Introduction Opencast surface mining requires blasthole drilling to achieve mine planning. No single method of mining is right for all conditions. Occasionally, mine planners introduce a project with little regard to drilling and blasting. These costs are usually a significant percentage of total mine overhead. One drilling and blasting method that can be used to reduce overall mine expense is inclined or angle hole drilling. But inclined-hole drilling will not cut costs unless a set of required circumstances is met. Several conditions of mine design indicate the use of angle drilling. Geotechnical problems must first be analyzed. Primary considerations are safety, fragmentation, production, and maintenance. Secondary considerations are, in some instances, reduction in amount of explosives, which lowers blasting costs; reduction of practical fragmentation beyond blasting pattern limits; and reductions in overall costs due to reduced volume of excavation. Future trends in blasthole drilling may include incorporation of drill equipment designed to allow rapid change from vertical to inclined drilling. This will allow the operator to adapt to changing hole requirements with minimal production loss. Another improvement may be the ability to chamber holes at any elevation throughout the hole depth. This will allow more charge to be placed at strategic locations to improve fragmentation. Merits of Drilling Inclined Holes Drilling is performed to create voids for explosives. It is done either to recover minerals or to excavate a volume of earth. The manner of mining or excavation can greatly affect the economics of the overall project. Many innovations and methods have been tried, but the most practical and economical is still drilling holes and using explosives to fragment the material. To break up the material, the practice has been to place charges within the mass. This is done by drilling holes of a specific diameter and depth into the material. The holes are of such magnitude as to develop sufficient energy to break or loosen this material, providing for easier removal. In general, more open or exposed faces must exist to aid material breakage when blasting. Inclined drilling can be advantageous in open-cut mining with highwall depths of at least 24 m (80 ft). A minimum of two faces are open in open-cut mining and the material can be thrown outward to cover pre-mined volume. This cuts cost by eliminating the need to remove or relocate a large portion of material. Sometimes the material is of such a mass that more energy per unit is required to loosen it than can easily be done by blasting vertically. Inclined holes allow a more uniform loading of drilled holes. The unit of energy is raised, so little or no secondary blasting is required. This usually comes about only if the main plan calls for drilling holes deeper than 24 m (80 ft). For shallow holes, spacing and burden can be made closer to allow sufficient energy to blast the toe. Two different groups of mechanisms have been considered in the past to explain the effects of chemical additives on grinding. While one group of explanations is based upon alterations of surface and mechanical properties of the individual particles, the other group depends mainly on the arrangement of particles and their flow in suspensions. In this paper some of the past work on grinding aids is reviewed and attrition grinding of a commercially important ceramic material, zirconia (stabilized with yttria) with polyaaylic acid as grinding aid, is studied in order to determine the effect of the aid on the ground product itself. It was observed that even though polyaaylic acid did cause a drastic decrease in the viscosity of the pulp, it did not have any major effect on the grinding of zirconia at least up to 2000 ppm and only minor detrimental effect above it. Importantly, complexation by the polymer was found to cause extraction of yttrium into solution with possibly significant changes in the surface chemical composition of the product.

Technological advances in mine equipment and milling processes have enabled mining companies to exploit ever lower grades of ore. The result has been larger disturbances, greater volumes of waste, a complex web of infrastructure, and an overall trend towards mega-projects that can extend over several square kilometers. This explosive growth in a mining operation’s disturbance footprint provokes an obvious question: What’s it going to cost to reclaim all of this? At face value, this can be an enormous financial liability for a company, but since the timing of reclamation may be years in the future for many operations, these costs can be heavily discounted thereby limiting the burden on the corporate balance sheet. Nonetheless, mining companies are eager to remove these liabilities as quickly as possible, conversely, regulators want assurance reclamation will, in fact, occur. How might one bridge these competing interests? Navigating the practical and financial requirements of a post-closure landscape requires foresight, judgement and assumptions, however, companies who do not adequately plan for these future expenditures when there is no off-setting income stream will likely face some difficult decisions. Simple risk analysis tools and utilizing the time value of money can help bring some clarity to this end-of-mine life phase.

Traditional pit optimization techniques cannot take account of the requirement to blend ore in order to produce a saleable product, as is the case for iron ore, coal, limestone and other industrial minerals. Various techniques are proposed to overcome the deficiencies, many of which have been tested. The techniques in general involve the combined application of pit optimization and blend optimization techniques.

It is important to study the methane transport phenomenon in a longwall panel under descentional ventilation conditions. The gob area is divided into a number of rectangular percolating elements, each of which is connected with its neighbors by leakage passages, so that a network can be formed. Using the mechanics of porous media fluid flow, the mathematical model of air and gas flows can be established. Based on the existing ground pressure theories, the inhomogeneous porosity of the porous media in the gob can be given. Through computer simulation it is found that air pressure and temperature are functions of position. Air density, viscosity, and natural ventilation pressure are functions of temperature, pressure and methane concentration. It is also found that the resistance varies with air density and viscosity. Finally, the calculation results are given to show the differences between ascentional and descentional ventilation methods.

1- Importance of Shafts for the Exploration and Extraction of Coal Deposits Coal mining in the Federal Republic of Germany is carried out in a depth between 800 and 1200 m below sea level (Fig. 1). The shortest connections underground in a mine and up to the surface are vertical shafts. Such shafts assume, with ventilation, manriding and the winding of material, the most important functions for the maintenance of mining operations. In the German coal mining industry, a difference is made between the main shafts providing a direct access from the surface to the deposits, and the so-called "blindshafts" which serve as a connection between two or several haulage levels underground. The Crago “Double Float” process is widely used in upgrading phosphate ore. This process is inefficient, as it floats about 30-40% of the sands in the flotation feed twice and requires a deoiling step. This paper summarizes several research projects on improving phosphate flotation. The University of Utah investigated a new flotation chemistry for efficient flotation of phosphate in a single step. The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research developed several single-collector, all-anionic flotation flowsheets using various sizing schemes. In addition, Eriez invented the HydroFloat separator, which demonstrated great potential for processing coarse flotation feed in one step.

CalMat Co. is one of the largest producers of construction aggregates in the United States. The CalMat Reliance plant is located in Irwindale, California, and is situated on an alluvial fan formed by the San Gabriel River. The fan deposits are of Quaternary age and were derived from granitic and metamorphic bedrock exposed in the San Gabriel Mountains to the north. The sediments are poorly sorted and range in size from large boulders to clay size particles. The coarse material is hard and durable and consists of quartz diorite, granodiorite, granitic gneiss, schist and minor amounts of volcanic rock. The matrix is comprised of silty sand with varying amounts of clay. Thin silt and clay lenses occur sporadically throughout the deposit. The clay content of the matrix and the degree of weathering of the coarse material increases with depth. Based on seismic data, the alluvial fan varies from 200 to 400 feet thick and overlies crystalline bedrock. The Reliance plant was constructed in 1971 and 1972. It has a nominal capacity of 1200 to 1400 tons per hour, and typically produces more than three million tons of aggregate products per year. Alluvial fan sediments are mined from a gravel pit situated adjacent to the plant. The material is fed through a mobile, 48- by 60-inch, in-pit jaw crusher, then transported by conveyor to the main plant to be processed. The plant is modern and highly efficient. It has a typical wet and dry circuit and is capable of producing a wide range of aggregate products. To extend the life of the plant, a 9,000 foot conveyor system is being constructed to connect it to a granite quarry operated by Azusa Rock Inc. The quarry is located north of Irwindale, and is 50 percent owned by CalMat Co. The conveyor will be used to export crushed rock from the quarry to Reliance. The existing plant will be modified to process the crushed rock.

The tremendous growth in grinding mill size and horsepower during the 70s demanded advancements in gear cutting technology and equipment for the 80s. A new standard in gear cutting machines is now used to generate-cut large open gear sets to over 12.2 m (40 ft) in diameter at an AGMA quality level much higher than the accepted levels a short five years ago. The precision of the resulting gear set assures maximum tooth contact with the resultant longer gear set life.

A finite element model (FEM) was established to study the influence of various factors on the capture of rare earth minerals under a high-gradient superconducting magnetic field. The study aims to improve the efficiency of rare earth mineral separation and recovery.

The current underground infrastructure of an old monumental salt mine along with using it as a tourist, museum, nature, resort, conference and cultural events place is presented in the paper. At present, mainly in the monumental part of mine, only a small part of the historical chambers, which together with galleries form a tourist route available to visitors. Moreover, the essential activities aimed to make the tourist route more attractive and to change the decor of the underground sites are discussed.

The objective of this paper is to present preliminary capital and operating cost estimates (±25%) comparing conventional carbon-in-solution (CIS) with resin-in­solution (RIS) using AuRIX® 100 for the recovery of gold and silver from typical heap leach solutions. Preliminary testwork was carried out with AuRIX® 100 using real and synthetic leach solutions to determine the technical viability of the resin for gold/silver recovery and to provide process design parameters for the preliminary RIS circuit. The scope of the resin testwork was sufficient to support the level of accuracy applied in the capital and operating cost estimates. No parallel testwork was carried out with activated carbon. Industry standard design data and operating data from existing CIS operations were used as a basis for the comparison. Both the capital and operating cost comparisons indicate a substantial savings for a RIS circuit using AuRIX® 100 (- 14 to 18% in terms of capital and 25 to 35% in terms of operating costs) over a conventional CIS circuit depending upon solution flows and grade.

The mechanism and kinetics of pretreatment on pyritic gold concentrate with the catalytic oxidation acid leach (COAL) process were studied in the temperature range of 80-100°C and oxygen pressure range of 230-1013 kPa, with sodium lignosulfonate (SL) and mixed medium of sulfuric acid (11 g/[ ]) and nitric acid (5.5 g/ [ ]). The results show that nitric acid acts as a catalyst, the surfactant changes the hydro-phobicity of resulting elemental sulfur to favor the oxidation of pyrite, and the oxidation-determining step would be the chemical reaction between nitric acid and pyrite. When about 80% of pyrite contained in the concentrate is oxidized, the gold cyanidation extraction exceeds 95 % . The nitric acid in solution can be recycled and used again.

Serrana's deposit contains three types of ore: oxidized, micaceous and silicate-carbonate. The results presented refer to characterization and fundamental studies performed on fractions resulting from the purification of five samples from the silicate-carbonate type collected in the mine. Each type was purified and submitted to mineralogical characterization, zeta potential determinations, and microflotation experiments. The samples, with exception of the barite, are mineralogically complex and the selectivity between apatite and gangue minerals is poor. Under the current state of art, it is impossible to feed the plant with the silicate-carbonate ore, unless it is blended with the standard oxidized ore.

Rogers Group, Inc., is the nation's largest privately held aggregates producer (primarily producing crushed limestone and secondarily sand & gravel) and a major regional asphalt paving construction contractor. The company also has interests in building supplies and coal. Facilities are concentrated in five states in the central U.S. (Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama), with an additional location in Southwestern Virginia. At the request of its then CEO and with support from the company's ownership, Rogers embarked on a strategic planning program in late 1986 by retaining an outside management consulting firm. The ultimate goal of this program was to develop a self-sustaining strategic planning process to inject a strategic dimension into every manager's business thinking and to improve company performance. Since then, Rogers has internalized the outside consultants' strategic planning framework --initially, using it wholesale, and later, greatly streamlining and tailoring both the planning process and product to meet the specific needs of the company. Implementation of strategies developed from strategic planning has resulted in significant improvements throughout the organization. The latest product of the strategic planning effort is a company-wide (or, "corporate") strategic plan that carries the theme of "Market Leadership through Excellence". This paper provides a case study of successful corporate strategic planning by examining the evolution of strategic planning at Rogers and by summarizing the key elements of a sound planning process and product.

Introduction Fire assaying is an ancient method of determining the amount of gold and silver in geological materials. Today's commercial, mining, school, and private fire assaying laboratories still use this basic assaying method. One of the primary reagents used to collect gold and silver from the ore is litharge (PbO), or lead oxide. The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) and the Nevada Division of Occupational Safety and Health's (OSH) have a lead standard. It states that a person exposed to airborne lead at concentrations greater than 50 µg/m3 (1.4 µg per cu ft) of air over an eight-hour period has gone beyond the permissible limit for health safety. It is not uncommon to get airborne lead concentrations of 1400 µg/m3 (40 µg per cu ft) in the flux/sampling area or 900 µg/m3 (25 µg per cu ft) around the gas/ electric furnaces during the fusion and cupelling phases. Therefore, any individual working in these areas for more than 30 days per year without proper protection is a likely candidate for lead poisoning. Lead In A Human Lead enters the body as a toxic substance by breathing it into the lungs and upper respiratory tract and by getting lead particles into the digestive system through ingestion. Smoking, eating, drinking, chewing tobacco and gum, or wiping a lead-contaminated hand across the mouth are all potential ways forgetting lead into the body. Lead taken in large quantities can actually kill a person in a matter of days. This is rare, however. The real hazard of lead overexposure is for the unsuspecting person who works in an unsafe lead environment for months or years. This individual can slowly receive damage, sometimes permanent, to the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, blood, gums, and reproductive system. Safe Blood-Lead Level The Lead Standard states that the maximum safe blood-lead level is 40 µg/100 g (40 µg per 3.5 oz) of whole blood. It recommends 30 µg/100 g (30 µg per 3.5 oz) if a person is of child-bearing age. People not working around lead products normally have a blood level of less than 10 µg/100 g (10 µg per 3.5 oz). A person not adequately protected can exceed 40 µg/100 g (40 µg per 3.5 oz) in a few weeks by fire assaying only 100 samples per day per week. Studies show that some individuals have developed lead-related diseases with blood-lead levels less than 80 µg/m3 (2.3 µg per cu ft). Lead Poisoning Symptoms There is a long list of symptoms associated with lead poisoning. The most common are: a prolonged, sweet, metallic taste in the mouth; loss of appetite; anxiety and irritability; weakness and dizziness; nausea and tremors; and insomnia. Preventive Measures Based on the lead standard, a number of preventive measures can be taken to ensure that fire assay laboratory personnel frequently exposed to lead are protected against overexposure. First, the actual lead concentration within the assaying area should be determined. In Nevada, one can contact the Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health for assistance in monitoring any laboratory. The agency will also recommend ways to protect against lead. This agency does the monitoring and provides an educational class on lead safety. This type of agency can be found in other states. Commercial consulting firms are also available, but they are expensive. Regardless of the technique used to determine lead concentrations, it is most likely that the average fire assay area exceeds the 50 µg/m3 (1.4 µg per cu ft) lead concentration limit. This is considered unsafe.

Many organisations, including those in the resources industry have Board-level endorsed principles on sustainability. A key challenge, however, is how to systematically integrate these high-level principles into the design and operation of mineral processing plants. In an effort to meet this challenge the Sustainable Operations framework, called SUSOP®, was conceived and developed through the Corporative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) in Australia. Somewhat analogous to HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Studies) which is well entrenched in the resources industry, the key aim of SUSOP® is to produce a holistic, systematic and rigorous methodology for identifying and assessing sustainability opportunities and risks. This paper argues the need for such a sustainability framework, presents the key elements of SUSOP®, highlights how case studies enhanced its development and articulates the reasons why such a framework will have growing importance into the future.

Most prediction methods used to calculate mining-induced subsidence rely on empirical formulations, which typically assume flat topography and uniform properties in the overburden. It is also well known that when a longwall panel mines below a valley bottom surface ground deformation magnitudes and orientations may be significantly influenced by the presence of the valley. This paper discusses ground deformation data collected at different surface locations above the Buchanan mine in the eastern United States. Measurements at individual surface points and strata movement measurements using a three-point extensometer have been collected as the area was undermined. Measurements correspond to the mining of the panel immediately under the measurement points and to the mining of adjacent panels. Measurement locations correspond to valley bottom locations. The measurements are critically evaluated and compared with respect to topography and panel face location. The issue of the fluctuation of GPS measurements is also discussed.

The subsidence and deformation characteristics of strata with thick unconsolidated overlying strata is quite different from that with consolidated overlying strata. In this paper, based on the engineering background of large mining height mining in No.21 coal seam of Zhaogu No.2 Coal Mine in Henan Province, China, the PFC 2D numerical simulation and surface subsidence field observation was conducted to study the subsidence characteristics of strata with thick unconsolidated overlying strata (680m). Numerical model with dimensions of 2000m 750m was established and mining process with different working face lengths (150 m,200 m,250 m,300 m) and different working face advancing distances (40 m,80 m,120 m,160 m,200 m,240 m,280 m,320 m,360 m,400 m,440 m,480 m) were simulated. The surface subsidence characteristics and displacement field variation of rock strata under different working face advancing distances were observed and analyzed. The results show that with the advance of working face, the structure of subsidence-like basin will be formed in each rock stratum, and the influence range of mining on rock stratum is “bowl-shaped”, and the influence increases with the increase of advancing distance. The unconsolidated layer has a buffer effect on the mining-induced subsidence, and the buffer effect is realized by the expansion of the subsidence area. The movement law of strata under different working face lengths is similar to that under general mining, and the structure of subsidence-like basins will also be formed in each stratum. The influence range of strata after mining is ' bowl-shaped ', and the influence extent increases with the increasing of working face length; the internal subsidence of the unconsolidated layer is more intense and complex than that of the rock layer; the surface subsidence movement shows an obvious 'basin' phenomenon. The field observation data of surface subsidence also confirm the above results.

The Two Rivers Water Reclamation Authority (TRWRA) in Monmouth County, New Jersey, is replacing its aging Pleasure Bay Interceptor (PBI) with a new 54-in interceptor in a 3,250-foot long 8 to 10-foot diameter tunnel and a new 50-mgd main pump station (MPS). A comprehensive phased geotechnical investigation was performed, including SPTs, CPTs and geophysics. A channel filled with soft marine sediments was identified. The tunnel is set in stiff to hard marine soil to enable using a less expensive open-face TBM. The thickness of tunnel cover under the channel is optimized through numerical analyses to avoid a deeper pump station yet maintaining tunnel stability with controlling seepage.
