The South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, is situated at Broken Hill, NSW, Australia, towards the southern end of the main lode. The leases (MLs 7 and 8) cover a length of 2400 feet along the lode outcrop and the workings extend, at this date, to a depth of 1940 feet below the collar of the original main shaft and to 825 feet below sea level. Mining operations have been continuous for about 58 years and during this period nearly 12.5 million tons of ore have been mined. The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30 000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet. A typical assay for a monthly period is 14.4 per cent Ph, 5.6 ozs Ag, and 11.6 per cent Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.

Rational design of layouts for longwall operations is greatly facilitated by use of an accurate and economical method for predicting stresses and displacements. The displacement discontinuity method (a form of boundary element method) is based on replacing actual excavation geometries by thin slits of the same plan area. This approach allows three-dimensional stress- analysis at a fraction of the cost of alternative methods. The analyses can be readily performed on economical microcomputers, putting the analysis capability within the reach of mine-site personnel. This paper describes investigations associated with the German Creek Central Colliery, the first longwall operation in Queensland's Bowen Basin. The material properties used in the model, in particular the rock mass and goaf properties, have been 'tuned' to fit stress measurements obtained during extraction of the first and second longwall panels at the mine. The study shows that model predictions based on suitably scaled anisotropic rock strata properties are in good agreement with the stress measurements made to date. This model predicts average chain pillar loads significantly higher than predicted by models based on United Kingdom conditions. A working chain pillar design method is proposed using average pillar loads predicted by the numerical model and ultimate strength characteristics given by Bieniawski's formula.

Although mining is an old industry its management is quite a new science, and its complications are now being recognised as demanding expert knowledge in many branches of technical and professional education. Not the least amongst these isaccountancy, for probably its most important problem is "How to control the expenditure." Unlike most businesses a mining company stands almost entirely in the light of a purchaser in the world's markets, and not as a seller, except say for product so the established and perfected systems of modern industries cannot be adopted for mining purposes. For this reason it has been left for late years to consider the matter seriously, and now a number of well-managed concerns have devised costs systems to suit their own requirements.Very little, however, has been published and even that is disjoined and difficult to make use of. Some of the costs systems in vogue, although elaborate and imposing, are not of very great value for keeping check on wasteful expenditure, or for displaying the commercial effect brought about 'by any particular change in practice, or by an addition or alteration to a portion of existing plant.

Time window analysis that limits the explosive mass fired within a specified time window (commonly eight milliseconds) has been used for many years in blast design by explosives engineers. Despite several warnings in the past that this technique has limited practical or scientific basis and, in many cases, does not effectively control vibration, almost every textbook and blasting manual refers to time window charge mass limits as a primary vibration control technique. It has become entrenched in some blast vibration management plans, despite being inappropriate for the particular situation. With the flexible initiation timing available with electronic detonation almost a practical reality, and the 8 ms constraints in-built into the signal tube initiation system thereby lifted, it is timely to review the significance of the 8 ms time window in controlling blast vibration. This paper re-visits the original research that led to the development of the 8 ms criteria and the non-supportive conclusion of the original researcher. Because airblast was not measured, the 8 ms time window was never intended to be applicable for airblast control. Examples of blast designs are given in this paper that comply with the 8 ms time window limit that result in substantially increased air and ground vibration, together with examples of blast design that does not satisfy time window considerations, which results in reduced air and ground vibration. Techniques that identify wavefront reinforcement, due to the combined effect of drilling pattern and delay sequence, can assist explosives engineers to avoid high blast vibration situations that result from the inappropriate application of time window techniques and other adverse delay combinations.

The planned extraction of deeper copper ore at Isa Mine has necessitated a review of existing equipment and methods to contain costs and improve working conditions. Mining is in progress for a crushing-conveying system to serve the deeper southern areas of the 1100 Orebody. This system will permit direct tipping of ore to the crushers and conveying of the crushed ore by cable belt conveyor to existing shaft loading facilities, a distance of about 2 km. To develop part of the conveyor drive a new machine will be used, the Robbins MM120 Mobile Miner, a joint development project between The Robbins Company and Mount Isa Mines Limited. The Mobile Miner uses a rotating cutting wheel to excavate headings 3.7 m high and from 4.7 m to 7.5 m wide. To ventilate the deep crusher complexes and associated development at high virgin rock temperatures, a refrigeration plant will be built on surface to reticulate chilled water underground. Bulk cooling of air to the 3000/3500 Orebodies and the southern crushers will be combined with the reticulation of chilled service water to the lower workings of the mine.

Mine ventilation models are now an accepted component of most mine management systems. However, modern ventilation models also represent a highly structured spatial data source, defining underground pathways and connections across a mine. This creates opportunities to extend the use of network models beyond ventilation design, by using critical path algorithms to find pathways such as minimum distance or minimum time.This paper explores the use of ventilation network models to automatically analyse and calculate potential emergency escape routes. A variation of Dijkstra’s algorithm is used to predict complex pathways between any two points across a model, representing an escape route from an emergency area (such as a fire) to a safe location (such as the surface or a refuge station). Weighting can be assigned to paths to represent potential travel speed, obstructions or preferred routes. Finally, emergency considerations such as smoke or gas in some parts of the mine can then be incorporated into the pathways to force the algorithm to avoid dangerous routes and specify safer pathways. Syferfontein Colliery, part of the Sasol group of companies which specialises in the field of petro-chemical production, was established in 1990. The mine is situated about 150 km east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Two coal seams are mined, utilising two 75 m3 draglines, shovels and a fleet of 177 ton rear dump trucks. The mine will reach its full production capacity of seven million tonnes per annum in 1992. During the planning period, prior to the establishment of the mine, management were confronted with the unstable socio-political environment in South Africa which could jeopardise the eventual success of the mine. They consequently conducted a strategic planning exercise to determine guidelines for mine planning to improve the chances of success in this unstable third world environment.The strategic guidelines formed the basis for specific actions taken during the planning and commissioning of the mine. Specific actions were taken in the field of operating cost, labour relations, working environment, logistics and the general environment. First results indicate that these actions have played a major role in the success of the mine to-date. This process can be utilised by others facing similar or even totally different uncertainties.

The first step in the design of a process to treat a possible economic precious metal deposit should be an examination of the mineralogy of the ore. Using this and other initial tests, the extractive metallurgist can design a process to treat the ore. In the field of precious metal metallurgy, little emphasis is placed on the mineralogical information available to the metallurgist. The information is of far more use to the geologist and the mining engineer. Diagnostic leaching was designed to open up the field of mineralogical analysis to the metallurgist. When a mineralogist looks at the deportment of gold in an ore, he is usually looking for an element which is present in parts per million, so that errors in sampling are multiplied dramatically. Diagnostic leaching offers a cheap, simple, practical alternative. In order to determine with which minerals the desired precious metal is associated, a specific mineral is first eliminated using a selective oxidative leach, and cyanidation is used to extract the precious metal (in this case gold and silver) liberated by the destruction of this mineral. The precious metal extracted can be measured in solution to give a fairly accurate record of the amount of the precious metal associated with that mineral. Furthermore, the residue from this first stage can be subjected to another selective acid leach, and the process repeated. The procedure can be varied to suit the mineralogy of the matrix material. At the end of this diagnostic leach the metallurgist is left with a complete record of the deportment of the precious metal. He can now use this information to design a metallurgical flowsheet to treat the ore. Diagnostic leaching is thus an analytical tool which can be used by the metallurgist not only to examine new ores, but also to look at problems occurring at existing plants. The procedure is not only limited to ores and residues but in fact can deal with any type of intermediary product that occurs on a plant. The information gained from analysing an intermediary product can give a useful indication of how well a unit process is working, eg flotation, roasting, etc.

The R&D landscape for ore pre-concentration technologies within mining is characterised by the development of individual technologies and point solutions. This presents METS and mining companies with the combined challenge of understanding how to apply pre-concentration technologies to create maximum value, and how to sustainably integrate the technologies into their businesses to maintain the value. The paper will consider the requirements of an integrated pre-concentration system and presents a portfolio of R&D projects that have co-developed and integrated a suite of new precencentration technologies and methodologies across the mining value chain. Focus areas include in-situ orebody characterisation, blast design, real time cross belt mineral sensing, and consideration of how much data needs to be acquired in order to make value based decisions between ore pre-concentration options. An ore pre-concentration workflow is presented to demonstrate how additional optimisation opportunities are enabled both by moving decision points further upstream in the value chain, and by integrating the concepts of pre-concentration into the design of mineral processing equipment. Additionally, several research projects examine the non-technical factors that present barriers to uptake of new technologies within mining companies. Organisational culture, risk management and socio-political factors are discussed and a set of management tools are presented that allow organisations to self-assess their readiness for new technology uptake, along with process models to assist management with identifying and navigating the ecosystem of stakeholders that are decision makers in the use of pre-concentration technologies.

Due to the increasing demand for resources worldwide, efficient utilisation of raw material deposits and recycling technologies become more and more important. Growing industrial nations and increased living standards require a large raw material supply. Hereby responsible handling of existent primary and secondary raw materials is indispensable. By utilising state-of-the-art technologies resources are extracted, recovered and recycled more efficiently which increases sustainability. Hereby sensor technologies combined with intelligent data processing systems in particular provide a considerable research area. Innovative sensor technologies are already implemented during recognition of material-specific characteristics, during elemental recognition as well as during machine control. They are applied to attain increased automation levels of mining machineries, higher recoveries during mining and processing as well as higher recoveries. To be able to face the increased demand for sensor technologies and the integration into raw material industries, an interdisciplinary association of three RWTH Aachen University Institutes has been founded. The association has expertise on increasing productivity and capacity utilisations by automating mining and recovering processes by sensor technologies. Due to the utilisation of sensor systems, materials and structures can now be detected and elementary analysed on a real-time scale. The developed and enhanced techniques are the key for any ambition of autonomous plants and machineries. This paper gives an overview on the regarded sensor technologies for material recognition, machine automation and mineral processing. The authors present concepts based on extensive laboratory and field studies of successful implementation and application the technologies considering special mining conditions. Overall three applications are described to demonstrate the potential of sensor technologies for autonomous and sustainable mining: real-time analysis: recognition of elementary compounds during extraction processes; multi-sensor system EiControlPlus: designed for automation of longwall shearers by complete detection of the machineÆs environment; and sensor-based sorting: applied in recycling and mineralÆs industries.

"A new approach to mineral project evaluation is described called Scenario-Based Project Evaluation (SBPE). SBPE incorporates well established æscenario planningÆ and æscenario thinkingÆ approaches, which are used extensively in other industries,?most notably the?petroleum industry. While most scenario planning is qualitative and non-probabilistic, the approach described here includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. SBPE is complementary to optimisation approaches and allows mining firms to build and operate projects that are more robust in the face of adverse changes as well as proactively respond and exploit the upside offered by a realistic assessment of variability. The approach has potential to improve project performance and decrease operational risk. It also has important applications for currently operating mines.Conventional evaluation of metalliferous mineral deposits uses estimates of metal grades and deleterious attributes in singular æorebody modelsÆ, usually 3D block models, which fail to capture two critical aspects that underpin the realised value of mining projects: the inherent uncertainty of the estimated attributes the spatial variability of attributes, at the scale of mining selection, which impact on downstream processing steps and fundamentally drive realised value. While singular models are appropriate for estimating block averages, conditional simulation (CS) models of the relevant attributes are needed to represent uncertainty and capture spatial variability. Any attributes that can be either built into CS models and/or modelled in the envisaged mining/processing steps, can be evaluated fully through to highly ægranularÆ (ie detailed and un-smoothed) cash flows. A complete view of SBPE relies on selected strategies being tested against plausible æscenariosÆ of factors external to the project and thus outside management control. æExternalitiesÆ captured in such scenarios include market prices, costs and taxes. Via SBPE, project managers may demonstrate that there is material value in preserving or purchasing options that provide future flexibility to respond to the changing externalities or changes in orebody performance. Such flexibility generally comes at a cost but is very difficult to value. It is argued that full value chain evaluation using SBPE can help to value these options for a mining company. At the Kristineberg mine in northern Sweden sulfide-rich, poorly buffered tailings have been deposited in five impoundments located along a valley. The tailings area has been remediated by applying a combination of till cover and flooding. A new method that has been applied to parts of the tailings area is to raise the groundwater table to saturate the tailings. By increasing pH by liming, thereby reducing metal mobility, a water-covered downstream impoundment is functioning as a trap for metals released from the till-covered impoundments upstream. In this paper the efficiency of the system approach used at Kristineberg is evaluated. Progressive changes of water quality from groundwater in the upstream till-covered impoundments via surface streams within the pond system to the water in the flooded downstream pond and its outlet are described. The results show that the system approach used in the design of the remediation programme of the tailings works as planned. The sulfide oxidation rate has decreased in the till-covered impoundments, and, as predicted, there is an out-flush of old weathering products which will continue for at least five years before equilibrium is reached. The groundwater in the till-covered impoundments has high concentrations of Fe, S, Mg and Zn, but the concentrations of metals such as Cu, Cd and Pb are much lower than before the till cover was applied. The limed pond is an efficient metal trap, with concentrations as high as 2.76 per cent Zn and 0.28 per cent Cu in the calcite-gypsum sludge developed on the tailings. The outlet from the flooded pond, and thus from the whole mining area, releases small amounts of metals to the recipient in comparison to the amounts that are in movement within the mining area. During the period May to November, 13 kg dissolved Zn and 111 kg particulate Zn was released to the recipient, whereas a total of 27 000 kg was transported by surface water within the impoundment system during the same period. The results from Kristineberg show that when planning remediation of complex mining areas, it is useful to adopt a system approach in which different methods are used on different parts of the area along the flow path of the drainage water, whereas flooding of the downstream pond is the key to the performance of the entire system.

"The mining industry is constantly seeking methods for optimising the exploitation of mineral resources, such as iron ore, in a sustainable and eco-efficient manner for economic and social benefit. When faced with resources that have mineralogical or textural complexity, poorer grades or geological variability, it is particularly important to apply a comprehensive geometallurgical approach to the development of the mining operation, from resource definition through to processed product. Integral to this approach is the quantitative characterisation of representative samples across the whole orebody.A key factor that associates the geological characteristics of iron ores to their processing response is ore texture. While the classification of samples on the basis of chemical or physical properties alone is often not sufficient to predict their processing behaviour, classification and quantification of texture types can be effectively correlated to metallurgical performance in processes such as blending, beneficiation, pellet making, sintering and ironmaking. Predicting the physical characteristics of various ore types has for long been a difficult problem during mining. Grade control practices tend to concentrate on the chemical grade of the ore. Estimation of physical characteristics such as beneficiation behaviour is commonly limited to the simplistic application of historical averages. Large amounts of geochemical data are often gathered during the exploration and mining stages of a project, especially in ferrous and base metal deposits. In addition to the elements of principal economic interest, samples are often analysed for suites of gangue constituents to determine whether the mineralisation lies within target specifications. This multi-element data is often put to no other use than this simple chemical classification, yet it may present the geologist or metallurgist with valuable insights into the mineral content and physical characteristics of the deposit. Normative mineral estimates have been used as a method for characterising igneous rocks for almost 100 years. The method establishes and applies a set of sequential rules, by which the chemical components of a sample are assigned to mineral components. Provided that it is possible to make some realistic assumptions about the mineral species likely to be present in a rock unit or deposit and their paragenesis, this approach can be extended to a variety of mineral deposits. The geochemical data that are routinely collected when, for example, drilling iron ore and base metal deposits, can be used to derive estimates of normative mineral content. These estimates can be used to characterise physical or metallurgical aspects of the ore, such as density, beneficiation behaviour and metal recovery. This paper examines the application of normative mineral estimates to a variety of practical resource characterisation problems. The potential for predicting the lump and fines proportions of iron and manganese ores is also discussed.

Soft sensors offer several practical advantages for the process control of comminution circuits by combining multiple conventional sensors and other data sources with real-time analysis using mechanistic, phenomenological or machine learning models. While there has been a growth in the use of machine learning techniques for developing soft sensors in minerals processing applications, this paper describes advantages and challenges of using soft sensor models developed on the basis of process knowledge. Recent experience with three new soft sensor technologies developed by the authors are discussed. The Mill Filling Inference Tool which has been implemented at several mine sites, compares SAG mill load cell and power draw measurements with outputs of a semi-mechanistic power model to estimate the mill ball and total filling in real time. The progressive wear of the mill liners is modelled, allowing the model to correct the load mass due to the mass loss automatically and to estimate the charge trajectory. This information enables the mill to be operated more confidently near its limits. A coarse-ore stockpile soft sensor as been recently developed using a 3D cellular automata-based model to track ore size throughout the pile, and estimating the live capacity and size at each stockpile feeder to the primary mills. Finally, a hydrocyclone soft sensor is being developed to monitor performance using available hydrocyclone models to estimate the size and flow balance around the cyclone in real time. The model-based soft-sensor approach aims to synthesise and analyse existing data and provide operators and engineers with process- and model-relevant information that can facilitate making better process decisions. Maintenance data has proven useful for model development as it allows soft sensors to automatically adjust and compensate for the effect of progressive wear, for example for mill liners, thus helping the models to maintain calibration throughout the equipment life.

Modern mining and coal cleaning techniques lead to the generation of large quantities of fines which give rise to problems in their storage, handling, transportation and further processing. Pelletisation, a method of particle agglomeration, can alleviate such problems. This paper provides a brief overview of the principles of pelletisation and a survey of the coal pelletisation literature. Then it reports results from an experimental investigation of the effect of surface active reagents on coal pelletisation. Finally the paper is concluded with a few remarks on applying the results from the experimental study to practical coal agglomeration.

SUMMARY Tyres account for 25-30% of the operating costs of large capacity haul units as used in open-cut mines. Tyre operating costs can be substanti- ally reduced and often contained in real terms by applying knowledge that is now available. This paper describes certain specific advances in tyre management, namely batching, bias adjustment, cumulative plotting and the so-called "pressure-temperature" system of tyre pressure control, originated on the Mt. The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig incorpo- rates the principles of operation of a conventional mineral jig, at the same time utilising high centrifugal forces to extend concentration to very fine heavy minerals. The main operating variables which are adjusted to control processing of different types of material are centrifugal force, ragging material and size distribution. Pilot plant trials have been under- taken to examine concentration of a mineral sand in which the heavy mineral particles occur mainly in the minus 0.075 plus 0.032 mm size range. Stage recoveries of greater than 90% were achieved at concentration factors of up to 2, although lower recoveries were obtained with higher concentration factors. A final concentrate containing 65% heavy minerals was obtained.

The approach of using the Coward Triangle for the analysis of flammable mine gas mixtures has been examined for its application, to the flammability of coal dust/gas/air mixtures. Explosible lean limit and rich limit concentration data for dust/methane/air mixtures are examined and illustrated using co-ordinate geometry. It is concluded that a three-dimensional envelope representing hybrid explosible mixtures can be drawn. The dimensions of this explosive zone will vary with the characteristics of the coal dust and the gaseous composition of the mine atmosphere. Further research is needed to establish these dimensions for important mined seams.
