"Surveying, and as a result, surveyors, have been around since the start of time, and it has been said that so has their methodology!The theodolite and tape have been the backbone of a time-tested practice that has led to ground breaking advancements such as electronic distance measurement (EDM), global positioning system (GPS) and positional laser scanning. However, it was the introduction of the unmanned aerial system (UAS) that has allowed mine sites such as St Ives to take the next step towards truly turning survey data into metadata.This paper will explain how the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was adapted to meet the requirements of a mine site supporting a major open pit operation, and how the open pit mining team adjusted their planning and production processes to maximise use of the extra data and information available to them.The advantages of the system include point cloud surveys with corresponding large-scale up-to-date photography and computer generated high detail contouring of mined areas that are then incorporated into the mine plan. The world-class Golden Mile gold deposit in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia is part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) operation, which is wholly owned by Northern Star Resources Limited. Current mining operations across the Golden Mile is dominated by the large Fimiston Open Pit, which is over 4 km long, 1 km wide and 600 m deep. It is part of a larger mineralised system that stretches over 8 km and includes the Mt Charlotte Underground Mine, which is also operated by KCGM, as well as numerous historical open pit and underground mines. This mineralised system has been continuously mined for over 125 years and is set to continue well into the future. The Golden Mile deposit is in the Norseman Wiluna Greenstone Belt which is made up of a series of mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks that have been structurally deformed and intruded by granitic rocks. There are two main styles of mineralisation across the Golden Mile. Firstly, the Fimiston style, which consists of shear hosted Golden Mile lodes with abundant sulfides and tellurides and secondly, the Charlotte style that comprises younger stockwork veins. Fimiston style mineralisation is the primary style of mineralisation within the Fimiston Open Pit. Historically, in excess of 3500 m of underground development and over 755 stopes were mined prior to the consolidation of the area and the commencement of Fimiston Open Pit operation. Old underground workings, known as voids, are either empty or backfilled and extend to more than 1.2 km below surface. Although they are a routine part of mining operations at KCGM, voids pose a significant challenge for the geology team in terms of planning and executing exploration and grade control drilling, geological modelling, grade and tonnage estimation, drill and blast design and execution, marking up ore block designs, mining, and reconciliation. This paper will discuss the various challenges faced by the geology team due to the presence of voids, solutions used to overcome some of these challenges and the results of these activities.

Gravity gold recovery has been practiced for thousands of years, making it one of the oldest forms of mineral processing. Gold is 19 times heavier than water although the barren rock is generally only 2.7 times heavier. Any potential gold ore needs to be characterised to assess its amenability to a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) process based on well planned and executed test work. Scale up considerations need to be considered in designing a gravity circuit. The economic impact of a gravity circuit should be justified based on the installed cost and likely benefits. Maximising gravity gold recovery results in a faster cash flow, lower operating cost per ounce and higher overall gold recoveries compared to the several weeks required to recover gold adsorbed onto carbon. The advent of centrifugal concentrators such as the Knelson and Falcon, coupled with intensive leaching of concentrates (ILR), has revolutionised gravity gold circuit designs. Considerations associated with the sizing of the centrifugal machines and the percentage of the circulating load (bleed) that should be processed is discussed in this paper. The trends with gravity circuit layout, engineering, as well as optimum dumping cycles, are important areas which require close consideration. Key aspects of these are presented in this paper. There are a number of circuit configurations to be considered, including the integration of different gravity concentrators. Other gravity process design considerations such as fewer modules, the effect of equipment size and enhancement of process efficiency using preconcentration, together with factors that affect OPEX and CAPEX are addressed. Practical considerations of maintenance, security from theft, minimisation of risk and water balance considerations are discussed using different equipment and circuit configurations. The trend towards using gravity recovery in flotation plants is also reviewed. A number of examples are cited and good design aspects highlighted.

The current economic climate and demand for iron ore has resulted in mine operators being prepared to accept aggressive slope designs and associated failures provided that they can be quantified (ie volume of failure and clean up costs, etc) and incorporated into the mining costs, at a feasibility study level. This has numerous implications for pit slope design/geomechanics. Typically when geotechnical engineers conduct slope stability modelling a single value, usually the average or mean value for model input parameters (ie structural orientations, material properties and hydrological conditions) are chosen. The implications resulting from using a single value for model input parameters will vary depending on how the modeller has chosen the value, ie should the modeller choose a mean value from a log-normal distribution of material strengths an optimistic representation of the stability may eventuate, consequently if the designer decides to conservatively downgrade the values by a nominal factor, a pessimistic representation of slope angles may occur, which would result in excessive stripping and mine development costs. A more realistic and representative way to model the inherent variability of geological/geotechnical conditions would be to do so probabilistically. Whereby the modeller can assess the variability of the geological structure as observed/recorded during the core logging process and a similar approach for the material strength properties. The final model output would be a distribution of factors of safety in relation to overall slope angles, ie probabilities of failure for individual slope angles could be determined. This output (graph) could be modified by the mining engineer to incorporate mining costs as well as clean up costs for the respective slope angles and associated failure volumes, ie probabilities of failure. The author intends to provide a detailed overview of the processes involved in deriving a geotechnical design, ie; starting from the data collection phase (core logging/face mapping), through to the data interpretation and formulation of slope parameters; determining the variability and uncertainties associated with each of the process; ensuring that it is adequately captured in the model input parameters; and how the mining engineer could utilise this information to derive final feasibility study mining costs.

"From paving the way in gaining approval for the first metalliferous in-pit tailings storage facility (TSF) in Victoria, to developing a deposition methodology to optimise the storage capacity and provide a final rehabilitated surface which replicates the premining topography, in-pit tailings storage has proven not only to be a cost-effective means for tailings management at Fosterville Gold Mine, but also one which provides significant economic, social and environmental benefits. Coupled with ongoing raising of the existing above ground TSF and commissioning of a new above ground TSF, Fosterville Gold Mine have to date effectively used three open pits for in-pit tailings storage, with one of the pits currently progressing through the capping and vegetation establishment phases of closure.This paper presents the process adopted by Fosterville Gold Mine in their flotation tailings management, from design and operational phases through to rehabilitation implementation. Several studies have been conducted on the economic analysis of mining near-Earth asteroids for resources for use in Earth orbit. While these studies use detailed economic figures of merit, they often use many invalid assumptions in the trajectory design. Factors such as the energy and propellant requirements are estimated with analytic methods, however, the stay-time at the asteroid and the spacing of repeated launch opportunities are not taken into account. The work outlined in this paper attempts to combine detailed trajectory design methods with newly defined economic figures of merit to improve the economic assessment of asteroid mining missions. As more and more mining operations around the world either switch to, or trial, electronic initiation systems, the breadth of knowledge and experience regarding their effective application has widened considerably.In South America, for example, there is a strong perception that in order to achieve the finest possible fragmentation, very short electronic delays must be used between successive holes within a row. Limited field studies involving measurement of fragmentation have been conducted to support that paradigm and there are few long term studies which have been strongly supported by measurements of productivity either in the pit, in the plant, or in the leaching pads.On the other hand, some well documented studies have been conducted in North America, showing not only the impact of delay timing on fragmentation but also the effect on semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill productivity over extended periods of in excess of 12 months. To date, those studies suggest that optimum timing is considerably longer than the times commonly used in South America.This paper explores the current knowledge of the effects of delay timing on issues ranging from size distribution to vibration impacts in pit walls, to vibration and overpressure impacts in surrounding communities. It also explores how fragmentation modelling can be adapted to reflect fragmentation trends that have been reported in various technical conferences around the world.

The gravity-induced stirred mill such as the TowerMill is an energy-efficient grinding solution used in secondary, tertiary, and regrinding duties in the mineral processing concentrator. The interest in this technology is emerging, with more than 300 mills installed globally in various grinding duties and commodities for the last 30 years. Although the technology is matured, there are still opportunities for improvement and the development of new knowledge to improve its circuit energy efficiency and reduce water consumption. Recent studies show that a combination of stress intensity, ore hardness, slurry density, and mill feed configuration can be used to evaluate the performance of the grinding circuit. A recent pilot-scale TowerMill test work at various stress intensities shows that a lower operating work index and size-specific energy were achieved at higher agitator tip speed and using medium size grinding media. These outcomes were confirmed through several site trials. A smaller 17 mm grinding media has reduced the operating work index and size-specific energy by 18 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively, compared to the 20 mm in a magnetite concentrator. Moreover, the conversion from top feed to bottom feed configuration has reduced the operating work index and size-specific energy by 13 per cent and 37 per cent, respectively. The circulating load was reduced by 34–38 per cent, leading to a reduction in the dilution water consumption in the hydrocyclone feed sump by 20 per cent. A variable frequency drive offers flexibility to change the stress intensities on the TowerMill, where a 35 per cent reduction in specific energy was achieved when the ore became soft. This paper explores the potential design and operating strategies that can be implemented to enhance the energy efficiency, reduce water consumption and reduce CO2 emissions in the circuit and finally evaluate its impact on the total cost of ownership.

Environmental compliance and mine designs are increasingly including assessment of flows and water qualities as a key driver to decision-making over life-of-mine. Integrated site-wide water quality models linked to dynamic water balances have been used for regulatory submissions, feasibility studies, operating mines and mine closure studies. These models, developed in GoldSim, link aqueous chemistry to the physical system of the site-wide water balance. Geochemical mechanisms included are determined from geochemical characterisation and site water monitoring, depending on the data availability at each site. External geochemical modelling using PHREEQC, version 2 (by D?L?Parkhurst and C?A?J?Appelo) and Geochemists Workbench (GWB), (by C?M?Bethke and The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois) identifies the most important geochemical processes to be included in the model as a series of geochemical mechanisms which include source term loading rates, pH-buffering and equilibration of water quality. Water balance components include seasonal flow variability; waste facility water storage and system lags; run-off variability; milling processes and tailings production as a function of ore types; simulation of automated and scheduled maintenance of settling ponds; water re-routing for water treatment and freshwater demand, usage and storage.Case studies illustrating the use of these models for regulatory submissions and mine feasibility studies in a variety of climatic and regulatory environments show the utility and applicability of these models. Site-specific examples of these models developed by Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd are currently used at operating mines across the world. One of the larger mines where this is used is a mature poly-metallic mine in South America where the model has aided mine managers in understanding how various planned initiatives and potential water options will result in changes to flows and water quality. It is used regularly to inform water and waste management to minimise impacts to the receiving environment as a consideration of both flows and concentrations. The mine has also used the model in support of water treatment design, regulatory submissions and mine closure planning.Further examples of feasibility and operational/compliance assessment in arid and strongly seasonal environments for planning, regulatory and closure consideration of mine wastes and pits have shown the utility and usefulness of these approaches for a range of mining operations at various stages of mine life.CITATION:Strand, R and Usher, B, ?2014. Nickel laterite HPAL circuits are known for their complexity and have presented a large number of challenges to process engineers worldwide. An attitude commonly encountered by the author is that the beneficiation of the ore is relatively simple and that the difficult problems are in the realms of hydrometallurgy. On a number of occasions beneficiation has become the 'poor cousin' in the process design phase. Another common theme is that significant difficulties are encountered when beneficiation circuits are started up, invariably slowing the ramp-up of the remainder of the circuit. In some cases the problems impact on throughput for a long period and can require major rectification capital. The HPAL Ni laterite projects encountered each have their own set of beneficiation problems that need to be understood before an appropriate circuit can be designed. This paper will discuss a range of design issues including geometallurgy, ore characterisation through laboratory testing, the application of appropriate sizing and analytical procedures, the selection of appropriate unit operations, materials handling of plant feed and products and setting meaningful plant design requirements.

This paper reflects on the author’s experience working in site-based technical and management roles over a 29 year period, and the past 12 years in internal and external consulting roles. It discusses the author’s experiences and observations of operations management, and the significant value of the technical specialist’s role in providing management with information on what to base tactical decisions, which may or may not be part of a defined strategy.The landscape of mine management changes with the cyclical nature of commodity prices driving operating and capital prudence, as operations change their focus from expansion and growth to staying in the game. The role of the mine manager and management team in navigating through these changing times, attitudes and stages of the project life can influence the success or otherwise of many projects.Technical knowledge is one of the key drivers in realising or destroying the value of a project or operation. As managers focus on people management, management systems and processes, recognising and understanding value in underlying technical knowledge, and getting back to the fundamentals/basics, can be overlooked. In reaction to the fluctuating commodity cycle, managers implement changes through optimisation, fast tracking or parallel streaming, expansion projects and changes in the application of technology. These responses occur against the background of changes in the appetite for risk, acceptance of project uncertainty and changes in personnel which result in a loss of knowledge and experience – often at critical times.This paper shares the author’s experiences and lessons learnt in dealing with and observing these issues. As cities become more populated and the need for tunnelling increases, we continue to dig deeper urban tunnels in more challenging ground conditions. At the same time our expectations for durability and long-term performance are increasing.It has become increasingly apparent in recent years that repairing water leaks in tunnels can be very costly and unplanned infiltration can cause undesirable outcomes for long-term maintenance costs, structural durability and environmental impacts. For this reason, tunnel constructors are investing more time and effort upfront into drainage and waterproofing systems.Tunnel membrane systems are becoming accepted as a necessary part of tunnel construction, however the knowledge surrounding selection of appropriate systems, design detailing and installation methods has not increased at the same rate. Currently Australia relies heavily on International Standards from Europe and the United States with no immediate program in place to establish our own locally relevant industry standards.This paper gives an overview of where the industry in Australasia is heading in terms of adopting relevant standards. Current basic waterproof detailing options for drained and undrained tunnels with success and failure of various methods are also addressed. Finally we look at the Brisbane Airport Link as a case study for how tunnel waterproofing contract methods, design and installation issues are being addressed in context with recent projects including the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link in Sydney, Auckland Northern Gateway Tunnel, Eastlink Tunnel in Melbourne and Sydney City West Cable Tunnel.This paper’s primary objective is to propose guidelines for how tunnel waterproofing could be implemented on large infrastructure projects in the future and to map a path for preparing and introducing a ready to use document for selecting appropriate tunnel membrane and drainage systems whilst implementing detailing methods which are appropriate for local conditions.

The employment of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is the default delivery method for the realisation of traffic, utility and primary resource underground space worldwide, with hundreds of kilometres completed safely each year. This is not yet the case for the mining sector in Australia, specifically underground coal mining. The safety advantages of TBM delivery when compared to New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) delivery, or that of drill and blast, remains unrealised.With coal access drifts ranging between 1000?m and 3000?m in length, the construction of these facilities using TBMs could be done in a fraction of the time when compared to current practice. TBM world records currently stand at 435?m/week or 1600?m/month for the 7.0?m to 10.0?m range. Resource owners and developers should embrace the opportunity to deliver access to their orebodies in only a few months, excluding machine assembly and disassembly time.There are challenges in utilising TBMs for construction of Coal access drifts, such as; TBMs generally being bespoke design, maximising capital efficiency for drift development, and geotechnical variances between projects. This paper explores safer and more cost-effective options. This paper also provides detail of how the configuration within a completed drift could be optimised to ensure all site specific needs are met with regard to future use of the drift. The paper also includes descriptions of the engineering solutions that are available for physical and atmospheric challenges specific to coal drift applications and how the TBM manufactures are adapting to the regulatory requirements are also covered.Due to downward pressure on high cost bases and ever increasing safety requirements the popularity of TBMs in the Australian mining sector can be expected to increase and eventually become the default delivery method for coal drift construction, building them cheaper, faster and?safer.CITATION:Sibthorpe, D, 2014. Although environmental and sustainable development reporting has now become widespread in the Australian mining and minerals processing sector, there remains a great deal of diversity in reporting contents and practice. Moreover concerns remain about the effectiveness of reporting for delivering the companyÆs business case for sustainable development as well as for communicating sustainable development performance to a range of external stakeholders. This paper therefore reviews the status of sustainable development reporting in the Australian minerals processing industry. Pertinent international and national developments are briefly captured, leading to a discussion of the framework for integrating sustainable development reporting with sustainable development management (as proposed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development). This leads to a discussion of the results of a comparative review of sustainable development reports of a cross-section of eight Australian resource companies. Best practice elements are highlighted in regard to reporting on company context, governance, performance and assurance.

The aim of this study is to examine the volumetric and mass movement characteristics of load and haul operations using statistical modelling of relatively large samples of bucket loads that are transported as small samples in the form of truck payloads. Generally, the factors influencing bucket load variability are random, difficult to predict and to control. In the process of loading trucks the underlying variability of individual bucket loads will determine the variability of truck payloads. Bucket loads of material prepared by drilling and blasting for loading into trucks are fundamental quantities in open pit mine production. A study of payload data from a large surface mining operation indicates that bucket loads and truck payloads that are a small sample of bucket loads are normally distributed. Truck payloads have a reduced dispersion compared with bucket loads that is an inverse 0.5 power function of the number of passes per truck payload. Comparison of statistical modelling results with the æ10/10/20Æ policy promoted by Caterpillar Global Mining Inc, indicate that compliance with the æ10/10Æ part of the policy, applying to truck overloading is facilitated, as the coefficient of variation of truck payloads decreases, as a result of the increasing number of loading passes. Compliance with the more stringent æ20Æ part of the policy, relating to safe steering and braking is also facilitated, albeit at lower coefficient of variation for similar reasons.

Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. It is recognised by the major international codes that resource classification involves the interaction of numerous qualitative and quantitative criteria such as data quality, geological and grade continuity, etc. However, the difficulty in quantifying the degree of uncertainty associated with mineral resources estimation has led to the creation of a large suite of methodologies, terms and definitions, with almost every mining company having its own set of standards. It is also intuitively known that several traditionally used methods to evaluate resources do not take into account the spatial continuity of the grades, being unable to provide a reliable measure of the error associated with their estimates. Since they do not provide an error assessment, these methods are inappropriate to assess local or global uncertainty associated with an estimate. Faced with these problems, this work aims at developing a methodology for either quantitative or qualitative analysis of mineral resources estimation, through incorporation of uncertainty and the correct definition of the associated risk or error. The proposed methodology includes the development of a software code incorporating all the main classification techniques used by the mineral industry. A comprehensive study about each technique was conducted allowing a comparison of the parameters affecting mineral inventory assessment. A case study was conducted with a typical iron ore deposit data set from the Conceitpo mine of the Itabira Complex in the Iron Quadrangle, Brazil. The results showed the specific limitations of each classification system and the influence in selecting their key parameters, always based on subjective choices.

‘Every mine is a pilot’ is an attitude which encourages the mining paradox of optimistic mine plans and equipment under performance; propped up by an environment lacking accountability. The premise that ‘every mine is a pilot’, appears to underlie the development and operating approach to most mines. It is the hypothesis of this paper that many mining companies, development teams and their managers largely ignore what is done elsewhere. Anecdotally, most planners don’t know whether the selected rates are high or low (rates based on theoretical models tend to be high – certainly higher than what most companies can achieve). Mines then consistently operate the equipment at rates well below targets; often more than 20 per cent below. Further to this paradox, mine performance data demonstrates the average mine is currently operating their equipment at levels of output not much more than half the output of those in the top ten per cent. On the whole mines don’t know the potential of their equipment and therefore don’t put appropriate plans in place to do better. After all, when ‘every mine is a pilot’ there is little reason to look to one’s peers for an indication of potential. This paper will outline why every mine is not a pilot and how mines do value some knowledge, but not as much as they should. This paper proposes a two-pronged approach to address this issue in the area of equipment performance. This approach is to:1. engage in better forecasting of equipment rates and better subsequent performance through benchmarking against industry standards2. provide conditions for more accountability.These parameters are linked and proper implementation of them will address the losses which many shareholders and financiers have incurred when investing in companies with unrealistic mining plans.CITATION:Lumley, G I, 2016. THE slag from the blast furnaces having been granulated, a representative sample is taken to the sample mill. It is then dried, crushed through a 100-mesh screen, intimately mixed, and packeted for assay purposes.METHOD OF ANALYSISINSOLUBLEWeigh 1 grm. of the finely-pulverized slag into a 3t-in. casserole, moisten with a little water to prevent sticking, cover with a clock glass, and add 20 cc. of hot acid (1 HNOs, 3 HCI, 4 H2 0). Evaporate slowly to dryness on a hot plate and bake (without overheating) until all the gelatinous silica is dehydrated. Cool, add 20 cc. HCI (1-1), and boil gently for several minutes; filter into a 300-cc. beaker, cleaning out the casserole thoroughly with a rubber-tipped glass rod. Wash residue with hot distilled water and transfer it to a No. 1 porcelain crucible. Dry, ignite, cool in a desiccator and weigh as total insoluble matter. Dilute filtrate to 200 cc. and neutralize some of the excess HCI with NHa.OH. Warm, and pass H2S for 15 min. Filter and wash withhot water. Boil off H2 S, oxidize with 5 cc. HNOll , reduce bulk of the solution by evaporation. to about 100 cc., and transfer to a 250 cc. flask.SILICAFuse insoluble residue over a blast lamp in a platinum crucible with three or four times its weight of anhydrous carbonate of soda, for 10 to 15 minutes, or until decomposition is complete. It is important to understand skarn-porphyry transitions in order to use exposed skarns to look for associated and potentially larger porphyries. For such purposes, a good start is to understand the transition between porphyry and skarn in known deposits. In this contribution, we report the transition at Antamina, Peru, where skarns occur in and around a Miocene complex comprised of more than seven porphyritic intrusions. There are three types of skarn-porphyry relationships. The earliest intrusive phase, P1A, contains both endoskarn and porphyry-style quartz veins with secondary biotite halos. The porphyry quartz veins and endoskarns formed at the same time. Locally, the intrusion contains only endoskarn without porphyry quartz veins and is surrounded by exoskarns in carbonate wall rocks. In the third scenario, later porphyry (P2) intruding into P1A porphyry and skarns related to P1A contains abundant granular quartz veins and secondary biotite alteration but does not have significant endoskarn. The granular quartz veins also extend into earlier P1A skarns. The scarcity of endoskarn associated with P2 is related to the supply of Ca. The earliest P1A intrusion intruded into carbonates that supplied abundant Ca, therefore both endoskarns and exoskarns formed.
