Condusions. From the work on aluminum powder, the following general con clusions can bc drawn: I. The physical properties of aluminum compacts, such as density. strength and ductility, increase with increasing pressure, up to the practicable pressure limits. 2. Good properties ill aluminum con pacts can be secured only by the use of high pressures, because it is neccssary to rupture the refractory oxide film on aluminum powder. 3. Considerable softening of the specimens occurs upon sintering. regardlers of the pressure used. General Conclusions 1. For relatively short-time sintering. molding pressure is a very important factor in the final physical properties of the sintered specimens. 2. The effect of pressure. is difierent for each metal, so that few general rules can be drawn that would apply to all metals. 3. In many cases, fur a particular metal powder and sintering temperature there is a critical pressure at which the best physical properties can be obtained. 4. The principles of cold work and in nealing and their effect on grain structure applied to massive metal also holds true for sintered metals. 5. Several articles have recently been published discussing the conditions necessary for accurate measurements of temperatures in the open-hearth steel furnace. In the course of a study of refractories service conditions in steel furnaces, the present writers have taken temperatures in several open-hearth shops in the Pittsburgh district. The conclusions, as to conditions necessary for accurate measurements of temperature, are somewhat at variance with those of other investigators. The subject is closely connected both with the close control of steel-making and the prevention of overheating of the silica refractories used in roofs and walls. It is becoming more and more important to obtain furnace temperatures of fairly definitely known accuracy. At present, the most useful instrument for such measurements is the disappearing-filament type of optical pyrometer. This method of measurement has formed the basis of most other discussions on the subject and was also used by the writers. Previous Investigations In 1916, Burgess' made perhaps the first systematic series of measurements in steel furnaces. The emissivity figures of 0.40 for liquid steel and of 0.53 to 0.65 for liquid slags had been determined by the Bureau of Standards and were used by Burgess in this work. These correction factors are still being used and are regarded as fairly accurate, so that the tapping and teeming temperatures on metal streams given by Burgess should be very nearly correct. Most of his temperatures of furnace roofs and slag surfaces were taken while flames were present in the furnaces and include a few roof temperatures above 1700' C. (3100' F.).

I PROPOSE in this paper to treat of the chimney merely as a heat engine, as one of the devices resorted to in practice for the conversion of heat into mechanical work. For the sake of simplicity and clearness in the discussion, let us consider the subject in its simplest form. Conceive a chamber, heated from without, in free communicatioH at one end with the external atmosphere, and at the other end opening into a vertical chimney. Let the. cross-section of the chamber be so great, relatively to that of the chimney, that we can neglect the actual energy of the air passing through the chamber. We will neglect, also, all passive resistances to the passage of the air. We will assume that the cross-section of the chimney is constant, and that the air in passing through it neither gains nor loses heat. The following symbols will be employed in the discussion : Po = the normal pressure of the atmosphere, which, it is assumed, is the pressure existing at the level of the chamber. Po = 10332.96 kilograms per square meter. P2 = the pressure of the external atmosphere at the top of the chimney. To = the, absolute temperature of melting ice by the centigrade scale. This is assumed to be the temperature of the external air at the level of the chamber. To = 273°. T2 =the absolute temperature of the air as it passes from the chamber to the chimney. T3 =the absolute temperature of the air as it issues from the chimney. to, t2, t3 are the temperatures, as recorded on the centigrade ther¬mometer, corresponding to the absolute temperatures To, T2, T3 re-spectively to = 0° C. Monotonous flood planes flanked either side of the road as we drove in the embassy car from the airport to downtown Seoul. We crossed the brown waters of the Hann River, meandering over mud flats. A great, gnarled tree bore beautiful fall colors of gold. "That is a Ginko Tree, the oldest living fossil, probably a hundred million years old;" said Jean W. Pressler. Compared to other cities of the Far East, the traffic in and around Seoul was sedate. Few motorcycles or bicycles, and little superfluous horn tooting. "This is the best season in Korea. We have long beautiful springs and falls," said Pressler, chief of the mining branch of USAID, and he continued with a briefing on the country.

INTRODUCTION MANY different shapes of drill bits are in use with hammer drills, but little definite information is available whereby to judge which one of these shapes is the best. The following investigation was undertaken in order to determine what effect, if any, the shape of the cutting edge has on the cutting speed and wearing qualities of drill bits. The bits tested were those in common use, namely, the 4-point or cross bit, the 6-point bit, the Z bit and the "Carr" bit. The rock in which the tests were made was the red granite from southeast Missouri. It is a coarse crystalline granite containing an unusually large amount of quartz and is extremely hard, and on account of its uniform texture is admirably adapted to this work. While tests in other rocks might show somewhat different results, nevertheless it is the opinion of the authors that the relative cutting quality inherent in the shape of the bits would be the same in all rocks. Other qualities, such as mudding freely, freedom from fitchering, etc., might make one bit more desirable than another in softer rocks. DESCRIPTION OF BITS TESTED The 4-point bits were the usual shaped bits commonly made on the Leyner sharpener with 14° taper on the wings and a 90° angle between cutting edges. Some tests were run at 85 lb. pressure with a 4-point bit made with a 5° taper on the wings. This was made by using the Carr bit die. The 6-point bits were the usual shaped hits made on, the Leyner sharpener. The Carr bits were made with a 5° taper and an angle of 100° between cutting edges.

INTRODUCTION The honor of being the recipient of the Mining Society's Daniel C. Jackling Award for 1966 imposes on me the responsibility to search for the subject that I would be best qualified to discuss. It seems that my experience in the mineral industry — nearly 15 years in private and 30 years in public employment — should uniquely qualify me to comment upon the relationships between the mining industry, mineral engineering as a profession, and government, and the changing economic, technologic, political and social changes that dictate their relationships. Such conditions, the increasing knowledge of the world mineral resource base, the greater demands of an expanding population with a rising standard of living, shall be evaluated with respect to our profession — mineral engineering. In all of these forty or so years, I have been in close touch with many phases of the mineral and energy resource industries, especially those of the United States. Particularly during the past 10 years, I have had a ringside seat at the "goings on" in Washington. During all of this period I have observed and analyzed many of the problems of the industry and its relations with the government. During the past few years, I have had increased opportunity for doing research and have found a need to learn something about the mathematical techniques that are undergoing such a revival since electronic computers were developed. One of these techniques is multivariate analysis, which is a system for correlating a large number of complex variables. By applying this technique to the seemingly chaotic present-day situation, there emerges a course of steady improvement in the minerals resource industries that wars, depressions, and political strife have failed to obstruct for long. In short, I advocate a need for new concepts in mineral engineering to cope with the changes, pos- sibly adding many more specialized areas on one end of the spectrum, and broad engineer-generalist approaches at the other. The meeting place shall be where the intricate mineral resource problems at the frontier of knowledge merge into the socio-techno-logical problems of the world. HISTORICAL INVOLVEMENT OF GOVERNMENT IN MINERAL RESOURCE PROBLEMS Involvement of government in mineral resource problems undoubtedly is as old as government itself. But passage of the Mining Act of 1866, superseded by the Act of 1872, was the first major entry of our Federal Government into the problems of mining. Passage of the law was necessary to resolve many conflicting claims and disputes in mining. The General Mining Law of 1872 and the Mineral Leasing Laws of 1920 apply to millions of acres of public lands and to certain privately owned land on which the mineral rights have been reserved to the Federal Government. The extensive involvement of government in the mineral industry business today often comes as a shock to the mineral engineer who has begun to climb the ladder to the top in his company. He is often poorly prepared to cope with the situation and becomes frustrated and even hostile. Better knowledge of the role of government perhaps would ease his situation. In our political system, private industry is responsible for producing minerals. To make certain that the production is adequate for a peace-time economy, and to guarantee the Nation's security in an emergency, the Federal Government finds it expedient to develop policy and engage in regulatory, educational, and research activities. A few examples will illustrate the varied role of government in relation to mineral problems. In varying degrees many agencies of the Executive Branch of Government have responsibilities that influence the functioning of the mineral and energy industries. In addition, of course, Congress, the Judiciary, and State and local governments exercise great influence. Morrison (Chairman, Dept. of Mining Engineering and Applied Geophysics, McGill University, Montreal, Que., Canada) - The discing of drill core has been a recognized pressure phenomenon for many years but only recently has an interest been taken in the mechanism involved. The work of Jaeger and Cook is referred to in the text. The authors have now advanced the study to establish, within certain loading limitations, a direct relationship between axial and radial stress at failure. This is an important contribution. In mines generally, where pressure conditions result in the spalling of openings, the faces of drifts and crosscuts, on scaling, usually show a concavity with respect to the opening very similar to the face of the drill hole after the separation of the stub. The same holds for shaft sinks. This suggests a similarity between the mechanism of the discing of core and that of the spalling of an opening, under pressure, to develop a more stable outline. The latter, commonly regarded as shear, is the most conspicuous type of failure observed in

The irradiation-induced densification of pyrolytic carbon has been shown to take place by a simple first-order rate process. The values of the densification constant, kd, for isotropic carbons are 1.0 x 10-22, 1.4 X 10-22 and 2.8 X 10-22 (nut)-1 at irradiation temperatures of 520o, 670°, and 1000oC, respectively. The apparent activation energy obtained from the temperature dependence of kd for isotropic carbons is about 0.2 ev. Estimates of the maximum stresses that develop in isotropic carbons owing to shrinkage onto an unyielding support show that stresses in excess of 15,000 psi may be avoided during irradiatian at 600" and 1000°C if the initial coating density is kept above 1.5 and 1.9 g per cu cw, respectively. If a carbon coating on an unyielding support is not completely isotropic, stresses may continue to build up at high neutron exposures after densification is complete because of continued anisotropic distortion. Stresses in excess of 15,000 psi from this source may be avoided during irradiation at 1000°C if' the Bacon anisotropy factor is kept below 1.3. A variety of applications of carbon and graphite in nuclear technology has stimulated numerous studies of the effect of neutron irradiation on these materials One of the most interesting problems associated with the use of carbons and graphites in the high fast neutron fluxes of nuclear reactors arises as a consequence of the neutron-induced dimensional changes that occur during irradiation. Energetic neutrons displace car- bon atoms from their lattice positions; and, depending on the temperature, the interstitials and vacancies produced migrate to form clusters, recombine, or are annihilated at dislocations or crystallite boundaries. The competition of various sinks for the point defects results in structure-sensitive bulk-dimensional changes that vary with temperature in a complicated way. This paper deals with the neutron-induced dimensional changes in turbostratic carbons that are being used as coatings on nuclear fuel particles. Details of the structure of these carbons and the variations of their structure with deposition conditions have been reported.'-3 It has been shown in previous work that the neutron-

The trend in gas well testing has been to rely more on the early-time flow data of drawdown and buildup tests than on stabilized flow tests. The stabilized testing methods often are not adequate for complicated modern gas reservoirs because many of these reservoirs have extremely low permeabilities and the transient flow period of a well test can last for days or weeks. It has become common to augment the flow capacity of gas wells by hydraulically fracturing their producing formations. In deep reservoirs the induced fractures are generally vertical and tend to follow a single plane of weakness. The presence of a vertical fracture at the wellbore complicates the transient flow behavior of a low permeability gas well. The flow is further complicated when turbulence occurs near the wellbore. Russell and Truittl published transient drawdown solutions for vertically-fractured liquid wells. They developed methods of drawdown and buildup testing utilizing these solutions, which were based on numerical simulation. Clark2 applied the basic Russell-Truitt solutions to analyze fractured water injection wells by falloff tests. Field examples were given to substantiate the method of analysis. The Russell-Truitt solutions and well testing methods can be extended to gas well flow. Millheim and Cichowicz3 presented the drawdown equations for *Now with Scientific Software Corp., Denver. ideal gas flow, including the effects of formation damage and turbulence. Two actual field cases were presented, both of which exhibited extensive fractures and turbulent flow. For the pressure range of these well tests, the use of ideal gas equations was acceptable. These field cases were significant in being the first published data showing the occurrence of turbulence in fractured gas wells. We, also, observed such cases in practice. Our purpose here is to extend the theory of fractured gas well testing to the flow of real gases. To determine the effects of wellbore storage and turbulence on well test interpretation, we developed a finite-difference model to simulate well test conditions. Since gas wells usually are widely spaced and have high compressibility, the emphasis has been put on the early transient behavior before the effects of the outer boundary are noticeable at the wellbore. The Mathematical Model The geometry of our mathematical model is similar to that used by Prats.4 The well is centered in a circular uniform reservoir. A vertical fracture of infinite flow capacity penetrates the formation and passes through the wellbore. The wellbore itself is not important. Fig. 1 shows a sketch of the problem. THE subject of the constitution of copper-iron mattes has received considerable attention in recent years by Keller,1 Bolles,2 Hofman,3 and Gibb and Philp.4 Still more recently Friedrich, Röntgen, Wiedmann, Heyn and Bauer, and Leroux have published, in some instances, elaborate researches on the various systems of the sulphides, and the sulphides and their respective metals, which enter into the constitution of mattes, and have added very greatly to the knowledge of the subject. The work of Friedrich has been especially fruitful. But to date no effort has been made to correlate the data obtained in the latter researches and apply then to the study of the product called " matte," which is made in such large quantities by copper and lead-smelters. In this paper we propose to determine, by metallographic and chemical means, the constitution of copper-iron and copper-lead mattes in the light of the recent data above mentioned. We do not discuss copper-nickel mattes or speisses (artificial arsenides). The paper is divided into three sections I. A review and discussion of the various binary systems of the metallic, sulphides, and the binary systems of various metals and their respective sulphides entering into the constitution of mattes; also a discussion of the physical and chemical properties of these sulphides. II. A description of the results obtained from the chemical and metallographic examinations of the samples of copper-iron and copper-lead-iron matte obtained from various plants.

Levine has concluded that prismatic slip in titanium is controlled by two distinct thermally activated processes in the temperature ranges O° to 220°K and 220" to 300°K. We feel that his evidence is not convincing. He has drawn a curve through the plot of activation volume u* vs temperature T with a break at 22WK, Fig. 2. We believe that considering the possible experimental error apd the fact that there are only four points between 4° and 196°K, one could be justified to represent these points by the smooth curve we show as a solid line in Fig. 12. Levine believes that (8rf/aT)+ is discontinuous at 220°K, but he hints that he recognizes the possible doubt. We doubt seriously that the results shown in Fig. 1 indicate a discontinuity at 220°K. Certainly if he were justified in drawing a straight line through only four points on Fig. 2, we are even more justified in drawing straight lines through the seven points between 77" and 297°K on Figs. 1 and 3, because a straight line touches all seven of his circles. If his measurements of t were so precise that his decision to draw two curves in Fig. 3 is valid, then the experimental technique is deserving of further mention. We have drawn a smooth curve through the results in Fig. 3 and used this and the curve in Fig. 12 to obtain the values of shown in Fig. 13. Finding continuous is a contradiction of Fig. 4, which deserves comment itself. Levine obtained the solid circles in Fig. 4 using Fig. 2 and a smooth curve through the points shown in Fig. 3. We have replotted these solid circles in Fig. 14. We submit that there is no basis for his two straight lines (dashed in Fig. 14), and therefore have superimposed the curve that we believe is indicated. Certainly, there is reasonable doubt that a discontinuity in dH/dT exists at 220°K, even when one accepts Fig, 2. Furthermore, if one draws the straight lines indicated by least-squares treatments of the results presented as open circles in Fig. 4, their intersection is at about 196°K, not at 220°K as shown. Thus the alleged agreement between Figs. 3 and 4 with respect to "break" temperatures is not apparent. In Fig. 9, Levine has drawn a straight line very much different from the one indicated by a least-squares treatment. Obviously, he has done this because he recognized that H = 0 when T = 0. In this paper, a new technique developed to analyze two-dimensional nonhomogeneous models is described. A simple three-layered medium with a circular hole centrally located in the intermediate layer is considered. The layered sheet is loaded uniaxially perpendicular to the stratification. The Young's modulus of the intermediate layer is lower than that of the outer layers. The stress distribution around the circular hole in a stratified medium is significantly different when compared to the case of a continuous homogeneous medium. The distribution depends upon the ratio of the height of the intermediate layer and the hole diameter. A comparison of stress distribution and procedures for preparation and testing of the model are given. The potential of the technique is outlined. In the process of applying the techniques of stress analysis to problems of rock mechanics, the recent discernible trend has been to postulate highly idealized models of physical situations. As new techniques have been developed, more complicated models have been conceived to simulate mote accurately the physical environment to which the analysis results are eventually applied. In this investigation, a new technique is developed to analyze two-dimensional nonhomogeneous models. The technique is used to determine the stress concentration around a circular hole in a soft material overlain and underlain by a hard material. In mining practice, such situations arise commonly in coal deposits and frequently in bedded or vein-type metallic mineral deposits. DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM A plate, consisting of three layers with a circular hole in the intermediate layer, is loaded uniaxially, Fig. 1. The variable in the experimental investigation is the height of the intermediate layer, H. The diameter of the hole, D, is kept constant. The stress concentration factors around the periphery of the hole, for various values of H/D, are evaluated using the technique of photoelasticity, Table I. TECHNIQUE OF EXPLORATION Photoelastic analyses of composite models have hitherto been limited to the study of lap and butt joints between glued metals and dissimilar materials.1-3 In mining, Haber and Oudenhoven used composite models to study the stress distribution around a circular hole in two-layered media and the behavior of elastic liners in shallow underground openings.4-5 They used the stress freezing technique devised by Dally et a1.6 The procedure used in this investigation is outlined below: Casting of Layer A: Flat sheets of plastic were cast in a silicon-coated mold using Araldite 502 with hardener 951 in the ratio of 100:8 by weight. Because of drilling, completion, and workover practices, the permeability around a wellbore generally is different from the permeability of the formation. The zone with the altered permeability is called "skin" and its effect on the pressure or flow behavior of the well is called "skin effect". Hawkinsl has shown that the radius and the permeability of this zone are related to the skin by: If the permeability in the skin zone is less than that of the formation, the skin is positive; if it is more than that of the formation, the skin is negative. If the two permeabilities are equal, s is zero; that is, there is no skin. Van Everdingen2 and Hurst3 have given mathematical solutions to the case of a zone of reduced permeability around the wellbore. This skin effect is illustrated in Fig. 1. They treat the positive skin as a zone of reduced permeability of infinitesimal thickness around the wellbore. When applied to a well with negative skin, however, their solutions lead to the calculated flowing well pressure which is smaller than the formation pressure, i.e., an injection situation. This is a physical contradiction. In this paper, it is shown that this mathematical difficulty can be overcome by assuming an effective wellbore radius larger than the actual wellbore. Existing solutions2"4 are modified to include the effect of an enlarged wellbore radius, and thus enable the engineer to deal with negative as well as positive skins. The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization.

Magnetic separation of iron ores is one of the fastest-growing segments of the minerals beneficiation industry. The tonnage of taconite ores processed annually by magnetic separation will, in a few years, reach 100 million. Magnetic separation occupies an attractive position in the field of ore beneficiation. It is a simple yet effective method, used for some 150 years and steadily growing more important. This type of beneficiation orginated in 1792, when William Ful-larton was issued a British patent covering the separation of iron ore by magnetic attraction. What is magnetism, and why are some materials capable of being magnetized and others not The study involves many unknowns, and even a partial answer to these questions would be a dissertation in solid state physics and perhaps other fields of science. But the last two decades have revealed basic facts as to why certain materials are magnetic and what happens to them when they are magnetized. Some of the newer studies in solid state physics have developed a theory that can be applied to studies of magnetism. It is claimed that magnetism stems fundamentally from the spin of electrons in atoms that tend to go in pairs, spinning in opposite directions. The atom as a whole can act as a magnet only when there is an imbalance of electronic spin. Whenever an atom has an odd number of electrons, therefore, this imbalance exists. This neutralizing effect explains why a piece of material that contains atomic magnets is not necessarily magnetic. The physicists tell us that iron is composed of many small magnetized regions called domains, which consist individually of millions of atoms. The piece of iron becomes magnetized when an external force lines up these domains in the same direction. Fundamental data developed by physicists working in fields far removed from minerals beneficiation are now available for developing better magnetic separators for ore processing. More Data Needed on Magnetic Properties of Minerals: There is less information on magnetic properties of minerals than there is for certain aspects of magnetic separator design. When the data on magnetic properties is available, it is often directed toward the study of powders for tape recorders and other highly scientific endeavors that are of little use to the beneficiation engineer. W. R. Crane's table of tractive forces, published in 1902, is still a guide in the study of magnetic minerals. Bits of other information regarding electrostatic conductivity, dielectric constant values, and permeability of various minerals have also appeared but are of small practical value in magnetic separation of ore. It is extremely important to obtain pure mineral specimens for making investigations and to record results that may be of use in studies of magnetic processes. Reference to the large volume of data developed by those concerned with analysis and design of permanent magnets soon reveals that these people have extensively evaluated the effect of various impurities on magnetic properties. Much of the science of the ferrite industry is based upon spinel-type structures which are varied by substitution of selected elements or even subtraction of elements, leaving vacant sites in the space lattice. Magnetic separators are used to beneficiate a wide variety of industrial minerals. In this application the relatively large volumes of nonmagnetics are usually the commercial products. RECENT studies of creep have made it apparent that plastic deforma-tion may occur in metals under stresses less than the elastic limit as deter-mined from short-time tests. In summarizing conclusions drawn from creep tests by various investigators, Tapsell1 said: "It is evident that if a material has a true elastic range, the elastic limit must represent the maximum stress for no creep." The presence of a. definite elastic limit, represented in single crystals by a critical or threshold shearing stress, is claimed by Schmid2, Elam3 and others who have investigated the plastic deformation of single crystals. However, this "law of critical shearing stress" was deter-mined2 from short-time tests, and the measurement of the deformation was made with apparatus primarily designed to observe large amounts of plastic deformation, not to detect elastic changes. Experimental data recently obtained with highly sensitive instru-ments by A. W. Hanson4 on zinc and by Podaschowsky5 on rock salt indicate that the elastic range in single crystals is considerably narrower than formerly was supposed. Moreover, a theoretical possibility of permanent deformation, under the influence of even the smallest shear stress in single crystals above a certain temperature (Td), has been developed by G. I. Taylor6. This evidence seemed to warrant an examination of the elastic limit in large single crystals by means of creep tests. The first metal chosen for examination was zinc.

The rubber-sleeve core barrel was developed to improve core recovery from unconsolidated sands, where it is most difficult to obtain cores with conventional barrels. The use of a rubber-sleeve core retainer, together with other departures from clsual design, has required a considerable amount of testing to prove its op-erability. Tests run in shallow experimental holes and in drilling wells in the U. S. and Vemzuela have, to a large extent, proved the operation of the barrel. Internal mechanism troubles, such as sandbinding of the sleeve, have been largely overcome. Cores have been recovered from completely unconsolidated sands where conventional coring has almost been abandoned because of poor recovery. In addition to retaining the core until brought to the surface, the barrel gives a "packaged-ar-cut" core, which is coilverzient for handling and transportatiorz. In the initial work, drag blade cutters, roller cutters, and tungsten carbide insert cutters were usrd for cutting unconsolidated sands. Further bit head development is presently being conducted using diamond heads in unconsolidated sands where shaler, hard sands, and limestones are encountered in adjacent formations. Thir work should render the barrel capable of cratting and recovering most types of formations, possibly including broken and frac- tured fornlations. This development is being carried on in cooperation with a diamond bit manufacturer. INTRODUCTIO N For many years the oil industry has needed greater recovery of cores from unconsolidated formations. Conventional equipment has been used to core unconsolidated sands with little success. Specifically, a core barrel was needed which would recover unconsolidated sands in a condition that would give useful reservoir information. DEVELOPMENT OF 'THE RUBBER-SLEEVE CORE BARREL Basic Requirements of Unconsolidated Sand Corino The basic need was defined as a core barrel that would obtain a continuous unconsolidated core with sand grains in place as deposited in the formation. A preliminary survey of coring equipment and search of the literature pointed out the weaknesses of conventional core barrels. Laboratory tests using unconsolidated sand in a metal tube simulated actual sand movement into the core barrel during conventional coring. In conventional barrels the core sometimes crumbles and bridges, or fails under compressive column action, becomes oversize, and wedges against the walls of the inner barrel. The core barrel requirements established by the surveys and preliminary tests are as follows. 1. The core should be held to- gether as it is cut so it cannot crumble and bridge against the walls of the coring tool, care being taken not to permit damage from fluid circulation. 2. The core should be continuously supported as it is cut so it will not have to support itself in compression. 3. The core should be packaged in the barrel to retain an undisturbed condition during the trip out of the well. The packaging should be such that the core can be removed from the barrel and shipped to the core analysis laboratory without physical disturbance or alteration of fluid content by exposure to the atmosphere. Operation of the Rubber-Sleeve Core Barrel The rubber-sleeve core barrel (Fig. 1) meets the basic requirements for the recovery of unconsolidated sands.

One portion is due entirely to the characteristics of the ball mill and the tonnage of new feed impressed on the ball mill. This portion of the circulating load in no way is to be blamed on the characteristics of the classifier and is all composed of oversize. Consider, for illustration, that this portion of the circulating load is handled in the A division of the classifier, assuming that the classifier is divided longitudinally into two divisions by an imaginary line. Because the classifier does not usually make a perfect separation of the undersize, a certain portion of the total circulating load is to be directly blamed on the efficiency of the classifier. Let this portion of the circulating load be considered as being handled in the B division of the classifier. Now if the classifier is operating perfectly (100 per cent efficient), the width due to the B division becomes zero and correspondingly the efficiency of the classifier diminishes as B becomes wider in proportion to A. REFERENCES Under the heading "Development System for Block Caving under Severe Conditions" a report was presented to this congress regarding a magnesite mine using block caving for several years. On account of the experience gathered in this mine and the results of far reaching exchange of experience, as well as under due consideration of the international literature it is tried to systematically list and briefly discuss the following factors that have to be considered for development and draw control of block caving. 1. NATURAL FACTORS It is self evident that this implies all those circumstances given by nature and which cannot be altered by man. Any mining activity is subjected to those and the success is depending on how far technology can be adjusted to those conditions. Geology Deposits of considerable thickness with rather steeply inclined flat-faced contacts are optimal for block caving. While vertically there is practically no limitation- for the deposit, theoretically, the smallest horizontal basis apt for operating block caving is the minimum area necessary to get the rock to completely cave in by undercutting and drawing. Practically, only consider- ably bigger main dimensions are found, mainly because of technical factors (machinery and equipment) and economic factors (cost ratio of exploration vs. development, danger of contamination).
