WHEN Spain established colonies on the North American continent, some of her land grants, in what is now the United States, reserved to the Crown deposits of gold, silver, and mercury. Later mineral rights were reserved under some of the English Crown charters involving land in the eastern part of North America, with provisions for the payment of royalties thereon to the Crown. Reservation of mineral deposits to the United States Government was instituted by an ordinance of Congress on May 20, 1785, which applied to such deposits in the Northwest Territory, then north of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi River, and provided that there should be reserved "one third of all gold, silver, lead, and copper mines, to be sold or otherwise disposed of as Congress shall hereafter direct." Little was known then of the mineral resources of the country; the Great Lakes copper region had just come into the possession of the United States by treaty and much of the western mineral land still belonged to France and Spain. The policy of leasing mineral deposits was enacted by Congress under the act of March 3, 1807, which provided that "the President of the United States shall be, and is hereby, authorized to lease any lead mine which has been or may hereafter be discovered in the Indiana Territory, for a term not exceeding five years," and in the same year the Government reserved 345,600 acres of land in northern Illinois, valuable for lead. In 1816 Congress provided that in all cases where a tract of public land containing a lead mine or salt spring was applied for by settlers on the public domain, no permission to work the mine or spring would be granted without the approbation of the President of the United States. By the act of March 1, 1847 (9 Stat. 146), the control of mineral lands was transferred, with all records, from the War Department to the Treasury Department, and by the act of March 3, 1849 (9 Stat. 395), supervisory powers over lead and other mines of the United States were transferred to the Secretary of the Interior. Following the discovery of gold in California in 1848, President Polk advocated the leasing of mineral lands acquired from Mexico under the treaty of 1848. However, owing to the lack of communication and transportation facilities and the consequent difficulty of checking on production and operations, leasing was found impracticable. Mining was permitted to be carried on in each district under rules made by the miners themselves and patterned after the Mexican mining system. To meet the situation, Congress enacted mining laws in 1866, 1870, and 1872, which provided for possession by location and for private ownership, after discovery, by patent of essentially all mineral deposits belonging to the United States, except coal. Many other acts were passed by Congress applying to specific regions and states, reserving salt, lead, or other minerals, some of which provided for the leasing of such deposits. However, very few if any leases were issued thereunder. Not until 1901 (31 Stat. 745) were the mining laws extended to include salt, and in 1910 they were revised to specify salines and associated products. At the turn of the century, it became more and more evident that the mining laws developed for metallic minerals were not practical for the development and conservation of oil and gas, coal, potash, phosphate, or oil shale. Following withdrawals by the Secretary of the Interior as authorized by the act of June 25, 1910, the Department of the Interior recommended leasing legislation; however, it was not until February 25, 1920, that the Mineral Leasing Act was passed by Congress. This act authorized leasing all public lands potentially valuable for oil, gas, coal, phosphate, sodium, or oil shale. The Organic Act, creating the Geological Survey in 1879, imposed upon its director the duty of classifying the public lands.' The early years of the Survey were devoted largely to the accumulation of fundamental data and, with only minor exceptions, land classification was not seriously undertaken until 1906. Since that year, it has been actively pursued with respect particularly to leasable minerals and water power values. On March 3, 1873 (17 Stat. 607) Congress authorized the sale of coal lands of limited acreage to individuals at $10 to $20 an acre, depending on the distance from a railroad, and in 1907 a new scale of prices was adopted by the Secretary of the Interior, based, more logically, on the quality and thickness of the coal deposits, their depth below the earth's surface, and their accessibility. At that time it was much cheaper and easier to obtain incidental title to coal rights under the homestead laws at $1.25 an acre. On March 3, 1909, the first separation act (35 Stat. 844) became a law. It authorized patents, with a reservation of the coal and mining rights involved to the United States, to persons who in good faith had entered public lands under the non-mineral land laws prior to withdrawal, classification, claim, or report that such lands were valuable for coal. It solved the problem only partially, and the practice thereupon adopted by the department of making coal withdrawals "from all forms of entry" instead of "from coal entry" expedited the more complete solution effected by later acts. By the act of June 22, 1910 (36.Stat. 583) withdrawn and classified coal lands were declared subject to entry under the homestead, desert land, and Carey acts, provided a waiver of the coal rights accompanied the application, and by the act of April 30, 1912 (37 Stat. 105) the same privilege was extended to State selections and isolated tracts. The act of August 24, 1912 (37 Stat. 496) extended the separation policy to lands withdrawn for oil and gas in Utah, and finally the act of July 17, 1914 (38 Stat. 509) extended it to all nonmineral filings on public lands theretofore or thereafter

The Anglovaal Group has released details concerning its new processes for recovering platinum group metals, stating that the Group's system, which involves batch processing and precipitation methods for these metals (PGM's), leads to faster recovery times, increased recoveries, and higher purities than the conventional process. Insofar as South Africa's Merensky Reef is concerned, the Anglovaal method of recovering palladium first (as opposed to platinum in the conventional process) enables it to use a much simpler process in the subsequent recovery of platinum and other metals. Because the processes give cleaner separations, the volume of material to be recirculated -and therefore the total volume of material in the recovery circuits- is reduced substantially.

Location of Basins and Geologic Features of Occurrence: The major ground-water resources of California occur and are stored in the many large alluvium-filled valleys of the state. The deposits of Quaternary age which hold the ground water commonly are called valley fill. Meinzerl has discussed the characteristic features of this fill and showed that for western United States its distribution is concentrated chiefly in western Utah, Nevada, central Oregon, California, southern Arizona, and central New Mexico (see fig. 1). For California the principal ground-water basins are shown on fig. 2. Except for the Mojave Desert and the "Basin and Range" Valleys (fig. 2, Nos. 23 and 23A), which are not shown individually, the basins outlined on fig. 2 contain all the large reservoirs in valley fill within the state. The Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys (fig. 2) together comprise the Great Central Valley of California, which has an area of about 18,000 square miles. The Sacramento Valley contains about 5000 square miles of valley lands, approxi- mately equal to the area of Connecticut; the San Joaquin Valley embraces about 13,000 square miles, equivalent to the areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut combined. Both the area and the ground-water use in the Central Valley is far greater than for all the other shaded alluvial basins of fig. 2 added together. Except for the Sacramento Valley, all the major ground-water basins of the state are south of Sacramento. The valley fill in these ground-water basins has been transported by streams and most of it has been laid down in alluvial fans, producing the typical alluvial-fan structure of aquifers radiating as tongues from a prismatic pile of coarse, permeable debris at the canyon mouths; these aquifers are encased down slope by poorly sorted materials consisting of a clayey matrix with imbedded pebbles and boulders, interbedded with flood-plain silt. In the deeper inland structural valleys, the alluvial deposits interfinger at depth in the valley bottoms with horizontally bedded lacustrine sand, silt, and clay. The San Joaquin Valley is a good example. In the coastal valleys exposed to the sea, such as the Los Angeles coastal plain, the alluvial fans pass coastward into lagoonal and thence to shallow marine deposits. In all these basins, the gravel is coarsest and most permeable near the apexes of the fans, but tongues or lenses of clean gravel and sand may extend for many miles down the fan. Thus, these water-bearing structures are in a position to absorb stream flow near the canyon mouths and to transmit it through the buried radiating conduits.

Introduction. THE Georgetown mining district is located in Deerlodge county, Mont., about 20 miles west of Anaconda. It lies along the divide between the headwaters of Warm Springs creek, draining eastward, and Flint creek, flowing west and north through the Philipsburg valley. The actual divide is formed by Cable mountain, a narrow ridge running north and south, terminating to the south in low hills overlooking Georgetown lake, and to the north in a high, rugged plateau that falls off to the west to the wide valley of Flint creek. Oil the eastern, or Warm Springs, slope of Cable mountain is the Cable mine, with the Hidden Lake mine a few miles north. On the western slope is the Southern Cross group, with smaller mines, the Twilight, Cincinnati, Red Lion, and Big Bill, at intervals to the northward. The Georgetown mines lie in the hills south of Cable mountain; the Philipsburg mines, of which the Granite Mountain, Bimetallic, Hope, and Trout are the chief, form a separate group to the north, overlooking Flint Creek valley and Philipsburg. (See Fig. 1.1) The region ranges in elevation from 5,000 to 9,000 ft. It is, with the exception of the lower valleys, well timbered with small fir and pine, although Cable mountain and the higher summits to the northward rise slightly above timber line. The main valleys have the smooth contours of glaciation, and their mouths are frequently choked with morainal deposits.

THE tabular statement accompanying this note shows the money cost in each of the three departments of manufacture, of 17 leading items, and also the proportion (expressed in a decimal fraction) which each of these items bears to the total cost. The statement can hardly be taken for more than an average illustration of the clear showing of ratios and of results which may be made by such an arrangement, for not only will these items vary from month to month in any given works, but the methods themselves of manufacture differ widely in different works. It is obvious that such a statement, however useful it may be, must be submitted with but exceedingly little explanation or discussion, or with none at all, for the reason that to enter at any satisfac-

C.-From being one of the most maligned of metals-a veritable bugaboo-cadmium has almost overnight become respectable, though its slender claim to respectability rests almost wholly on the possibility of its substitution for tin. Preliminary to any campaign for such substitution, particularly for enforced substitution, the possible supply of cadmium should he determined as closely as possible; for that reason the statistical inquiry of which this paper embodies the results was undertaken. Production Cadmium is marketed in two forms, as metallic cadmium, in sticks or bars, and as cadmium sulfide, the pigment. The metal has found its greatest field of use in this country as a component of an easily fusible alloy that is used in automatic fire extinguishers. The sulfide is .used to some extent in paints but chiefly to give color and luster to glass and porcelain. The metal was first made in this country by the Grasselli Chemical

The effects of gain size on the room-temperature tensile properties of commercial(A- 70)-purity and iodide-purity titanium were investigated by concurrent tensile testing and thin-foil electron transmission studies. The mechanical tests showed that the effect of grain size on the yield, flow, and fracture stresses could be expressed by relations of the Hall-Petch type. The magnitude of the grain size effect on the yield stress was larger for commercial-purity than for high-purity titanium, but in both materials it was intermediate between that typically observed for fcc and for bcc metals. The effect of strain on the gain size sensitivity of the flow stress was found to reflect the grain size dependence of strain hardening. The electron transmission study indicated that the tensile behavior could be accounted for in terms of the dislocation densities and distributions formed during deformation. It was concluded that the effect of grain size on strength could be attributed to a relationship between grain size and the dislocation densities generated in initiating and sustaining plastic flow, the difference in stress levels being due to strain hardening. The relationships between recrystallized grain size, uniaxial tensile properties, and dislocation substructure have not been explored in any detail for a titanium. With titanium and its alloys finding increasing applications in aerospace systems, such information has become essential. The research described in this paper had two objectives: first, to document the effect of grain size on the yield, flow, and fracture stresses of unalloyed a titanium by the tensile testing of recrystalliied specimens at room temperature; second, to attempt an interpretation of the mechanical test behavior in terms of the dislocation structures formed on deformation, as observed by transmission electron microscopy of thin foils prepared from deformed tensile specimens. The observations reported here are restricted to room-temperature deformation; the effect of temperature on the yield and flow stresses of a titanium and the athermal nature of the contribution of grain size to the flow stress have been discussed elsewhere.1"3 EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Two purity grades of unalloyed titanium have been investigated: Crucible Steel A-70, a typical commer- cial-purity product, and a high-purity iodide grade supplied by the Foote Mineral Co. Chemical analyses for interstitial impurity contents are given in Table I, together with values for the total interstitial atom fractions in terms of oxygen equivalents, which were calculated by the method outlined previously.4 ,5 According to the manufacturer's nominal analysis, the A-70 grade also contains about 3700 ppm of Fe. The A-70 grade was supplied as 1/4-in.-diam centerless-ground rod. The iodide grade was supplied as crystal bar which was consolidated to approximately 1/4-in.-diam rod by a single, rapid, molten zone pass, using electron beam heating. The 1/4-in. rods were cold-swaged to 0.078-in.-diam wires and 2-in. lengths were recrystallized in a vacuum of -5 x 10-5 torr, giving grain sizes in the range 0.8 to 30 . The thermal treatments and resulting grain sizes are summarized in Table 11. Since there was in no case any obvious sign of a bimodal dis tribution of grain sizes, the grain size values quoted in Table I1 are those obtained from mean linear intercept measurements involving >I00 grains. For the two coarse grain sizes the measurements were made using conventional optical techniques. It was noted during these determinations that the etchants used (10 pct HF; 30 pct HN03; 60 pct H20 and 2 pct HF; 2 pct H202; 96 pct H20 were both tried) etched grain boundaries very nonuniformly and optical polarization effects had to be employed to reveal boundaries which might otherwise have been missed. It was found that this problem became more acute with the finer grain sizes as the usefulness of polarization diminished.

Measurements have been made of the variation of internal friction with temperature for spectroscopically pure silver, and for o series of solid solutions of silver with cadmium, indium, and tin, using a Ke-type torsion pendulum apparatus. Some experiments have also been made to investigate the effect of nonmetallic impurity on grain boundary relaxation in silver. The effect of the alloying elements is to increase the grain boundary viscosity, and to raise the activation energy for grain boundary relaxation from 22,000 cal per mol for pure silver to 43,000 cal per mol for the solid solutions; the same value being obtained, within the limits of experimental error, for all the alloying elements and solute concentrations investigated. Results of the experiments show exactly the same trend as those obtained previously for a similar series of copper solid solutions. They are in agreement with the general theory of grain boundary relaxation developed by Zener and Ke, but do not seem to be in agreement with either of the mechanisms so far put forward to explain grain boundary slip. EXPERIMENTS described in this paper were made as part of an investigation into the effect of alloying elements in substitutional solid solution on grain boundary viscosity, measured by the internal friction method developed by Ke.&apos; The apparatus and experimental procedure have already been described.&apos; Preliminary work was done with spectro-scopically pure silver. Experimental Work Materials Used—All the materials were supplied in the form of % mm diam wire by Messrs. Johnson Matthey and Co. Ltd. The silver and all the alloying elements used were spectroscopically pure. Composition of the alloys is given in Table I. They were all melted and chill cast under the same conditions as the copper alloys. The ingots were rolled to 1/4 in. sq rod with intermediate annealing at 600°C in an atmosphere of cracked ammonia when necessary. These rods were then drawn to wire by standard procedure with intermediate bright anneals at suitable steps in the drawing operations. Specimens from the annealed wires were sectioned longitudinally. mechanically polished, and examined under the microscope. They were then etched and reexamined. Grain sizes were reasonably uniform for all wires, and no traces of a second constituent were observed. The wires were weighed before and after testing so as to measure any loss of the alloying element due to evaporation. The loss was less than the accuracy of measurement—< 0.1 pct of the total weight— for the Ag-In and Ag-Sn alloys, but appreciable loss of weight occurred in the case of the Ag-Cd alloys. The percentage loss is given in Table 11. X-ray diffraction photographs were taken of all thc wires after test to determine whether there was any marked preferred orientation. Results of the examination are given in Table 111. Experiments on Spectroscopically Pure Silver-— Experiments were made on specimens in which the grain diameter was small relative to that of the wire, and on one specimen in which the grains were grown by the usual strain-anneal method to extend across the full diameter of the wire. These large grained specimens will be referred to as single crystal specimens. The wires were annealed for 11/2 hr at 700°C, and experiments were made at two frequencies of vibration, 1.5 and 0.4 vibrations per sec. The variation of internal friction with temperature is shown in Fig. 1. Experiments on a second small grain specimen gave approximately the same results as for the first wire. It will be seen from Fig. 1 that the peak in the curve for the small grained wire, which is presum-

Experiments were conducted to determine the quantity and purity of ultraclean anthracite that could be prepared in the laboratory, using conventional separating techniques. A low, a medium, and a high-volatile anthracite were studied. Specific gravity separation followed by grinding, screening, and refloating at lighter specific gravities yielded small quantities of material purified to 1.0% ash, as follows: from low-volatile anthracite, 0.7%; from medium-volatile coal, 1.0%; and from high-volatile coal, 2.3%. The reduction in ash had no appreciable effect on the volatile matter or sulfur content of the coal. The limited quantities of material containing 1.0% or less ash obtainable indicate that if ultraclean coal is desired, a practical approach should include the processing units as an integral part of a convc.ntiona1 dense-media washing plant. Anthracite preparation practices during much of the industry&apos;s history were geared to maximum recovery of the larger sizes, pea through egg, which were used in hand-fired, domestic furnaces. Those sizes were cleaned to meet trade requirements, and the smaller sizes were usually higher in ash content. The impression, thus, was that ash content of anthracite always increased as the sizes got smaller. It was presumed that it was impossible to wash the finer sizes to extremely low ash contents. Following World War 11, the classical domestic market began to decline and the finer sizes assumed an increasingly large share of the market. For example, in 1949l 61% of the production was still pea and larger. Fig. l2 shows that -by 1955 these sizes accounted for only 50%, and in 1965, they were only 39% of the total anthracite produced. With the reduction in the market, increased quality was demanded, especially in export markets, and an increasing number of dense-media magnetite washers were installed in new and existing cleaning plants. In 1965, the coarse coal prepared at 59 breakers in the anthracite fields was sampled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM); approximately 50% of these plants were equipped with dense-media magnetite washers.3 Since 1950, more attention has been focused on the use of finer sizes for numerous industrial uses, including iron-ore sintering, pelletizing, foundry coke-making, cement manufacture, production of calcium carbide, and of carbon electrodes, etc. Most industrial uses require relatively clean anthracite, such as 10 to 11% ash for sintering and foundry coke, 7% for aluminum melting-pot cathode carbon, and 5% for carbide production. Hence, cleaning methods have been improved to the extent that dense-media washers, hydraulic cyclones, and flotation cells have been introduced as fine-coal-cleaning devices. It is now possible to wash the buckwheat, rice, and barley sizes (9116 X 3132-in.) to ash contents as low as 8 to 10% in dense-media devices, but washing the -3132-in. sizes to those limits presents more difficult problems, due mainly to the fineness of the material. This USBM investigation was conducted to determine the amount and purity of ultraclean anthracite that could be prepared in the laboratory, using conventional separating techniques. The goal was to reduce the ash content to a level acceptable for industrial carbon uses, including electrode manufacture, which generally requires an ash content of 1% or less. While low-ash content is of primary importance in selecting industrial carbons, the amounts of other constituents are also important, including iron, silicon, titanium, nickel, vanadium, and sulfur. They were not considered in this work, since their occurrence in deashed anthracite has been studied elsewhere.4 The results of the present investigation were used to design a flowsheet, suggesting a method for producing ultraclean anthracite as part of conventional preparation practice, using dense-media vessels, crushers, pulverizers,

WHAT Colonel Dwight says regarding the treat-ment of oxidized ores1 holds true also of the silver-lead smelting operations in Utah. The ore sought for was such as would, with appropriate fluxes, yield slag, and "lead bullion," as the lead reduced from the ore and carrying its gold and silver, was called. No matte, and probably little or no speiss, was yielded, and hence there was nothing to roast, either of ore or matte. But, by 1880, when I first took hold in smelting, there was quite a production of matte at the works of the Ger-mania Smelting and Refining Co., Utah, because, by that time, ores containing some pyrite and galena were being smelted. This was due, as at the Grant Works, Denver, to the more attractive price paid for the treatment of such ores. The matte, containing about 5 per cent. copper, was accordingly heap-roasted and returned to the blast furnace for the recovery of its contained metals. By this time there had been built a long-bedded, hand-rabbled reverber-atory roaster with a hearth of about 40 by 10 ft. in size, and in this matte and ore, crushed at the sampling mill, was treated. When, in 1892, I took control of this works, called& now the Germania Lead Works, three other roasters had been added, but the prac-tice of heap-roasting continued. This had the merit of needing no equipment, and of doing good work, because the pieces that were imperfectly roasted went back upon the next roast heap. At this time, when some suitable lump ore was obtainable, I roasted in heaps, in a satisfactory way. By 1892, the Bruckner cylinder roaster had been installed, which, compared with the reverberatory roaster, reduced labor. As such a cylinder revolves, a talus of ore is formed within it and at the same time fresh surfaces are exposed to the air, but the trouble was that the air did not reach to the bottom of the cylinder. This we corrected by placing a steam jet at the fire-box end, to project the air down-ward upon this stagnant ore, thus increasing the speed and completeness of roasting without at the same time increasing dust formation. The firing, if skilfully done, gave a somewhat sintered product, but with certain ores a slight access of heat over the normal would cause accretions to form within the cylinder near the fire end. These could be cut off by running back the fire box and barring off the crusts. It was in 1895 that the Bruckner cylinders at the Arkansas Valley plant, Leadville, were giving unsatis-factory service and I was called in to investigate. The steam jet was put in use as at the Germania Lead Works, but we found that, due to the altitude (10,500 ft.), combustion was feebler than at sea level or even at 4000 to 5000 ft. Later it appears, as Colonel Dwight states, that R. D. Rhodes and Mots sought to increase the air supply by admission through perforated tiles, but the trouble was due to the air itself.

The equilibrium of gaseous H20-H2 mixtures with liquid iron-columbium alloys in the range 0.2 to 2.4 pct Cb shows that the activity coefficient of oxygen is strongly diminished by Cb. The oxide in equilibvium with the melt is identified as CbO2. The equi-librium constant at 1600 deg C is [%Cb][fo. % 0]2 = 2.9 x 10-4 where log fo= —0.14 [%Cb]. The deoxidizing power is comparable to that of vanadium, COLUMBIUM (niobium) is finding increasing use as an alloying element in steel. It forms several stable oxides and is removed from the steel bath by oxidizing slags. The specific oxide formed in steel-making is not known although Sazanov snd Shvarts-man,&apos; in their study of its partition between slag and metal, have assumed this to be Cb2O5 It is the purpose of this study to determine its deoxidation equilibrium at 1600°c, the nature of the oxide formed and the interaction between columbium and oxygen in the melt. The investigation was based on the reaction H2 + O=H2O; Kl=ph2o/(pH2[%O]) [1] in which 0 signifies oxygen dissolved in the liquid Fe-Cb alloy. The method and equipment of recent studies2,3 were utilized. In brief, the molten alloy, contained in a small crucible, is held in a controlled mixture of steam, hydrogen, and argon until equilibrium is reached. It is then cooled quickly in a stream of helium and analyzed for columbium and oxygen, the latter by vacuum fusion.4 The solubility of the oxide in liquid iron is determined by visual observation of scum formation on the surface of the melt. Crucibles of MgO proved unsatisfactory because of partial reduction at the metal interface. Pure A12O3 crucibles were heavily blackened by the melt and could not be used at high concentrations of columbium. Silica crucibles were more satisfactory but these introduced some silicon into the melt thus necessitating an uncertain but small correction for its effect on the activities of the other solutes. In silica it was possible to observe the scum formation when the melt became saturated and there was no apparent reaction between scum and crucible. The procedure for saturated melts was as follows. The alloy charge composed of electrolytic iron and columbium grain was melted and held at constant temperature. The gas ratio H2O:H2 was progressively increased by raising the saturator temperature until a point was reached at which a bright film appeared on the surface and covered it completely. This film could be dissolved by raising the temperature of the melt and it reappeared when the temperature was lowered. Under a partial film covering, utilizing bare areas for temperature measurement, the melt was brought to equilibrium with the atmosphere by holding at temperature for about 1 hr as suggested by Dastur.5 INTERACTION IN THE MELT Several experiments were made without columbium to establish a base in silica crucibles. The results are shown in Table I. Except for one run, they agreed well with Floridis1 comparable results in other crucibles. The value of log K1 is taken from Table I as 0.58. This is slightly larger than Floridis&apos; result, probably because of less elaborate safeguards against thermal diffusion. Results obtained in the Fe-Cb-0 series in which no scum formed are shown in Table 11. The equilibrium ratio Kl is defined as ph2o/(ph2[%O]). It is related to the equilibrium constant K1 as follows:

High purity molybdenum ingots containing controlled amounts of a single impurity element (oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon) were prepared. These ingots were tested for ductility by bending test specimens at various temperatures. The relationship between the plastic behavior of the ingots and their chemical composition has been determined. MANY proposed applications for molybdenum require ductility at or near room temperature. At the present time, it is possible to obtain wrought molybdenum with considerable ductility only if special fabrication techniques are used to control the grain structure. Starting with are-cast or powder metallurgy ingots, the usual methods for obtaining ductility rely on fabrication procedures that result in fibered microstructures in the finished product. Recently, it has been found that the ductility of either powder metallurgy or are-cast molybdenum can be improved by uniform recrystallization of the metal to a very fine equiaxed grain structure.&apos; The need for a fibered or a fine grained structure may limit the practical usefulness of molybdenum. For example, welding. which may be used in fabricating the metal, generally produces coarse grained structures that lead to brittleness. This applies, certainly, to currently available commercial molybdenum. Although commercial molybdenum is brittle when the grains are coarse, it has been shown experimentally that fine grained structures are not always essential for ductility. For instance, as-cast molybdenum with a coarse columnar grain structure is ductile if it is sufficiently pure.&apos; Because high purity cast molybdenum has good ductility even when coarse grained, it is probable that the brittleness in coarse grained commercial molybdenum is caused by the impurity content of the metal. Although the general effects of impurities on the cold ductility of molybdenum have been known in a qualitative manner for some time, no quantitative evaluation of these effects has been available. The present investigation was made in order to determine more accurately the effects of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon on the cold ductility of cast molybdenum. Oxygen has long been known to be detrimental to ductility, although the minimum amount which will embrittle molybdenum has been open to speculation. Parke and Ham" showed that ingots with oxygen contents above 0.003 pct could not be forged. Maringer and Schwope have described the embrittle-ment of molybdenum wire by oxygen. A discussion on the effects of heat treatment on the distribution of oxygen in molybdenum has been given by Perry, Spacil, and Wulff." Although nitrogen would also be expected to have harmful effects on ductility, no extensive work has been done previously to determine whether this is so. However, Tury and Krausz" found that wires presumably with less than 0.007 pct N were brittle. Carbon is added to commercial cast molybdenum for deoxidation. Parke and Ham" have shown that molybdenum containing as much as 0.06 pct C could be forged if the oxygen was kept below 0.003 pct. Also, Bruckart and others&apos; found that the room temperature ductility of sintered molybdenum improved with carbon contents up to 0.84 pct. However, Rengstorff and Fischer&apos; found that residual carbide particles in cast molybdenum apparently had an unfavorable effect on room temperature ductility.

Various factors must be considered in an engineering evaluation of gravity-drainage reservoirs. Among these are: (1) the effect of producing rate on total oil recovery; (2) the effect upon well productivity and ultimate recovery of the pressure level maintained during the producing life of the reservoir; (3) the economic advantage of full or partial pressure maintenance; and (4) estimate of the rate of gas production and injection and the possible purchase of gas under conditions of full pressure maintenance to ascertain compressor facilities needed. All of these factors can be evaluated only when a reliable method is employed for determining reservoir performance in gravity-drainage reservoirs. The purpose of this paper is to present a general method for calculating the performance of a gravity-drainage reservoir. This method is applicable for conditions of complete pressure maintenance, partial pressure maintenance and normal pressure depletion. Provisions are made to take into account variations throughout the reservoir of reservoir configuration, changes in permeability and fluid composition. Based on the method presented in this paper, an IBM 650 computer program has been developed. The past performance of an actual gravity-drainage reservoir producing under conditions of declining pressure and no gas injection was duplicated using this program. INTRODUCTION In tilted reservoirs the production of oil is influenced by drainage of oil from upstructure to downstructure locations. When this downstructure drainage of oil is sufficient to cause effective segregation of the gas and oil in a reservoir, the reservoir is usually classified as a segregation drive or gravity-drainage reservoir. (Discussion will be restricted to gravity-drainage reservoirs which have no encroachment of edge water.) The important feature in gravity-drainage reservoirs is the density difference between reservoir oil and gas. These phases tend to segregate in the reservoir with the result that in the gas cap the oil saturation is maintained at a higher level by drainage of oil from the gas-cap area. Oil can be produced from the oil zone at a low gas-oil ratio and reservoir energy is thereby conserved. The standard material balance in not adequate for predicting gravity-dramage reservoir performance because it does not take into account the difference in saturation above and below the gas-oil contact. Several authors&apos;.&apos; have presented methods for calculating the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs in which reservoir pressure is maintained constant by gas injection into the gas cap. Using some simplifying assumptions, these methods can be employed with a desk calculator to give acceptable results. The problem of predicting the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs under the conditions of declining reservoir pressure is many time more complex than that of constant pressure. fierefore, attempis to develop a method suitable for desk calculation have required excessively simplified assumptions. In the past several years, highspeed digital computers have become more widely available for reservoir engineering problems. These corn puters are well suited to problems such as the prediction of the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs with pressure decline. Many of the simplifying assumptions necessary for hand computation can be eliminated so that a realistic approach to the gravity-drainage process can be made. CONCEPTUAL PICTURE OF OIL MOVEMENT IN GRAVITY-DRAINAGE RESERVOIRS Before attempting to develop an analytical treatment for conditions occuring in a gravity-drainage reservoir, a concept should be formed concerning the movement of fluids in the reservoir as oil is produced. A review of the literature&apos;.&apos; shows that it is customary to classify gravity-drainage operations into two categories—(1) with complete pressure maintenance, and (2) with declining pressure. The same line of reasoning will be followed in presenting the concept of the movement of fluids in the reservoir because it is easier to visualize the movement of fluids under conditions of complete pressure maintenance. After discussing complete pressure maintenance, an analogy will be made between that and the case of declining pressure. It should be kept in mind throughout that the final aim for the problem of solving gravity-drainage performance with digital computers will be to develop a general program for any kind of gravity-drainage reservoir. COMPLETE PRESSURE MAINTENANCE One feature which is generally common in gravity-drainage reservoirs is a gas cap located at the top of the structure. This is shown in Fig. 1(a). A study zvas made of rate-sensitive plastic deformation and superplasticity in alloys of lead and tin. These alloys (lead, PO-19 pct Sn, Sn-38 pct Pb, Sn-2 pct Pb, tin) were extruded, aged at room temperature, or melted and resolidified to produce a variety of ~nicrostrnctures. Flow stress us strain rate data were obtained frorn tension tests for strain rates between 10-6 and 1 min-1. The curve log o .us log £ was S-shaped jor fine-grained materials and approxinzately linear for coarse-grained nzaterials. At constant grain size, the behavior was relatively insensitive to conposition. High rate sensitivity (d log o/d log k) and superplasticity occurred at intermediate strain rates in fine-grained materials and are believed to be associated with a transition with strain rate in the mode of plastic flow. This transition was shifted to higher strain rates with increasing temperataire or decrensing grain size. The high rate rneclzanisrn is presunzed to be slip, while rnetallographic evidence sug-gests that the low rate lnechanism is pain boundary sliding. PEARSON&apos; discovered that extruded eutectic alloys of Pb-Sn and Bi-Sn could be elongated as much as 2000 pct in tension. The ability for stretching decreased with aging time or annealing to increase the grain size. At high strain rates, or if the material was in the cast condition, normal ductility was observed. Following deformation of the extruded Pb-Sn eutectic at low rates, Pearson observed an equiaxed granular structure on an initially flat surface, while rapid straining produced elongated grains. He attributed the large deformation in the extruded alloys to the persistence of extremely small grains to a temperature sufficiently high for inter granular flow. Avery and backofen2 measured the strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress, m = d In old In 6, in the Pb-Sn eutectic and established a correlation between m and the tensile elongation. In the extruded eutectic alloy the strain rate sensitivity was 0.1 to 0.2 at rapid rates and the elongation was small, while at low rates m increased to 0.4 to 0.6 and superplastic elongation was observed. They also noted a grain size effect. In the case of the cast Pb-Sn eutectic the strain rate sensitivity remained at 0.1 over the range of strain rates of their experiment (3 x 10"3 to 2 min-I). These authors suggested that diffusional (Nabarro-Herring) creep was the mechanism by which deformation occurred at low strain rates, while climb-controlled creep occurred at high rates. Two predictions of this model are that, at low strain rates, the strain rate sensitivity approaches 1, i.e., Newtonian viscosity, and that the strain rate at constant stress varies as D/L2, where D is the coefficient of self-diffusion and L the grain size. More recently, a mechanical and microstructural investigation of the dilute superplastic alloy, Sn-5 pct Bi, has been done.3 The results show that the high strain rate sensitivity is associated with a transition with strain rate of the mechanism of plastic flow. At low strain rates, grain boundary sliding and its associated accommodation processes were evident, while at high strain rates quasi-uniform slip was concluded to be the dominant deformation process. The following experiments were performed to extend our knowledge of the phenomena of superplasticity to a larger range of strain rates, compositions, temperatures, and microstructures in the Pb-Sn alloy system. The question of why a cast structure does not exhibit viscous behavior although it appears to have a fine microstructure2 was investigated.

A technique for studying the mechanism of the froth flotation process in which continuous froth removal does not take place but, instead, an equilibrium is reached between froth and pulp is described. A flotation cell, specially designed to facilitate equilibration, and froth and pulp sampling procedures are described. The main advantage of the technique is that the ability to measure the steady-state froth height allows froth-stability effects to be separated from pulp-process effects. In the flotation of hematite front quartz, linear relationships are found between airflow rate and froth height and between airflow rate and the ratio at equilibrium of mass of values in froth to mass of values in the pulp. A simple mechanistic interpretation of these results is given. It is suggested that froth-stability effects may play a more important role than hitherto allowed. In particular, the way in which concentration and size distribution of gangue particles may affect overall flotation rate is shown.

The thermodynamic properties of the Pb-Ag system have been determined between 775° and 950°C by the cell: Electrotransport measurements on silica-saturated PbO-SiO2 melts established that the conduction was entirely ionic and that lead is present only in the divalent state. The activities of lead and silver exhibit Positive deviations from ideal behavior. In dilute solutions the activities of lead and silver follow Henry&apos;s law. The values obtained for yhb and yig at 1200°K are 1.49 and 1.69, respectively. Determination of a portion of the liquidus curve agrees well with the established phase diagram. provides an accurate means for the thermodynamic study of liquid alloy systems. However, Wagner and wernerl have shown that cells of type I are limited to alloy systems for which the reaction at the alloy-electrolyte interface will be extremely small. The traditional electrolyte for cells of type I has been a low melting point mixture of group IA chlorides, to which a small amount of the compound ACIZa has been added. However, the choice of a chloride electrolyte may not always be practical, in that the Gibbs free energies of formation of the compounds ACIZ, and BCIZb may not be sufficiently different to minimize Reaction [I]. On the other hand, the Gibbs free energies of formation of the oxides of metals A and B may be sufficiently different to minimize Reaction [I]. In this case, the use of molten oxide electrolyte would be clearly advantageous. In the present study, the thermodynamic properties of the Pb-Ag system have been investigated using the cell: Previous galvanic cell studies on the Pb-Ag system2&apos;= are not reliable due to the displacement reaction between the alloys and the chloride electrolyte. Wagner and ~erner,&apos; using Laitinen and Liu&apos;s&apos; value at 450°C for the standard electrode potential of Reaction 111, have estimated the percent error in the activity of lead bPb) when using a chloride electrolyte. At 1000°C the error for xpb = 0.10 is 12 pct. Taking the Gibbs free energies of formation for PbClz and Ag cI,&apos; and the equations of Wagner and Werner,&apos; the error in apb at 1000°C and Xpb =0.10 was calculated to be 140 pct. However, using the Gibbs free energies of formation for Pb O&apos; and an estimated value for Ag 20, the error in apb when using a molten oxide electrolyte at 1000°C was estimated to be less than 1 pct for The virtual reaction of cell I1 for the passage of n Faradays of positive electricity from left to right in the cell is: where 5 is the Faraday equivalent (23,063 cal per v equivalent), E is the electromotive force of the cell in volts, and n is the number of Faradays of electricity required for the transfer of 1 g-atom of lead through the cell. The value of n should be equal to 2 since lead is generally divalent in oxide melts. However, the presence of either tetravalent lead ions or electronic conductivity through the molten oxide electrolyte will result in a value of n greater than 2. Bockris, Kitchener, and Davies&apos; have determined the amount of ionic conductance in a liquid PbO-SiO2 mixture (xPbO= 0.50) at 920°C by measurement of the volumes of CO and C& evolved at a carbon anode during electrolysis. From their data a value of 2.13 * 0.16 was calculated for n. Although their measurements indicate the possible presence of multivalent lead ions and/or electronic conductivity, their measurements were not at silica saturation and no definite conclusions can be drawn. However, as a result of the electrotransport measurements described in the next section the ;due of n can be taken as equal to 2.

In the states east of the Mississippi River, oil field operations were generally restricted during 1927. Active drilling was chiefly confined to the flood district of Bradford, and to the new areas in western Kentucky, Michigan, and southwestern Indiana. In spite of the general depression, production increased in every state, except Illinois. This unexpected increase is. due to several factors. First, in 1926 there was little flush production outside of Illinois, and the decline &apos;curves in all states are exceedingly flat. Second, the floods in Bradford, Pennsylvania, and Allegany County, New York, proceeded normally and increased production in those states for the fourth consecutive year. Third, new pools in Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan gave important flush production. Fourth, the general unsatisfactory market forced the operators to scrutinize carefully all their operations and improve efficiency and production in all possible ways. Increases amounted to approximately 2,000,000 bbl. Illinois lost, 900,000 bbl., leaving a net gain for the states east of the Mississippi River amounting to 1,100,000 bbl., or a total 40,268,000 barrels. Pennsylvania and New York In northern Pennsylvania and southern New York, the principal activity centered in the districts where flooding is being used to increase the recovery from the old districts. Once started, the flood cannot be shut off. The producer must drill wells and take his oil on schedule, or irrevocably lose it. Accordingly, in face of an adverse market Bradford and Bolivar operations increased 24 per cent. This area furnished more than 40 per cent. of the oil wells completed east of the Mississippi River last year, although the average initial production was less than 2.5 bbl. Unlike all normal fields, this production increases for several months until water appears in the well. For this reason, these wells will produce much more oil than would appear probable from the statement of initial production. During the year, air or gas pressure was applied to several new properties. Surplus gas is rarely available and air has been more commonly used.
