This concept paper is presented in the hope of raising the awareness of mankind on the necessity for its peaceful coexistence with nature. It is a food for thought. It takes compromise and sacrifice of people, who will have to learn to curb their greed and move toward a more organic form of prosperity. A nature-friendly sustainability is first step toward the protection of nature that is critical to the mutual survival of mankind and nature. People need the resources from the finite earth to survive and nature needs the prevention of human destruction in order to continue to regenerate and provide. The contemporary notion of sustainability is self-serving. It serves the interest of industry by camouflaging itself to look like nature?s protector. The ?sustainability? concept presented in this paper aims to extend the longevity of the utilization of the limited natural resources for many generations to come. It is an important, responsible first step in creating a healthy sustainability concept that, when implemented, extends the longevity of mankind by the most efficient use of the finite resources on this limited Planet Earth, all the while taking into consideration the increase in anthropogenic activities due to exponential human population growth. This new definition of ?sustainability? has completely different characteristics than its contemporary versions. Nature has its own destiny, rules and principles. Being a part of nature, human society depends on it for survival and must play by its rules and never the other way round as in its initial pretensions. Society should not try to humanize nature, but rather to respect the rule of the nature in a peaceful way of co-existence. When implemented, this new concept of sustainability aims to affect the designs of engineered structures and revolutionize the recovery methods and processing of natural resources, such as mineral resources in the most efficient manner. Finally, this paper intends to stimulate critical thinking and initiate serious discussions aiming at producing a general consensus for the best definition for human society to not only enrich, but to extend its existence. The Victorville cement plant of the Southwestern Portland Cement Co. is located about 1 mile from the city of Victorville, Calif. Two transcontinental railway systems, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and the Southern Pacific Railroad, afford shipped facilities. The plant is modern and well kept, as the officials, especially the higher operating officials, take pride in the appearance of the place. Dust has been practically eliminated by the installation of dust collectors and wet grinding. The plant has a rated capacity of 5,000 barrels of cement daily.

Unfortunate occurrences resulting in injuries, loss of life, and destruction of property by explosion, fire, and other mishaps during shaft sinking focused the attention of the Bureau of Mines on the need for safety standards For such operations. Information Circular 7810 was published to meet that need. The current revision updates and replaces IC 7810. Several States have some rules and regulations applicable to local conditions, and several Bureau publications (including some now out of print) cover the hazards that may be encountered in shaft sinking. Certain requirements of the Federal Mine Safety Code and Federal Coal Mine Safety Act may be applied, but there are no definite, uniform standards that will guide those desiring to sink a shaft safely and bring about uniform safety inspections.

Stress induced, gravity-assisted failure processes typically dominate long before stress levels approach the strength of the intact rock (at approximately smax > 0.4UCS where smax = 3s1 ? s3 and UCS is the Unconfined Compressive Strength of the intact rock (Martin et al. 1999)). Under these conditions, discontinuities typically become clamped and the failure process becomes brittle. This brittle failure process is dominated by new stress induced fractures growing subparallel to the excavation boundary. While it is possible to identify areas with the potential for brittle failure, for example, using the general assumption that brittle failure will occur in areas at right angles to the major principal stress (Hoek et al., 1995), when the threshold smax > 0.4UCS is reached in areas around the tunnel boundary, or elastic modelling and the Hoek-Brown brittle parameters proposed by Martin et al., (1999) (i.e. m? 0 and s ? 0.11), amongst others, recent observations discussed by Everitt & Lajtai (2004), and Kaiser (2005; 2006) suggest that brittle failure processes are enhanced when structural features such as joints, weakness zones, bedding planes or foliations are preferentially orientated around the excavation boundary creating stress raisers which in turn facilitate the stress-driven rock mass disintegration process (e.g., as illustrated by Everitt & Lajtai (2004) on Figure 1b). Such weaknesses induce stress heterogeneities that thus promote tensile-spalling failure processes (Diederichs 2000). The observations suggest that stress induced damage can occur ?prematurely? depending on the orientation of micro and macro structures in situations where the known stress conditions should not yet initiate brittle failure processes. In general, when structural features (micro and/or macro), especially foliations, are present in a rock mass, the strength is effectively reduced, largely due to tensile strength heterogeneity in areas depending on the orientation of the structural features with respect to the excavation boundary. As a result, stress induced damage could occur in areas not normally considered due to the influence of anisotropy (Figure 1).

Errors in ore reserve estimation can occur during drilling and sampling, sample preparation and analysis, geological logging and modelling, database construction, statistical or geostatistical evaluation, selection of economic parameters, selection of ore reserve method and assessment of mining constraints. Core sample recovery can be a major source of error, and it is proposed that the modelling of grade, metal accumulation and thickness should be accompanied by the modelling of core recovery (or core loss) so that for each ore block a weighted block recovery factor is obtained. This gives a good indicator of the reliability of a reserve estimate. It is suggested that a resource reliability rating (RRR) system be established to quantify what is meant by geological assurance and to combine this with an estimate of the precision of estimation as gained by geostatistical analysis. Proven and probable minable reserves would be those with an RRR better than 50% and a precision of estimation better than 20%

As part of its efforts to maximize process efficiency and decrease energy requirements in mineral processes, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated methods for beneficiating bastnäsite ores from Mountain Pass, Calif. The results of a bench-scale study on the flotation of bastnäsite ore are presented. Flotation at a pulp temperature of 40° to 45°C yielded a cleaner concentrate containing 58.7 pct RE203 at a rare-earth recovery of 67 pct. These results are comparable to those reported for the commercial beneficiation method in which the pulp is heated to boiling before flotation. An attempt was also made to recover a barite flotation concentrate from the bastnäsite rougher tailing. Concentrates containing only 70 pct barite were obtained.

El presente texto evalúa el relave minero de SIMSA con el objetivo de obtener un producto ecológico que pueda ser utilizado como mejorador cationico de suelos y restaure el equilibrio de los suelos ácidos de la selva peruana. Para ello, se desarrolló un trabajo a nivel de laboratorio, obteniéndose resultados satisfactorios. Posteriormente se pasó al nivel piloto donde a través de la experimentación se utilizó el relave en diferentes concentraciones para la producción agrícola y forestal, reafirmando los resultados en las mejoras de la productividad en suelos ácidos.

It is estimated that well over 20 million lb of chromium and 8 million lb of nickel, plus other metal values, are diverted annually to furnace dusts, mill scale, and contaminated swarfs in the domestic stainless and other specialty steelmaking industry. Little inroad has been made toward the in-plant recycling of these wastes to reclaim the metal values. The Bureau of Mines has devised a process for recovering about 90 pct of the chromium and molybdenum and well over 90 pct of the nickel and iron from stainless steelmaking furnace dusts, swarf, and mill scale. Other metals such as manganese are also recovered. Initial laboratory results were confirmed and expanded to include a wide variation of stainless steelmaking waste mixtures. Later experiments have included specialty steelmaking wastes other than from stainless steelmaking. Significantly, the ease of technology transfer has been demonstrated by a number of industrial-sized (19-ton) commercial electric furnace heats, in which the pelletized wastes represented some 10 to 20 pct of the furnace charge, replacing part of the normal scrap charge. Results of these successful large-scale trials are presented. Some information is also presented on incorporation into the pellets of chromium-bearing particulate wastes originating from other than steelmaking production. Cost evaluation indicates the process is economically attractive.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, Bindura, nickel The smelter at Bindura Nickel Corporation processes concentrates from its own mines and other external sources. Concentrates are dried, smelted, and converted to a desulphurised matte (leach alloy) for further processing at the refinery. The smelter comprises a drying plant, submerged arc electric furnace, electrostatic precipitator, and three Peirce-Smith type converters capable of treating 150 000 tonnes of concentrates per year. Concentrates are dried in a rotary coal-fired kiln, blended with fluxes, and smelted in a six-in-line submerged-arc 15MW electric furnace. Slag is tapped and granulated for disposal, and matte is tapped at regular intervals for blowing in Peirce-Smith converters. The paper details the 37-year history of the smelter, including furnace rebuilds and operating parameters as they have evolved in response to changing feed compositions. Special challenges, particularly relating to the treatment of high talc concentrates, are also described.

On the east side of Washington DC, the DC Water & Sewer Authority is developing a Facility Plan for the Anacostia River CSO Control Projects, including 8 to 12 miles of CSO storage/conveyance and flood relief tunnels and associated facilities. The project includes major technical and non-technical challenges, including: completion under a Federal Consent Decree schedule; large diameter (estimated 25 to 35 ft) soft ground tunnels and shafts up to 200 ft depth; operations without use of active flow control systems; and close coordination with several major public and private construction and development projects that are being advanced in the project area.

Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses owing to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rock fall hazard. Rock falls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings has an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orienting the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and off-setting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

The treatment of a hydrobiotite containing 0·64 per cent copper with various soluHons showed that a high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of the copper can be extracted under mild conditions (1 M BCI, 85°C) or withsaline solutions (20 per cent by weight NaCI or NH4F, 400°C). The latter results suggest that the copper is incorporated in the interstratified vermiculite of a vermicuHte-biotite mica and the solutions (NaCl and NH4F) which reacted with the vermiculite without attacking the biotite gave the highest extraction yields.In general, extraction yields with saline solutions increased with the temperature (between 100 and 400°C) and duration (3 or 6 days) of the treatment but were not appreciably affected by the initial pH of solutions.The results of RCI treatment especially may have a bearing on the hydrometallurgical treatment of refractory copper ores where copper is tied to gangue silicates.

This paper pays tribute to the pioneers in geomechanics, and addresses some of the most pressing issues of our time related to deep mining, and how to mitigate these issues. Solutions developed by our predecessors seem to have reached their limits as mines continue to go deeper. The International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) guidelines for rock mass characterization for excavation design also require re-thinking to reflect current knowledge and experience. Thus, a whole new approach is urgently required to increase mine safety and productivity. The paper will draw on the challenges and experiences in medicine and science that have been overcome through genuine collaboration, advances in technology, and impressive funding, which can be adopted to provide solutions to contemporary geomechanics challenges for increased safety and productivity as mines continue to go deeper.

Evidence is presented which confirms previous findings that models of solution strengthening depending solely on lattice parameter changes are incomplete. Direct evidence for the Suzuki interaction of chemical effects was obtained from alloys with constant lattice parameter, for which solution strengthening was nearly independent of temperature from 300° to 20°K. SOLUTION hardening principles have been reviewed recently by Parker and Hazlett.' In addition, the interactions of dislocations and solute atoms were reviewed by Cottrell.' It is not proposed to review this information again here, but to refer only to those details which are pertinent to the developments which have occurred since these papers were published. Literature Survey To set the stage, it has been known for some time that solid solutions are stronger than the pure parent metals, and that the strength increases with increasing amounts of alloying element. One of the most extensive earlier investigations was that of Lacy and Gensamer,3 who reported that the solid solution strengthening of iron is a power function of the composition, that the relative strengthening is a function of the solubility limit, and that the rate of strain hardening is a function of the amount of solution hardening. Thus, the slope of the plastic portion of the stress-strain curve increases with increasing yield strength. An approach to the development of principles resulted from work by Gulyeav,4 who reported that the strengthening effect of solid solution alloys is periodic in character when plotted as a function of the atomic number of the solute. A more quantitative approach was to relate the amount of solution hardening to the lattice parameter of a solid solution. This was done quite early by Norbury,5 and later by Brick, Martin, and Angier,6 Frye and Hume-Rothery,7 and French and Hibbard. This relationship is only approximate in character. The next development was to relate the amount of solution hardening to lattice stress, as proposed by Frye and co-workers.9 They calculated what they called ionic overlap from the lattice parameter changes represented as a change in volume, using Bridgman's hydrostatic compression equation. The resulting correlation was somewhat improved as compared to the simple correlation with lattice parameter. The next step was carried out by Dorn, Pietrow-sky, and Tietz,10 who suggested an effect of valence differences in addition to the effect of lattice parameter. Their proposed parameter shows flow stress as a single valued function of the concentration and a relationship involving these two atomic variables. In addition, they contributed new data on the temperature dependence of solution hardening which indicated that it was a strong function of temperature for aluminum alloys. Allen, Schofield, and Tate11 carried the valency effect even further by reporting data indicating that with a given solvent element the stress-strain curve is a function of electron density, entirely neglecting the size factor, which varied by a factor of two. ABSTRACT: A three dimensional constitutive law for swelling rock is presented. It can be applied to the osmotic swelling of mudstone as well as to the swelling of rocks containing anhydrite. It describes the development of time-dependent strains and stresses due to swelling considering elastic and viskoplastic behaviour. Furthermore an anisotropic swelling behaviour can be considered. This constitutive model was implemented within a numerical computation program according to the finite element method and calibrated on the basis of the results of measurements in the investigation drift of the Freudenstein tunnel which is completely located in the unleached Gypsum Keuper. A parameter combination could be found which results in a good agreement between numerical solutions and results of measurements. Therewith an analysis procedure which enables the design of tunnels in swelling rock is available. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird ein dreidimensionales Quellgesetz vorgestellt, das nach derzeitigem Kenntnisstand sowohl auf das osmotische Quellen von Tonsteinen als auch auf das Quellen anhydrithaltiger Ton- beziehungsweise Schluffsteine anwendbar ist. Das Stoffgesetz wurde in ein Finite-Elemente-Programm implementiert und anhand von Meßergebnissen des im unausgelaugten Gipskeuper liegenden Untersuchungsstollens des Freudensteintunnels kalibriert. Es ist gelungen, eine Kennwertkombination zu finden, mit der alle Meßergebnisse gut beschrieben werden können. Damit steht ein Bemessungsverfahren für Tunnel in quellfähigem Gebirge zur Verfügung. RÉSUMÉ: Dans l'article présent un loi de gonflement à trois dimensions est présenté, qui peut être appliqué aussi bien au gonflement osmotique de l'argile compactée q'au gonflement de l'argile compactée ou du limon compacté contenant de l'anhydrite. Le loi de comportement était implémenté dans un programme numérique d'éléments finis et calibré avec des résultats de mesures de la galerie de recherche du tunnel de Freudenstein, situé dans le Keuper de gypse non lessivé. On est réussi à trouver une combinaison de paramètres avec laquelle tous les résultats de mesures peuvent être bien décrits. Par ce moyen, une méthode de dimensionnement existe pour des tunnels dans de la roche capable de gonfler.
