Concrete pump is commonly used to transport paste and high-density backfill over relatively long horizontal distances. However, since the investment in concrete-pump and its operating cost are quite high, the application of paste backfill is limited in China. For seeking an alternative paste backfill technology, squeezed-transport technique and equipment has been developed. The new technology has been adopted at Tonglushan Copper Mine of Daye Nonferrous Metals Corp for overcoming a difficulty of long-distance transportation of high-density cemented tailings fill. It proved to be an alternative paste backfill method with simple backfill system, saving investment and low operating costs.

An active underground lead mine produces water having a pH of 8.0 with 0.4 to 0.6 mg/L of Pb and 0.36 mg/L. of Zn. This water is pumped at the rate of 1.200 gpm into a five-cell, bioreactor system covering about 5 acres. The gravity flow system is composed of a settling basin followed by two anaerobic bioreactors arranged in parallel which discharge into a rock filter polishing cell that is followed by a final aeration polishing pond. The primary lead removal mechanism is sulfate reduction/sulfide precipitation. The discharge has met stringent in-stream water quality requirements since its commissioning in 19%. However, there have been startup and operational difficulties. The system was designed to last about 12 years, but estimates suggest a much longer life based on anticipated carbon consumption in the anaerobic cells.

While there has been continual improvement in the models for predicating deposition velocity and pipeline friction losses, the fundamental design philosophy for tailings pipelines has remained the same over the previous three or four decades: design the tailings pipeline to operate in turbulent flow without a deposit on the pipe invert for all expected process conditions. Recent improvements in the understanding of slurry pipeline flows allows for the design of pipelines operating with a deposit on the pipe invert, allowing the system to operate at moderate velocities for high flow rates, optimizing system energy requirements and maximizing pipeline wear life. Tailings pipelines are increasingly operated at higher solids concentrations where there is a greater likelihood the pipeline will operate in laminar flow due to the higher tailings slurry rheology. Historically, slurry pipelines have been operated in turbulent flow. We now know that laminar flow pipeline operation is possible as there are several operational laminar flow tailings pipelines. While our understanding of laminar flow slurry pipelines is not complete, recent research provides guidance on how to approach the design of these pipelines. New sensor technology has led to the development of an instrument that provides reliable indication of bed deposit height within a pipeline. This technology is particularly helpful in operating pipelines with a deposit and has application in better understanding the operation of laminar flow pipelines. Failure of tailings pipelines can result in consequent damage to surrounding structures and unacceptable spillage into the environment. Modern pipeline leak detection technology allows operators to better manage this risk by ensuring safe and reliable operation of tailings pipelines. This paper provides an overview of the each of the above advances in the design and operation of tailings pipelines. OPERATING TAILINGS PIPELINES WITH A DEPOSIT Tailings pipelines, and slurry pipelines in general, are typically designed to operate without a deposit on the pipeline invert. Meaning, the minimum operating velocity exceeds the turbulent deposition velocity. This approach has been adopted due to concerns regarding potential blockage of a pipeline operating with a deposit. Figure 1 shows a typical design duty envelope for a tailings delivery system as a function of solids throughput and solids concentration by mass. If the pipeline is designed to operate without a deposit at the lowest duty flow rate (4,480 m3/h), the operating velocity at the highest duty flow rate (6,590 m3/h) is about 1.5 times the deposition velocity. Considering that the pipeline wear and energy requirements are roughly proportional to the square of operating velocity, this results in an operationally inefficient system when the pipeline is operated close to the maximum design flow rate. Most systems tend to operate at maximum throughput after post-startup debottlenecking optimizations. Alternative Approach An alternate design approach is to ensure the pipeline operates without a deposit for the nominal flow rate and accept that a deposit will form when operating at lower flow rates. This results in the selection of a larger diameter pipeline, but there are significant benefits in terms of reduced energy requirements and lower pipeline wear.

"The process of coal mining, as indeed of the mining of any stratified mineral, is inevitably followed by some degree of sinking of the superjacent strata and consequently of the surface." Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence, Second and Final Report, London, 1927. INTRODUCTION The above statement was used to describe mining subsidence in the classic report of the "Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence," published in 1927. In fact, this phenomenon has been recognized in Britain since the early fifteenth century, as revealed from court records of disputes and litigations related to property damage above mine workings (Shadbolt, 1978). The first attempts to investigate and analyze the mechanisms associated with mining subsidence, however, date back to the 1800's and were pursued by Belgian Engineers. This research effort was initiated as a result of the widespread movements and subsequent structural damage suffered by the City of Liege in the 1820's. The most notable achievement of the Belgian school of that era was he publication of Gonot's treatise "Loie de la Normal" in 1871 (Gongt, 1871).

Ashanti Goldfields Company (AGC) is the largest gold mining company in Western Africa. Their jewel operation is a highly inte­grated set of mines and plants situated in Obuasi, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. This operation is responsible for mining 5.5 mil­lion tonnes of ore at 4.6 git annually from a series of open pits and underground mines. The sulphide ore is highly refractory with untreated gold recoveries in the range of 30-40%. The milling facilities are quite varied and include an oxide treatment plant (OTP), a heap leach, a sulphide roaster circuit (PTP), a tailings treahnent plant (TIP) and the most recent, a sulphide treatment plant (STP). The sulphide treatment plant, the world's largest stirred tank biooxidation circuit, was commissioned in early 1994. This plant treats approximately 800 tonnes of refractory gold con­centrate per day with overall recoveries of75-85o/o(ll, Biooxidation was selected for its ease of operation and less exotic maintenance requirements as well as its ability to achieve comparable gold recoveries. Unfortunately, despite stirred tank biooxidation being one of the lower cost methods of treating refractory ores, it is still too costly for low grade refractory materials. GeoBiotics, Inc. has developed a proprietary technology that allows the economic treatment of lower grade refractory gold ores through heap biooxidation. AGC has a significant resource of low grade refractory sulphide ore. This ore is too low grade to warrant BIOX™ sulphide treatment and its oxide plant recov­ery is low at 35-45%. GeoBiotics and AGC have completed pre­liminary testing and economic analysis of heap biooxidation for this material. Additionally, the feasibility of producing a gravity concentrate from the tailings of the sulphide treatment plant has been explored. This concentrate would be coated onto the low grade sulphide and biooxidized concurrently. Gold recoveries for the biooxidized low grade sulphide have increased to 75% and the gravity recovery from the STP tailings has achieved 80% uti­lizing a Falcon concentrator. The preliminary economics of the proposed full scale plant are very favourable with a pre-tax IRR of 233% and a payback period of 6 months. This paper details the biooxidation testing, flow sheet devel­opment and preliminary economics of employing heap biooxi­dation for low grade refractory ore treatment at Ashanti Goldfields' Obuasi operation.

Conveyor systems are an essential part of many material movements in all conceivable areas of application. They are used to transport goods in raw materials extraction, agriculture, and even articles for daily use. In the process, not only distances of several kilometers but also differences in altitude of several hundred meters are bridged. The layout of the conveyor usually follows the topography at the respective installation site. Particularly in the case of large height differences, safety devices must be provided to prevent uncontrolled movement. Backstops can take over this task in predominantly ascending overland conveyors and are used either as a primary or as a secondary safety system in conjunction with a service brake. They are always used when the system comes to an unplanned standstill, whether due to a power failure, an emergency stop or a defect. When designing backstops, it must be ensured in any case that all conceivable circumstances are taken into account so that failure is ruled out without the product being unnecessarily large in size. Various safety factors are applied, some of which are even prescribed by authorities. One example is the Australian standard on machine safety for bulk material belt conveyors (AS/NZS 4024). This stipulates a redundant acceleration safety device that can absorb at least 150% of the maximum load. This paper describes the production of a specific iron oxide pellet that has given very good and consistent results as feedstock for HYL-Process Direct Reduction Plants. The sponge iron originated from these pellets has been used for the economic making of almost 15 million tons of low carbon steel via electric arc furnace meltshops. An overview of mining, benefication, pelletizing direct reduction and steelmaking for this case is given with emphasis on the characteristics of the self-fluxing oxide pellets. The length of Alaska’s coastline, combined with the presence of a significant number of fjords, encourages consideration of marine disposal of mine tailings. However, since various factors govern the viability of the submarine tailings disposal (STD) option, the decision making process is complex. An expert system, called Submarine Tailings Disposal Expert System (STADES) that will help mining project planners explore the feasibility of STD, was developed. Existing literature, supplemented by engineering recommendations, on the various aspects of marine disposal of tailings was reviewed and formed the knowledge base for the expert system. The shell used to develop the expert system was LEVEL5®.

Ventilation conditions in working environments are usually studied by anemometry or, in complex cases, b using special tracer gases such as SF6 and 85Kr. in conjunction with chromatographic and radioactivity techniques, respectively. In some working environments, such as underground uranium mines, however, use can be made of the natural radioactivity environment (e.g.. 222rn. 220rn, and their progeny) to investigate mine ventilation conditions of practical interest. Theoretical studies and experimental data in several underground uranium mines and mine locations show that certain thoron progeny to radon progeny concentration ratios are very good indicators of ventilation conditions. Furthermore, the growth and decay of radon progeny and thoron progeny provide valuable information on mine air residence and clearance times. Some specific examples have been analyzed, such as bacterially-assisted uranium leaching operations in a partially enclosed stope, and the effect on the underground environment of turning ventilation fans on and off for a period of time. Air residence times and other variables of interest, determined from the mine radioactivity environment, were compared with more traditional techniques, such as anemometry and tracer gas chromatography. These studies were also extended to a wet non-uranium mine which exhibited relatively high concentrations of radon and its progeny.

1. Introduction This is a report on applications of the earth pressure type balanced shield tunneling projects executed under narrow streets on soft alluvial layers in Japan. Japan is a long island country surrounded by the sea. Steep mountain ranges run along the archipelago and numerous rivers originate from the mountains, leaving only limited areas of flat land along the upper and middle reaches of the streams. The majority of cities in Japan are on soft alluvial layers. Alluvium represents an extremely complex soil formation, sections bordering diluvium being characterized by sharp undulations. Various difficulties are therefore encountered in shield tunneling work undertaken in such ground conditions. Particularly, at work sites lying in an unstable, waterbearing layer with high permeability, shield excavation becomes utterly impossible, hampered by large amounts of underground water as well as land collapsing caused by the water. Even when work can somehow be accomplished by using chemical grouting or by lowering ground water level, which require extra expenses and time, undesirable effects such as ground surface settlement are unavoidable in projects undertaken in the past. The newly developed method allows safe and accurate tunnel excavation at normal speed and without giving any adverse effects on buildings above, even under such unstable ground conditions. An outline of this new method was announced at the "International Tunnel Symposium '78" held in Tokyo, and the method has since been employed in a number of tunneling projects in this country. EMR's recently commissioned Pilot Plant in Fredericton, N.B. Canada, the latest and largest in the company's sequence of prototype and demonstration systems, is being used as a process development facility for mining clients worldwide. Fitted with two microwave reactors and 75 kW generators, this plant is designed as a two-stage continuous processor with a throughput in the 5-10 tpd range depending upon the material feedstream. This facility has been used principally to calcine pyrite and arsenopyrite gold concentrates although it can readily accommo­date carbonaceous materials as well as a wide range of other ore types. Engineering details of the plant and the results of the first nine months of operation are presented. The plant has proven very successful as an advanced process development facility as well as a basic production unit module.

The increasing application of roadheading machines in the coal industry has prompted the development of an appropriate selection methodology for such machine applications in specific locales. Accurate geological sections and comprehensive rock testing are required for all machine tunneling. Using suitable geotechnical parameters and index tests, sensitive both to excavability and standability of the strata, a classification scheme has evolved to help evaluate the rock mass vis-a-vis application of a given weight-class of roadheading machine. The classification parameters include point load index, brittleness, abrasiveness, average crack density, and ground water, which with assigned numerical ratings, lead to a quantitative global rating of the rock mass. For each rock mass class, the selection of an appropriate roadheading machine is recommended. The paper illustrates the application of the rock mass rating system and also describes simple index tests for evaluating the classification parameters for brittleness and abrasiveness. Fuzzy logic and neural networks are new technologies being applied in many areas of engineering and business. While it is not always clear which kinds of problems are best suited to these technologies, and which problems are best approached with more standard methodologies, both fuzzy logic and neural networks appear to show great promise in the field of control systems. This paper demonstrates two advantages that these technologies offer: Easy controller design in the absence of a mathematical model of the plant to be controlled, and adaptive control capable of quickly responding to changes in the plant.

A ground-water flow model was developed to simulate the postmining recharge rate from precipitation at the Belle Ayr surface coal mine, which is located in the Powder River Basin near Gillette, WY Wyoming state regulations require that reclaimed lands should provide a rate of recharge that approximates the premining rate. Steady-state calibration and transient simulations showed that the postmining recharge rate through spoil is at least 50 mm (2 in.) per year, exceeding the original infiltration rate of 4 mm (0.16 in.) per year to shallow overburden aquifers. Major reasons for the increase include the flat topography of the reclaimed areas and the decreased spoil density. It is expected that the backfill will disaggregate and settle over time, eventually resulting in a nearly constant recharge rate that is less than 50 mm (2 in.) per year but still somewhat greater than the premining rate.

The underground portion of Duke Power Company's Bad Creek Pumped Storage Project in northwestern South Carolina consists of a powerhouse cavern (132 m. long, 23 m. wide, 50 m. high), 407 meters of shafts and approximately 3615 meters of tunnel, both lined and unlined, with diameters varying from 4.2 meters to 9.0 meters. A case history is presented, including the early pilot tunnel exploratory work and how this affected design, the design of the project, and the excavation, rock support and tunnel lining work. Problems and experiences encountered during the construction are given. The effects of high horizontal insitu stresses in the granitic gneiss are discussed along with solution taken.

The cost of remediation often drives the selection of the preferred remedial alternative at hazardous waste sites. The use of probabilistic cost/risk analyses can aid in predicting costs of remedial alternatives. Three types of information are discussed in performing cost/risk analyses: (1) data on the quantity of contamination versus the contaminant concentration; (2) unit costs of remediation for the remedial alternatives; and (3) risk to contaminant concentration relationships. Cost/risk evaluations are performed on a site-by-site basis, to account for combined risks of different contaminants and differences in quantity to be remediated versus contaminant concentration. The cost/risk analysis produces a graph of risk versus cost for each of the remedial alternatives. These costs are then compared to facilitate selection of a preferred alternative. An example of comparison of alternatives is illustrated for a historic coal gasification site.

Intrinsic remediation is the effect of natural attenuation mechanisms - dilution, dispersion, sorption/precipitation and biodegradation - reducing contaminant concentrations in ground water to specified levels at predetermined compliance points in the aquifer. Current monitoring and modeling for post closure was used to assess the current and long-term potential of intrinsic remediation of contaminated seepage originating from a large reactive (sulfidic) tailings impoundment near Questa, New Mexico. It is concluded that the natural attenuation mechanisms of precipitation within the tailings (as a result of buffering) and dilution/dispersion within the aquifer are currently active and likely sufficient to reduce contaminant concentrations to below state standards in the long-term. Other natural attenuation mechanisms such as sorption and biodegradation within the receiving aquife4s) were not assessed here, but are likely further reducing contaminant concentrations. Active interception and recovery of the seepage water is being maintained until monitoring demonstrates that intrinsic remediation has successfully achieved the level of water quality control required.

Fire detection using Carbon Monoxide sensors is based on the assumption that a rise in the level of Carbon Monoxide in the atmosphere over a fixed, predetermined ambient level is indicative of a fire. The method is simple, reliable, and effective in those mines where the only source of CO is from undesired combustion. Ambience for this purpose is defined as that level of the gas that is present on a day to day basis whose source is not a fire. In a diesel powered mine the level of CO can and does vary so widely from hour to hour and minute to minute that the selection of a predetermined, fixed level represents a compromise between sensitivity and reliability. The compromise is a best of both and worst of both situations and the computer system often resembles the little boy who cried wolf instead of a state of the art early fire monitoring and detection system. Cyprus Coal personnel have developed method of determining the ambient level of CO in the atmosphere on a real time basis and using that dynamic ambient level to determine whether or not a fire exists in the mine. The method has been given the name of Wave Trend Crossing.

An innovative biological process is described for the treatment of cyanide-, metals- and nitrate-contaminated mine process water. The technology was tested for its ability to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and to immobilize metals in wastewater from agitation cyanide leaching. A pilot-scale demonstration is described in which a pilot plant was constructed to demonstrate the technology on a mine process-waste stream at a mine in Nevada. The demonstration was performed jointly under the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the US De¬partment of Energy's (DOE) Western Environmental Technology Office (WETO) under Interagency Agree¬ment Number DW89938513-01-0. The Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) demonstration program was also involved in the project. MSE Technology Applications Inc. (MSE), Butte, MT, was the contractor responsible for conducting the project, and Pintail Systems Inc., Aurora, CO, was the technology provider. The pilot-scale unit was field-tested at Echo Bay's McCoy/Cove Mine southwest of Battle Mountain, NV. The biotreatment process was considered successful in destroying cyanide in the mine process water. The process was also determined to be effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized and nitrates were successfully removed from the mine process water. From the results of these pilot-scale tests, it was concluded that the biotreatment process potentially of¬fers an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

This study analyzed laboratory comminution techniques for respirable mine dust generation and the properties of the resulting dusts. It was the objective of the study to determine the suitability of the resulting dusts in reflecting the properties of natural airborne dust. This paper deals specifically with the amount of contamination introduced into the generated dust as a result of abrasion when using nine different grinding methods. The analysis was made by comparing the content of 25 chemical elements in the lab-generated dusts with the same elements in the airborne coal mine dusts. It was found that all the lab-generated dusts possessed contamination but that several methods produced smaller percentages of contamination and that the residence time in the grinding device was an important factor in the contamination levels.
