The main purpose of mine ventilation design is to provide sufficient quantity and quality of air to the workers and to dilute methane and other contaminants. It is generally perceived that the additional air along the longwall face will improve methane dilution on the face and in the tailgate. However, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling efforts at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) under a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) funded research project have found that higher flow velocities along the longwall face are shown to increase the pressure differential between the gob and longwall face allowing more methane to be entrained in the active face and tailgate (TG) area, thereby negating the dilution effect. The increased face ventilation causes an increase in pressure along the headgate side which allows more oxygen to ingress into the gob area, thereby increasing the amount of oxygen available to form explosive methane air mixtures in the gob and to support spontaneous combustion of the coal. Two things are happening at two different locations along the longwall face, increase in pressure as the flow enters the active area cause an increase in pressure which forces more oxygen into the gob, but as the flow is developed along the longwall face, the higher velocities causes greater pressure drop allowing methane to enter the active face further downstream from the headgate (HG) towards the tailgate side. In this paper, a parametric study will be presented to discuss the effect that varying the face air quantity has on methane concentrations in the tailgate and formation of explosive gas zones (EGZs) in the gob. Counter to conventional wisdom, it appears that increased longwall face air quantities may increase the explosion hazard as they result in increased EGZ volumes in the gob, along with increased methane quantities in the tailgate return.

Salicylaldehyde, a chelating agent for tin, has been found to function as a collector for the flotation of cassiterite. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance studies clearly show that salicylaldehyde can form a chelate compound in bulk and at the surface. Results are also given for the flotation of a tin ore with this reagent.

The bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans triggers the surface modification of sulfide minerals to provide hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity for the flotation of sphalerite and galena. The effects of initial cell concentration, period of biotreatment and pulp density on the floatability of the minerals are discussed. With galena, flotation enhancement obtained through sulfuric acid treatment was retarded by biotreatment at all cell concentrations due to chemical effects. Such a decrease occurred for sphalerite only at cell concentrations sufficiently high for bacterial attachment to the mineral surface. The variables affecting surface modification (and, thus, flotation response of the minerals) include the cell concentration used for bacterial conditioning, the period of biotreatment and the pulp density. Although bacterial growth during biotreatment was observed even in the absence of nutrients, such growth was more common in the sphalerite suspension than in the galena suspension. Cell protein estimations suggest that more cells are attached on galena than on sphalerite. Probable reaction mechanisms associated with bacterial modification are discussed.

Air pollution control in primary aluminum smelter . Various processes are known for air pollution in electrolysis plants. Mainly two systems have to be taken into consideration: -Treatment of concentrated gases collected directly from hooded pots. This is normally achieved by either dry or wet process. This is not the object of this paper as these processes have been already described. -Treatment of low concentrated fumes. A certain amount of gaseous and solid fluoride (35 % of total fluor pollution) goes out of the hooded pot. Gases commonly called secondary fumes are generally treated by wet process. The object of 'this paper is to describe two plants with specific treatment for secondary fumes. 1/ A plant in operation in Vlissingen (Netherlands) for PECHINEY. 2/ Presentation of tests carried out by a specialized Company. The results of such tests have been used for the design of the scrubbers presently under construction for ALUMINIO ESPANOL San Ciprian (Spain).

The classical slope analysis and a statistical technique were used in order to determine the iron complexes formed in the organic phase during the extraction of Fe(III) from Fe-Ni-Co sulfate solutions with Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in kerosene. Equilibrium constants for the extraction based on these complexes were also calculated. The complexes determined were of the general form (Fe(OH)3-nRn?sHR)x' where n varied between 1 and 2.5 and s between 0 and 3, and both were found to be decreasing as the iron loading in the organic phase increased. Values of 1,2 and 3 were generally found for x, indicating that the complexes were monomers, dimers and trimers.

The mine characteristic curve represents the relation between the airflow in a system and the pressure drop across the system. In a single fan system, this relation can be easily drawn by assuming different values of the airflow and calculating the corresponding pressure drop according to Atkinson’s law. In a multiple-fan system this cannot be done for each fan simultaneously. However, an alternative mathematical method for plotting subsystem characteristic curves on subsystem quantity coordinates is outlined here that achieves this objective. The Hardy Cross algorithm has been combined with a switching-parameters technique and has been used to trace subsystem characteristic curves. An example using four fans in a complex network is presented here. This example illustrates the nature of the problem and the difficulty of detecting unstable conditions in this type of network.

The method of powering mills such as AG, SAG and Ball has a long and technically interesting history. It can be said that almost every decade in the last half century had its own trend. The trends were dominated by the market demand, the advanced process development and requirement of the mechanical and the electrical technology but mostly by the price of the applied technology. The increasing size of the ring geared mills in the last years requires more awareness on the drive train solution. Special attention must be paid to the mechanics and the requirements of the power grid. Operational challenges such as soft starting and controlled operation as well as the protection of the equipment have gained importance. Frequency converter drive solutions dedicated to single or dual pinion ring-geared mills offer significant advantages over conventional drives due to their application specific features and controls. Solutions with low speed motors as well as high speed motors cover all possible configurations available for ring geared mills.

Universities and colleges in three countries, Australia, Canada and the United States, recognized the need to establish and/or reorganize geoscience programs at the vocational and two-year technical levels. To accomplish this goal, a cooperative study with industry in one state or province from each country was initiated. These include 1) Tasmania, Australia, 2) British Columbia, Canada and 3) Alaska, United States. Over one hundred mineral industry organizations cooperated in the study by providing information regarding their specific training needs for support personnel. The data gathered has been used to identify training areas for semi-skilled, skilled and technical personnel in geochemical mineral exploration, including, but not limited to, geological skills, geochemical skills, environmental skills and computer skills. With the areas of major educational need defined for geochemical exploration, an educational field skills model has been developed for the three levels of training. The depth of each level of education and the training objectives for the work force at each level will be discussed.

Indonesia is a developing country in Southeast Asia with a population of some 180 million people. It has a stable political environment and currently enjoys high rates of economic growth. Indonesia has abundant reserves of natural resources, ample for its own needs and for export. Energy resources include oil, gas and coal. The oil and gas industries are well established domestically and for export. In the last few years, though, coal industry development has been rapid. Coal resources from bituminous to lignite amount to more than 30 Gt (33 billion st). That is more than enough to meet domestic needs and provide significant amounts for export. Figure 1 shows coal basins in Indonesia. Coals in Indonesia are generally young steaming coals. They are very low ash and sulfur, high volatile, bituminous B and C. The Indonesian government's state coal company is called Perum Tambang Batubara. The company has actively promoted the development of its coal for domestic and export markets. In particular, the government has placed priority on non-oil exports of which coal is a major element. The government strives to honor all contractural commitments for the export of Indonesian coal from contractor, private and government mines. From 1987 through 1989, coal production has increased from about 3 Mt (3.3 million st) to 9 Mt (9.9 million st). Exports have grown from I Mt (1.1 million st) to 3 Mt (3.3 million st). These are significant increases for a small industry with limited infrastructure. But with growing investment and development, these production and export levels will increase substantially, and Indonesia will be a significant world supplier of coal in the 1990s.

"While there has been continual improvement in the models for predicting deposition velocity and pipeline friction losses, the fundamental design philosophy for tailings pipelines has remained the same over the previous three or four decades: design the tailings pipeline to operate in turbulent flow without a deposit on the pipe invert for all expected process conditions. Recent improvements in the understanding of slurry pipeline flows allows for the design of pipelines operating with a deposit on the pipe invert, allowing the system to operate at moderate velocities for high flow rates, optimizing system energy requirements and maximizing pipeline wear life.Tailings pipelines are increasingly operated at higher solids concentrations when there is a greater likelihood the pipeline will operate in laminar flow due to the higher tailings slurry rheology. Historically, slurry pipelines have been operated in turbulent flow. We now know that laminar-flow pipeline operation is possible as there are several operational laminar-flow tailings pipelines. While our understanding of laminar-flow slurry pipelines is not complete, recent research provides guidance on how to approach the design of these pipelines.New sensor technology has led to the development of an instrument that provides reliable indication of bed-deposit height within a pipeline. This technology is particularly helpful in operating pipelines with a deposit and has application in better understanding the operation of laminar-flow pipelines. Failure of tailings pipelines can result in consequent damage to surrounding structures and unacceptable spillage into the environment. Modern pipeline leak detection technology allows operators to better manage this risk by ensuring safe and reliable operation of tailings pipelines.This article provides an overview of the each of the above advances in the design and operation of tailings pipelines.Operating tailings pipelines with a depositTailings pipelines, and slurry pipelines in general, are typically designed to operate without a deposit on the pipeline invert. Meaning, the minimum operating velocity exceeds the turbulent deposition velocity. This approach has been adopted due to concerns regarding potential blockage of a pipeline operating with a deposit."

Fall of ground is a leading source of worker injury and fatality indicating a persistent need for ground monitoring technology. The HRTMM is an experimental convergence monitor utilizing a digital camera and custom software to track the position of one or more lasers across the target. Apparent laser movement is proportional to target convergence. The HRTMM was installed in an underground mine near active operations to test its response to the mining environment. This included intense blasting vibration and mine fog. Results and potential of the new monitoring technology will be discussed.

A pilot plant was constructed to attrition scrub and deslime North Carolina phosphate ore. A 15.2 cm (6 in.) diameter pilot-scale Linatex Hydrosizer was used for desliming. Four tests were run at a throughput of 2.9 t/hr/m2 (0.30 ton/hr/f t2) and a teeter bed density of 1.12-1.13 g/cm3. The teeter water flow rate was varied to create an upflow velocity ranging from 0.25-0.47 cm/s. (This latter value is equal to the terminal settling velocity of a 200 mesh (74 micron) particle having a density of 2.7 g/cm3.) The recovery of +200 mesh oversize to the sizer underflow was 95%-96%, regardless of the teeter flow rate. The recovery of -200 mesh undersize to the sizer overflow increased from about 90% at 0.25 cm/sec to 100% at 0.47 cm/sec. A metallurgical balance that was conducted for one of the tests showed that less than 2% of the phosphatic value was lost to the overflow. A fifth test was run using an upflow velocity of 0.47 cm/sec; however, the teeter bed density was maintained at 1.05 cm/sec. This change had the effect of reducing the cut point (d50), while maintaining complete slime removal.

The solvent extraction of gold cyanide from alkaline cyanide solutions with monosubstituted guanidines, bis disubstituted guanidines and a tetrasubstituted guanidine was investigated. The guanidine functional group is protonated in alkaline solution and the guanidinium cation is stabilized so that the aurocyanide anion can be extracted even at -pH 12 if an appropriate carrier is used. Typical aprotic carriers including both aliphatic and aromatic solvents limit gold extraction by guanidines to pH 10; whereas the presence of an alcohol extends gold extraction to pH 12. UV spectroscopy suggests that the alcohol facilitates protonation of the guanidines, stabilizes the guanidinium cation, and facilitates gold extraction at high pH.

Introduction From 1973 through 1986, a total of 12 fires involving oil-flooded rotary screw compressors (OFRSC) were reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Most of these incidents were attributed to faulty or by-passed safeguards, or improper maintenance. The cause of a fire in an OFRSC is unique when compared to other types of compressors. A compressor inspection checklist is provided here that can be referenced when conducting regularly scheduled maintenance operations. This checklist and a well-planned program of periodic training and maintenance should help minimize the probability of fires and explosions in OFRSC's. Operation A rotary screw compressor operates on the principle of positive displacement of air. Compressed air in this type of compressor is produced by the meshing of two helical rotors, or screws, as they rotate within a steel housing called a stator. The male rotor normally has four lobes and is driven either directly or indirectly - through a gear assembly - by a motor. It intermeshes with a female rotor having six cavities. Figure 1 explains the compression mechanism: (1) Atmospheric air is drawn into the stator by the suction action of the two rapidly rotating rotors. (2) As the rotors rotate past the intake port, air is trapped in the stator and in the cavities between the rotors. (3) Further movement of the rotors causes an increased reduction in volume, compressing the entrapped air. (4) Compressed air is expelled at the discharge port in the bottom of the stator at a pressure and quantity determined by the particular compressor rotor design parameters, such as length, diameter, and speed. Radial bearings on the male and female rotors compensate for radial loading on the shaft and position the rotors within the stator. Thrust bearings on the discharge end of the compressor prevent rotor misalignment due to thrust developed during the compression cycle. This design prevents the male and female rotors from making contact with each other or the stator. A clearance of 0.07 to 0.1 mm (0.003 to 0.005 in.) exists between the two rotors and the stator. For this reason, there is virtually no wear on the rotors or stator, and the unit is relatively maintenance-free. Oil is injected into the compressor and serves to cool, seal, and lubricate. When air is compressed from atmospheric pressure to some higher discharge pressure, a specific amount of heat is produced. This heat is sometimes referred to as the adiabatic heat of compression. This study seeks to define the mechanism of oxyanion sorption onto surfactant-modified zeolites. Zeolites which have been treated with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA) surfactant to produce a hydrophobic surface are capable of sorbing both organic compounds as well as oxyanions such as chromate, selenate, and sulfate. Simple ion exchange and charge-balancing mechanisms do not fully explain this unusual phenomenon. The sorption of HDTMA surfactant appears to be partly ion exchange and partly sorption to non-ion-exchangeable sites. Sorption of chromate is a simple exchange mechanism with bromide, which co-adsorbs with HDTMA to form a surface precipitate. Information from this study will be used to design on-site and in situ treatment systems for contaminated water, such as filter beds and permeable barriers.

This paper presents a case study which applies risk assessment techniques in evaluating potential environmental problems associated with past waste disposal practices at a 65 acre non-ferrous metals and metal alloys manufacturing facility. Waste management activities at the site involved a number of surface impoundments for gangue material, neutralized acid rinse waters, acid rinse sludges, demolition debris, storm water runoff, stockpiled ores, and a permitted residual waste landfill. As a result of these activities, the She contained 9 identifiable waste management areas impacted by over 35 potentially hazardous chemicals and metals. Extensive environmental data obtained from investigations at the Site revealed heavy metal and volatile organic chemical contamination in various environmental media. These data were utilized to evaluate potential risks to human health and the environment. The human health risk assessment estimated potential health risks to workers, residents, and Site trespassers under current and expected future uses of the Site. Areas of the Site were identified which were considered to present potential health concerns under the various exposure scenarios. Results from the human health risk assessment were utilized to develop cost effective risk based soil remediation goals protective of the public health and environment.

"While genetic algorithms have been widely adopted in ore grade estimation and optimization, mine design, and production scheduling in the mining engineering field, reliability and maintainability analysis of mining equipment using genetic algorithms has been a relatively new research area in recent years. This paper presents an application of genetic algorithms using case studies with seven underground scoop trams whose maintenance records have been collected over a period of 12 months from an underground mine in the Sudbury mining area. Based on the assumption that various factors that contribute to machine failures resemble the biological evolution process, the authors have developed an in-house PC software application called GenRel which adopts genetic algorithms in its programming. In this study, the authors feed the historical maintenance data into GenRel in order to predict future maintenance characteristics of mining equipment in a time period of three months. Then the predicted maintenance characteristics are compared to the actual maintenance records in the same time period. A statistical study is then used to examine the similarity between the predicted data and the recorded data.INTRODUCTION Today maintenance costs of sophisticated engineering systems are so high that maintainability draws great attention from scientific researchers to operations managers. For instance, a study by [1] shows that American manufacturers spend more than 300 billion U.S. dollars on plant maintenance and operations. Therefore it is understandable that the main objectives of applying maintainability principles to engineering systems are to reduce projected maintenance costs, to use maintainability data to estimate system or equipment availability/unavailability and to determine labor-hours and other related resources needed to perform the projected maintenance. A system with better maintainability would inherently provide the benefit of lower maintenance costs, less time to recover with lower breakdown frequency (design for simplicity), less complexity of maintenance tasks and relatively reduced man-hours [2]. Most maintainability functions use the Time To Repair (TTR) as the independent variable. It is common to use probabilistic or statistical concepts to define a maintainability function, for example, the probability density function. Let t denote the time. Assuming a repair starts at t=0 and completes at time T, the maintainability can be mathematically defined [3] as in Equation (1)."

INTRODUCTION In the fall of 1983, the fourth new Rapid Transit System constructed in this country in the last forty years will go into revenue service. The Baltimore Metro will bring to this major Mid-Atlantic seaport the first phase of a planned intermodal transit system, serving a metropolitan area with a population in excess of four million people. Originally, the Mass Transit Administration (MTA) considered construction of a twenty-eight mile system known as Phase 1. Its two lines would run from the center of Baltimore City, one going northwest to Owings Mills and the other south to Anne Arundel County. Legislative approval was granted in April, 1976; however, funding was limited to constructing a segment fewer than eight miles in length, along the northwest corridor from Charles Center to the Baltimore City county line. This segment is known as Section A. The project is 80% federally funded and 20% state funded, with a capital cost estimate of $797,000,000 to complete. This report addresses the development and implementation of a Coordinated Insurance Program for the construction phase of Section A, and includes a description of the associated risk management process. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF SECTION A Section A of the Baltimore Metro is composed of a rapid transit line eight miles in length which serves the northwest corridor between Charles Center in downtown Baltimore and Reisterstown Plaza at the Baltimore City county boundary.
