Previous studies of alluvial gold in Otago and Southland placer deposits have suggested a gold-mercury association for some deposits derived from Caples Terrane schist, whereas alluvial deposits on Torlesse Terrane basement typically have no mercury. A regional study of gold from Otago Schist vein deposits from both Caples and Torlesse Terranes has revealed the presence of both Au-Ag and Au-Ag-Hg alloys in both terranes. Au-Ag alloy (3 - 4 wt per cent Ag) is typical for gold found in most Torlesse vein deposits, and Au-Ag-Hg alloy (3 - 8 wt per cent Ag, 2 - 8 wt per cent Hg) is found in many Caples vein deposits. Au-Ag-Hg alloys are not exclusive to the Caples Terrane, however, as Au-Ag-Hg alloys with up to 4 wt per cent Hg are found in vein material from the Torlesse-hosted, HydeMacraes Shear Zone. In addition, not all Caples-hosted deposits have a gold-mercury association; gold grains from the Carrick and Invincible gold fields have no detectable mercury. The present study characterises gold compositions from various hard-rock vein deposits and has potential for determining placer-source relationships.

The steeply dipping silver/lead/zinc orebodies at Mount Isa mine have been extracted most recently by a combination of cut-and-fill and open stoping methods. Bench stoping was first used at Mount Isa Mine seven years ago to allow safe extraction of a highly stressed cut-and-fill stope. Subsequent benches have shown that the method offers significant cost and safety benefits through increased productivity and reduction in man exposure. The success of benching has lead to cut-and-fill mining being replaced at Mount Isa.Significant resources have been focussed to optimise benching. This paper describes the operational, planning, and research and development aspects which have contributed to the method to date. A brief look is also taken at the future direction of benching at Mount Isa.

With the recent increase in environmental awareness, gold mining companies are fast becoming signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI, 2007). The objective of the Code is to improve the management of cyanide used in gold mining and to assist in the protection of human health and the reduction of environmental impacts associated with the use of cyanide. In particular the code specifies the following cyanide concentration limits: 50 ppm WAD cyanide in a tailings storage facility, 0.5 ppm WAD cyanide for effluents, and 0.022 ppm free cyanide or 0.022 ppm WAD cyanide as surrogate in the post mixing zone of river discharge. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5, such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Gold plants using cyanide should ideally measure WAD cyanide online and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of the applicable limits to ensure compliance with the Code. Mintek has recently developed an online WAD cyanide analyser (WAD Cynoprobe). The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide bound to metals such as Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand ↔ Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The WAD Cynoprobe measures both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately five minutes, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. The instrument has proven accurate and reliable in the analysis of synthetic copper, nickel and zinc cyanide solutions made up in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. The WAD Cynoprobe has gained widespread commercial acceptance and is currently implemented on nine gold plants around the world.

Whilst the fossil fuel-based power industry moves towards carbon capture and storage (CCS) or so-called 'geosequestration', the minerals industry should adapt to reap the benefits of the new technology. If CCS becomes viable, the door is open to potential key developments in mineral processing. For example, truly continuous steelmaking could at last be realised using natural or manufactured gas combined with generic melt circulation. Iron ore fines would form a thin molten layer moving countercurrent to the gaseous reductant on one side of a melt circulation loop with efficient post-combustion without deleterious effects of slag accumulation on the other. This eliminates oxygen steelmaking because carbon has no access to the circulating molten iron. Steelmaking merely requires addition of the appropriate low level of carbon and in-line impurities removal to meet product specification. Concerning non-ferrous smelting, nothing short of virtually zero gas emission will be acceptable in the future. For dolomite-hosted Zn/Pb sulfide ores, typified by those in the Carpentaria region of Northern Australia, the way forward proposed is sulfur fixation at the mine site employing the highly exothermic reaction of SO2 with dolomite, followed by encapsulation of sulfated dolomite in fused ore slag. This releases enough energy for direct ore smelting to individual metal products. However, without CCS the strategy would be unacceptable because of greenhouse gas emissions. The scheme is advocated for direct ore smelting at McArthur River. As a result, the environmental problems of disposal of flotation tailings are avoided. Also, highly energy intensive ultra-fine grinding is eliminated, as indeed froth flotation itself, with overall very significant energy savings and exceptionally high increases in metals recovery. Zinc and lead recoveries approaching 99 per cent are predicted to be entirely feasible.

The ACARP Landmark initiative has created the opportunity to advance the level of automation in the coal industry by first focusing on the core production area of longwall mining. A Landmark Longwall Automation project was commenced in July 2001. The major outcome of automation using on-face observation has been divided into ten outcome areas that have been fully scoped for a three-year initial project life. A major facilitating technology has been the implementation inertial navigation system (INS) technology that can map the shearer position in 3D. A focus of the project is to deliver a system that is at least as productive as the current most productive manually controlled longwall face.

Five major veining events have been identified within the area surrounding the Mount Whaleback microplaty hematite deposit. These veining events can be directly correlated to the established deformation history of the Hamersley Province (Brown et al, in press). Vein formation temperatures of 203 to 231¦C have been obtained from primary fluid inclusions within veins which formed around the postulated time of ore formation. Preliminary proton induced x-ray emition (PIXE) analysis of these inclusions indicates KCl is the dominant salt species with varying levels of Ca, Fe, Ti, Mn present. It is suggested that some of these veins may have formed from feeder or effluent fluids from microplaty hematite ore formation.

In support of the development of its Liberian iron ore project, ArcelorMittal Mining Research and Development (AM Mining R&D) has performed characterisation and beneficiation test work on drill core samples received from the proposed mine area. In addition to this, a sinter feed product was composed by blending and processing the drill cores in order to predict sintering performance of the ore. This article presents the methodology used to prepare the drill core blend for characterisation, as well as describe the sinter pot trial. As students progress further into a degree, the decision of vocation selection, and even more importantly û securing employment in a particular industry sector, can become quite daunting. However, with a little initiative, students can overcome these issues by not only researching what employment opportunities exist, but by applying for summer vacation employment. Undergraduate vacation employment, especially with a world-leading hydrometallurgy research organisation such as the Parker Centre, can dramatically alter a studentÆs perspective of particular industries and possibly even alter their selection of vocation pursuits upon graduating. Students can also use vacation employment to enhance their networking capabilities, technical skills and knowledge by dealing with challenging new topics such as sulfur dioxide leaching, which is also discussed in this article.

All mining and quarrying operations that employ blasting to fragment and move broken ground have a price to pay for æby-productsÆ such as vibration and noise. These æby-productsÆ cannot be eliminated but they can be controlled and modern blasting techniques have improved to the point that excessive environmental restrictions can be adhered to whilst maintaining acceptable production rates and quality. Accurate measurement is the key to control, and as the environmental limits are becoming tighter, the proper way to measure vibrations from blasting operations becomes an integral part of the mining or quarrying operations. The basic vibration monitoring system consists of a primary sensor connected to a data logger and computer software for the analysis of the signal received and recorded. Currently, as with all fields of measurement, much improvement has occurred over the past decade, and electronic devices are much more accurate and reliable. Data analysis has also improved considerably with the computing power that is available to field operatives today. Mounting the primary sensor has been often overlooked in supposed æstandardsÆ with procedures such as double sided tape, resting on a flat surface provided the vibration level is less than a given amount. But if it is worth going to the expense of the monitoring equipment and manpower, surely it is worth a little extra effort to ensure the primary sensor is coupled to the ground effectively. The primary sensor must move with the ground and measure this movement; so if the primary sensor is allowed to move without respect to the ground (ie poor coupling to the ground) then a false record of the physical event will be measured. This scenario can easily be a practical reality if the primary sensor coupling method to the ground is not effective. In this study a number of mounting methods were fabricated and connected to similar data monitors and a series of ænormalÆ production blasts were used as the vibration source. These mounting devices were measured against an in-house procedure (the æstandardÆ) and the relative merits compared. A laboratory investigation was also carried out to look at the physical parameters of the æsoil and their effect on vibration attenuation of the in-house standard method.

The Xiong’ershan district in the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) contains more than 20 gold deposits hosted in the late Neoarchean to early Palaeoproterozoic amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks or late Palaeoproterozoic unmetamorphosed volcanic rocks. Gold mineralisation consists mainly of auriferous quartz veins and disseminated ores in hydrothermally altered zones, with additional gold mineralised breccia pipes. Gold orebodies are strictly controlled by secondary- or higher-order brittle/ductile-brittle faults. Isotopic dating reveals two separate episodes of gold mineralisation: the Shanggong and Dianfang deposits formed in the range of 236 ± 1.4 to 202 ± 18 Ma, whereas the Gongyu, Qianhe and Qiyugou deposits formed between 135.0 ± 0.5 Ma and 124.0 ± 1.0 Ma. Stable isotope and noble gas geochemistry studies indicate that the Triassic gold deposits were precipitated from deeply-sourced, low-salinity fluids at 250–350°C, but whether the fluids were mainly derived from metamorphic devolatilisation or magmatic degassing remains unresolved. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous deposits most likely precipitated from a dominantly magmatic fluid, although metamorphic and meteoric components cannot be ruled out. Results from this study, when combined with regional geological and geochemical data, suggest that the Triassic gold mineralisation was generated by the deformation associated with the collision between the North China and Yangtze cratons, forming the Qinling-Dabie orogen. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous gold veining was a result of lithospheric destruction of the NCC, a process initiated by plate subduction from both the south and north since late Palaeozoic but ultimately triggered by the westward subduction of the palaeo-Pacific plate in the late Mesozoic. This study helps to reconcile the long-term debate on the timing, genesis and geodynamic setting of gold mineralisation in the Xiong’ershan and other districts along the southern margin of the NCC.CITATION:Li, J-W and Tang, K F, 2015. Western New Zealand can be regarded as a rifted continuation of eastern Australia. Detailed studies of units previously considered to have trans-Tasman correlations are being undertaken within the FRST Programme Mineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZ to test specific connections, and thus add to the exploration framework of NZ. Correlation of two major episodes of granitic magmatism are currently being investigated. These represent the oldest (mid Paleozoic) and youngest (Early Cretaceous) magmatic events that conjoined Australia and New Zealand are believed to have in common.

We report 40Ar/39Ar ages for adularia and illite from veins and wall rocks at the Waihi and Favona deposits, in the Waihi district. One sample of vein adularia from the Favona deposit yielded a plateau age of 6.04 ¦ 0.06 (la) Ma, and two samples of vein adularia from the Waihi deposit yielded plateau ages of 6.17 ¦ 0.03 and 6.17 ¦ 0.09 Ma. Two samples of wall rock adularia from the Waihi deposit yielded plateau ages of 6.07 ¦ 0.06 and 6.08 ¦ 0.03 Ma. Adularia ages overlap at the 2s level, and we do not consider them to be significantly different. Two samples of illite from wall rocks at Favona have total gas ages of 5.66 ¦ 0.04 and 5.65 ¦ 0.04 Ma, and retention ages of 6.57 ¦ 0.04 and 6.61 ¦ 0.04 Ma, whereas one sample of vein illite yielded a total gas age of 5.29 ¦ 0.17 Ma, and a retention age of 6.26 ¦ 0.19 Ma. The total gas ages of illite are minimum ages that are equivalent to conventional K/Ar analyses, whereas retention ages of illite are maximum ages. Although interpretation of the illite data is complicated, the adularia results strongly suggest that the Waihi and Favona deposits formed contemporaneously in the same fossil geothermal system at 6.0 to 6.1 Ma.

The Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s long-planned Western Ring Route, a 48 km north-south motorway alternative to State Highway 1 that bypasses the central city to the west. The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway – half of it underground in tunnels – to connect the Southwestern (State Highway 20) and Northwestern (State Highway 16) motorways.The Western Ring Route will link the major population and industrial centres of Manukau, Auckland and North Shore to give the region the connected and resilient strategic road transport system it needs to underpin economic growth and sustainable development. It will also provide a direct motorway link between Auckland’s central business district (CBD) and international airport.The project involves construction of twin 2.4 km driven tunnels with an outside diameter of 14.41 m beneath residential suburbs, a major arterial road and a rail corridor. Enabling works began in January 2012 while tunnel construction using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) began in November 2013.This presentation introduces the Waterview Connection project, its role in the development of the Auckland motorway network, its procurement process, the alliance delivery model and an overview of the project’s design features and construction progress to date.Design and construction highlights of the presentation include the TBM start-up, turnaround and breakthrough arrangements as well as the experience gained during the first tunnelling drive. Block caving has been the favoured mining method for large underground hard rock mines for the last few decades. The orebody must be of a size large enough to cave and generally amenable to a caving method. Typically, these mines ranged from 15 000 to 50 000 tonnes per day (50 kt/d) and have been some of the largest and most productive underground mines in the world.Now mining companies, in the quest for improved shareholder return, are looking for higher production rates from new underground mines. Whether a ‘Greenfields’ development, or a replacement for ageing large open pit mines, minimising capital and maximising production has been a focus of project teams. These new block cave mines are what have become known as ‘super caves’. These caves range from 80 kt/d to over 150 kt/d and are being planned or constructed by several major mining companies including Codelco, Freeport-McMoRan, Newcrest and Rio Tinto.Issues facing these super caves include high initial capital costs, very long development periods and significant technical challenges. These issues tend to make it difficult to present an attractive business case for such a project.This paper will discuss some of the potential benefits as well as the technical challenges and risks of operating a mine with the block or panel caving method at these very high tonnage rates. Considerations including geotechnical conditions, development rates, panel widths and ore column heights are discussed. Column Bioleaching of a Low-Grade Nickel-Bearing Sulfide Ore Yellow Mountain Deposit belonging to GobiMin Inc is located in the Chinese Tianshan and Altay orogenic belts, Hami, Xinjiang Province, NW China. Indicated Mineral Resources of its reserve are estimated at 12 million tonnes averaging 0.40 per cent nickel. Mineralogical examination and chemical analysis indicated that the Yellow Mountain ore is a type of high Fe, low Mg and low Ni sulfide ore: the main sulfide minerals are ~8.0 per cent pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS), ~1.0 per cent pentlandite ((Fe, Ni)9S8), ~0.6 per cent chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), ~0.5 per cent pyrite (FeS2), and ~0.2 per cent violarite((Fe, Ni)3S4); the main gangue minerals are ~48 per cent olivine, ~28 per cent antigorite, ~3 per cent chlorite, ~2 per cent talc, ~2 per cent tremolite, and~1.5 per cent magnetite; the chemical analysis of the ore sample are Ni 0.40 per cent, Co 0.016 per cent, Cu 0.24 per cent, Fe 12.4 per cent, S 5.6 per cent, MgO 9.6 per cent, CaO 1.80 per cent, SiO2 48.5 per cent and Al2O3 10.3 per cent. Preliminary results of the shake flask test showed that pyrrhotite is easily leached and the high concentration of ferric iron would hamper the growth of bacteria which will bring a negative impact on the bioleaching conversely. This work aims to set up a method to prevent the negative impact of the ferric ion on the bioleaching of the ore. Two method were combined to prevent the negative impact of the ferric ion, they are adaptation of the mixed bacteria to iron ion and bleeding the off-solution periodically to control the levels of iron ion (depending on the tolerance of the microorganisms to the ferric ion) in the leaching solution. Using a mixed mesophiles composed of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans under room temperature, a nickel recovery of 93 per cent and a cobalt recovery of 85 per cent were achieved in 280 days column bioleaching process with an average nickel concentration in the leaching solution of 2.6 g/L. The results showed that the negative effect of the ferric ion can be successfully controlled and the nickel can be bioleached successfully from theYellow Mountain ore.

At Neavesville gold-silver (electrum) mineralisation occurs in steeply-dipping zones of intense fracturing, brecciation and quartz veining within rhyolitic pyroclastics, carbohaceous shales and andesites. Hydrothermal alteration extends over an area of greater than 3 by 1.5 km. In rhyolitic tuffs, highly silicified zones containing quartz-adularia-illite assemblages are flanked by less silicified assemblages composed of albite, illite-montmorillonite and chlorite. The mineralogy and sequence of alteration are comparable with the alteration zones which envelop the steam-producing fissures of the active Wairakei and Broadlands geothermal fields. Primary fluid inclusions in quartz from five fissure veins in the Neavesville field show maximum homogenisation temperatures ranging from 220 - 260¦C and salinities of 0.0 - 1.1 wt per cent NaCl equivalent, which cover a similar range to actual measured temperatures and salinities in geothermal fluids at Wairakei and Broadlands. The age of the rhyolitic pyroclastics and related alteration and mineralisation is probably Pliocene and Neavesville therefore represents a fossil geothermal system. The intensely fractured zones containing the gold-silver mineralisation were probably produced by hydraulic fracturing generated by accumulation under pressure of hydrothermal fluid in blind fault zones. Study of fluid inclusions indicates that hydrothermal quartz associated with electrum was deposited under boiling conditions. High grade electrum mineralisation at Graces workings appears to be localised by reaction of hydrothermal fluid with sedimentary marcasite in black shale.

Detrital gold in the Greymouth-Hokitika area has been won from: (a) gravel of the Pliocene Old Man Group, (b) glacial outwash gravel of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (c) raised shoreline deposits of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (d) deposits resulting from the erosion of (a) to (c). The source of the gold was probably widely dispersed quartz veins in great thicknesses of greywacke and low-grade schist eroded from east of the Alpine Fault, with a contribution from veins in Greenland Group greywacke in the south. At times of high interglacial and post-glacial sea level, gold was concentrated along marine shorelines, and subsequent progressive uplift has resulted in a set of sub-parallel beach leads up to 100 m above present sea level. During glaciations, gold was concentrated in outwash streams close to moraines, especially where ice forming one moraine penetrated and destroyed an older one. Worked deposits in the Old Man Group may also be associated with glaciation. Apart from workings that are essentially extensions of past workings, significant new prospects may depend on inferences as to where prospective deposits are completely obscured by younger ones.

Metals are well suited to sustainable development goals. They are not biodegradable and have virtually an unlimited lifespan and the potential for unlimited recyclability. Thus metals can be considered as renewable materials. However mineral resources, the source of primary metals, are ænon-renewableÆ as their supply is finite, but this does not necessarily mean scarcity. In this paper the results from a series of Life Cycle Assessments of primary metal production processes for copper, nickel, lead, zinc, aluminium and steel have been used to examine how metals may contribute to societyÆs transition to sustainable development. Particular issues considered include:current metal reserves and how these may change in the future; some of the environmental impacts (Total Energy, Global Warming Potential and Acidification Potential) associated with primary metal production and how they will be exacerbated by declining ore grades; new processing technologies with lower energy consumptions and improved metal extraction efficiencies that will reduce reserve depletion and environmental impacts; increasing the utilisation of æmetals in useÆ by recycling, with particular reference to aluminium; and the potential impact of a carbon tax on metal prices and how this may influence the ways in which metals are used in the future.
