The Bowen Basin of Central Queensland covers a total area of 3 200 000 ha. The Basin has proven reserves of about 24 000 000 tonnes of coking coal and steaming coal which constitutes about 70 percent of the known coal reserves in Queensland. Large scale open cut coal mining in the Bowen Basin commenced at Moura in 1959. There are now 16 open cut mines operating in the Basin and they collectively mine through about 3000 ha of land each year. Most of the land which has been mined has previously been used for extensive grazing. No mining has yet taken place on cropping land although coal reserves underlie land which has been cropped or has potential for cropping. The primary objectives of almost all of the mining companies operating in the Bowen Basin are to rehabilitate mined land to a stable and productive form which is compatible with surrounding land use which is dominantly grazing. The acceptability of these objectives is considered against the prospect of mining of cropping land and the qualified success of the return of rehabilitated land to grazing uses.

The Ore Reserve System implemented at Mount Isa for Mount Isa Mines Limited is a comprehensive' computer system designed to process assay, geological, structural and survey data for Isa and Hilton Mines. This paper outlines the achievements of this system to date and by example, discusses the various reports and plotted output available. __ The impact of the ore reserve system particularly within the-Geology and Mine Plan ning Departments is reviewed in terms of new approaches to ore reserve calculations, evaluating the economics of various mining methods and reviewing preliminary stope designs. The compilation of metal distributions for both copper and lead orebodies at varying cut offs and reducing the involvement of skilled personnel in preparing non-standard plots of borehole paths are discussed. Options available through the system and their applications are outlined together with the planned future development of the system.

Two genetic types of base metal deposits occur in the Wainivesi area of central eastern Viti Levu. The Wainivesi deposit is now considered to be a stratiform volcanogenic type, and the Wailotu and Wainiviti deposits are described as contact metasomatic with some hydrothermal manifestations. The Wainivesi mineralization is correlated with the Tertiary "e" stage, i.e. uppermost Oligocene-Iowermost Miocene. Tertiary "e" stage rocks in Fiji are therefore potential ore producers of stratiform volcanogenic type. On the basis of plate tectonics with Fiji part of the New Hebrides Arc prior to rifting apart in the late Miocene, stratiform volcanogenic deposits of the Wainivesi type may also occur in rocks of comparable type and age in the New Hebrides.

In China, there are approximately 3,000,000 million m3 of gas (methane) included in highly gassy mines liable to coal/gas outbursts; the amount of methane pre-drainage possible is estimated at 400,000 - 500,000 million m3. At present, methane drainage has been carried out in 110 mines with a total amount of 19,000 million m3 methane produced during the period of 198 1- 1986. The methane drainage in coal mines of China can be divided into three types: from adjacent seams, from working face seams and from goafs, all with good results. In recent years, general attention has been paid to integrating methane drainage into the mining system but methane drainage from old goafs has to some extent been developed as well.

The theory of declining optimimum cut-off grades is more than 25 years old, but for a number of reasons it is still not widely used in industry. A lack of faith in the veracity of estimated grades is not in itself a reason to abandon any attempt to optimise cut-off grades. The use of declining cut-off grades has been thought to cause high-grading, but in fact this is only true if an artificially high discount rate is used in the calculations. Perfect application of an optimum cut-off grade should ensure that only ore generating more than a minimum net return is mined, and that as much as possible of the ore capable of generating that return is mined. Therefore differing mining costs in different parts of some underground mines necessitate local modifications to cut-off grade. Optimisation of cut-off grade is of necessity an iterative process. Integration of that process into a feasibility study need not be excessively time-consuming. A number of approximations can be made to speed the optimisation (any attempt to achieve a high level of accuracy is probably doomed to failure by a lack of precise cost and price projections). A procedure is outlined for optimising cut-off grade during planning of a typical underground mine.

This paper considers two particular empi- rical models for the processes of the generati- on of hydrochemical zoning and epithermal near- surface mineralization of mercury-antimony-arse- nic formation in the discharge area of the Uzon Caldera ore generating hydrothermal system in Kamchatka. Vertical and horizontal hydrochemical zo- ning is caused by mixture of infiltration waters of the surface formation with fluid of chloride- sodium composition which are supplied up the-zo- ne of deep fault. Ore formation is caused by simultaneous existence of two geochemical barriers, namely oxidizing and reductive. The first barrier is determined by the-level of ground waters. The second one forms under the clay-opal screen un- der the influence of two factors, namely the inflow of deep reduction sulphur compounds (which are transported together with arsenic, antimony and mercury) and the generation of hyd- rogen sulphide as a result of sulphur- and sul- phate reduction. X-ray-amorphous phase of orpi- ment composition and realgar phase are formed, respectively, on the oxidizing and reductive Barriers.

Nickel sulphide precipitated from waste liquors at the Yabulu plant of Queensland Nickel Pty Ltd was pressure leached under various conditions. Leaching at 130¦C and 700 kPa of air dissolved 95 per cent of the nickel as the sulphate in less than 2 h. Leaching at 130¦C and 350 kPa of oxygen dis- solved 95 per cent of the nickel in less than 1 h. Dissolution was faster with oxygen than with the equivalent pressure of air. Crystallization of hydrated nickel sul- phate from the resulting clarified leachate is readily achieved. Because the sulphide pre- cipitate also contains minor amounts of iron, copper and cobalt, the crystallization product contains these metals in excess of the amounts required for electrolytic-grade nickel sul- phate. This grade of product could only be produced if the contaminants were removed prior to crystallization. Alternatively, the "crude" nickel sulphate could find a market as a feed for the electrolytic production of Ni-Fe coatings.

MERLIN, the Queensland Department of Minerals and Energy's corporate geographic information system, provides ready access to all georeferenced data held by the department. Its aim is to provide a consistent, current, statewide coverage of timely information to assist in tenures management, exploration targeting and competing land use decision-making. Initially developed in 1988 and under continual enhancement since then, its functionality is the result of on-going close consultation with a wide range of departmental clients and potential users. A true geographic information system, MERLIN maintains both graphical data with linked textual information on a wide range of features of interest. The proprietary software products Arclnfo and Oracle are used to hold the graphics and attribute information respectively. Access to information is provided by a specially designed graphical user interface programed in-house. Hardcopy output of graphics displays including related attribute data as well as detailed reports of textual information can be retrieved at any departmental office. MERLIN is a network of computer systems which link each of the Department's regional offices and head office in Brisbane. The current state of exploration and mining is maintained by departmental officers processing tenure applications, transactions and dealings directly into the system. Data entered at regional offices are transferred overnight to head office to up-date central records and maintain a currency of data statewide as at the close of business the previous day. Through MERLIN the Department of Minerals and Energy now offers a much streamlined tenures management service as well as access to information about past exploration and mining, Queensland's mineral and energy occurrences and resources, and up-to-date information on the state's geology including maps, boreholes, geophysical surveys and field observations. In the future, this Geographic Information system will be invaluable to the mining industry in the development of mining projects.

An analysis of pumping figures suggests that there are two distinct styles of water inflow patterns in Zambia's mines. Carbonate hosted orebodies (Kabwe and Nampundwe) display a characteristic seasonal variation in water inflow with peak pumping showing a short time lag with respect to the rainfall pattern. Aquifer characteristics are controlled by secondary, weathering enhanced, near surface phenomena. Non-carbonate hosted orebodies such as those of the Copperbelt (Konkola and Nkana) occur in successions of highly variable lithology and consequently there are stacked aquifers of variable character. Inflow of water does not display seasonal variation. The major factors affecting the amount of inflow are the structural setting, the geometry of the orebody and the local lithostratigraphy. Thus the Konkola orebodies which occur in a saddle shaped open ended basin result in what is probably the wettest mine in the world, pumping some 376,000 cubic metres of water a day.

For some underground structures, the use of the plane strain assumption in stress analyses may not be justified. The finite element method and photoelasticity have been used to obtain complete 3-D solutions, but, for various reasons, neither method has found universal use. The boundary integral equation method (B.I.E.M.) can be more efficient and economical than the finite element method for 3-D problems involving large volume to surface area ratios. A B.I.E.M. program developed for calculating stresses and deformations in infinite elastic media has been used to determine the 3-D distributions of stress around T- and Y- junctions of circular tunnels in stress fields in which the ratios of horizontal to vertical stress are 0, 0.33, 1.0 and 2.0. For the T- junction considered,stress concentrations at the intersection are approximately twice the plane strain values. Except where horizontal field stresses are high, the stresses in both tunnels approximate the plane strain values at about two tunnel diameters from the point of intersection of the tunnel centre lines. The stresses in the two branches reach those for the corresponding plane strain, two parallel tunnel case two diameters from the point of intersection of thq inner tunnel walls. Very high stress concentra- tions occur in the pillar of rock between the inner tunnel walls near the point of intersection.

Development in the theory and practice of hearth drainage is reviewed. Difficulties in the hearth drainage were re- newed during late sixties and early seventies when the size of a blast furnace and the top pressure were increased to result in the increase in tapping rate. Hearth drainage was improved first by in- creased number of tapping and then decreased tapping rate as it was predicted by theoretical studies. State of the coke bed in the hearth, e.g., 'floating' or 'sitting-on' the hearth bottom, is discussed in relation with influential factors on it and its influence on the furnace operation. The 'sitting-on' coke bed is to be aimed at for the consistent furnace working and for the lower rate of erosion of the hearth refractory. As the continuous tapping became standard prac- tice in large blast furnaces, the interest in the basic research renewed. Prospect of the further research including mathematical modelling of the hearth drainage is discussed.

All industrial water users are required to hold Water Rights, which are in effect licences to take, use, dam, divert or discharge water. Water Rights are obtained through a legally defined process and any potentially affected party has the per to object to their granting. A special tribunal hears the evidence for and against an application, and issues its decision, which is reviewable in a higher court on Appeal. Rights, if granted, are issued subject to conditions and, in the case of mining discharges, limits would be set on flaw rate, suspended solids concentrations, turbidity, pH and the concentrations of any potential toxicants. This paper presents a case study of an integrated, catchment wide water management plan for Lake Waahi, that was prepared by the author, and others while the author was in the employ of CoalCorp, and its predecessor, State Coal Mines. Drilling and shooting techniques at Moura open-cut have evolved over a period of 16 years and are the result of hard earned experience combined with established practices and consul- tation with professional services. The wide range of overburden types encoun- ted in the field requires varying methods to achieve the best results at all times. Safe working conditions for the employees and protection of mining equipment is of para- mount importance and close liaison is maintain- ed with the Department of Mines Queensland to keep abreast with changing legislation. Drill patterns, charging profiles, types of explosives and ultimate results are des- cribed in detail along with a resume of equip- ment. Costs of drilling, labour and explosives are also analysed with a total of approximately 20c per cubic metre of shot ground. Future developments and improvements to facilities are also outlined.

The introduction of large diameter holes to underground mining has provided the first opportunity to apply near spherical charges in production scale blasts instead of the convent- ional long cylindrical charges generally used in stope and pillar mining. A modified version of the cratering prin- ciple was applied in the blast design in extrac- ting ore across a horizontal area of a stope or pillar. The new rock breaking technique has developed into the Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) mining system and eliminated raise boring, slot cutting and dilution of the ore by back- fill material. Furthermore it has reduced labour and time requirements thus becoming not only a low cost method of mining but the safest method of underground mining known today. Exceptionally fine muck is provided with a minimum of damage by blasts to walls and re- treating backs of the stope or pillar. The VCR method can also be used for drop- raising, and for the excavation of underground cavities for almost any purpose . The proper explanation of the breakage mechanism of the near spherical charges opposite to the cylindrical charges yet to be found. The scheme of rehabilitation of surface plant commenced in 1936, included the provision of improved and more hygienic changing and bathing facilities for the employees.At that time the Thompson's Shaft section of the British Mine was being prepared for a resumption of operations, and it was decided to repair and re-equip the existing building. Thus any new scheme adopted could be given a thorough trial, and the proved arrangement used as a basis for the contemplated new main changehouse on the North Section.Investigations were carried out to determine the most suitable arrangement for the Thompson's Shaft changehouse, to provide for a total of 120 men, with particular regard to the internal fittings and fixtures. Also, as the mining conditions were such that a large proportion of clothes worn underground by miners, etc., were wet by the end of the shift, the problem of drying these clothes in the availaole time from a man coming off shift to his commencing again some sixteen hours later was one of the most important to be dealt with.The changehouses in use on the North mine section of the lease were provided with racks around the walls for the men to hang their street clothes on, and a section was partitioned off to house the mine clothes and their drying facilities. The actual drying was carried out by means of hanging the wet clothes over racks between which ran pipe coils heated by means of hot water circulated from the hot water boiler supplying the showers.This method had proved to be far from satisfactory for several reasons, the main objections being:-

Studies were carried out on dissolution and oxidation of iron powder in ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution using oxygen over pressures. Cobalt and nickel losses during iron oxidation under different conditions were investigated. Regression equations were derived for percent cobalt loss and percent iron oxidation using ammonia, ammonium carbonate and oxygen partial pressure as the variables. The equations were tested for adequacy using Fisher's test. Cobalt losses increased with the increase of initial cobalt concentration and about 400 mg/l of cobalt was lost from a solution containing 500 mg/l cobalt. A maximum of about 80 mg/l nickel was lost from 1 g/l nickel containing solution, and this loss remained the same even when the nickel concentration was increased to 7.5 g/l.

Design of cemented fill in mining is often carried out without any consideration of the structure of the fill. The composition of cemented fills varies in the stopes due to the placement method, and the strength of the fill in the laboratory depends on the density, orient- ation, moisture content and drainage conditions. Within each stope there are definite zones and the structure of both cemented rockfill and cemented hydraulic fill has to be defined for each zone and the field conditions simulated in the laboratory. Structure also affects fill permeability and compressibility. From a study of the cemented fill in place, the effect of changes in the placement methods can be seen and then controlled to improve fill performance and economy. These features of cemented hydraulic fill and cemented rockfill behaviour are discus- sed and illustrated through reference to field and laboratory work undertaken at Mount Isa.

The main difference between this technique and other simplified methods is that a non-uniform boundary condition is allowed for. This permits radiative heat transfer between surfaces of different wetness in addition to evaporative and convective heat and mass transfer.
