In the hall in which the session was held there was exhibited a fine, full-length, life-size portrait of Dr. Rossiter W. Raymond, in 1871 Vice-President and acting President, in 1872, 1873 and 1874 the elected President, in 1876 and 1877 Vice-President, in 1883, by appointment of the Council, and for the last 24 years by annual election, Secretary, of the Institute. The Bureau of Mines has started an engineering study of oil recovery by miscible-phase displacement. As a preliminary part of the investigation a literature and patent study was made to prevent duplication of work already done, to become acquainted with those actively engaged in research of this type, and to learn where the recovery method has been attempted. This bibliography gives results of this study. The bibliography includes 254 references to U.S. and foreign patents and published literature relating to miscible-phase displacement processes of oil recovery. It is divided into the following sections: (1) U.S. patents, (2) foreign patents, (3) literature references, (4) author index, and (5) publication and source reference. The patents and literature references are listed alphabetically by author by intervals of years. References to February 1963 are included.

Understanding the interaction between rock bolts and underground rock movement is critical for safe and cost effective underground excavation design. Although early research on this subject involved a balance of theoretical analysis and field measurement, recent work has been heavily focused on analytical and numerical studies. This paper describes technologies that have the potential to redress the balance through instrumentation of rock bolts deployed under routine operating conditions in underground mines. Two new products are presented in this paper. Firstly the U-cell coupler is a load cell device that can be routinely coupled to the threaded end of a bolt prior to installation. It measures the ?series? load at the head of the bolt. Secondly, the d-REBAR involves an array of small-diameter, long-base length displacement sensors recessed into grooves along the entire length of the bolt. Both new instruments are interfaced with on-board digital signal conditioning and telemetry. Methodologies for the deployment of the new instrumentation and guidelines are presented for the interpretation of results based on data obtained from field trials. Successful field installations demonstrate the viability and practicality of these new technologies and, moreover, provide important insight in to rock bolt/rock mass interaction.

The 30th annual short course ?Grouting Fundamentals and Current Practice? was held at the Colorado School of Mines, June 22-26, 2009. The field demonstration portion of the course was conducted June 25, at Hayward Baker, Inc.?s yard in Broomfield, CO. The full-scale field demonstration annually presents many different types of drilling equipment being operated as well as various grouting methods being performed under different field conditions. As part of the field demonstration, the class is shown the proportioning, mixing, testing and injection of various cement grout mixes into sand columns under controlled and measured conditions. These sand column demonstrations have been conducted under controlled and measured conditions each year since 1999 as part of the short course. The sand column demonstrations were conducted prior to 1999, but with less quality control and minimal record keeping of the proportioning, mixing, testing, injection pressures and the final permeation results. The goal of the sand column demonstration is to show the students the effect of the water cement ratio and the use of admixture as well as the fineness of the cement, portland versus ultrafine, used has on the engineering properties of the grout and the grout?s vertical permeation through the sand. Test results for the demonstrations conducted in 1999 and for two separate demonstrations, one at the grout course and one at Geo Denver, conducted in 2000 were published in the 2001 proceedings of the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) (Henn et al. 2001). The test results for the 2002 and the 2003 demonstrations were published in the 2005 proceeding of the RETC (Henn et al. 2005).

Power Plant. The power for the metallurgical operations is supplied by the company's own power plant, which is centrally situated. Power is also supplied to Metal Manufactures Ltd. and Australian Fertilizers Ltd., both being adjacently situated to this company'sworks.The power supplied is direct current, 250 volts, and is obtained from direct-current generators coupled to turbines and to Belliss & Morcom triple expansion engines.The steam supply is obtained from Babcock & Wilcox water tubular boilers, the fuel used being drawn from the South Coast coal mines.Transport. - The works are connected by standard broad gauge railway to both the jetties and the Government railway. Two steam and three electric locomotives are employed in this service.In addition to its own requirements, transport is provided to Metal Manufactures Ltd. and Australian Fertilizers Ltd.The various operating departments are connected by a 2-ft. gauge railway operated by Jeffrey electric locomotives.Ore Storage and Sample Mill - These departments are connected by broad gauge line to the Government railway and jetties. All material which is railed or shipped to the works from the various centres is weighed, sampled and placed in the ore store, or outside gantries, before being treated.Since the whole of the material received is either purchased or treated on a toll charge, great care is necessary in the weighing and sampling of all the receipts.Assay Oflice--The assay office is divided into several laboratories, where analyses of the various purchased materials and works samples are carried out.

Extraction of copper from a chalcopyrite concentrate by means of a cupric chloride leach is described. Initially the concentrate is mixed with sulphur in a 9: 1 ratio, and heated to 350-400°C. This converts the chalcopyrite into more readily soluble sulphides, while the iron rejected from the chalcopyrite is transformed to pyrite, which is insoluble in the leach solution employed. A two-stage countercurrent leach using a leach solution of 1 M cupric chloride, 3.5 M sodium chloride, and 1 M hydrochloric acid extracts 98 per cent of the copper, if conducted at 105°C. Iron extraction is relatively low, the mole ratio of iron to copper extracted being 0.17, compared to 1.0 for unreacted chalcopyrite. After dissolution, copper can be recovered by electrolysis, cupric chloride leach solution being regenerated at the anode.Electrolytic power requirement is low, being approximately 0.5 kWh per kg of copper. The sulphur and, most of the iron entering as feed are rejected from the process in the form of pyrite, which remains in the leach residue.

Fluctuating metal prices, declining head grade, and increased operational costs are forcing many open pit mining companies to look to their balance sheets for significant cost reductions in order to remain competitive. Maintenance continues to represent a significant proportion of the total operating costs in the mining industry. Compared with the other major cost components of the mining process, very little effort has gone into maintenance optimization. The potential payoff from maintenance optimization on the cash cost of the commodity is enormous. A large percentage of these costs are incurred in unscheduled maintenance events, which typically cause serious disruptions to the production process. These maintenance-induced production losses can be a significant contributor to the overall operating costs. A structured proactive maintenance approach using the latest advances in technology can achieve dramatic cost reductions and productivity improvements. Remote condition monitoring systems are becoming increasingly commonplace and have the potential to identify problems prior to failure. Detection of equipment degradation prior to failure will enable repairs to be scheduled thereby reducing costs and interruptions to production. Remote condition monitoring technology has evolved rapidly in recent years, with a host of new tools becoming available to assist mine operators in improving their maintenance operations. These tools have capabilities such as remote real-time vital signs and performance monitoring, alarm/event handling, trend analysis, and maintenance workflow management. When these monitoring tools are used in conjunction with a mine management system, the vital signs data can be integrated and associated with maintenance history, predictive maintenance data, operational information, and geographical information. This integrated approach to the management of vital maintenance data will help shift the mobile equipment maintenance paradigm from reactive to proactive. This paper will introduce a proactive approach to the management of the maintenance process and the tools required to facilitate this process.

In open pit mine design, it is customary for geotechnical engineers to define the appropriate slope design angles within practical limits. The conventional approach to slope angle design is based on the comparison of calculated stability indicators, such as the factor of safety (FS) and the probability of failure (PF), with generic acceptability criteria not directly related to the impacts of failure. A major drawback of this type of approach is related to the difficulty of defining meaningful acceptability criteria. An alternative methodology of pit slope design is proposed, where the economic impacts of potential slope failures are calculated and used as the elements on which to apply the acceptability criteria for design. The methodology is based on the construction of a graph, referred to as a risk map, that relates the probability of exceeding the economic impact of slope failure to the magnitude of the impact measured in monetary terms. The process includes the analysis of a selected number of representative years of the mine plan and slope sections of the pit areas to define the required inputs for the construction of the risk map. The paper discusses the concepts used in interpreting the probability of slope failure, and describes the approach followed for the estimation of the economic impacts of slope failure and the construction of the risk map. Finally, the two main uses of the risk map are discussed, including the comparison with acceptability criteria for the evaluation of a specific open pit design and the comparative analysis of open pit design options in terms of value and risk to identify optimum pit layouts.

Lithium is an alkali metal found in brine deposits in the United States, Chile and Argentina, as well as in hard rock deposits in Australia and North America. In hard rock deposits, spodumene (LiAl(Si2O6)) is the major economic lithium bearing mineral. Spodumene is typically upgraded through a combination of dense media separation, flotation and magnetic separation. One of the major spodumene concentrate quality specifications is the iron oxide content because it will help determine if the concentrate is considered ceramic grade for use in ceramics and glass or chemical grade for use in lithium ion batteries. The rejection of iron bearing silicate minerals from artificial ore composites (high amphibole and low amphibole, high quartz/feldspar) from a hard-rock spodumene deposit was investigated using magnetic separation and flotation. The efficacy of Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) in iron rejection was found to be dependent on the mineralogy of the iron-bearing silicate minerals including modal distribution, liberation and association. When magnetic separation was conducted prior to flotation, the Fe2O3 grade in the final flotation spodumene concentrate was reduced from ~3% to ~1% Fe2O3 , and improved lithium recovery in flotation was observed. It was determined that it was most effective to conduct WHIMS on the flotation feed after scrubbing and de-sliming because this reduced the required magnetic field to recover iron-bearing minerals, likely because slime coating was greatly reduced. Flotation collector screening of four different collectors with varying rosin acid content demonstrated a potential increase in selective flotation of spodumene over some iron silicate minerals with decreasing rosin acid content in the fatty acid collector. However, due to marginal difference in flotation results with the various collectors tested, further testing is required to confirm the observations made and establish a hypothesis regarding the effect of rosin acid content.

Tunnel damage from explosion and earthquake excitation is correlated with strain and particle motions. Critical strains and motions are then correlated with focal distance, which is so small that permanent strains are highly likely. The shaking process is then numerically modeled to investigate the effects of excitation frequency and joint orientation. The models confirm that near cavern blocks slide intermittently only at relatively high particle velocities during periods of low joint normal stress. Larger displacements occur with relatively small shear wave lengths or relatively high frequencies. Variation in joint orientation and rock mass dilation result in changes in displacement.

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and these data change as internal and external conditions evolve. Staffing turnover hinders experienced-based decisions especially with simple tools like spreadsheets. Lack of current information can contribute to decisions that result in significant deterioration in the quality of operation. Timely, unified information from sophisticated analyses presented to the broadest possible reach will improve operation. The major innovation is the addition of the web browser to the suite of software people will use with no training – the other two are spreadsheets and graphical presentations – and the consistent organization and transformation of the real time data to support broad access. This paper describes the data transformations and presentation methods necessary for a Web view, especially the special needs of real time data and analysis required for active operations decision-making. Many people inside and outside the complex, not just operators, need timely information that is abstracted, aggregated, organized and unified. Unification and aggregation of real time data presented via the Web opens a new paradigm for collaboration. The analysis tools are as important as the data. These rule-based tools add significantly to the operations database in the form of results stored for viewing with plant data. Mining and metallurgical plants already use many sophisticated analysis tools such as predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. These add real time events, similar to an alarm package, and unified production information to the operational database. Simple models are used on line to create key indices that provide a real time indication of performance. Key indices include metrics for losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency, and overall process equipment effectiveness. These additional data in the operations database are used for early fault detection, increased production, better quality, higher availability of equipment and faster detection of process bottlenecks. An important feature is the ability for people to create their own key indices and store the results for use by anyone in the plant historian, but accessible by a browser. Occupational health and safety is regulated by statute and common law. South Africa has, like many other countries, legislated extensively on occupational health and safety. Despite the body of legislation, the common law continues to play an important role as far as it concerns contractual, delictual and criminal liability. Two major Acts regulate occupational health and safety viz. the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 (?OHASA?) and the Mine Health and Safety Act, No. 29 of 1996 (?MHSA?). The MHSA applies to mines and works as defined and related aspects. OHASA applies to other industries but does not apply to employers and workplaces to which the MHSA and certain matters covered by the Merchant Shipping Act, No. 57 of 1951 apply. See section 1(3) of OHASA. 2 The employer?s health and safety obligations in terms of the MHSA 2.1 Section 2(1) of the MHSA provides amongst others, as follows: ?The employer of every mine that is being worked must: (a) ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, that the mine is designed, constructed and equipped: (i) to provide conditions for safe operation and a healthy working environment (ii) ... (b) ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, that the mine is commissioned, operated, maintained and decommissioned in such away that employees can perform their work without endangering the health and safety of themselves or of any other person?.

The ferroalloys industry has generated historically substantial solid waste. The accumulated waste causes serious problems to the environment. However, it is possible to transform the solid waste into an environment-friendly resource to serve the human being. Consequently, the construction of plants that are ?environment-friendly? and that accommodate ?recycling? has become a target of most ferroalloy producers in the world to ensure sustainable development. This paper introduces the practice of Shanxi Jiaocheng Yiwang Ferroalloys Works, the biggest manganese metal producer in China, in the development of an ?environment-friendly and recycling? process. The process includes power generation using coal gangue, waste from local coal mines; hollow bricks manufacture using slag and fly ash from the power station; cement production using slag from ferroalloy smelting; recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous elements in the dust from the furnace gas cleaning system; application of silica dust in construction and so on. The final objective of the plant is to realize zero discharge of solid waste. The profit of the ?environment-friendly and recycling? process compensates in part for the operational expense of the environment facilities.

This paper explains the politics of mine nationalization in contemporary South Africa. Nationalization and privatization typically occur in the oil, mineral resources, and state utilities sectors, and they tend to follow one another in a long-term cyclical pattern. The paper explains why the current international environment has encouraged demands for nationalization and other forms of ?resource nationalism? in the South African minerals sector. It goes on to describe how the resurgence of resource nationalism has been influenced by internal factional politics in the African National Congress. It concludes that nationalization is unlikely to be the outcome of current policy deliberations within the ANC.

The countercurrent gas-solid heat transfer during the drying of brown coal briquettes in the pilot carbonization plant at Morwell has been analysed and theoretical gas and solid temperature distributions through the drier have been calculated. Although the calculations rest on several simplifying assumptions, the theoretical temperature distributions compare well with those observed in practical operation. Valuable conclusions are reached as to the effects of changes in drier operating conditions on the rate of drying of the briquettes which controls the strength of the char produced. The analysis shows why a limitation was reached in the improvement of char strength in the pilot plant in 1961 due to the performance of the drier and a prediction is made of a way in which the limitation could be overcome.

In recent years, U.S. regulatory agencies have placed emphasis on identifying and regulating asbestos dust exposures in the mining environment, with a particular focus upon industrial mineral deposits in which asbestos occurs as an accessory mineral. Because asbestos minerals form in specific geologic environments, only certain predictable types of industrial mineral deposits can potentially host asbestos mineralization. By applying a basic knowledge of asbestos geology, the costly and time consuming efforts of asbestos monitoring and analyses can be directed towards those mineral deposit types most likely to contain asbestos mineralogy, while saving efforts on the mineral deposits that are unlikely to contain asbestos. While the vast majority of industrial mineral deposits in the Western United States are asbestos-free, there are several types that can, in some instances, host asbestos mineralization, or be closely associated with it. These industrial mineral deposits include a few types of aggregate, dimension, and decorative stone, and some deposits of chromite-nickel, magnesite, nepheline syenite, olivine, rare earth elements, talc, vermiculite, and wollastonite.

In ventilated tunnel fires, smoke and hot combustion products may form a layer near the ceiling and flow in the direction opposite to the ventilation stream. The existence of this reverse stratified flow has an important bearing on fire fighting and evacuation of underground mine roadways, tunnels and building corridors. In the present study, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a CFD program (fire dynamics simulator) based on large eddy simulations (LES) is used to model floor-level fires in a ventilated tunnel. Specifically, the critical ventilation velocity that is just sufficient to prevent the formation of a reverse stratified layer is simulated for two tunnels of different size. The computer code is verified by checking the computed velocity profile against experimental measurements. The CFD results show the leveling-off of the critical ventilation velocity as the heat release rate surpasses a certain value. At this critical ventilation, the ceiling temperature above the fire reaches a maximum for both tunnels. The velocity leveling-off can be explained from this observation. An extended correlation of Newman (Combust. Flame 57 (1984) 33) is applied to the temperature profiles obtained by CFD. At the critical ventilation, temperature stratification exists downstream from the fire. The computed critical ventilation velocity shows fair agreement with available experimental data taken from both horizontal and inclined fire tunnels. The CFD simulations indicate that the Froude modeling is an approximation for tunnel fires. The Froude-scaling law does not apply to two geometrically similar fire tunnels. Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The sediment geochemistry of streams draining Southern Uplands and Lake District turbidites was compared with lithogeochemical data for the source greywackes, using stratigraphically defined catchments. Several systematic trends in element abundance variation between source and stream sediment can probably be applied more widely to interpretation of drainage geochemistry. Pb and Zr increase markedly from source rock to sediment, by adsorption on clay and zircon grain concentration. Variation of feldspar-related elements Rb, Sr, K and Ba appears to be controlled by source grain size and compositional maturity. Ni shows surprisingly little change and Fe and Co are only slightly raised. Cr is particularly useful, with variations superimposed in anomalously high regional levels. Abrupt changes in Cr distribution in stream sediment coincide with stratigraphical boundaries, allowing drainage data to be used as a surrogate for whole-rock values

Globalization creates investment opportunities for enterprises around the world. Attracting foreign investment has been a key challenge for economic growth in developing countries. Corruption, political instability, armed conflict, and other internal problems affect foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows negatively. A framework of criteria provides a basis for comparing non-commercial risk (NCR) among twenty-three mineral economies. Countries competing for foreign direct investment inflows are ranked from least to most risky. This study compares Inward FDI Performance Index (IND) with NCR ratings in developing countries and shows that risk is increasingly mitigated by means of appropriately structured insurance. Given the option for countries with similar mineral potential, investors will generally invest in the country that offers lower non-commercial risk.
