INTRODUCTION The Washington Metro, a rapid transit system that will serve the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland, has been under construction for about two years. Construction of the Metro by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority involves a large amount of cut and cover, soil tunnel, and rock tunnel construction. To aid initial construction and improve future designs, performance observations were undertaken on tunnels in the initial construction phase. The University of Illinois Department of Civil Engineering was engaged to carry out a comprehensive program of field observations and measurements for this purpose. One part of the program was on the first soft ground tunnel constructed in the system. The tunnel is a 2200-ft (670 m) twin-bore section, designated Contract A-2, in downtown Washington. Two objectives of this program were to determine the relationship of construction procedure to settlements and to observe the pattern of soil movement around the tunnel as an aid in evaluating underpinning criteria for nearby structures. A test section, consisting t three instrument lines located across the tunnel path, was established prior to mining in Lafayette Park to measure in detail both vertical and lateral soil displacements as the tunnel was mined through the section. The site was selected because it is free from surface structures and access for installation and reading of the instruments was convenient. Load and distortion measurements on the lining were also made within the test section; observations of construction procedure were maintained throughout construction.

Much attention in controlling blast vibrations has been centred on the probability of causing damage to structures in the area adjacent to where blasting is carried out. In most cases these structures are residential properties and the effect of the vibrations on the occupiers has not been studied to any great extent. This paper looks at the sources of disturbance caused by blasting and their psychological effect. A comparison of ground vibration levels for compliance is examined within the framework of structural and human response.

At the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., reports are prepared from time to time on results of washability studies of coal from important beds in the Southern Appalachian region. The investigations that provide the material for these reports are made by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the mine operators. The principal objective of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data to aid in determining the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's reserves, particularly of coking coals. Such information is also important from the standpoint of conservation, because it facilitates the selection of preparation methods that will yield an acceptable product with a minimum loss of coal to the rejects.

The eastern Washington— Idaho clay region stretches along the northeast margin of the Columbia basin for 150 mil es. The three better known and developed clay areas are Clayton, Wash., (2 miles north of Spokane); Mica, Wash., (10 miles southeast of Spokane); and Moscow-Deary-Bovill, Latah County, Idaho (about 80 to 90 miles southeast of Spokane) see Fig. 1. Clays from the eastern Washington— Idaho clay area have been mined for more than 50 years. At present Mica, Washington deposits are used by the Gladding—McBean & Co. to make a variety of bricks and ceramic products and Latah County, Idaho clays are used by the A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. to make refractories. The Anaconda Co. made an intensive investigation of the clay deposits in the northeastern Washington-!daho area in 1919 to determine the existence of a supply of raw materials from which alumina could be made. The greater part of the work, which included systematic drilling and shaft sinking, was concentrated at Mica, Wash. This was part of a research project carrted on by the Anaconda Metallurgical Research Dept. under the direction of Frederick Laist and F. Frick and it was terminated in 4920. V. D. Perry, Vice President and Chief Geologist for The Anaconda Co., in 1952 assigned the writer to make a preliminary study of clay and other potential sources of alumina ore in the Pacific Northwest with particular emphasis on those deposits which might be of future importance to The Anaconda Co9s. then new aluminurri plant at Columbia Falls, Mont.

Uranium miners have been shown to develop lung cancer in direct proportion to the time of exposure in the mine and the concentration of radioactivity (cumulative working level).1 Radon gas is continually evolved from the uranium ore, but because of its shoe half-life, 3.82 days, it is soon decomposed into particulate daughter products, which along with the dust in the mine, become deposited in the miners' lungs. At present, massive ventilation is the only effective method of reducing the radioactivity concentration in the mines. However, the Bureau of Mines is evaluating the possibility of using coatings on the mine wall that will have sufficiently low permeability to radon that the gas will decompose into the particulate daughter products before it can permeate the coating. Permanently trapped in the coating, the daughter products would be prevented from dispersing in the mine atmosphere. Lawrence Livermore Laboratory was asked to aid in this investigation. The direct determination of radon permeability is more difficult than that of the other noble gases because of the short half-life of the gas and radioactive contamination of the apparatus. We felt that it should be possible to estimate radon permeation coefficients from other noble gas permeation coefficients. It was noted that the log of the diffusion constants for helium, neon, argon, and krypton, as reported by Meares2,3 plotted to a straight line-against the square of-the gas molecularddia meter. The log of the permeation coefficients also plotted to a straight line against the square of the gas molecular diameter. Thus, by determining the permeation coefficients of such gases as argon and krypton through various films and coatings, it appeared likely that radon permeation coefficients could be estimated. In addition we felt it should be possible to find some relationship between polymer structure and he noble gas permeation coefficient that would aid in the selection of coatings materials as radon barriers.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory investigations made by the Bureau c! Mines on the recovery of mercury from caustic sulfide solutions by aluminum precipitation and by electrodeposition. Statistical methods were used to design the experiments and evaluate the resulting data. Precipitation studies demonstrated tint metallic mercury could be recovered from mercury sulfide-sodium sulfide solutions with aluminum. Other metals and their salts and aluminum, salts precipitated only black mercury sulfide. Over 95 percent of the mercury was precipitated from solutions prepared with reagent-grade chemicals and from cinnabar leach solutions. Two equivalents of aluminum were required to obtain 95 percent precipitation of the mercury. Under optimum conditions 1 gram of aluminum precipitated from 4 to 7 grams of mercury; the excess Aluminum was recovered for reuse. The effects of time and temperature on the precipitation of mercury were minor when compared with the effects of mercury concentration and aluminum equivalents. The particle size of aluminum had no significant effect over the ranges studied. When aluminum was used as a precipitant, the mercury concentration in solution was reduced to below 1.0 grams per liter. Adding arsenic and antimony sulfides to the mercury solution resulted in their coprecipitation with the mercury when the aluminum was added From 95 to 99 percent of both the arsenic and antimony were precipitated as metal, which amalgamated with the mercury.

Minerals have been critical to human society from the earliest and their use has been intertwined with the development of civilization. In the Western World, the mining, processing and extractive metallurgy associated with ores was first described in detail by Agricola in the 16th century. He considered these collective activities to be the most necessary and the most profitable of professions, and wrote, "without doubt, none of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of the metals is not less ancient; in fact they are at least equal and coeval, for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. In truth, in all works of agriculture, as in the other arts, implements are used which are made from metals, or which could not be made without the use of metals; for this reason the metals are of the greatest necessity to man." Ours is still a materials-dependent society that relies heavily on minerals for raw materials. Today our dependence on minerals is exceptionally great. To meet the need for fuel and non-fuel minerals in a representative year, in the United States alone, about one billion tons of coal and 2.7 billion tons of ore are mined. These mineral products are essential for fertilizers, for construction materials, metals and alloys, for manufacturing household and industrial items, for transportation, and for the generation of electric power. It is instructive to consider the diversity of uses found in our society for a single mineral product - silver, for example. Experts believe that in the past 5000 years we have mined about a million tons, or 31.9 billion troy ounces of silver. In 1988, 133 million troy ounces of silver were used in the Unites States. Most of the silver used was for techno- logical, medicinal and industrial purposes, Table 1. X-ray films, for example, carry comparatively large amounts of silver to lessen patient's radiation exposure. Silver does not prevent tooth decay, but each year about two million troy ounces of silver is used for dental work in the United States. In small quantities it is used in medicine. No metal - not even copper conducts heat and electricity so efficiently as silver. Silver wires lace solar cells, and silver oxide batteries power hearing aids, calculators, submarines and satellites. Hardened with tungsten or molybdenum, miniature discs of silver pass current from wire to wire in cars, telephones and computers. A dish- washer timer alone may have 50 such electrical contacts, which open and close without excessive heat or friction. Silver is an important component of solar reflectors, since no other material reflects light so well or uniformly. In our personal lives, silver remains in high esteem to adorn our tables, provide precious objects and jewelry. In many parts of the world, silver in the form of coins, jewelry and bullion is used for financial independence and security against the vagaries of paper currency. In India, silver is used in its purest form as thin foils to decorate sweets and other edibles. It is obvious that this mineral product, silver, is of great value and utility in our society. Minerals and Environment The benefits of minerals do not come without problems. Much of the silver, for example, lies locked up in copper, lead-zinc or precious metal ores; to extract it creates vast quantities of waste material. On the average, in order to recover one ounce of silver about a quarter ton of ore must be mined. To meet the world's annual demand for silver, approximately 100 million tons of waste is generated every Year. The problem with silver is repeated with all minerals. Conversion of mineral ores into usable materials necessitates the generation of large quantities of waste products that create tremendous disposal problems. In addition to waste material discarded during mining, wastes may be generated during processing as gases, liquids or solids that must be subsequently converted into forms more acceptable for disposal. Associated with the handling, treatment and management of waste products are a number of environmental problems. Environmental problems are not new to the minerals industry. In order to reveal the correlation between the fundamental sintering characteristics of iron ores and their real sintering behaviours, a comprehensive evaluation index is proposed based on the measurement of four high temperature indexes, ie assimilation temperature, liquid phase bonding strength, liquid fluidity and calcium ferrite formation percentage, and the sintering pot tests of single ore fines and their blends. The results show that both the lowest assimilation temperature and liquid fluidity of ore blends appear to be the linear superposition of those of single iron ores except for the liquid phase bonding strength and calcium ferrite formation percentage. Furthermore, the tumble index of the sinter product obtained from blended iron ores also corresponds to a linear superposition of that of single ores, but not for the solid fuel rate and productivity. The comprehensive strength index YT exhibits a credible linear positive correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes, whereas the comprehensive productivity index YP possesses a lower correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes. The comprehensive strength index YT developed can predict the tumble index of the sinter product quite well, but the comprehensive productivity index YP cannot be used to evaluate the productivity effectively.CITATION:Zhu, D Q, Xue, Y X, Pan, J and Shi, B J, 2017. Mineral fillers have been defined as inert materials that are included in a composition for some useful purpose. Because this definition and the scope of this review are not specific- indeed, exceptions abound-accurate total statistics are unavailable. One source estimates the total production in the United States in 1971 at 5 million tons valued at $200 million, averaging $40.00 per ton. Included are a broad group of minerals-asbestos, barite, bentonite, calcium carbonate, clays, diatomite, feldspar, micas, silica, talc. Additional references will be made to synthetic mineral-derived fillers such as aluminum hydrate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and pyrogenic and precipitated silicas and silicates. A section on related uses at the end of this chapter covers absorbents and filters. Mineral fillers can be included in compounds to accomplish a variety of final results. Hardness, brittleness, impact strength, compressive strength, softening point, fire resistance, surface smoothness, electrical conductivity, and a host of other physical characteristics may be modified by the inclusion of fillers. These effects are the result of properties of the fillers, including chemical activity, hardness, particle size, shape and distribution, surface structure, color, density, and refractive index. To facilitate an overview of the mineral filler industry, this chapter will review the general usage of fillers, the inherent characteristics that intensify their utilization, and similarly their manufactured characteristics. Major using industries will then be examined in detail. Specific information on deposits and processing for industrial minerals will be found in the appropriate commodity chapter. The chart in Table 1, updated from the 3rd edition of Industrial Rocks and Minerals, illustrates the major mineral fillers (both natural and manufactured) and their more important end uses.

"The PFK FeNi Smelter was re-commissioned by Solway Resources in 2002, ending a long period of economic decline in the adjacent town. In 2009 Hatch was retained to design, supply and install a custom furnace crucible that would accommodate a capacity increase from 34 MW to 40 MW and increase campaign life through binding and cooling technologies, as part of ongoing improvement efforts. The involvement of PFK personnel was critical to the successful integration of the new furnace technology with the existing process and operational practice. The furnace upgrade project was completed in 18 months during 2010 – 2011. Since start-up, the furnace has exceeded production expectations, operating successfully at 42 MW.INTRODUCTIONAfter ceasing operations in the 1990’s, the Pobuzhsky Ferronickel Combine (PFK), located in central Ukraine, was stripped of useful equipment and deteriorated while dormant. The surrounding town experienced a period of economic decline throughout the 1990’s. Solway Industries purchased the complex in 2002 and began a systematic incremental program to re-commission the smelter using both local expertise and specialists from other parts of the former Soviet Union. This led to the re-birth of PFK as a successful toll-smelting complex, and a renaissance for the surrounding economy.As part of the continuing improvement program, PFK approached Hatch in 2009 to study the possibility of a capacity expansion from 34 MW to 40 MW. It was decided, based on the results of the study, to design and install a custom furnace crucible integrating the unique PFK FeNi process with modern Hatch furnace technology. This novel approach had many benefits, including: maximum re-use of existing furnace components (off-gas, feed equipment and transformers), minimal impact on upstream and downstream equipment and building structure, and the retention of a familiar operating regime. The latter was a key factor in the success of the project, as it allowed the extensive operating expertise of the PFK staff to remain highly relevant to the upgraded furnace. This led to minimized capital investment, a rapid start-up and no significant operational challenges switching over to the new equipment incorporating Hatch furnace technology."

The roof of the Sishen cave is being mined in order to exploit 6.8Mt of high grade ore. The cavity is filled with quartzite backfill in order to support the roof in the event of collapse. The cave dips at approximately 37o, is 260m along dip and 70m along strike and has a total volume of 261,391m3. GPS and optical monitoring techniques were attempted to detect subsidence but proved to be impractical. The GroundProbe Slope Stability Radar (SSR) uses differential interferometry to measure sub millimetre movement in a rock face. The SSR was applied in a non production situation and detected subsidences of 38mm/day before visual signs of instability were detected. The rate of deformation detected was slowing as a result of the roof coming to rest on underlying backfill. Monitoring during production drilling detected a sudden subsidence of 18.6mm/hour which resulted in the evacuation of personnel from the area. Further inspection of data showed that the rate of deformation was slowing and production was allowed to continue without further incident. The SSR has helped dispel the fears of workers and has proven that subsidence can be accurately measured and delineated with the SSR.

A method is derived for obtaining the distribution of sphere diameters and plate thicknesses (or pearlite spacings) from size distribution functions obtained along randomly oriented lines. The method described offers several advantages over existing methods. IT is often of interest to measure not only the average particle size but also the distribution in sizes of particles dispersed in an opaque material, such as an alloy. Particles of a single size will exhibit a range of apparent sizes on the plane of polish. "The Main zone of the Clarence Stream gold deposit is hosted by a shear zone adjacent to the Saint George batholith in southwestern New Brunswick. The mineralization history relates to progressive deformation in the shear zone and the intrusion of the Magaguadavic granodiorite.Of three phases of deformation that have affected the area (D1-D3), D1 is not observed in the Clarence Stream shear zone. Two suites of igneous rocks intrude the shear zone: post-D2, pre-D3 gabbro; and granitic dikes, which crosscut the gabbros. Granitic dikes show a diverse range of relationships to D3 features, from pre-syn-D3 mylonitic fabrics in transposed and highly deformed enclaves, to nondeformed and entirely discordant dikes (post-D3).A variety of veins occur within this shear zone. Zoisite-bearing and later, crosscutting epidote-bearing veins are preserved as relics in quartz-mylonites, and predate quartz veins that host gold mineralization. The epidote-bearing veins are associated with pseudotachylitic cataclasite dikes, consistent with transient brittle failure during ductile deformation.Deformation relates to right-lateral strike-slip motion across the shear zone, and subhorizontal and near-vertical stretching lineations imply transpression. A late (late- or post-D3) dip-slip phase of motion is also apparent, and cooling followed a metamorphic peak early in D2-D3 history. Deformation of the shear zone, and more localized transient brittle failure, provided the permeability for fluid movement and vein emplacement. This scenario is similar to the findings of other studies, in which geochemical, tracer isotopic, and age-dating (U/Pb, 40Ar/39Ar) results suggest that the adjacent Magaguadavic granodiorite provided heat and metals. Des veines contenant de la zoisite ainsi que des veines d’épidote sécantes plus tardives, lesquelles sont préservées comme reliquats dans les mylonites à quartz et sont plus vieilles que les veines de quartz contenant la minéralisation aurifère. Les veines d’épidote sont associées à des dykes de catacalasite à texture de pseudotachylite, compatibles avec une rupture cassante épisodique durant la déformation ductile.La déformation résulte d’un mouvement décrochant dextre le long de la zone de cisaillement et les linéations d’étirement subhorizontales et quasi-verticales impliquent de la transpression. Une phase tardive (tardi- ou post-D3) de mouvement selon le pendage est aussi apparente, et le refroidissement succède à un pic métamorphique tôt dans l’histoire D2-D3. La déformation de la zone de cisaillement et la rupture cassante épisodique ont fourni la perméabilité nécessaire au mouvement des fluides et à la mise en place des veines. Current practice for monitoring static pile load tests commonly consists of measuring load and displacement at the top of a pile. This is typically accomplished by monitoring dial gauge movements, line pressure of a hydraulic jacking system, and electronic load cells on occasion. While this testing approach provides useful information for one boundary condition (the top of the pile), a system that measures movement and/or strain along the entire length of the pile can provide additional useful data that can be used to refine pile design. Automated data acquisition systems provide the essential ingredient that can integrate these types of sophisticated instrumentation devices into a standard pile load test program in a cost effective way. This paper provides a general overview of pile testing instrumentation and describes a newly developed chain of instrumentation modules that can be embedded in a pile to gather additional testing information. The new system can measure forces and movements within the test pile synchronously with measurements at the pile top, and the direct application of this system to axial and lateral pile testing is illustrated. This is particularly relevant to the design of ACIP and drilled displacement piles since determination of the reinforcement cage length is important from the standpoint of both seismic design and foundation cost.

"Koudiat Aïcha is a small Zn-Pb-Cu deposit, enclosed in the Visean Sarhlef volcano-sedimentary series of the Moroccan Hercynian Jebilet massif. Base metal mineralization is located between a basal unit consisting of black argillite with arenite intercalations, and an upper unit composed of black argillite with locally fossiliferous calcareous units towards the top. Paraconcordant gabbro sills are present in both the upper and basal units, and the enclosing strata. Three successive phases of deformation linked to regional deformation overprint the volcano-sedimentary rocks and gabbros, as well as the sulfide mineralization.The mineral deposit includes several lenses of massive to semimassive pyrrhotite, 1 to 20 m thick, with a large halo of disseminated sulfide veinlets and sulfide nodules within a zone of intense chlorite alteration in the footwall. The ore mineralogy consists of massive to semimassive pyrrhotite with lesser amounts of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, pyrite, and stannite.Lead isotope results (206Pb/204Pb averaging 18.27) suggest that the metals of the Koudiat Aïcha deposit are derived from the volcano-sedimentary host rocks. Sulfur isotopes also indicate a volcano-sedimentary origin, with bacterial reduction of sulfate (d34SCDT = -7.5‰ to -10.5‰). The conditions for sulfide meta-morphic equilibration range from 250° to 330°C (sphalerite and chlorite geothermometers). The gabbroic sills could have been a local heat source for hydrothermal circulation. Based on these geological and mineralogical features, a Besshi-type model seems appropriate for the genesis of the Koudiat Aïcha mineralization.Koudiat Aïcha est un petit dépôt de Zn-Pb-Cu, encaissé dans la série volcano-sédimentaire Viséenne de Sarhlef dans le massif Hercynien de Jebilet au Maroc. Des sills de gabbro paraconcordants sont présent à la fois dans les unités basale et supérieure, ainsi que dans les strates environnantes. Trois phases de déformation successives associées a la déformation régionale superposent leurs effets sur les roches volcano-sédimentaires, les gabbros, ainsi que la minéralisation sulfurée. Ce gîte comprend plusieurs lentilles de pyrrhotite massive a semimassive de 1 a 20 m d’épaisseur au sein d’un large halo de veinules de sulfures disséminés et en nodules au sein d’une zone intensément chloritisée dans le mur du gisement. Le minerai consiste en pyrrhotite massive à semimassive avec des quantités subordonnées de sphalérite, de chalcopyrite, d’arsénopyrite, de galène, de pyrite, et de stannite. Les résultats de l’analyse des isotopes du plomb (206Pb/204Pb moyen de 18.27) suggèrent que les métaux du gîte Koudiat Aïcha proviennent des roches volcano-sédimentaires encaissantes. Les isotopes du souf¬fre indiquent eux-aussi une origine volcano-sédimentaire, impliquant la réduction bactérienne des sulfates (d34SCDT = -7.5‰ et -10.5‰). L’équilibration métamorphique des sulfures s’est produite entre 250° et 330°C (géothermomètres à sphalérite et chlorite). Les sills de gabbro pourraient avoir été la source de chaleur locale responsable de la circulation hydrothermale. Sur la base de ces caractéristiques géologiques et minéralogiques, il semble approprié d’invoquer un modèle de type pour Besshi pour expliquer la genèse de la minéralisation de Koudiat Aïcha."

Ore-pass hazards are a significant safety problem in US underground metal mines. From 1975 to 1995, nearly 75% of injuries during pulling or freeing of ore-pass chutes were related to falls of broken rock or the use of hand tools. Risk assessment methods are being used to identify the most probable causes of ore-pass failures and analyse the factors that result in malfunctioning or safety reduction. Static and dynamic loads are being measured in the laboratory and by field testing, with data from test ore passes compared with mine data to characterise true system behaviour. Computer modelling using closed-form solutions, finite element analysis and a newly developed particle flow code are being use to predict loads from ore and waste flow and impact. Preliminary results indicate that dynamic impacts may be much less than expected, as a result of damping factors, normal and shear stiffness and mass frictional characteristics
