Pseudoclastic hydrothermal alteration textures occur within quenched coherent dykes forming part of a subaqueous dome complex (~4 Ma) onPonza Island, Italy. These textures are similar to those observed in considerably older (~500 Ma) subaqueous volcanic rocks at a number of localities throughout the Mount Read Volcanics in Tasmania and elsewhere in ancient volcanic sequences of this type in Australia. This is significant because the processes of formation, hydrothermal alteration and secondary mineralisation of ancient volcanic sequences may be better understood if we can make comparisons with modern analogues. Observations at Ponza imply that these pseudoclastic alteration features form synvolcanically or immediately after dyke emplacement and lava extrusion. This is compatible with scenarios presented for their formation in ancient sequences in the Mount Read Volcanics, Tasmania.

Mother Nature controls, technical professionals model and miners decide. Decisions to explore, mine and mill. Mine decisions, mine design, planning and scheduling are subject to the quality of models û geological models, geotechnical models, resource models, density models. The closer these models are to reality, the more accurate the predicted outcome. So why is it we delegate the modelling tasks to the most junior and least experienced people? If we insist on this, we need to support them û to provide them with æexperience acceleratorsÆ. Technical mentoring is the most effective way to provide the right information at the right time. When this information (read skills) is supplied at the right time we can inject experience into the quality of our modelling and into our decision- making processes. The objective of this paper is to share those behaviours and manners that foster relationships and create frameworks for skills and experience transfer. Central to this is an understanding of how adults learn, an understanding of the basic rules of mentoring etiquette, and the three keys to building meaningful mentoring relationships. An understanding of adult learning processes and styles provides a structure within which a mentor can understand the learnerÆs perspective. Understanding the world from the learnerÆs point is critical to selecting the right language to engage, teach and transfer skills. Basic rules of mentoring etiquette like timeliness, respect and trust need to be brought into the consciousness so they can be agreed on and monitored to prevent conflicts in cultural and generational norms between the mentor and the learner.Meaningful relationships hinge on the three behaviours: truly listening, rather than just hearing; understanding the technical issues within the WIIFM (whatÆs in it for me?) question; and facilitative behaviour. Stronger and more meaningful technical mentoring relationships within our industry will bridge the generational gap and ensure we can capture and capitalise on the wealth of grey hair experience and develop an informed group of young decision-makers.

The Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) is low angle, duplex thrust system that has developed in a graphitic pelite schist within the Otago schist belt, New Zealand . At Round Hill lateral ramps have developed parallel to the movement direction between+ the footwall and hangingwall shears. These structures exhibit normal oblique-slip displacement which has been an important mechanism for creating space in an otherwise compressional system. Gold-bearing quartz veins were emplaced along the boundary shears and lateral ramps during thrusting. Gold within the lateral ramps is coarse (up to 300 microns) however hanging wall cataclasite development in the boundary shears after the gold was deposited has reduced the grainzise of most of the gold to less than one micron. This bimodal gold distribution has metallurgical implications with respect to the maximisation of gold recovery at Macraes.

The ability to design a beneficiation process for a new orebody based on particular feed characteristics is a powerful and practical tool. A new technique has been developed where beneficiation outcomes can be calculated by combining feed size-by-size chemical analysis, mineralogy, liberation and particle characteristics with a series of simple theoretical unit separation models rather than a simple mass balance approach or an exhaustive beneficiation test program. The new technique provides the ability to rapidly identify ore types that have the potential to meet product specifications whilst also rejecting others that will not meet specification even if a perfect separation was achieved. Beyond the broad scale decision making process, practical mineral separation curves from actual plant data can be used to more closely simulate the proposed process. This approach reduces the amount of laboratory and pilot plant work necessary by targeting what process stages will be required, increases early rejection of uneconomic options, identifies problematic ore types or unit operations and is a step towards estimation of final grade and recoveries achievable in potential circuit configurations.

Due to the steep geo-thermal gradient in Bowen Basin area, as underground coalmines reach increased depths of extraction, the Bulk Air Cooling (BAC) requirements will increase as opposed to cooling the workplace using the ventilation means alone. One such mine has already been using a 4 MW surface BAC plant for the last six years to manage the working temperatures with reduced cooling efficiency as the mine expands. Due to the horizontal nature of the longwall mine layout, distances from the working face to intake shafts are rapidly expanding to over 6 km as opposed to the vertical mine layout of a hard rock mine. To improve the positional cooling efficiency, reduced panel pressure differentials, improved rib emission gas management, and intake dust management, small diameter intake shafts were located on the inbye end of production panels and halfway up the development panels with localised mobile small BAC plants. This paper summarises the results of extensive underground data of this innovative cooling concept for development and retreating longwall face heat management compared to a larger remote BAC plant.CITATION:Belle, B, Brouwer, D and Wild, P, 2017. The optimisation of a mining operation requires precise ore grade control, metallurgical accounting, and laboratory sampling protocols, which are implemented by using accurate and flawless sampling systems. Good sampling practices, and sampling technologies in these fields have been historically poor and too many existing sampling systems available on the market are flawed in many ways. This is mainly the result of a poor understanding of the Sampling Theory, and the natural result of international standards on sampling that fail to present the Sampling Theory in a logical way, that still promote non-probabilistic sampling, and that fail to address the important details that make a correct sampling system. Many standards barely mention the Sampling Theory in appendices when it should be clearly the main body of a reliable standard on sampling. As a result, many standards show only little expertise in the Sampling Theory. Conventional statistics should only be a scientific tool for the Sampling Theory to reach its height, which has always been well understood by its creators. Conventional statistics can indeed be addressed in appendices of standards in sampling, but not the other way around. Until the Sampling Theory is recognised as the main body of a standard on sampling, incorrect sampling technologies will plague the market, and make it impossible for mining operations to optimise their mining and metallurgical processes. This paper makes a short list of correct new sampling technologies that have been created with respect to the principles taught in the Sampling Theory. Also, suggestions are presented to create better international standards on sampling, which would provide a stronger incentive for manufacturers to build correct sampling systems, and for engineering firms to install only sampling systems that respect the rules of sampling correctness listed in the Sampling Theory.

A calibration of the Frantz isodynamic magnetic separator relates the current in the electromagnet and the transverse slope of the chute to the specific susceptibility at which separation is being effected. In addition to providing a rapid measure of the specific susceptibility of minerals and composite grains, the calibration provides a guide to operation of the Frantz isodynamic separator for mineral separation, and to the nature of composite grains. The most sensitive magnetic separation is obtained by using the highest practicable current and transverse slope, and the lowest practicable longitudinal slope.INTRODUCTIONProbably all minerals have a magnetic susceptibility measurable by sensitive techniques. However, magnetic separation between minerals which have low but different specific susceptibilities, and which for many purposes are considered essentially non-magnetic, has only become practicable with the development of the Frantz isodynamic separator.The construction and principle of this highly sensitive separator has been described by S. G. Frantz as an appendix to a description by 'Gaudin and Spedden (1943) of its application to the separation of sulphides constituting mill products.Various publications (e.g. Hess, 1949, Hutton, 1952) refer to its use in separating the mineral constituents of rocks, ores, and unconsolidated sands.As used in this study the Frantz isodynamic separator consists of a vibrating chute mounted centrally between the pole pieces of an electromagnet (Fig. 1). This unit may be inclined in any direction by the universal mounting, and the electromagnet current is continuously adjustable from 0 to 1·5 amperes.

The Mesozoic iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) mineralisation in southern Perú and the northern Chile coastal IOCG belt have emerged as two of the major exploration targets in the Central Andes in the last two decades. These Mesozoic Andean IOCG deposits formed in two mineralisation epochs, the Middle-Late Jurassic (170–150 Ma) and Early Cretaceous (130–110 Ma), with the major Cu-rich IOCG deposits located in the Early Cretaceous mineralisation belt. The early studies in some IOCG centres support a magmtic-hydrothermal model for both Cu-rich IOCG deposits and broadly contemporaneous Cu-poor ‘Kiruna-type’ magnetite deposits. However, recent evidence from field, geochronology, fluid inclusions and stable isotopes show that in the major Central Andean deposits (eg Raúl-Condestable, Mina Justa in southern Perú, La Candelaria-Punta del Cobre and Mantoverde in northern Chile), the incursion of evaporite-sourced basinal brines or sea water may be a prerequisite for economic Cu mineralisation. Moreover, the Cu-poor massive magnetite deposits could be interpreted as a product from iron oxide melt, with minimal intervention by non-magmatic fluids. Therefore, they could represent two contrasted deposit types and contain little genetic relationships. The different roles of magmatism during the Mesozoic are responsible for the variable mineralisation in the Central Andes, including IOCG, magnetite and ‘manto-type’ deposits. Much of the coal and gold mining industry of New Zealand is small scale. Funding is tight and mechanisation limited. The country has many well documented small coalfields (some with significant outcropping) and alluvial gold deposits. These are generally remote, difficult to access (physically and otherwise) and of submarginal value (largely a consequence of size when viewed for extraction by traditional techniques). The industry is also burdened by environmental and bureaucratic constraints. The above over simplified setting suggests to the Author, a newcomer to New Zealand, the opportunity to consider some novel concepts based on technology and techniques developed overseas or borrowed from other industry sectors. The objective being to make viable in economic and environmental terms projects that might otherwise be stillborn if considered for exploitation by conventional means. The paper mainly discusses 2 concepts focusing on the application of augers for exposed high wall or outcrop coal and micro-tunnelling augers for alluvial gold extraction. These may be considered high mobility 'container' (as in shipping container) packaged, or 'non invasive' mining systems. It is stressed that these are but concepts and have yet to be subjected to rigorous financial or engineering scrutiny. This could only follow their acceptance by, and input from, New Zealand miners. There will also be brief mention of a new modular conveyor system which might have application within the concepts or existing small scale mineral extraction operations and mention of a project currently in progress to apply tangible 'sustainability' to underground coal mining.

Water rights and availability are extremely contentious issues in many mining regions around the world, in some instances leading to violent confrontation. This situation has the potential to only get worse because competition for 'scarce' water resources will increase with population growth. In this environment the dilemma facing the mining industry is how to generate confidence in developing a responsible, sustainable and transparent water management strategy that is recognised as such by all stakeholders. Whilst the water needs of the mining industry are minor compared to those of agriculture, an operating mine requires a relatively large quantity of water on a daily basis to carry out operations. Another contentious aspects of new mine development is the debate between all stakeholders on the amount and quality of water that a mine is able to discharge into the environment should this be required. There are a multitude of water resources available to the mining industry for operational needs however much of this water is saline and over the last two decades there has been a continual decline in water quality (ie salinity has increased). In today's world there are enormous internal and external pressures to reduce water consumption at a mine and/or alternatively use water not considered a resource by the local community (ie sewage, saline or salt water, desalinated water). Strategies to meet these objectives can be achieved by implementing good water management practices, by recycling process water, reducing water losses by evaporation and seepage (ie by increasing and improving dewatering practices) and employing new technologies such as dry stacking and dry processing. Recycled water, acid mine drainage water and water collected in the mining area have the potential to impact mineral processing performance, unless they are treated, because of the build up of mineral salts and decomposed chemical products in these types of waters. Besides this the regulatory requirements of any water discharged from a mine site (quantity and quality) have also become more stringent. For these reasons there is now some form of water treatment practiced at most mining operations around the world. This paper provides an overview of water stewardship undertaken in the mining industry over the last two decades and provides examples of water treatment practices that have recently been installed at mining operations that may be of interest to the reader.

Incorrect sampling and measurement operations and misunderstanding the components of variability can cause huge economic losses to the mining industry. The main objective of this paper is to illustrate by means of four historical facts how Codelco has been evolving in those issues since the late 1980s. The El Abra bias, the awareness of the different kind of sampling errors and the role of Francis Pitard, the awareness of weighting errors, and the understanding of the components of nature and process variability are described. It has been a slow but a consistent process. Much progress has been achieved but still there are many opportunities for improvement to transit from the tonnage culture to the productivity culture.

Oceana Gold (NZ) LtdÆs, Macraes Gold Operation currently has two tailings impoundments, the larger of which covers approximately 75 ha. When an impoundment is temporarily out of use, the surface dries and dust can be blown from the surface to the surrounding area. At present water spraying is used to stabilise the surface, but this is not ideal as Macraes mine can experience water shortages during the summer. This paper examines an alternative method of surface stabilisation using vegetation as a ground cover. The tailings have a low natural fertility, so it is important to determine what will actually grow in the tailings, and whether amendments are necessary. Also important is the effect of the amendments on arsenic mobility in the tailings as the schist rock at Macraes has naturally elevated levels of arsenic. Three plants species, rye corn, barley, and lupin, were grown in metre-deep lysimeters at Macraes mine site. The plants were grown in unaltered tailings, and tailings with one of two amendments added: Bioboost (an organic fertiliser containing biosolids), and superphosphate fertiliser. The leachate from each lysimeter was collected and analysed monthly to determine the extent of arsenic mobility. In addition, laboratory experiments were set up to determine arsenic mobility in tailings with amendments at the centimetre scale.   All plants grew best with the fertiliser amendment, with rye corn growing the best overall. Plants growing in unaltered tailings either barely survived (rye corn, barley) or died (lupin). Plants in the Bioboost amended tailings grew only slightly better than in the unamended tailings. Laboratory experiments indicate that the addition of phosphate fertiliser greatly increases arsenic leaching at the centimetre scale when compared to unamended tailings. The addition of Bioboost only marginally increases arsenic leaching, compared to unamended tailings. This trend has not been repeated in the lysimeter trials on the metre scale over four months. Current results suggest that of the plant types trialed and amendments used, rye corn with superphosphate is the most practical short-term tailings stabilisation method at Macraes.

Optical sensors have emerged during the telecom boom in the late 1900s, due to the availability to low-cost telecom-grade optical components. It's only after the telecom industry's fall in 2004 that optical sensors became sufficiently developed to be a viable technology for real-world applications. Geotechnical applications have long relied on electrical sensors such as thermocouples, strain, and the venerable vibrating wire to measure physical phenomena. Although these are well suited for a large variety of applications, electrical sensors cannot be used for all applications: these are vulnerable to noise, hazardous voltages and corrosion, limiting the environments in which they can be used. In addition, electrical wires can also become an issue when sensors require external excitation or are distant from the measurement system. Finally, changes in physical properties of electrical sensors and systems over time makes regular calibration a necessity - not easy to do when these are permanently mounted on structures. Optical sensing systems are non-conducting and use light to perform various measurements. There are several optical sensor technologies available, each with different strengths and weaknesses. In addition, there are different methods of interrogating optical sensors, each of which also present different strengths and weaknesses. To make matters worse, configuring the interrogation and scaling to physical units can also be challenging to the unprepared engineer. This paper will present a holistic view of optical sensing, presenting the different optical sensor technologies and interrogation techniques. Sample optical sensing systems will be revealed and top considerations for optical sensing will be presented.

There is currently a worldwide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow characteristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for determining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0.0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦C - 319¦C. Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physicochemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage. Apparent viscosity increased sharply with increase in solids concentration and suspensions at higher concentration behaved as non Newtonian liquids. Viscosity decreased with increase in temperature; rate of decrease slowed down with increase in temperature.

An integrated mine system must be capable of displaying and reporting valuable information that can be used to easily understand, manage and take action on the key parameters being reported.One of the key aspects of integration is the standardisation of the mine information up to a level capable of adapting the main characteristics of past projects at the mine and enforcing the same or higher standards for newer projects being developed.At the El Teniente mine, photogrammetry is used to map the advance of horizontal developments, and the constructed 3D representation of each face is then used by the geologists to obtain structural information about the areas being photographed.The mine realised that valuable mining information could also be extracted from the photogrammetry being applied, with three possible areas of development envisioned.The first area was creating a link between the developments being planned on a yearly and monthly basis and matching them with plan sections of the 3D developments of the system to account for any deviations.The second area was to use vertical sections of the 3D developments to estimate the overbreak of the excavations in different areas of the mine.The third area was the provision of a more detailed analysis of the sections so that they could provide information on the thickness of the shotcrete being applied.This paper presents the different alternatives being used and examines how the project is currently being developed and managed at the mine. In order to increase productivity and decrease reducing agent rate (RAR) of blast furnaces, slag content of sinter ore must be decreased. However, gangue content in iron ore tends to increase because of resource depletion. Therefore, amount of high-grade concentrate in sinter ore feeds should be increased, but this situation causes a decrease in permeability of the sintering bed so that the productivity of sinter process decreases. In order to increase the amount of concentrate, NSSMS has developed the P-type separate granulation method, RF-MEBIOS and SPEx II technologies. These technologies have been introduced to actual sintering machines. In this report, a new technology using microparticles of iron ore is proposed to increase the amount of concentrate in sinter blends. Basic experiments simulating the sinter making process using microparticles of iron ore were undertaken. Crushed pisolite, containing >60 wt per cent -10 µm was prepared for binder. The pisolite microparticle binder was mixed with another Australian sinter feed ore in a high-speed agitating mixer. They were mixed for about one minute, and then granulated using a pan pelletiser. After that, they were added to another raw material mixed by a drum mixer, and then charged in a pot for a sinter pot test. As a result, when the amount of concentrate increased from 13 wt per cent to 20 wt per cent, productivity was almost kept constant using pisolite microparticle binder.CITATION:Kamijo, C, Yamaguchi, Y, Matsumura, M, Kawaguchi, T and Nomura, S, 2017. A survey has been undertaken of the petrography of North Island greywackes with a particular focus on the occurrence in them of smectite (swelling clay) and chlorite, two minerals that are closely associated, chemically similar, and commonly interlayered with each other. Smectite is the mineral which is a major cause of greywacke aggregatesÆ poor performance. Smectite occurs in post-metamorphic shear zones and in surface weathering profiles over greywackes. This study focuses on the petrography of fresh greywacke rocks.   The occurrence and abundance of smectite and chlorite and their relationship in greywackes is largely a function of the chemistry of the sediment and the maximum temperature that the sediment has been subjected to during diagenesis and/or very low grade (anchizone) metamorphism. Rock chemistry, particularly total iron and MgO, determines the smectite and/or chlorite content in fine-grained greywackes (argillites and siltstones) but chemistry is less influential in sandstones, where at low grades of metamorphism much of the Fe and Mg of the rock is held in unreacted detrital minerals and the mineral constituents of lithic grains.   Four zones which represent different levels of diagenesis and very low grade metamorphism, based on the crystallinity of illite and chlorite in the greywackes, and the proportion of smectite interlayered with chlorite, have been mapped in the North Island. In the anchizone smectite does not appear as a discrete mineral, it is always interlayered with chlorite. In the upper anchizone chlorite contains approximately ten per cent of smectite interlayered with chlorite. In the lower anchizone about 30 per cent smectite can occur in chlorite.   In addition to the smectite and chlorite inherent in the greywackes as the result of the thermal overprint, smectite as a discrete mineral and smectite-chlorite interlayered minerals with high levels of smectite, occur in abundance on shear zone surfaces and in alteration zones adjacent to shear zones; these are the main contributers to the high levels of smectite recorded in many greywacke aggregates.
