A novel impedance probe has been commissioned specifically for capturing fast dynamic information about filtration processes. It provides an attractive alternative to more complex measurement techniques in situations where the slurry system is primarily one-dimensional. The probe can monitor mud-line, slurry densification and drainage. Dynamic variations in cake permeability are obtained by combining dynamic mud-line information obtained with the probe and filtrate rate data derived from a leaf test apparatus. The measurements are re-viewed in relation to micro structural measurements obtained on iron ore filter cakes. The practical significance of these measurements for optimization of the filtration process is discussed.

Changes and the pace of change in China’s coal industry have been extraordinary during the past several years. At least 35 of the 94 former coal bureaus have been restructured into different mining companies and groups. Some of the more productive and efficient ones were further strengthened through consolidation and expansions. And several have even formed, or are in the process of forming, strategic alliances with utility companies, railroads, ports and chemical companies to secure additional reserves and coal sales. In addition, the improvement in coal pricing during the past two years has enabled China’s coal industry to move ahead with some needed changes. Coal mining accidents, though, remain a major concern for the Chinese government. Accidents remain high even though the government has made efforts to shutdown more than 55,000 unlicensed, unsafe small coal operations throughout the country.

The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has demonstrated a prototype hydrogen-fueled mining vehicle as an alternative to diesel equipment in underground mines. Safety and control systems were added to allow a 70-kW rubber-tired hydrogen vehicle, originally developed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and Hydrogen Consultants, Inc. (now Hydrogen Components, Inc., of Littleton, CO), to be tested. This work began in late 2000 and culminated with a Mine Safety and Health Administration fire safety review and field tests at the Stillwater Mine in Nye, MT, in 2004.

Were the legislators and politicians responsible for the closing of the U.S. Department of the Interior?s Bureau of Mines (Bureau) in March 1996 fully aware of what they were doing? Throughout the United States? history, the domestic mining and minerals industry has been largely responsible for the nation?s growth and prosperity that had made it a world leader. The mining and minerals industry made it possible for the young nation to catch up with Europe during the Industrial Revolution, played an essential role leading to victories in World Wars I and II and was a core ingredient for continued economic growth. For a number of decades, America?s import dependency on non-fuel mineral materials has continued to increase. (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries). Developing domestic resources to meet current and future demands ? particularly those resources considered to be of strategic and critical value to national security ? is necessary. Federal involvement is required since many of these resources are located on public lands. Another reason for federal involvement is that the success of the industry depends on long-range research programs and advances that may take up to 25 years to become commercially available. This situation requires federal partnership to coordinate the programs necessary to collectively involve the industry, individual mining companies and colleges and universities. So, how was it possible to close a federal agency that had contributed so much to the nation?s welfare in a mandated 90-day period, with more than 1,200 employees losing their jobs?

Because of its small interburden thickness, concentrated stress distributions, high coal seam metamorphism, and complex geological conditions, mining the five coal seams (Nos. 5, 7, 8, 9 and 12) of Kaiping coalfield is difficult. Kaiping coalfield is located within 80 m in the Kailuan Group. The overburden caving caused by mining the five coals seams was measured using ZTR12 geological penetration radar (GPR) survey combined with borehole observations. The development characteristics of full-cover rock fractures after mining were obtained from the GPR scan, which provides a measurement basis for the control of rock strata in close multiple-seam coal mining. For the first time, it was found that the overburden caving pattern shows a periodic triangular caved characteristic. Furthermore, it is proposed that an upright triangular collapsed rock pile and an inverted triangular area with larger fragments piled up alternately appear in the lower gob. The research results show that the roof structure formed in the gob area can support the key overlying strata, which is beneficial to ensure the integrity and stability of the upper coal seams in multiple-seam mining of close-coal seams.

9K medium was used to isolate iron-oxidizing bacteria from 27 sump water samples collected from Dexing Cop-per Mine, Chengmen Mountain Mine and Yin Mountain Mine, Jiangxi Province, China. Lead acetate and silver nitrate were used to enrich metal-resistant iron-oxidizing bacteria from the above water samples. Isolate 16 was isolated from the sample taken at Dexing Copper Mine. Growth experiments indicated that when incubated under lead acetate (3,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation, while isolate H1, a less resistant strain taken at Yin Mountain Mine, had a tolerance level of only 400 mg/L. When assayed with other metals, i.e., Ag+ (240 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.9 mg/L), Cu2+ (32,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (22,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation while, on the other hand, isolate H1 exhibited much lower tolerance levels, i.e., Ag+ (60 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.1 mg/L), Cu2+ (19,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (13,500 mg/L). Based on 16S rDNA sequence data, isolate 16 and H1 were both identified as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans.

Additional field evaluations of a modified continuous miner using a new spray system and modified scrubbers have been conducted by the authors. In this demonstration, a comprehensive package for dust control on a continuous miner which included previously developed modifications to the scrubber, scrubber intakes and the innovative chassis spray system was demonstrated. Side-by-side comparisons of the modified miner and regular miner indicated that the miner operator with the modified miner was exposed to 62% less respirable dust. Ram car operators with the modified miner had 38% less respirable dust exposure and the return air on the modified miner had 19% less respirable dust. The mining conditions during side-by-side testing were very comparable. These results support the findings of the modified spray system studies conducted earlier at different mines in Illinois on four occasions and the modified scrubber system field evaluation studies.

Introduction A subject long debated but rarely resolved involves the interaction between the academic community and industry in the sponsorship and conduct of research. The subject is, unfortunately, too often treated as a controversy involving ethics and the profit motive. But, in fact, the two branches of society - industry and academia - are necessarily part of the same system. In the last 25 years, the realization has developed that research alone is not sufficient to bring about use of those results to benefit society through productivity gains and economic growth. The flow of events shown in Fig. 1 was generally believed to be the steps required for reaping the benefits of research. Today, research still has the very important role of creating new information or new ideas. However, it is recognized to be but one of many steps in a process that we now refer to as technological innovation. Charpie (1967) said, "Technological innovation is the driving force behind economic growth in the US. In this context, innovation means the process by which a new idea is successfully translated into economic impact within our own society, by providing better products, and simultaneously creating new jobs in the manufacturing of those products. Only after an investigation is put into sufficient use to have an economic effect, is it termed an innovation." One of the best depictions of the technological innovation process is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These are adapted from Haeffner (1975), and modified by the Committee on Mineral Technology of the National Research Council (1981). Figure 2 identifies the many steps involved in the process. It designates a generalized form for interaction between the academic community and industry. Figure 3 identifies the steps in the "innovation activity" box of Fig. 2. Academia is generally responsible for developing of new knowledge and ideas, as well as maintaining and enlarging the collected body of scientific knowledge. Industry is responsible for developing new products, methods, and processes. Both institutions operate for the benefit of society, but under different driving forces. Introduction An integrated oil company has two options in approaching strategic planning. It has to decide whether it is in business for the long-term. I state this in all seriousness. Those who help manage public companies have the responsibility of good stewardship of other people's money. We must decide whether continued investment in our basic business will generate a reasonable rate of return. With a world surplus of petroleum production capacity, and continuing downward pressure on prices, this question should be addressed by all oil companies. And a positive answer is not necessarily a foregone conclusion in all cases. The decision should be made based on proven competence in finding and developing petroleum reserves on a cost-competitive basis with other producers, and on a frank analysis of future prospects. This should include a realistic assessment of the projected rate of return on specific investment projects. If a company did not pass these tests, its strategy could take one of four paths. Diversification First, it could diversify. But recent history suggests that oil companies are not good at managing other businesses. Second, it could seek a buyer for its business at the optimum return for its owners. Third, it could sell its assets on a piecemeal basis. And, fourth, it could adopt a longer-range plan of self-liquidation by living off current recoverable reserves. In other words, by not investing in exploration and development, it could maximize short-term profit and pass the money back to shareholders in the form of dividends. The Conoco component of DuPont has a below-average cost of finding petroleum, a good track record of efficient production, and a full plate of projects that pass the test of return-on-investment. In short, Conoco is in business for the long-term. That fact, in itself, determines at least one key element in strategy. This is to extend the life of the petroleum reserve base while at the same time maintaining maximum efficient rates of production to provide a strong cash flow. A company that is able to maintain a strong reserve base will ultimately see the value of those reserves escalate as world oil supplies tighten. Our planners expect this tightening to occur within the next decade as demand grows and production in non-OPEC areas of the world begins to decline. An exploration program tailored to meet the requirements of reserve replacement and current production should have two basic parts. Breaks in coal slurry impoundments can threaten the lives and health of area residents, destroy homes and businesses and contaminate water supplies. This dangerous potential looms over coalmining regions in West Virginia and throughout Appalachia. The Coal Impoundment Project was begun in June 2003 to provide an inventory and mapping of active and abandoned impoundments in West Virginia. The project also provides the public with specific information about the impoundments in their communities. It is dedicated to alerting residents of danger and evacuation plans, reducing risk to residents and finding alternatives to impoundments. Since its first year, more than 100 impoundment sites have been added to the project’s Website.

Vertical circular shafts have been proposed for multiple access to high level nuclear waste deep geologic repositories. Shaft construction is a critical path item in the commissioning of a repository. Other constraints on the shaft design and construction criteria include the lack of design precedence for long term performance and the importance of minimizing rock and groundwater disturbance. A comparative evaluation of conventional and mechanized shaft sinking techniques is presented in the context of the particular geologic and design constraints. Technical and non-technical factors for blind drilling, blind boring, raise-reaming, drill-and-blast and ream-and slash methods are reviewed for typically "hard rock" and "salt" type repository sites. Appropriate shaft designs are developed, the suitability of each method to the particular requirements evaluated and construction costs and schedules determined. The explicit appraisal of the significant design factors for each method serves as a rational basis for the preliminary selection of the most suitable sinking technique for a particular set of site/design conditions.

Concentration and composition of rare earth elements (REE) and major elements in the sediment samples from the IOM H11 Fe-Mn nodule deposit, eastern part of the Clarion-Clipperton nodule field (located between the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone - CCFZ; tropical Pacific), have been studied. We show the controls on REE concentrations and described vertical/horizontal variability of selected metals in pelagic sediments from the CCFZ. According to Kato et al. (2011), who analyzed 2000 seafloor sediment samples at 78 sites of the Pacific Ocean, deep-sea mud shows high concentrations (2230 ppm maximum) of ?REY and could be potential resource of these elements in the future. However, our work does not fully confirm that sediments in the IOM H11 are significantly enriched in REE.

Copper and cobalt can be found on nickel laterite ores, and cobalt can be found also on copper ores, and many contaminants such as iron, aluminum, and magnesium are associated with these ores. In hydrometallurgical process, a purification step is necessary after leaching due to the presence of these impurities. Chelating resins are more selective for some metals than others, making them more efficient than cationic resins. This overview discusses chelating resin applications to recover copper, nickel, and cobalt from mining process and mining tailings and the effect of contaminants in leach solution. Chelating resins with iminodiacetate functional group can be used for selective copper recovery, and both iminodiacetate and bis-picolylamine resins are highly selective for nickel and cobalt. Chelating resins with the same functional group can have different performances on the kinetics of loading, because of variations of structure, the density of functional group, and degree of cross-linking. This article reviews commercial chelating resins that can be applied in leach solutions with different compositions, and also possible innovations for uses of chelating resins to recover metals from mining process and mining tailings.

Gold Fields acquired an option to purchase the Cerro Corona project, located in Hualgayoc, Cajamarca Department, Peru, in December 2003. In January 2006, the option was taken up and the transaction closed. During the intervening months, project development occurred against the backdrop of a presidential election, increasing national social activism and environmental regulation, rapidly escalating operating and capital costs, as well as an unprecedented demand for engineering and technical skills. Project “Lessons Learned” are discussed in the context of an evolving strategy. The Cerro Corona project forms part of a porphyry copper-gold deposit situated within the Hualgayoc Mining District in northern Peru. It is located in the highest part of the Western Cordillera of the Andes, close to the headwaters of the Atlantic Continental Basin. It lies approximately 90 km (56 miles) by road north of the Department of Cajamarca’s capital city and near the village of Hualgayoc. Access to the Cerro Corona project from Cajamarca is by two roads, one from Cajamarca to the Yanacocha Mine 45 km (28 miles), and then from Yanacocha to the village of Hualgayoc and the town of Bambamarca 45 km (28 miles).

Binders have been suggested as an aid for agglomeration to improve copper recovery in heap leaching operations. However, it has not been established if the use of binders would negatively affect the solvent extraction process, which is used to purify the pregnant leach solution from the heaps and remove any contaminants. Such negative effects would lead to an increase in processing costs or a decreased in copper production. The controlled studies reported here have shown that some binders (a polyacrylamide and a waste treatment additive) did not interfere with the solvent extraction process. Other binders (a polyvinyl acetate emulsion and tall oil pitch) negatively impacted copper solvent extraction and, therefore, should not be used in copper heap leaching plants.

INTRODUCTION This paper summarizes the result of a two and a half year research program. The objective of the research was to develop a fundamental understanding of the Rib-in-Roc method. Through the development of a new model technology, namely three-dimensional physical models which powerfully exploit the results of dimensional analysis Stillborg, Stephansson and Swan (1), it has been possible to establish the contribution to both permanent and immediate stabilization of a large underground opening pre-reinforced by the Rib-in-Roc method. Using the results from these physical models and earlier work by Stillborg and Stephansson (2) and Åkesson (3), a conceptual synthesis is given in this paper so demonstrating the Rib-in-Roc method to be a practical working system of pre-reinforcement. DESCRIPTION OF THE RIB-IN-ROC METHOD To give the reader an idea of how this method of pre-reinforcement is performed, a short description will be given, Figure 1. Before any full-scale excavation takes place an entry is made in the host rock and rib raises are driven around the proposed opening. These raises are made at a spacing that is dependent upon rock quality; an opening in poor rock needs more ribs per length of opening. As the ribs are driven they are used as a site from which very competent rock bolting can be done. As a rib is excavated it is filled with reinforced concrete. Finally after having in this way reinforced the zone around the proposed opening, (a reinforced arch is formed) the displacements are automatically controlled as the opening is being excavated. Using this method openings with a span of 50-60 meters (160-200 ft) and a height of 60-80 meters (200-260 ft) are likely to be realised.

To accommodate growth in air service and to follow the Master Plan for long-term airport development, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority established thed2 Development Program at Washington Dulles International Airport. A sub-surface Automated People Mover (APM) System is under construction to replace the Mobile Lounges as the primary people mover system at Dulles. To minimize disruption to airport operations the majority of the APM System’s crossings of Taxi lanes will be undertaken using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) or the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). This paper explores the planning and design of these shallow tunnel segments for future generation aircraft loads, within the constraints of minimal construction access under post 9/11 security requirements and the context of the overall airport expansion program.

A qualitative test program was sponsored jointly by the University of Alaska and Eriez Magnetics, in order to study placer gold nugget recovery using an eddy-current separator. Various gold nuggets from Alaska, ranging from 6.4 mm to 63.5 mm in size, were tested. All testing was performed using an Eriez Laboratory ESC, Model REA, fitted with 2000 gauss, surface field strength magnetic rotor. The belt speed was set to 91 meters per minute and the rotor speed was set to 2500 rpm in the forward direction. The splitter was adjusted to just reject the largest pieces of rock that measured an average 76 mm x102 mm x 127 mm. Based on the results of this limited test work, it can be recommended to placer gold mine operators, that Eriez Magnetics ECS technology is a viable and practical concentration technology for coarse gold recovery. Silver and platinum were also tested.

"Seafloor mining provides significant potential economic benefits for many Pacific nations that may be "land poor" but "coastline rich," meaning they have the potential to utilize and profit from the mineral wealth within their Exclusive Economic Zones that extend 200 nautical miles (360 km) out from their coastlines. The Independent State of Papua New Guinea (the State) recognizes this tremendous opportunity and is taking a leadership role in this emerging industry by becoming a 15% partner in Solwara 1 (with an option to increase their investment to 30%).The Solwara 1 Project has been gaining momentum since Nautilus Minerals and the State signed an Agreement on April 24. This new agreement with the State in which they have staked a minimum 15% interest as a meaningful partner, underscores the State’s continued and widespread support for the Project. Signing of this Agreement was a historical occasion and a milestone achievement for Nautilus Minerals and the people of PNG.The machinery being built for the Solwara 1 Project is taking shape. The Seafloor Production Tools are now over 90 percent complete. Assembly of the biggest tool, the Bulk Cutter, was completed in April this year and assembly work on the Collecting Machine and the Auxiliary Cutter commenced in May and June this year respectively. The Riser and Lifting system, which will be used to transfer the mined material from the seafloor to the surface within an enclosed system, is over 50 percent complete. The critical path for the Solwara Project is to secure a suitable vessel arrangement. Nautilus aims to have this completed by the end of this year."
