Maximum recovery of sulphide minerals by flotation is achieved over a limited size range. Valuable particles above and below this range have a smaller probability of being recovered. In the normal grinding-flotation operation, not all valuables are reduced to the optimum size range, and therefore sub- stantial losses occur. A significant improve- ment in the size distribution is not usually possible within the conventional circuit, and a more complex arrangement may be necessary to obtain optimum recovery of the valuable mineral. This problem is considered with refer- ence to the Mt. LyeZl concentrator. The performance of the existing circuit is dis- cussed, and it is shown that losses in recovery occur in both coarse and fine sizes. Laboratory tests indicate that regrinding the coarse particles results in an increase in recovery of up to 4%. Redistribution of plant grinding capacity to reduce initial grinding power by 6% and use this capacity to regrind coarse particles was considered. It is con- cluded that overall plant efficiency would be increased by 2% provided that overloading of the regrind mill could be avoided.

Changes to water industry practice are required as a consequence of the Council of Australian Governments water reform agenda which binds all states and territories to a range of measures intended to drive new efficiency, sustainability, higher value use and proper provision for environmental needs. Queensland is implementing its reforms program through its water resource planning process, a legislatively underpinned program that provides for a new level of social, economic and environmental security. A water resource plan for the Fitzroy Basin has been finalised and its implementation plan, which details infrastructure operational arrangements for the basin, is due to be released later this year. The mining industry is a major contributor to the economy of the Basin, and although a comparatively minor water consumer, is now aligning its water use practices with the stateÆs maturing integrated resource management paradigm. This new culture presents both challenges and opportunities. Water reform in the Fitzroy basin is well advanced. The processes and institutional arrangements that have been developed are of significant importance to the aspirations of current and future minerals development. This paper outlines the current status of those reforms and the likely institutional framework for the near future. The paper also discusses how the reforms impact on the availability, access and security of water available to mining interests.

In recent years there has been a great deal of interest in ways to optimise the performance of mineral processing plants. This paper describes a methodology developed for optimisation of autogenous and semiautogenous mills. The methodology involves plant sampling, batch testing, modelling, computer simulation, control strategy evaluation and implementation. The models have been tested in plant operations to verify the research findings and predictions. Two example applications of this approach to plant optimisation are presented. Benefits reported in these two examples are in the range of four - eight per cent increase in size reduction efficiency.

A brief descri;tioki is given of nuclear power reactors and their fuels. These fuels are made from a variety of uranium compounds such as uranium dioxide, and uranium carbide as well as uranium metal and its alloys. The various processes used to produce some of these compounds from yellow cake are outlined. Using the natural uranium, heavy water reactor by way of illustration, fabrication of fuel elements is dis- cussed and the characteristics of U02 powder required for this partic- ular fabrication are indicated. The flowsheets and equipment presently in use overseas for production of this type of U02 powder are described. Possible areas where improvements might be made to this conventional process are enumerated and some details are then given of the programme of work which has commenced at the A.A.E.C. Research Establishment to gain experience in the general field of nuclear grade UO20

Perhaps no aspect of the investigation of an ore-deposit is of greater importance to the mining geologist and engineer than a consideration of its geological structure. A thorough understanding of the type, size, shape, and arrangement of any ore-body is essential to the proper conduct of exploratory, developmental, and mining, operations. Significant as these remarks are' in relationship to ore-deposits in general, they become of paramount moment when a complex structure such as the Broken Hill Lode is in question. In this connection the use of the term "lode" as applied to the Broken Hill ore-bodies may terid to confusion of ideas among those not familiar with the field or with the literature pertaining thereto, by reason of the fact that it is generally understood that a "lode" is characterised by simple, tabular form, regular outline, defined walls, and persistent attitude. However, as the terminology is well established by common usage, itsretention appears desirable, and, for the purpose of this paper, the name "The Broken Hill Lode" refers to that complex unit which includes pre-eminently the famous ore-bodies exposed in the workings from the North Mine on the one extreme to the South Blocks (Zinc Corporation) Mine on the other.That the practical value of geological investigation, of the ore-bodies was realised by the Geological Sub-Committee of the late Scientific Society of Broken Hill is attested by the...

Recent successful testwork on phosphate minerals in the USA and a variety of coal types in Australia confirm the utility and efficiency of the design. "The Batu Hijau copper/gold mine, operated by PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara, is located in the south-western part of Sumbawa Island, Indonesia, and is situated ~10 km from the south coast at an altitude of ~450 m above sea level. The mine became fully operational by year 2000 and processes approximately 120 000 t of ore per day that contain an average of 0.53 per cent copper and 0.4 per tonne (g/t) gold. Tailings management at the mine includes a deep-sea tailings placement (DSTP) system that discharges tailings through a pipeline via an outfall located at a depth of 125 m at the head of the submarine Senunu Canyon (Figure 1).The environmental impact assessment undertaken prior to approval of the DSTP evaluated both on-land tailings storage facility (TSF) and DSTP options for tailings management. Negative attributes of the on-land TSF included removal of approximately 2300 ha of forest/agricultural land, the potential relocation of >2000 people from their communities, the high average annual rainfall (>2500 mm) and potential for earthquakes presenting challenges for water management and creating a long-term risk of failure. The final choice and Indonesian Government’s approval of DSTP was also influenced by the close proximity of the deep submarine canyon to the mine. The Batu Hijau mine is one of the larger examples of DSTP in the world and deposits tailings at the greatest depth. The depth of the main canyon increases to >2000 m within 20 km of the coast, and to >3000 m approximately 50 km from the coast.The DTSP at Batu Hijau must comply with an environment management plan (EMP) and environment monitoring plan of permit stipulation that approved its commencement in 2000; updated in 2010 and 2015. The environmental management objectives were to avoid impacts to highly productive components of the ecosystem such as coral reefs, mangroves, surface waters and fisheries, and confinement of impacts to areas of low biological productivity. In the vicinity of the DSTP outfall and within the Senunu Canyon, the management plan predicted significant adverse impacts from the DSTP on the marine ecosystem in the form of: reduction in sea water quality due to elevated turbidity and dissolved copper concentrations burial of benthic organisms a reduced habitat for demersal fish.Recovery of the pelagic and benthic ecosystem to preoperating conditions was predicted to occur within the first two years after operations cease. The CSIRO has performed due diligence studies to independently verify compliance with permits and evaluate new monitoring objectives (Apte et al, 2004; Simpson et al, 2010; Angel et al, 2015), and has performed assessments of environmental monitoring data on the tailings footprint and ore stockpile processing against the above environmental objectives (Simpson and Angel, 2015).CITATION:Angel, B M, Simpson, S L and Waworuntu, J, 2016. "Check sampling programs were undertaken at Barrick Australia Pacific LimitedÆs Lawlers and Plutonic mine sites in Western Australia. The programs identified that the sampling, sample preparation and assaying protocols required modification to ensure acceptable precision (reproducibility) for each gold mineralisation type. These case studies describe the processes used to identify the: inconsistent precision different types of test work programs that were conducted to quantify the appropriateness for each mineralisation type steps used to modify the protocols.The type of test work conducted included: a duplicate series heterogeneity test for particulate gold mineralisation in the Lawlers gold deposit screen fire assay test work on duplicate subsamples for arsenopyrite associated mineralisation at the Plutonic gold deposit.Each test work program required a detailed scope specifying the sample selection criteria, sample preparation and assaying steps. The aim of the test work flow chart design was to ensure the assay precision between the different particle sizes or duplicate sample pairs could be measured and calculated. In the screen fire test work the true grade of the primary sample was calculated and compared against each subsample.A high quality assay laboratory was utilised for the test work. All samples were fire assayed and the gold grade determined using a gravimetric finish. The assay results were validated and the data was analysed using tables and graphs in spreadsheets. Following data analysis a modified sample preparation and assaying protocol for each mineralisation type was designed for use by the principal assay laboratories. During the past 18 months several import- ant hydrocarbon discoveries have been made in the Dampier Sub-basin, which is a sedimentary area lying entirely offshore from the Precambrian Pilbara Block in the southern part of 'he Northwest Shelf of Western Australia. This sub-basin is a major sedimentary downwarp forming a northern extension to the Carnarvon Basin. This extension is bounded to the north by the De Grey Nose, separating it from the Beagle Sub-basin. To the south the Dampier Sub-basin merges with the Barrow Sub- basin. Extensive seismic data combined with results from exploration drilling show that the Dampier Sub-basin is a complex depositional basin containing over 20,000 feet of sediments which are mainly Triassic to Recent in age. Tectonically the sub-basin can be divided into seven main structural elements. In a northwest to southeast direction these are the Rankin Platform, the Kendrew Trough, the Madeleine- Dampier Trend, the Lewis Trough, the Legendre- Rosemary Trend, the Enderby Fault Zone and the broad Pilbara Shelf. Permian sediments were encountered in only one well drilled to date in the sub-basin, but Triassic and younger sediments are extensive. The Gj0vik Olympic Mountain Hall is the world's largest underground cavern for public use and was created primarily to facilitate the ice hockey tournaments for the 1994 winter Olympics in Norway. The cavern has a span of 61 m, is 91 m long and is 25 m high. Ordinarily, rock caverns have a span width of 15 to 25 m, however, temporary mining caverns of up to 60 m have been excavated and natural caves with even greater dimensions occur. The Gj0vik Olympic Mountain Hall is unique as it is for public use with a capacity for 5800 spectators. Blasting was conducted with a high production rate at normal costs due to detailed planning and strict supervision of each round. The initiation system and vibration monitors were the main tools to control vibration levels and to facilitate a high production rate. It was of utmost importance that the rock remaining in the roofs and walls was of high quality after blasting to avoid rock fall, rock slides and excessive maintenance work.

Some mqre facts and inferences are presented in amplification of a recent paper on the geology of the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile stressing the volcanic origin of its rich gold ores, some of which are considered tobe exhalites. Previously unpublished and largely unmapped pyroclastic features in carbonated and chloritized, but not in amphibolitic, country rock are brought to attention. This applies particularly to the main host, viz. the relatively coarse-grained quartz dolerite greenstone (Q. D. G.), i.e. Golden Mile Dolerite, and gives more credibility to the spatial association of the rich Green Leader and telluride ores with bodies of sediments and tuffites occurring within, or adjacent to, Q. D. G. There may be an intrusive relationship with contiguous mafic amphibolites of doleritic origin, but this is not certain and can only be resolved by morecomprehensive mapping than in the past. Volcanic features have always been recognized in CalC Schist, i.e. Paringa Basalt, more so recently in the shape of coarse volcanic breccia.Iu the subsequent deformation of the gold ores since their inital emplacement there appears to be a structural parallel with some Canadian base-metal deposits, most of them of volcanogenic origin.

In commercial mineral processing operations it has been found that the conditions in the drier have a considerable effect on the subsequent electrostatic separation of nttile and zircon. Laboratory scale studies simulating these heat treatment processes have shown that the electrical conductivity of nitile varies markedly with treatment temperature, time and gas composition. The zircon on the other hand is unaffected. By increasing the electrical conductivity of the rutile, significant increases in separation efficiency can be achieved. Electron microscope investigations have shown the increase in electrical conductivity to be associated with the production of planar defects in the crystal lattice.

The iron orebodies of the Pilbara region are formed by supergene enrichment of banded iron formation and rarely do such processes produce orebodies with uniform grade distrib- utions. The orebodies being mined or developed have to be worked to grade/quality constraints imposed by contractual agreement rather than natural characteristics. Hence it is imperative to use a non-biased ore reserve calculation method. The geostatistical study of a typical iron orebody is presented. Emphasised are the geological characteristics of the orebody manifested as a variable grade distribution of iron and impurities; the determination of variogram model; subsequent uses of the model for computation of ore reserves and kriged lock estimates; computation of dispersion variance and conditional simulation of orebody.

Optimum selection of explosives by means of monitoring explosive performance can lead to increased profitability through the control of fragmentation, a reduction in hangingwall and footwall damage and overall drill and blast costs. Studies conducted at the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company underground copper mine evaluated in situ the performance of four explosive types. Measurements included monitoring the levels of induced shock energy and the attenuation thereof with distance. The velocity of detonation (VOD) of these explosives was also measured using in-hole techniques. Assessment of these results, together with a knowledge of the rock mass strength, facilitated the selection of an explosive that was best suited to the given rock mass conditions.

The paper describes the studies conducted to date on the short term adsorption/desorption of gases in coal from the point of view of developing techniques to predict imminent outbursting conditions in coal mines. A number of different parameters such as'dP express, K' and AV 0/60 etc. which have been effectively used overseas were studied on samples of coal from Westcliff and Leichhardt Colliery. Results indicate that these do not seem to be valid indices for predicting an outbursting condition. Based upon desorption isotherms, a new index defined as "L" has been developed which shows promising results. This index is in a position to differentiate the changes in the structures of coal and its proness to outbursts. The "LZ value determinations and its usefulness opens a new field where it would be possible to determine outbursting conditions from existing drill cores obtained during exploration studies or from long holes drilled in advance from underground workings. The index is more or less independent of the time elapsed between the extraction of a sample and the conduct of the test. The test for "L" can be conducted'on site or in the laboratory. The test is simple, easy to carry out and the "L" value for a sample can be calculated in less than 20 minutes. It could be adapted as a routine test for monitoring outburst conditions in mines.

In November, 1967, a four strand curved mould continuous casting machine coupled with a 50 ton basic oxygen furnace began producing billets for the rod mill and new merchant mill at the Newcastle Steelworks. To date over 500,000 tons of carbon and alloy steels have been cast at the rate of 20,000 tons per month, the major part for the wire industry. Many alterations have been made to the plant to simplify the process, improve quality and increase production. Casting parameters have been developed for each different type of steel. The quality of the final product has been influenced most by casting temperature, secondary cooling and casting speed. All these factors have been controlled and good results are reproduced. More exacting requirements of liquid steel quality have brought about the use of higher lime/silica ratio slags during steelmaking to control phosphorus revers- ions and standard ladle additions of manganese suicide and ferro aluminium for more effective deoxidation.

Based upon the previous work of Norman and Loeb, a method, was used, to assess-the comparative wearing properties of ten different alloys being used, or being considered for use, as mill liners and grinding media at Mount Isa. The materials to be tested were obtained in the form of large diameter balls and were run, along with the regular ball charge, in a large ball mill operating-under normal grinding conditions. At selected. intervals, the test balls were removed from the mill, weighed and identified, and their relative wear rates determined.

Brown coal and its char were investigated as substitutes for petroleum coke in the manufacture of anodes for Hall-Heroult cells. The char, which had been densified by several techniques, was made into compacts with various binders and the anodic consumption determined during electrolysis. The results were an improvement on previous work, but the anodes still fell short of acceptability for use in aluminium smelters because of intractable microporosity. Some options for future development have been discounted.
