Underground coal mining causes overburden deformation and failure, one major form of which is bed separation in the overburden. Surface subsidence can be controlled by injecting grout into the bed separations. For a long time, the grouting results of bed separation can not be validated. This is the problem in the application of this technique. This paper analyzes the conditions leading to bed separation, develops mathematical models for seismic wave fields generated before and after bed separation, and bed separations grouted with different materials, and computes the seismic wave field characteristics using the finite difference method. The results show that the existence of bed separation causes changes in the characteristics of seismic wave field, and that different grouting materials generate different seismic wave field characteristics. Intact strata, bed separation, and bed separation filled with air or water all display distinctive seismic wave field in amplitude and frequency spectra. After mining, the original location that provides strong seismic reflection wave no long exists. It is replaced by a weak and syncline-shaped reflection wave. The area, where the seam wave disappears, is larger than that of the mined area. The location, where a bed separation occurs, generates a set of reflection waves stronger than the normal one. The energy of the reflection waves varies with the materials filling the separations. Bed separations filled with air generate stronger reflection waves than those filled with water. The major frequencies for those filled with air are lower than those filled with water. Therefore, it is possible to determine the property of filling materials by analyzing and comparing the amplitude and frequency spectra of the reflection waves. Case studies of application of seismic method for exploring bed separations and grouting were analyzed. The results show that it is feasible to use seismic technique for exploring bed separations and grouting.

Since 2008, Arrium has been developing and commissioning a new low-grade hematite ore benefication plant (or OBP) at its Iron Baron mine site.The Iron Baron mine, which was closed in the 1990s, could not consistently yield the high-grade hematite required for pelletising. However, in todayÆs market, the 12 Mt of waste dumps represent a significant low-grade hematite resource, ideal for benefication.Initially, an internal scoping study and several sampling campaigns were conducted to determine the ability to upgrade the available low-grade dump material to a product suitable for export. Test work was conducted at Mineral Technologies (formerly CPG), and included high intensity magnetic separation, spiralling and jigging. Due to promising results from a wet processing circuit, Arrium engaged Mineral Technologies to design a flow sheet that could provide 1 Mt/a of a mixture of high-grade lump (-32 + 8 mm) and fines (-8 mm) products for export.With construction of the plant completed in late January 2012, Arrium, in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, began two commissioning phases. Each phase ended with a toll gate to prove the plantÆs capacity to reach rate and desired grade. After an initial period of running on water, feed solids were introduced to the plant and troubleshooting of bottlenecks began. The first toll gate, whereby the plant was required to run for 24 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h (80 per cent of design rate), was completed on the 1 March 2012. Further troubleshooting and resolving of issues allowed the plant to steadily increase feedrate while maintaining good availability and grade. The second toll gate required the plant to run for 72 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h while meeting grade, yield and water consumption targets. Sampling campaigns were conducted during this period to track the performance of key equipment. Completion of the test, and full handover of the plant to Arrium, was completed on the 21 April 2012.Although the formal commissioning phases had been completed, ongoing optimisation of the OBP continued, ensuring that all major equipment was working to produce the optimum yield and grade. Sampling campaigns were conducted on the jigs and spirals, with results and correlations used for operations documentation.Overall, with successful completion of the final acceptance tests, the commissioning of the Iron Baron OBP has been established as a major success achieving all production and quality targets as per the original design intent.This paper will focus on the successful commissioning and ramp-up performance of the plant however reference will also be made to the key development stages involved with the development of the project.CITATION:Stanton, C and Bannear, M, 2013. The leaching and reduction of Cr(VI) in soils contaminated by chromium-containing slag were investigated with column experiments. The results showed that Cr(VI) concentration in leachate decreased from 988 mg L-1 to 407 mg L-1 after 7 days when water was used as leaching agent. However, Cr(VI) in leachate in culture medium treatment was not detected at above periods. In comparison, Cr(VI) concentration in leachate from autoclaved soil remained 398 mg L-1 at the end of experiment. The results indicated that the indigenous microorganism was capable of reducing Cr(VI). The amount of Cr(VI) reduction was 335 mg at the whole experiment period and the reduction rate was 67.09 mg d-1. Carbon supply showed minor effect on Cr(VI) reduction. However the reduction capability of Cr(VI) could be improved by combination of the carbon and the nitrogen. The optimal quantity was 5 g L-1 of yeast extract and 4 g L-1 of glucose.

The recovery of copper from oxide ores containing from 2% to 4.1% acid-soluble copper from the Sarcheshmeh mine in Kerman province of Iran was investigated by agitation leaching in sulfuric acid media. Quartz, as a major constituent, and malachite, as the major copper mineral, were identified in the ore by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and microscopic studies. A series of leaching experiments on the ore was performed over a concentration range of 10 to 20 g/L and temperatures from 15° to 50°C for a maximum of 3 hours. An initial high dissolution of copper was followed by a very slow reaction. By increasing acid concentration and temperature, the dissolution rate of copper was accelerated. However, by increasing acid concentration, the acid consumption of ores was also increased. Surface morphology of solid residues at various leaching times was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). All SEM micrographs of the partially reacted particles displayed a needle structure. The kinetic studies showed that the malachite dissolution rate could be modeled in two stages. About 85% of the malachite dissolution occurred in Stage 1, while the remaining 15% occurred in Stage 2. The data obtained for the leaching kinetics indicate that the dissolution for Stage 1 was a diffusion-controlled reaction with an activation energy of about 20.6 kJ/mole, and the dissolution for the Stag 2 was a chemical-controlled reaction with an activation energy of about 87.6 kJ/mole.

This paper is intended partly as a summary of the conclusions that have been arrived at by various authorities on this matter, and also with a view to initiate some discussion on the subject, especially as most of the quartz gold mines in Victoria are operated without having any proper assay plans or any idea of the real values other than those given by the mining managers, who, from experience in the particular cases, are supposed to be able to arrive at a correct idea of the true values of- the ore, and, in many cases, oppose any other methods than their own, holding the view that no sampling is equal in correctness to the bulk sample of the battery. The necessity of properly sampling and estimating the ore in a mine in every case, perhaps hardly needs to be urged on the members of the Institute, but is not, apparently, so obvious to others.It is proposed to confine this paper to the sampling of ore reserves in a mine, and the various points which have to be taken into consideration in arriving at values, from the assayer's point of view, leaving the methods of sampling metallurgical products out of consideration for the present. "It is advisable to define" ore reserves" as ore exposed on three sides at least, and accessible to the sampler on all three. "Prospective ore" would include all ore not so fully exposed; but which may, from the nature of the case, and the geological conditions prevailing, be reasonably supposed to exist.

Stope back conditions in the cut-and-fill stopes at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited often deteriorate to such an extent that, because conventional rockbolts are not able to maintain safe working conditions, square-set timber is installed. An attempt to eliminate this costly procedure has involved the use of long grouted rockbolts using high tensile prestressing wire. These bolts were developed in conjunction with the prestressing engineers of BBR (Aust.). This form of support has improved the back conditions, maintained safe working conditions, and delayed the introduction of timber in a number of stopes.Production from these stopes has been maintained at its previous level (at a rate approximately double that of a comparable timber stope).

This paper is in two parts. The first covers the evolution of dredging leading to the development of the æNZ typeÆ large dredge and the second, current alluvial gold recovery practice in NZ. NZ was the first country in the world to adapt the bucket-ladder dredge to alluvial gold recovery. Between 1857 and 1907, gold worth (at today's NZ price of about NZ$600/ounce*) over $11 billion was exported û from a country with well under one million people at that time. Over 200 small dredges operated, mostly on the Clutha River, around the turn of the century, however by 1940, only 20 or so large machines remained, and the last of these, the 4000 ton 'Kanieri' ceased operations three years ago. Recently recognition of the superior digging power of the hydraulic backhoe and reintroduction of the simple 'trommel and riffleÆ plant with about 80 m3 /hour capacity has led to a proliferation of static and floating plants, there being at least 50 currently in operation on the West Coast and in Otago. There are signs however, that the process of evolution of such small unsophisticated plants into larger, more efficient units has begun again. * At the time of writing (October 1984) NZ$l. 00 = US 50ó. "SGS Minerals Services (Lakefield, Ontario site) has conducted a number of developmental and pilot programs that examined methods for the beneficiation, extraction and recovery of lithium from a variety of spodumene containing hard rock sources. An overview of the beneficiation programs is presented separately by Aghamirian, Mohns, Grammatikopoulos, Imeson & Pearse (2011). The focus of this discussion will be the hydrometallurgical steps involved in producing a high grade lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) sample from the spodumene concentrate. SGS has applied the standard Li2CO3 hydrometallurgical flow sheet to a number of spodumene concentrates and has determined that all of these samples respond in a similar manner to the process and produce a final product having a Li2CO3 grade of >99.5%. The standard process is sufficiently robust to accommodate the observed variability in the concentrates that have been tested. Advantage of one spodumene deposit over another will thus be gained through process optimization and innovation. Optimization at the beneficiation stage and at the hydrometallurgical stage must be considered. Some aspects of the process optimization of the hydrometallurgical flow sheet will be presented.INTRODUCTION The current activity in the exploration, development, and mining of lithium based minerals is due in large part to the key role that this metal plays in the rechargeable battery industry (U.S. Geological Survey, 2011). Lithium battery technologies are widely applied in a range of portable electronic consumer products. The expanding development and production of hybrid and fully electric vehicles has contributed to the increased interest in finding and developing new lithium sources in order to meet the expected demand from the lithium battery industry. Lithium may be sourced from continental brines (sub-surface salars), hard rock minerals (pegmatite, spodumene), hectorite clay deposits, geothermal brines and oilfield brines. Currently the majority of the lithium products are produced from Li brines. The four major lithium producing countries are Chile, Australia, China, and Argentina (U.S. Geological Survey, 2009; Roskill, 2009). These countries accounted for 97.6% of the total lithium produced in 2010."

"Many power-based grinding models exist, and most operators are familiar with Fred Bond's ""third theory"". Bond's model is most commonly used to describe primary and secondary grinding to product sizes above, for example, 100 µm. Operators sometimes use Bond's equation to describe grinding in situations where it is not appropriate, such as fine grinding below 50 µm. Using an alternative model would be a better choice in this situation.Bond's equation is one in a large family of models. Related equations better suited to fine grinding include the “signature plot”, Von Rittinger's model and Charles' equation. These models have a similar form to Bond's and can be fit to industrial regrind mills and laboratory tests using the simple regression tools in the charts of computer spreadsheets. Operators will find that fine grinding calculations are both easier and more accurate when using the alternative equations to fit their regrind milling surveys or when performing laboratory regrind mill scale-up for plant design.None of these models are new: Charles' equation was published in 1957 and Von Rittinger's model was proposed in 1867. A quick refresh how to apply these equations can turn these oddities from the undergraduate curriculum into useful tools for plant optimization. They can be fit to any type of mill including stirred and tumbling ball mills.IntroductionBuilding a case for fine grind modelling requires reviewing some theory before building a framework for doing fine grinding calculations. The actual calculation procedure recommended is easy and can be applied by plant metallurgists. Don’t be frightened by the theory; the end result is reasonably simple.The observation that mineral breakage is related to the absorption of energy is usually attributed to Von Rittinger (1867). Lynch and Rowland (2005) describe that the ability to empirical test and calibrate energy models of breakage didn’t exist until the widespread adoption of electric motors in the mining industry during the 1930’s and 1949’s. A series of technical papers published by the Allis Chalmers company during the 1940’s demonstrate that they were attempting to do such a calibration using Von Rittinger’s model which is usually stated as: “the energy consumed in the size reduction is proportional to the area of new surface produced.”"

The proper selection of a coal for a particular use depends on knowledge of fundamental data concerning the coals that offer, particularly their type and rank. Type of coal depends on the nature of the original plants and the environment in which they accumulated.Rank reflects the subsequent metamorphism of the coal, and is of two kinds-physical rank and chemical rank.INTRODUCTIONIn the different coalfields of the Commonwealth of Australia there occur many different kinds of coal which provide the coal-research worker with a wide range of material, but to the fuel technologist they represent complex problems in utilization.In the past it has been common practice to instal coal-using equipment of a design based on plant used in large industrial centres of other countries and then search for supplies of suitable coal. This has led to the transportation of coal mainly from New South Wales to other States, which have inadequate supplies of coal suitable for use in the equipment they have installed. However, modern economy and industrial practice demand local resources of coal for the development of industry, transport and domestic services, and a change in the old order is rapidly taking place. Technologists and engineers are now faced with the problem of designing and installing equipment to use whatever kind of coal is available in local coalfields.Much has been accomplished in this direction and important investigations are at present being carried out, but there still remains a wide field of problems for research.In planning and carrying out investigations into coal utilization it is essential that fundamental data and knowledge should be available and that its significance should be appreciated.

The Australian Centre for Minesite Rehabilitation Research (ACMRR) was established through a mining industry initiative to meet the need of industry, governments and the community for sustainable systems for land affected by exploration, mining and mineral processing activities. The Centre, which is a consortium of the major groups associated with mining rehabilitation research in Australia, has a focus on both strategic research and technology transfer and combines a wide range of multidisciplinary skills covering engineering and the physical and biological sciences. The paper briefly describes the goals, structure, expertise and research and technology transfer activities of the Centre. The major research program areas of waste rock dump and final void stability, acid mine drainage, tailings disposal, and remediation of ecosystem reconstruction are described in the context of national priorities.

Much interest has been shown recently in the possible utilization of dolomite as a source of magnesium metal, a large production of which is deemed essential for national defense. As a result, many inquiries have been received by the Bureau of Mines as to sources of dolomite. This report has been prepared primarily to augment the Bureau's present published information on the occurrence of high-grade dolomite deposits in the United States. To supplement such data, the report also defines dolomite and related rocks and describes their properties and uses. The uses are covered in some detail in Information Circular 6524 entitled "Utilization of Dolomite and High-Magnesium Limestone," published in 1931 but now out of print. All essential data on uses contained in that report have been incorporated herein, and. have: been supplemented by data developed during subsequent years. DEFINITION Dolomite is a mineral composed of calcium end magnesium carbonates combined in equal molecular proportions, expressed by the formula CaMg(C03)2. The simple act of taking a sample implies that someone will use the information contained in the analytical result to make a decision about a course of action. In the mining industry, the decisions may involve huge capital commitments for opening or closing a mine, or marginal tactical costs that involve deciding if a truckload of mineralized rock should be sent to the mill for processing, or the waste dump. Sampling is among the most fundamental activities in a mining operation, and this paper aims to examine some of the technical issues that can assist in ensuring that samples are representative and correct. Insights into the scale of variability require that we disaggregate sampling variance into its component parts and evaluate each one individually. The work of Pierre Gy in understanding the different sampling errors is the first step in establishing an optimal protocol. This must be followed by the appropriate measures to ensure the protocol is implemented such that minimal bias is introduced in the sampling process. Even with these insights the possibility exists for large unseen and hidden costs can accumulate in a mineral development because of sampling errors. These hidden costs arise due to misunderstanding of the principle factors that affect the size of sampling errors, such as the mass of the sample, the effects of splitting a sample to reduce the mass, and the influence of the nominal particle size. The handling of sample material without due regard to the sampling characteristics of the material being sampled is also a major source of sampling errors. The most significant problem is due to the influence of the so-called volume-variance effect. This effect is a consequence of the support effect and the information effect both of which relate to the difference in size at which samples are collected and mining blocks are extracted. The information effect is a function of the availability of data at the time that decisions are made about the destinations of mineralized rock, namely the mill or the waste dump. Implementation of appropriate sampling protocols in the mineral value chain remains a challenge throughout the industry. The growing understanding and deepening appreciation of sampling theory and methods means we stand on the threshold of a new era for implementing and understanding appropriate sampling procedures and protocols. In the interests of optimal development of the national patrimony it is suggested that standardization through the identification of structural problems and continuous improvement of mining processes be instituted at a national level.

Grade control and short-term planning are usually based on the samples obtained from blastholes. These samples may carry a large sampling and sample preparation error. At El Tesoro copper mine in northern Chile, an advance drilling grid is used for short-term planning and grade control. These drill holes are sampled well in advance, and a short-term model that incorporates several variables and sophisticated estimation methods can be prepared for decisionmaking. An additional advantage of the advance drilling samples is that reverse circulation can be used instead of conventional down-the-hole equipment, and a very careful sampling and sample preparation process can be implemented, reducing the total sampling error. Advance drilling can be performed on a wider grid than blasthole drilling, hence the decision about the grid requires assessing the economic benefit of different sampling grids. Furthermore, this process allows the cost of poor sampling and the effect of different estimation procedures to be quantified. We demonstrate the optimization of the drilling grid for short-term planning and grade control at El Tesoro mine by means of the economic evaluation of the performance of different drilling grids, with different drilling techniques (which differ in the sampling error). The methodology is based on creating dense (exhaustive) geostatistical simulations of the grade distribution over a volume defined for a production period in respect of the geological model, and assuming each simulation as the true grade distribution. Then, samples are obtained from the exhaustive simulations at a spacing similar to the advance grid to be evaluated, and a sampling error is added. The short-term estimation procedures used on the mine are applied to determine the destination of each block and the profit obtained. This profit can be compared with the maximum profit (unachievable) and with the profit under different sampling errors and grids. The results show that the current 8 x 8 m drilling grid is appropriate and by reducing the sampling error, misclassification is also reduced, leading to an increase in profit of about US$ 5 million in 4 years.

In 1956 the discovery of nickel on Jumbo Mountain, Snohomish County, Washington, focused attention on this part of the Cascade Range, far more renowned for its timber than for its mineral resources. Hand specimens assaying as high as 13 pct Ni encouraged Discovery Mines Inc. of Mount Vernon, Wash., to stake 12 claims in Township 31 North, Range 9 East of the Willamette Meridian. The property was leased to Climax Molybdenum Co. in January 1957. Trenching, sampling, and geologic studies were carried out during the late summer of 1957 when most of the snow had disappeared. Although the deposits are only about four miles south of the logging town of Darrington and about two miles. as the crow flies, southeast of the end of a good gravel road from that town, all camp supplies and equipment were air-dropped, owing to the extremely rugged nature of the terrain. GEOLOGY The rocks of Jumbo Mountain comprise a series of folded Tertiary sediments forming a belt one half to three quarters of a mile wide, trending northwest about parallel to the strike of the beds. This belt is sandwiched between two extensive in-trusives—gabbro on the northeast and quartz dio-rite on the southwest—and has been intruded by dikes of fresh and serpentinized dunite. Shear zones follow many of the dunite-sedimentary rock contacts, and in these the nickel mineralization is concentrated. A few transverse faults offset the sediments and ultrabasics. Sedimentary Rocks: Two kinds of quartzite make up the greater part of the sedimentary section. One is dark purplish gray, very fine-grained, and thin-bedded; the other is light gray to white, medium-grained, and well-bedded. Locally the light-colored quart lites contain grit and conglomerate horizons, rich in pebbles of white chert and very fine-grained quartzite. Intercalations of dark argillites near the summit of the mountain give many of the cliffs a striking banded appearance. Dark gray to black, aphanitic, thin-bedded argillites occur throughout the entire sedimentary belt. Beds vary from a few inches to a few tens of feet thick and some, near the summit, contain numerous fossile (willow?) leaves. Only the thicker beds were mapped. The sediments are quite fresh on the northeastern side of the belt and become more metamorphosed (hornfelsed) toward the southwestern side. Brown biotite is present in the metasediments in increasing amounts as the quartz diorite is approached. Near the intrusion, porphyroblasts of plagioclase, up to 1 in. across, testify to the soaking of sedimentary rocks by solutions emanating from the quartz diorite. Most of the sediments mapped lie along the southwestern limb of an anticline, the axis of which follows the crest of the mountain and plunges at a low angle to the northwest.

Efficient separation of trace muscovite from the surface/interface of quartz grains was accomplished during oxidizing calcination and catalytic pressure leaching of the hydrothermal quartz. Experimental results suggest that 98.97% or more of the muscovite was separated when quartz sand was calcined at 900 °C for 5 h and then leached by hydrochloric acid and ammonium chloride solutions as substitutes for leaching agents containing fluorides. The chemical processing techniques show high selectivity in purifying quartz sand by transforming mineral muscovite into active structures during oxidizing calcination, and then dissolving the active substances during catalytic pressure leaching

A study of the various components contributing to energy costs and their relationships to generally trended operating data, such as tonnage, operating costs, etc., over progressively shorter time periods provides information for an energy audit. A study of annual data gives some insight into the importance of various energy components. As the time frame of the study progresses through monthly, daily and, finally, into quarter hourly data, the variations become more evident and, most important, strategies develop to minimize energy costs. The results of an audit conducted during the summer of 1978 at Wesfrob Mines Limited are reported to illustrate this important phase, prerequisite to a meaningful energy cost avoidance program. The balance of the paper deals with the energy conservation program at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited's Sudbury operations, the metering and control equipment, the commitment, the new energy accounting practices and, lastly, the policies. Examples of successful energy conservation endeavours include automatic peak electrical load control, waste heat recovery from mine air and compressor cooling water, energy reductions resulting from lower building temperatures and curtailment of idling loads. The use of pulse meters to measure the flow of gas, steam, compressed air and electrical energy, with their signals interfaced to process computers, allows monthly, daily and, if necessary, immediate reporting of energy and energy per unit of production information The program so reported at Falconbridge's Sudbury Operations is credited with an annual cost avoidance of .9 million dollars in a 14.0-million-dollar annual energy account
