A new fluid bed lime calcining plant is converting high quality limestone into quicklime at the Cape Lime facility in Vredendal, South Africa. The plant was supplied by Metso Minerals. Cape Lime, established in 1946, operates two limestone and dolomite mines in South Africa. The high quality Vredendal limestone deposits are suitable for the production of lime for water treatment and for manufacturing precipitated calcium carbonate.

"The ways of the world be many and most of the ways be tried, you follow in the footsteps of others till you come to the great divide". These words, written by Robert Service a long time ago, come to mind when I think of our original attitude upon entering into a contract with the International Nickel Company to sink the deepest shaft in the world outside of the Union of South Africa. This shaft was to be sunk to a depth of 7,137 feet from surface, and while it was recognized by all concerned to be a somewhat unusual undertaking in our part of the world, the fact that quite a few shafts had already been sunk to this depth in South Africa probably gave us the feeling that we were following in the footsteps of others. In retrospect, because this shaft was being sunk under entirely different conditions than those existing in South Africa, we were in fact venturing into an entirely new area of endeavour without properly recognizing this fact. It has occurred to me that others considering a similar type of job could benefit from our experience, especially in an assessment of the risks involved and how they compare to those encountered in an ordinary shaft. For comparison purposes, I would define an ordinary shaft as being sunk to a depth of 5,000 ft or less, and a deep shaft as one being sunk to a depth of between 5,000 ft and 8,000 ft. A computer-assisted resources and sedimentological study of the Andersonville, Georgia kaolin-bauxite district was begun in 1975 under a grant from the Office of Mineral Resources of the U.S. Geological Survey (Grant # 14-08-1110-G-173). A preliminary report on the kaolin and bauxite resources of the district has been placed on open file at the U.S.G.S. in Reston, Virginia; the Georgia-Geological Survey in Atlanta, Georgia; and Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia. In addition to a resources estimate, the objectives include the determination of the mineralogical variation, sedimentological parameters, and paleogeographic patterns of the deposition of the high alumina materials and their associated sediments. In the process of compiling data for the resources estimate, isopach maps were developed that provide information as to the shape, size, and distribution of the kaolin deposits and the kaolinitic sediments that contain them. These or similar maps developed for other districts can be useful exploration tools.

The US Bureau of Mines has conducted investigations on extracting phosphate values from wastes generated during the mining and beneficiation of phosphate matrix. These wastes may contain up to one third of the phosphate originally present in untreated ore. Samples of wastes were air-dried and leached using 93% sulfuric acid in the presence of methanol. Evidence for the formation of a calcium sulfate hemihydrate coating that hinders complete dissolution of phosphate is presented. Solid-liquid separations were enhanced when flocculation was effected using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in conjunction with hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) or hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC). A conceptual flowsheet for a proposed process using an acid-alcohol leaching technique is presented.

Heavy media processes have been used for cleaning +28 mesh coals for a number of years, Two applications, i.e., the vessels and the cyclones are widely used in the U. S. for this purpose. The basic reason for the popularity of these systems is their extremely high efficiencies for particle sizes above 28 mesh, However, application of heavy media technology to fine coals below 28 mesh, has been limited due to the following reasons: o Inability to make size separations effectively at sizes below 28 mesh o Necessity of feeding large quantitites of magnetite to the separators o Difficulty of recovering magnetite in the presence of large quantities of coal o High levels of coal contamination in the recovered media, leading to high circulating loads and ineffective control of media gravity

The paper summarizes the current state of development of simulation models for SAG and FAG mills, and gives the results of recent investigations of the physical processes occurring in autogenous grinding. The breakage process is treated as the sum of three regions of breakage actions: normal breakage caused by nipping of particles between media (steel balls or pebbles); abnormal breakage caused when the particle or lump is too big in relation to the media to be readily nipped; self-breakage resulting from the chipping fracture and abrasion of the tumbling action of rock lumps. Each region of breakage action has associated specific rates of breakage and primary progeny fragment distributions.

The advanced cryogenic treatment is a post-manufacturing metallurgical process that involves subjecting off-theshelf materials to extremely low temperatures, significantly improving wear resistance and reliability. These case studies explore whether the claims of Enrich Bits & Tools benefit metals and their specific in-field application to drill bits in the blasting industry. This paper reviews the application of the treatment to button drill bits for enhanced wear resistance in two operations. The first is a civil construction project with highly abrasive rock. To confirm the remarkable benefits of the treatment, a second case study was performed. This case study utilized measure-while-drilling technology in consistent rock characteristics to reduce variables in the field study.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating a novel technique to control methane in underground mines by using methane oxidizing microorganisms termed methanotrophs. Coalbed methane has been responsible for many mine disasters and will continue to be a safety obstacle to mining deeper coal seams. Deeper seams of coal contain more methane gas, and better strategies for removing the methane will need to be developed. Methanotrophic microorganisms offer a novel alternative since they physically remove the methane, are commonly found in soils, and already have been found to exist in many foreign coal mines. Proposed applications of this concept include the inertization of buffer zones separating active mining areas from sealed gobs, reducing ventilation from ventilated gobs and reducing methane content from longwall gobs. Current work includes an assessment of the abundance of naturally occurring methanotrophs in U.S. mines, testing the amount of methane that various types of microorganisms can consume, studying the effects or use of the byproduct gases, and finally developing practical appl ications of this biotechnology to coal mining. This paper reports on the initial laboratory testing that measured the quantity of methane consumed by two types of methanotrophic microorganisms. Average rates of methane consumption were between 1 and 4 ml/hour in column flow tests. A possible gob application may require that 750 cfm of methane be consumed during periods of maximum outgassing. It is premature at this time to accurately scale from laboratory to mine application.

The Los Angeles, California JWPCP effluent outfall tunnel will transport secondary-treated effluent from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson to the White Point Manifold. Upon completion, through ground conditions ranging from soils to hard rock, the tunnel will be approx. 7 miles (11 km) long with a finished internal diameter of 18-ft (5.5 m). This paper will present the Tunneling Condition Assessment Report (TCAR) and Tunnel Operation Plan (TOP) developed prior to construction, as well as the actual TBM performances achieved along the northern portion of the alignment in soft ground, shallow cover, and beneath a densely urbanized area.

The demand for good white minerals for many industries including paint and plastics have made it necessary to import high grade industrial minerals from various parts of the world. Some of the calcium carbonate, barite and talc minerals are from China, Mexico, Jamaica and Haiti. These materials can be processed by custom processors. The custom processor can provide a service to the Industrial Mineral owner. The imported materials can arrive in various feed sizes from lumps (3"-6") down to 325 mesh. The materials can also be in various size shipments or container loads. The economics for importing should be investigated thoroughly. The two factors just mentioned can influence the quantity of material to be processed. These two factors can also influence the total cost for each end product.

"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. About 0.6–0.7 billion metric tons of coal come from longwall top-coal caving panels every year. Titan Group’s environmental policy and Sharrcem’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are the driving forces behind the development and implementation of a comprehensive Rehabilitation Plan at Dimce Quarry, which is the main raw material source for Sharrcem Cement Plant since the 1970’s, located in the municipality of Hani i Elezit in Kosovo. Based on an Environmental Impact Assessment Study and the approved Mining Plan and also on the principles prescribed in the Guidelines on Quarry Rehabilitation, released by the Cement Sustainability Initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD-CSI), Sharrcem has adopted a quarry operation and rehabilitation process in line with the best practices in the mining and cement sector. This paper discusses the background for the development of the rehabilitation plan and the results of rehabilitation activities, as have been implemented over the last few years. The main objective of the progressive rehabilitation plan at Dimce Quarry is to restore the depleted pit and return it back to the original land owners for resettlement. To date approx. 3,4Ha of former mining area has been restored by backfilling and levelling of the depleted closed pit and returned back to owners, who have built their houses and turned it into a living area again. This Quarry has turned out to be a real composition and practical example of preserving and returning back the natural resources in a state compatible with the surrounding environment and with respect to the needs of the local stakeholders. The motivation for business to engage in rehabilitation activities in the first place lies in the belief that the development and implementation of a progressive and practical Quarry rehabilitation plan and restitution of the land will deliver significant environmental and social benefits that outweigh the long-term rehabilitation costs, while maintaining the company’s reputation.

In the Fort Union formation of western North Dakota, eastern Montana and northeastern Wyoming there are immense tonnages of lignite and subbituminous coal that have not yet been evaluated in terms of present economic conditions. Continued expansion of United States energy requirements has focused ever increasing attention on this tremendous resource, particularly as efficiency in mining and transporting of coal, as well as in electrical energy generation and transmission have improved and as hydrogenation and gasification of coal approach economic feasibility. This "total energy" concept for coal includes all of the energy uses that coal offers and has resulted in mergers of oil and coal companies and acquisition of coal re- serves by oil companies, as well as by coal companies and others. There is no doubt that these coals are entering an exciting new era of exploration and development that will result in greatly increased production. As a matter of fact, increased consumption for energy generation is well under way and recognition of the economic feasibility of high-Btu pipeline gas and synthetic petroleum products from coal is imminent. As coal is gradually displaced in steam electric generation by the more exotic fuels and processes, it will be increasingly used as raw material for the synthetic petro-chemical industry and the organic chemical industry.

The University of Alabama Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of carbon-ate gangue from sedimentary apatites "francolite" in the pH range of 4-6 without collector conditioning of the pulp. The process, which does not require an apatite depressant, was modified to beneficiate a high Mgo siliceous phosphate matrix from south Florida. The modified process includes two flotation stages, one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from the siliceous gangue. The selective flotation separation of the carbonate and phosphate, from siliceous constituents of the matrix at various pH levels and collector dosages are discussed. In the carbonate flotation stage, about 70% of the Mgo was rejected in the froth and the phosphate flotation stage produced concentrates analyzing about 31% P2O5,0.7% HgO and 4% insol. The overall P2O5 recovery in the two stages is about 85%.

Originally constructed in the 1930s, the 1-mile-long Sumner Tunnel is 31 feet in diameter and carries traffic deep below Boston Harbor, connecting Boston and East Boston. This project includes both design and construction for the rehabilitation of the nearly 100-year-old tunnel. The primary work includes repairing advanced deterioration at the tunnel crown with new precast arches that will add protection and strengthening. The restoration also consists of upgrading the tunnel systems, including permanently removing 75% of the existing exhaust duct suspended over the roadway to improve the overall ventilation system capacity and performance.

Computer applications in mine 'production' planning and control are concerned with the here and now. In production planning and control we are dealing with tactics as opposed to strategy. Our objective is to make the best of the situation in the short term, i.e., in a relatively fixed environment with relatively fixed plant, equipment, and labor. Environmental factors include not only the geology of the deposit but also market factors (such as price) and governmental constraints and regulations. Mine production planning systems are applied at the interface between concept and execution. Mine production control systems are applied at the interface between execution and revised operating practices or a revised concept. Fig. 1 shows the information flow that takes place regardless of whether the planning and control systems are manual or automatic. The feedback that results depends on the feedback mechanism that has been established, and this feedback can be enhanced by careful systems analysis and design. Chronologically, production planning and control activities support the last in the series of line functions that are ordinarily performed by mining companies. The first of these is exploration, the second is evaluation and development, and the third and final function is production.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an experimental method to evaluate the relative effectiveness of water additives on the extinguishment of coal fires. The experiments were conducted in the fire zone of the multiple entry section of the Bruceton Experimental Mine. Chambers filled with one hundred and eighty kilograms of Pittsburgh seam coal were ignited and allowed to burn until well developed fires were achieved. Extinguishing agent-water solutions were then applied to the fires and the quantity required to extinguish the fires compared to the amount of water alone required to extinguish similar fires. A 20% diammonium phosphate-water solution required an average of 22 L to extinguish the coal fires, while two commercially available additive-water solutions required an average of 30.6 and 30.3 L, respectively. The average amount of water required to extinguish the fires was 28 L. An analysis of covariance, using the thermal energy of the coalbed, Q, to quantify the fire at the time of extinguishment, showed that the diammonium phosphate-water solution was slightly more effective at extinguishing these coal fires than water alone, while the two commercially available additive-water solutions were statistically equivalent to water alone.

The use of activated carbon as an alternative to Merrill Crowe precipitation to recover gold from pregnant leach solutions is recognized. Recovery using activated carbon, however, suffers from the interference, due to organic fouling, clay content and increasingly from the presence of elements such as copper. Ion exchange separation technology is familiar to the mining industry (uranium) and its potential application to the gold mining industry is evaluated with considerable efforts by research workers in South Africa, Australia, and North America. The present paper reviews in detail the status of the research work that identifies potential opportunities.

Mining equipment, like all other equipment, is subject to failure. Since most failures occur at random and are unexpected, corrective maintenance is usually more expensive and causes more down-time than preventive maintenance. In order to reduce the number of failures and thereby increase the availability of an equipment or system, preventive maintenance can be scheduled at predetermined points of time. The preventive maintenance scheduling policies presented in this paper utilize reliability and probability theories. They can be applied to various production bottlenecks where high cost equipment precludes having sufficient quantities of stand-by units.

The Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) is part of the Ottawa River Action Plan and will greatly reduce the frequency of sewage overflows into the Ottawa River during storms. The project consists of the design and construction of two TBM tunnels running EastWest (EWT) and NorthSouth (NST) along 6.2 km in total, and multiple shafts and support buildings. Contractor Dragados Tomlinson JV (DTJV) was awarded the 169 million CAD construction contract in 2016 and the CSST will be in operation in 2020. Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP), supported by Intecsa-Inarsa, was responsible for the detailed design of the precast concrete tunnel lining as well as the geotechnical risk management program. This paper addresses TBM selection, critical tunnel sections, geotechnical risk management and rock mass grouting as a geotechnical risk mitigation measure.
