The iron-mines of the Ilsede Hutte Co. are at a town called Peine, about 20 miles east of the city of Hanover, on the railroad to Brunswick (Braunschweig). Hanover, the capital of the province, is a military city, of approximately 250,000 inhabitants, and Brunswick, 33 miles to the westward, has half this number. The mines here described are located in a hamlet called Bulten. The Ilsede Hutte Co. operates two mines, 1.5 miles apart, in this district, Gruber Bulten Adenstadt and Gruber Lengede Bodenstadt. It also operates an iron-mine north of Hanover, known as Eiserhaven, and one in the Harz mountains, the Georg Friedrich, at Grauhof. At Bulten a coarse conglomerate, a, Figs. 1 and 2, contains nodules of limonite, cemented together by calcium phosphate. The ore contains Fe, 25 to 45; Mn, 3 to 4; P, 0.6 to 1.4; '5, 0.02 to 0.09; and CaCO,, 40 per cent. Directly above the conglomerate is limestone, 6, followed by a mixture of clay and sand, c. Below the conglomerate is a hard clay floor, d. The ore-body, from 10 to 12 km. long, and from 3 to 4 km. wide, has a maximum thickness of 20 m. It dips approximately 10" S.E., and strikes K 45° E. Diamond-drill prospecting shows that the thickness diminishes to 1 m. as the end of the deposit is approached to the northward. At this point the deposit is 250 m. below the surface. In Fig. 2, the arrow, A, indicates the general direction of the work along the face, a, which is carried forward in a straight line for its entire length. At B, a train is approaching, which has come from the bench-track, shown at C, by a circuitous route, and is dumping the overburden behind the face, in the space left by the excavated rock. "Power is transmitted to Butte, a distance of 130 miles, over two separate lines running parallel on the same right of way.The transmission line embodies the most approved ideas in construction. The conductors are No. O. B. & S. gauge, hard drawn copper strand. The insulators are of the suspension type, each insulator consisting of six units, 10 inches in diameter. The insulators will stand a wet test of over 300,000 volts, and were selected after long and careful tests by the company's engineers. The wires are carried on steel towers of four-legged, single crossarm type, manufactured by Milliken Bros. The three conductors are suspended in a horizontal row from the crossarm, and there are no transpositions in either line. Above the power wires and symmetrically located are two galvanized steel strands, Vs-inch in diameter, grounded at each tower, which serve as a protection against lightning.The distance between towers in level country is 600 feet. In mountainous country, however, the spans are irregular in length and spans of 1,500 or 2,000 feet are common. The longest one in the line is that crossing- the Missouri River and is equal to 3,034 feet. The length of this span is such that a person standing at one end of it can sec the wires go off and vanish into space, while the tower at the other end is barely visible to the naked eye on a clear day. Little drilling has been done in Kentucky and Tennessee in 1923, with the exception of the Kettle Creek area on the Kentucky-Tennessee line. Oil prices fluctuated between $2.86 and $1.36 Per bbl. for light oil. The Kentucky production was slightly over 8,000,000 bbl., being 1,000,000 bbl. less than during 1922. Tennessee production was approximately 8500 bbl., being a decrease of 1000 bbl, over. 1922. During 1923, the first producing well was brought in, in Clay County, Tenn. Production in Tennessee will undoubtedly increase considerably in 1924, and Kentucky production will probably increase slightly. THE year 1923 has been a dull period in oil development in Kentucky and Tennessee, with the exception of the Kettle Creek area along the Tennessee-Kentucky line, in Clinton and Cumberland Counties, Kentucky, and Clay County, Tennessee. The price of oil during the year has been so low that wildcatters have shown little interest in drilling. At the beginning of the year, light oil sold for $2.31 per barrel and medium oil for $2.06 per, barrel. Prices increased to the highest point for the year in February, when light oil brought $2.86 per barrel and medium oil, $2.61. In April, prices had declined 35 c. while in May an additional decline of 25 c. went into effect. During June, prices declined 20 c. per barrel; during July, 45 c. per barrel; remained stationary during August and September, and dropped during November and December to the low price of $1.36 per barrel for light and $1.21 for medium oil. At present, an increase of 29 c. has brought the price of light oil up to $1.55, and indications are that the price will continue to increase during the coming months. It can readily be seen that during 1923 the price of oil was such as to prevent any drilling except that necessary to hold leases and to maintain production enough to take care of overhead expenses.

IN order to determine the magnitude of thermal conductivity changes resulting from alloying vanadium with titanium and a few other elements, several sam~les were PrePared and measured. The thermal conductivity -values reported herein in Table I were determined with an apparatus previously described.' As in recently reported2 determinations on uranium and uranium alloys, whose thermal conductivities are in the same range as vanadium," the accuracy of the values was checked by using synthetic sapphire." The error in the measurement is estimated to be '-3 pct or 0.003 cal sec-1 cm-l "C-1, whichever is larger. The vanadium used in preparing the samples was the calcium-reduced type and was supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. as 99.6+ pct pure. All alloying elements used in the preparations were 99+ pct pure. A nonconsumable tungsten electrode arc furnace was used for melting the alloys and, without opening the furnace, each ingot was re-melted a number of times to insure homogeneity. The samples as prepared by the Armour Research Foundation were machined from as forged material without annealing. Acknowledgment The note is based on work performed under the auspices of the AEC. IN THE light of the experimental data on equilibrium for the reaction C + FeO = Fe + CO in molten steel recently obtained by Kinzel and I Egan,1 it is necessary to revise current theories regarding the nature of equilibrium between carbon and FeO in the basic open-hearth furnace. According to the measurements of these investigators the equilibrium constant m for the above reaction for a pressure of dissolved CO equal to 1 atm. is equal to 0.0005 at 1550° C., when concentrations of carbon and. FeO are expressed in percentages by weight. Their work also shows that, with the pressure of CO fixed at 1 atm., not only is the product of carbon and FeO constant, but carbon and FeO are each independently constant-a circumstance which might have been predicted from theoretical considerations. At 1550° C., carbon is constant at about 0.025 per cent. and FeO at about 0.020 per cent., with the pressure of dissolved -CO equal to 1 atm., the product of these two constants being equal to the originally mentioned constant of 0.0005. Available data on the dissolved FeO content of samples taken from the metal bath at practical slag-metal equilibrium prove that this FeO content is determined solely by temperature and the effective FeO content of the slag. The distribution constant r at 1550° C., as determined by Herty, Gaines, Larsen, Simkins, Geruso and Watkins2 is equal to 0.0086. A slag would have to contain 0.020/0.0086 = 2.3 per cent. effective FeO or less in order to prevent the metal from containing more dissolved FeO than that required for equilibrium with CO at 1 atm. pressure. Michigan produced 16,637,000 bbl. in 1937. This makes it a record year in the history of Michigan's oil industry. During the year 953 wells were completed; 779 within the limits of established fields and 174 wildcats; 616 new oil wells, 68 gas wells and 269 dry holes. Table 1 has been arranged in alphabetical order of field names. Production figures for 1936 have been corrected because December figures were estimated. In this year's summary, December production is based on actual reports. The Leaton and Mt. Pleasant fields have been re-defined. Mt. Pleasant production north of the south line of Denver township, Isabella County, has been included with Leaton in accordance with usual practice in Michigan. The locations of fields discovered since the last map was published1 are shown in Fig. 1. Activity during 1937 Buckeye Field.—The Buckeye field of Gladwin County was the center of greatest activity during the year and was responsible for the increase of 4,700,000 bbl. over the state total for 1936. Buckeye produced 6,428,-000 bbl. in 1937. In this field 328 producing wells were completed during the year—over one-half the oil producers drilled in the state. Buckeye was subject to voluntary and cooperative proration from April 1 to the end of the year. Other pools of the state were not prorated. The new production at Buckeye is from porous Dundee limestone of Devonian age, similar to the older fields. Other New Fields.—The Sherman field was second in importance as a source of new production, with a total of 1,532,000 bbl. Salem township, Allegan County, on the southwest side of the Michigan Basin, was developed during the year. Production at Salem is from the Traverse limestone at a depth of 1600 ft., and 52 producing wells have been drilled in this pool. Other active pools were Clayton and Adams townships, Arenac County. The total crude oil production of these islands, which in 1928 amounted to nearly 5,000,000 metric tons—about 36,500,000 bb1.—has again increased in 1929. This production, as far as the Dutch Islands are concerned, is owned partly by the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij, the producing subsidiary of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Concern, and partly by the Kolon-isle Petroleum Maatschappij (Standard Oil Co. of N. J.), while that of the British Protectorate Sarawak belongs to the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co., Ltd., of London. The increase in 1929 is due partly to more intensive drilling; the rotary system, which enables drilling to be done more quickly and to greater depths than was possible with the percussion system, has come into more general use. Further, considerable extensions have been made to some of the existing fields and several new pools have been discovered, which contributed in no small degree to the increase in production. Of particular interest is the fact that the ('Niam" (Nederlandsche Indische Aardolie Maatschappij), in which the Dutch Government has a large share and which company in 1928 was producing from only two fields in South Sumatra, has discovered a pool in North Sumatra and, moreover, has struck oil on the island of Poeloe Boenjoe near Tarakan (Eastern Borneo). The deepest well still drilling is in one of the fields of the "Niam" and has reached a depth of 2269 meters (7445 feet). Notwithstanding the tropical c1imate and the dense jungle in which most of the fields are situated, the most modern scientific methods are applied in exploration, in drilling, producing and refining.

One of the special uses to which the electric furnace has been put recently is the melting of an alloy of nickel and cast iron for the production of electrical-resistance grids. The metal sections of these grids, Fig. 1, are quite uniform for each pattern, but there is, among the various patterns, a variety of thicknesses. The cross-sections vary from 1/2 by 3/16 in. to as small as 1/8 by 1/8 in. The electrical resistance of a perfect casting lies within 10 per cent. above or below the fixed listed resistance for each pattern. Good molding is essential to success in the making of these grids, for with absolutely correct metal, a variation of 0.01 in. in width and thickness of section on some of the patterns may mean as much as 12 or 14 per cent. variation in resistance. The service for which these castings are intended demands that the metal, even in the smallest castings, be very soft, showing an open, gray, highly graphitic structure, in order that they may be resistant to shock, and stand up well under rough usage. The metal used for this purpose is a gray iron alloyed with 4 to 5 per cent. of nickel, which element, when the composition of the alloy is correct, imparts toughness and pliability to the metal and helps to overcome the tendency of metal to run white and become brittle because of the rapid cooling action of the sand mold. When cold, these castings can be twisted into various shapes, taking a permanent set without breaking. The alloy has approximately double the e1etrical resistance of ordinary cast iron. In 1034 the Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama began an investigation of the availability of kyanite ores as a source of raw material for the manufacture of refractories. Under this program, gravity concentration and flotation tests have been made on two varieties of Georgia kyariite ore, mica schist and massive. Most of the attention has been directed to the mica schist ores, as they are more widely distributed and seem to offer greater economic possibilities than the massive ores. It is evident that the preparation of kyanite for use as a refractory material involves other considerations than the mere elimination of impurities. A concentration process that eliminates impurities satisfactorily may have to be followed by some additional treatment, since the final product must be of a coarseness and size ratio that will make it suitable for refractories manufacture. So far in the investigation at the Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines only the concentration problem has been considered, and this paper is intended as an interim report. Ores The schist ores contain 1 to 9 per cent of kyanite crystals embedded in mica and quartz, with smaller amounts of graphite, garnet and iron oxide and minor amounts of other heavy minerals. The garnet content varies from a trace to a few per cent. The minerals are easily released by moderate grinding. The size of the kyanite ranges from fine needles to crystals 1 1/2 in. long, 1/2 in. wide and 1/4 in. thick. The garnet, quartz and iron oxide grains have a smaller mean mesh than most of the kyanite. The maximum size of the garnet crystals corresponds to about 14 mesh and that of the sand grains is considerably less. Most of the iron oxide is still finer, for the minus 100-mesh size is greatly enriched in Fe²O3. The massive ore consists of radiating masses of kyanite interlocked with quartz, mica, corundum and small amounts of other heavy minerals.

The thermodynamic activities of zinc in six solid solution Cu-Zn alloys ranging from 5 to 35 at. pct Zn were determined experimentally in the temperature range 400° to 600°C. This low temperature investigation was canducted in order to evaluate techniques developed to utilize the inherently high sensitivity of atomic absorption flocesses in the measurement of thermodynamic activities. Analytical expressions ,for the activity and actizlity coeflcient are given for the six alloys in the temperature ranges investigated. RELATIVELY few experimental methods are available for investigation of thermodynamic activities of alloys, especially in the solid state. The techniques most frequently used have been the electrochemical potential and the effusion methods, both of which have severe limitations in many instances. It is therefore desirable to expand the ability to perform such measurements in order to obtain new information as well as to provide an additional independent verification capability. In this work, we present a significant improvement in the spectrophotometric method for sensing small vapor pressures in static absorption cells. Similar techniques have been used previously;1"5 however, applications had been limited to relatively high pressures, often greater than 1 torr. Prior investigators have, for the most part, used broad spectral sources such as xenon or mercury lamps, and high intensity arcs. Hollow cathode sources were first suggested in 1956 6 and were used soon afterwards.4'5 These sources offer significant improvements in sensitivity and freedom from interfering spectral lines.'-' EXPERIMENTAL High purity zinc was obtained from Cominco Products, Inc., and copper from American Smelting and Refining Co. Both elements were of 99.999 pct purity. Copper-zinc alloys were vacuum melted in a high fired carbon crucible with each alloy pulled from the melt as a 4 -in. diam bar. The bars were swaged to -1/4 in. rods and vacuum annealed for 160 hr at 800° + 1°C. Samples for gross chemical analysis were taken at intervals along the length of the rods to ascertain the axial zinc gradient. Electron microprobe analysis of homogenized specimens indicated that the alloys had uniform compositions over their cross sections on a macro (200 p) and micro (1 u) scale to better than *1 pct (20) of the gross composition. This tolerance was determined by counting statistics, rather than assured composition fluctuations. All SiO 2 windows were high-ultraviolet-transmission grade to minimize intensity losses. Silica absorption cells were scrupulously cleaned consecutively in organic solvents, dilute HF, and distilled water before use. The empty cells were then flamed while under a dynamic vacuum, cooled, and removed to an argon-filled glove bag. Alloy pieces were cut and filed in the glove bag to produce fresh surfaces, and then loaded into the cells. The loaded cells were temporarily sealed, removed from the glove bag, reevacuated to 10-5 torr or better, and permanently sealed. The instrument used is schematically shown in Fig. 1. The spectral emission from a commercially made hollow cathode lamp (A) of a selected element is focused through an absorption cell (B) inside a well-controlled furnace (C). The intensity of the transmitted beam is measured using the spectrometer* (D) 'Techtron model AA4 atomic absorption spectrometer. which contains a grating (E) that disperses the light prior to impingement on the photomultiplier (F). The monochromator grating is adjusted so that only the wavelength of interest is measured. The power supply delivered an interrupted voltage to the lamp, causing a chopped radiation output to be transmitted. The detector read only the intermittent component of radiation incident upon it, so that all continuous noise signals (furnace radiation, and so forth) were eliminated. Three recording thermocouples contained in the muffle furnace were positioned along the length of the absorption cell: one at each end and one at the center. An effort was made to keep the ends of the cell several degrees hotter than the center to avoid window condensate. Appropriate thermal corrections were then necessary to relate cell pressure to radiation attenuation. Water-cooled heat shields, as shown in Fig. 1, were found to aid signal stability by protecting the hollow cathode and the photomultiplier from furnace radiation. The furnace had a 2-in. diam muffle, Kan-thal wound, with SiO 2 windows at its ends to minimize convective effects. The hollow cathode radiation was masked and focused to form a conic beam that was a maximum of { in. diam within the furnace. Thus, the 1.5 in. diam absorption cell easily contained the entire beam. The furnace was mounted on ball-bearing slides with positive positioning detents. This arrangement allowed the removal of the entire furnace assembly from the radiation path, position [I], Fig. 1, so that frequent sampling of the unattenuated beam intensity could be obtained. In all cases the beam intensity was kept constant to 0.1 pct as judged by readings taken immediately before and immediately after data collection. Only data for absorptions of less than 80 pct were utilized, as systematic deviations from linearity were found for greater absorptions.

DURING 1950 the jet-piercing process was used commercially in the piercing of primary blast- holes in magnetic taconite at the preliminary taconite plant of the Erie Mining Co., Aurora, Minn. The Erie Mining Co. purchased a jet-piercing ma- chine and associated equipment in 1949, and the machine has been in operation since its installation in the summer of that year. An overall view of the pit with the JPM-1 jet-piercing machine in operation is shown in Fig. 1.

AT this time of the year, engineering schools are releasing a group of young men who probably are, on the average, in much the same attitude of mind as a person arriving at the terminal station of a railway journey; namely, of having a general idea of his objective, but having to make a decision as to just where he is going and how best to get there. The man leaving the train can at first follow the crowd, but it soon breaks up, as one goes one way and one another, until he has to choose his own course. The recent graduate may do the equivalent of following the crowd by accepting the first position offered, but this only postpones a decision as to where he is going and how best to get there. So many young engineers ask for advice as to what to do that the following statement has been prepared as an attempt to make a general answer to such queries. The engineer taking his first job should realize two fundamental relations. The first is that in electing to be an engineer he has elected to be a hired man. A consulting engineer has more freedom than a man on a regular pay roll, but he is also a hired man; hired for briefer periods at a relatively high rate, but under the necessity of simultaneously doing his consulting work and developing new retainers. There is nothing derogatory in being a hired man (all doctors, lawyers and clergymen are hired men), but the tardy realization that he is one seems to give many an engineer a mental jolt that can be avoided if he accepts it from the beginning.

Uniquely colored, thin-bedded quartzite is quarried between Crossville and Crab Orchard in Cumberland County, Tenn. It is produced in all sizes up to the limits of transportation from beds usually ranging in thickness from less than 1/2 in. to 6 in. The stone is very resistant to wear and weathering and is marketed throughout the country for many different purposes in exterior and interior construction. The annual production exceeds 36,000 tons, valued at nearly $1,000,000.

An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [bImpulse _P d At max =nwuwu where: bmax = maximum burden in m (ft). P= average detonation pressure in N/m2 (lb per ft2). A= duration of the average detonation pressure in sec. n= 3.1416. w= specific weight of rock in N/m3 (lb per ft3). u= minimum velocity that must be imparted to the rock in m/sec (ft per sec). d= borehole diameter in m (ft).] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m1/2-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [P d Atbmax =gu g = gravitational constant equal to 9.81 m/sect (32.2 ft per sec2).] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per see). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). A very fine dispersion of aluminum oxide is produced by internal oxidation of solid-solution alloy of 0.14 pet A1 in Ag. The particle size of the aluminum oxide is approximntely 50 to 100A in radius. The yield strength of the alloy is increased markedly by internal oxidation. A further increase in strength is produced by cold working the internally oxidized alloy. Recrystallization is retarded by the finely dispessed aluminum oxide particles, so that the strength increase resulting from cold work is retained on annealing at temperatures 14 to about 700°C. MANY workers'-3 in the past have studied various aspects of the internal oxidation of aluminum-silver alloys. This paper is an extension of these studies with emphasis placed on the effect of time and temperature of annealing on the strength of these alloys after oxidation and subsequent cold working. Two general conditions are necessary to internally oxidize an alloy. First, oxygen must diffuse through the base material more rapidly than does the addition; otherwise oxidation will take place as a surface layer. Secondly, the affinity of oxygen for the addition must be greater than for the base material. After internal oxidation of certain alloys takes place, a marked increase in hardness accompanied by higher yield stress and improved creep properties is noted, presumably as a result of the highly dispersed oxide within the base material. Meijering and Druyvesteyn1 also noted that the internally oxidized portion of a partly oxidized alloy failed to recrys-tallize under annealing conditions that led to coinplete recrystallization of the unoxidized part. EXPERIMENTAL-METHODS AND PROCEDURES Few alloys can be made to contain a second phase that is extremely stable at high temperatures. Silver plus aluminum in solid solution was chosen for these internal oxidation studies because of the high rate of oxygen diffusion through silver and the very stable nature of aluminum oxide. Two alloys were vacuum cast. The nominal compositions were: Alloy A—1 pct Al, balance Ag; Alloy B—0.1 pct Al, balance Ag. Chemical analysis, which does not distinguish between aluminum and aluminum oxide, showed the conlposition to be: Alloy A—1.6 pct Al, and Alloy B—0.14 pct Al. The ingots were machined for surface cleaning, swaged and drawn to 0.020-in. diam wire. A sample 20 ft long of the 0.020-in. dianl wire of each composition was annealed 24 hr at 800°C in pure dry hydrogen. Each wire was then cut into two equal pieces. Photomicrographs of the 0.14 pct A1 alloy are shown in Fig. 1, the annealed 0.020-in. wire at the left and the oxidized wire to the right. The oxidation treatment for the first set of data was 1000 hr at 800°C in air. After this treatment the 1 pct A1 proved to be brittle. It is assumed that high alunlinum oxide concentration at the grain boundaries was responsible. The 0.14 pct Al wire remained ductile and all further data were derived using this alloy. One-half of this wire, about 5 ft, plus 5 ft of as-homogenized wire, was then drawn cold to 0.005 in. diam. All tensile tests were conducted with an Instron Engineering Corp. tensile-testing machine, Model TT-B. Unless otherwise indicated, the tests were made at room temperature with a strain rate of 0.1 per min. All metallographic samples were etched with an aqueous solution of 2 pct each of CrO3 and H2SO4 . EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION PARTICLE SIZE DETERMINATION A study was made of the particle size of the aluminum oxide produced in the samples of Ag + 0.14 pct Al, oxidized 1000 hr at 800°C. A cross section of the as-oxidized wire was mounted in bakelite, polished, and etched with an aqueous solution of 2 pct each of CrO3 and H2SO4. The specimen was then thoroughly cleaned by stripping successive coatings made by applying 10 pct nitrocellulose in amyl acetate. The final replica of the cross section was made by applying 2 pct nitrocellulose in amyl acetate. The replica was stripped, transferred to a copper screen, shadow cast with chromium at 10 deg and photographs taken using a Phillips Metallix electron microscope at an accelerating potential of 100 kv. A photograph of an etched sample of the as-oxidized material is shown in Fig. 2. We believe the pits in the photograph are places were A12O3 inclusions were sitting in the matrix. SIZE of grinding media is one of the principal factors affecting efficiency and capacity of tumbling-type grinding mills. It is best determined for any particular installation by lengthy plant tests with carefully kept records. However, a method of calculating the proper sizes, based on correct theoretical principles and tested by experience, can be very helpful, both for new installations and for guiding existing operations. As a general principle, the proper size of the make-up grinding balls added to an operating mill is the size that will just break the largest feed particles. If the balls are too large the number of breaking contacts will be reduced and grinding capacity will suffer. Moreover, the amount of extreme fines produced by each contact will be increased, and size distribution of the ground product may be adversely affected. If the balls added are too small, grinding efficiency is decreased by wasted contacts that are too weak to break the particles nipped; these largest particles are gradually worn down in the mill by the progressive breakage of corners and edges. Ball rationing is the regular addition of make-up balls of more than one size. The largest balls added are aimed at the largest and hardest particles. However, the contacts are governed entirely by chance, and the probability of inefficient contacts of large balls with small particles, and of small balls with large particles, is as great as the desired contact of large balls with large particles. Ball rationing should be considered an adjunct or secondary modification of the principle of selecting the make-up ball size to break the largest particle present. Empirical Equation In 19521,2 the author presented the following emerical equation for the make-up ball size: B - ball, rod, or pebble diameter in inches. F = size in microns 80 pct of new feed passes. Wi - work index at the feed size F. Cs - percentage of mill critical speed. S — specific gravity of material being ground. D == mill diameter in feet inside liners. K - 200 for balls, 300 for rods, 100 for silica pebbles. Eq. 1 was derived by selecting the factors that apparently should influence make-up ball size selection and by considering plant experience with each factor. Even though Eq. 1 is completely empirical, it has been generally successful in selecting the proper size of make-up balls for specific operations. But an equation based on theoretical considerations should be used with more confidence and have wider application. The theoretical influence of each of the governing factors listed under Eq. 1 was accordingly considered in detail, as described below, and a theoretical equation for make-up ball sizes was derived. Derivation of Theoretical Equation Ball Size and Feed Size: The basis of this analysis is that the largest ball in a mill should be just sufficient to break the largest feed particle into several pieces, excluding occasional pieces of tramp oversize. In this article the size F which 80 pct passes is considered the criterion of the effective maximum particle feed size. The smallest dimension of the largest particles present controls their breaking strength. This dimension is approximately equal to F. As a starting point for the analysis it is assumed that a 1-in. steel ball will effectively grind material with 80 pct passing 1 mm, or with F- 1000µ or about 16 mesh. The breaking force exerted by a ball varies with its weight, or as the cube of its diameter R. The force in pounds per square inch required to break a particle varies as its cross-sectional area, or as its diameter squared. It follows that when a 1-in. ball breaks a 1-mm particle, a 2-in. ball will break a 4-mm particle, and a 3-in. ball a 9-mm particle. This is in accordance with practical experience, as well as being theoretically correct. Confirmation of this reasoning is supplied by the Third Theory of Comminution," which states that the work necessary to break a particle of diameter F varies as F. Since work equals force times distance, and the distance of deformation before breaka4e varies as F it follolvs that the breaking force should vary as F½ These relationships are expressed in Table I, with a 1-in. ball representing one unit of force and breaking a 1-mm particle. This establishes theoretically the general rule used in Eq. 1 that the ball size should vary as the square root of the particle size to be broken.
