INTRODUCTION The selective sensitivity of plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTD's) to low energy 4He particles in an environment which also contains gamma and beta radiations has made these detectors prime candidates for the dosimetric measurement of the concentrations of radon and its daughter products in mine air. Their passive, integrating mode of measurement, small size, low weight and inexpensiveness are attractive characteristics for large scale personnel dosimetry. The detectors can be used in either active or passive dosimeters. In active devices, the PNTD is placed in close proximity to a sampling filter. The filter collects, from a calibrated air flow, all the daughter nuclei which are in suspension. As the daughter nuclei pass through the decay chain, through 214Po, a fraction of the 4He particles emitted are registered as latent tracks in the plastic. In passive devices, the PNTD is placed in direct contact with the ambient air containing the radio-nuclei concentrations to be determined. The active dosimeters have the advantage of excellent sensitivity, and the measured track densities yield very close approximations to accumulated Working Level (WL)** exposures. They have the disadvantage that the simplicity of the passive PNTD is lost, since a battery-driven constant flow-rate air pump is a necessity. The passive dosimeters are simple in construction and use, but they have the disadvantage that WL exposures are not directly measured and certain assumptions concerning radon and daughter equilibrium conditions must be made in determining WL exposures from the measured track densities. Also the sensitivities, in track densities per Working Level Hour (WLH) exposure, are much less than for active dosimeters. Dosimeters of both types have been investigated. Passive devices have been tested extensively both in the laboratory and in mines. Active devices have been laboratory tested. In our earlier measurements, cellulose nitrate plastic detectors were used exclusively, since this material had the highest sensitivity of the PNTD's then in use. When the properties of CR-39 plastic were discovered (Cartwright, 1978; Cassou and Benton, 1978), this material was used, where possible, to take advantage of its superior sensitivity. The results of our earlier work have previously been published (Frank and Benton, 1977). * Research sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of Interior, under Contract No. JO-188003. ** A Working Level is defined as any combination of the short-lived radon daughters containing 1.3 x 105 MeV of potential 4He-particle energy per liter of ambient air. PASSIVE DOSIMETRY In the earliest testing of PNTD's for passive WL dosimetry, a single strip of cellulose nitrate plastic was used to determine the total cumulative 4He-particle activity in the air of simulated uranium mine and uranium mine environments (Rock, 1968; Rock [et al], 1969; White, 1969). The measurements yielded a close relationship between track densities and WL exposures in a controlled, static environment, but poor accuracy in the active mine tests. It was assumed that equilibrium differences contributed largely to the variations found. The response of PNTD's to airborne 4He-particle emitters, derived by Lovett (1969), demonstrated that detectors such as cellulose nitrate, which has a sensitivity cutoff at 4He-particle energies below the emission energies of radon and its daughters, are equally sensitive to the activity concentrations of radon, 218po(RaA) and 214Po(RaC'). Since radon does not contribute to WL as it is defined, and since, under normal ventilated uranium mine conditions, the radon activity constitutes about 40% to 70% of the total 4He-particle activity, the WL exposures calculated from measured track densities are very sensitive to the particular radon daughter equilibrium conditions. Also, the detector does not weight the individual daughter activities in proportion to their importance to WL. The equation for WL is WL = 0.00103C2 + 0.00507C3 + 0.00373C4 (1) where C2, C3 and C4 are the activity concentrations of RaA, RaB and RaC-C', respectively, in pCi/[L]. The detector leaves C3 unmeasured and weights C2 and C4, equally. [This problem has been approached by Domanski et al (1975, 1979), for some non-uranium mines, by measuring equilibrium conditions throughout the mines to determine a mean value for A, the inverse of the Working Level Ratio (WLR = 100 WL where C1 is the activity of radon-222 in pCi/[L].) The distribution of values allowed Domanski to determine probable errors in calculating WL exposures from track densities. However, measurements of equilibrium conditions in U.S. uranium mines (Breslin et al, 1969; Holub and Droullard, 1978) indicate that this method would not be accurate enough for uranium miner personal dosimetry.] A two-element dosimeter was designed at our laboratory to compensate for equilibrium variations. The first element is a radon detector; the second is a detector for the total 4He-particle activity in the ambient air, just as in the single element dosimeters cited above. The addition of the radon detector allows the equilibrium conditions for the individual nuclei to be determined, given certain assumptions concerning the interrelationships between the nuclei concentrations in mine air. The two detectors and the problems involved in calculating WL exposures from their measurements are discussed below.

If we took much risk, we died (Fig. 1). As individuals and tribes, risk had to be optimized to maximize our chances to thrive, as individuals and as tribes.In today’s world, the risks are vastly different, but in order to thrive, these must be managed. And no industry knows this as much as mining. In fact, the International Council of Mining & Metals (ICMM) has proposed the Critical Risk Model (Fig. 2) as a means of identifying critical risk, critical controls and associated performance standards. The ICMM focuses on sustainable development performance in the mining and metals industry. It has 23 members, representing some of the largest mining companies in the world.This approach is going to help the mining industry. But it must be applied effectively, with the acknowledgment that the system alone cannot be effective. We can say this confidently, as even companies known for the strength of their risk and safety management systems continue to experience significant incidents, and, in some cases, catastrophes. Why does that happen when all safety metrics, including injury rate, are pointing in the right direction? In the view of the author, it is only when leadership, culture and systems work in complete harmony that the resilience of an organization to manage its significant risk is at an optimal level. It remains an ongoing leadership challenge to maintain that balance and the optimal mindset in the organization. So how do you maintain that special balance?Let’s start with a basic premise. Leadership, supported by simple effective systems, creates culture which creates outcomes. Everyone going home safely is an outcome, as is cost effective operations, and to achieve those outcomes efficiently, the organization must focus on the inputs. And those inputs include effective leadership, effective systems (for the purposes of this article, risk and health, safety and environment (HSE) systems), good planning, stable operations and competent workers. This article will focus on gaining maximum performance from your risk management system."

Operational and economic factors tend to favor the application of continuous processes in preference to batch processes in the majority of mineral processing applications. In this paper, the requirement for a continuous elution process is established and the development of a large-scale pilot plant is described. It is based on a continuous elution apparatus that has a number of special features. These are the subject of various patent applications. The apparatus is suitable for adaptation to the AARL, Zadra, and other methods of elution. The performance of the atmospheric continuous elution system (ACE) is concluded to have significant advantages over the batch process.

This paper presents a 20-year global account of tunneling in gassy ground demonstrating high probability of schedule delays, cost overruns, worker injuries and fatalities. Causes of these failures are systemic. Gas is seldom characterized in terms relevant to design of effective ventilation systems. Control measures deployed in tunnels are often based on outdated industrial safety codes. A change in approach is needed. This paper describes how to perform a desk study to determine if field investigation for gas is warranted, and lists the content of an effective characterization of gas in a geotechnical report.

The cementation kinetics of silver with aluminum particles were studied with model solutions under nitrogen atmosphere, varying the temperature, aluminum/silver ratio, pH and concentrations of thiourea and surface activator Recoveries were evaluated both by solution concentrations and by REDOX measurements. Tafel curves were determined for this system. The results showed the cementation process to be essentially independent of the pH and thiourea concentration. However, a strong influence was observed with respect to temperature, aluminum/silver ratio and the quantity of activator. There is evidence that the controlling step is the dissolution of aluminum oxide from the particle surface.

Rainbow colors of roofing granules, adorning the roofs of buildings from single family units to largest office buildings, have their origin in the roofing shingles as burlap soaked with tar appearing as early as the 1700s. Dusting of talc and mica on the coated surfaces, to keep roofing from sticking to itself in storage, represents an early improvement to the original construction product. Sometimes, colored, natural mineral dusts were added as color pigments within the dusting material, for initial color. Prolonged exposure to sun caused the asphalt to become brittle, and it eventually cracked and leaked. Search for solutions to cracking and subsequent leaking problems eventually led to the use of crushed mineral granules on asphalt coated shingles. This provided the impetus for further growth in the asphalt roofing industry. Application of a layer of crushed mineral on the asphalt coating minimized the coating deterioration from exposure to ultraviolet light, thus significantly improving the shingle life. In the 1900s, screened waste from slate quarries was the most commonly used granule in asphalt roofing products. Records indicate the use of coarse slate screenings for asphalt roofing as early as 1906. As the asphalt roofing industry further developed, other naturally colored minerals, such as silica sand, quartz, mica, feldspar, talc, slag, granite, rhyolite, and oyster shells were used on roofing surfaces. Later on, a number of manufactured granular materials, such as crushed brick and tile, fire clay, and white porcelain were used. The first artificially colored roofing granule was produced in 1914 by running molten slag into a solution of alkaline metal silicate, which was absorbed by the porous slag. Various colors were obtained by adding pigments to the silicate coating and by subsequently heat treating the granules. In 1922, another technique was developed in which green slate granules were saturated with copper sulfate solution and heated to 760°C to form copper oxide. Since then, many other granule coloring processes have been patented, one of the most significant being the sodium silicate coatings introduced around 1975. Granules as used in construction (specifically roofing materials) are defined as natural or synthetic-mineral grains smaller than gravel and larger than sand in particle size. They are used primarily for protective and decorative purposes on the weather- exposed surface of asphalt composition roofing. Development of artificial coloring techniques has made it possible for the roofing industry to provide asphalt roofing shingles in a wide variety of colors complementing the color and style of buildings. Roofing granules, as we see today, are the products of long technological evolution.

Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss and dilution. The mischaracterization of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of, blasting can lead to significant financial losses due to ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorized as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run-of-mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorized as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have led to the development of innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at the Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures.

Microorganisms, such as the bacteria Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, have been reported to depress pyrite flotation (Elzeky and Attia, 1987; Atkins, 1990). However, the depen¬dence of the depression on the type of organism or on suspension pH is still being determined. In this study, the relative effectiveness of various microorganisms (chemolithotrophic bacteria, chemoorganotrophic bacteria and yeast) over the pH range of 2 to 12 was studied. Screen¬ing tests using microflotation showed that every microorgan¬ism tested was capable of depressing naturally hydrophobic pyrite at acidic pH. Larger-scale experiments with both mineral pyrite and coal pyrite using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as depressants, showed that these microorganisms are very effective depressants for mineral pyrite at acid pH, but they are largely ineffective at neutral and alkaline pH, where the mineral pyrite surface is not naturally hydrophobic. The flotation response of the coal pyrite was completely different from the mineral pyrite. The coal pyrite was most floatable near neutral pH, with the floatability decreasing in acidic or alkaline solutions. De¬pression of the coal pyrite by yeast was not selective between the pyrite and the associated coal under the experimental conditions.

Today's increasing needs for rapid excavation have stimulated efforts to break rocks without explosives. The application of electric energy for this purpose has been studied by a number of investigators. Following principles have been used in electrical rock breaking: 1. induction heating5 2. high frequency heating4, 14 3. microwave heating6 4. contact resistance heating9,12 5. resistance heating11,13 6. electron beam heating1, 3 7. plasma jet heating2, 8 8. arc heating7 9. condensor discharge energy14 In this paper the presentation of the principles of electrical fragmentation is limited to a process called "electrofracing". This technique uses electrical heating of rock by electrode contact resistance9 and resistance heating" phenomena. The electrically induced stresses inside of rock generate forces which break up the material. The fracturing of ore takes place by tensile stresses instead of compressive forces. The electric energy merely creates fractures in the rock and the separation of fractured material takes place by subsequent mechanical handling. Energy requirements in secondary breaking of iron ores have been about one to two kilowatt-hours per ton of ore. Power requirement is a function of the degree of fragmentation.

Diatomite or diatomaceous earth is composed of innumerable microscopic opaline skeletons of single-celled aquatic plants called diatoms. The unique properties of this material enable it to be used as an important filtration medium and filler. The Circumpacific contains several economic deposits of diatomite. The largest of these is located in Lompoc, Ca. This deposit is the world's largest, purest, and most uniform marine deposit currently being mined. The other Circumpacific deposits are of fresh water origin. These deposits and Lompoc's unique marine deposit are significant sources of the world's diatomite supply.

Electrostatic separation is the selective sorting of solid species by means of utilizing forces acting on charged or polarized bodies in an electric field. Separation is effected by adjusting the electric and coacting forces, such as gravity or centrifugal force, and the time forces act on the particles, such that different species will have different trajectories at some predetermined time. Separations made in air are called electrostatic separation even though there is always some flow of current. Separations made using corona discharge devices are often called high tension separations. Separations made in liquids are termed separation by dielectrophesis if motion is due to polariza¬tion effects in nonuniform electric fields and termed electrophoresis if motion is due to free charge on species in an electric field. There are no industrial applications of mineral concentration by electropho¬resis or dielectrophesis; thus this section is limited to concentration in air. Typical Industrial Separations Typical applications of electrostatic separation are: 1) Beneficiation of ores, such as the concentration of the minerals ilmenite, rutile, zircon, apatite, asbestos, hematite, and many others. 2) Purification of foods, such as the removal of trash and rodent excrement from cereal seeds. 3) Sorting of reusable wastes, such as separating insulation from copper wire shreds. 4) Electrostatic sizing, namely, the sorting of solid particles ac¬cording to their size or shape. Table I is a partial list of industrial separations made by electrostat¬ics. The various types of electrostatic separators and the feasibility of commercial separations are most easily understood by reviewing pertinent basic electrostatic theory and the selected electrical proper¬ties of solids prior to describing the equipment and application. This is the sequence of presentation used in this section. Electrostatic Units One of the greatest sources of confusion and error is due to the multitude of units used in electrostatic literature. The system of units used throughout this section is the rationalized MKS, often called Systéme International (SI) units. In this system the mechanical units are the meter, kilogram, and the serond. The unit of force is the newton (N). This system is completed by the addition of the unit of charge, the coulomb (C). The fourth dimension, viz., the coulomb. could also be considered to be the ampere, since one ampere is the flow in a conductor of one coulomb per second. The Marysvale volcanic field of west-central Utah contains large areas of argillically altered rocks (fig. 1) that, in turn, enclose smaller areas of fine-grained, medium-grade, replacement alunite deposits and coarsely crystalline, high-grade vein-type alunite deposits. The largest replacement alunite deposits are [ ] located peripheral to a 23-m.y.-old monzonite stock called the Central Intrusive (fig. 1). The deposits formed in near-surface, highly oxidizing environments at the tops of hydrothermal plumes that were spaced irregularly around the stock. The deposits are horizontally zoned from alunitic cores through kaolinitic to propylitic envelopes. Vertically, characteristic alteration minerals progress from a pyrite-propylitic alteration assemblage at the base, upward through alunitic, jarositic, and hematitic assemblages to a flooded silica cap as shown on figure 2. The silica caps are cut by hydrothermal explosion breccias. d34Sso4 values of + 11.5 to + 15.4 permil indicate that sulfur in the hydrothermal plume was derived from underlying Mesozoic evaporites. The sharp upward transition from pyrite- propylite to alunite probably marks the paleowater table, and the top of the flooded silica cap represents the paleoground surface. Basin-Range extensional tectonism began shortly after alteration, and buried the replacement alunite deposits in basins beneath sediments eroded from uplands. The deposits were only recently exhumed.

Unlike traditional mining on land or ?dry? mining, relatively little is known of ?wet? or offshore mining within the industry. However, dredge mining has several benefits over dry mining, including high unit capacity, as well as lower operating and transport costs. IHC Merwede, a company with expertise in wet mining, is keen to raise awareness and help the industry move forward from dry to wet mining. The idea of mining offshore is not a new one. With global head grades declining, certain operations still have extensive resources of lower grade mineralization in their concession area. These operations require a lower cost, high volume solution for which dredge mining can provide an economic alternative. Interest in dredge mining has recently returned, and there is an increasing tendency to use dredge mining for the removal of overburden or the rehandling of tailing ponds.

Milling operations throughout the world have created vast amounts of waste by-products, or tailings, which are often disposed on the land surface. The wastes may be disposed behind dams, on untreated ground, or on compacted clay or synthetic liners of impoundments and trenches. Often one of the principle concerns of environmental regulatory agencies is whether seepage from the waste pile could move through the vadose zone to the water table and possibly contaminate an aquifer. The seepage may be generated by the drainage of liquids initially deposited along with the tailings or by infiltrating meteoric water which leaches solutes from the tailings. The purpose of this article is to discuss some of the commonly held assumptions regarding storage of seepage wastes in the unsaturated zone. The significance of recent studies of water movement in dry climates which pertain to tailings site selection will be presented. The paper is relevant not only to seepage from impoundments at mill sites, but to many other fluid waste impoundments as well in part this article reinforces earlier work by Stephens and Siegel (1980) and an excellent review paper by McWhorter (1985). The present report addresses considerations in porous media; for a discussion of the effects of fractures and anisotropy in the unsaturated-zone, refer to the paper by McWhorter (1985).

The present paper attempts to characterize the breakage properties of a brittle rock, quartz, at different size fractions when compressed at various loads in a confined piston die.  This is to understand the interaction between the various parameters affecting the breakage behavior of a brittle solid in a confined zone. Application of the results may lead to improving the energy efficiency in the size-reduction units, which use compression as the main stressing force.

Shotcrete is a versatile and widely utilized rock support material in mining and civil engineering projects due to its adaptability, strength, and efficient application. It immediately stabilizes rock surfaces, effectively controlling loose materials and preventing rockfalls in underground excavations. This paper focuses on assessing and analyzing data from observations of nozzlemen (shotcrete sprayers) during primary ground support activities in an underground mine. The study highlights the importance of nozzlemen’s skills in ensuring the quality of shotcrete application, which is critical for underground mining operations’ structural integrity and safety. A comprehensive training program and field support were implemented to enhance the nozzlemen’s proficiency. The training set covered theoretical knowledge and practical techniques to improve shotcrete application daily. Proficiency improvement was assessed using quantitative metrics, with rebound percentages decreasing by 5–14% as nozzleman competency increased. The results of this initiative showed significant improvements in shotcrete quality, including increased efficiency, reduced waste, and fewer reworks or rehabilitations. The findings aim to contribute to a broader understanding of best practices in shotcrete application and nozzlemen training, ultimately enhancing ground support application measures in the mining industry.

Placer material, regardless of the value of gold, tin, titanium, diamonds or other value mineral it contains, remains worthless until the valuable constituent is separated from the bulk of the material. This separation is no mean task when considering that a gold placer containing 0.01 to 0.03 oz/yd3 of gold, which is the range of grade of typical placer deposits; yes, 1:3,000,000! It is a miracle that gold placer mining has ever been profitable. Added to the situation of minute quantities of gold are several other problems, such as the gold often being very finely divided, the association of boulders and clay, and running and/or ground water. As each placer deposit is individual and distinctive, many factors have to be considered in planning the method for gold recovery from the alluvial deposit. Previous chapters have shown that in the exploration and sampling stage, some knowledge of the amount of each size of coarse and fine material which occurs in the deposit as well as the size distribution of the discrete gold particles is determined. Unless informed to the contrary, as a general rule of thumb, plant designers will consider that 40 percent of the material will pass through a 5/8-inch screen or punched plate hole. This was one of the main reasons that led the California Legislature to enact the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1975 (SMARA).
