Between, 1980 and 1984, the demand for non- ferrous metals in the free world grew annually by 1.5 per cent for copper, 0.4 per cent for lead, 1.4 per cent for zinc, and 2.5 per cent for nickel. The growth rate decreased substantially compared to the rate experienced before 1980, and was far lower than the GNP growth during the corresponding period. The main reasons for this are considered to be 1. resource-saving efforts by industrialized countries resulting from the first and the second oil crises, 2. saturated demand for durable consumer goods, and 3. substitution of non-ferrous metals by new materials such as optical fibers.

A metallurgical evaluation of the Argyle Kimberlite No. 1 (AKl) orebody has been carried out using a 40 tonnes per hour pilot plant. Pilot plant results, together with laboratory investigations provided a basis for the determination of process design criteria for a major treatment plant. Various sampling programmes were carried out to determine specific aspects in the evaluation of diamond liberation. Treatment parameters such as the top crush size, recrush size and the bottom cut-off size were investigated. This paper first describes the essentials of the slurry shield method and its achievements, then problems encountered during driving tunnels and their countermeasures, and finally shows problems to be solved in the future. The author works at Tekken Construction Co., Ltd. as a director. All the data cited are based on material gained from the slurry shield tunneling works undertaken by the said company. The mark, viz*, indicates that Tekken Construction Co., Ltd. has obtained or is applying for a patent in the U.S., Europe and Japan. 1. The Radio Hill nickel-copper deposit is located 30 km south of Karratha. It is a new discovery in an area where similar mineralization had been previously discovered at Mt. Scholl and Ruth Well. Radio Hill is the first massive Ni-Cu sulphide deposit of economic significance to have been located in the Western Pilbara.Preliminary studies indicate that the sulphide mineralization occurs within gabbros, pyroxenites and peridotites of a basic igneous cumulate layered sequence. Primary sulphides have been subsequently remobilized and concentrated as stringer and massive mineralization. This is tentatively attributed to the intrusion of a further gabbroic body.The deposit appears to be of the gabbroic association type with a Ni:Cu ratio varying from 1:4 in the outer parts of the mineralized envelope to 1:0.9 towards the central zones. In drill core observations, chalcopyrite surrounding pyrrhotite was noted in many instances. Drilling has so far delineated a body developed over a strike length of 600 m and a horizontal width of up to 25 m. The mineralization plunges 20° to the southwest with a southerly dip varying from 75° in the west to about 20° - 30° in the east.The deposit is a leaf-shaped ore zone, plunging southwest from a vertical depth of 17 m in the north to 300 m in the south. The massive sulphides occur as lensoid masses within this zone. A geological resource of up to 2.5 million tonnes at 1.5 per cent Ni and l.4 per cent Cu is indicated.The predominant sulphides are pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite, with significant cobalt, platinum group metals and gold. Tellurides of Pd, Bi and Pb were detected by scanning electron microprobe within the pyrrhotite and other trace metals include Zn and native tin. Massive magnetite is sometimes associated with the massive pyrrhotite intersections.A test on one composite massive sulphide sample showed that pyrrhotite is present mainly as the non-magnetic hexagonal variety and only 10 per cent is present as magnetic monoclinic pyrrhotite.The deposit has no surface expression and its identification was based mainly Oil drilling targets generated by geophysical methods. No secondary minerals have been observed in association with the primary sulphides, even though the deposit is only 17 m below surface in the northern part.

The Teutonic Bore deposit lies in a major greenstone belt within the Archaean Yilgarn craton of Western Australia. It occurs towards the base of a suite of tholeiitic basalts, some 100 m above a felsic volcanic pile of rhyolitic composition. Sediments comprise a minor, albeit important, percentage of the mine stratigraphy.The deposit consists of a single, steeply dipping lens of massive sulphides totalling 1.4 million tonnes grading 4.16 per cent Cu, 16.4 per cent Zn, 1.22 per cent Pb and 203 g/t Ag. In addition, cross cutting "stringer" mineralisation in the footwall contributes a further 0.75 million tonnes at 2.38 per cent Cu, 1.92 per cent Zn and 52 g/t Ag to the mining reserves. Principal primary sulphides in massive and disseminated mineralisation are sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena, while minor amounts of arsenopyrite and argentiferous tetrahedrite are also present. Weathering has affected the primary mineralogy down to at least 90 m, resulting in a strongly leached oxide profile to about 85 m, overlying a thin, erratic zone of chalcocite supergene enrichment.Lateral metal zoning is marked both in massive sulphide and stringer mineralisation, with Cu/Zn ratios decreasing away from the centre of the orebody. Alteration is well developed in association with footwall stringer mineralisation, changing from a central Fe-Mg carbonate, chlorite and silica alteration zone below the massive sulphides to an outer halo of sericitisation. The spatial distribution of these minerals is patchy. Geochemically, the footwall alteration zone is characterised by central Cao, Na20 and Sr depletion (with less regular enrichment of SiO2 , Fe and MgO), surrounded by a peripheral zone of K20 enrichment.Evidence supports a classic volcanic-exhalative origin, involving submarine discharge on the flanks of a rhyolitic dome and accumulation of the massive sulphides in a local palaeotopographic depression. The sulphides overlie their feeder zone as shown by alteration and stringer mineralisation. Tholeiitic wallrocks are thought to be genetically unrelated to the mineralising solutions, although their presence as a cap over the felsic volcanics may have permitted the build up of a circulating metalliferous brine system prior to sulphide deposition.

In recent years new instrumentation and digital technology have Wrote possible a new facet of goo-physics: broadband seismology. From digitally record-ing networks and arrays. broadband scistnograrns of body waves that are flat to displacement and veloc-ity in at least the frequency range from 0.01 to 5.0 liz can now be routinely obtained for most carthquakes of magnitude greater than about 5.5. In contrast to data from conventional narrowband seismographs, broad-band body waves have sufficient spectral information to nvest,igate the many frequency-dependent eflects that may arise from source finiteness and from wave prop-agat ion phenomenon. Besides the usual parameters of depth. moment and focal mechanism, broadband data have sufficient spectral information to provide estimates of radiated energy, associated stresses and the frequency dependence of source parameters. Moreover. teleseis-mically recorded broadband data and near-field strong motion accelerograms overlap in the frequency band be-tween about 0.1-2.0 Hz. Thus. v it h broadband data it is possible to connect far field and near field data in order to make estimates of acceleration for almost any seismically active region of the circum-Pacific.

Camel Creek Mine operated by Lynch Mining Pty Ltd is located 65 km west of inghain and 160 kin north west of Townsville in North Queensland. (Figure 1). The Camel Creek gold mineralisation was discovered in mid-1987 in an area previously known for its tin workings. Mining commenced in January 1989 after an oxide reserve of 1.2 million tonnes @ 2.1 g/t gold had been delineated. The first gold pour was in May 1989. The mine developed into a medium sized open cut operation, with full site facilities. The initial mining rate was 500 000 tpa utilising run-of-mine (ROM) heap leaching to recover the gold. By the end of 1990 the wider orehodies were mined and efforts were focused on the narrow orebodies, of width typically less than three metres. Smaller earth moving equipment was employed to selectively mine the narrow orehodies leading to a decrease in the mining rate to 200 000 tpa. The Red Gold deposit (80 000 tonnes « 3.0 g/t to 18 in vertical) was mined in mid-1990 and ore was hauled approximately 8 kin to the Camel Creek heap leach operation. The ore was hauled in a dedicated campaign after being stockpiled. The cost of dedicated ore haulage ensured that only the more exceptional of the remote orebodies could be mined in this manner. The Golden Cup orebody, some 20 km from Camel Creek, was too distant to permit ore haulage. However, this prospect contained sufficient gold (initially 90 000 tonnes @ 3.0 g/t) to warrant the installation of a small mobile adsorption facility. Construction of the second heap leach operation commenced in late-1990. Gold production commenced in early April 1991. Mining of several smaller orebodies remote to the second heap leach facility has been undertaken and further mining is planned. This paper outlines heap leaching practice at Camel Creek Mine and summarises the success of the Golden Cup heap leach.

The Myojin Tunnel, located on the Shikoku Expressway being constructed by the Japan Highway Public Corporation, is 3,770 m long with a cross sectional area of 80 m2. Kajima Corporation, the contractor for the northern construction section of this tunnel, adopted here its newly developed "mini-bench" method of excavation. The objectives of this method were 1. to be able to perform all tunnelling operations using the whole cross sectional area of the tunnel under any ground conditions, and 2. to be able to vary the length of the mini-bench within the range of 0 to 7 m according to ground conditions. In order to achieve these objectives, original, sophisticated equipment was developed and employed in the work. One of the newly developed machines is a special jumbo, a hydraulic crawler jumbo with five rotary type booms. This machine is capable of accommodating variation in the length of the mini-bench accompanying changes in ground conditions and is equipped with a special mechanism by which the positions of the booms can be controlled by means of hydraulic cylinders. Also developed was a shotcrete robot for use with the mini-bench method which has the control board near the shotcrete nozzle for close control of application.

Manganese nodules cover great areas of deep ocean floor far from land, and have long been considered a major potential resource of nickel, copper, cobalt and perhaps manganese. A decade ago there was a period of intense evaluation of nodule fields, especially those lying between the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zones in international waters southeast of Hawaii. There, nodules are abundant and of high grade (average of 2.4% Ni+Cu+Co). The evaluation activity has since declined, but a recent agreement on lease boundaries among all interested parties may lead to a resurgence of work. Indeed, French and Japanese groups have pushed ahead with field and economic assessments.The Southwest Pacific, where there are large nodule fields in the waters of the Cook Islands and Kiribati, has seen considerable assessment of resources in the last ten years, especially through a major field programme of the Japanese Metal Mining Agency. The best prospect appears to be in the South Penrhyn Basin, in Cook Islands waters, where nodules are very abundant but of only moderate grade (1% Ni+Cu+Co). Using a cut-off of 5 kg of wet nodules per m2, Cronan (1989) and Cronan et al. (1989) have estimated the total resource to be a huge 110 million tonnes of Ni+Cu+Co.

THE following description of the surface plant of the Great Fitzroy Mines is to be understood as having been compiled by a mechanical engineer, who concerns himself more with the various appliances used, their correct construction to enable them to accomplish their prescribed work, and the production and transmission of the power required to operate them, than with the reasons for the physical and chemical processes which those appliances are called upon to assist in carrying out. Hence the metallurgist will not find herein more than the skeleton of the organism, which perhaps he would wish to be clothed with the detailed description of the substances undergoing treatment, in their various combinations, at all stages, and the results attained in separating the valuable constituents from the worthless. So, also, no details will be found of the methods employed by the management for. the purpose of determining by sampling and assaying the nature of the various products obtained.GENERALThe ore being worked at the Great Fitzroy Mine is divided into two classes :-1. Ore that requires concentration before smelting.2. Ore that can be smelted direct.Flow-sheet (Fig. 1) shows in outline the process of treatment to which ore of the first class is subjected, and the writer will endeavour to fill in that outline with some details of the appliances used.

Geological data processing by machine enables'an increased rate of coverage, better supervision and control of field programmes, increased effectiveness of field operators, and vastly improved access to old and new field data. Even a system of restricted felxibility enables a mapping programme to be organ- ized and conducted independent of personnel changes, whilst elimination of much compilation time increases the rate of cover- age such that it relates to mode of transport and geological complexity rather than to personality factors. A machine is useful only if applied to tasks suited to its capabilities, and must be aimed at those types of mapping in which a limited number of attributes adequately define the problem, and the data is of a form suited to coding and is normally collected in sufficient abundance to make compilation wearisome. Machine systems are therefore unsuited to most types of lithological mapping and to most types of exploration in new areas, but have proved useful in many branched of cartographic geophysics (e.g. gravity and magnetics), and in cartographic Geochemistry.

Mechanical agitation is the preferred system for Carbon-in-Pulp processes. Agitator design requires an understanding of the relationships between energy, shear and flow and the nature of shear rates and shear stress distribution in an agitated tank. Laser techniques are useful when studying these phenomena. The alternatives are open impeller agitation or draft tube circulation. Each has advantages and disadvantages but both require careful choice of impeller and system geometry. Overall the draft tube circulator is the more attractive in many cases. Open impeller agitators are designed in accordance with established procedures for mineral slurries taking due account of shear effects in tanks containing carbon. Preferred tank proportions are 1:1. Circulator design methods were developed in the alumina industry before being applied to CIP processes. Optimum draft tube diameter is critical to power requirements. The overall system must be designed as an axial flow pump operating in a closed circuit. Such a system exhibits quite characteristic behaviour which requires an impeller of varying pitch angle and aerofoil section for best stability and efficiency.' Tank height may be 2 or more times diameter. Resuspension of settled solids can be assisted by a series of slots in the draft tube. These slots have the secondary effect of stabilizing hydraulic behaviour and reducing installed power requirements.

The progressive changes in filling style in the Mount Isa copper mines from a dry fill based cemented rock fill to tailings based paste fill and slurry fills is explained. The development of shotcrete arched bulkheads and engineered drainage system is described. Details on how Mount Isa Mines has achieved approximately 30 per cent cost reduction in backfill operations through innovations are given. The development of a rocky paste fill is explained.

The Que River Mine is a small under-ground base and precious metals mine located in north-western Tasmania. Current production rate is 220,000 tonne/yr from reserves grading 0.37% copper, 7.1% lead, 12.2% zinc, 195 g/tonne silver and 3.4 g/tonne gold.Ore is mined using longhole open stoping techniques. Cemented fill is placed in primary stopes to permit safe and efficient recovery of pillars. The operation is trackless with both shaft and decline access from surface.Ore produced is trucked 40 km by road to be sold to the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australia Ltd., for treatment at their Rosebery concentrator.

The Wonthaggi coalfield is in South Gippsland, about 90 miles southeast of Melbourne. It is situated on the down-faulted block of the South Gippsland highlands that lies south of the Kongwak fault, between the Powlett River and the sea (Fig. 1). The coal, which is of Jurassic age, occurs in two small, and intensely faulted, limnic basins, that lie on either side of a concealed ridge of Silurian sediments. The coal was first found as thin seams outc1'opping in the cliffs at Cape Paterson, but the seams that are worked at Wonthaggi are concealed beneath a veneer of Cainozoic sands that covers the Jurassic strata, and were found by boring.The c9al seams are worked by the State Coal Mine, which was opened in 1909 to ensure a supply of coal for the Victorian railways, following a prolonged strike in the Newcastle field of New South Wales. Recovery of tin and copper from concen trates containing cassiterite, stannite and chalcopyrite was studied in laboratory-scale tests designed to simulate continuous operation of the matte fuming process in which tin is recovered as SnS fume while copper accumulates in the matte. Charges made up of 300g of mixtures of the concentrate and siliceous flux were added at a uniform rate in pelletized form to crucibles containing 300g of matte and 50g of slag (both of which were recovered from previous tests), while blowing through the matte with air or oxygen-nitrogen mixtures at a rate of 3 to 5 1/min. Accurate material balances enabled the effects of process operating conditions on tin recovery and sulfur utilization to be deter- mined. When operated correctly, the matte fuming process gave tin recoveries exceeding 90 percent in spite of wide variations in the copper content of the matte and in the operat- ing conditions. Deterioration of tin recovery was associated with undersaturation of the slag with respect to silica, and with high partial pressure of sulfur dioxide (greater than approx- imately 0.2) brought about by oxygen enrichment of the blowing air. The utilization of sulfur varied widely in low grade mattes. Copper in excess of approx- imately 10% promoted formation of SO2 by the commonly accepted reaction: FeS + 1-120 2= FeO + S02 while in copper-free and lower grade mattes a substantial fraction of the oxygen was consumed in the alternative reaction FeS + i 02 = FeO + z S2.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (<1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. The Rahu and Ascot epithermal Au-Ag prospects are two km north of the Karangahake deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield, and all occur in an approximately 6 km2 north-south elongated magnetic æquietÆ zone. The prospects are hosted by andesitic flows, lithic-crystal tuffs and local sedimentary rocks; local silica sinter occurs at Ascot. These host rocks are intensely altered by quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and calcite. Several minerals show zoned distributions, such as widespread adularia that overlies more localised and deeper albite. Illite is the only dioctahedral phyllosilicate in several drill holes, but elsewhere it forms a shallow carapace underlain by interstratified illite-smectite with 50 to 90 percent illite. Veins are common with quartz dominating near the surface and calcite becoming more abundant at depth. Local laumontite-calcite veins also occur. Pseudosecondary and secondary fluid inclusions in quartz and calcite at Rahu and Ascot have homogenisation temperatures (Th) that range from 162¦ to 268¦C and 128¦ to 243¦C, respectively. Most inclusions have trapped dilute fluids with salinities of less than 1.9 weight percent NaCl equivalent, but 20 percent of the inclusions have salinities of 2.0 to 10.5 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest that the water table at Rahu occurred at 440 m above sea level (asl). At Ascot, silica sinter formed from discharging geothermal fluids (=100¦C) at the paleosurface at ~135 m asl. However the sinter also contains comb quartz with pseudosecondary inclusions that have a Th average of 229¦C, corresponding to a paleowater table at ~430 m asl during inclusion entrapment. Taken together, these results suggest that the Ascot sinter was buried by approximately 300 m of cover material during a major volcanic or tectonic event, and that subsequent hydrothermal fluids formed veins and alteration at Rahu and deposited comb quartz at Ascot.

  This paper describes the design and construction of the upper section of the Pike River Mine Access Road. The road extends 11 km from Logburn Road alongside Big River on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand up Pike Stream to the new mine portal on White Knight Stream (Figure 1). This new road starts on alluvial terraces, then partially follows an old logging road before entering virgin bush and traversing the true left bank of a steep sided gorge on Pike Stream some 50 - 100 m above the stream before dropping down to the mine entrance. Its development has been an extended process from route selection, consenting through to design and construction.   The paper focuses on the 1 km section of road between the Amenities Area (Figure 1) and the portal. This section of road is a steep section through the gorge, principally on Conservation estate, and has presented the most challenges and required the greatest effort to obtain the regulatory approvals, prepare the design and to construct. This paper outlines the history of the challenges faced and how the road was successfully developed.

In a high pressure rolls crusher two force components: the pressurising thrust and the rolling force can be measured experimentally. Computer analyses have revealed regular patterns of stress distribution in the confined material between the rollers. Based on the computer analyses and experimental results a one-dimensional comminution model has been developed.
