Although roof falls account for approximately half of the fatalities in underground coal mining, the factors that produce them are not clear. Mining methods can account for some, but in others the controlling factors are the geological setting in which the mining takes place. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the kinds of rocks that were most likely to produce roof problems. Such knowledge would be helpful to mine planning since rock samples can be obtained in advance of mining by core hole drilling. The investigation was undertaken in underground mines in the Pocahontas #3 seam in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. The Pocahontas #3 is one of the most widespread in this region and is a major source of high quality metallurgical coal. There are at least ten very large mines in the area and many smaller ones. The region has a very long mining history and considerable experience has been gained in roof control problems. The study was conducted with the support of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

Pre-mining identification of acid forming mine and waste materials is of concern to the mining industry because of the potential for the generation of acid mine drainage, acid rock drainage, and soil acidity problems. Accurate identification of acid forming material is essential for developing appropriate waste management strategies to reduce environmental problems related to acid generation from sulphide containing wastes. The acid-base accounting procedure, in its various forms , is commonly used for pre-mining screening of mine and mine waste materials. The procedure is generally effective when used and applied correctly but is prone to incorrect interpretation of results which can have significant financial and environmental implications. This paper examines the acid-base accounting Procedure and the possibility of misuse of this method with special emphasis on the sampling method, the sulphide forms, the acid neutralization capacity, and the interpretation of results. Data from numerous coal, base metal, and gold mining operations are used to illustrate the application of the acid-base account. The data base indicates that overall, approximately 1/3 of all waste generated by mining and mineral processing is potentially acid forming indicating the need for correct identification and management. Problems associated with simple application of 'absolute' acid-base criteria for classifying acid forming material are highlighted and the need for developing site specific or 'relative' criteria is discussed and illustrated by case study.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to assist explorationists and entrepreneurs in deciding whether to invest in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs) and, if so, in deciding which LDCs provide the best opportunity. The first decision is difficult in the face of common notions that foreigners are not welcome - only their money; that the best gold deposits were worked out long ago; that even if you survive the mal- aria, and in spite of 51% control by a national partner, you manage to profit from a new discovery, they will tax your operation to death, or worse yet, nationalize it. Close scrutiny of what happened to foreign investors in LDCs during the “Mexicanizationt” of the 1930's through the "Zambianization" of the 1970's shows that many of these concerns are well-founded historically. But the trend of knowledgeable writers over the past decade seems to be away from this gloomy foreboding, and towards a cautious optimism, based on recently perceptible metamorphoses in certain LDCs' conditions and attitudes. If the explorationist or entrepreneur decides to seize on this apparent opportunity, the second decision -- which of these certain LDCs to invest in -- is doubly difficult, because of the formidable tasks of coming up with a rating system to provide rational comparison, and then gathering enough current, reliable information to apply. EIA is a procedure aiming the elimination of adverse impacts to the environment from undertaken projects. Historically, it starts in 1969 when NEPA (Nat.Env.Prot.Agency) in the US initiated the EIA ? EIStatement. The EIA procedure was adapted by the European Union with the directive 337/85 and in Greece the Common Ministerial Decision 69269/90 enforced it to the Greek legislation. However, mining enterprises in Greece long before the implementation of the European Directive and in accordance to the legislation of the Public Law 998/79 for the protection of the forested lands were obliged to submit EIA?s and get an approval in order to operate in forested areas. The submitted and approved EIA?s and their implementation by the mining companies were among the positive aspects of the EIA procedures. This paper is examining the impacts of EIA?s in the Greek mining industry its positive aspects as well as their difficulties and their role for the reclamation procedure. The technical and procedural aspects which EIA presents for the mining industry are commented, while proposals, for a more flexible EIA implementation for the Greek Environment are also presented.

A study was conducted to determine the feasibility of using dense-medium centrifugation for separating fine (-150 µm) coal. A centrifuge provides the capability of varying the rotational speed and retention time independently, which offers the potential for a higher degree of control as compared to a dense-medium cyclone. Tests were conducted with a 140-mm diameter by 76-mm long Plexiglas separator, which was fitted with appropriate feed and discharge pipes to allow continuous separations to be made. A suspension of ultrafine (-10 µm) magnetite and water was used as the dense medium. The effects of operating conditions, including the magnitude of the 'g"-force and retention time, on centrifuge performance were investigated.

Introduction Clearly, many problems confront the minerals industry today. Yet, at the same time, there is too much energy spent bemoaning the negative effects of difficult economic circumstances, low metals prices, and adverse government policies. These are factors that cannot be altered by individual mineral company reactions. In fact, as we look to the future, the only thing we can be certain of is that we will continue to be faced with uncertainty. Thus, an area that demands close scrutiny and that can significantly affect a company's performance in the future is the posture it adopts to deal with uncertainty. This paper looks at how strategies are developing to deal with this issue. It also examines some of the implications that implementing such strategies have for the role of the individual explorationist. Elements of strategy Whether mineral company strategies are based on diversifying or retrenching, on emphasizing primary production or downstream integration, there seems to be increasing agreement that in the current environment strategies must have several features. They need to be information-based - developed out of access to timely and complete data and analysis about proposed directions and competitor activity, rather than simply following a current fashion. They need to be flexible - adaptable in light of changes in the marketplace and an unpredictable industry. And they need to be cost-efficient - making the most of limited resources. Whether a company is looking for gold financing opportunities, acquiring polymetallic prospects, or doing grassroots exploration for diamonds, these three elements are increasingly essential. They not only allow the company to pursue its current goals most expeditiously, but also open it to hearing and using feedback in the most constructive way. The company can then improve or change strategy as it proceeds. And it can be best positioned to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. These elements of strategy place great emphasis on the skills of the individual. The need for critical intelligence and the reduced amount of capital available to manage are making it more obvious that exploration is a "people" business. This is in accordance with a general trend in many sectors of industrialized economies, reflecting the widely discussed shift from smokestack to information-based industries. Increasing the odds There is a direct connection between successfully implementing the approaches to strategy discussed above and encouraging and improving the quality of work of the individual explorationist. To illustrate the importance of this, some commonly quoted figures on the odds of discovery success can be used. These figures are arbitrary but illustrative. Assume that one out of 100 exploration prospects actually turns out to be a promising ore body, and that one out of 1000 becomes a mine. Based on our research, chances are the most of those

"INTRODUCTION Electrification of the heavily trafficked Manchester to Preston route by Network Rail required the rehabilitation of the Victorian era Farnworth Tunnels to accommodate 21st century high speed trains. Network Rail, J. Murphy and Sons Ltd (JMS) and OTB Engineering Ltd (OTB) collaborated closely to complete these works in close proximity to heritage infrastructure whilst maintaining a rail service on the route. This significant challenge has been mastered by a combination of detailed investigation, complex modelling, robust design, extensive monitoring, ground treatment, secant piling, sprayed concrete, steel arches and segmental lining techniques. Investigation of the “Down” Tunnel found deformation and cracking of the lining and this was reconstructed during 11 weekend possessions. The “Up” Tunnel was filled with low strength concrete and a 9m diameter open face shield was used to construct an 8m diameter segmental lined tunnel during a 23 week blockade whilst traffic was maintained in the “Down” Tunnel. ELECTRIFICATION OF THE RAILWAY The Farnworth Tunnel project is part of the UK wide £1bn Railway Upgrade Plan to provide improvements throughout the rail network which includes the Manchester to Preston route. The project also supports the UK Government commitment to build a “Northern Powerhouse” by improving links that bind northern England together and which will help it release its full potential with a more balanced, healthier economy. The majority of the current UK rail network infrastructure resulted from the rapid growth of the railways in the mid to late 19th century which means that most of the existing tunnels are over 120 years old. Over the centuries the introduction of larger rolling stock has reduced the original clearances provided in tunnels. The electrification of a route requires that any over-line structures provide clearance for Overhead Line Equipment (OLE), new rolling stock and to meet modern standards. As part of Network Rail’s current electrification programme a further 36 tunnels have been identified on routes requiring electrification. Not of all these Victorian structures will require alterations to provide OLE clearance but the condition of the existing tunnels and modern fire / waterproofing requirements may ultimately dictate the need for rehabilitation."

The large open pit areas of surface mining as well as the huge quantities of residues generated during the digestion of bauxite with sodium hydroxide solution to produce alumina are considered as the most important environmental problems associated with the exploitation of bauxites. Aluminum of Greece, which is the only aluminum refinery in the country, located in Agios Nicolaos, Paralia Distomou, Viotia, produces almost 680.000 tones of bauxite residue annually which is pumped through pipes from the refinery to the sea bed of Antikira gulf. In order to avoid any kind of environmental problems related to this disposal method and to reduce the total volume of bauxite residue disposed of in the environment, Aluminium of Greece investigates several alternatives for bauxite residue utilization. In this framework, it also examines the potential use of bauxite residues as a filler in abandoned mining open pits. Bauxite residues are mainly composed of fine particles of silica, aluminum, iron, calcium and titanium oxides and hydroxides. Furthermore, the material presents low hydraulic conductivity, slightly higher than the limit posed for low permeability layers by the EC landfill directive. Based on these properties the dry disposal method was selected for disposing bauxite residues in mining open pits since it has many advantages such as reduced overall disposal cost, effective use of land and minimum environmental impacts. The results obtained for this method, which is investigated at demonstration scale, are presented in this paper.

'IM existing predictive methods were chosen for evaluation; an influence function (Bals Theory) and a profile function (hyperbolic). These ere applied to several field measured subsidence profiles over United States coal mines. The effect of homogeneous versus non-homogeneous overburden on surface subsidence is demonstrated and the utilization of Bals Theory as a subsidence predictive method for both types of overburden is examined. The major factor affecting subsidence profile characteristics is the migration of the inflection point toward the centerline of the longwall panel. A computer program was written to aid in the analysis.

Blasting can create severe interference for a mine's carbon monoxide based fire detection system. At the present time, without being able to differentiate between blast and non-blast carbon monoxide, a fire detection system must either set fairly high alarm levels for its sensors, or allow frequent "false" alarms to sound during blasting. This paper will introduce current work being done which will attempt to define characteristics of the carbon monoxide concentrations time curve for blasting. The work uses drift blasting for its data base as it is one of the more common forms of blasting. Future work with the data may produce a mathematical model which can be used to monitor and identify the carbon monoxide time curve for drift blasting.

INTRODUCTION High energy breaking is an alternative to using ex¬plosives in underground secondary breaking operations. It also is a means of upgrading conventional hand-held breakers, manual sledge-hammer breaking, and scaling bar operations. Major areas of application are in sec¬ondary breaking over grizzlies and at drawpoints. Other applications include breaking down ripping lips in longwall seam mining, scaling in stopes and rooms, general demolition work, and roadway maintenance. There is considerable interest in high-energy impact breakers for use in primary ore breaking, but, as of 1977, all such applications have been only experimental (duToit, 1973; Joughin, 1976; Wayment and Grantmyre, 1976). EQUIPMENT Essentially, a high-energy impact hammer is a boom¬mounted pneumatically or hydraulically actuated breaker. The machine basically consists of a piston that oscillates in a housing and impacts the end of a tool or moil thrust against the rock. The force applied to the rock primarily depends upon the impact energy of the piston-the higher the impact or blow energy, the greater the force and, thus, the greater the rock break¬age. Among drill and breaker designers, a common expression for blow energy is "force of blow." Hand-held breakers are limited to blow energies of about 140 J (100 ft-lb), because the operator is unable to handle heavier machines efficiently or to absorb the recoil energy resulting from higher blow energies. How¬ever, these restrictions do not apply to boom mounted breakers; machines with blow energies on the order of 4000 J (3000 ft-lb) and higher are available commer¬cially for underground use. There is considerable evi¬dence to show that increasing the blow energy also in¬creases the efficiency of the breaking operation; i.e., more rock is broken per unit of energy expended (Grantmyre and Hawkes, 1975). Thus, there is a trend to higher blow-energy machines, particularly where high¬strength rocks are to be broken. In relation to rock breaking, the blow rate of boom¬mounted impact breakers is not as important as it is for rock drills. This is because the breaker must be moved over the work surface between blows. The blow rate is governed eventually by the power supply, and typical blow rates range between 200 and 600 blows per minute. As a general rule, light blow-energy machines have higher blow rates than heavier machines. Table 1 lists most of the boom-mounted impact breakers that were available commercially during 1977, and it gives details of the blow energies and machine weights. Restrictions are placed on the blow energy by the machine weight and size, and by the strength of the boom. Typically, boom-mounted impact hammers have a blow-energy to mass ratio of about 1.5, with lower values for lighter machines and higher values for heavier machines. In addition to supporting the hammer weight, the boom also has to absorb the recoil energy of the blow, which can be on the order of 1400 J (1000 ft-lb) for large hammers operating in a horizontal mode. Interesting exceptions to the general run of impactors are the Joy HEFTI hydraulic hammers. In these machines, the piston impacts onto a fluid cushion that is positioned between the piston and the impact tool. This approach allows very high piston velocities, over 30 m/s (100 fps), to be used without the risk of break¬ing the piston or impact tool. Steel on steel impacts must be limited to impact velocities of about 10 m/s (35 fps) due to the high impact stresses generated; thus, increased blow energies can be achieved only by increas¬ing the piston size. The Joy 514 HEFTI®, listed in Table 1, has a blow energy of 27 100 J (20,000 ft-lb), but, as of 1977, the machine has been used underground only on an experimental basis. Using a fluid cushion between the piston and the impact tool allows the use of light pistons, reducing the overall machine weight. The recoil energy, which must be absorbed by the boom for a given blow energy, is directly proportional to the piston to machine mass ratio, and operating with light pistons provides an addi¬tional benefit in reducing the requisite boom size. Both pneumatic and hydraulic hammers are avail¬able commercially. Although hydraulic hammers are a relatively recent development, they already outnumber the pneumatic machines in use. The Seismic Interactive Interpretation Workstation (S//W) provides a wide spectrum of utilities ranging from improving field acquisition techniques, data processing and interpretation of coal seismic data. The power of the workstation lies in the interpretation process where various sets of geophysical and geological data are integrated to form a network of information that is stored in a database. Computer models are generated from known borehole and geologic information and later cross-correlated with the processed seismic data. Structural and stratigraphic modeling techniques add another dimension to the interpretation process. Complex trace attributes highlight subtle features not easily observed in black and white sections. Using the computer workstation, the explorationist gains valuable insight and conducts more intelligent interpretation of seismic data through a more comprehensive network of data analysis.

"Project-specific optimized tunnel boring machines represent the spearhead of technological progress in tunneling because with their use, very long-lasting, high quality tunnel structures in almost any geology, depth and topography can be produced with a high degree of automation. The mechanized excavation of tunnel structures ensures the greatest possible environmental protection during tunneling itself. Professional, systematic and high quality rebuilds and reuse of already proven equipment also ensures maximum efficiency in the use of materials and energy resources. It offers an enormous potential for a highly optimized environmental balance. Here the manufacturers of tunnel boring machines and their users in particular have a duty to ensure transparent, high quality and binding standards in the entire rebuild cycle and in the refurbishment management of innovative tunneling technology. This paper deals with the comprehensive processes with rebuild levels of tunnel boring machines and highlights some exemplarily implemented projects. 1 INTRODUCTION All over the world, the number of tunnel boring machines (TBM) in which equipment rebuilds from previous projects are re-used has increased over the last few years. This text presents the technical and economical aspects of this market development. It also takes a look at the practical implementation of rebuild measures. The ""ITAtech Guidelines on Rebuilds of Machinery for Mechanized Tunnel Excavation"" from 2015 lay down the requirements that the machine manufacturers must meet. 2 ECONOMICAL AND ECOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF RE-USING COMPONENTS The globalization of the construction sector and the consideration of environmental aspects promote an increased re-use of machines and machine components. Nowadays, large-scale construction projects are often carried out by international joint ventures of several individual companies that are established specifically for this purpose. After the completion of the project, the joint ventures are dissolved and they liquidate their project-specific equipment, such as tunnel boring machines. Today, it is much more uncommon for such machines to remain permanently in the possession of construction companies. Joint ventures offer TBMs on the free market, or they exercise contractually agreed repurchase options with the manufacturer. On the whole, this increases the number of re-usable components or complete tunneling systems available on the market."

For the environmentally safe management of the sulphidic waste rock produced from the Stratoni mining facilities, TVX Hellas has examined, within the frame of the funded European research program ROLCOSMOS, the effectiveness of an alternative rehabilitation scheme involving the segregation of the sulphide rich components of waste rock and the engineered application of alkaline additives. The examined waste rock management scheme was evaluated with laboratory test work followed by pilot-scale field applications. In this paper, the results from the two-year monitoring period of the pilot scale application are presented.

Changes in the ore types available and increased environmental concern have created a demand for an alternative technology to cyanide for the extraction of gold from ore. Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (Great Lakes) believes that halogen chemistry, in particular bromine chemistry, is the best available alternative to cyanide for gold extraction. Great Lakes is a Fortune 500 chemical company with sales of approximately one billion dollars per year. Great Lakes extracts elemental bromine from naturally occurring brines in Southern Arkansas. Great Lakes has developed a family of proprietary bromine compounds to aid in the extraction of gold. In addition to proprietary bromine compounds for gold extraction, Great Lakes has developed a method of recycling bromide ion in the leach circuit. Various recovery methods, including ion exchange and solvent , extraction are currently being studied.

Wastewater sludge is a problem for environmental control and it is necessary alternative researches for its reuse. Industries can research the association of clay and sewage sludge as a source of ceramic mass. This procedure can contribute for the industry sustainability including in its raw materials, wastes of environmental concern. This paper presents the results of sewage sludge and clays characterization being analyzed particle size distribution (sedimentation), mineralogical (X-ray diffraction), chemical composition (X-ray fluorescence), thermal analysis, density, and Atterberg proprieties (liquid and plastic limit; plasticity index) and also their applications in ceramics. Results were used to determine moisture for mass of raw material and sewage sludge and there were realized tests of fired in kiln at temperatures used in ceramic industry for bricks production. In the test pieces were analyzed the properties for application as bricks.

Existing process technologies for the production of soda ash from trona involves dissolution in hot brine, sedimentation and filtration for the removal of impurities, and subsequent crystallization for the recovery of soda ash. In this regard, mining and operating costs, particularly energy costs, are higher than desired. A preferred processing strategy might be to remove gangue mineral contaminants from the plant feed prior to dissolution in hot brine. Such a preprocessing strategy at ambient temperature and pressure has been limited by the lack of satisfactory process technology. Now based on recent results from laboratory research at the University of Utah it seems that the run-of-mine trona ore can be treated at ambient temperature and pressure using a special flotation procedure to separate the gangue minerals and make a trona concentrate with a purity of almost 99% trona at a recovery of more than 97%. The concept of such a new processing strategy is discussed with respect to current plant practice.

The minerals industry contributes to the economic growth, prosperity and quality of life of nations, particularly in areas where there might be limited opportunities for employment in other sectors. However, notwithstanding their economic importance, the minerals extraction and processing industries are considered to have significant impacts on the surrounding environment. In recent years many mines have implemented modern monitoring technology and modelling of the monitored environmental parameters to provide scientifically proven indicators about the state of the environment. The flexibility required by the minerals industry to respond dynamically to a changing natural, social and economic environment has become a major consideration. Whilst the notion of continuous improvement is embodied within most environmental management systems, what is now required is a structured audit trail which tracks the flow of resources through the production process to the ultimate environmental impact associated with their consumption, transformation and disposal. Imperial College is coordinating an EC funded project, which is developing a methodology to minimise the ?full life-cycle? impact of metalliferous mining projects, adopting an integrated approach to production and process design, and the costs involved. In order to develop a life cycle assessment (LCA) system that will incorporate different types of data related to the minerals extraction operations, a data inventory was designed and coded in an object-relational database model. The calculation procedures accounting for the input/output balance of the alternative scenarios for mining production, processing, waste disposal, monitoring, and their financial implications are being programmed into a software system. This paper presents the rational and innovative aspects of this work. The methodology developed for the life cycle database is illustrated for the mining production and gaseous emissions components of the system.

New Zealand has been a significant producer of gold for over a century. Total recorded production is over 850 tonnes. There were three major periods of production: the first and biggest was between 1860 and 1880, the second was between 1895 and 1920 and the third was between 1930 and 1945. After 1945 gold production fell continually until 1980 when the major upward adjustment in gold price led to renewed interest. There have been important new developments in each of the known gold-rich areas: Westland, Otago and Coromandel and exploration for gold in these areas and in previously unprospected regions has reached unprecedented levels. In Westland over 140 gold processing plants are each producing between two and six ounces a day from low-grade placers. A major gold dredging operation will soon be producing over a tonne of gold annually and other new dredges are proposed. There are still vast reserves of gold-bearing gravels in Westland and prospecting is continuing to reveal new resources. In the Reefton area there is renewed interest in gold-bearing quartz reefs which were the source of over a million ounces of gold between 1900 and 1951. New large opencast reserves are now defined.
