During developing the Ingulska mine at the Mi-churinske uranium deposit in the central part of Ukraine the radioactive rock dumps have been piled. A height of dumps reaches to 15-25m. They occupy a large territory and can be a source of covering with radioactive dust the area around the Ingulska mine. Uranium content exceeds 0,01% in all dump rocks samples while in the dust fraction samples it ranges from 0,01 to 0,06%. Uranium content in road dust at the dump?s foot reaches 0,137%. A new (for Ukraine) method of f-radiography of tree and bush leaves sampled at the territory about 100km2 has been used. It is based on fission of 235U nucleuses due to heat neutron influence in a nuclear reactor and on following study of the Lausan films with tracks drawn by the fractures of these nucleuses. Uranium content of the dif-fusion-disseminated dust type is (0.9-22.2)?10-6% while in the individual particles it can be considered much more because of burned holes in Lavsan above them. The dust content with uranium in Kirovograd reaches to 20-50 part/cm2 while near the dumps it ranges from 100 part/cm2 to 300 part/cm2 in the radius of 1,5-2km from the Ingulska mine.

"The McCook Main Tunnel connects Chicago’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir. The tunnel system consists of a 10 m (33 ft) finished diameter and 490-m (1,600-ft) long hard-rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5-m (90-ft) diameter and 92 m (300 ft) deep main gate shaft. The gate shaft houses six high-head 4.4 x 9 m (14.5 x 29.5 ft) wheel gates installed in the bifurcated and steel-lined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir. Construction of the McCook Main Tunnel in live flow conditions was a challenging task for the McCook Main Tunnel Project participants, the project owner U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), local sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, designer Black & Veatch and contractor Kiewit Infrastructure Co. (Kiewit). Once completed in two stages in 2017 and 2029, the McCook Reservoir will hold 38 billion L (10 billion gal) of combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flood waters from the city of Chicago and 36 surrounding communities in Cook County, IL The construction of the tunnel system was divided into two contracts. The first contract for the gate and construction access shaft was completed in August 2011. The second contract included tunnel excavation and concrete and steel lining that was completed in September 2014; installation of gates and hydraulic cylinders that was completed in June 2017; and the last major construction activity was the removal of a temporary concrete plug (bulkhead) and lining that tunnel section to bring the overall tunnel and gates system online before Dec. 31, 2017.This article focuses on the installation, testing and commissioning of the high head wheel gates. Live tunnel connection details to TARP Mainstream Tunnel were addressed in a previous paper submitted at the World Tunneling Conference in 2016."

In this part of the two-part paper we discuss briefly the adaptation of the comminution model to describe the observed behavior of an industrial grinding circuit. Although reported verification of comminution models for continuous systems is limited, some interesting work has been reported 1,2 recently. The data acquisition and modeling efforts are described first, followed by discussion of some of the simulation results. Observations pertinent to steady-state operation are presented followed by a description of the application of a dynamic model of the grinding circuit for synthesis and evaluation of grinding-circuit control. The pilot-scale work indicated the comminution model should be capable of describing an industrial size-reduction process. Recognizing the broad utility of a process model based on first- principles, the Industrial Nucleonics Corporation of Columbus, Ohio, embarked on a joint program with the Duval Corporation of Tucson, Arizona, to evaluate the industrial applicability of the models described in Part I. This program was conducted in a grinding circuit, which included a rod mill 12.5 feet in diameter and 16 feet long and a ball mill 12.5 feet in diameter and 14 feet long, at Duval Corporation's Esperanza property3. The rod mill was operated in open circuit and the ball mill in closed circuit with cyclone classifiers.

DTX is a 1.3-mile-long rail extension being constructed by Transbay Joint Powers Authority to extend Caltrain rail service and future California High Speed Rail service to downtown San Francisco. It includes a 3,352-foot-long mined tunnel with a cross section varying from 50 to 60 feet wide and 43 feet high to accommodate two- and three-rail tracks. DTX will be excavated in mixed-face and Franciscan Formation with ground cover ranging from 40 to 85 feet. This paper discusses how mined tunnel design has evolved since the initial preliminary design phase over 10 years ago. The current design concept for tunnel construction is also discussed.

THE PLANNED MAINTENANCE PROGRAM All concentrators should start with a planned maintenance program from day one. Every- body thinks they have a program in place before start-up, but in reality, most have only a fraction of what is needed to avoid the "Post Start-up Disaster" (PSD) - two years for start-up is not that uncommon. An effective program has all of the following: (1) Good people. (2) Area Maintenance. (3) Good PM Checklists. (4) Daily Work Schedules. (5) Written Work Orders. (6) Equipment Histories. (7) Backlog Control. The installation of a workable program takes hard work, talent, and commitment. You have to know what you are doing (hard work will not replace talent). Good People Good people are available in any location if you make the effort. Always check references carefully (both superiors, peers and subordinates). Was the last concentrator they worked at successful? Was it clean? Find out! Success or failure follows people around. I know people who are experts on PSD because they have lived through it three or four times. You need some college trained people with hands-on experience. There are no secrets, you have to make the effort. If you make a mistake in hiring (and you probably will), make the tough decision necessary to rectify it quickly. Area Maintenance Area maintenance refers to organization of supervision such that one person is uniquely accountable for every inch of ground and piece of equipment. This study intends to demonstrate the engineering application of ground penetrating radar (GPR) that would enable site engineers to prevent the high cost of blind drilling. At the tailing dump located in Zhairem Mining and Processing Plant, the challenge of sheet pile driving is encountered due to the indefinite watertight clay layer deposition depth that serves as a protective layer against groundwater contamination. A numerical model of the soil underlying the tailing dump is built using the existing hole data to compare and confirm the existing geological cross sections for three profile lines along the south and southeast parts of the tailing dump. GPR is employed to investigate the subsoil geological structure and detect the watertight clay layer deposition. On the basis of radargrams tied to the existing borehole data in the numerical model, 21 drill hole locations are suggested to assess and confirm the clay layer depth along profile lines at the tailing dump. The drilling results of the suggested holes confirmed the expected depth of the clay layer. It is concluded that GPR is a practical and economic subsurface mapping method that can prevent the high cost of blind digging of the ground and orient the drilling operations effectively.

It is indeed an honor for White Pine, as a member of the copper mining industry, to participate in this Rapid Excavation Conference. Although our presentation, as the title indicates, is not a success story, we foresee, through our experience, future application of boring machines and rapid excavation equipment in the hard rock mining industry. One might ask what a copper mining company would be doing with boring machines and why the gamble on a high-cost, capital investment for a relatively untried application. Perhaps a little background on the White Pine mine and its geology will explain our daring and speculative motives. THE WHITE PINE MINE The White Pine Copper Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Copper Range Company, operates a mine, mill and smelter at White Pine, Michigan in the western Upper Peninsula approximately 6 miles due south of Lake Superior. We employ approximately 3,000 people from the surrounding area and mine approximately 25,500 tons of low grade (1%) copper ore per day. The orebody is contained within several distinct sedimentary horizons that comprise the lower 20 feet of a Precambrian formation known as the Nonesuch Shale. Numerous articles and reports have described many aspects of the White Pine operation and the geology. I will brief you only on that criteria which precipitated our interest in rapid excavation equipment and techniques, specifically, boring machines. The growing demand and a diminishing supply of conventional crude oil in North America are bringing about an ever increasing interest in the so-called "synthetic fuels". With one commercial plant already in full production, another in the planning and engineering stage, and still others being seriously considered, the Athabasca tar sands is proving to be a leading center of interest. Here, and in the closely related deposits, reserves in place total over 700 billion barrels.1 This major source of new oil is about ready to play a significant role in the filling of ever increasing market demand. When and if fully developed, the Athabasca tat sands could make both Canada and the United States substantially independent of all off-shore supplies of crude for many years to come. Its product, a high-quality, low-sulphur synthetic crude, is beginning to enter the market place at a most favourable time.

Spontaneous combustion presents a very serious hazard to both safety and economics of mining operations. Notwithstanding considerable research that has been done over the years to present and control spontaneous combustion the risk still exists. Consequently, this problem poses a major challenge to mine safety researchers; new and improved techniques are constantly being developed to deal with this major hazard. This paper reviews the current practices to prevent and control spontaneous combustion in coal mine operations highlighting new developments in this area. Research and development work presently being carried out in Canada to' deal with this problem is also discussed which includes monitoring, inertization and application of biotechnology.

The Galore Creek copper deposits lie in the Stikine River district of northwest British Columbia, a largely undeveloped region which possesses rugged mountain terrain with deeply incised valleys which support dense undergrowth. Timberline is normally at about 1300 m (4265 ft) and the higher levels contain glacial systems and large ice fields with peaks rising to 3500 m (I 1,483 ft). A location map of the Galore Creek area is given in Fig. 1. In the late 1920s, field parties under the direction of F.A. Kerr (1948) of the Geological Survey of Canada completed geological surveys of the district. Primary access for this work was provided by riverboats on the Stikine and Iskut Rivers. Kerr's party had to contend with extremely difficult travel conditions that required considerable backpacking, augmented by pack dogs in certain cases. Absence of ground control led Kerr to establish his own topographic maps. Among the geological data established was the recognition [ ] that small bodies of orthoclase porphyry in the district are often well mineralized with base metal sulfides. Copper mineralization in the upper Galore Creek valley, a tributary of Scud River which flows into the Stikine River some 80 km (50 miles) south of the small settlement of Telegraph Creek, was originally discovered during aerial reconnaissance by M. Morrison and W. Buckholz while prospecting for Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Co. Ltd. in 1955. Malachite- and azurite-stained out- crops in several parts of the Galore Creek watershed are clearly visible from distances of 500 m ( 1640 ft) or more. Claims were staked in 1956 and the copper showings were partly mapped, trenched, and investigated by shallow diamond drilling. Because of the remoteness of the area and higher priorities for expenditures elsewhere, no further work was undertaken and most of the claims were allowed to expire.

INTRODUCTION This paper traces the application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) at industrial and pilot scale in Australia. The Argyle Diamond Mine installed the first of two smooth segmented HPGRs during 1990 in an open-circuit secondary-tertiary crushing application to increase throughput. In 2002 a third HPGR was added to improve liberation and so increase the recovery of smaller diamonds. The latest improvements in wear technology (tyre with tungsten carbide studs) were incorporated in the design of this machine. Extensive HPGR pilot-plant trials were undertaken during the 1990s at both the Kalgoorlie Consolidate Gold Mine and the Boddington Gold Mine. The purpose of these trials was to evaluate HPGR as a method to increase throughput, as an alternative to SAG milling, and also to ascertain if downstream benefits existed. One of the challenges for HPGR circuit designers is to translate what occurs at small laboratory and pilot scale into what is likely to happen in a full-scale circuit. Scale-up from pilot machine results is normally recommended by manufacturers. However, such tests need relatively large quantities of material, particularly if meaningful data on wear are to be obtained. Laboratory tests are preferable, as they need relatively small quantities of ore, but may be questioned in terms of how they relate to full-scale operation. Modelling and simulation have played a particularly important role in this respect in Australia. Models are available which have proven to be very accurate at being able to scale throughput and specific energy response from laboratory to industrial machines. More recently, work in Australia has also been done in developing a model which has the potential to scale laboratory wear data as well.

The combined Bootstrap and Capstone deposits, located in the Bootstrap subdistrict (Section 10, T36N, R49E, M.D.B.M., Elko County, Nevada), are approximately 27 miles northwest of Ca-1I: Nevada. The contiguous Bootstrap Capstone deposits are located along the northeastern and northern flanks of Round Mountain, a horst block separated by grabens from the sheep Creek Mountains to the north-northwest and the Tuscarora Mountains to the east. Open-pit-minable gold reserves as of December, 1989, were 13.27 million short tons with an average grade of .057 troy ounces gold per ton and an overall waste-to-ore strip ratio of 2.5:1. Ore zones in Bootstrap are concentrated along north striking high-angle dikes localized along faults, while ore zones at Capstone are strata form and structural, occurring at the Devonian limestone/siliceous sediment interface and in high-angle fault-filling dikes. Pre-ore faulting produced a complex structural setting for Capstone, dominated by strong northwest fault sets cross-cut by northeasterly structures. Alteration associated with both deposits is silicification with a-strong argillic overprint. Dike emplacement, which post-dates silicification, marked the onset of mainstage gold deposition and argillic overprinting of silicified lithologies. Gold displays an affinity for moderately argillized sedimentary and igneous lithologies. Mineralogic and geochemical analyses of rotary percussion drill samples show good correlation between gold, silica, antimony, and arsenic.

INTRODUCTION This paper presents a method of calculation of internal moments and thrusts in tunnel liners of any material. The method is intended for hand calculation, but as it is numerical in nature it can be programmed for use in computers. The information required for design or analysis is presumed active internal and external pressures, the effective moment of inertia and cross-sectional area of the tunnel liner, the liner's modulus of elasticity, and the coefficient of subgrade reaction of the material surrounding the tunnel. Starting with active external and internal pressures and following the procedure described herein using the structural properties of the liner and surrounding medium, external passive reactions and internal moments and thrusts are calculated. The method is intended for use by design engineers. GENERAL Experience has shown that flexible tunnel liners have less internal bending stresses than those calculated using classical structural theory applied to free-standing arches. In fact, liners which are very flexible in relation to the surrounding soil or rock have virtually no bending moments when compared to free-standing arches supporting equal active loads. In order for this phenomenon to occur, the original active pressure diagram must be "modified" by additional external reactions (passive pressures) from the surrounding material, so that the thrust line within the lining follows the centroid of the tunnel arch more closely than that of a similar free-standing arch. Wide use of adsorption methods for metal recovery is one of the most important achievements of gold metallurgy of the last decades. Anion exchange resins or activated carbons may be used as adsorbents. This paper presents a brief overview of IRGIREDMET effotts on development, testing and implementation of techno­logical flowsheets using both adsorbent types and attempt to compare their technological properties. IRGIREDMET Institute was founded in 1871 as a laboratory for gold smelting and gold ore testing. In 1930 it obtained the status of the Research Institute. IRGIREDMET functioned as leading research center for gold mining industry in the former Soviet Union. At present it is the Open Joint Stock Company dealing with all s01t of research and design works for gold min­ing (ranging from geology to gold refinery). IRGIREDMET started development of ion exchange technol­ogy in 19641• The first stage of work (1964-1970) including development of principle flowsheet of RIP process was carried out jointly with the Moscow VNIIKHT Institute (All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Chemical Technology)2• The flowsheet of RIP process is presented in Fig. I and includes the following basic operations: gold adsorption from pulp; washing of loaded resin; acid treatment; thiourea adsorp­tion; gold elution by acid thiourea solution; resin washing to remove thiourea; alkaline treatment of resin; resin washing and gold recovery from eluates by electrowinning. The technology developed and equipment used were tested for treatment of clayey ore of Kuranakh deposit at a pilot plant of the Lebedinsky gold complex ("Aldanzoloto" company, Yakutia, Russia). The pilot plant throughput was 200 t/day. At the same time IRGIREDMET conducted the tests on ion exchange technology for ore and concentration products of oper­ating gold plants and for ores of new deposits. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were done and developed initial data and process design criteria for designing of 15 plans of the former Soviet Union. In the course of this work a great number of newly synthe­sized anion exchangers including strong and weak base resins was studied, the peculiarities of anion exchange resins using two different raw material types ( ores and concentrates includ­ing clayey, carbonaceous, silver bearing, arsenic, antimony and base metals bearing products); some theoretical regularities of adsorption process were investigated; the technology of two stage adsorption of gold and silver from silver gold ore, improved flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration, design of adsorption equipment including pulsation columns, design of electrowinning cells were developed; conditioning technology for pulp with complex ion composition prior to gold and silver adsorption was developed, etc.3·8• IRGIREDMET specialists took part in commissioning of practically all the plants in the former Soviet Union using RIP and RIL process including Lebedinsky, Kuranakh, Sovetsky, Karamken, Matrosov's plant and Mnogovershinny plants. Due to this works RIP process became standard technology for Russia and the CIS.

Managing commercial risks associated with subsurface construction may be the greatest challenge the underground industry faces. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) was developed in the U.S. to help manage those commercial risks, and to stem increasing litigation in the industry. A guidelines document by the American Society of Civil Engineers was published in 1997 and was updated in 2007. This paper provides an historical perspective, overviews the main objectives of a GBR, presents issues and trends that instigated the need to update the 2007 publication, and describes the process that will lead to a new GBR guidelines publication in 2022

Tunnel contracts often include provisions for pre-excavation probing and grouting for areas ahead of the tunnel heading. If grouting triggers are met, tunneling stops, and grouting is performed. There is substantial variation within the underground industry on what criteria are applied to the grout verification hole that is drilled post-grouting and before excavation resumes. The criteria for determination of the effectiveness should be dependent on the geology and local hydrogeologic conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present specific criteria that can be used by a practitioner to determine whether tunneling can resume or if additional grouting is required.

This paper presents talc milling guided by a theme of "So You Want to Be In The Talc Business". Such a theme strikes a cautionary note to warn the uninitiated of potential pitfalls, and this paper will cover briefly some of the technical traps as well as one of the larger talc milling operations. It is important to our purpose to pre- sent some of the market and mineral complications that make the business of producing and selling industrial talcs much more intricate than an outsider would perceive. Metal markets by comparison are great worldwide pools into which production streams of generally identical metals can flow over a weir of market prices. Industrial talc markets are not as well defined and often must be developed by the producer working closely with a specific customer or groups of customers to prove out the attributes of the specific product from a new property. All the negatives of a new market seem to work against the introductory talc in the forms of industry or customer reluctance to change, sales prices, cost of delivery, mode of transportation, health considerations of the minerals and many more. Just locating the potential customers for a new industrial talc may be a substantial undertaking. Thus, an analogy of the worldwide metal market might compare starting a new talc operation to trying to gather up enough fallen rain drops to be able to start a production stream of a worthwhile size.

Introduction Over the last five years, a large number of small- to medium-sized carbon-in-pulp treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 t/a and 1.5 Mt/a of ore. Because of the limited capital resources and tight cash-flow positions of these relatively small mining companies, the primary requirement was often to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost. Therefore, since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners represents an obvious and significant capital cost, most of these plants were built without thickeners or even detailed, cost-benefit analyses on their inclusion. In some cases, the increasing use of High Rate Thickeners (HRTs) in the mineral processing industries has, however, resulted in a reassessment, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas where borefields are costly to install and water is limited. With the startup and operation of these installations, the resulting significant savings in cyanide consumption has been recognized, in many situations, as a primary justification for the installation of HRTs. Solution balances Degradation of cyanide occurs in the tailings water discharge to slime dams. The degree of degradation (cyanide loss) in the water recovered depends on a number of factors, but it is usually assumed to be about 90%. The most important mechanisms of CN loss are through HCN losses and oxidation by oxygen in the air, which also assists in the hydrolysis of CN. These mechanisms are supported by the large dam surface area and the long retention time of the tailings water in the dam. By thickening the CIP tailings at the plant and recovering as much tailings water as immediately possible, these losses are avoided. The retention time in an HRT is less than three hours, and the surface area is relatively small. Therefore, CN losses are negligible, which is not necessarily the case in conventionally-sized thickeners. Fig. I shows a block diagram of a 100-t/h gold plant without a thickener. In this example, 50% of the tailings water pumped to the tailings dam is recovered, and the CN concentration of the returned water is 10% of the tailings CN concentration of 150 ppm. Fig. 2 represents a plant with an HRT on tailings, thickening to 55% w/w solids. In this case, the thickened tailings are pumped to the dam, and 25% of the contained water is recovered. The recovered water and the mill make-up water are not sent directly to the mill; instead, they are added to the thickener feed and mixed with it prior to thickening. By doing this, the tailings are effectively washed, and the additional cyanide is recovered. Solution balances over these two circuits show cyanide recoveries of 5% and 65%, respectively. Thus, the thickener use increases cyanide recovery by 60%. Fig. 3 shows a two-stage HRT circuit in a countercurrent decantation (CCD) configuration. In this example, an additional 13% of cyanide is recovered through the use of the second-stage unit. This configuration can be justified when residual cyanide levels are high. To obtain a reliable comparison between conical and cylindrical separatory vessels used in dynamic dense medium separation systems, the following studies were made: (1) study of the swirling flow in conical and cylindrical vessels using laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV); (2) study of the behaviour of suspensions of magnetite and ferrosilicon in water in both separators. It was found that: (a) the tangential velocity profiles differ in conical and cylindrical vessels: in a conical cyclone free vortex conditions affect the largest part of the vessel, while in a cylindrical vessel, the motion approaches that of a forced vortex, i.e. that of a centrifuge; (b) the conical vessel manifests higher centrifugal acceleration and very strong densifying; the density differential, and hence the density gradient inside the vessel is large; (c) the cylindrical vessel manifests lower centrifugal acceleration and low densifying, i.e. low density differentials, and hence, the density gradient inside the vessel is small; (c) due to greater densifying, the density cut-point in cyclones is higher than the operating medium density, while in cylindrical vessels the density cut-point is closer to the medium density. The results provide an interesting description of the differing behaviour of conical and cylindrical vessels and help explain the differences in performance between the two types of separators.

In general, the cyanidation of silver ores requires higher con­centrations of cyanide in comparison to gold ores to affect simi­lar leaching rates and metal recoveries. The requirement for high cyanide concentrations in a silver ore leaching circuit may translate into higher operating costs, however with operation of an acidification-volatilization-reabsorption (AVR) plant to recover and recycle tailings cyanide, cyanide consumptions can be significantly reduced. At each of the currently operating AVR plants in the world, overall cyanide consumptions have been reduced by approximately one-half by recovering and recycling tailings cyanide. In addition, the AVR plants have reduced tail­ings cyanide concentrations to less than 20 to 30 mg/L WAD cyanide and reduced potential adverse impacts to wildlife in the tailings impoundments. This paper presents an analysis of the application of A YR to a silver ore leaching operation which has a CCD/Merrill-Crowe circuit included in the metallurgical plant.
