast design is the diameter of the blasthole. An assumption that the actual blasthole diameter is equal to the nominal drill bit size is generally made. However, a small deviation in the actual hole diameter from that assumed will have a dramatic effect on the hole's volume and, consequently, where the explosive is placed in the blasthole. Any discrepancy in actual blasthole volume from that assumed will be reflected in 'overloading' or 'underloading' of the blasthole with the calculated explosive quantity and, thus, reflect in explosive distribution and stemming lengths. When loading to a 'collar' in an oversized hole extra explosive will be used, resulting in higher than planned powder factors and explosive costs. A blasthole diameter assumed from a nominal drill bit size is an incorrect assumption. This paper will present some actual blasthole diameter measurements illustrating the variation in hole diameters seen in the field and proposes a practical method for achieving a useful blasthole diameter measurement.

Edie Creek is located in the Morobe Goldfield about 17km by road from Wau in the Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Four distinct periods of mining development have occurred since discovery of rich alluvials in 1926. During the two years following discovery, individual expat-riate miners with gangs of native labourers mining rich alluvial gravels dominated the field. After the discov-ery of hardrock mineralisation in 1927, companies accumulated leases and devel-oped extensive underground mines and mechanical processing plants at Day Dawn Mine and Edie Creek/Karuka Mine between 1929 and 1942. After the Second World War, the underground operations were not re-opened, and mining activ-ities mostly concentrated on working alluvial and eluvial deposits. From 1962 onwards, Papua New Guinean miners became increasing producers as company activities declined. In 1990, Edie Creek Mining Company Pty Limited, a joint venture company involving Wau landowner groups commenced operations on New Guinea Goldfield's leases. It currently mines by open pit methods, rich quartz stringers and is invest-igating the open pitting of the Edie Creek/Karuka underground workings.This paper describes the mining and processing techniques employed during the various phases of develop-ment at Edie Creek in the past 70 years. The problems and hardships of operating on a new and remote goldfield are outlined.Abstract

Coal mine pillar design formulae available to mine planners are typically based on relationships determined for specific site conditions. Application of these methods is difficult when other factors, relating to mining or geological conditions, not specifically addressed in these relationships are encountered. A review of pillar design methods, coal strength properties and relevant field monitoring of pillar behaviour has shown pillar strength and deformational characteristics are extremely sensitive to in situ behaviour of the rock and other material components that make up the coal pillar system. A method has been developed that has been found to provide excellent correlation between existing field data using the strength and deformational characteristics of materials determined in selected laboratory tests. This method is based on definition of the loading conditions, accurate modelling of the strength, confining conditions and deformation occuring in the roof, floor and coal seam and definition of the in situ strength of coal based on underground monitoring of appropriately sized coal pillar. The design method is considered to provide an accurate and rigorous pillar design method that will give mine planners a more rational mine design capability which is based on the mine geometry and geological setting of the operation. It is envisaged that availability of such a method will allow significant optimisation of pillar layouts and more closely define the geological and mining issues that relate to pillar design optimisation.

Intermontane valleys form unusual features of compressive mountain belts both in the sharp topographic break they represent and in the strike-slip displacements often associated with the valleys. Such strike-slip motion seems hard to reconcile in the actively deforming Andes where reconstructions have indicated nearly perpendicular Cenozoic plate convergence. Detailed study of a part of the Argentine Andes between latitude 31-33¦S suggests that, although strike-slip displacements may have largely created a prominent intermontane valley system, no Holocene strike-slip displacements are observed amid the relatively active compressional deformation along the mountain belt flanks. New plate reconstructions, treating the Nazca plate as two microplates separated by fractures along the Nazca Ridge, predict large components of strike-slip motion between the South American and Nazca Plates for the period from 10 to 5 Ma. These reconstructed plate motions are consistent with strains derived from recent kinematic analyses of minor faults along the southeast margin of the Puna plateau and the general timing of tectonic phases in the Andes.

During the 20th century, the iron ore mining industries of Canada and the United States passed through several periods of transformation. The beginning of the 21st century has seen yet another period of transformation, with the economic failure of a number of steel companies, the acquisition of their facilities by more viable steelmakers, and the consolidation of control within the North American iron ore industry. Changes in Canadian and United States iron ore production and the market control structure involved are analysed. The consolidation of ownership, formation of foreign joint ventures within North America, planned divestitures of upstream activities by steelmakers, and industry changes made to ensure availability of feedstocks will be reviewed. The traditional isolation of the Canadian and United States iron ore operations and their strong linkage to downstream steel production will be discussed in the context of a changing global economy. Management-labour conflicts that have taken place and agreements made during 2000 through 2004 will be discussed in the context of the economic environment leading up to these agreements. Cooperative agreements between competing Canadian and United States companies to resolve client needs in processing and blending will be examined. A joint industry-government project designed to use new technology to produce direct reduced iron nuggets of 96 - 98 per cent iron content using non-coking coals will also be assessed. Changes in iron ore transportation methods, ownership and infrastructure will be reviewed for both rail and inland waterway transport between Canadian and United States companies. A brief analysis of social and environmental issues relating to sustainable development of the Canadian-United States iron ore industry will be included.
