MOST mining engineers and geologists realize the value of photographs in their professional work. Members of each group use photographs to illustrate their reports, and articles and photographs, when available, will often save many words of written text in explaining some point or in proving some pet theory. No one hesitates to take aboveground pictures but many rarely take their cameras underground. However, underground photography, too, is really simple. I do not believe that anything new is offered here and the procedures given are merely a compilation of various methods I have tried and used, with some success, over the past six or seven years. The article will deal with photographs to be taken in metal mines, but only in those where no gas hazard exists, with resultant danger of explosions and fire. Some mining company geologists consider the camera a necessary part of their equipment and carry one on their daily trips to the various parts of the mine under their observation. I know of one company whose files of geologic sketches of heading, backs. and veins are supplemented by actual photographs so that a nice geologic picture

SINCE Cahn's¹ paper on plastic deformation in orthorhombic (a) uranium an increasing amount of work is to be expected on orientation of single crystals and preferred orientation in this metal. It would seem desirable to have a table of angles between crystallographic planes (hkl) and (HKL). Table I shows these angles as distances from (loo), (0l0), and (00l), and in Fig. 1 as a standard (001) stereographic projection. Only the locations of poles whose diffracting planes produce Cu Ka reflections up to 0 = 70.5" (i.e. (154) ) are given." The relative reflection of these planes are represented by circle diameters. It is hoped that the projection may also be used in making inverse pole figures, originally suggested by Harris.' Values of 4 were calculated from the expression hH kK 1L cos = hH/a²+kK/b²-lL/c² where the lattice parameters a, b, c, and the spac-ings d were taken from the work of Jacob and Warren." (They report a = 2.852 kX (2.8578 A), b = 5.865 kX (5.8768 A), c = 4.945 kX (4.9550 A).) The parameters reported by them may be subject to revision,4,5 accordingly the interplanar angles are listed to only the nearest tenth of a degree. References ¹R. W. CURTAILMENT of the mineral industry as a whole undoubtedly will follow world peace, but the output of certain minerals should pursue a course well above the average on any curve of probable output projected beyond the trends exhibited through 1939. Without speculating on industrial conditions in the pending recomversion period, demand for fluorspar should be greater than before the war because of these factors, introduced by or resulting directly from military necessity: (1) Discovery and development of new deposits. (2) Improved technology in benefication. (3) New and expanded uses for fluorspar and its derivatives. The steel industry has been and continues to be the greatest consumer of fluorspar, and it wag largely to meet the wartime needs for steel that the domestic fluorspar industry has been expanded so greatly. Not only were the search for and development of new deposits of this mineral considered esstinal but the marginal nature of some of the,c- domestic deposits made it necessary to improve mineral dressinc and processing techniques to utilize them

OTHERS here are far better qualified than I to discuss some of the specific proposals for government regulation of the oil industry. I shall make no attempt to carry oil to Oklahoma. The question of public control, however, is inherent in other branches of the mineral industry in varying degrees, and my comments will be directed mainly toward some of the trends affecting the mineral industry as a whole, as a background for your more specific consideration of oil legislation. A proud American tradition has been the insistence on freedom of competition, on equality of economic opportunity, on a policy of laissez faire. Nowhere has this principle been given wider application than in the mineral industry. The mineral field has been open to all comers, and the job of mineral exploitation has naturally attracted daring and independent spirits. The laws governing conditions of discovery and development, as well as the anti- trust laws, have been devised to foster the spirit of private initiative. The result has been the building of a mineral industry on a scale never before approximated anywhere in the world. The impetus thus gained, the methods, the technique, the financial resources, have been projected be- yond our boundaries and have made the American mineral industry the purveyor to the world for many essential commodities and first in the exploitation of the world's minerals. Our habits of individual self-reliance and success are deeply ingrained, and there is hardly an individual in the entire mineral field who does not instinctively recoil fro111 the extension of collective control, whether public or private.

G. D. Kneip, Jr., and J. 0. Betterton, Jr. (Union Carbide & Carbon Corp., Oak Ridge, Tenn.)—The authors have contributed to the theory of zone melting by considering the effects of the solidification of the final zone on the distribution curves for the finite length bar. However, they do not consider in sufficient detail the restrictions imposed by the particular metals involved. Eq. 4 has the analytical solution which is equivalent to Pfann's' equation for normal solidification of the final zone. For distribution coefficients less than one, it is apparent from this form of the equation that, as the solidification approaches completion, the concentration attains extremely large values which are inconsistent with the density of physical materials. The necessary restrictions then are that the solute concentration cannot exceed the density of the alloy, or more frequently, the solubility limit in the solid phase. Secondly, the distribution coefficient cannot be constant from 0 to 100 pet solute unless the liquidus and solidus coincide over this whole region. It would thus be more correct to impose limits on the solubility such as would be indicated by a typical eutectic diagram. Furthermore, in this case the assumption that the distribution coefficient remains constant is more likely to be realized. The solidification proceeds according to Pfann's' expression until the concentration reaches the maximum solubility in the solid phasc. At this point, the concentration changes abruptly to the eutectic composition and remains at this value for the duration of the solidification. The width of the flat region, and the back reflection of this effect into the concentration curve on subsequent passes, depends upon the ratio of the eutectic concentration to the original concentration, upon the distribution coefficient, and upon the number of passes. Similar effects on the concentration curves in the first zone length would be expected in many systems for which the distribution coefficient is greater than one, and where the maximum solubility is not too much larger than the original concentration. The discussers agree with the authors that the assumption that the liquid is uniform in concentration should be considered with caution. Kneip and Better-ton' have shown, however, that in floating zone refining of zirconium, using induction heating, the distribution of iron agrees with theory which assumes a uniform liquid composition. Hence, in this case, the experimentally realized distribution coefficient agrees with the present phase diagram within the experimental uncertainty. L. Burris, Jr., C. H. Stockman, and I. G. Various X ray diffraction techniques have been developed for determining orientations of crystals. Transmission and back-reflection Laue methods1,2,3 in particular have been found to be very useful. In many applications, however, a need still exists for a simplification of the details of analysis so that orientations can be determined more rapidly, and operators with little or no training in crystallography can be easily instructed in the necessary procedures. Filling this need in part is a system of analysis that has been in use for several years in the Metals Section of the Laboratory, General Electric Co., Pittsfield, Mass. This method is an extension of the one of Majima and Togino,4 which uses fifty-five indexed standard transmission Lauemams to cover the entire range of crystal orientations. Greater rapidity in determining the orientation of a crystal is achieved by using a slightly larger set of standard Lauegrams and by systematizing the steps followed. This system of analysis in its present form constitutes the subject matter of the present paper. Although the method uses transmission X ray Laue patterns, many of the operations are applicable to the analysis of back-reflection Lauegrams. Very briefly the method is based on the fact that Bragg and azimuthal angles for two or more identified Laue diffraction spots completely determine the orientation of a crystal, and standard Laue photographs of the Majima and Togino type provide a ready means for identifying Laue spots. After a preliminary analysis, which consists of identifying the pattern in terms of one of the standard patterns, a correctly marked Lauegram is selected to carry out the final analysis. From measured Bragg and azimuthal angles, the normals (poles) of the reflecting planes for the selected Laue spots are located on a stereographic projection and the orient.at.ion of the crystal determined (in terms of the positions of cube poles for example) by a few additional operations on a \I1ulff net. The actual procedure followed will be illustrated in detail after a brief treatment or X ray problems connected with orientation determinations and a discussion of useful principles and techniques. X Ray and Plotting Problems RELATIVE ADVANTAGES OF BACK-REFLECTION AND TRANSMISSION LAUE DIFFRACTION METHODS In the back-reflection Laue method it is easy to make a direct measurement of the tilt of a zone of Laue spots. Specimen thickness also is generally no problem. In the case of thin specimens, however, the time of exposure is less for the transmission Laue method. For example, with silicon ferrite this advantage holds up to a thickness of 0.6 mm if tungsten radiation at 40 kv peak voltage is used. Furthermore, the transmission photograph represents the entire thickness of the crystal whereas the back-reflection picture represents only a surface layer (a thickness of less than 0.05 mm for silicon ferrite), the deeper layers supplying a negligible amount to the diffraction pattern. If a crystal is distorted, the transmission Laue pattern gives more information particularly with regard to the orientation of the crystal and the overall amount of spread in orientation. Finally a 3 1/4 X 4 in. film suffices for transmission photograms; a 4 X 5 in. or 5 X 7 in. film with a central hole is needed for back-reflection patterns Not only is the manipulation of film easier because of the size of film, but

IN the parlance of Hollywood, it was a super-colossal meeting. In the more restrained language of engineers, the Institute's 75th Anniversary Celebration attracted the largest crowd ever; was the longest Annual Meeting ever held, occupying a full week; had more important papers, more important people, more of an international flavor, and more glamour than ever before. And in the minds of those who came to the big city from the wide open spaces, one other record should be mentioned: for those not on an expense account, it was the most expensive affair ever staged by the Institute! To state the attendance down to the last digit for a meeting such as this is impossible. The total names registered on cards, plus those who attended the Annual Banquet but were not otherwise registered, came to 3149. But a few were registered twice, and probably a still larger few did not register at all, but just dropped in for a session or two in which they were interested. It would appear that 3200 would be about as close an estimate of attendance as could be made, and that is some 300 more than came to the biggest Annual Meeting of the past-in 1944. A considerable number of members brought their wives, but most were delegates at large.

The work of Klier and Lyman1 on the bainite reaction has led to the full description of this reaction for medium-carbon low-alloy steels. Certain experimental data reported by Klier and Lyman appear, however, to be improbable of obtaining in very high-carbon steels. The study herein reported consists of an analysis of the transformation characteristics of a 3 per cent chromium, I per cent carbon steel by means of X-ray and metallographic methods. From the results obtained it is concluded that the bainite reaction in this steel is more complicated than that reported by Klier and Lyman for the low-carbon low-alloy steels. Henever, the mechanism of bainite formation in this steel appears to be essentially the same as proposed for the low-carbon low-alloy steels with the modification that the first volumes to transform are carbon-rich rather than carbon-poor. Experimental Procedure The analysis of the steel studied was: Cr, 2.89; C, 1.02; Mn, 0.33; Si, o.35; S, 0.012; P, 0.020. The stock was received from the Carpenter Steel Co. in rolled bars. Specimen Preparation Specimens were austenitized at 1200°C. (2192°F.) for 25 min. in purified nitrogen. The resultant A.S.T.M. austenite grain size was 0-1. Isothermal transformation was allowed by quenching the specimens into liquid metal baths controlled to 5°C. at 540°C. (1004°F.) and above, and to 2°C. at 490°C. (914°f.) and below. Following the desired degree of transformation all specimens were water quenched. Metallographic Examination Specimens 1/4 in. round by 1/4 in. were used for nietallographic examination. Etch-ants used were Vilella's reagent (I gram picric acid, 10 ml. hydrochloric acid to make 100 ml. ethyl alcohol solution) and alkalinc sodium picratc (electrolytic). Vilella's reagent was effective in revealing all microconstitucnts, while the alkaline sodium picrate developed the carbon-rich structures or carbides only. X-ray Examination Two X-ray techniques were used—the Debye-Scherrer method and a back-reflection method. 'The small specimens necessary for the Debye-Scherrer method were austenitized and then allowed to transform, or were cut from the larger metallographic specimens. The metallographic specimens were used for the back-reflection X-ray analysis. When it was desirable to determine the structure of the carbide present, sliver specimens were electrolytically etched to develop a carbide coating, then were exposed in the cameras. This technique was frequently necessary to allow positive identification of the carbide.

THERE was once a time when a practical oil man would appraise or buy a producing property on the basis of from $200 to $500 per barrel of average daily settled production. Curtailment-has, for the present at least, caused a virtual abandonment of the "barrel -of settled production" as a yardstick of, oil property value and in its place has come the "barrel of allowable production," which, although an artificial thing, is nevertheless now the principal factor governing the rate of ?pay out? or investment return. The potential production of a well, settled or otherwise, is of less importance in determining the present worth of a well than is the rate at which it may be produced. Speaking only of true potential for the moment, it is obvious that of two similar wells having the same potential, the one having the highest rate of allowable production would be worth proportionately more than the one of lesser allowable. The discount factor for deferred return and risk can easily vary the present values of the two wells by as much as 20 per cent when allowable rates are not greatly different.

The twelfth meeting of the Boston Section was held at the Engineers' Club, 2 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, on Monday evening, May 5, 1913, fifteen members and three guests being present. The meeting was called to order by Vice-Chairman Albert Sauveur, who introduced the speaker of the evening, Utley Wedge, of Ardmore, Pa. Mr. Wedge read his paper on the chloridizing roasting of copper ores, which he illustrated with a stereopticon, and which will be published in full by the Institute. After Mr. Wedge had closed his paper, which was received with great interest by all the members, the following discussion took place: Professor Hofman said that iron was formerly thought to ho essential to the Henderson process, but that it is not absolutely essential. Mr.Wedge said that, as far as he. knew, the presence of some sulphates was an abso¬lute necessity, and that line ores can be worked satisfactorily, although lime has an effect on the subsequent leaching. He added that the low fuel consumption of the latest Wedge furnace is a result of direct application of the combustion gases to the ore. Ten per cent. of fuel was needed with the muffle furnace. By direct firing he has been able to reduce the fuel needed to from 2 to 4 per cent. In the latest types of furnaces the gases from the upper hearth are not used. There is doubtless some temperature at which the loss. from copper chloride volatilization becomes serious, but in practice on Rio Tinto ores troublesome losses are not experienced. The copper apparently does not become volatile at. the temperatures where we would expect that it would. There are doubtless ores in which there would be serious danger from losses from this source. The latest furnaces do not use the high temperatures that were needed in the former single-hearth Wedge furnaces.

THE most important non-metallic mineral industries from a tonnage standpoint are those that are allied with the construction industries and are engaged in handling sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, cement, lime and gypsum. The greatest problem facing a number of these industries at this time is over-production. They have experienced un- usual, and in some instances phenomenal, growth during recent years, stinlulated by extensive highway and building construction, but in some localities expansion of producing plants has far outstripped industrial needs. The cement industry is operating at about two- thirds capacity. Over-production tends toward price- cutting and unprofitable and interrupted operation, involving maintenance expenses for idle plants and disorganization of working forces. This condition has encouraged active efforts toward reducing production costs by the introduction of labor-saving equipment. Also, there is a tendency toward the location of manufacturing plants, wherever possible, near the centers of consumption rather than at points of production of raw materials. In order to reduce overhead expense, or for other reasons, many consolidations of companies into larger units have taken place. An economic study of conditions in these industries is highly desirable. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has taken one step forward in this direction in the issuance of Economic Paper 7, entitled "Economics of New Sand and Gravel Developments." Briefly, this report emphasizes the importance of making a thorough study of all the economic factors involved before undertaking new .enterprises.

A CLEAR understanding of the factors that deter-mine the consumption of zinc metal is essential to a proper survey of the future of the industry and the relation of the several producing districts. With a view of explaining a sound basis for the consider-ation of some of the problems facing the zinc-mining industry of the Oklahoma-Kansas and Missouri district some of these factors are here set out. The zinc industry of the United States furnishes metal for three major uses, viz.: (1) zinking iron and steel (galvanizing); (2) brass making; (3) sheet rolling. Other important uses are for lead desilverization, the manufacture of castings, including die castings, and the manufacture of zinc oxide by the French process, which consists in burning spelter. The use of zinc for galvanizing comprises the coating of sheets, tubes, wire and shaped products, the latter ranging from chains to buckets. The brass-making industry may be sub-divided into manufacture of red brass, yellow brass and white brass, the percentage of zinc in these products being roughly 30, 40 and 80 respectively. The use of white brass is relatively a new thing and it may attain considerable proportions as a substitute for yellow brass. A QUARTER of a century ago, a pessimistic Belgian financier in conversation with the founder of the Belgian Congo, that great ruler, Leopold II, emphasized the danger to the colony should the synthesis of rubber be discovered. The king replied, "I do not worry. The Congo has had its ivory period; it now has its rubber period. Tomorrow it will have that of its mineral wealth; eventually that of agricultural products." That "tomorrow" arrived some twenty years ago. Through her mines the Belgian Congo has survived the present depression, and her mines for the next decade will safeguard her. The Congo, in turn. is the surest foundation industrially and financially of Belgium itself. In few, if any, political units is mining as dominant as in the Belgian Congo. In 1930, 1931 and 1932 mineral products represented respectively 67.9 per cent. 70.5 per cent and 59.3 per cent, of the total exports. In 1933 for each white person in the colony, there was produced about $1,675 worth of gold, diamonds, copper, tin ore and minor mineral products and in 1930 the per capita production, notwithstanding the larger population, was almost $2,000.

Radiotracers were demonstrated to be of considerable value in a study of the interaction of dithiophosphate with galena. The interaction had characteristics of both chemisorption and chemical reaction, being complex because of the nature of the galena surface. Sorption was rapid and markedly reversible, and flotation occurred at relatively small amounts of dithiophosphate sorbed.

WAGES in the United States, in spite of the wage freeze, have increased materially. Overtime payments have become standard practice in almost all industries. Now efforts are being made to place wages on an annual basis, and if this is adopted, it will result in an increase in the cost of production. Organized labor today is more powerful than ever before; union membership is large and steadily increasing, and in many instances membership in the union is a prerequisite to employment. The treasuries of many unions are strong as a result of the large membership and full employment. The unions, therefore, today are in a much better position than ever before to carry on long strikes. Politically, too, the unions are more powerful today than they ever were. On the basis of their strength, one may expect that some of the demands that the labor unions will make in the not distant future will be granted. It is, therefore, quite evident that before long, particularly when the curtailment in war production reaches about 40 per cent, this country will be confronted with a serious labor problem.

PROCESSES employing controlled atmospheres in the heat-treatment of metals and alloys are now well established on an industrial scale, and the general principles involved and the advantages to be gained in the use of the technique have received considerable publicity over a period of years. During this time the greatest emphasis has been on the establishment of the process in industry, the main effort being devoted to development work on various types of atmospheres, their useful fields of application and the design of suitable heat-treatment furnaces in which they are to be used. The various types of controlled atmospheres are fairly well standardized, but there still remains a considerable field for the investigation of related problems, in connection with both the gas-generating equipment and the surface chemistry of the heat-treatment of metals, especially in complex controlled atmospheres. This paper describes certain investigations of this nature that were carried out in England up to 1939. The development of processes employing controlled atmospheres has been associated to a very large extent with the heat-treatment of steels, both because of the major importance of steel in industry and the many diverse and difficult problems of surface chemistry involved when steels of such a wide range of composition are heated in the presence of active gases Controlled atmospheres such as dissociated and burnt ammonia or charcoal gas are used in the heat-treatment of low-carbon and high-carbon steels, but from certain points of view a suitable atmosphere generated by the partial combustion of city gas is to be preferred. Both the ammonia derivatives are comparatively expensive, and even if the burnt ammonia is regenerated, thereby reducing operating costs, the capital expenditure of the gas plant may make it prohibitive for the smaller type of furnace installation. Charcoal-gas generators are not without their operating difficulties: especially those associated with the quality of the charcoal, clinker formation and the removal of carbon dust from the generated gas. City gas has the advantage of being comparatively cheap and "on tap" in most if not all industrial centers. The use of raw city gas as a protective atmosphere in the heat-treatment of steels has been described,1 but it presents certain difficulties because of its complex composition and its explosive nature when mixed with air. These factors, together with the tendency toward sooting at elevated temperatures, arising mainly from the hydrocarbon gases present, all militate against its use as a protective atmosphere in industrial furnaces. Specimens of' Hastelloy X-280, a low-cobalt version of the solid-solution- hardened nickel-base alloy Hastelloy X, were given a series of thermomechanical treatttzents. They were then Lensile-tested at room temperature and 1350°F. The Microstructures of the specimens tested at 1350°F were studied by electron Microscopy. Microscopy showed that dislocation tangling, caused by the cold working, mas still in evidence after aging-for 24 hr to temperatures as high as 1550oF. (Cr, Mo)23 C6, (Fe, Mo)6 C'. as well us an unidentifiable phase precipitale due to the combination of the thermomechanical treatments and subsequent tensile strain. The room -temperature and 1350°F tensile properties show a general increase ill strength and decreccse in ductility with increusing cold-work level. This is due to the dislocation taangling-. PerLurbatiot~s to this general trend occur- due to solid-solution weakening at the higher cold-work levels as a direct result of the preciplitation reactions. THE requirements for corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength place nickel-base alloys among the more promising materials for advanced nuclear reactor applications. However, when these alloys are irradiated at service temperatures, they generally suffer severe embrittlement'" and reduction in rupture life.3 Certain experimental treatments resulted in improvements in the tensile and stress-rupture properties of Hastelloy X-280, a solution-hardened nickel-base alloy.' To provide a basis for understanding these improvements, unirradiated tensile specimens were examined by electron microscopy. The results are reported in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Material. Hastelloy X-280, a low-cobalt version of Hastelloy X, is a member of the solution-hardened class of nickel-base alloys. The Hastelloy X-280 was obtained from 4- and 1-in: thick plates in the mill -annealed condition. Table I gives the chemical composition of the material as reported by the National Spectrographic Laboratories. ~x~erimental Treatments. Plates of suitable size, 12 by 3 by 1 in., or by + in., were cut under a water jet from the stock material and examined ultrasonic -ally for homogeneity of grain size and absence of voids. The acceptable plates were solution-treated at 2150°Ffor 1 hr and air-cooled. These plates were then reduced in thickness by cold rolling 0, 10, 15: or 20 pct along the original rolling direction. The plates were machined into buttonhead tensile specimens with a gage diameter of 0.125 in., with a gage length of 1.125 in., and with their tensile axes parallel to the rolling direction. The specimens were examined for quality of finish with a penetrant dye, ultra son ically checked for voids, and finally given a dimensional tolerance check with an optical comparator. The acceptable specimens were aged for 24 hr at either 1000" or 1500 F and air-cooled. These specimens were then held at 540°F in a water loop for approximately 18 days to qualify as controls for similar specimens irradiated under the same conditions of time, temperature, water chemistry, and flow rate. Table U summarizes the treatments. These treatments were investigated to establish whether prior precipitation and stabilization of carbide phases at strain sites within the matrix could reduce the amount of carbides available for precipitation at grain boundaries during service. Tensile-Test Conditions. Specimens were tested to fracture at room temperature or 1350 F in air on an Instron tensile-testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.05 in. per min. The time for the furnace to reach equilibrium at 1350°F was approximately 30 min; soak time prior to testing was 15 min; and test duration was approximately 5 min.

The lattice parameter of 99.999 pct pure Ag rtlas redetevnzined and found to be az5 = 4.08626 5 0.000041 with the vefnzctiotz correction included); the expatzsion coejjicient between 10° and 65°C was 18.73 X10-6°C-1. The lattice paratneter increased upon solution indium in silver in good agrement with other authors. The solid-solubility limit around room temperature was at 20.4 wt pct of in, which suggests that the high-temperature solubility (at about 689°C) determined by other authors is too low. The expansion coejficient of si1ver increases with the itzcrease of indium content between 10° and 65° C from, 18.73 (In = 0) to 20.9 x 10-6°C-1 (In = 20.4 pct), being only very slightly influenced by small amounts of indium. The expansion coefficents of all solid solutions increarsed strongly with temperature, reaching values > 27 x 10- 6 800°C. ACCORDING to the Ag-In diagram,' the solubility of indium in silver (the a phase) extends to about 18 pct by weight at room temperature. However, there has been only one investigation of the solubility limit by X-ray methods—that of Weibke and Eggers.2 Hume-Rothery, Lewin, and Reynolds measured only the lattice parameters of Ag-In solid solutions3 as did Owen and Roberts4 and Adler and Wagner.' The thermal expansivity of four solid solutions was determined by Owen and Roberts4 in a temperature range between 25" and 300°C. In view of the limited amount of work on Ag-In solid solutions, it seemed appropriate to redeter-mine the lattice parameters and the room-temperature solid-solubility limit, to find the exact expansion coefficients of the solid solutions at about room temperature (between 10° and 60°C) and the expansivity up to 800°C, and finally to derive the thermal-expansion coefficients for any alloy within the solid-solubility region.
