The development of a process for the extraction of antimony from materials produced by Greenbushes Tin Limited has been carried out based on theoretical and laboratory studies. The materials treated have included concentrates of tantalite and cassiterite containing antimony at levels ranging from 0.3% to 2%. Roasting under controlled atmospheres is required to stabilise Sb203 rather than the low vapour pressure metal or higher oxide. Sulphidising additives such as pyrite, pyrrhotite or sulphur give enhanced antimony removal from tantalite and cassiterite at roasting temperatures of 900¦ to 1100¦C. Substantial elimination of antimony to levels of 0.1% or less was Achieved.

In open cut gold mining at Mt Magnet and Reedy, grade control sampling is done with inclined RC drilling using one metre samples. In the small open cuts at Rothsay blasthole sampling was successfully used. Underground sampling for gold and copper grades at Rothsay is done using chip sampling. At the Youanmi open pits both Ditchwitch Earthsawing and RC drilling are used.All assay data are interpreted on sections and plans using a customised SURPAC system. Reconciliations of the grade control predictions of tonnes and grade against initial ore reserves, mining production and milling results are carried out monthly.

Tertiary laterite is extensively developed in the Darling Range area, but there is doubt that. the high relief areas along the Darling Scarp have been peneplaned. Three distinct laterite types are distinguished which are termed transported, introduced and residual laterites to avoid ambiguity. Transported laterites are recemented (primarily) lateritic materials and introduced laterites are chemical deposits of bog iron type. Residual laterites are formed in situ from the host material which can be either decomposed bedrock or detrital' clay, and the two varieties formed from these sources are termed residual A and residual B laterites. The genetic requirements for residual laterite formation are (1) host material, (2) porosity and permeability, (3) rainfall, (4) temperature, (5) relief and drainage, (6) vege- tation and (7) time. Previous theories on the origin of laterite appear to be inadequate and incompatible with field observations. Field investigations and drilling in the Darling Range area disclosed lenticular section and thickest laterite development on slopes and thin or oc- casionally no laterite development on crests. The mining industry has come through a period of major change in community expectations regarding safety and environmental impact and these changes can be expected to continue in the future. These changes are ultimately reflected in Government regulations and industry safety standards and form the basis of the ælicense to operateÆ. Equally, advances in technology have made possible new equipment and processes either available now, or close to completion, that will allow mines to meet these more stringent expectations if properly introduced. Changes in technology provide opportunities for mine management to introduce new systems that will remove people from hazardous areas and lead to improvements in the ætriple bottom lineÆ. In a longer time frame of five to ten years, novel and advanced technologies that are currently being developed will deliver new mining methods and conversion of presently uneconomic resources to ore. This is consistent with the time frame required to develop a new mine from discovery. Strategic decisions can be taken now by mine designers to enable the introduction of these major technology changes. Examples of both practical and strategic opportunities are drawn from the integration of rock cutting/blasting, automation, electronic communications and new mining methods. This paper discusses emerging industry trends, changes to legislative framework and some practical choices for existing and imminent technology.

A limitation to present theoretical roof reinforcement design methods is the inability to derive accurate and quantitative information about the roof rock condition and the action of reinforcement at various excavation stages. To obtain the information required to assess roof rock stability, detailed monitoring of the in-situ behaviour of reinforcement and roof strata is required. Reliable instru- mentation and techniques have been developed for use in underground coal mines to identify the geometry and magnitude of displacements occurring in roof rock and the forces generated in reinforcement. The use of such instrumentation allows an accurate assessment of the in-situ capability of reinforcement and the mode of reinforcing action developed. In-situ monitoring can supply data required for the practical design of reinforce- ment and assess the potential stability of current designs. The use of such data together with mine wide appraisal of rock and stressfield considerations, can allow roof reinforcement to be designed on the basis of a predicted roof Response.

A dynamic model of a dense medium circuit has been developed and tested against plant data. The model shows the response of the circuit to both controlled (changes in specific gravity set point or changes in circuit coal feed rate) and uncontrolled changes (changes in raw coal moisture, loss of raw coal feed) in operating conditions. The model is built up from dynamic models of the individual sumps, pumps, pipes, splitters, magnetic separators and automatic controllers in the circuit. The model can be used for design of automatic control loops and for investigation of possible process modifications such as changes in water addition points. This paper describes the model construction, the testing of the model against actual plant data and gives some examples of its use in investigating plant response to changes in operating conditions.

Recent research by CRC LEME from an Australian mineral exploration perspective, has focussed on regolith architecture and mechanisms of geochemical anomaly formation, within transported regolith. Methods have been developed for the rapid production of regolith-landform maps which is the starting point for understanding regolith architecture in the third dimension. Methods for development of 3D regolith models are less well advanced, and require integration of all available geological and geophysical datasets, but still with a heavy reliance on drill-hole information. The base of the transported regolith û the unconformity û remains the most important regolith boundary for geochemical sampling in transported regolith terrains. A new generation portable spectral logger, employing a broader spectrum can interpret important features from drill chips within the regolith. This allows internal architecture, redox fronts and the all-important interface to be objectively identified. Transported lateritic components can provide vectors to mineralisation in depositional regimes. Palaeomagnetic and new radiometric methods which date individual phases of the regolith provide evidence of different episodes, each characterised by different geochemical dispersion patterns in transported regolith. Along with lateritic residuum, calcrete is prime sampling medium. Calcrete is probably enriched in gold through physical and biological processes, rather than straight chemical processes. In South Australia, the lowermost calcrete layer buried within the depositional regime, especially where it lies directly over the silcrete layer at the buried interface, is the desired sampling medium. Certain gum trees, with deep roots in transported regolith have been shown to record anomalous values of gold and basemetals in leaves, twigs and bark. Anomalous metals in acid-sulfate soil seeps can also provide a window through sedimentary cover in respect of mineralisation in the basement. A number of Yilgarn occurrences of gold anomalies in transported cover, strongly infer hydromorphic and biological mobilisation of gold. This inference is supported by micro-analyses of regolith mineral hosts in hardpans and mottled sediments, which show gold and pathfinder elements prefer to reside in goethite and specific types of clay minerals. This creates anomalies in specific mineral phases. However the inference that that these are sites of mobile or labile metal ions remains enigmatic. Similarly there is inconclusive evidence that selective extractions will provide an anomaly not otherwise detected by conventional total dissolution methods. Hydrogeochemistry is a promising exploration tool for basemetal exploration. The importance of microbes in both the dissolution and precipitation of gold in the Australian regolith is demonstrated. We are on the verge of identifying the functional gene sequence of individual active microbes. A consideration of possible mechanisms for creating anomalies in soils above transported regolith, presents difficulties in facilitating upward movement of ions from the watertable to the surface. Perhaps the best avenues of research lies with surrogate soil gases, and biotic transfers.

An ongoing challenge in the coal industry is pyrite removal using the flotation method for fine particles. The use of a æseparation in frothÆ (SIF) technique to recover coarse particles of up to a few millimetres in size has presented a potential solution. However the commercial success of SIF is still limited due to the poor understanding of the separation mechanism. The particle floatability in SIF is determined by the constructive or destructive stresses resulting from the forces exerted by the particle on the bubble films. Hence, the surfactant properties and the mineral characteristics (eg hydrophobicity, shape, etc) are the key factors that control the interaction between the particle and froth. In the present work, the interaction forces between different particles (ie crushed glass, pyrite and coal) and a single air bubble are measured in a non-ionic surfactant solution (pentaethylene glycol mono n-dodecyl ether, C12E5) using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Experimental results show that the interaction is primarily dependent on the contact angle (ie the degree of hydrophobicity of the minerals). For crushed glass, the transition from repulsion to attraction was observed as the contact angle increased. As the concentration of C12E5 increased, the adhesion force was suppressed due to wrapping effect. For coal and pyrite with much higher hydrophobicity, long-range attraction was observed. The effect of shape factor was only visible at high surfactant coverage where sign of destabilisation became noticeable on the retracting force curve. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the direct interaction forces of a complex real system between an irregular particle of either crushed glass, pyrite or coal and a single air bubble. Theories developed for interpretation and modelling are thus far based upon the study of ideal systems of glass or polystyrene spheres and an air bubble and were incapable of explaining the interactions in complex real systems. The presented measurements were a first approach to the problem of real mineral-bubble interaction in flotation systems. Thus, the results can only best be interpreted semi-quantitatively.

The current methodology for delineating and subsequently evaluating coal reserves is based on the use of vertical drill holes and surface based geophysics/geology. These techniques have three major problems, these being respectively:-a) Vertical drill holes can only provide a small sample of the coal seam and stratigraphy. Therefore the planar variation in coal reserve and environment parameters can only be approximated.b) Although surface based geophysics has had its fair share of success in recent years, there are still environments which have masked the finding of major structures.c) Access to drill sites is difficult at some locations due to mountaineous terrain, standing water and environmental impact.

Simulations of complex physical phenomena, such as hurricanes and fluid flow around space vehicles, can now be effectively explored using modem visualisation techniques which have been developed to examine the results of numerical modelling using supercomputers. These techniques are also being applied extensively in medical investigations, including viewing the interior of the human brain. We have now applied these same techniques to the visualisation of gold deposits.Grade control in open pit gold mining operations may involve the collection of at least half a million samples in each mine. Extensive drilling programs also accompany the early reserve evaluation stages and exploration in advance of mining. Maximum utilisation of these very large amounts of information requires an ability to integrate, examine and present large three-dimensional data sets in order to be able to derive and effectively communicate information on grade distribution and geological controls.

With the recent increase in the number of underground secondary sulphide dust explosions in Canada, Australia and elsewhere in massive sulphide ore mining industry, establishment of quantitative and realistic methods of analyzing the mine dust is of paramount importance. This paper examines and analyses dust samples from a mine area that has very recently experienced sulphide dust explosions. Also, it attempts to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of the dust. Explosibility of the dust samples was determined by quantifying the oxidation reaction of the sulphide dust particles in a 1.2 L, Lindenberg open horizontal tube furnace. Percentage sulphur', % S oxidised during ignition of a dust sample of known assay, % S and dust concentration (g/m3) were determined by the quantitative chemical analysis of SO2 gas produced during the oxidation reaction. A dust sample with high sulphur content, 22.3% S (assayed) and mean particle size 9.82 pm, was found to exhibit a low degree of oxidation compared with a sample of low sulphur content, 15.44% S and mean particle size 21.7 tcm, at the same Temperature.

PT Newmont Minahasa Raya (PT NMR) is an Indonesian joint venture subsidiary of the Newmont Gold Company of Denver, Colorado, USA. PT Newmont Minahasa Raya operates a 700 000 tonne per annum gold plant in the Minahasa region of North Sulawesi, Indonesia. At full capacity the plant is expected to produce an average of 150 000 to 180 000 ounces of gold per year until the year 2007 based on current existing reserves.Exploration began in 1986 and high grade mineralisation was discovered in 1988. Subsequent drilling defined a resource of approximately 2000 000' ounces. Reserves as of 1 January 1997 were 7 035 000 tonnes grading 8.46 grams per tonne, for 1 913 000 contained ounces. Metallurgical testwork commenced in 1991. Construction of the plant started in late-1994 and the first gold was poured in March 1996.

IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some millions of tons of rich copper-gold ore, averaging about 45%to 50%silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap limestone were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting Operations started with one furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore from the mine, containing very little silica. When the second furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from small deposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Kabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required-viz., 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. The Pacific Mobile Belt (PMB) is characterized by old origin and complex evolution both in time and space. As the global structure, the PMB is a narrow tectonic region dividing two plan-etary hemispheres, viz. the Pacific and IndoAfro-Atlantic ones, the relative shifting of which defines the character of many geodynamic processes in this belt. The PMB features inhomogeneity of structure, special matter composition characteristics, sharply broken-out topography, and intensive fields. Generalized anomalies of the gravitational field closely correspond to the PMB boundaries defined by the real features, i.e. the andesite line and distribution areals of Mesozoic-Cenosoic granitoids. The belt boundary position is controlled also by seismic velocity anomalies at a depth of down to 200 km. The modern PMB deformation is defined by the left-hand equatorial shift and rotation of the Pacific Ocean counterclockwise. This rotation is non-uniform in time and of an oscillating character. The motive forces of the phenomenon are considered.

The basic flowsheet for the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter and Kwinana Nickel Refinery are discussed in relation to the mineral components of Kambalda produced nickel concentrates. Both processes handle violarite and pentlandite satisfactorily but the smelter has limitations where high copper recovery is required and in its ability to handle magnesia containing minerals. While the latter can be more economically handled at Kwinana the limitations of this tolerance are discussed together with problems arising from treating pyrrhotite, pyrite and precious metals by the Sherritt Gordon process.

The orebodies at Kambalda are complexly faulted, folded and intruded. It is realized that the ore reserve calculations will be wrong and steps are taken to minimise the errors. The calculations are a combination of computer data handling and manual input. Initially Geological Ore Reserves are calculated and then production data and experience are used to produce a Planned Mining Reserve. At all stages maximum professional judgement is incorporated. The basis of the calculation is the polygonal method of area estimation, and production reconciliations together with the style of data available indicate that it is a most suitable technique. It is also a tech- nique that is easily communicated to all levels from operators to management.

Coal Mining Land Use on the southern coalfields often preceded other land uses. Over the past century overlying land use has altered significantly, particularly with water supply storage development, road system building, railways, pipelines, electricity reticulation schemes and general urban develop- ment. National Parks were declared over coal bearing lands. Little regard was paid to the coal under the land surface by land developers, Government instrumentalities, central planners and the Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board and others, and little value was placed on this valuable energy source. These bodies derived no benefit from the under- lying mineral. In these circumstances, mine operators and such surface land users were put into adversary roles. Mass sterilisation of coal resources resulted. The loss of reserves continues, although the problem has become better under- stood. An Energy Impact Statement (EIS) submission by all surface land developers has been proposed as a means to justify the impact of the development on the coal reserves Beneath.

The Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories Ltd. (A.C.I.R.L.) MINVENT computer program can be used to simulate existing and projected colliery ventilation requirements. New collieries can be planned using a database of ventilation parameters which were ascertain- ed by A.C.I.R.L. surveys at selected collieries in N.S.W. and Queensland. Several techniques are used in both the formulation of the database and in the evaluat- ion of a ventilation system, prior to analysis by the MINVENT program. The analysis of a ventilation system requires the measurement of air quantities, pressures and hence airway resistances. All resistances are calculated at standard air density of 1.205 kg/m3. Air densities are derived from barometric pressure and wet and dry bulb temperature readings. Airway frictional and shock losses, leakage through stoppings and overcasts, flow of air through regulators, face resistance and resistance of anomalous ventilation features are related to the typical Australian measured data presented.

Underground production from the low grade copper orebodies at Mount Lyell in recent years has involved surface subsidence of open cut areas. Relevant structural and lithological features of the geological environment are des- cribed. The highly mechanised underground mining system involves sublevel caving and sub- level open stoping with associated hangingwall cave. Monitoring of subsidence and caving has been made by regular visual inspection and measurement of crack development, and by sur- face profile surveys. These simple techniques have proved adequate in assuring management that ground movement is proceeding normally and safely.
